Price on board Not a day goes by when rugby league legend Steve Price does not think about his former team-mate Sonny Fai. Fai, one of the NZ Warriors’ most promising players, drowned at Auckland’s Bethells Beach in 2009 after trying to rescue his brother caught in a rip. Price was captain of the Warriors at the time. Now based in Waipu, Price has come out in support of the Northern Advocate’s Give A Little – Save A Life campaign. The campaign, led by the Advocate and Whangarei Lions, aims to raise $25,000 for a jet-ski patrol for Bream Bay. It launched after two drownings in Bream Bay this summer. “When Sonny went missing and drowned it became really big for all of us,” Price said. Price, who made 91 appearances for the Warriors, owns Waipu Four Square and was one of the first to get on board, donating $500.

Crikey, it’s Bindi’s 17th birthday As daughter of Australia’s late crocodile hunter, it’s fitting Bindi Irwin will begin her 17th birthday party by feeding some of the deadly reptiles. The wildlife warrior’s major milestone was marked with a huge day of Hawaiianthemed celebrations at the family’s Australia Zoo yesterday. Bindi fed the crocs with mum Terri and brother Robert, before a series of island adventure activities including Hula dancing workshops, surfing and beach volleyball. The conservationist is now old enough to drive a car and, as many noted during the week, is old enough to have a boyfriend. “There is someone special in my life right now, and I’m really happy with that,” Bindi said. “Life is wonderful at the moment.” Bindi was just eight years old when her dad Steve, “The Crocodile Hunter”, was killed by a stingray in 2006.
A mine worker took a fortnight to recover after he was repeatedly stung by a swarm of bees while working on an environmental rehabilitation assignment in Western Australia. According to a report filed by the Department of Mines and Petroleum, the worker was acting as a spotter while others moved a pontoon that had stood idle for six years. As it moved, bees swarmed from the pontoon and stung the man almost 90 times.
Stars have been remembering comedian Robin Williams to celebrate what would have been his 64th birthday. The comedian died in August last year and would have celebrated his 64th birthday on July 21. Costars, fellow comedians along with hundreds of fans have remembered Williams. His Crazy Ones co-star Sarah Michelle Gellar wished Williams a happy birthday via her Instagram account posting a photo of them together with the quote “smile, though your heart is aching smile, even though it’s breaking”. Monty Python’s Eric Idle tweeted “Robin Williams’ birthday goddammit. Oh the good times we had. Miss him beyond belief.” Stand-up comedian Jack Carroll wrote: “Robin Williams is no longer here. That is a massive, massive shame. One of the funniest and most hyper creative beings ever. Happy Birthday!”

Bug in pork bun A customer at Brisbane’s Night Noodle Markets nearly had added crunch in his pork dumplings. Cockroaches were reportedly found in a food container at the South Bank event on Thursday night and Brisbane council officers are investigating the claim. It’s understood the man had already chowed down on one bun when he noticed the additional serving of protein. “We definitely have officers out there investigating the vendor that served the pork buns,” councillor Krista Adams told ABC Radio. “We take it very seriously when we get these reports.” An ABC producer shared pictures of the box of dumplings reportedly purchased from the vendor. In them, the typically indestructible bugs can be seen squashed up against the sides of the pork buns.

Car fails to provide any clues By Daisy HuDson

Investigators examining the car at the centre of four tragic deaths in Tinwald have come up empty-handed. Police believe a Holden Commodore left running in a garage to keep the battery “ticking over” was the source of the accidental carbon monoxide poisoning of Cindy George and her three children, who were
discovered at a Thomson Street property on July 2. The car’s Central Processing Unit (CPU) was forwarded to an electronic crime lab in Dunedin to determine if it could help establish a more accurate timeline of events as the exact time of the family’s death is still unknown. Police originally hoped the CPU would be able to determine when the car was turned on and
how long it was running for. However Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Worner confirmed yesterday that police technicians have been unable to extract any information from it. “Basically what’s happened is when the car battery went flat it has lost all the data that was on the CPU,” he said. With the car unable to provide any clues, the investigation has turned to cellphone data.
“Phone data is obviously important to us, and that’s still an ongoing process at the moment,” he said. “Obviously phones do quite a lot now these days, it’s not just phone calls, it’s text messaging, web searches, Facebook, all those sorts of things.” The last time Ms George and her children were seen alive was on the Saturday afternoon before their discovery, according to police.
Hundreds of people gathered to farewell Ms George and her children Pio, 5, Teuruaa, 3, and Teiyzshwaun, 2, at a service in Ashburton two weeks ago. Ms George was described by family and friends as a loving and devoted mother, while her children were considered “bubbly” and “full of life”. Police investigations are ongoing and their deaths have been referred to the coroner.

Business is booming at Ashburton EA Networks Centre. In the first nine weeks it was open the swimming pool complex had more than 30,500 users logged by the electronic access gate but because the counter was out of action for several days, the actual number of swimmers was much higher. On six days of this month, the number of pool visitors exceeded 1000 a day. Learn to swim enrolments are also climbing and have hit 800, up from 640 at the same time last year. And no one’s happier with the month-on-month success of the centre than sports facilities manager Steve Prescott. The centre’s huge popularity, however, has created the odd problem in terms of over popularity of the gym and gym classes and the swimming pool areas, particularly the hydrotherapy pool. Total gym membership has now passed 1000 and extra

classes have been added to cope with demand. At times it’s difficult to find mat or equipment space. “And that goes to show that a lot of people didn’t go to the gym before but now they are. I don’t believe we’re drawing cli-
ents from other gyms either,” Mr Prescott said. At times the hydrotherapy (warm water) pool was under extreme pressure and that inevitably led to the occasional clash of interests between older people wanting to undertake an ex-
ercise programme while younger people wanted to play, he said. “We’ve had the odd complaint but it’s important the complex is accessible to everyone. It must all be utilised.” Initially the hydrotherapy pool was restricted to people over the
age of 16 but that proved very unpopular with families. Now to try and keep competing interests apart, a lane rope has been placed in the pool and notices put up making it clear that there is a clear division between water activities, Mr Prescott said. “At the end of the day, it’s a pool everyone wants to use because it’s warm and that includes the kids too. We’ve still got the spa and steam room where no kids are allowed.” At times the whole complex was under pressure from user demand and that meant there were inevitable minor teething problems that were showing up. Some of those centred around ticket sales for pool use where users were participating in the higher cost aquatic fitness classes or several people passing through the entry gate on a single ticket. “It seems in some ways, we’re bit of a victim of our own success at the moment,” Mr Prescott said.

Three Ashburton sports organisations are weighing up their options today as they watch their dreams of being part of the EA Network Centre’s Sports House disappear. Sport Canterbury, Mid Canterbury Rugby and Mid Canterbury Netball were all tagged as key tenants in the multisport administration base, but when the centre was completed they discovered their promised offices had not been built. Instead there was just one open office space. Netball moved in, but is considering moving out and the other two groups are still to decide where their future lies. At an extraordinary meet-
ing of the Ashburton District Council on Thursday, the three groups told the council they were disappointed the council had done an about-turn on Sports House. The space is still untenanted 10 weeks after the complex opened and if the situation is unchanged in six months the council wants to consider leasing the space to sports related commercial operators. Sport Mid Canterbury’s Jan Cochrane said the council had known for eight years that the three groups required enclosed office space and yet it was tendered and built without the offices. Mayor Angus McKay, however, had said it was possible the offices could be built post con-
struction. That’s what the three organisations want to happen, but the council has currently ruled this out. While the figure of $100,000 had been put forward for the work Mr McKay said that was an estimate, not a quote, but he believed it was pretty close. To find out how the gap between expectation and delivery was so wide, Mr McKay has reconvened the council working group that was in charge of the stadium project. They have to scour through old minutes to see exactly what was promised and whether this was different to the final plan. Mid Canterbury Rugby has to decide within two months whether or not to renew the lease on its current offices and
Mr McKay said he is committed to having the future of Sports House decided within that timeframe – if possible. “Personally I still see it as a hub for all sports for administration. But we have to get money in for it either from ratepayers or from sports groups. Or commercial operators could be an option down the track.” The council has budgeted for an income of $14,000 from the office space. “We’ll find a way forward,” he said. The original concept for Sports House was as an administration base for a wide range of sports, some with full-time staff and others hot desking for a few hours a month.

The Ashburton District Council has taken the plunge and thrown its rural firefighting hat in with South Canterbury. The deal might cost the council an extra $45,000 a year but for that extra spend it will get enhanced training for rural firefighters and an up-speced vehicle maintenance schedule. While some councillors were not happy with the deal, council environmental services manager Jane Donaldson said it was better to go willingly into an amalgamation of its own choosing rather than wait for the national fire authority to force its hand. “If we decide to do this now it has more advantages than sitting back for two or three years when it will be legislation and it will be done to us rather than by us,” she said. South Canterbury principal rural fire officer Rob Hands said that while Ashburton might have a far higher budget than any of the other rural fire authorities in the new southern cluster, this was because it was larger in area and had a high number of fires each year. He allayed councillors’ fears that Ashburton’s funding pool would be spent across the enlarged fire district. “We won’t pool the money and spend it where we like. We’ll spend your money on your district,” Mr Hands said. All districts in the new South Canterbury Rural Fire District would set their own budgets, determined by the level of service they wanted to provide for their community, he said.
In brief Biodiversity grants More than $14,000 has been given to seven organisations and individuals in biodiversity grants by the Ashburton District Council. Recipients were Marr Farms, $1000 for farm native plantings; Ashburton Community Conservation Trust ADC Reserve, $1500, to grow native trees to plant at Lake Camp; Ashburton Community Conservation Trust Maori Lakes, $2062 for a predator trapping programme; Ashburton Community Conservation Trust, Coprosma Interxta, $1251; Mt Somers Walkway Society, $1320; GP and SJ Rackham, $2000 for plantings along Boyers Stream; Blackford Station, $5000, podocarp beech forest protection at the Staveley Iceskating rink.
Prostate cancer Health Minister Jonathan Coleman is confident new clinical guidance for prostate cancer will benefit men with low-risk prostate cancer. The guidelines – released on Thursday – focus on the use of active surveillance of men with low-risk prostate cancer and are intended to help reduce the harm caused by unnecessary treatments. “The new guidance will help standardise care across the country as it sets out who should be considered for active surveillance,” Dr Coleman said. The guidance has been developed by the Ministry of Health and the Prostate Cancer Working Group and a copy can be found on the ministry’s website.
New tool for strokes A new tool to help GPs diagnose and manage strokes is set to be rolled out across the country. Health Minister Jonathan Coleman this week announced the launch of an electronic decision support tool, saying it would help GPs improve the diagnosis and management of patients who have had a stroke. The tool has been launched at the Capital and Coast DHB in Wellington and will be rolled out nationally over the coming months. Strokes are the third leading cause of mortality in New Zealand.

Councillor Neil Brown was not convinced that joining South Canterbury was the best option for Ashburton, he preferred the status quo of a stand-alone fire district. Bigger wasn’t always better, he said. Mr Hands said South Canterbury had already turned down the option of becoming part of a very large Canterbury district because it believed it was better to have local people dealing with local issues, he said. The benefits would come in better training opportunities to meet national standards and better access to vehicle maintenance services. He assured councillors that an enlarged fire district
wouldn’t mean cutting locations or equipment. “That’s definitely not on the radar, you’ll see an increase in services for your units and their members.” There were indications that the way rural fire districts were funded would also change, with bulk funding likely to be the way of the future. And that could mean that districts that did not become part of enlarged authority might be left fighting for the funding crumbs, Mr Hands said. Councillor Darryl Nelson said he could see clear advantages for Ashburton’s rural fire units in being part of an enlarged district.
“If we can do anything to support the people who put the fires out around the district we have to do it. It’s worth $45,000 to this council to have someone come in to this district to train our volunteers,” he said. The amalgamation will mean change for Ashburton’s principal rural fire officer Don Geddes who will become the district’s second in command. “I’ll lose the autonomy of the last 15 years but there are a whole lot of plusses and it’s a bit of a relief to be honest to have the overall responsibility pushed up the line,” he said. The amalgamation will affect 10 rural fire units across the Ashburton District.
Work on Christchurch Hospital’s new Acute Services Building is well under way. The first concrete pour at the new site took place in the early hours of this morning, with 1200m3 of concrete laid – enough to fill 7500 standard bathtubs. There are seven more pours to come, totaling over 300 truckloads of concrete. Canterbury District Health Board chief executive David Meates said each of the pours will take place over a weekend to minimise disruption.
Still on the run A man who jumped out of the dock at Tauranga District Court remains missing two weeks later. Cohen Ratcliffe, 27, had just entered a plea of not guilty to wounding with intent and was remanded into custody when he leapt from the dock on July 9. Ratcliffe ran from the courtroom outside, where he fled down the street with security tailing him. However, he got away and has not been seen since. - NZME

The electronic world is unrelenting when it comes to carving a path through traditional library practices and reader habits. For decades the Ashburton Library has carried the latest editions of newspapers from around New Zealand, but this month most of those newspapers have gone. In their place are computer terminals and a subscription to online reading platform Press Display. Now at the click of a mouse, library users can access hundreds of newspapers from around the world. The library has a number of regulars who turned up each day to read papers from around New Zealand but now, providing those regulars were library mem-
bers, they would be able to read the paper of their choice from their home or at the library by using their library number and pin, district librarian Jill Watson said. The switch to three-day mail deliveries added some urgency to making the switch to digital papers, she said. “By doing this people will be able to access same day papers from many New Zealand cities and towns as well as hundreds of overseas papers.” Press Display also gave library members the ability to read a wide range of newspapers anywhere and at a time that suited them rather than when the library was open. By cancelling its subscriptions to dozens of papers, the library saved $7500 a year;

its annual subscription to Press Display and a much wider range of newspapers cost just $400 more. The library hasn’t totally abandoned the hard copy habit however and will still carry daily copies of the Ashburton Guardian, Otago Daily Times, Oamaru Mail and Greymouth Evening Star. While the on-line system is easy to use, Ms Watson said library staff were happy to provide assistance if people were struggling to log on or find their way around the site. “It will be great for our members to be able to access papers this way and particularly for people who live here but who are from overseas.” Press Display can be used also be used on tablets and phones.
The Corrections Department has confirmed plans to take over Serco’s management of Mt Eden Correctional Facility. Corrections Minister Sam Lotu-Iiga said yesterday a management team would take over the day-to-day running of the prison from Monday “for the immediate future”. Serco’s staff would remain on site, but a Corrections Department Prison Director and their team would oversee the prison. Corrections chief executive Ray Smith also said Serco could also face financial penalties for issues which have emerged over the past week, which include reports of fighting and drug use. “These are likely to be substantial,” he said. “There are also other options potentially available to me under the contract. These include a final warning and early termination of the contract. “I have not taken these options at this stage and will wait the outcome of the Chief Inspector’s review and consider its findings before proceeding further.” The Government’s contract with Serco included a “step in” clause which allowed it to take over the management of Mt Eden for an undefined period. Mr Smith said he would determine how long the “stepping in” process would last for. Serco’s 10-year contract allowed for a review after six years, and this review was already under way. - NZME

In brief Building consents rise The number and value of building consents in the Ashburton District for the year to June 30 continued to rise. For the 12 months to June 30, 1193 consents were issued with a total value of $165 million. During the previous year 1182 consents with a total value of $160 million were issued. From about April, however, the number of consents issued by the Ashburton District Council began to fall behind the previous year but values continued to rise. In May the council issued 136 building consents (152 last year) with 92 issued in June (128). While the number of consents issued for new home builds is now below the peak of 2012/2013 numbers are up on the same month in the previous year.

Repairing broken toilets, cleaning whiteboards, and fixing internet dramas are not exactly the most glamorous tasks. However for Mt Somers Springburn School principal Brent Gray, it’s all part of the job. Taking on the top job at any school comes with its own set of challenges and responsibilities. However to be in charge of a small rural school, principals essentially have to be a jack-of-all-trades, able to switch from Board of Trustees reports to fixing the plumbing at a moment’s notice. Brent wouldn’t have it any other way. Taking on the principal’s role at Mt Somers Springburn School four years ago was a big change from his previous job as assistant principal at Ashburton Borough School. “There’s an expectation that if the computer’s not working, you’re an ICT guru, or if the toilet’s broken you’re a plumber,” he said. Unlike a lot of schools Mt Somers Springburn operates its own school buses, adding a whole other aspect to Brent’s role. “Another add on to the job is being a bus manager,” he says.
“We’re a bit unique here.” With a roll of about 90 Year 1-8 students, he has also had to get used to having a lot more buy-in from the small Mt Somers community. “The key to a school like this is that it is the hub of the community,” he said. “We’re lucky in here in the respect that we’ve got a community that’s really involved, but I guess you also hear from the community pretty quickly if there’s something that’s not going how they want it.” Communication is key when it comes to a small school, he said. He is also full of praise for the collaborative approach taken by local principals in the area, with support for new principals always just a phone call away. “The principals’ network around here is awesome,” he said. Unlike most small school principals Brent does not teach. “We’re supported by the board here to run a fifth classroom, so because we’ve got that fifth teacher the only teaching I do is during release time or if someone calls in sick at 7.30 in the morning and it’s not easy to find a reliever,” he said. “It’s a great way to stay in the classroom.” Brent has had a varied career in educa-
tion, having worked at primary schools in Christchurch as well as the college of education. His education career also brought him into contact with the law on more than one occasion - but not for any transgressions on his part. “It was certainly an eye opener,” he said with a laugh, referring to his tenure as a hostel manager at Waitaki Boys’ High School in Oamaru. “I’d never had the police at my door before I worked there, and I’d never been to court before I worked there, but it was all in support of the boys.” Like he says, when you put 120 boys together you’re bound to have a few surprises. A change of pace was in order, and he and his family made the move to Mid Canterbury. “It’s been outstanding,” he says of his tenure at the school. One of the most important things he’s learned in his time at a small school is the importance of looking out for each other. “When you look outside and see them all sitting together eating their lunch, they look out for each other,” he said. “We’ve got a great group of kids - they’re like a family.”
The murder of Stratford woman Gwen Blake was described as brutal, callous and inexplicable by a sentencing judge yesterday. David Blake, the victim’s son, appeared for sentence before Justice Rebecca Ellis in the High Court at New Plymouth yesterday. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and was told he will have to serve 16 years before he is eligible for parole. Blake had pleaded guilty to the murder of Gwen Blake, 71, at an earlier court appearance in April this year. - NZME
180 cats rescued The SPCA has rescued about 180 cats from an Auckland home living in filthy conditions. Chief executive Andrea Midgen said some of the cats were being kept in very small cages, some did not have access to food or water and the owner did not know how many cats were on the property. “There was a lot of filth, a lot of faeces. The ammonia count was at alarm levels,” she said. Ms Midgen said the SPCA had visited the residential property a few times as a result of complaints, but would not say where it was or give any details about who was keeping the cats. About 15 SPCA staff, including most of the dog staff, have been assessing the cats since they were removed from the property. - NZME
School to stay open The decision to keep a failing charter school open was based on data that showed the children had virtually nowhere else to go. Education Minister Hekia Parata yesterday announced she would give Te Pumanawa o te Wairua until the end of the year to meet new targets, despite a damning audit report about its finances, achievement and governance, and ministry advice it should close. She took full responsibility for both the decision to open the Northland school and to keep it open, she said. The minister said her choice was focused on the 39 children at the school who were not guaranteed an education elsewhere. A report from the Ministry of Education gave a profile that showed the children presented “the most challenges of all the Partnership Schools’ student population”. It showed one had no previous record of formal schooling. - NZME

When it comes to test driving a smartphone app that would make the public its eyes and ears for roading problems, the Ashburton District Council prefers to let larger councils iron out the bugs before it takes it on board. Christchurch City Council uses an app that allows people to report problems around the city and it has been inundated with calls about roads, rubbish, traffic and graffiti, but Ashburton’s chief executive Andrew Dalziel said the council won’t be a leader in this field. “We need to balance the desire for improved digital infrastructure and interconnectivity against the risks and vulnerabilities with this going wrong. Due to the size of our information services department with real resource constraints, we have to prioritise,” he said. “The biggest issues with the app will be how it links into the council’s internal systems and cyber security. Christchurch will undoubtedly have some different systems to us. “So we would need an IT applications specialist to make the app work at this end and to ensure that there are no cyber security risks or that the risks are man-
ageable, ie that hackers can’t corrupt the roading database or get access to the private information of the public making the reports.” In its first month of use in Christchurch, there were 670 reports made using the Snap, Send, Solve app. Mr Dalziel believes the number of people who had been using phones to snap and email problems would have been similar. “We are interested in all things digital however, and our information services manager will keep an eye on it and see how Christchurch get on with it. Let them iron out the bugs so to speak. If it works then we can put it on our list,” Mr Dalziel said. The big question would be that out of the district’s 32,000 plus people, how many would actually use the app balanced against the costs involved in running it and monitoring information. Currently people could phone the council, make a service request on the council’s website or write, email or call in in person if they had concerns about issues around the district, Mr Dalziel said. When the app had been well tested, and any problems ironed out, the council could look at using it as another means of fault reporting, he said.

Students check out Mt Hutt A group of Chinese students has been checking out what Mid Canterbury has to offer this week as part of a school exchange. Mount Hutt College has been hosting eight students and two teachers from the Wuhan Foreign Language School of Wuhan, Hubei, China. Two of the students, Linjing Han and Shanshan Zhang, spent time in class
with their Kiwi “buddies” Olivia Shears and Mia Bart. The students have also visited a Fonterra dairy farm, Mt Hutt Ski Area, and the Methven Resort hot pools. This is the second year a group from the school have visited Mid Canterbury to experience life and culture in a New Zealand school and community.
Time up for dog owners Dog owners have one week to register their dogs before they face a late payment penalty. The Ashburton District Council has processed 2500 applications for dog registrations this year, with 29 per cent of known dog owners renewing their registrations on-line. This compares to 20 per cent for the same period last year, council environmental monitoring manager Rick Catchpowle said. All dogs over the age of three months must be registered, including farm dogs, but dog numbers are never an exact science, Mr Catchpowle said, as inevitably
there were dogs around the district that had never become ‘legal.’ This year council introduced a discount for rural dog owners if they registered more than two dogs. This has been done as a way to encourage all farmers to register all dogs, Mr Catchpowle said. The council charges a registration fee of $44 each for dogs one and two and $22 for each subsequent rural dog. Urban dogs cost $65 to register but $44 for selected owners or for dogs that have been desexed. Both urban and rural dogs attract a $22 per dog fee for late registrations.

Simon a champion Where to now for Simon Barnett? The former Ashburton College head boy has reached the pinnacle of his career this year, winning Dancing With The Stars following his radio programme being announced the best on-air music breakfast show in the country. reaking into tears was not something Simon Barnett wanted to do on live television last Sunday night. “I didn’t want to cry, I thought ‘Oh my goodness, this is going to be embarrassing’. But when it happens you can’t stop it,” he told the Guardian this week following his winning performance in the Dancing With The Stars (DWTS) final. He first choked up in a pre-filmed segment when talking about his dad supporting him on the show, then again later after performing and after he and his dance partner Vanessa Cole were announced as the show’s winners. Now looking back, he thinks it was due to a culmination of exhaustion and relief, as well as joy at winning and the sadness of the show ending. “I felt completely spent,” he said. “I felt for 10 and a half weeks I have truly given everything I have, I can’t give any more hours in the day, I can’t give any more energy, I can’t train any harder, I hadn’t slept a lot.” He would wake in the night to go through dance moves in his head, and worry if he could not remember steps. The gruelling seven-days-per-week rehearsal and performance schedule was combined with the highs of the experience, and Mr Barnett recounted an experience this week on his More FM radio breakfast show when he and Ms Cole walked into a coffee shop and customers stood and applauded. He told the Guardian about another example of an old couple pulling over their car in the street to say how thrilled they were at the dancing couple’s win. “It’s just a lovely part of the journey,” Mr Barnett said. “People are nice all the time, through the series we have just been quite overwhelmed by the generosity of spirit people have displayed.” It had been an incredible experience to go from the underdog of the competition, being scored second to last on the first show, to getting three perfect 10s in the final and and a high number of public votes to win the competition. “It was just tremendously rewarding to win and Vanessa and I couldn’t quite believe it when they announced our names, it was a massive high.” Mr Barnett’s plans for the future may include more television. He is already a TV show stalwart, starting out hosting What Now from 1988 to 1992, and subsequent television jobs including hosting Stars In Their Eyes and Mitre 10 Dream Home in recent years. Mr Barnett revealed he had no set television shows coming up, but was approached at the end of the DWTS show by a TV3 executive to be involved in a show, but there was no word on what that might be or any dates. “My life is a day-by-day thing, I look at anything that comes along,” Mr Barnett said. Choosing to do television shows was not in any way about career building or establishing a brand, he said. “I have never seen myself as a brand, I know some people talk like that. I’m Simon or Si, I have never been part of that, I have not had any interest in being a brand. “I guess I’m a family man, I guess I try to be a reasonable human being, it (television) is a part of my life, but it’s not my life. It’s one part of my life and it’s a part I really enjoy. I do things that interest me and might challenge me.” There were no plans over the next few years

at least to leave his award-winning breakfast radio show, which he hosts with Kiwi icon Gary McCormick. “Yea, I love the crew I work with there. I have had to really split my time (while doing DWTS), they have been enormously supportive.” He was enjoying having free time following the end of DWTS, although Monday had been “horrendously busy” doing publicity stills, filming 13 new Si and Gary television commercials, and undertaking numerous television, radio and newspaper interviews. On Tuesday he took his wife and daughter out for lunch, and he was looking forward to having some free time for a change and even doing some chores about the house. Aged 48, Mr Barnett lives in Christchurch with his wife Jodi and they have four daughters, aged 15 to 21. His mum Frances, who brought up Simon and his four siblings as a single mother in Ashburton, also today lives in the city. She had been “a massive fan of the show” but missed the final due to being overseas for an extended family member’s graduation. “We have spoken (since the win), and she’s over the moon,” Mr Barnett said. Mr Barnett said he had made new friends on the show, and his fellow competitors were “all fabulous, really good people”. This description included runner-up Chrystal Chenery of The Bachelor fame. Mr Barnett said he had always liked her as a person and believed in some respects she had been unfairly maligned by The Bachelor show’s mean-girl portrayal. He did not wish to comment, however, on a news story this week where she had called for radio host Dominic Harvey to be held accountable for posting an inappropriate screenshot of her. “Something like that is difficult for me to comment on because I know both of them personally,” Mr Barnett said. Mr Barnett wanted to thank the Mid Cantabrians who supported him in the competition, including his former teachers who told the Guardian last week they would be watching the show and that he deserved to win. These included Elaine Vallender, who was Ashburton College’s head of the music when Simon was attending the school in the early 1980s. Three dead in shooting A gunman yesterday opened fire in a cinema in the US state of Louisiana, fatally shooting two people and wounding seven others before killing himself, police said. The shooter in the city of Lafayette, described as a white male in his 50s, appeared to have died after turning his gun on himself, local police said. “It appears that the shooter has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after discharg-
ing his weapon numerous times,” police officer Jim Craft said. Witnesses said the shooting took place at the Grand 16 theatre in Lafayette, during a showing of the film Trainwreck. “My heart is broken and all my thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Louisiana,” tweeted comedian Amy Schumer, who has a starring role in the movie. The shooting comes as a jury
deliberates the death penalty for the gunman in a 2012 cinema massacre in Colorado that left 12 dead and 70 injured. The Louisiana shooting is almost exactly three years after the shooting in the city of Aurora. Television images in Lafayette showed a hectic scene at the cinema, which was surrounded by dozens of emergency medical vehicles and police cars. Craft said four police officers
entered the theatre to confront the shooter and heard gunshots. They discovered the shooter dead at the scene, he said. “Prayers for Lafayette at Grand Theater. Talking to state police colonel about shooting in Lafayette,” tweeted state governor Bobby Jindal, who, at a press conference near the shooting scene a short time later, expressed his support for the victims and first responders. - AFP

Turkish warplanes bomb IS targets in Syria Turkish fighter jets have bombed Islamic State targets inside Syria for the first time. The dramatic escalation of fighting follows the killing of a Turkish soldier in cross-border clashes. Three Turkish F-16s took off yesterday from the southeastern Turkish city of Diyarbakir in an early morning bombing raid against three IS targets, dropping four guided bombs, a statement from the prime minister’s office said. The operation came after the first major cross-border clashes between Turkey and IS jihadists on Thursday left one Turkish soldier and one militant dead, thrusting Turkey into an open conflict with the Islamists. The bombing raid was the first by the Turkish air force on IS since the Islamists began their advance across Iraq and Syria in 2013, seizing control
of swathes of territory. It also came as Turkey, after months of negotiations, finally gave the green light for the US to use a key air base in its south for its air strikes against IS. The decision to launch the air force operation was taken at a meeting of security officials in Ankara late on Thursday chaired by Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. “In this context ... an operation was carried out against targets belonging to Daesh inside the Syrian border,” the statement said. “Three of our F-16s hit ... three targets,” it said, adding that “the government of the Turkish Republic is determined to take the necessary measures to protect national security”. The planes dropped their bombs just before 4am local time and all returned safely. On Thursday, one Turkish
soldier was killed and two sergeants wounded in the Kilis region by fire from IS militants on the Syrian side of the border. A jihadist was also reported dead. Turkish tanks then responded by opening fire on IS targets in Syria. The fighting erupted after the killing of 32 people in a suicide bombing on Monday in a Turkish town on the Syrian border that the government blamed on IS. This sparked an upsurge in violence in Turkey’s Kurdishdominated southeast, where many accuse authorities of collaborating with IS, accusations Ankara denies. Turkish police yesterday launched raids to arrest suspected IS members and Kurdish militants, in an apparent bid to stamp down on all sources of violence. A total of 251 people were
detained, the prime minister’s office said in a statement, adding that the raids took place in 13 provinces across Turkey. Police had raided addresses in several Istanbul districts in search of members of IS, the Kurdistan Workers Party and other militant groups. The Dogan news agency said about 5000 police were involved in the Istanbul operation. As well as IS and the PKK, the operation targeted suspected members of the PKK’s youth wing the The Patriotic Revolutionary Youth Movement and the Marxist Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party Front, Anatolia said. Turkey has been accused of colluding with IS extremists in the hope they might prove useful in its aim of knocking out Syrian President Bashar alAssad. Donald Trump has toured the Texas-Mexico border to condemn illegal immigration and court Latino voters, but ignited fresh controversy as border agents boycotted his visit. The real estate mogul and White House contender, who is well ahead of his Republican rivals in most polls, is running an aggressive campaign that has condemned illegal immigration. He flew into the border town of Laredo yesterday in his private jet airliner emblazoned with his name, protecting himself from the harsh sunshine by wearing a white baseball hat with his slogan “Make America Great Again”. “There’s nothing more important than what I’m doing,” he said on arrival, calling illegal immigration “a huge problem”. He immediately laid into fellow Republican contender Rick Perry, accusing him of doing “a terrible job” as governor of Texas but praising his successor, the Republican Greg Abbott. - AFP
Corpses discovered Seven corpses, including some with signs of torture and a decapitated body, have been discovered in the violenceplagued southern Mexican state of Guerrero. The bodies were all male and were discovered in the mountainous Zitlala township, according a statement from Guerrero’s prosecutor’s office. The statement said the corpses displayed “visible signs of torture”. - AFP
Baby stabbed to death A young mother whose six-weekold baby girl was found dead with her throat slit has been charged with murder. The 26-year-old was arrested outside her house in the Newcastle suburb of Wallsend yesterday after the infant was found dead inside. She will remain in custody until she appears before Newcastle Local Court on Saturday, police say. - AAP
Earth twin? Astronomers hunting for another Earth have found the closest match yet, a potentially rocky planet circling its star at the same distance as our home orbits the Sun. Named Kepler 452b, the planet is about 60 per cent larger than Earth. It could have active volcanoes, oceans, sunshine like ours, twice as much gravity and a year that lasts 385 days, NASA scientists said. This planet sits squarely in the Goldilocks zone of its star, where life could exist because it is neither too hot nor too cold to support liquid water, the US space agency said. - AFP

Inquiry will force reality check Stu Oldham

he parliamentary inquiry into voluntary euthanasia will begin against a backdrop of public opinion coloured by personal experience, personal perspective and personal position. These three elements have always affected the debate. They all influence personal belief and they all make a broad, rational and entirely objective look at voluntary euthanasia difficult. The inquiry was announced this week, soon after the Voluntary Euthanasia society presented a petition calling for a parliamentary committee to investigate attitudes toward assisted dying. Since the death of Lecretia Seales, there have been innumerable calls for a new law allowing assisted dying in certain circumstances, and many letters to newspapers suggesting the debate will not be easy. Last month, Guardian correspondents wrote sometimes heart-rending letters describing the misery of their loved ones, even with warm and professional care, as they died slowly and without dignity. Others acknowledged the emotional toll of a lingering death but worried voluntary euthanasia should not be introduced if its most enduring effect was to save the pain of the people left behind. But as the debate continued the people closest to those dying of terminal illness continued to deal with the inevitability of making dreadful – even if compassionate – end-of-life decisions. A survey of GPs released yesterday found 16 per cent of respondents withheld treatment at the last death at which they were the attending doctor, to either not prolong life or to hasten the end. Another 4.5 per cent prescribed, supplied or administered a drug to hasten death. The findings were similar to a report 15 years ago, despite changes in practice and technology that some might have expected to have had an influence. Objectively or otherwise, people are still risking their careers and freedom for assisted death. Tolerated illegality must not be the only option when objective debate is too hard.

t’s a sad day when your favourite gumboots finally give up the ghost. There’s something about a really excellent pair of gummies that transcends material and style – after enough wearing, they come to seem like old friends. I’ve got a pair that have adventured halfway across the world, keeping my toes cosy and heels snug. They’ve trudged through ice and mud, forded rivers, run along beaches, been slept on by the dog, and stepped in more types of animal excrement than I even care to count. Lately, though, they’ve started to bite. Small nips at first, but now the gnawing on the Achilles in incessant. It’s skin against rubber, and I know this can only end badly. Still, I’m not quite ready to let them go. Thick woollen socks deployed as a last defence, I’m planning for their last hurrah. Before we reach their last, let’s go back their first adventures. Despite multiple scrubbings, both boots still retain traces of penguin poo odour, that constant reminder of their past life protecting the feet of Antarctic tour guides. They started their service life in the far south, before being eased back into a temperate climate via the ski carpark of Mt Hutt. Soon they were being worn everywhere, and even dabbled in the realm of fashion. Whether teamed with floral dresses for that arresting “farm chic” look at inner city

farmers’ markets, or worn as protection against errant snakes at an Australian A&P show, they were in their element. In fact, they were so in demand that at one point they were subject to an actual shoenapping. Two, actually, because they were stolen and stolen back again... In a story reminiscent of the dognapping that used to happen between my mum and my grandmother’s houses and the timeshare dog, the boots have
made their way to Auckland and back again, smuggled in checked luggage and worn as trophies at the other end. They’ve visited pubs (both blue and brown), hiked up glaciers, landed in the Southern Alps, and trudged to and from Supervalue at all times of day. Although they’ve been relegated to washing line duty of late (warm, dry feet whilst hanging the laundry are totally under-rated), there is still one more adventure in my valiant gummies yet.
The bite of the boots had me briefly considering sending them for a surfing lesson in Shark Alley, but I value my own limbs too much for that proposition. Upon what new grounds will their treadless soles tread? That remains to be seen. This gumboot tour operator is open to suggestions – and on the market for some heavy duty strapping tape to boot. No matter the final destination, these favourite gumboots are going out in style.

that we have to help and support others. The bible in Romans 12:4-5 says “Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are all parts of His one body, and each of us has different work to do. And since we are all one body in Christ, we belong to each other, and each of us needs all the oth-
ers.” Paul, when he is writing about the body of Christ is talking about the church. However I would like to suggest that what makes a strong healthy church will also help to make a strong healthy community. Each one of us is a special and unique part of the community that we live in and our community can only be its strongest when each one of us use our talents, abilites and resources for the good of the whole community not just for ourselves. I believe that each person in our community has something to of-
fer to the community as a whole. It was great to have been at the recent Trustpower Community Awards and see this in action. So many people giving of their time and resources, not for their own benefit but for the benefit of the entire community. Global growth up, despite Greece G
lobal headlines have been dominated by Greek issues during the last three months and shifted focus away from economic recovery. Whatever the outcome economically, Greece is now less important than it was five years ago. Importantly foreign private sector exposures have been reduced. We remain positive on global economic growth continuing to recover. In the United States, the rebound in macro data continues and GDP growth of 3 per cent per annum is expected in the next few quarters. We are also observing a cyclical recovery in Europe, supported by accommodative monetary policy. In China, the structural slowdown in growth continues, but recent monetary policy measures should support short-term growth.

Australian and NZ Equity Markets Australian equities underperformed most markets with banks under pressure as regula-
tors signal the need for higher capital requirements. Consumer sectors were also weak with both the retail and media sectors declining. Energy stocks performed well earlier in the period, recovering on the back of a bounce in the oil price (particularly in Australian dollar terms). Our local New Zealand share market returns were modestly lower over the past three months driven by a weaker electricity sector. During the period the New Zealand market absorbed a number of share placements and the second instalment payable by Meridian shareholders. A decision on the Tiwai Point smelter has been delayed and this also weighed on sentiment.
Fixed Interest Market New Zealand interest rates were dominated by a cut to the
Official Cash Rate and shortterm rates also factor in two further cuts to the Official Cash Rate. This is great news for borrowers, but it becomes harder for income investors. Recent bond issues have been very highly sought after and we would expect this demand to continue going forward. United States authorities are still expected to increase short-term interest rates later this year, but the increases are expected to be staged and the impacts gauged before successive moves are made. Elsewhere, of the markets we follow, Hong Kong and Japan were the strongest. Japanese equity returns have been driven by significant monetary policy stimulus which has boosted the competitiveness of the region’s exporters, creating an inflow into equities. China’s new round of monetary stimulus is supporting equity markets and has been reflected in Hong Kong equities.

Bridges says minerals industry ‘strong and resilient’ BY LAURA MILLS Despite the loss of more than 1000 mining jobs on the West Coast in recent years, Energy and Resources Minister Simon Bridges says the minerals industry is “strong and resilient”. In 2010, about 180 jobs went at Pike River and 400 at Spring Creek, followed by 800 at Stockton and 60 at Oceana Gold, with 120 more to go this year as the Reefton mine closes down. Westport is braced to lose a further 100 jobs when Holcim pulls the pin on its Cape Foulwind cement factory and quarry next year. Strongman open-cast mine has now closed, and Bathurst has reduced job numbers in a restructure. Speaking at the Minerals West Coast forum in Shantytown on Thursday, Mr Bridges acknowledged that the minerals industry, and the West Coast in particular, was going through some challenging times. “But I think we can take heart from the industry’s strong overall growth over the last 10 years, and the knowledge that, even in tough times, there are still more people working in the mining industry across the country than there was a decade ago,” Mr Bridges said.

He was optimistic about the future of the minerals industry. Crown agency New Zealand Petroleum and Minerals continued to see healthy levels of permitting activity, he said. Stevenson Mining was still working to develop the Te Kuha coal deposit, just out of Wesport, which would be valuable for blending with other West Coast coals for export, and Trans Tasman Resources had applied to explore for ironsands off the West Coast. There was also the recent interest in garnets on the West Coast, with applications for up
to 30 permits to prospect or explore, Mr Bridges said. “While most of the prospecting and exploration for garnets in New Zealand is still in its infancy, and it will take several years of work to understand if there are commercially viable quantities of garnet for mining, this interest is very promising for the West Coast.” One of the most important means of ‘growing’ the industry was to attract more investment in exploration, and high-quality data was vital for that. The Government spent $4 million in aeromagnetic surveys of Northland and the West Coast in 2011 and 2012. Mr Bridges announced yesterday they would now spend $6m on regional aeromagnetic surveys over more than 23,000sq skm in Nelson, Marlborough, parts of Otago and Southland. “There can be no doubt times are tough right now but our industry is strong, resilient and adaptable. And there is a lot of potential for further discoveries to grow mining for New Zealand and our regions,” the minister said. “Mining has been a mainstay on the West Coast for the last 150 years, and long may that continue.” - NZME

Leading by example By Erin TaskEr For Thorsten Windhorst, karate is a way of life. He’s passionate about the sport and teaching Mid Canterbury’s young people the art of karate, and this month he’s been recognised for the work he does by being named Sport Canterbury’s coach of the month – an honour he was proud to accept. Together with his wife Jacqui, Windhorst runs the Ashburton JION Karate Dojo. They oversee three childrens’ groups, one youth and one adult group, and another group in Methven. Altogether they have around 60 students – huge growth for such a young club. It’s only been running since 2007 and has grown from only six members at the start, to what it is today. Windhorst himself started learning karate as a youngster growing up in Germany. “Karate is a way of life for me. I enjoy all aspects of the martial art,” Windhorst said. “There is a great satisfaction in coaching students, and providing them with the skills needed to defend themselves, to compete
at national or even international level, or simply to improve their general fitness or concentration levels. “When I first started training karate, somebody took time to coach me; now it’s my turn to give back to my students.” Windhorst began coaching in 1993 in Germany, at the club where he started training himself as a teenager. After about three years, he opened his own dojo and later, he and his wife founded the JION Karate Club. Upon moving to New Zealand, the Windhorsts immersed themselves in the New Zealand karate scene, and in 2010 Windhorst was elected onto the Karate New Zealand Coaching Council. “Having assisted at nearly all the New Zealand national training camps since 2008, I was keen to help coach the national team at international level, and this year I was able to do this for the first time in April, at the Australian Open Karate Champs in Sydney. “I will also be travelling to the Commonwealth Champs in India in September as assistant coach for the New Zealand national team,” Windhorst said.
Recently the club sent seven students to the national karate championships, and in September five of their students will join that New Zealand team taking part in the Commonwealth Championships in New Delhi, India. As a coach, Windhorst said he had to consider everything from the age, physical ability and personal goals of his students, as well as their overall wellbeing, attitude and behaviour of the team. “Mutual respect between the students, the coach and the supporters, trust and loyalty, are all vital for the smooth running of the team.” He likes to think that he leads by example. “I put 100 per cent effort in and expect my students to do the same. “My wife and I like to be organised, keeping our students and parents informed. “Setting challenges, like grading, fitness tests, competitions, demonstrations or assisting in class - these are ways to keep students motivated and always upholding our dojo values. “I believe all these things help the students.”
VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION PROGRAMME In partnership with Sport New Zealand, Sport Canterbury show appreciation for Sport Makers across the Canterbury West Coast region. Over 750,000 sport volunteers contribute over 50 million voluntary hours a year to sport in New Zealand. They call them Sport Makers because they make sport happen. Through the Lotto Volunteer Foundation, Sport Canterbury recognises a volunteer community coach each month. The title is awarded with a gift for their contribution to the community, club or school they support as a volunteer. The coaches recognised are nominated by their club members or school staff. They are nominated for going ‘beyond the call of duty’ and giving young people a fantastic experience of participating in sport.

Dedicated to the dream By Erin TaskEr Ryan Feutz has the talent and desire to make it big on the football field. The 14-year-old Ashburton boy is home from Spain where he’s spent the last four months at the Cracks CF football academy in Valencia, but his immediate future is unknown. He wants to return to Spain as soon as he can, but his parents simply can’t afford to send him back. They’ve already spent thousands on ensuring Ryan gets the exposure to the kind of football he needs to make it to the big time, and they’ve reached the end of the line. Ryan wasn’t due home until later this year but parents Greg and Priscilla have brought him home. It’s summer in Spain – the off season for football. Kids were heading off for holidays, and they decided their boy needed to see his family again. But, more than anything, they’re finding that making it big in the sport of football is expensive. They know their boy is talented and they want to see him achieve his dream of one day playing for a powerhouse team on the world football stage, like Real Madrid or Arsenal.
But now, Ryan’s footballing future is in limbo as his parents search for financial backing to allow Ryan to continue with the elite level of training. For him, the past four months – and the two months he spent there late last year which resulted in him being offered a place at the academy this year – have been invaluable. Two intense training sessions a day, games within the academy scene, and being exposed to some of the best tactical and technical coaching available – Ryan’s game has grown immensely. His parents haven’t seen him play for more than a year, but they know their striker son – who is averaging around 1.5 goals per game in Spain - will be a completely different player when they do get to see him play again. Ryan knows he’s lucky to have had the opportunities he’s had so far, and he’s making the most of it. “Every training I do, I feel like I want to go 100 per cent. “I don’t like going 80 per cent,” Ryan said. “They tell me sometimes to slow it down.” But Ryan doesn’t want to slow down. He has a three-stage, 15-year plan he’s determined to see out. When he turns 18 he’s hoping a professional club will come
knocking at his door – ideally Real Madrid, but naturally he’d be happy with any professional club offer. After 10 years he wants to be a top player within a professional club, and from there the ultimate dream is to be picked up by one of the power house football clubs. “I want to keep going down that track, I don’t want to detour too far,” Ryan said. If he can’t raise the funds to get back to Spain, he’ll go back into the New Zealand system. “He could still achieve his dreams from home soil, but it won’t be as easy, and it will still cost money because most of the opportunities available to him will be in cities. Greg said his family is an average Mid Canterbury family. They’ve had worked hard for everything they have, and they’ve done everything they can to provide Ryan with what he needs. But money only goes so far. “He’s got the talent and the skill to be as good as the best in the country for his age, and he has proven that. “But the best facilities are the best because they’re often in the expensive areas as such,” Greg said. That’s the environment that Ryan needs to be in if he’s to become the best, Greg said.
Sport is a gamble, Ryan and his family know that. He could get injured tomorrow, or next year. But one thing that won’t change, they say, is Ryan’s love for the game. He may only be 14, but he is dedicated to his dream. He’s doing school via correspondence and has settled in to life in Spain, half a world away from his family – a big step for someone so young. He has been taken under the wing of a nice Spanish family, who have made him feel at home, taken him places, and made him feel special on his birthday. Ryan knows that if he wants to make it big in the football world, Spain is the best place for him to do it from, but if that doesn’t work out, he’ll find a way through the New Zealand system. “He’s got one thing better than money, and that’s talent, and with me pushing the envelope to the max and trying to get him into the right environment, hopefully the dots will connect,” Greg said. With options running out, the family hopes that someone might be able to help them. A sponsor maybe, to help Ryan to achieve his dream. The reward for that person? Hopefully the ability to one day say, “I helped that kid become the star he is today”.
Shorn of their captain, the two best new ball bowlers and top allrounder, New Zealand’s cricket trip to Africa will be a special challenge. Rolling mauls - the scourg I
t’s the bad smell that won’t go away. The sham tactic that has become rugby’s great leveller. But no matter that All Blacks coach Steve Hansen is right when he says rolling mauls are “bloody boring”; that they are the scourge of today’s game afforded their own ridiculous, unfathomably contrary laws - they are going to be the foundation stone of the World Cup. Whatever anyone says now about using it sparingly, the reality in October will be different. Come the final 20 minutes of each knockout game, there will be one thought and one thought only running through the minds of most teams - force a penalty, hoof the ball into the corner and set up the rolling maul. Under pressure - it will be the move of choice for South Africa, England, Ireland, Wales, France, Argentina and Australia. The All Blacks will get their first
taste of this at Ellis Park tomorrow morning (NZ time). There will be an element of phoney war about the clash - neither team is going to give everything away - but the All Blacks are going to be asked to defend a significant number of rolling mauls. “If we are under any illusions about what South Africa are going to do, we know they will scrum for penalties, they will kick for lineouts and they will drive,” said Hansen after his side’s 38-19 victory against Argentina. It was a comment sparked by the two soft tries the All Blacks conceded to the Pumas driving maul. “I think it is the hardest part of the game to fix,” lamented Hansen. “One of the things we didn’t do was break it down early enough. We just didn’t get in on their wedges quick enough and as soon as they took it off centre we were
in trouble. They were soft tries.” And they were tries that have set a nation’s nerves jangling. No country does angst quite like New Zealand in World Cup year. The perception has firmed that the All Blacks are neither good exponents nor good defenders of the driving maul. There’s concern the All Blacks are vulnerable - that for all their explosive power, pass and catch excellence and intuitive genius, they could be done over by boofhead football teams whose only offering is a No 10 with a howitzer boot and a pack full of slow-advancing muscle. Perception is not quite right in regards to the All Blacks’ ability to use the rolling maul. They scored a few tries from lineout drives last year and the Crusaders - full of All Blacks - were capable, probably more than, of forming a useful phalanx in the final rounds
of Super Rugby this year. But it’s not a tactic that is top of the agenda for the All Blacks. They predominantly look to take lineout ball off the top and shift it quickly. Their natural instinct is to use the width of the field, isolate defenders and create one-on-one encounters. And because the rolling maul is not often used as an attacking weapon, it follows that the All Blacks are not naturally good at defending it. It doesn’t appear to be an area the players read well or have well-honed instincts and as a consequence, they have struggled to be consistently good at defending it. That’s been a niggle for the last few years, but is now a serious concern because mauling has moved from an occasional to almost default attacking choice for several teams. The South Africans have, for the last decade at least, been better exponents
Sia clocks up his 150th BY ERIN TASKER Sia Fifita left Tonga as a teenager seeking opportunities through study, work and rugby, and in New Zealand he found more than what he was looking for. More than 15 years later he’s made a home in Ashburton and has become one of the most capped players to don the blue and gold jersey of the Hampstead Rugby Club. His last game of the season last Saturday, was his 151st, but he celebrated it as his 150th. His actual 150th game was an away game against Celtic, and he wanted to mark the occasion at home. It was a happy ending to not such a great season for Hampstead. “It’s a team game, it’s not an individual game, and all you can do is just do your best,” Fifita said. “They did way better this year than last year, but we didn’t win many games.” The bulk of the 35-year-old’s 151 games for Hampstead were at firstfive, but his 80-plus caps for Mid Canterbury were mainly at halfback. Fifita arrived in New Zealand as an 18-year-old, beginning his journey in Auckland where he studied science. “In the Islands there’s not many opportunities there, so I took the opportunity to come over here and look for a better future for me and the rest of my family,” Fifita said. In 2002, he came to Ashburton and first played rugby for Allenton.
Today, he’s still happy in the town he now calls home with his wife and three children, aged nine, six and 15 months. It’s his kids that are at the forefront of his mind when he ponders his rugby playing future. He’s yet to decide whether he’ll take to the field again next season. His daughter was the reason he stopped playing for Mid Canterbury. She told him she hated rugby because it took him away from home too much. But she was happy for him to keep playing club rugby; he didn’t have to travel so far or spend as many midweek nights away training for that. His rugby playing future may be uncertain for now, but his family’s immediate future remains in Ashburton. Fifita said he’d grown used to the colder climate; when the family return to Tonga for holidays now, he complains that it’s too hot. Mid Canterbury has become his home. rom the low of being told his World Cup chances were at risk after he signed with Ulster, a blow made worse by a knee injury at the Blues, things are suddenly looking a lot more positive for Charles Piutau. After a good performance against Manu Samoa in which he looked busy and energetic while many of his All Black teammates looked flat, to another consistent effort against Argentina in Christchurch during which he made the most of another start, Piutau has every right be happy with his lot. He has another chance to press his claims for a place on the All Blacks’ plane to London in September when he starts on the left wing against South Africa at Ellis Park tomorrow. With Julian Savea, who has yet to play for the All Blacks this year, Israel Dagg and Ben Smith the front runners for the back three spots, Piutau is in a highly competitive position. And with Steve Hansen able to select only 31 players for the World Cup, the All Blacks selectors might decide to gamble and take only Savea, Dagg and Smith, in the knowledge that Colin Slade and Beauden Barrett can cover wing and fullback. All Piutau can do, of course, is control the way he performs, and he is certainly doing that. He led the way with the highest metres with the ball at Apia Park

Strawbridge home After almost three weeks in hospital Chiefs Assistant Coach Andrew Strawbridge has been discharged from hospital. He’d fallen critically ill with an eye infection, while in Samoa for the Samoa vs All Blacks Test match earlier in the month. Mr Strawbridge says it has been a traumatic journey and he is realistic that it will take a while for him to fully recover. He also thanks all those involved in his recovery so far. - NZME

Manly ‘banana-skin team’ BY JOSEPH PEARSON The Warriors were kept scoreless by the Roosters last weekend but Ben Matulino says the team haven’t spoken about it, prior to their meeting with Manly today. The Roosters boast the best defence in the NRL and the Warriors struggled to get anywhere near their line to create any pressure. Only the 15th-placed Titans have an error count as bad as the Warriors do in the competition and their reckless handling in Sydney cost them dear. The attack, orchestrated by Shaun Johnson, couldn’t continue to flourish as it has done in the Warriors’ past three matches as the Roosters ruthlessly shut them down. The Storm were the last team to hold the Warriors scoreless, winning 30-0 at Mt Smart in September 2009. “It hasn’t really been spoken about,” said Matulino. “There’s a lot of X-factor in our team, with people like Shaun [Johnson], Sam [Tomkins] and Tui [Lolohea]. “They all can score points and if we really had the chance to score any points, it would have had to come with 60-metre tries. “We didn’t get too many attacking opportunities with the way their defence came off the line.

we’ve got to play those tough teams.” Matulino was facing fellow prop Kiwi Jared Waerea-Hargreaves in the Roosters front row and injuries to the Warriors pack have forced them to reshuffle in recent weeks. “He’s always tough,” said Matulino. “Every time you play him he always brings the same game. “He’s aggressive and right in your face and it’s always going to take a couple of bodies to stop him.”
Sam Rapira returned to the NRL last weekend and he’s set to feature again for Manly’s visit to Auckland and Sam Lisone could feature after impressing head coach Andrew McFadden with his form in the New South Wales Cup. Matulino added: “Everyone’s competing for the prop spots. “Sammy [Rapira] came into the team this weekend and I thought he did his job. “We’re going all right and everyone who comes into the team does a job.” Manly arrive in Auckland with reports across the Tasman saying they’ve already released 14 players for next season and they’ll soon be sacking head coach Geoff Toovey. Star Manly halfback Daly Cherry-Evans was forced to leave the field with a shoulder injury in Monday’s defeat to the Cowboys and they’re all the way down in 13th on the NRL ladder. They have to win to keep their slim finals hopes alive and Matulino said the Warriors would not be underestimating the Sea Eagles. “We can’t get too comfortable and think we’ll beat them because we’re on top on points and higher up the table. “That’s the trap for us. “We’ll make that clear and show up to be ready to play.” - NZME

Hammers do us proud in challenge T here would have been many a Mid Canterbury rugby supporter on the edges of their seats on Thursday nights, well, until the 60 minute mark anyway. Our brave lads put up a heroic performance up until that point, and here at the Guardian the special front page we had ready with a very, very big headline was being readied - just in case. But unfortunately the Bay boys dug deep, and more importantly they introduced to the fray the first five who will be wearing black at the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan. Ihaia West changed the game, which at that point was still very much in the balance, with speed and skills that ignited a response from his fellow Magpies, especially Zac Guildford chiming in at pace from the back, and significantly it was
around the same time the Hammers’ linchpin Murray Williams departed the field. The Ranfurly Shield holders went on to score 46 more points, hoisting a half-century that will look bad in the history books, but for anyone watching the game it seems a little unreal that the scoreboard got so out of control. There were the usual number of big ‘ifs’ in the game; if the ref had looked behind him at a couple of rucks in the first half when Mid Canterbury were on attack he could well have given Williams two more opportunities to add easy points for the Hammers (the associate referees must have been looking elsewhere at that time). Williams was again the centre of attention when he was hit well after getting rid of the ball (again the touchies had

other far more important things to look at). It may have been nine points more to the challengers, and the home side short of a player for ten minutes - but it wasn’t, and that’s how the game of rugby pans out sometimes. The Hammers now find themselves in a very similar situation to last year - the experience of playing against a vastly more experienced, more professional, more everything side under their belts as they prepare to make it a hat-trick of Meads Cup victories. Such experience is invalu-
able, especially to the younger members of the squad, some of whom have now played an amazing number of high-level games for young fellas in a minor union. When they go on to bigger and better things, they will hopefully remember the grounding they received in little old Mid Canterbury, a union that punches way above its weight on the rugbt patch. Best recent rugby moment: (and no, it certainly wasn’t standing around freezing in Mayfield in the most atrocious conditions in years): The Baabaas bringing ‘The Wall’ against the Maori. A classic old move, still legal as far as I can tell, and highly entertaining and enjoyable to watch - and devilishly difficult to counter, because the ball can go so many ways. Brilliant!
Dragons in danger A change of scenery might just be what the doctor ordered to get St George Illawarra’s season back on track, says winger Jason Nightingale. After losing six games in a row, the Dragons have slipped outside the top eight and Nightingale believes facing the Melbourne Storm on neutral territory in New Zealand, and their first trip out of NSW since the third round, could rejuvenate their campaign. “Not going down to Melbourne is pretty beneficial and to get away from Sydney is always nice as well,” the Kiwi international said. - AAP
Another year for Lyons Manly captain Jamie Lyon’s future at the Sea Eagles has been guaranteed, but the NRL club remains quiet on coach Geoff Toovey amid reports he’ll be sacked within the week as part of a mass cleanout. The Sea Eagles quickly moved to quash speculation Lyon would be tapped on the shoulder this week, promising the skipper would be a part of their squad for 2016. “Jamie Lyon’s position at our club has never been in question - he will be very much part of our team next season,” CEO Joe Kelly said in a statement. However, Kelly stopped short of offering the same commitment to other players reportedly set to be dumped in the summer, including Luke Burgess, Feleti Mateo, Willie Mason and Justin Horo. - AAP
Shot-clock wanted Cronulla’s Shane Flanagan has joined the chorus of coaches calling for a shotclock to be introduced on NRL video referees. A day after supercoach Wayne Bennett called for the change, Flanagan echoed the idea. In a move designed to make the game more entertaining for fans, the governing body this week announced time restraints would be put on drop-outs and scrums from next year. Flanagan supported the spirit of the rules, but argued more could be done to cut down on time wasting and the men upstairs should have the stopwatch applied to their decision making. - AAP
Eels in salary rort The Parramatta Eels have become embroiled in a new salary cap rort, with claims that off-the-book payments totalling more than $1 million were made to the club’s star players. The Eels are alleged to have circumvented the NRL’s strict salary cap by utilising third-party payments to top up the salaries of Jarryd Hayne, Chris Sandow and Will Hopoate. The Sydney Morning Herald reported that controversial former Eels chairman Roy Spagnolo funneled a number of additional payments into front companies set up for his personal property development deals. - AAP

Maintenance Manager Southern Pastures operate a cluster of seven dairy farms in Mid & Central Canterbury. We are looking for a Maintenance Manager to carry out regular servicing and maintenance on our properties. A typical week for the successful applicant will involve approximately a day on each of the following tasks: • Irrigation checks and minor servicing on all pivots, roto-rainers & sprinklers. • Machinery checks and the scheduling of services on all tractors, generators and motorbikes. • Repairs and maintenance on farm houses, including house inspections and taking care of minor building repairs. • Mowing of lawns and garden maintenance around all cowsheds and the company office. • Other maintenance tasks which will include fencing, farm buildings repairs and effluent system servicing. This is a full-time position and will require a person with good organisational skills, experience with agricultural machinery and effective communication skills. The successful applicant would need to liaise with the Farm Managers, the Cluster Manager and farm contractors.
