Mid Canterbury schools are finding it harder to hire teachers because big cities are drawing them in. Cities have always been more popular for teachers wanting to find work but over the past few years several Mid Canterbury schools have found that the number of applicants has Chris dropped further. Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president and Methven Primary School principal Chris Murphy said the association had been in discussions with Business Mid Canterbury about ways to

encourage teachers and their partners to the district. Most teachers were the secondary income earners in a family and the primary income earners needed to be able to find jobs too, he said. While there were no set plans in place about what to do to encourage people into the district, discusMurphy sions would be continuing this year, he said. Allenton School principal Graham Smith said in the past few years they have had fewer people applying for positions.

“We used to have a lot more applying. We now select from a pool of 10, we used to be selecting from a pool of 30. “I feel there’s less choice to select from.” Lots of teachers do not want to come to smaller urban places like Ashburton, Gore and Invercargill, Mr Smith said. “All those mid-sized towns are not as attractive as they were.” Hampstead School principal Peter Melrose said while they have not found it too difficult to hire full-time teachers, they did get fewer applicants than they used to.
