Mid Canterbury schools are finding it harder to hire teachers because big cities are drawing them in.

Cities have always been more popular for teachers wanting to find work but over the past few years several Mid Canterbury schools have found that the number of applicants has Chris dropped further.

Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president and Methven Primary School principal Chris Murphy said the association had been in discussions with Business Mid Canterbury about ways to

encourage teachers and their partners to the district.

Most teachers were the secondary income earners in a family and the primary income earners needed to be able to find jobs too, he said.

While there were no set plans in place about what to do to encourage people into the district, discusMurphy sions would be continuing this year, he said.

“We used to have a lot more applying.

We now select from a pool of 10, we used to be selecting from a pool of 30.

“I feel there’s less choice to select from.”

Lots of teachers do not want to come to smaller urban places like Ashburton, Gore and Invercargill, Mr Smith said.

“All those mid-sized towns are not as attractive as they were.”

Hampstead School principal Peter Melrose said while they have not found it too difficult to hire full-time teachers, they did get fewer applicants than they used to.

‘No need for teen parent unit’

Despite a small number of students having children while at secondary school, there is not a high enough demand for a teen parent unit in Mid Canterbury, says the district’s two high school principals.

There are more than 20 teen parent units around the country that enable teen parents to continue their education. Most are usually attached to a regular school.

Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan said while the school occasionally sees teen parents wanting to continue their education, there was not a big enough demand for a unit in the district.

With Wellington with a population of nearly 400,000 and Christchurch with a population of just over 380,800 having just two units each, Mid Canterbury with a population of about 30,000 does not have the need, he said.

“Ashburton probably just isn’t big enough to have enough people to need one all the time.”

However, those occasional students who did end up having a child while at school and wanted to continue their education had options, Mr McMillan said.

Ashburton College would work with the student and their family to encourage them to continue their education.

“We try to make sure there are no barriers at all.

“I’m really proud of what our staff do.”

Students needed family support and needed to have the motivation to continue their education while raising a child and there were some that did not return to school, he

Grant McMillan said. “It’s absolutely critical to have that family support.”

Mount Hutt College principal John Schreurs also does not think there is a need for a teen parent unit.

Mr Schreurs said while it was important to meet the needs of all students at the college, there was not a high enough demand to have a teen parent unit.

“We’re a small community.”

Every student who came back to school after an amount of time off, whether that be after a pregnancy or decided to return from the workforce, was supported on a case-bycase basis, he said.

The school would look at how to best meet their needs and help them adjust back into school.

“It’s really important that they develop some qualifications and confidence in themselves in learning again.

“Part of the job is to build the selfesteem of the students.”

Emergency services were called to the Timaru International Motor Raceway, commonly known as Levels Raceway, about 11.45am on Saturday.

Harris was transported by helicopter to Christchurch Hospital, where he was in a critical condition in intensive care, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The raceway was hosting the New Zealand Superbike Championships at the weekend.

Kiwi woman dies in motorcycle crash in Thailand

A Kiwi woman has lost her life in a tragic motorcycle crash in Thailand just hours after winning her first Muay Thai bout.

Ariana Brown died on Saturday when the bike she was riding in Phuket appeared to have missed a bend in the road.

The mother of two sons in their 20s, from Motueka, had on Friday night won her first Muay Thai fight

Students take lead on stage

Children were able to take the lead during this year’s Summer Theatre School, director Jackie Heffernan says.

The course, which was held last week at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre, allowed children aged 7-17 years to create a piece of theatre from their own ideas.

Mrs Heffernan said the week was a great chance for the children to take the lead and come up with ideas they might not have

had the opportunity to share before, she said.

“We had them in the driving seat.”

It took them a day to realise that the tutors actually meant it when they told the children they were in charge of how the week went. “It was a week of joyous realisation for them.”

The students were taught about different ways to express themselves through theatre, such as dance, puppetry and comedy, to enable them to take charge.

“We’ve never given quite so much ownership to the kids.”

They came up with some “fabulous bits of gold” that they were able to use, she said.

The week ended with a performance for parents on Friday night based on what the children had come up with during their course.

“We have been trying to put together those moments of gold – something that will give the parents the best possible insight into their children.”

Few attend jazz events

An Ashburton musician is disappointed about the lack of people turning up to a new jazz event.

Thank God It’s Friday was held for the second time at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church last Friday as an opportunity for people to hear jazz music.

Renowned jazz clarinet player Jeff Bradley, who performs with his band Delta Swing at the event, said it was being offered as a way to introduce high quality swinging jazz music to the people of Ashburton.

However, he has been disappointed at the small number of people turning up to the events.

Its first night attracted 15 people and last Friday only 10 people turned up, he said.

“I’m really disappointed that people don’t bother to turn up.

“It’s a chance to hear jazz how it should be played.”

Mr Bradley moved to Mid Canterbury from Christchurch following the February 2011 earthquake.

He has toured New Zealand and Australia a number of times and has supported well-known musicians including Archer Bilk and Kenny Ball.

The event will be held every fortnight until March for a gold coin donation, with the next being held on February 5.

Teen dies after fleeing police A 16-year-old girl has died after crashing the apparently stolen car she was driving into another vehicle while fleeing police.

The crash also put her passenger, a girl aged 15, in hospital with serious injuries. Neither were believed to have been wearing seatbelts.

A police statement said the pursuit of the car had stopped at the time of the accident, which happened in Mangere yesterday.

“The pursuing officer lost sight of the stolen vehicle and came across it when it had crashed into an oncoming vehicle on Buckland Road.”

The pursuit followed a police call to Hill Road in Papatoetoe about 3.30am after reports of

someone breaking into a car.

Police got to Hill Road four minutes later, just as the alleged stolen vehicle drove off, according to the statement.

“Police signalled for the vehicle to pull over but the driver failed to do so and fled from police.”

The statement said the police chase lasted about four minutes around the streets of Papatoetoe and Mangere.

A police spokeswoman said: “We do not believe seatbelts were worn by either of the occupants.

This is a tragedy for the families involved and our thoughts are with them at this time.

“These incidents are also devastating for our staff and it is the last thing our officers go to work

for. This once again demonstrates the tragic consequences which can happen if a driver chooses not to stop for police.”

The Independent Police Conduct Authority is investigating, as it does any police pursuit which ends in tragedy.

A Buckland Road resident, who lives just past the Wickman Way intersection, was sitting on her deck with family when she saw a car speed past their property about 3.45am.

“It was going really fast down the middle of the road; over 100km/h, maybe even over 120km/h. It was really loud; revving lots like a car does when it’s really going. We jumped up and saw it cross over the centre

lane and crash into a vehicle that was coming from the other way.

There was a loud bang.”

The speeding vehicle then spun about and crashed into a fence, she said.

“My partner ran over to that car and I ran over to the guy in the car. He was a Tongan guy, around his 40s, who lives around here.

He was driving home from Onehunga. He said there was nothing he could do; he couldn’t get out of the way in time.”

The police car, which was pursuing the speeding vehicle, arrived moments after the crash, she said. “Then heaps [of police] came and everyone came out of their houses to see what happened.”

Dalton breaks wrist Team New Zealand chief executive Grant Dalton has suffered a broken wrist in a motorbike accident, a report says. Dalton is understood to have crashed on Saturday while competing in a qualifying race for the 23rd International Island Classic at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit in Victoria, Australia.

According to the report of the race - which was delayed because of heavy rain - by Motorcycle News. com.au Dalton crashed 15 minutes into the session. After Dalton’s crash, four more riders slipped in the slick and the race was cancelled.

Pedestrian hit by car A pedestrian is in a serious condition after being hit by a car in Henderson in west Auckland yesterday. The man is in his 20s, and has been left with serious injuries after the incident on Don Buck Road just before 3pm. Police and ambulance were called to the scene.

Vicious attack A video has been posted to Facebook showing what appears to be a vicious group attack by teenage boys on another boy at a popular New Zealand holiday spot.

The video, reportedly filmed in Whangamata and posted online on Saturday afternoon, shows three boys attacking the victim, who also appears to be a teenager. It is understood the police have been informed, but the NZ Herald has been unable to reach the police to verify exactly where or when it was filmed.

The video starts by showing one teen holding the victim while another punches him, knocking him to ground. While he is on the ground, a third teen kicks him in the head.

The victim is then picked up by his clothes and dragged a short distance before being thrown on to the ground. He is seen cowering as the other teens approach him and threaten to hit him. They then turn and walk off.

The video has had more than 260,000 views on Facebook since it was posted.

A man in his 30s and a boy in his young teens were rescued from two near-drownings in the Auckland region yesterday. The older man was rescued at Piha and the young teen from Te Arai Point near Wellsford. A St John spokesman said the ambulance service was alerted to the incident at Piha at 3.18pm. “The incident is a male aged in his 30s who was injured in a near-drowning, he is in a serious condition.” St John was alerted to the Te Arai Point accident at 3.32pm and the Fire Service was sent as first response.

Alleged robbery Rotorua police are looking for two masked men - one who could be armed - who allegedly robbed Mo’s Bar and Casino in Tutanekai St in front of startled onlookers yesterday. The brazen daylight robbery happened around 1.15pm at the bar and gaming venue in front of a number of restaurants, including Nando’s and The Thai Restaurant, in Tutanekai Street between Arawa and Pukaki Streets, where people were enjoying lunch. Rotorua Senior Sergeant Mike Membury said initial calls were received by bar staff and a member of the public who witnessed the incident. Mr Membury said police were still looking for the men who left the scene in a green car. He said police were checking CCTV of the area.

Missing teen’s body found

The parents of the Mt Maunganui teenager who drowned after being swept off rocks have paid tribute to those who found his body.

A member of the public noticed Hamish Rieger’s body floating near where he was last seen at Leisure Island, at Mt Maunganui, about 11am yesterday.

The 17-year-old was a member of the Mt Maunganui Lifeguard Service and is the son of Greg Rieger, who has clocked up four decades with the club.

Hamish was with two of his friends when a massive wave hit

them as they sat on rocks near the blowhole at about 7pm on Saturday. He was pulled out to sea, while the other two managed to stay on the rocks.

Hamish’s parents, Greg and Donna, yesterday thanked police and searchers.

“We really appreciate the efforts of our surf lifesaving friends, the police and everyone involved for bringing our son back to us,” they said.

“Getting him back means a huge amount to us; now we’d respectfully request space so we can concentrate on supporting

each other through this time.” Mt Maunganui Lifeguard Servicepresident Brent Warner said the club has pulled together and younger club members were being supported.

“The Rieger family is hugely involved in our club and Hamish was a talented young lifeguard in his own right, who was on patrol earlier in the day,” Mr Warner said.

“This is an extremely traumatic time for all club members, but doing all we possibly can to look after one of our lifeguarding families.”

The Mt Manganui Lifeguard Service has paid tribute to Hamish on Facebook, writing “it’s with aching, weeping hearts we farewell one of our members, Hamish Rieger, who was swept off rocks on Moturiki Island”.

Inspector Karl Wright-St Clair, acting area commander for Western Bay police, said Hamish and his family have contributed a great deal to the community through their service to Surf Lifesaving.

“Our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time.”

Toy library still popular

The Ashburton Toy Library is becoming increasingly popular as people adopt a more sustainable lifestyle, president Jane Fowles says.

Families are able to hire toys for two weeks every Thursday and Saturday morning from 9.30am to 12.30pm at the Methodist Church on Baring Square East.

Mrs Fowles said they have between 110 and 140 members at any one time and it is becoming increasingly popular because of the interest in sustainability.

Children get a taste of the toys without having to buy them, there is less waste and it is cheaper, she said.

Also many toddlers would often become tired of a toy after a few weeks so it made sense to hire from the library.

“It’s a really great way of reducing your footprint.”

The toy library has been running for 22 years and will be having an open day on February 20 during their usual session.

Sir Richie McCaw is used to carrying the weight of a nation on his shoulders, so a mountain bike is likely light in comparison.

The former All Black captain was among about 100 multisport athletes who took part in a 43km race around Lake Wanaka yesterday - an event taking in running, biking, kayaking and abseiling.

Sir Richie completed the initial mountain bike stage as part of his training for the GodZone Adventure Race, to be held in Tasman in April. The first day of a two-day event saw the elite field led by Daniel Jones of Whakatane and Alex Hunt of Tasman.

Saturday’s stages, competed by both amateur and professional athletes, included a 43km/1200m elevation mountain bike ride through Minaret Station and a 9km 490m elevation off-road run over Rocky Mountain in which there was an abseil section.

Sir Richie is competing in the April adventure race which runs up to seven days, as one of the Cure Kids team alongside New Zealand Rugby Players’ Association CEO Rob Nichol, Wanaka adventure racer Sarah Fairmaid and former Blues player Ben Meyer.

One person has died, another is seriously ill and a third has minor injuries after a water emergency at Hot Water Beach on the Coromandel Peninsula.

Emergency services were called to Hot Water Beach at about 5.30pm yesterday. A middle-aged man was given CPR on the beach by first responders but could not be saved. He died at the scene.

Two people were taken to Thames Hospital by ambulance, one in a serious condition. Police will be investigating the death on behalf of the coroner.

Hula hooping fun in Ashburton

Yesterday’s session at the EA Networks Centre was a great success with 12 people attending the first hour and 10 the second.

“It was brilliant, absolutely fantastic. They all enjoyed it,” Mrs Smith said.

Everyone who came along to the Mid Canterbury workshops so far had really embraced hula hooping as a way to exercise.

It is a great way to tone muscles, build up the core, better people’s balance and is also incredibly fun, Mrs Smith said.

Ashburton residents had the chance to learn how to hula hoop at a workshop yesterday.

Two sessions were run at the EA Networks Centre by Bernadette Smith aka “The Hoop Lady” of In2Hula in Christchurch.

Mrs Smith said after running In2Hula for eight years she decided, along with her husband, to do a year-long road trip taking hula hooping as fitness around the country.

Politicians have been welcomed onto Ratana Pa and while there was little sign of the anti Trans-Pacific Partnership protesters some expected, there was reference to the controversial trade agreement inside the pa.

Security was higher than in the past with more police present and Maori wardens forming a cordon to stop people crossing over to the politicians’ tent. However, the organisers had made it clear beforehand that protest at the peaceful hui was not part of the protocol and there was little sign of discontent, beyond a peaceful group outside the gates.

Another speaker said he hoped the mana of the nation would be retained when the agreement was signed on February 4.

“We can only talk to each other if we know what is being talked about.”

He called for cross-party alignment on the issue.

Speaking before going on to the marae, Labour leader Andrew Little said the timing of the signing of the TPP on February 4 was “arrogant provocation”.

He said that was just two days before Waitangi Day, a day that marked New Zealand sovereignty.

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters also questioned the need for the signing, given uncertainty about its future in the United States.

Blizzard strands thousands A blizzard with hurricane-force winds brought much of the US East Coast to a standstill yesterday, dumping as much as 90cm of snow, stranding tens of thousands of travellers and shutting down Washington and New York City.

After days of weather warnings, most of the 80 million people in the storm’s path heeded requests to stay home and off the roads, which were largely deserted. Yet at least 18 deaths were blamed on the weather, resulting from car crashes, shovelling snow and hypothermia. And more snow was to come, with dangerous conditions expected to persist until early today, forecasters warned.

“This is going to be one of those generational events, where your parents talk about how bad it was,” Ryan Maue, a meteorologist for WeatherBell Analytics, said from Tallahassee, Florida, which also got some flakes.

The system was mammoth, dropping snow from the Gulf Coast to the northeastern New England states.

Airlines cancelled nearly 7000 weekend flights.

“This is kind of a Top 10 snowstorm,” said weather service winter storm expert Paul Kocin, who co-wrote a two-volume textbook on blizzards.

It was Top 3 in New York City, where more than 62.5cm of snow fell, close to the record, (68.3cm), set in February 2006.

Three people died while shovelling snow. The normally bustling streets around Rockefeller Center, Penn Station and other landmarks were mostly empty.

Those who did venture out walked down the middle of snow-covered streets to avoid even deeper drifts on the sidewalks.

Officials imposed a travel ban in the city, ordering all nonemergency vehicles off the roads. Commuter rails and aboveground segments of the nation’s biggest subway system shut down, too, along with buses.

An Aston Martin DB10 created for the latest James Bond film Spectre is set to fetch more than $2.15 million at auction in February.

The luxury vehicle was one of 10 designed

by Aston Martin for the spy film, but was never used in the action sequences, as it was kept back as a display car for the London premiere at the Royal Albert Hall in October.

The car, the only DB10 to be released for public sale, includes a special plaque signed by 007 actor Daniel Craig. In Kentucky, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, drivers were marooned for hours in snow-choked highways.

The Temple University women’s gymnastics team, the Duquesne University’s men’s basketball team and a church group from Indiana were among travelers who got stuck when the Pennsylvania Turnpike turned into a snowy parking lot.

Roofs collapsed on a historic theatre in Virginia and a horse barn in Maryland, while some seaside towns grappled with flooding.

Teen charged with murder after mass school shooting

Villagers find piece of MH370

A 17-year-old is facing four counts of first-degree murder following a mass shooting in an indigenous community in northern Canada.

The teen, whose identity cannot be revealed under Canada’s youth justice system, is also facing seven counts of attempted murder and one count of unauthorised possession of a firearm, officials with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said.

The shooting rampage in La Loche, in northern Saskatchewan, could be one of the worst school shootings in Canadian history, RCMP Superintendent Grant St Germaine told reporters. “The days and weeks are going to be difficult as we come to terms with the impact of what has happened in our community,” St Germaine said.

“It’s a sad and difficult time and no words will take away the pain and sorrow of what has happened.”

The victims have been identified as two teachers, Marie Janvier, 21, and Adam Wood, 35, and brothers Dayne and Drayden Fontaine, aged 17 and 13 respectively.

The worst school shooting in Canadian history happened on December 6, 1989 in Montreal’s Ecole Polytechnique engineering school, where a gunman killed 14 female students and a university employee, and injured another 13 women, before taking his own life.

A piece of suspected plane wreckage has been found off the coast of southern Thailand, prompting speculation it might belong to Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, which vanished nearly two years ago.

A large piece of curved metal washed ashore in Nakhon Si Thammarat province, where villagers reported it to the authorities to help identify it, Tanyapat Patthikongpan, head of Pak Phanang district, told Reuters on Saturday.

“Villagers found the wreckage, measuring about 2 metres wide and 3 metres long,” he said.

The find has fuelled speculation in the Thai media that the debris could belong to MH370, which disappeared with 239 people on board during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in March 2014.

There has been no official confirmation that the wreckage belongs to a plane.

Finding an alternative to student debt Sue Newman

T

he decision thousands of Kiwis made to head overseas and leave their student loan behind is now coming back to haunt them.

While many will have repaid that debt, for some the gap of time and distance may have meant their loan became a forgotten liability. But not by the Inland Revenue Department.

Cook Islands maths teacher Ngatokotoru Puna owed $22,000 on his unpaid student loan.

He drew the unlucky marble, became the IRD’s test case of its power of arrest given in the 2013 budget and was detained at Auckland Airport.

The loan repayment issue is a complex one, particularly if you’re living and working overseas. Yes, if the money is borrowed it should be paid back but it’s easy to see how student debt can become something that’s easier to ignore than to deal with.

Often living and working overseas is a graduate’s best option for a few years and many of those who go intend to return home in the future to become tax payers at a level that would see their student loan repaid many times over very quickly.

There has to be a better way to recoup this outstanding debt; arresting returnees is not the solution. All that will do is keep many of our highly educated young people away, ensuring their skills and high earning (and tax paying) power, benefits some other economy.

It seems unfair that young people seeking qualifications so they can work in jobs that benefit New Zealand, emerge from the education system with a yoke of often quite massive debt around their necks.

Perhaps the solution to the student loan problem can be found in going back to the start, finding a better way of funding tertiary education.

As a country we’re prepared to pay people who are not working a living wage; why aren’t we prepared to fund the education of young people who are striving to make something of their lives?

A scheme where the first year of study was funded but from there on, funding was based on performance would weed out the time wasters and reward the committed. It would make tertiary study something one aspired to rather than something that some turn to as an easy option.

mproving access to international markets is a key component of the Government’s plan to create a stronger economy, with more jobs and higher incomes for New Zealanders.

Last year the Government signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Korea which will give local exporters better access to the Korean market of 50 million people.

Korea is the world’s 13th largest economy and it is New Zealand’s sixth largest export destination for goods and services. In the year ended June 2015, New Zealand exported more than $2 billion in goods and services to Korea, and imported a similar amount from Korea.

New Zealand exports to Korea currently attract $229 million a year in duties.

Under the FTA, tariffs will be progressively eliminated on 98 per cent of New Zealand’s current exports, which will save New Zealand exporters an estimated $65 million in duties this year alone.

The first two rounds of tariff cuts have already come into effect – the first was on December 20 last year and the second on January 1 this year.

Duties on New Zealand’s current exports will largely be eliminated within 15 years. This will make New Zealand products more competitive with products from other countries that already have preferential tariff access into Korea, including the United States, Chile, Canada, Australia, and the European Union. With this barrier removed, our exporters will have the opportunity to increase the volume of sales to Korea.

New Zealand export industries set to benefit from the FTA include: Dairy – Our dairy products are highly valued in Korea with NZ$220 million worth of dairy products exported there in the year ended June 2015. Korea is the fourth largest export market for New Zealand cheese. Tariffs range from 36 per cent on cheese to 89 per cent on butter and 176

cars, electronic goods and machinery. Through the FTA, New Zealand consumers can expect better access to Korean goods such as motor homes, transport vehicles, heavy machinery and home appliances.

The FTA also reflects a strengthening of our economic and political ties with Korea that stretch back to the Korean War and will enable New Zealand to have an even closer relationship with Korea in the future.

The drive to Mendocino County and the wine-growing area of Anderson Valley north of San Francisco is lined with stunning cliffs and the pounding Pacific Ocean.

The wine road less travelled S

ixty years after Hollywood actor James Dean discovered Mendocino County, the cool wine region north of San Francisco remains a half-hidden gem.

While busloads of tourists choke the highways to the more famous Californian wine areas of Napa and Sonoma, the route to Mendocino County remains a road least travelled.

And what a road.

Two hours north of San Francisco along the famous coasthugging highway one, the drive to Mendocino County and the wine-growing area of Anderson Valley is lined with giant redwood trees, stunning cliffs and the pounding Pacific Ocean.

The area is quietly famous for its pinot noir, pristine produce and ruggedly stunning scenery.

James Dean took up residence there in 1955 when Mendocino was the headquarters and casting office for his Oscar-winning movie East of Eden.

Strolling through the quaint Mendocino village it seems that little has changed since the days of Dean.

Mendocino County has remained a hidden gem. Mike Osborne decided to hit the trail to try and find out why this cool wine region has not gained in popularity over the years.

The must-see and do’s in Mendocino County and Anderson Valley.

TASTE There are about 30 wineries in Anderson Valley so if time is short Goldeneye, Navarro and Roederer Estate are the musts as you drive from south to north.

Navarro is one of the oldest wineries in the valley and its Zinfandel is a taste sensation. The winery’s picnic tables set among the trees and lawn beckon as the perfect spot for a relaxing rest and refuel.

Golden Eye’s food and wine pairings are a fabulous way to taste a variety of local wine and produce without overindulging.

Go for an amble through the vineyard afterwards to get some beautiful landscape pictures.

Also stunning is Roederers setting, chosen by French firm

Champagne Louis Roederer for its California sparkling wine facility.

Anderson Valley has proved ideal for growing the chardonnay and pinot noir grapes needed for sparkling wine cuvees, which are very close to the real thing from a French champagne house.

REST It’s hard to go past the sweeping Pacific views at the grand clifftop Heritage House luxury hotel, the setting for the awardwinning 1978 movie Same Time Next Year starring Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn.

The great views and service are also on tap at the Heritage restaurant, which does hearty breakfasts and indulgent dinners.

around a common courtyard.

Named after a local native tree, the Madrones has five rooms and a cottage, four tasting rooms featuring Bink, Drew, Knez and Signal Ridge wines and a woodfired pizza restaurant called Stone and Embers.

FEAST Anderson Valley is known for its artisan-farmstead cheeses that can be enjoyed on a picnic rug under mighty oak and redwood trees.

Pick up some Pennyroyal farm cheese and other picnic produce at Boonville or at the Harvest Market in Mendocino village.

For more formal dining have a leisurely lunch or dinner at the Little River Inn where James Dean was in residence 60 years ago. Order the delicious local salmon and the steamers (clams).

Bergman battered Joseph Parker’s right elbow problem returned during his victory over Jason Bergman in Samoa on Saturday night, an injury which hampered him early in the fight and which makes his impending break even more important.

It is understood that Parker’s corner immediately saw the result of the hyper-extension in the second round of the fight which the undefeated New Zealand heavyweight finished in the eighth, and it was confirmed by their fighter after the round.

It is a flare-up of an injury suffered during an intense fourweek camp ahead of this fight, his sixth in 10 months.

The schedule is taking its toll but Parker will now enjoy a holiday in Samoa and New Zealand before he returns to Las Vegas to prepare for his next fight in Christchurch on April 17.

The Parker camp didn’t talk about the injury afterwards.

They were wary of making excuses after a slightly flat performance from their man, but Parker later revealed it was an issue.

There was a feeling of satisfaction afterwards, but also one of frustration.

Parker, fighting in Samoa for the first time, was eager to finish it early in front of more than

2000 people at the Faleata sports complex on the outskirts of Apia.

The spectacular knockout didn’t come, despite Parker putting Bergman down in the second round with a left hook to the head and in the seventh with a left to the body.

It was a dominant performance - Bergman admitted Parker won every round - but the TKO in the eighth round was a more a result of attrition than anything else.

“I was a little slack with the jab a few times ... but again, I got a little too close and didn’t give myself enough space to throw the punches to ... do the damage,” a sweatsoaked Parker said afterwards.

“I probably started on the body a bit late.”

Trainer Kevin Barry said: “He did get a little frustrated and that’s part of the learning curve, it’s something that we’re going to have to work on - to stay composed and not get frustrated during longer fights.

“He’s had some great knockouts and he wanted to have a spectacular knockout in Samoa and he probably tried a little too hard.”

Parker was caught with

a left-hand lead by American southpaw Bergman in the first round, a shot that seemed to surprise the 24-year-old Kiwi.

The counter-punch was followed with a taunt from the tough 31-year-old from Pittsburgh, an indication of his defiance which kept him in the fight for longer than many expected.

Parker said: “He said ‘you’re a big guy with good speed but you’re not hurting’. When I got back to the corner Kev said ‘don’t worry about what he’s saying, get back with the plan’.”

In the end Bergman just

couldn’t sustain the battering.

There was no disappointment on his face when the referee called it off and his bruised and swollen face told its own story.

“I couldn’t believe how durable he was,” Barry said.

“He came to survive, he had those blinkers up constantly.

“He knew that Joe was a powerful guy but I was really surprised that he lasted the time that he did, especially with the body shots that he absorbed.”

Bergman was reluctant to compare Parker with WBC champion Deontay Wilder, with whom he has been sparring, but said: “He’s a strong hitter, he throws good combinations, but I honestly believe he’s got a bit more development [to do] yet.

“I give Joseph credit, he’s got a good chin. I caught him with a good shot and everyone saw that he felt it.”

Duco promoter David Higgins, who travelled to Samoa six times in 12 months in preparation for the event, said he had approached the week with “trepidation” in terms of the financial result, but added: “We’re certainly not going to get rich out of it but it’s been more successful than we had anticipated.”

Playoff chances drifting away for Breakers The New Zealand Breakers’ playoff hopes are hanging by a thread after a 90-87 defeat to the Cairns Taipans on Saturday night.

Five straight losses had bombed the four-time champions out of the top four, and their slump stretched to six after losing in the final seconds to a valiant Taipans side.

The loss is devastating for the Breakers, as the defeat sees them slip to three games back in the loss column with only five games remaining.

The 11-12 record is now well behind the 13-9 mark of the Adelaide 36ers, who have won six straight and show no signs of slowing down.

Additionally, they hold a 2-1 advantage in the head-to-head series with the Breakers, and a +15 point differential with one clash left between the two sides.

It was an improved performance by the Breakers in the confines of Cairns, making a far superior beginning to the game after a sloppy opening quarter in Townsville on Thursday.

With centre Alex Pledger inserted into the starting lineup over foulprone import Charles Jackson, the Breakers jumped out to a 20-7 lead.

Alert on defence, the visitors were aided by some inept Cairns offence early on, with only a Torrey Craig turnaround halfcourt buzzer beater keeping the Taipans in touch.

However, the Breakers’ freethrow shooting remained abysmal, going at a 43 per cent clip (13/30) compared to Cairns’ 77 per cent success rate.

In a scrappy game littered with fouls, the Taipans found contributions from bench players Cameron Tragadh and Shaun Bruce, while Markel Starks poured in 19.

However, the Taipans bigs weren’t up to standard on interior defence, as the Breakers’ players dominated inside.

Pledger, Mika Vukona, Abercrombie and the Jackson duo combined to shoot 72 per cent from inside the arc as the Breakers shot 59 per cent on two-pointers, but that advantage didn’t outweigh the horrors at the stripe.

Just as they started strongly in the first quarter, the beginning of the final period also proved prolific for the Breakers, as Cedric Jackson and Abercrombie both buried threes to stretch a four point lead at the break out to a double digit advantage.

Cairns came back into the contest through some long-range bombing of their own, and Craig hit two clutch free-throws with just eight seconds to go to give them a one-point lead.

That left the Breakers needing a game-winning shot, but the Taipans stole the ball and with it, the game.

“There was a cricket ball in a sock in the carport,” Kane Williamson says.

“I had a bat, a stump and my Grandad’s golf shaft with the head snapped off.

“I was at primary school, a time when you can play games against yourself, with different variations to keep it interesting. You’re just loving the game.”

Was there commentary?

“No, it was more about playing.”

Therein lies a home truth.

Even last century, Kane Williamson was more interested in doing, rather than conjuring up any theatre about his actions.

Like most cricket fans, he had his favourite players but he emulated rather than idolised them in the backyard.

There’s an important difference. Once you idolise, you dilute the capacity to be yourself.

“I always loved watching [Sachin] Tendulkar, [Ricky] Ponting and [Jacques] Kallis, New Zealand’s interim captain says.

“It wasn’t about modelling [my game on them] so much. They’re just players you like. Everyone’s different, and you’ve got to learn to do things your own way.

“In fact, making the transition to being a test player can be an odd thing.

“I remember my debut [at Ahmedabad] playing against Tendulkar, [Rahul] Dravid, [VVS] Laxman and [Virender] Sehwag.

“These were ‘the masters’ I wanted to watch growing up.

“Playing them was some-

thing where you thought, ‘wow’ and suddenly you’re competing against them, but it was enjoyable.”

“I try to look at things logically. I look at threats and practise against them.

“With technique, 90 per cent of the time you are changing things for the sake of it.

“There’s no real benefit to that, because even during an innings things change and you’re also coming up against different conditions and teams.

“Naturally, you see things people do and consider them.

“Everyone is impressionable in some way but, ultimately, it’s about improving your game as best you can and exploring ideas from other people.

“That can be a positive thing, but you’ve got to stick to your strengths.”

Williamson is embarking on an extraordinary cricketing career, by world rather than New Zealand standards.

His statistics are well-documented, so let’s avoid those and

concentrate on the man generating them.

That man’s acute modesty is what resonates most with the Kiwi public.

The more self-effacing he becomes, the more he is respected for being himself.

On a superficial level, it might be assumed such an outer layer of introversion mightn’t lend itself to leadership, especially given incumbent skipper Brendon McCullum’s chutzpah.

Williamson, for instance, would not want to be described as anything other than ‘interim captain’.

He will not accept the job is his by way of entitlement once McCullum retires.

And that, surely, is a compelling reason why it should be his.

Complacency can’t find a space to squat on his shoulders as he contemplates the legacy the current team must leave for New Zealanders.

“It’s still an interim job,” he says.

“I’m respectful of Brendon tak-

ing time off, so I’m not looking beyond that. “[His retirement] is not a real thing yet and, with anything I do, I don’t look too far ahead. I’m just looking forward to having Brendon back.

“As a player and captain, he’s brilliant.

“The obligation in a position of leadership is to move the team forward and add value, basically building on what Brendon and Hess [coach Mike Hesson] have done so well in the last few years.”

That means connecting with fans.

After the T20 victory over Sri Lanka at Eden Park, Williamson and Colin Munro were spotted signing autographs on the boundary rope 45 minutes after the winning runs had been hit.

There was a time, not so long ago, when that would have been rare.

“When I started, it didn’t happen as much as it perhaps should have, but it’s now part of the values we want to hold dear,” Williamson says.

“It comes down to how we conduct ourselves.

“We want to be engaging with the public. One way is to go out and sign autographs, take the odd photo, and maintain those relationships as normal Kiwis.

“Many kids want autographs from New Zealand sports teams.

That was certainly the case for me.

“I suppose when people want your autograph you think, ‘that’s a bit odd’ but you put it into perspective and make the effort because it makes a difference.”

Kane Williamson is 25 years old. Just imagine the wisdom he’s going to possess by the time he’s 30.

Cricket fans should be paying homage to Grandad’s broken golf shaft.

Black Caps ease to series victory over Pakistan New Zealand ushered themselves into World T20 contention on Saturday night at Westpac Stadium with a comprehensive victory against world-class Pakistan.

A ground record total and a fielding vice saw the hosts triumph by 95 runs in the final T20 international, giving them the series 2-1 and taking them to fifth in the world rankings.

The Black Caps built seismic pressure, first with a total of 196 for five, and next by reducing the visitors to 15 for three after 2.3 overs.

The score eclipsed the previous best at the venue by 33 runs, made against the West Indies two years ago.

New Zealand also bucked a trend.

Five of the previous six T20Is at the venue had been won by the chasing team.

Corey Anderson and Grant Elliott, the opening partnership of Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson, and Adam Milne’s pace in excess of 145km/h to gather 3-8 from 3.1 overs were highlights.

Man-of-the-match Anderson was the batting pivot with 82 off 42 balls, his highest T20I score.

Post injury he still has the capability to dispatch at will.

He backed up by opening the bowling, taking two for 17 from three overs before exiting with cramp.

It was ideal he spent quality time batting and bowling.

He won’t get another opportunity in this format before March’s global tournament in India, and justified his elevation to No.4.

Elsewhere, Ross Taylor retired hurt for six off four balls with a left side strain and took no further part in the match.

The upside was that Elliott

compiled 19 off 14 to get welcome exposure.

His innings included a prototype stance on the bowling crease about 30cm outside off stump, reminiscent of the technique he used when Dale Steyn approached with the penultimate ball of the World Cup semi-final.

Figures of 3-7 from two overs, perfecting his slower ball, added to his CV. The hosts seized the initiative through openers Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson who posted 57 from six overs.

Pakistan used five of their six bowlers in that period, as they endured a Guptill clobbering in which he made 42 off 19 balls.

He looked in a state of batting zen from the first ball, threaded between cover and point off the front foot.

Guptill eventually hit against Shahid Afridi’s spin with a slog

sweep which saw Umar Akmal advance from long-on to take the catch.

Williamson’s late cut worked well and he fed Guptill the strike.

The partnership looks the perfect balance; Guptill has taken the aggressor duties in Brendon McCullum’s absence, and Williamson has never had a problem containing his ego.

Afridi was the best of the Pakistani bowlers, taking one for 27 from his allotment in what’s expected to be the 35-year-old’s final appearance in New Zealand.

He broke the opening stand and was the only bowler to concede less than eight runs per over.

Shoaib Malik and Sarfraz Ahmed had moments of brilliance blasting through point but it could not be sustained as the required run rate accelerated to more than two runs a ball by the end of the ninth over.

Rehab for Taylor Ross Taylor has been ruled out of the Pakistan and Australia one-day international series after suffering an oblique left side strain batting in New Zealand’s final Twenty20 match. He will leave the squad to begin rehabilitation and monitoring after an MRI scan revealed the damage. Wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi, who has suffered a poor run of batting form in the past year, will play the opening ODI. Test wicketkeeper BJ Watling is recalled for the last two. Chanderpaul retires Veteran West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the seventh highest Test match run maker in history, announced his international retirement yesterday, 22 years after his debut. The 41-year-old former captain from Guyana ends his Test career on 11,867 runs, just 86 short of the West Indies all-time record held by Brian Lara. Chanderpaul, a gritty and stubborn left-hander, made his debut against England in March 1994, hitting a half-century as the West Indies won by an innings and 44 runs.

‘Issues’ resolved Pakistan captain Azhar Ali claims to have resolved his issues with convicted spot-fixer Mohammad Amir and aims to “get the best out of him” if the left-armer comes under his leadership in the opening one-day international against New Zealand at the Basin Reserve.

Ali tendered his resignation as captain when it became clear that Amir would be re-admitted to the side for this limited overs series. The 30-year-old took over as one-day skipper in April after Misbah-ul-Haq retired from limited overs cricket after the World Cup last year.

Sir Ronnie Flanagan emphatically denied an agreement was made not to follow up on McCullum’s alleged nonreporting of an improper approach from former New Zealand allrounder Chris Cairns in 2008 regarding spot-fixing. Allenton bats hit form

The final week of Pritchard Shield senior cricket produced two upsets as Coldstream took a six wicket win over Lauriston and Allenton dealt newly-crowned champions Tech a 201 run loss.

Lauriston won the toss and elected to bat, a decision they will no doubt regret after posting a meagre 56 all out.

Michael Gilbert (15) was the only Lauriston player to muster double figures in a forgettable innings, while Jay Houston played

the role of chief destroyer for Coldstream.

Houston took an exceptional five for 19 of 7.1 overs in a ruthless bowling display that Lauriston had no answers for.

Coldstream chased down Lauriston’s paltry total in the 12th over with a loss of four wickets.

Houston (15) was Coldstream’s best with the bat and Gilbert (one for five off three) was Lauriston’s most economical with the ball.

In the round’s opposite fixture, Allenton won the toss and sent Tech in to the field.

The decision proved a good one as Allenton batted out the allotted 45 overs to record 263 for six.

Jeff Naish marked his 150th appearance for the home side by top-scoring with 91 in a fine individual display, while Jack Meyrick (46) and Lyall Jemmett (38) also produced solid performances.

Of the Tech bowlers, Morgan Gallagher had the most joy, taking two for 34 off four overs.

Tech’s unimpressive reply of 62 all out in the 16th over was not

indicative of a title-winning team as Allenton took a deserved 201 run victory.

Jack Dudley and Shaun Strange produced excellent performances with the ball, taking four for 14 off six and three for 14 off three overs respectively.

Following the final day of play, Tech finished at the top of the Pritchard Shield ladder on 16 points, while Allenton increased their Studholme Shield stock by moving up to second place on 11 with Lauriston followed by Coldstream and Methven.

Innings loss as Mid Canterbury fails to fire

Mid Canterbury’s Hawke Cup challenge hopes were dashed in an innings and 62 run loss to Southern Zone frontrunners North Otago at the Ashburton Domain oval yesterday.

North Otago were strong favourites having notched outright wins over Otago Country and Southland before recording a first innings victory over South Canterbury in Oamaru a fortnight ago.

Mid Canterbury won the toss and sent the visitors in to bat on Saturday, which would have appeared a good decision as openers Duncan Drew (4) and Lachie Kingan (0) failed to fire, but Ben Cant soon steadied the ship. Cant posted 146 before eventually being removed lbw by Ryan Cockburn, but the damage had already been done.

Jeremy Smith (71), whose brother Nathan is currently representing New Zealand under-19 in Bangladesh, produced

another fine performance, with North Otago all out for 323 in 94.5 overs.

Captain Bevan Ravenscroft was the most economical of the Mid Canterbury bowlers, taking two for 17 off his 7.1 overs in an attack that lacked venom.

In reply, Mid Canterbury could only muster 72 all out in 34.3 overs.

With a 251 run lead, the visitors sent Mid Canterbury back in to bat.

James Southby recorded 36 while Gallagher (20) and Houston (23) also produced improved performances before Kruger posted a fine 58.

Middlemen Matt Tait (25) and Will Southby (22) contributed well, but they were the last scores of note as Mid Canterbury limped to 190 for nine with skipper Ravenscroft retiring hurt.

A composed century from a current Black Caps opener has been eclipsed by a brutal century from a former Black Caps opener in an astonishing Ford Trophy semifinal showdown.

Tom Latham looked like he had sent Canterbury through to the one-day final with a sedate and elegant 126 from 135 balls, but Jesse Ryder’s belligerent 136 from 114 balls gave Central Districts a remarkable triumph.

Chasing 295 for victory, Central looked dead and buried at 105-6, but a sensational record partnership of 163 from 126 balls between Ryder and Ben Wheeler turned the tables in phenomenal fashion. Ryder laid waste to the Canterbury bowling attack in his traditional stand-and-deliver style, blasting 13 fours and seven sixes in a career-best one-day knock.

He feasted upon Todd Astle in particular, blasting the Black Caps leggie all over Hagley Oval.

Astle aided his cause with some woeful full-tosses as he went for 84 from his 10 overs, the majority coming from the bat of Ryder.

Wheeler was Ryder’s trusty foil throughout, also reaching a career-best with an unbeaten 80 from 77 balls, and hitting the winning runs with three balls and two wickets remaining.

Canterbury will be ruing not giving Latham more support, with nobody else managing to pass 33 in an innings which required some big hitting around Latham’s anchoring knock.

Central now have hosting rights for the final, but who they will play is yet to be determined, with top qualifiers Canterbury getting a second chance against Otago, after they swept aside Auckland in the minor semi-final.

Auckland - 10 time winners of the competition - were never in the contest against an Otago team which has started to get excellent contributions from their classy top order.

After winning the toss and deciding to bat, Otago continued their recent run-scoring barrage, making an unbeatable 312-7 on the Queen’s Park wicket. - NZME

Shield winners Mid Canterbury retained the Browning Shield for a third successive year yesterday at the at the Lincoln and Prebbleton tennis courts.

Mid Canterbury have now won the shield 18 times, surpassing Ellesmere on 17, but are still behind the tournament’s most successful team, Malvern, who have lifted the 80-year-old shield on 23 occasions.

In brief Lehmann hospitalised Australian cricket coach Darren Lehmann has been hospitalised indefinitely after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis during Saturday’s one-day international against India in Sydney. Lehmann’s condition isn’t thought to be serious, but Cricket Australia chief medical officer John Orchard said Lehmann would miss the upcoming Twenty20 series as doctors treat the clots. “It’s a condition that’s got a very good outcome if you get it early, which we have,” Orchard said.

Cook steadies England Alastair Cook posted his first half-century of the series with an unbeaten 67 as England closed day two of the final test on 138 for two, still 337 runs behind South Africa at Centurion Park. Cook and Joe Root (31 not out) added 60 for the third wicket as England, who have won the series, look to get close to the hosts’ firstinnings total of 475 on a pitch starting to show variable bounce.

Cook is 50 short of becoming the first England batsman to reach 10,000 test runs. South Africa wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock earlier reached his maiden test century with a fluent unbeaten 129 from 128 balls.

India takes ODI thriller

By Matt Encarnacion India pinched 13 runs off the final over of the fifth and final one-day international against Australia at the SCG on Saturday night to avoid a series whitewash.

The six-wicket victory - India’s first of the five-match series ended Australia’s 18-game ODI winning streak at home.

Man-of-the-match Manish Pandey was the hero for the visitors in just his fourth ODI, hitting a classy unbeaten 104 from 81 balls to guide India to a victory target of 331 with just two balls to spare.

Mitch Marsh, whose 102 not out was key in another big Australian total, bowled the final over which produced a dubious wide before MS Dhoni hit a low full-toss for six over long-off.

Dhoni then holed out to David Warner running in from longoff, but Pandey stepped up with a glide to the third-man boundary that brought up his maiden ODI century and then he hit the

next ball over mid-off for the winning runs.

India finished at 4-331, but Australia won the series 4-1.

India set up the win thanks to a solid contributions from openers Rohit Sharma (99) and Shikhar Dhawan (78) who combined for an opening stand of 123.

At one stage they were rollicking along at seven runs an over.

But, like he did in the fourth match in Canberra, the re-introduction of John Hastings in the 19th over yielded instant dividends, sucking Dhawan into a big shot to a retreating Shaun Marsh in the deep.

Marsh dived back to take a stunning catch at deep point that brought the crowd of just over 33,000 to life.

Hastings then claimed the crucial wicket of Virat Kohli for eight - easily his lowest score of the series.

But Dhoni, who was dropped

by Nathan Lyon, then combined with Pandey to get their innings back on track, ensuring the run

rate didn’t get out of hand before eventually closing out the match.

The hosts had earlier reached 7-330 thanks to centuries from Warner (122) and Mitch Marsh.

Warner was forced to dig his heels after watching four teammates - Aaron Finch (6), Steve Smith (28), George Bailey (6) and Shaun Marsh (7) - all trudge back to the pavilion before the 22nd over.

But the Test opener, together with Mitch Marsh, quickly set about rebuilding the Australian innings with a 118-run partnership before warner holed out off Ishant Sharma’s bowling in the 39th over.

Warner finished with nine fours and three sixes in 113 balls - surpassing Greg Chappell in Australia’s top-20 one-day scorers in the process - to register his fifth ODI ton.

Marsh then put the foot down to record his maiden ODI century off just 84 balls with nine boundaries and two maximums.

rah, who captured the prize wicket of Steve Smith with his awkward right-arm action, was the pick of the bowlers with 2-40.

Dhoni said Pandey’s heroic innings would help him develop as a player.

“But what’s important for him will be the fact he’ll have to keep in mind whatever good things he did in this game - how he really calculated the run chase,” he said.

“It’s good to get somebody who’s scored 100, especially batting at number five.

“He definitely has a good future.”

Smith was left to a total seven runs from their final two overs with the bat, as well as a poor fielding display that included dropping Dhoni with the match in the balance.

“Our fielding cost us quite a lot tonight.

“We dropped a couple of quite regulation chances and when you’re dropping players like that, they’re going to come back and bite you.”

By Melissa WooDs World No.1 Serena Williams has brushed aside Russian Margarita Gasparyan to move into the Australian Open quarter-finals in Melbourne.

The defending champion needed less than a hour to roll the world No.58 in a 6-2 6-1 rout at Rod Laver Arena.

Williams next faces Maria Sharapova, the long-time rival she beat to claim her sixth title last year, in a blockbuster quarter-final tomorrow.

Sharapova earlier showed she wasn’t ready to hand over her status as one of the game’s stars

to Swiss teen Belinda Bencic just yet.

The fifth seed edged Bencic to reach the final eight for another eighth time.

Sharapova blasted 21 aces to oust the 18-year-old 12th seed 7-5 7-5 in a scintillating serving display.

In an up and down opening set, the four-times finalist and 2008 champion was broken four times but managed to keep Bencic in check and break her to take the set.

The second set went with serve until Bencic cracked at 5-6, handing last year’s finalist the match.

Sharapova predicted Bencic

would be a contender before long.

“These are the players who are going to take our spot but not just yet,” Sharapova said.

“I was really focused because she has a great game and has had a great season.”

Meanwhile Kei Nishikori became the first man through to the Australian Open quarter-finals yesterday, extending a campaign that has featured little fanfare or fuss.

Nishikori outclassed former finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-4 6-2 6-4 at Melbourne Park to set up a likely showdown with defending champion Novak Djokovic.

The seventh seed has not dropped a single set in his opening four matches but knows things won’t be so easy in the round of eight against Djokovic or Frenchman Gilles Simon.

“It’s going to be tough. Novak is playing amazing this year and Gilles is also a tough player,” Nishikori said.

“We’ll see who is going to win.”

Tsonga fired 13 aces but was too inconsistent, with Nishikori breaking his serve five times.

Nishikori took two hours to dispatch the ninth-seeded Frenchman, clambering into the final eight for a third time at Melbourne Park.

Say what you will about Nick Kyrgios, but Australian Open boss Craig Tiley knows the walking headline is good for business.

While Tiley can’t condone some of his on-court antics and would prefer the 20-year-old let his racquet do the talking, the tournament director says Kyrgios puts bums on seats.

“Nick’s created another element to the event and brought a lot to the sport because there’s a lot of intrigue around him,” Tiley said yesterday.

“It’s kind of interesting because you read the commentary about what people say about Nick and just listen to social conversation and people want to watch him.

“For whatever reason, whether it’s for his brilliant shots or they want to see him do something on the court, be the entertainer, people want to watch him.

“He’s got the flair and the colour and the entertainment and the non-traditional look about him.

“So there’s that an intrigue and interest that gets people wanting to find out more about him.

“So from an event point of view, he adds colour.

“He adds to the sport.

“But there’s a fine line. We have a circle in tennis and there’s a code and I’m respectful of our sport and you want players to stay within that code.”

Kyrgios polarises people and Tiley is advising the temperamental talent to take a leaf out of Daria Gavrilova’s book.

The Russian-born newly naturalised youngster has emerged as Australia’s darling of the court, wowing fans with her exuberance and spirit.

“Dasha’s very quickly endeared herself to the public over the past few weeks. She brings great energy and effort to the court,” Tiley said.

Ashburton Golf Club’s annual Property Brokers Shootout Final proved a resounding success yesterday, with the 18th hole coming down to a putt-off.

Nineteen players qualified for the final following five games played over the Christmas break, with a year’s free club membership at stake.

Ashburton Golf Club captain Paddy Bradford, who went out of the final on the third hole, said the day was enjoyed by all in fine conditions with a good crowd supporting the players.

llenton’s 201-run win over Tech in the final week of the Pritchard Shield marked Jeff Naish’s 150th appearance on Saturday.

Naish posted 91 to top-score for Allenton as shield winners Tech fell to their second loss of the campaign.

Naish said he was pleased to reach 150 appearances, but insisted an Allenton win is more important than any individual milestones.

“You don’t get to play that many games every year, so it’s taken 15 seasons,” he said.

“But the main goal was a win, you can’t really celebrate a milestone without winning.”

The wicketkeeper-batsman first turned out for Allenton as a 17-year-old, and went on to make almost 50 appearances for Mid Canterbury at representative level.

Naish also donned the green and gold for Mid Canterbury on the rugby paddock, notching 17 first class appearances at hooker.

The 31-year-old’s rugby career ended prematurely following a meniscus tear in his left knee, but after 4000 runs, 27 halfcenturies and four centuries, rugby’s loss has been cricket’s gain.

Naish is now aiming for another Studholme Shield triumph with Allenton, while reaching 200 appearances for his only club is also on the agenda.

“I want to keep playing, 200 I think is within reach, I’ll just keep going until the body says no,” he said.

Jeff Naish posted 91 against Tech in his 150th appearance for Allenton on Saturday.
