Rental market in tenants’ favour

Ashburton’s rental market has turned on its head, with letting agents saying tenants are now spoiled for choice when it comes to finding somewhere to live.

And that change in the market is forcing landlords to come up with creative ways to let their properties, says Real Estate New Zealand Ashburton owner Trevor Hurley.

While his company has not adopted the ‘first week rent free’ promotion that has been used in Christchurch, it did try a no letting fee deal, he said.

“We did this for a two-week window, but believe it or not, we haven’t noticed

any increase in demand and we certainly expected this to happen.”

In recent weeks he said his rental stocks had gone from fully taken, with a tenant waiting list to around 5 per cent vacancy.

“Traditionally it’s a bit quieter in the winter, but in the past there was limited stock, now we have eight properties vacant out of 200 and that’s a lot for us.

Waiting lists? We don’t have them at the moment.”

With the kill season at Silver Fern Farms shorter this year, there were tenants who were under financial pressure, but his company was working with those tenants, offering them help with budget

advice if needed. There was also the option of putting tenants on part rent payments with top-up payments made when work resumed, he said.

“We’re trying to keep our tenants in their homes and that’s good for our landlords too because if the tenants move out then they’re not getting rent. We always keep owners advised and we seek their advice too. We’re trying to be socially responsible and proactive too.”

The tenant shortage had also had an impact on rental prices, with owners dropping these by up to $10 a week.

On-line agency TradeMe currently has 58 properties in the Ashburton District looking for tenants.

Benefit numbers on the rise

The number of people on a main benefit in Mid Canterbury has jumped from 1001 to 1134 in the three months to the end of June.

The rise is at odds to national figures, which acting social development minister Jo Goodhew says are falling.

The latest benefit figures for the district show 417 on jobseeker

support, 301 on sole parent support, 389 on supported living and 27 on other benefits.

The combined total of benefits is less than half a per cent of the total number of people in the country on benefits.

Mrs Goodhew said there were 5172 fewer people on benefits nationally at the end of June than at the end of June 2015.

This June period was also the first quarter since the $790 mil-

lion Child Hardship Package came into effect, raisin benefit rates by $25 a week after tax for those with dependent children and increasing obligations for sole parents.

In Mid Canterbury, the number of people on benefits traditionally jumps between the March and June quarters because of seasonal work.

But at 1134, it is easily the highest number of benefits since September 2013, when the figure

stood at 1076.

Broken down, the figures show 469 men and 665 women on benefits; 186 aged 18-24, 344 aged 2539 and 261 aged 55-64.

Just over 400 had been on a benefit for less than a year and 731 had been on a benefit for more than a year.

Mrs Goodhew said the number of people on a sole parent support nationally had fallen since June 2015.

She said sole parents had shown they are willing and able to move into independence, with a reduction of 965 in the last quarter, or 3818 in the last year.

“It’s also promising to see a 2.1 per cent reduction in the number of jobseekers with health conditions and disabilities in the last 12 months, as we find better ways to remove the barriers they face to employment,” she said.

Pokemon Go crossing boundaries in Ashburton

Ashburton Pokemon hunters joined forces in the Ashburton Domain on Saturday.

Event organiser Chris Poole said the event started at 1pm, but there were still people playing four hours later; at any given time about 50 people were on the hunt, catching, training or fighting Pokemon.

He said the Pokemon Go app had attracted players of all ages and crossed cultures and backgrounds.

Players in the Ashburton Domain on Saturday ranged from five to 65 years, most equipped with power packs to keep playing when their phone’s batteries drained to zero.

The game encourages people to walk in search of Pokemon, with players aiming to catch all 150 currently roaming the countryside.

Mr Poole said he has caught 102 – the rarest Chansey – and has walked down the Ashburton Riverbed and in other parts of the town. There were a few lurking in Halswell Quarry, Christchurch, too.

He plans on venturing further

afield to catch more too, though not as far as Tauranga man Caymen Beeby who is travelling around New Zealand in his quest to “catch ‘em all”.

Mr Beeby plans to film his experiences and will chart his progress on a blog, hosting meet-ups and events along the way to meet and socialise with other Pokemon Go players.

Mr Poole, who first played Pokemon on a Gameboy in 1998, said the app was a lot of fun and he was enjoying the new version.

“It is definitely an aim to catch as close to the 150 as I can before the next 100 are released in December.”

He said it was great to see so many players at the Ashburton Domain, talking about where to find Pokemon, Gyms and Pokestops.

He said players needed to act quickly if a rare Pokemon was seen in their locality.

“The app lets you know when they are within 100m of you, but the rare ones only spawn for five minutes at a time, so you have to be quick.”

‘Shocking’ health stats The annual tally of patients denied access to a hospital specialist has grown to around 45,000, a “shocking” figure which shows health is not receiving enough money from the Government, the Labour Party says.

Based on data from 19 of the 20 district health boards, the party says 44,780 patients referred to hospital were sent back to their GP without seeing the specialist they were referred to.

This was 7 per cent more that in 2014, the DHB responses under the Official Information Act indicated. The greatest increases were in Waitemata and Waikato.

Labour health spokeswoman Annette King said 44,780 patients being denied access “is a shocking figure and underlines how far the cut of $1.7 billion has hurt health”.

In fact, the Government has increased health funding annually since it took office in 2008, but King and other critics argue the increases have not kept up with increases in medical costs and population growth and ageing and are therefore a “cut”.

Getting to see a specialist, on referral from your GP, is the first step into the state-funded elective surgery system for treatment of conditions including cataracts blurring vision and disabling arthritis caused by worn out hip and knee joints. Hospitals screen referrals to see if patients are sick or disabled enough to meet the

DHBs’ clinical and financial cutoff points.

King said DHBs refusing to see patients meant people who should be productive members of their community were forced onto the “scrapheap”.

“They are being denied care because our hospitals are not being funded to meet demand.

“New figures show that 12 out of our 20 DHBs are getting less money out of the Budget once they have made the adjustment for inflation and population growth.

“The minister has to fund health properly. At the moment thousands of New Zealanders are being ignored when it comes to essential elective surgery.”

Health Minister Jonathan Coleman’s spokeswoman said yesterday he was not available. But she noted his earlier statement that the then-Labour Government in 2006 had estimated that around 25 per cent of all GP referrals to specialists were returned to GP care, which equated to about 65,000 patients a year at the time.

National Government data released in March found that in the three months to September 30 last year, 5335 patients - 4 per cent of referrals for a first specialist assessment - were declined because they did not meet the threshold.

This is expected to more than double, to 10 to 15 per cent, as the dataset grows and becomes more accurate.

Wind blows away ski plans

Mt Hutt skifield was hoping to open today after a weekend of wind. Up to 10cm of snow fell Saturday night, but strong winds put paid to skiers’ plans to take advantage of it.

Weather conditions looked good for opening today, with lighter south-west winds and snow showers clearing during the morning.

Tuesday’s forecast for the mountain is for fine and sunny weather.

Skiers and boarders and skifield staff were hanging out in Methven’s cafes yesterday, hop-

ing the wind would ease. Among them were Gonzalo Herrera and Malu Canales, from Chile, who had planned to spend their anniversary skiing on Mt Hutt.

While the weather didn’t play ball, they were happy to be in Methven and spent some of yesterday morning playing chess at Primo Café.

The MetService said wild weather across the country had seen severe gales, heavy rain, thunderstorms, snow and huge waves. It was due to a strong and moist northwesterly flow ahead of an active front, which was then followed by strong, showery westerlies.

Meteorologist Peter Little said strong westerlies would continue to affect parts of northern and central New Zealand through to this afternoon, and severe weather warnings and watches remain in place.

Temperatures were very warm for July across much of the country this weekend, especially in eastern areas. Mr Little said Napier reached 22 degrees Celsius on Saturday afternoon, while Christchurch was close behind on 21. However, colder southerlies developed over the lower South Island yesterday, with snow falling to low levels in parts of Southland and Otago.

Quizco to raise money for Mid Canterbury Children’s Day

Organisers of the annual Mid Canterbury Children’s Day are holding a quizco to raise funds for the event.

Organiser Lorayne Oakley said

the last quiz night was held nearly two years ago and its success was the inspiration for this year’s event.

“We are hoping for a really good turnout, there have been a lot of comments on our Facebook page

from people wanting to put teams together,” she said.

The fundraiser is to ensure the annul Mid Canterbury Children’s Day celebration remains free for those who attend.

“It’s just a fact, we are struggling

like a lot of the groups are.

“The celebration usually costs about $10,000 or $11,000 to run but this year it looks like it will cost $12,000 or $13,000,” Mrs Oakley said.

Along with the quiz, there will

also be an auction and spot prizes.

“We have prizes ranging from novelty items to hair care packages, there is something for everyone,” Mrs Oakley said.

The quiz night will be held at the Ashburton MSA on Friday, July 29.

New peer support scheme

Mount Hutt College students will begin the new term with a new support system.

Year 13 student Josiah Penno has instigated a peer support scheme for students from Year 7 to 13 and is among a team of trained young listeners that students can turn to for help.

He said common problems for students included bullying and stress around their schoolwork.

Josiah, who started at Mount Hutt College last year after being home-schooled, said the peer support scheme was supported by the school, its youth mentor and the organisation Collaborative Trust.

The trust has run two work-

shops for the new peer support team at Mount Hutt; six are Year 12 so will continue with the programme next year.

Josiah said the training involved helping the peer leaders become better listeners and able to respond to concerns about issues.

“Common things we are expecting are bullying and school-

work stress.”

The school has other support programmes, including a buddy system between Year 7-8s and Year 13s, but peer support was available to all students.

He hoped the programme would be welcomed and well used.

“And it will be my contribution to the school.”

In brief Wanted man found Ashburton police say they have located Christian Ioane. The 27-year-old was found and arrested in South Auckland, following information they received. Police said they wanted to thank members of the public who helped locate him.

Vegetation fire

Providing skills to unwind

Rakaia volunteer firefighters spent 30 minutes on Saturday putting out a vegetation fire at Chertsey. The call for assistance came through at 3.23pm. Methven firefighters had a 3.12am callout, but it was a false alarm. Rural fire chief Don Geddes said last week people lighting vegetation fires had to pay close attention to the weather forecast and make sure any embers could not be re-ignited by wind.

ACADS Mindfulness and Meditation programme aims to give people the skills to manage a busy life and starts next Thursday, July 28.

The programme, taught by Chris Levitt, starts again next week after positive feedback from previous classes.

Chris Clark, manager of Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drugs Service, said the programme gives people the means to de-stress.

She said with life being so busy people needed a way of slowing things down.

Meditation can help with relaxing and calming a busy head while improving concentration and focus.

She said it can reduce stress and anxiety and promote general mental health.

Over the course of the programme people are taught the skills needed to meditate and gain a peace of mind and techniques they can take away from the programme and use at home.

Ms Clark said the programme is open to anyone regardless of whether or not they are receiving alcohol or addiction services.

There are currently no spots in next week’s programme however, Ms Clark said they are taking names for a waiting list.

Police are reminding drivers that school returns today and people need to slow down and pay attention around schools. Children could be unpredictable and drivers need to take this into account when travelling in school zones.

Parents are also being reminded not to double park or stop on yellow lines when dropping off or picking up their children from school, and to use footpaths and pedestrian crossing where provided.

New seating increases capacity There’s a giant jigsaw puzzle sitting on the floor in the EA Networks Centre stadium; it comes with a $300,000 price tag and is capable of comfortably accommodating almost 1000 human pieces.

Unlike most jigsaws, this one comes with assembly details and when completed it will be

The puzzle will be assembled over the next two weeks and by August 5 it will be stored, ready to be hired and rolled out when required.

A thank you present for dad turned out to be more sentimental for Alan Paterson than he realised when the car he sold 13 years prior was sitting in front of him.

Alan Paterson bought his Toyota Celica XX back in 1992 and was its second owner. As his family grew, he realised it was time to let go of the car he loved and had rebuilt piece by piece.

Alan later helped his sons do up their cars and as a thank you, his son Aaron set off in search of the car his dad had loved so much.

As a six-cylinder, 2.8 litre car, the 1983 Toyota Celica XX (pronounced double X) is the most

powerful in the Toyota Celica range.

Alan’s car seems to be on the rarer side of the Celica range with one of the features of the car being an automated Japanese woman’s voice that will talk to you.

Aaron spent eight or nine years searching for the car his dad had spent 13 years doing up to look exactly like a 1985 new Celica Supra.

Alan once polished the car so well that some of the Toyota super deep red paint, he had put on the car in his journey to replicate the new Celica, came off and he had to repaint the whole car again.

Aaron was starting to give up

hope of finding his dad’s pride and joy until it appeared in an unlikely place.

“My two mates were sitting in my lounge at home browsing Facebook, then Kieran goes to me across the room ‘Hey Aaron, what was the number plate on your dad’s old car’?

“I quickly said RA1117 then he paused for a few seconds and looked and said, ‘here is your Dad’s car’,” he said.

Alan’s car had made an appearance on the Facebook car buy and sell group Dirty South Car Club, and Aaron made sure no one else had the chance to buy it.

“I said to the guy selling it, ‘don’t sell it to anyone, we are buying it right now I don’t care

how much it is we are buying it back’.”

The day the car was found also happened to be Alan’s birthday.

Aaron and some of his friends drove down to Mosgiel to pick up the car and bring it home.

The day after, Aaron’s family visited him in Christchurch.

As they were about to leave, Aaron told his dad to wait outside the garage and gave a speech, thanking him for everything he had done and wishing him a happy birthday.

Then he told Alan to turn around while he opened the garage door.

Aaron made the car talk in the automated Japanese voice, which made Alan realise it was a Toyota.

“I then got him to turn around and he was shocked and didn’t know what to say.

“The first thing he looked for was the number plate to make sure it was his one then ran his hand over it like Eleanor from Gone in 60 Seconds,” Aaron said.

Alan spent two years restoring the car to its original glory, including putting one final coat of Toyota super deep red paint on.

“I replaced the engine with a $250 Toyota one and now it runs better than my current car,” Alan said.

There are still a couple of small bits and pieces to do on the Celica, but Alan could not be happier to be reunited with his favourite car.

Supporting rescue helicopters Skiing with a friend on Mt Hutt last year, Canterbury man Jordan Hill skidded on invisible ice near the base of the triple chair and suffered serious internal bleeding.

He was airlifted off the mountain by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, who flew him to Christchurch Hospital for blood transfusions that saved his life.

Jordan is returning to the mountain this season and says the flying paramedics made that possible.

“I’ve been skiing for years and have never broken a bone,” he said.

“You never know when you will need help the most; the rescue helicopter saved my life.”

Mt Hutt is, in turn, helping the rescue service by asking staff, skiers, snowboarders and guests to make a donation at the till when making on-mountain purchases.

The ski area’s manager James McKenzie said the Christchurchbased rescue helicopter made the difference between life and death when accidents happened in remote areas like the mountains.

“Our operational and medical

team enjoy a close working relationship with the rescue crew, so we’re very happy to support the service.”

Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue CEO Christine Prince said on a busy weekend, the crew flew to the mountain regularly; the average cost of each mission was $8625.

“If we can get specialist care to a patient within 60 minutes their chance of making a full recovery increases by up to 80 per cent.

With only 30 per cent of a mission costs funded by the government, we rely on the community and initiatives like Mt Hutt’s fundraiser.”

She said every dollar made a difference, with crews operating 24/7 and recording 800 missions a year.

Ms Prince said most guests transported by air rescue are discharged from hospital on the same day, but with no x-ray facilities on the mountain it was best to err on the side of caution when it came to things like lumbar pain.

“It’s about safety and peace of mind for skiers.”

W

hen the fire siren sounds we take it for granted that within a few minutes, fully crewed fire engines will be rolling out of Ashburton Fire Station.

If the siren sounds in rural areas, the same thing happens.

Volunteer firefighters leave work, abandon sport or wake up and get out of bed. We take all of this for granted – we shouldn’t.

Those volunteers willingly give their time to do what is a physically and emotionally taxing job. They attend fires, accidents, rescues and medical emergencies. And that’s in addition to their day jobs.

In our district we’re fortunate.

While many volunteer brigades struggle for personnel, we don’t.

Yes, in the rural brigades, it’s sometimes difficult to find crews during the day when volunteers are working out of rural villages, but by and large we have a great culture around volunteerism.

Not so in many parts of New Zealand.

Stewart Island for example has just chalked up its 50th anniversary but it struggles on every front – volunteers and equipment.

The Government does spend money equipping brigades and training volunteers, but no matter how good the gear, if the crews can’t be found, there’s no service. And while there’s big change in the wind for the way in which fire services around the country are run, that is unlikely to change the people numbers in many parts of the country.

Ashburton is fortunate it has a strong volunteer fire service culture; for some it’s a family tradition. And geographically we’re fortunate; Christchurch services are less than an hour away - with a siren and flashing lights.

But we’re like the rest of New Zealand’s remoter spots when it comes to our rural villages, relying on the culture of everyone knowing and looking after everyone ensures the job is done.

About 80 per cent of New Zealand’s firefighters are volunteers and they number almost 12,000 between the NZ Fire Service and the National Rural Fire Authority.

It’s easy to take our fire service for granted. We rest easy knowing that in an emergency help is just a phone call away. These men and women lay their lives on the line every time the siren goes. They truly are our unsung heroes.

Literacy and numeracy skills remain essential S

ometimes I hear people of my generation and older fretting about whether Kiwis today have the basic competencies in reading, writing and maths that previous generations had.

A recent OECD report into adult literacy and numeracy, known as the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) has confirmed that we are doing well in this area, placing New Zealand fourth in the OECD for adult literacy. The survey of adult skills placed Japan first in adult literacy followed by Finland, the Netherlands, then New Zealand.

Meanwhile, we are also maintaining a good performance in our adult numeracy skills, which have remained steady and ahead of the OECD average since 2006.

New Zealand is ranked 13th in the OECD for numeracy skills, ahead of Australia, Canada, and Singapore.

We are also amongst the world leaders in problem solving using technology. This is a skill that has been tested for the first time

in the OECD survey. We rank a very impressive fifth for this important skill and have the highest proportion of adults with moderate to high problemsolving skills using computers.

These skills are increasingly called for in today’s working environments.

The survey results follow years of intensive focus by the Government on improving adult literacy and numeracy, particularly in the workplace.

Last year, the Government changed some criteria so more workers could access training, and last month we announced industry trainees will now also be able to access Workplace Literacy and Numeracy support.

We’re also seeing earlier identifi-

cation of problems with literacy and numeracy through use of the adult literacy and numeracy assessment tool.

The numbers of adults accessing help with their literacy and numeracy has quadrupled between 2010 and 2013 from 36,200 to 175,000.

In 2015 alone, the Government invested $248 million into tertiary courses with literacy and numeracy embedded within other subjects. Another $48.5 million is available for courses specifically for adult learners to improve their literacy and numeracy and/or learn English.

Literacy and numeracy received a further boost in Budget 2016 with $14.6 million provided over four years so that foundation education courses at Levels 1 and 2 on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework are completely free, as these courses always include literacy and numeracy.

Another $11 million is being provided for 600 more places for the Workplace Literacy and Numeracy Programme and

around 900 places more places from 2017 onwards, compared with 2015.

While Maori and Pasifika adult literacy and numeracy scores are lower than the New Zealand average, the gap is decreasing as a result of the Government’s efforts to improve achievement for these two priority groups. Maori and Pasifika literacy scores have been increasing at a faster rate than the rest of the adult population. Since 2006, literacy levels have risen 1 per cent for the total population, 2 per cent for Mãori, and 4 per cent for Pasifika. Since 2006, while numeracy scores have not risen for the total population, they have risen 2 per cent for both Maori and Pasifika.

These results are great news for our economy and our society.

We need a workforce that is equipped with the skills to adapt to the changing demands of the workplace and the ability to acquire and apply new knowledge.

Having a workforce with strong literacy and numeracy skills will help to continue to improve our economy’s productivity.

IS claims Kabul attack Twin explosions have torn through a demonstration by members of Afghanistan’s mainly Shi’ite Hazara minority in Kabul, killing at least 80 people and wounding more than 230 in a suicide attack claimed

by Islamic State.

Graphic television footage from the site of the attack showed many dead bodies lying on the bloodied road, close to where thousands of Hazara had been demonstrating over the route of a planned multimillion-dollar power line.

“Two fighters from Islamic State detonated explosive belts at a gathering of Shi’ites in the city of Kabul in Afghanistan,” said a brief statement on the group’s Amaq news agency.

If confirmed as the work of IS, the attack, among the most deadly since the US-led campaign to oust the Taliban in 2001, would represent a major escalation for a group hitherto largely confined to the eastern province of Nangarhar.

The explicit reference to the Hazara’s Shi’ite religious affiliation marks a departure for Afghanistan, where bloody sectarian rivalry between Sunni and Shi’ites typical of Iraq is relatively rare, despite decades of war.

Officials in Afghanistan’s main intelligence agency, the National Directorate for Security (NDS), said the attack was planned by an individual named Abu Ali, an IS militant.

They said three bombers were involved in the attack.

The Persian-speaking Hazara, estimated to make up about 9 per cent of the population, are Afghanistan’s third-largest minority but they have long suffered discrimination and thousands were killed during the period of Taliban rule.

The Taliban, a fierce enemy of IS, denied any involvement and saying on its website that the attack was “a plot to ignite civil war”.

The attack succeeded despite tight security which saw much of the city centre sealed off before the demonstration, with stacks of shipping containers and other obstacles and helicopters patrolling overhead.

An Interior Ministry statement said 80 people had been killed and 231 wounded, with local hospitals straining to cope.

The worst previous attack against the Hazara was in December 2011, when more than 55 people were killed in Kabul during the Shi’ite festival of Ashura.

That attack was claimed by a Pakistani Sunni extremist group called Lashkar-eJhangvi.

President Ashraf Ghani declared a national day of mourning and vowed revenge, while the top United Nations official in Afghanistan, Tadamichi Yamamoto, condemned the attack as a war crime.

The United States offered assistance to investigate the attack.

Gunman fixated on mass killings A German-Iranian teenager who shot dead nine people in Munich was a deranged lone gunman obsessed with mass killings who drew no inspiration from Islamist militancy, police say.

The 18-year-old, born and raised locally, opened fire near a busy shopping mall at the weekend, triggering a lockdown in the Bavarian state capital.

Seven of his victims were themselves teenagers, who police said he may have lured to their deaths via a hacked Facebook account on what was the fifth anniversary of twin attacks by Norwegian mass murderer Anders Breivik that killed 77 people.

The Munich shooting, in which a further 27 people were wounded, some seriously, was the third act of violence against civilians in Western Europe - and the second in southern Germany - in eight days.

Bavarian state crime office president Robert Heimberger said the gunman, who German media named as Ali David Sonboly, was carrying more than 300 bullets in his backpack and pistol when he was later found dead of a gunshot wound.

Following a police search of the attacker’s room, where a book on teenage shoot-

ing sprees was discovered, Munich police chief Hubertus Andrae all but ruled out an Islamist militant link in the attack.

“Documents on shooting sprees were found, so the perpetrator obviously researched this subject intensively.”

The gunman had spent time in psychiatric care, and there was no evidence to suggest he had had an accomplice, Andrae said.

Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said it was also too early to associate the Munich shootings with Breivik, who in 2011 shot dead 69 attendees at a youth summer camp hours after murdering eight others by detonating a van bomb in Oslo.

Robert Heimberger, president of the Bavarian state criminal agency, told the news conference police were investigating findings suggesting the Munich gunman invited people to a fast food restaurant at the mall via the Facebook account.

Turkey’s foreign minister said three Turkish citizens were among nine people killed in the Munich attack while Greece’s foreign ministry said one Greek was among the dead.

According to foreign media reports,

there were also three Kosovo Albanian victims.

Police commandos raided an apartment in the Munich neighbourhood of Maxvorstadt early on Saturday, where a neighbour told Reuters the gunman had lived with his parents for about four years.

In the killer’s room, police found a German translation of a book entitled Why Kids Kill - Inside the Minds of School Shooters.

Asked if the gunman had deliberately targeted young people, Munich police chief Andrae said that theory could be neither confirmed or ruled out.

Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann said there were several signs he had been suffering from “not insignificant psychological troubles”.

Three of his victims were 14 years old, two were 15, one was 17 and one 19. The others were 20 and 45, the police chief said.

Police will also have to find out how the 18-year-old obtained the firearm in a country whose gun control system is described by the US Library of Congress as being “among the most stringent in Europe”.

The original star of the Alien film franchise says she’s hopeful about reprising her role as tough-as-nails survivor Ellen Ripley in another sequel. Weaver told the Comic-Con crowd during a Saturday panel celebrating the 30th anniversary of the sci-fi sequel Aliens that District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp pitched her an idea for another instalment when they were working together on his 2015 film Chappie. “Four months later, I got a script that was so amazing and gives the fans everything they are looking for - plus innovates in a lot of ways,” Weaver said. The actress, who will soon begin production on filmmaker James Cameron’s Avatar sequels, isn’t sure when they would work on the project.

T

he skies were clouding over as I strode briskly across that famous bridge, the Ponte Vecchio, ready for a productive day checking off Florentine must-sees.

Slight problem: The first museum on my list was open, but the ticket office was closed.

OK, then, on to the Uffizi Gallery. Except this time both ticket office and museum were closed; I had forgotten it was Monday.

A fine rain began to fall as I wandered listlessly past the open arches of the building next door, the statue-studded Loggia dei Lanzi. This wasn’t going at all as planned.

And then it hit me. Wait. This was the Piazza della Signoria, where novelist E. M. Forster’s adorable Lucy Honeychurch witnessed a stabbing moments after complaining about the dullness of life in A Room With a View. And those had to be THE steps where the brooding George Emerson carried Lucy’s fainting form.

Sunshine filtered through. I had found Florence. Or rather, it had found me.

If you’re planning a trip here, you could do worse than wander until you find what you didn’t know you were looking for. Here are a few starting points.

The bridge is home to several jewellery and souvenir shops and is an instantly recognisable landmark of Florence. makeover and expansion. The Central Market (Piazza del Mercato Centrale on Via dell’Ariento) has a bright and bustling remodelled second floor, home to food stands, a restaurant, pizzeria, wine academy, cooking school and more. Open daily, 10am to midnight.

CLASSIC ATTRACTIONS If there is one must-see in Florence it’s Michelangelo’s David.

Yes, there are lines, crowds and a forest of smartphones waving in front of you, but all that falls away as you round the corner to the long gallery and confront 17 feet of cool, concentrated, confident youth. Galleria del’Accademia, Via Ricasoli 58/60. Open Tuesday-

Sunday, 8.15am to 6.50pm, about $14. The Uffizi Gallery, set in an imposing 16th-century building, is home to outstanding art, including Giotto’s altarpiece, the Ognissanti Madonna, which revolutionised painting by portraying the human figure in perspective, not just two dimensions. Piazzale degli Uffizi 6. Tuesday-Sunday, 8.15am to 6.50pm, around $10.

You can’t miss the Duomo, the Gothic cathedral encrusted in pink, green and white marble that is a striking feature of the city.

The inside is less impressive but is open most days 10am to 5pm and free.

The Ponte Vecchio isn’t the most beautiful bridge in the world, but it is interesting, with its line-up of stores, mostly jewelers and souvenir sellers. It was big news in May when a sinkhole opened up, swallowing a score of cars on a stretch of road between Ponte Vecchio and the bridge immediately east, Ponte Grazie. The mayor of Florence vows to have repairs completed by November.

on the south side of the Arno, for terrific views of the city. You can get here by taxi, the No.12 bus or by walking about 20 minutes from the Uffizi Gallery.

GETTING AROUND Florence is a walking city; bring comfy shoes.

If you have a car or hire a driver, consider emulating Miss Honeychurch and cousin Charlotte and head for the hills. You’re in the middle of Chianti wine country with several estates to visit, including Poggio Casciano, a 14thcentury villa that is part of the Ruffino wine company and about a 30-minute drive from the city.

If you’re planning on visiting museums, consider buying tickets online; book entrance times to skip long lines.

More into shopping than sculpture? Check out the Santa Maria Novella, an apothecary that traces its history back 600 years. Don’t miss the displays of antique remedies such as anti-hysteria pills as well as the beautifully packaged perfumes and other products available for modern consumers.

For a touch of local nightlife, the Piazza Santo Spirito on the south side of the Arno is lined with cafes and bars.

A hot spot for gelato is La Carraia, Piazza Nazario Sauro 25R. Work up a literary appetite and order something in honour of Miss Honeychurch, who “loved iced coffee and meringues”.

Stratfords dominate at Celtic

By Steve Devereux Auckland A-grader Craig Stratford returned to the club on Saturday night where his stellar career all began to claim the major honours in the Celtic Squash Club’s annual Ray McBeth Memorial tournament.

After disposing of Celtic’s Peter Bryant (who was in a national title-winning team with Stratford at Ashburton College some years ago) and defending champ Corey Hastie on the way, Stratford met Sam Shearer in the championship final.

B2 graded Shearer, from the Ashburton club, threw everything he could muster at Stratford, but the relentless defence which was so quickly turned into attack from Stratford eventually left the Ashburton player with nowhere to go, and the match was over in three sets, giving Stratford a title he last claimed two years ago.

The game of the tournament was actually the third and fourth playoff, between Celtic’s John McDonnell and Hastie.

Both ranked B2, they put on a superb show of top squash, shadowing each other around the court and producing some outstanding retrieving, boasting and cracking drives, in a long five-setter that kept the packed gallery absorbed for each and every shot.

McDonnell was eventually the victor in a stunning match that went right down to the wire.

In the ladies grade, Rebecca Abernethy from the host club put up a brave showing against Simone Stratford, who is currently graded B2 and headed for further glory under the coaching of father Craig, but the young Auckland star wasn’t giving anything away, and maintained her ruthless approach in each of the three games it took to wrap up the title.

Stratford also contested the men’s C grade, and took the special plate in a grade stocked with a strong field of C2 and D1 men.

Rakaia’s Ivan Brown and Celtic’s Pat Summerfield warm up for their D grade clash in the Celtic Squash Club’s annual tournament over the weekend. Brown emerged from the match a 3-1 winner, but went on to lose the plate final to Collegiate’s Devin Young.

Rakaia’s Matt Speedy took out the B grade from Ashburton’s Garry Mayne, who had set the grade wide open by knocking out top seed Braden Kenny in the first round.

Mayne brought his best game to the final, but it wasn’t enough to topple Speedy, who hits the ball as hard as anyone around.

Kenny went on to take the plate from Celtic’s Billy Nolan, while

Dean Harrison beat Stephen Brown to take the special plate.

Mitch Sim from Methven was too good for Ashburton’s Nick Swift in the C grade final, while Celtic’s Ed Harrison and Adam Clement fought a titanic battle in the D grade final, with Clement finally taking the honours.

Celtic veteran Ian Dolden surprised a few onlookers just by making it through to the E grade

final, where he met 16-year-old Jarod Hopwood from Ashburton.

Dolden pushed the youngster more than 50 years his junior to the limit in what was an exciting five-setter, but eventually succumbed to the superior firepower of his rival.

Liam Schikker from the Mayfield club only dropped one game on his way to the final in the F

grade, and Campbell Bedward could do nothing to stop his advance.

Schikker proved his dominance was no fluke and took the match in straight sets.

The tournament was deemed a great success, and an excellent precursor to the Mid Canterbury Squash Championships, to be held at the Collegiate courts on August 5-6.

Happy Highlanders

By Patrick Mckendry As soon as the Highlanders knew they were travelling from Sydney to Johannesburg for their semifinal, rather than the comforts of home in Dunedin, the social media posts started.

First-five Lima Sopoaga posted on Twitter: “Africa it is”, with associated smiley emoji.

Halfback Aaron Smith, who was to sit next to him on the long-haul flight, posted: “Off to SA, yeah boy.”

Despite the rigours of their travels lately in moving from Port Elizabeth to Buenos Aires to Dunedin to Canberra, Sydney and now Johannesburg in the space of four weeks, the defending champions are genuinely happy to still be together and in the competition.

Their motto is “another Monday”, in reference to another training week, and if that involves more time in planes and hotels then so be it.

“We are a really tight team,” coach Jamie Joseph said after his team’s nailbiting 15-9 quarterfinal victory over the Brumbies in Canberra.

“When we travel the boys have a lot of fun.

“There is a real balance in between doing the business at training and enjoying each other.

“I know a lot of teams will say that but it is a definitely with us so the travel is not too much to endure.”

A victory for the Crusaders would have seen Todd Blackadder’s men travelling from Johan-

nesburg to Dunedin for a semifinal.

Instead, they are out of the competition and it is the Highlanders having to cross the In-

dian Ocean for another crunch match.

Clearly the changing time zones, jetlag and move to high altitude is a less than ideal preparation for such a big game but if any team can maintain their performances it is this Highlanders outfit.

With the Smiths, Aaron and Ben, plus Sopoaga, pulling the tactical strings, finishing power in Patrick Osborne and Waisake Naholo and an under-rated pack as good as any in the competition, the Highlanders have every reason to feel they can repeat last year’s success.

They will need to do it the hard way, which means travelling back to New Zealand to play either the Hurricanes or Chiefs should they beat the Lions next Sunday morning NZ time, but their esprit de corps is such that they truly don’t know when they are beaten.

Few teams respond to on-field setbacks like the Highlanders – they fought back to beat the Chiefs in Dunedin in one of the best matches in Super Rugby history last weekend before clawing their way back in Canberra against the Brumbies, a match in which they produced an incredible defensive effort, and their crazy attacking lines, and offloading ability, will test the Lions more than the flat Crusaders could.

The Highlanders are alive, and the three other teams still in the competition should be worried.

All-NZ semi-finals fail to materialise By kris shannon The dream of a pair of all-Kiwi semi-finals has been denied but there still appears a good chance a New Zealand side will eventually claim the Super Rugby title.

After the Crusaders and Chiefs experienced mixed fortunes in South Africa, the semifinals have been set for the debut season of the expanded competition.

The top-qualifying Hurricanes will next weekend host the Chiefs in Wellington, while the defending champion Highlanders will travel to Johannesburg for an encounter with the Lions.

Kiwi fans had hoped this country’s dominance would set up a

couple of semi-final clashes on these shores, but the Crusaders were denied a spot in the final four by an impressive Lions outfit.

Todd Blackadder’s reign as Crusaders coach came to a disappointing end with a 42-25 defeat, finding the task too difficult after last week’s loss to the Hurricanes sent them on the road.

The Chiefs, on the other hand, had no such problems in Cape Town, demolishing the Stormers 60-21 in an outstanding attacking effort.

Dave Rennie’s team must now travel to the capital and face a Hurricanes outfit in irrepressible form, following their win over

the Crusaders with an equally comprehensive 41-0 shutout of the Sharks on Saturday night.

Chasing their first Super Rugby title, the Hurricanes will have to overturn the 28-27 defeat they suffered against the Chiefs at the Cake Tin in April, a memorable game that sets the stage for a mouthwatering knockout match.

If the Hurricanes can claim victory, the final will be in Wellington. If the Chiefs emerge triumphant, they will be playing away in the competition showpiece. And the team standing in the opposite corner will be determined on Sunday morning at Ellis Park.

The Highlanders dispatched the Lions 34-15 in March, but that result came with the benefit of home advantage. This time they will be continuing an arduous travel schedule.

Jamie Joseph’s men have in recent weeks gone from South Africa to Argentina to New Zealand to Australia, where they beat the Brumbies 15-9 on Friday night.

But heading back to the Republic, they will be determined to defend their title and potentially setting up a replay of last year’s decider against the Hurricanes.

It all makes for a highly-anticipated weekend of rugby, one that could very easily culminate with an all-Kiwi final.

Senior B finalists Southern and Mt Somers are set to clash in the 2016 Senior B final after winning their respective semi-final fixtures in thrilling fashion. Southern saw off a plucky Collegiate 43-38 to keep their aspirations of another Senior B title alive. Meanwhile, Mt Somers pulled off the unlikeliest of comebacks to book themselves a final berth. Hayden Reveley’s men trailed 29-5 at half time and conceded another try early on in the second stanza. But a relentless fight back and a converted try at the death saw the home side sneak a 38-34 victory. Southern and Mt Somers will meet in the Watters Cup final curtain-raiser on Saturday.

1st XV brave in defeat Ashburton College’s 1st XV produced a valiant performance on their return to the UC Championship after a two week break. Dave McCrea’s side fell to a narrow 19-14 loss to Lincoln High School in Christchurch, and the tough fixtures aren’t letting up.

College will face a major test when they meet top of the ladder Christ’s College in their next outing.

Captains in doubt The stakes could hardly be higher but both the Hurricanes and the Chiefs might be missing their inspirational skippers for Saturday night’s semi-final. The two Kiwi sides’ victories came at a potential cost for both teams, with Dane Coles and Sam Cane facing a nervous few days to find out whether they will lead out their respective sides at Westpac Stadium. The damage to Coles’ rib cartilage seemed severe while Cane would have to pass concussion protocols to take his place, possibly denying an epic semi-final two of its titans. - NZME

Armed guards for AB Security for the All Blacks in Paris on their end-of-year tour will be stepped up in the wake of the ongoing terror attacks in France.

Steve Hansen’s world champions will take four games on the road in November, facing Ireland in Chicago and Dublin, Italy in Rome and France in Paris. With recent high-profile terror attacks in Paris and Nice, terror experts expect French agencies to provide an armed motorcade for the All Blacks for the November 27 clash. - NZME

Aussies not so Super Australia’s leading Super Rugby teams face the challenge of having to cover significant player losses, after their nation missed out on a semi-finalist for the first time in four years. The country’s sole quarter-finalist, the Brumbies, lost 15-9 at home to the Highlanders.

In Australia, the attention will turn to the Rugby Championship after a fruitless Super Rugby campaign, with no immediate prospect of a grand resurgence next year. - NZME

Rakaia marches into cup final

The Watters Cup has called the Rakaia trophy cabinet home for the last three seasons, and it won’t be on the move just yet after the defending champions secured a place in the 2016 final on Saturday.

Rakaia swept Celtic aside in emphatic style for a 48-12 victory, and there were some concerned glares from the watching Southern faithful when, in the dying moments, Lepani Setavia charged over unchallenged to wrap up the one-sided victory.

Celtic’s message prior to Saturday’s semi-final clash was clear: a strong start is imperative.

But with 10 minutes played, the opening exchanges bore stark resemblance to when the two sides last met in April.

Celtic failed to contain hard running wing Seta Korotimana, who touched down in the corner following a period of sustained pressure.

Andrew Letham was unable to add the extras in tough conditions for the kickers, but it would matter little in the grand scheme of things.

Celtic returned fire through an unconverted try from young centre Christian Vainerere 20 minutes in, but the visitors quickly replied as Korotimana added his and Rakaia’s second try of the encounter.

Rakaia continued to dominate proceedings, but Celtic’s defence stood firm for the remainder of the first half for a 12-6 score at the interval.

If the first half was a testament to Celtic’s ability to stay in contention against the run of play, the second showed Rakaia’s capability of quickly putting the game out of reach.

Second five Timoni Nabakeke crossed over early on and Letham was on target from the tee for the first time as Rakaia boosted their lead to 20-12.

Late arrival Maleli Sau then showed his class after being introduced at half time.

the Celtic rugby grounds from Christchurch airport after returning from Fiji, and proved a devastating addition Rakaia’s back line.

Sau danced through the Celtic defence and crossed over for his first of two quick-fire tries 17 minutes into the second half.

Letham accounted for the wind and converted Sau’s second try to put Rakaia into an unassailable 34-6 lead with 12 minutes remaining, but the scoring didn’t end there.

brother Andrew duly collected the extras.

Celtic did manage a consolation try through wing David Morrison, but fullback Nathan McCloy’s conversion exemplified the home side’s day as the ball rattled the post and fell wide.

Rakaia rounded the encounter off in style in the dying moments as Setavia rubbed salt into Celtic’s wounds, running 40 metres down the left touchline to add his side’s sixth try of the afternoon.

Following Celtic’s Watters Cup departure, coach Shane Enright conceded that the better team took the spoils, and credited

Lions maul Crusaders Todd Blackadder’s dream of leading the Crusaders to a title he won so often as a player is over, the Lions clear-cut winners of their quarter-final in Johannesburg yesterday morning.

This was a particularly disappointing way to finish for Blackadder, who will now leave the franchise, along with his assistants Tabai Matson and Dave Hewett.

Previously only vulnerable to New Zealand sides this season, this match was a bridge too far for a team sent on the road by their calamitous 35-10 defeat to the Hurricanes in Christchurch last weekend.

As so often is the case at Ellis Park, the match wasn’t without controversy, with referee Craig Joubert, who cost Blackadder’s men the title in the final in 2014, particularly harsh on the Crusaders, sinbinning Luke Romano after only five minutes, and

South African TMO Marius Jonker awarding the home side their second try despite the evidence of a knock-on.

The margin of defeat blew out as the Crusaders were forced to chase the game due to their atrocious opening quarter.

In the end, it was clear cut – the Lions clearly the fresher team after virtually their entire starting line-up stayed home rather than play in the defeat to the Jaguares in Buenos Aires, and the Crusaders beaten down from the start.

The Crusaders shouldn’t feel ashamed to have fallen at this hurdle given the loss of experienced players Richie McCaw, Dan Carter and Colin Slade after last season, but, after topping the New Zealand conference at the June break, the fall down the table and out of the competition will leave a bitter taste.

“They played very well and were the better side,” he said.

“The bounce of the ball went against us at times but they just took us apart, we were blown out of the water.”

Rakaia will now turn their attention to next Saturday’s final where they will lock horns with Southern.

The Watters Cup holders will be in for a testing afternoon at the Ashburton Showgrounds, having lost twice to Michael Ellis’ men already this season.

“I think they lacked a few key players, but we fronted up and wanted it more than them I think – the score could have been a lot more,” said Rakaia assistant coach Wayne Foxcroft.

“It was a good polished performance for next week’s final, but we’ll go back to the drawing board now.

“We were only a converted try behind them last time.”

Draw damages cup hopes

Mid Canterbury United’s trophy hopes now rest on the cup competition after narrowly missing out on the league title a fortnight ago.

But Martin Fitzgerald’s side could only muster a 1-1 draw against FC Twenty Bombers at the Ashburton Domain on Saturday.

Holding midfielder Eddie Kettle put Mid Canterbury ahead in

the first half thanks to a deflection, but the Bombers levelled proceedings in the second stanza.

Despite dropping points, Mid Canterbury will still fancy their chances of progressing from pool

B to the knockout stages after thumping the Universities Aardvarks side by a whopping 7-0 a week ago.

United will take on FC Twenty Falcons in their final pool match next Saturday.

Masters on the wrong end in a thriller

Mid Canterbury United Masters’ title hopes took a crushing blow in a 2-1 loss to fellow championship contenders Western AFC at the Ashburton Domain on Saturday.

The top-of-the-table clash had the makings of a thriller and certainly didn’t disappoint in an end-to-end battle.

Just one point separated the two sides on the Robbies division two ladder heading into Saturday’s tie, but Western were quick out of the traps.

The visitors led 2-0 at half time thanks to goals from Dave Mawhinney and Tony Gumley.

Paul Bradford found the net in the second half for the home side, but Western held on for the three points.

Mid Canterbury’s fate is now out of their hands with just two games remaining, but there is still hope provided other results go their way.

Western are currently four points clear at the top, but defeats in their next two outings to Coastal Spirit would leave the door open for Mid Canterbury, who must collect maximum points in their two ties against Ferrymead due to a much inferior Mid Canterbury’s Paul Bradford struck his side’s only goal in Saturday’s top-of-the-table goal difference. match.

After six years in the NRL finals wilderness, Gold Coast coach Neil Henry is challenging the Titans to seize the opportunity and grab a top eight berth. The Titans host Parramatta on Saturday in the first of three straight home fixtures.

Lowndes beats Whincup Holden veteran Craig Lowndes has revived his Supercars championship tilt with victory in yesterday’s race at Queensland Raceway. The Team Vortex driver stole the lead off the line in the 200km race at Ipswich from pole-sitter Jamie Whincup and was never headed in a dominant drive. It was a tough day for Shane Van Gisbergen.

Saturday’s race winner Van Gisbergen gambled on a safety car but Scott Pye rejoined the race, leaving the Red Bull Racing star stuck in the middle of the pack and he came home 12th.

Another loss for Holm Valentina Shevchenko stunned Holly Holm at UFC Chicago, unanimously outpointing the former UFC champion. Fighting for the first fight since losing the belt to Miesha Tate at UFC 196, Holm lost on the judges scorecard 49-46. Her stunning knockout of then-champ Ronda Rousey in Australia at UFC 193 catapulted Holm (10-2) into the spotlight of mixed martial arts, but she followed with the back-to-back losses.

Walsh on podium Shot putter Tom Walsh led the Kiwi performances with a second place at the IAAF London Diamond League meeting while pole vaulter Eliza McCartney also got on the podium and on the track Angie Petty ran a solid 800m race.

Walsh’s best came in the second round of the stacked shot put competition, throwing 21.54, the fourth longest throw of his career.

Eliza McCartney, after early jitters, cleared 4.62 for third place in a very competitive women’s pole vault field.

Memories of Sunline revived Memories of arguably New Zealand’s greatest galloper in Sunline were revived over the past seven days through the deeds of her extended family across the country.

Promising two-year-old Sheralee opened her winning account at Oamaru last Sunday when she scored on debut from the Mandy and Matt Brown stable.

The filly is just the second of her sire Sun Ruler’s progeny to hit the racetrack and credited him with his first victory.

Sun Ruler, Sunline’s second foal, was a $2 million purchase from the 2007 Karaka Yearling sale with the son of Zabeel retired to stand at stud after two wins during a limited career on the track.

Raced on lease by her breeder and Sunline’s mentor Trevor McKee, Sheralee looks a filly of real promise that could well make a name for her sire in the immediate future.

“She is one we bred and brought along at home,” explained McKee. “She had shown us plenty of promise but I thought she might get more opportunities down south so I spoke with Matt and Mandy about taking her on.

“It was a great thrill to see her win and hopefully there might be a few more in store which will all help with getting a few more mares for Sun Ruler.

“There have been quite a few enquiries after the win so that’s certainly been a good thing.”

It got even better for McKee on Saturday when progressive three-year-old Magic Of The Sun scored his second win from just

All Roads doubles up Exciting galloper All Roads rounded off another superb day for the Donna Logan & Chris Gibbs stable when he made it two wins from two starts from his new home base at Ruakaka on Saturday. The rising five-year-old had done his early racing from part-owner Tony Cole’s Te Kauwhata operation where he managed a win and a placing from eight starts before being transferred to the Logan/ Gibbs barn after an impressive trial performance back in May. - NZME

Rider Rosie Myers kept up a solid clip in front and The mare simply kept running as she ground her rivals into the mud.

The Per Incanto gelding is out of Sunstrike who was Sunline’s first foal and is raced by McKee and son Stephen, who also bred him.

“He is a nice galloper who we think could put a few more on the board after that performance,” he said.

“He finished second to a good one in All Roads last time and he went on and won again on Saturday so the form stacks up pretty well.”

McKee will take plenty of interest in this Friday’s Winter Mixed Bloodstock Sale at Karaka where a number of his current broodmare band are now on offer, with the majority in foal to Sun Ruler.

“We are just looking to freshen up the mares we are breeding from so we decided to put a few in the sale,” he said.

“We’re hoping with what has happened over the last week or so it will help create more interest in them.”

Sunline raced 45 times for

32 wins, eight seconds and two thirds and an Australasian record $11 million in stakes.

She raced in four countries and won in three; she twice won the Southern Hemisphere’s weightfor-age championship, the Cox Plate along with two Doncaster Handicaps.

Sunline was twice elected Australian Racehorse of the Year and four times New Zealand Horse of the Year and was inducted into both the New Zealand and Australian Racing Halls of Fame.

Indians on top An impressive India bowling attack had West Indies on the ropes on the third day of the first Test in Antigua.

Fast bowlers Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami took four wickets each as the visitors bowled out West Indies for 243 in their first innings yesterday.

After Indian captain Virat Kohli enforced the follow-on, the hosts were then 1-21 at stumps, trailing by 302 runs, and with two days left perhaps only rain can save them.

Shami and Yadav led a strong fivepronged attack at the Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound.

Yadav (4-41) and Shami (4-66) found surprising life in the pitch in the first innings while Wriddhiman Saha behind the stumps featured in six dismissals (five caught and one stumped), equalling the record by an Indian wicketkeeper.

India were aided in their quest by batting that retired West Indies great Richards, in the commentary box, described as “very, very ordinary”.

Opener Kraigg Brathwaite top-scored for the home side with a disciplined 74 off 218 balls in nearly five patient hours at the

crease. Shane Dowrich also hit a lively 57 not out and put on 69 for the eighth wicket with captain Jason Holder (36).

Marlon Samuels and Carlos Brathwaite, heroes of April’s World Twenty20 title triumph, went cheaply.

Samuels was caught behind for one while Brathwaite made an embarrassing golden duck when he did not play at a Yadav delivery and watched in dismay as his off stump was knocked over.

“India really bowled well today,” Kraigg Brathwaite said.

“With three (fast bowlers) and spinners they had a lot to choose from.

“It was never easy because they really stuck to their plans.

“It was a tough day of test cricket.”

India relentlessly pressed home their advantage late in the day as West Indies faced 13 overs in their second innings.

Kraigg Brathwaite could not emulate his first-innings knock, trapped lbw for two by paceman Ishant Sharma.

Darren Bravo (10) and Rajindra Chandrika (9) then survived until stumps.

Wallabies grab Byrne Former All Blacks skills coach Mick Byrne has been snapped up by the Wallabies just months after leaving New Zealand, in what’s been hailed a coup for the Australian Rugby Union.

Byrne helped the All Blacks to back-to-back Rugby World Cup wins before announcing he was moving back to his homeland of Australia.

He’s taken on a role as ARU skills coach, and will begin training with the Wallabies this coming week.

Byrne said it was an “exciting challenge” to work alongside Australian coach Michael Cheika.

Sam Letham and Logan Currie were the quickest over the long and short courses respectively on race day three of the Ashburton Duathlon Series at the

Ashburton Showgrounds yesterday.

Letham recorded a time of 59.22 seconds followed by Jeannie Blakemore and Lee Farrell (59.23) and Andrew Taylor and Simon Earl (1.00.50) to round

out the long course’s top three.

Meanwhile Currie’s fine form continued to claim short course honours in a time of 32.46 seconds. Currie was followed by Natasha Waddell and Isabella Roulston (34.41) and Jaxson Whyte

(35.34) in second and third.

Race co-ordinator Carol Moore said the participants weren’t deterred by the rain overnight, and raced well in blustery conditions.

Race four will conclude this year’s series on August 21.

Firebirds weather storm

BY DANA JOHANNSEN For a remarkable 45 minutes of netball, the Southern Steel were on track to pull off the biggest finals upset in the history of the ANZ Championship.

Leading the defending champion Queensland Firebirds 4947 heading into the final quarter of yesterday’s semi-final clash in Brisbane, Kiwi fans dared to believe we could finally see a trans-Tasman league grand final played on New Zealand soil.

All it took was a couple of

small lapses early in the fourth quarter for the clinical Firebirds side, who are chasing a slice of history of their own by becoming the first side to win back-toback titles, to extinguish those hopes.

The Firebirds produced a 2015 final quarter surge to claim a 67-64 win and a fourth straight grand final final appearance.

Few expected the Steel would ever get that close.

While the Steel’s 66-51 win over the Firebirds in their round 11 match-up suggested they had a good chance of toppling the Australian conference champions once again, in reality few considered the visitors a chance.

Two stepping calls on FowlerReid put the Firebirds out to a handy four-goal advantage, and from there the visitors crumbled.

A couple of pushed passes saw the Firebirds extend their lead out to seven goals.

The Firebirds will take on the winner of tonight’s semi-final clash between the Magic and NSW Swifts in next weekend’s grand final.

Robbie Farah says he’ll dig his heels in and play out his contract with Wests Tigers despite his broken relationship with coach Jason Taylor.

The feud between the pair continues to worsen with Farah insisting he’s being forced out of the club and questioning Taylor’s approach to coaching. Farah led the Tigers NSW Cup side to a 42-24 win over Newtown on Saturday at Leichhardt Oval, three days after being dumped for Sunday’s round 20 NRL clash against St George at ANZ Stadium.

Froome eyes Rio glory With a third Tour de France title virtually secured, Chris Froome is already setting his sights on more glory on the French roads via Rio. Froome, who won the race in 2013 and 2015, is poised to be crowned Tour champion again after the largely processional ride from Chantilly to the Champs Elysees in Paris before taking part in the Olympics and maybe the Tour of Spain in August.

Before training again with the 2017 Tour in mind, Froome will take part in the Rio Games where he will be among the favourites for the road race and the time trial.
