Counting cost of storm BY SUE NEWMAN

When 120-plus millimetres of rain fell in the Ashburton District on Friday and Saturday it triggered what experts say could be a onein-50-year flooding event. The district was awash with flood water that saw many roads closed and countless properties inundated. Stormwater drains were filled beyond capacity and sandbags were in high demand.
This week as the waters recede, the Ashburton District Council is counting the cost of the recordbreaking rain event in a raft of roading repairs. It will take several days before all information on the event and the impact on infrastructure is known, but once reports are filed a full debrief on the event will be held, council roading manager Brian Fauth said. He’s warning motorists to be
mindful of washouts and pot holes. Early reports on the roading network indicated the district had escaped reasonably lightly, but there were quite a lot of edge breaks and a lot of culverts that would need to be cleaned out, he said. “When you consider the amount of rain we had, 120mm, double the record, I’d have thought there would still be a lot of water lying around.”
The debrief would provide an opportunity to look at what had worked well in terms of flood protection, what coped and what could have been better, Fauth said. “In Tinwald, for example, we might need to look at how we direct sheet flow away from that area, around Tinwald rather than through it.” Old irrigation races and stockwater races were invaluable when it came to dealing with a large

amount of surface water and the council might need to make sure these were not filled in, in the future, he said. Late yesterday a section of Thompsons Track remained closed and Waipuna Road on the south-east side of Drain Road intersection were still closed.
