The Ashburton District escaped with just minor damage from the southerly blast that hammered much of Canterbury late on Wednesday afternoon. After the district sweltered in temperatures that topped 32°C early in the afternoon, storm clouds rolled in around 7pm and torrential rain and high winds whipped the district for more than an hour. The rough conditions made driving
treacherous as vehicles were battered by flying debris and sheets of rain, but when the storm clouds cleared, apart from windblown debris and some damage to trees, the district escaped unscathed. Firefighters were kept busy for a period of just over an hour. Ashburton, Hinds and Rakaia were all on deck dealing with fallen trees and damaged powerlines. Members of the Ashburton fire unit were first to be called out at 7.06pm, responding to a lifting roof at a Hampstead
address. “Given the wind that we got and the amount of water that fell in the short period of time we were relatively unscathed,” fire chief Alan Burgess said. At 7.34pm, Rakaia were called to reports of a tree that had fallen on to power lines in Chertsey, Rakaia fire chief Tyrone Burrowes said.
