Bat broken in brutal assault A farmer who bashed his heavilypregnant ex-partner so hard with a baseball bat that it snapped in half became enraged after she wanted to keep the baby.

Christopher James Buick, known as Chris, now faces a lengthy jail term after the “frenzied attack” in Christchurch earlier this month, which left the 23-week pregnant woman with a fractured skull, severe facial bruising and lacerations, and a broken eye socket.

The brutal assault, where Buick aimed blows at the woman’s stomach, only stopped when she lay on the ground and pretended to be dead.

Ashburton farm contractor Buick, 32, and the victim had been long-term friends and in an onand-off relationship.

But when she fell pregnant with their first child, Buick said he

Late on the night of February 4, the victim texted Buick asking if he could visit her to discuss the baby.

They arranged a time and Buick arrived at her Christchurch home

at about 1.30am.

He was armed with a baseball bat.

As soon as she opened her front door, Buick raised the bat above his head, and smashed it down across her head.

He struck her in the head and

face “numerous times”, according to the police summary of facts which described it as a “frenzied attack”.

Buick then tried to hit the woman in the stomach with the bat, the court was told.

“The victim put herself into a foetal position in an attempt to protect her unborn child,” police said.

Buick hit her so hard that the bat snapped in half.

He then began kicking her around the head and body until she laid on the ground on her stomach “pretending to be dead”.

Police say that Buick then fled the home without checking on the woman’s condition.

The woman was hospitalised with a fractured skull, severe bruising to her face, in particular her right eye, and a broken eye

socket. She also suffered a serious laceration to her forehead and severe bruising.

The police summary does not say whether the unborn child survived the assault.

When police caught up with Buick, who has no previous criminal history, he declined to speak to them.

Yesterday at Christchurch District Court, he pleaded guilty to a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in jail.

Judge Tony Couch gave Buick his first strike under the three strikes warning legislation and remanded him in custody for sentencing.

The judge called for home detention assessment reports but warned Buick that he could face jail time.

New law could help the chronically addicted

There is merit in a new law which will force drug and alcohol addicts into residential rehabilitation programmes, Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service (ACADs) manager Chris Clark says.

The Substance Addiction (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act, introduced to Parliament by Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne, passed into law last week.

It provides for the compulsory treatment of people with severe substance addiction and severely impaired capacity, and who are not in a fit state to voluntarily commit to treatment.

Under the new law, any third party, including family members, police and health services, can apply for a person commence compulsory treatment for up to

16 weeks with specialist approval.

The legislation is based on work undertaken by the Law Commission in 2010, and cames after a Wellington coroner recommended the law be updated without delay to take into account the Bill of Rights Act in 2007.

Clark agreed the new law could prove effective for the small percentage of chronically addicted people, who would benefit from a period of sobriety to allow them time to make a decision about their future.

“We are only talking about a small number of people though,” she said.

However finding space in a residential treatment facility could prove difficult.

“There are only two facilities in Canterbury, both in Christchurch,” Clark said.

Countrywide, bed availability

is dependant of waiting lists at any particular time.

“Some people have to wait longer than others and the situation fluctuates; it can change within a short amount of time.”

While clients cannot be forced to undertake community-based treatment programmes, they can access support through ACADs while waiting for a residential spot to come up.

“We don’t have any waiting lists,” Clark said.

There has been a steady demand for the ACADs clinical service, with alcohol abuse still causing the most harm in the community, followed by methamphetamine and cannabis.

Clark said the answer to lessening alcohol and drug related harm required a “whole system” approach, with education, help and support and enforcement all having a role to play.

New store to create dozens of new jobs

Up to 100 new jobs will open up in Ashburton over the coming weeks as the district’s new supermarket manager Kyle Webber begins recruiting his staff.

With the store on target for a May opening, Webber said he has already begun the search for his management team and will shortly start the search for bakers, butchers and a host of other positions.

All up staff numbers will be somewhere between 80 and 100, he said.

“And those are all new jobs.

We’ll be advertising at the end of next week and we’re doing one big bang recruitment day, but for anyone who can’t come to that we’ll set other times.”

He’s moved from managing the Invercargill store and will spend the weeks until Ashburton South opens familiarising himself with the district and getting to know his new store and ultimately his new staff.

And he’s looking forward to the challenge of running the district’s third large supermarket.

The original Countdown store is staying in business and Webber believes there’s plenty of room in town for three super stores.

While many of the jobs that will be available in the new store will be checkout positions, for a young person keen to build a career, that job can be a good stepping stone to other positions within the Progressive Industries empire, he said.

“The company is great at developing its people; they provide heaps of opportunities, so don’t discount this as a career. You can go from check-out to supermarket manager. And it’s not just about the supermarket, there’s a whole support team. There are definite opportunities to work your way up.”

No one knows those opportunities better than Webber. He started as a liquor store assistant and check-out operator 15 years ago and is now a store manager, with the challenge of starting a new store from scratch.

He’s happy with build progress on the store, but said it’s too early to pinpoint an actual opening date.

Fishing competition under way

They say the early bird catches the worm, but in this case the early angler catches the fish.

Yesterday morning saw anglers picking their spots at the Rakaia River mouth in hopes of catching the big one and landing a prize in the Rakaia River Salmon Fishing Competition.

Despite the competition running over several days, and only 540 entrants being registered as of Tuesday, queues of fourwheeler motorbikes lined the beach while jet boaters powered

around looking for the perfect spot up stream.

Competition stalwart, Bruce Parkin, has been competing since day one.

“It has been pretty quiet so far this year, but that is the same as the past two or three,” he said.

“The river has two mouths, which in a way halves your chances.”

One angler who struck silver was Brent Adams, breaking his five-year fish-less streak in the competition.

Adams is another angler who has competed in the competi-

tion from the very start, participating in every event that had not been called off.

“I had a streak of about six competitions in a row where I landed a fish, but I hit a bit of a dry patch,” he said.

“It really isn’t the fishery it used to be, which is a shame.”

The competition will continue with fishing, a social function today night and the main prize giving, which is to be held on tomorrow at lunchtime. About $50,000 of prizes are on offer, while Linda Topp, of Topp Twins fame, will be the compere.

Two challenging nights for Nic on Family Feud By megaN gNad

Ashburton College head boy Nic Thomassen led his team through two challenging nights of channel Three’s popular TV show, Family Feud, this week.

Joined by his cousin Anja, uncle Ron and aunt Anita, the Thomassen family were automatically put through to Thursday’s show after winning Wednesday night’s round.

However, they were eventually

beaten by the Cornish family, and came away with a share of $1000 and a board game.

Nic, who was the team captain, said the whole experience had been “unreal”.

The show was filmed on November 19 and 20, which made for a long, nerve-wracking wait without spilling the beans to family and friends.

“I had to keep my mouth shut,” he said.

“It was just amazing and so well done. The production staff were so nice and so welcoming.”

The 17-year-old student, who was already a fan of the show, came up with the idea of entering when he was visiting family in the North Island.

Family Feud New Zealand features families from across New Zealand competing for the chance to win cash and prizes. They have to guess the most popular answers

to questions posed to 100 Kiwis surveyed.

Nic said comedian and host, Dai Henwood, led them through the various rounds while also asking participants stories.

“When we shot it we had just had the Kaikoura earthquakes and it was good to talk to him about it,” he said. “He’s such a down-toearth guy … and the most hilarious man you could ever meet.”

While Nic lives in Ashburton,

the rest of the family are based in Waikato, so it was a great opportunity to get everyone together for such a fun occasion.

“I highly recommended it to anyone,” Nic said. “It’s the coolest thing all four of us have done in our lives.”

Lot 9 consent raises questions

The sale of a block of land with a water consent in the Ashburton Business Park might have fallen through, but the controversy surrounding the consent itself has not gone away.

What became known as the Lot 9 deal saw Ashburton hit the headlines nationally as a homegrown protest group, Bung the Bore, campaigned to stop the sale of the land to a company that planned to bottle and export water.

With the deal off the table the protest group wanted the land’s owner, the Ashburton District Council, to cancel the consent.

The council decided to delay a decision until after October’s local body elections. It is due to return to the council table next month.

At Thursday’s council meeting the group’s founder Jen Branje spoke to councillors saying Lot 9 had been “deceitfully” marketed because the council did not have the discharge permits it claimed.

“Here we go again discussing water. The council does not, and never had, consent to use stock water to recharge. This consent is null and void until you get that recharge consent,” she said.

Death to be investigated The death of 30-year-old Nicole Morris after a fall from a moving vehicle last month is being investigated.

Morris died in Christchurch Hospital on February 19. She was found on Bealey Avenue in Christchurch on January 27.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam said a following driver stopped to help. He said the car Morris fell from also stopped and the occupants were spoken to.

However it was still unknown how she fell out of the vehicle.

“We are appealing for witnesses who saw Morris fall from the car to come forward, particularly anyone who saw the vehicle she was in.”

She fell from a silver Ford Mondeo.

“We’d like to thank passersby who stopped and assisted Morris. Now we need your help to explain the circumstances surrounding her death.”

Morris’ family have been spoken to and are being offered ongoing support.

Arthur’s Pass earthquake

Museum gains valuable sponsor One of Ashburton’s most successful home-grown businessmen and his family will ensure the Ashburton Museum is able to use vacant exhibition space previously tagged as a café.

The Ashburton District Council has tried numerous times to secure a tenant for the café, but tough restrictions tied to its resource consent have made it an

unattractive option to would-be tenants.

With the idea of a café shelved, the area became available as museum display space, but funds were not available to fit the area out.

The Hank Murney Family Trust recently approached the council and offered to foot the bill for all expenses involved in

the fit-out and maintenance of the area. In return for funding the work, the family will have naming rights to the area for 20 years.

The offer was accepted at this week’s council meeting with service delivery chairman Stuart Wilson saying it created a wonderful opportunity for the museum.

“We are very thankful to the Hank Murney Family Trust for their generous offer. This funding will allow us to host more touring and in-house exhibitions that reflect and celebrate our community’s diversity,” he said.

The sponsorship of this area will not discount it being used as a café at some time in the future.

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake at Arthur’s Pass on Thursday night was followed by a swarm of aftershocks, all centred on a similar area to the large 1994 earthquake.

GNS said it could be a delayed aftershock from 1994.

That quake, magnitude 6.7, caused 70 landslides and blocked the Otira zig-zag highway.

GNS duty seismologist Caroline Holden said what happened Thursday night was a classic main shake and aftershock sequence, the largest of which was a magnitude 4. “There is nothing unusual in the sequence.”

She did not believe it impacted on the Alpine Fault as it was located further away, where the 1994 large jolt was centred, about 25km south-east of Arthur’s Pass, she said.

It was fairly close to State Highway 73, close to a peak called Nervous Knob.

The seismic activity could even be a delayed aftershock from 23 years ago, she said.

The first quake, which was felt by many on the West Coast through to Canterbury, was measured at magnitude 4.9. Arthur’s Pass resident John Charles said he felt it as “a bit of a jolt”, and wondered if it was at Blenheim or Kaikoura again.

Whangarei gang shooting arrest A 21-year-old man has been arrested after a gang-associated shootout in Whangarei.

People were heard shouting and fighting in a house on Clark Road in Kamo, a small township north of Whangarei, before five people were shot on Wednesday night.

The man has not been charged

yet and is among three people being treated at Whangarei Hospital for bullet wounds.

Area Commander for Whangarei/Kaipara Inspector Justin Rogers said police will maintain a strong presence in Kamo and at Whangarei Hospital over the weekend.

“Our scene examination at an

address in Clark Road is ongoing and we continue to carry out area enquiries.

“We are still working to establish exactly what has occurred at the address and cannot rule out the possibility that further people were involved.

“We have received a number of a calls from members of the pub-

lic and this is greatly appreciated.”

One person remains in Auckland Hospital in a serious but stable condition, and a fifth person was released from Whangarei Hospital yesterday.

Rogers said police were following strong lines of enquiry.

Collins promises in-depth fuel price probe Energy Minister Judith Collins says an inquiry into fuel prices will be an “ i n - d e p t h” probe into whether New Zealanders are paying a Judith Collins fair price at the pump.

Collins has released the terms of reference for the inquiry into the financial performance of the fuel market, which was prompted by concerns that fuel margins – the cost difference in what fuel is imported and sold for – were increasing.

It will rely on fuel companies providing their financial information to the inquiry team, which Collins said was necessary to allow a swift initial analysis of whether there was a problem.

Collins said it would help the Government understand if there was an issue in the way fuel margins had steadily increased over recent years and, if so, how to address it. While it would be a technical inquiry, she expected “observations” about regional price differences.

“We need to know what is happening and determine if what people are paying at the pump is reasonable or whether companies are making super-normal profits.”

The terms of reference note that MBie had observed a trend of rising importer price margins since 2008 and would assess whether that was warranted and significant or not.

The inquiry team would look at the annual margins of each of the main businesses – Z Energy, BP, Mobil and Gull – and the returns on capital for the fuel companies at different stages of the supply chain.

That would be compared with other countries.

The companies will be asked to provide information broken down by markets – such as aviation, marine and retail – and different fuel types, as well as by regions. The review would also consider what future trends could be expected.

It says the study may also look at the effectiveness of competition and how to improve it in the relevant markets.

The inquiry is expected to be completed by June and will be done by consultants appointed by MBie. - NZME

Hen When you’re catching up with a movie star, it’s never going to be a runof-the-mill interview, but when you find yourself sitting on a wooden box in the middle of a chook run, you know you’re in for an entertaining hour. Reporter Sue Newman talks poultry business with Ashburton’s new reality movie legend, Brian Glassey and his 600 chooks who’ll feature on the big screen in the Kiwi doco the Pecking Order.

ife’s about the weak and the strong, the bullies and the bullied and the chicken run is just life in miniature, says chook expert Brian Glassey.

He’s a modest soul who’s never happier than when pottering with his poultry or fossicking in his garden, but he and his fellow club members have been catapulted to stardom in the most unlikely way and for the most ordinary of reasons – doing what they do in their spare time.

Brian’s a chook breeder, a chook lover and he really can’t understand what all the fuss is about.

But fuss there is. Brian and his mates have become the unwitting stars in a most unlikely movie.

It’s called Pecking Order and tells the tale of a club in crisis, a power struggle for the top job and rivalries on the show bench that could match those at any major sporting event.

The world of poultry shows captured the imagination of Kiwi movie maker Slavco Martinov.

He saw the magic and decided the poultry people’s world would make a compelling movie. It would be the ultimate down-toearth documentary.

After two years of filming Brian’s still not so sure.

“He (the movie maker) thought it was a big joke at the start.

He didn’t know anything about chooks.

“He came to our show in Christchurch and as he got into it he realised there was a lot more to it than he thought. Anywhere there were chooks and people he went.

“He filmed and interviewed dozens of people and kept coming back and coming back.”

Two years of filming and the end result’s about 45 minutes.

Brian shakes his head.

“I don’t know all the details but apparently I’m in it. He told me months ago they liked me so they put me in.”

Unlike most movies this one doesn’t have lines, doesn’t have a

plot. It’s about the poultry world in the raw.

“It’s a la natural, feeding the chooks, washing the birds, everything we do was filmed. It’s all being put together and God knows what. We just did what we do. People might think it’s a funny business, but we think what a lot of other people do is funny too.”

For the birds the big fluffy microphones and zooming camera lens were a bit of a distraction, but over the two years they became just one more thing to put up with on show days.

Brian feels a bit odd about making the director’s cut when dozens

of his poultry mates didn’t and making that cut meant a photo shoot for a poster and that was a bit awkward really, he said.

“I had to take a day off and go up there with a rooster and a chook and the photographer wanted me to sit the bird on a perch.

“Birds don’t really do that in a staged environment.”

That was the last contact Brian had with the director and crew.

Next thing the trailer’s out there and his phone’s ringing red hot.

“I went into work and everyone’s calling me chookie and giving me heaps.”

He’s not sure how he’ll look, doesn’t really care, but he’s not so keen on one of the publicity shots taken at last year’s Leeston Show.

“I’m sitting in the back of the van putting the bird’s make-up on and I look like an eccentric scientist in that photo,” he said.

What happens now Brian is unsure. He doesn’t care much either.

The documentary won’t change his life, but if it ups awareness of the world of show poultry then he’s happy.

It’s a world he’s known since he was a schoolboy.

He tells his story while we’re sitting in a yard filled with chicken coops, cages, love nests and dozens of free rangers.

It’s a noisy place. One rooster crows and sets off the next. Hens cluck contentedly and the fortunate who’re roaming wild scratch and bathe in the dust.

In many ways Brian’s backyard is a world apart. Towering trees keep out the wind and road noise, expansive beds of chrysan-

themum, dahlias and assorted perennials add splashes of colour, but its beating heart is the 600odd chooks who also call it home.

“As a kid it was my job to feed the chooks. Then I got a couple of my own and I’d started off in this crazy chook world.”

He worked after school for a man down the road. He had 2500 layers, the equivalent of today’s barn birds.

Eventually he joined the Ashburton Poultry Club. In those days it was a big organisation with a committee of 25. Today that committee numbers just eight and Brian and a few others also belong to the Christchurch club which is central to the Pecking Order documentary.

Meetings of that club are filmed as they happen – the grumpy president is exactly that and the secretary with chickens wandering over the minute book is just the way it happens, he said.

During the show season he and his birds are on the road most weekends, chasing titles and championship ribbons.

Barred rock and silkies are his specialties and, while he won’t admit to having favourites, says there’s the odd one you get to love – if they’re doing the job on the show bench. If they’re not, then life might not be long.

Perhaps surprisingly most of Brian’s birds live in cages. And there’s a pretty good reason for that he says.

“If they get out there’d be one almighty row.

“You’d have cross breeds all over the show and you wouldn’t know what was going on. It’d be chaos.”

And that chaos would have a lot to do with the ultimate bird behavioural trait, the pecking order.

There are top dog birds, bottom dog birds and the in-betweens.

The chooks decide who fits where and they sort that order out. Once it’s set, don’t interfere or there’s hell to pay.

“It’s a bit the same in poultry clubs. In many clubs there’s a lot of political nonsense, someone wanting to rock the boat and old buggers who don’t want it rocked,” Brian said.

Like the club members, the birds all have personalities. Some get grumpy, particularly roosters who’ll attack if you’re not watching.

He doesn’t name his birds, that’s dangerous when it comes to the dispatching end of things, he said.

Showing might not be fashionable or trendy, but it’s undergoing a bit of a resurgence with lifestylers and townies wanting to keep a few chooks, he said. And that means a bit of business for him, selling off pullets.

Brian breeds show birds, but he doesn’t want his chooks to be just ornaments so he does a good

sideline in egg sales too.

Mating is managed to the extent that a cock is kept in a pen with three or four hens and they’re left to do the wild thing whenever they want, he said.

“The roosters are all pretty keen. It’s pretty barbaric – one wants to do it and they all want to do it, it’s not exactly a love match.”

He hatches up to 300 chickens each year, hoping among those he’ll have a prizewinner. Finding that prizewinner is a process of elimination.

It’s a tough world and it can be a short life. Those that don’t make it can find themselves on a fast track to heaven, he said.

The perfect show bird is young, has rich plumage and once it’s been bathed and made up, it should stand out from the crowd – seriously.

White birds are bathed in soapy water, rinsed twice (bluo added to the final rinse) and dried by towel and in front of a heater.

On show day they’re primped and preened with make-up used to brighten their comb and oil rubbed into their legs.

“They don’t mind,” Brian says.

Showing birds is not a job for the faint-hearted. He can take up to 20 birds to a show.

Neither is keeping poultry a job for the lazy – at least an hour and a half is involved, morning and night, feeding and watering Brian’s lot.

With Pecking Order due for release in April, Brian says he won’t be looking to make Hollywood his next stop “I’m too old for a new career.

I’m just happy with my chooks and scratching round in the dirt in my garden.”

Is the Pecking Order truth or fantasy? Brian’s adamant it tells the real story.

“It’s all as it happens. The whole film is just us doing our normal day-to-day stuff.

“That’s the real point of it all. It’s about the individual character of each person and the chooks.”

Shepherd’s pie Serves 4-6

■ Pre-heat the oven to 190°C. Lightly grease a medium-sized oven proof dish.

■ Lamb: Heat a dash of oil in a large heavy-based saucepan over a medium-high heat. Add

the lamb mince and brown, stirring with a wooden spoon to break up the mince as it browns.

Remove to a bowl and set aside.

■ Reduce heat to low, add another dash of oil and add the onion and carrot. Cook for 10 minutes until the onion is soft.

■ Return lamb to the saucepan

with the tomatoes, stock and Worcestershire sauce. Bring just to the boil, then reduce heat, partially cover and cook mince at a gentle simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir through the chopped herbs and season. The mince should be thick but not dry.

■ Kumara topping: Boil kumara in lightly salted water for about 25 minutes or until tender. Drain, then using kitchen paper to help you, peel away the skin. Cut kumara in round slices.

■ To assemble: Spoon mince into the greased ovenproof dish and top with the kumara slices.

Sprinkle with the grated cheese and place in the oven to cook for 25 minutes or until hot and bubbling.

A contingent of Mid Canterbury’s finest tennis players will be out of the region this weekend looking to claim the Browning Shield for a fourth consecutive year.

After proving unbeatable for the past three years, the Mid Canterbury side will head to Kaiapoi this morning to take on sides from Malvern, Ellesmere and North Canterbury in the two-day tournament One of the most hotly contested

pieces of silverware for any tennis player from any of the four regions each year, the Browning Shield sees players pitted against their rivals in matches of singles, doubles and mixed doubles in a three-round format with the highest point scorers at the end of play declared the winners.

“We are heading into the weekend feeling quietly optimistic about our chances,” Mid Canterbury tennis coach, Andre van Rooyen said.

“We’ve got a good side put to-

gether with plenty of talent across the board so it will be a case of getting out there and doing the business on the court.”

The side will kick off their weekend against Malvern this morning before taking on North Canterbury this afternoon with a final round showdown against Ellesmere set for Sunday morning.

“They tell me that Ellesmere will be our toughest opposition so it’s shaping up a like a mini finale on the Sunday morning.”

Mid Canterbury has named a

strong squad for the Shield with 10 men and 10 women representing the region.

Top ranked singles players from the region; Flynn Ness and Tess McCann will have the role of steering the ship in the right direction with plenty of experience in behind them right across the board as well.

Rhys Chromie’s experience will be invaluable while the calming heads of van Rooyen, Neil McCann and Jason Feutz will also be major assets.

A dismal performance with the bat last week has put the pressure on Methven ahead of this weekend’s final qualifying round of the Muirhead Rosebowl in Mid Canterbury senior cricket.

Rolled for a paltry 25 in their match against Allenton, the Mud Dogs will be out to right the wrong of seven days ago when they host Coldstream in a match that also sees the Bevan Stroud Memorial Challenge Trophy on the line.

A shuffle up of the Methven

batting lineup is expected for the match with usual top of the order lynchpin, Mitchell Sim set to drop back to the middle order to provided some solidity against a volatile Coldstream bowling attack – spearheaded

by Richard Print and Matt Hart.

Currently second on the Muirhead Rosebowl ladder heading into the final round, with a superior run-rate to their rivals this weekend, Methven will have a chance to claim second spot with a victory and likewise Coldstream who can lock down second spot with a win as well.

stream match looks set to be a beauty – there are concerns around today’s other match between top of the table Allenton and Tech.

There is a strong possibility that the Tech Stags, for the second week in a row, maybe forced to forfeit their match against Allenton.

With a wedding on this weekend that involves two families from the side, the push was on yesterday afternoon for standin captain, Jason Morrison to find enough players willing to chuck on the whites and have a go against the competition lead-

ers. Late yesterday afternoon their numbers sat around eight players and a second consecutive default, despite the circumstances, would be a massive blow for the club, that not that long ago boasted two teams in the competition.

Allenton are assured a spot in the final of the Muirhead Rosebowl next week with the two teams below them, Methven and Coldstream battling it out to decide who will join them.

A default would make that an easy ride home for Jeff Naish’s side, but a lack of cricket would also be of a major concern.

The Warriors are facing the prospect of being without both veteran wing Manu Vatuvei and back-rower Bodene Thompson for next week’s NRL season opener against Newcastle. The pair remain in doubt to take the field at Mt Smart Stadium next Sunday.

Vatuvei trained well yesterday but is working his way back to full fitness after tweaking a knee during a wrestling session earlier this month while Thompson is battling to overcome an ankle problem.

US District Judge Christopher Cooper yesterday set a November 6 trial start in Washington. There’s so much on this weekend in Mid Canterbury that our best suggestion is to take a drive and try and catch as much of it as you can.

There’s the Ride The Rakaia, the Rakaia Fishing Competition, Young Farmers in Methven, the Mount Somers Bike Challenge and all the usual Saturday sport to sink the teeth into.

Go on, get out there. You know you want to.

Rieko Ioane worth getting excited about Burdening a youngster with expectation is always a dangerous game but it’s not easy to hold back when it comes to Rieko Ioane.

The done thing with emerging talent in New Zealand is to accentuate the work they still need to do, find reasons to be cautious and slap them down in case they start getting ahead of themselves.

But stuff that in this particular case. If ever there was a player worth getting a little bit excited by, it is Ioane.

He’s only 19 for goodness sake and he has been to the Olympics, won two All Blacks caps and in just 80 minutes, set the 2017 Super Rugby season alight. Whether he likes it or not – whether his coaches like it or not – everyone is going to now be watching him, excited to see more. Anyone with even a

passing interest in the game is going to have a look at this kid because it’s frankly not human to not be interested in him.

The only cautionary tone to come out of Ioane’s hat-trick performance is that everyone could fail to grasp just how good he’s going to be. He’s the sort of player that could only touch the ball three times in a game and still look like he’s in a different class to everyone else.

He’s 1.94m, 104kg and there is a big engine in the chassis. That engine came into play when he plucked an intercept and disappeared and again when he coasted through what was pretty much the entire Rebels backline. Someone clipped him along the way and he barely stumbled before returning to cruising speed.

The Blues won’t be keen on having a fixed view about how they should use Ioane for the remainder of the season. The youngster can play centre or wing and is such a talent, that he will be able to flip between the two without any dramas. The prospect of Ioane running off Sonny Bill Williams in the midfield will be tempting, but then again, having him on the wing, at the end of a backline that now looks capable of creating space, will be equally appealing.

Just as the Blues broke the habit of a lifetime by winning away from home on Thursday night, so too should those who follow them think about doing the same and just get a little bit optimistic and expectant about the emerging talent that is Rieko Ioane.

They said it “When you need to go to the toilet, you have to go to the toilet.” Australian cricketer, Matt Renshaw had that to say after a situation in the opening test between Australia and India in Pune after he retired hurt to go the toilet just 15 minutes shy of lunch.

The opening bat, who returned to the crease to top score with 68 ran off the field with a complaint he was ill – but the toilet was beckoning. Allan Border wasn’t too happy. But, as Renshaw says – when you got to go, you got to go.

Oracle skipper Jimmy Spithill, who has often warned of the dangers inherent with these high-speed catamarans, described this incident as “the longest two seconds”.

Win overdue for Sky City King

There would be no more deserving winner at tomorrow’s Hororata Trotting Club meeting at Methven than Sky City King.

The Terry McMillan trained pacer has produced a string of consistent results since beginning his career, but up until now that elusive first victory has eluded the seven-year-old.

Last Sunday at Geraldine, things looked good when he strode to the front only to be collared in the shadows of the post.

So with a little more luck tomorrow, surely his time is come.

“He’ll win a race one day, there’s never been much doubt about that,” McMillan said.

We don’t have match races these days, but the closest you will get to seeing one is when Kawi faces off against Start Wondering in today’s $200,000 Haunui Farm group one WFA Classic at Otaki.

Plenty can go wrong in a horse race and it will probably need to for this not to be the quinella result, Sofia Rosa being the only question mark in preventing that.

This is a race in which you do not want to see either Kawi or Start Wondering beaten.

Start Wondering beat Kawi by 1.7 lengths when the latter finished fifth in the $200,000 NRM Sprint at Te Rapa last start. Against this returning a similar result is that Kawi produced very fresh at Te Rapa in his first start after returning from Perth. He got rid of jockey Michael Walker in the birdcage and continued playing up on the way to the start.

That he had enough energy left to run

home strongly in a fast-run 1:21.22 1400m says a lot for his talent. He should be more settled this time and the step up to 1600m will also be in his favour.

Start Wondering is coming off a 1200m victory in Ellerslie’s group one Railway, a nose defeat in Trentham’s 1200m Telegraph and a 1400m win at Te Rapa last start.

Few horses can compete successfully at 1200m, 1400m and 1600m at Group 1 level – Start Wondering is the exception.

After Start Wondering’s last three races many will be believing him to be simply a sprinter, but he has had six 1600m races for three wins and three placings before he left to join Chris Waller’s Sydney stable and before he bled and returned home he won over 1500m on a heavy track at Rosehill, which would be the same as 1600m. “We’ve always thought 1600m was his best distance,” said co-trainer Evan Rayner yesterday. - NZME

Sky CEO plans to stay in role

Sky TV boss John Fellet says the failure of his company’s plan to merge with Vodafone does not impact on his future.

The Commerce Commission on Thursday rejected Sky’s and Vodafone’s merger proposal, citing Sky’s exclusive rights to premium sports content which it said would cause people to switch from rival telcos, thus reducing competition in telecommunications markets.

Sky’s share price closed down 13.1 per cent on the news, and was yesterday afternoon at $3.80.

Sky has also been struggling to shore-up its subscriber base as consumers turn to alternatives like Netflix and Lightbox.

Business and technology commentator Paul Spain said he wouldn’t be surprised to see some changes at the top levels of Sky’s leadership, such as Fellet who has been chief executive since 2001.

The incredible growth of craft beer in the past decade has created a difficult dilemma for many of the nation’s craft brewers, who suddenly find themselves running multimillion-dollar operations.

The craft beer boom has transformed the industry.

Statistics released yesterday show total beer consumption is growing again for the first time in years.

The high alcohol category – which tends to reflect the craft beer end of the market – has doubled in the past five years and rose 17 per cent last year.

But some breweries have been growing much faster.

Take a look at the Deloitte Fast 50 index – which tracks New Zealand’s fastest growing companies.

Panhead – which has been snapped up

by Lion for $25 million – was fourth on that list in 2016 with revenue growth of 925 per cent.

Tuatara, which was purchased early this month by DB for an undisclosed sum, made the list for three years in a row from 2009 to 2011.

In 2015 Garage Project topped the list with 664 per cent growth and fellow Wellington brewer ParrotDog saw 263 per cent

John Fellet On Radio New Zealand yesterday Fellet said the commission’s decision did not impact on his future at Sky TV. He said he enjoyed his role, which he carried out at the behest of shareholders, and has worked for Sky for 26 years.

“It is very difficult,” says Tuatara founder and brewer Carl Vasta. “Especially if you are doing it yourself. You run out of stainless steel tanks pretty quickly.”

“When you are producing a high quality beer that requires expensive ingredients, it’s not just the hardware, if you’ve got to buy a million worth of hops for next season and you have to pay for that today.”

Vasta made headlines this month with the sale to DB, a move that will have disappointed some purist independent craft beer fanatics.

“We looked at a few options,” says Vasta, who will stay on with Tuatara and is excited about putting his focus back on the beer making.

Those included crowd-funding, more private equity (Tuatara already had some investment from PE fund Rangatira) and even a stock market listing.

“We talked about it with the private equity company when they came in. That we could grow the business and then look at listing.”

But after doing some research, he decided the costs of listing were too daunting.

FBI asked to dispute reports White House chief of staff Reince Priebus asked a top FBI official to dispute media reports that President Donald Trump’s campaign advisers were frequently in touch with Russian intelligence agents during the election, a White House official said late yesterday.

The official said Priebus’ request came after the FBI told the White House it believed a New York Times report last week describing those contacts was not accurate. As of yesterday, the FBI had not stated that position publicly and there was no indication it planned to.

The New York Times reported that US agencies had intercepted phone calls last year between Russian intelligence officials and members of Trump’s 2016 campaign team.

Priebus’ discussion with FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe sparked outrage among some Democrats, who said he was violating policies intended to limit communications between the law enforcement agency and the White House on pending investigations.

The FBI would not say whether it had contacted the White House about the veracity of the Times report.

Trump has been shadowed by questions about potential ties to Russia since winning the election. US intelligence agencies have also concluded that Russia meddled in the campaign to help Trump defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton.

Last week, Trump fired national security adviser Michael Flynn because he misled Vice President Mike Pence and other White House officials about his contacts with

the Russian ambassador to the US. Trump and his advisers have denied contacts with Russian officials during the election.

Priebus alluded to his contacts with the FBI over the weekend, telling Fox News that “the top levels of the intelligence community” have assured him that the allegations of campaign contacts with Russia were “not only grossly overstated, but also wrong”.

One Direction’s Liam Payne will become the second father in the band. Cole, 33 and Payne, 23, met on British talent show The X Factor. The two have been dating since 2015. This will be the second One Direction baby after Louis Tomlinson became a dad to a baby boy.

Actress Reese Witherspoon has said that of all the countries she’s visited, New Zealand is her favourite. Speaking to The Edge radio station, the actress also said New Zealand was the “most beautiful country in the world”, and described locals as “encouraging and lovely”.

The star, who is currently in Wanaka filming the movie A Wrinkle in Time with Oprah and Mindy Kaling, said they were “touched” by their New Zealand experience over the last couple of weeks.

“The food is wonderful, the landscapes are gorgeous, but most importantly, the people have been so kind and so friendly and opened up their homes.”

The banned chemical weapon VX nerve agent was used in the murder of Kim Jong Nam, the North Korean ruler’s outcast half brother who was poisoned last week at the airport in Kuala Lumpur, police said yesterday.

The substance was detected on Kim’s eyes and face, Malaysia’s inspector general of police said in a written statement, citing a preliminary analysis from the country’s Chemistry Department.

in a crowded airport terminal seems straight out of a spy novel, has unleashed a diplomatic crisis that escalates by the day.

The case has swept North Korea into the centre of one of the world’s biggest news stories.

According to investigators, two women — one of them Indonesian, the other Vietnamese — coated their hands with chemicals and wiped them on Kim’s face on February 13 as he waited for a flight home to Macau, where he lived with his family.

He sought help from airport staff but he fell into convulsions and died on the way to the hospital within two hours of the attack, police said.

The case has perplexed toxicologists, who question how the two women could have walked away unscathed after handling a powerful poison, even if — as Malaysian police say — the women were instructed to wash their hands right after the attack.

North Korea has denounced Malaysia’s investigation as

Craptactular added to Oxford Dictionary People in search of fitspiration should concentrate more on HIIT and less on clicktivism at the end of their craptacular working days.

These are just a few of the 300 words recently added to OxfordDictionaries.com, which monitors current trends in the use of modern English.

Fitness and well-being featured prominently as themes amongst the words added, with fitspiration (a person or thing that serves as motivation for someone to sustain or improve health and fitness), superfruit (a nutrient-rich fruit considered to be especially beneficial

for health and well-being) and aquafaba (chickpea water used in vegan cooking) all being added to the list.

HIIT, an acronym of high intensity interval training, also made its way into the free online dictionary for the first time, whilst jelly received a new definition as an informal usage of jealous.

Craptactular, a blend of crap and spectacular, made its first appearance to describe something remarkably poor or disappointing, whilst clicktivism featured as a term to describe actions performed on the internet in support of a political

or social cause, regarded as requiring little time or involvement, such as signing an online petition.

Bronde, referring to blonde hair with sections of brown, and drunk text, denoting a text message sent whilst inebriated, often one that is embarrassing or foolish, have also made the grade with their respective entries.

Oxford Dictionaries’ head of content development Angus Stevenson said the wide range of new terms complemented reports of recent socio-cultural trends, such as those suggesting millennials are choosing to

spend less money on alcohol and more money eating exotic world foods.

Some food-related additions to the online dictionary included the north-African spice mixture ras-el-hanout, the South East Asian rice noodle dish pad kee mao, and the spicy Korean paste gochujang.

Other additions included bracket-buster, to describe sports games where a lowranking team unexpectedly defeats a high-ranking team, such as that of Lincoln City’s remarkable upset in their FA Cup fixture against Premier League side Burnley.

T

his week the Government announced a lofty ambition; 90 per cent of the country’s rivers, streams and lakes will be swimmable by 2040.

If the target can be achieved, my grandchildren will be 27 and 25 respectively before they can enjoy what generations before them did – the delight of swimming in cool, fresh water on a hot summer’s day without risking contracting a nasty bug.

Not only are children at risk from the water, in the majority of Canterbury rivers it’s not even safe to allow your dog to take a dip.

That’s a crying shame.

But Environment Minister Nick Smith made a good point when he said the “ambitious” target, if achieved, would return New Zealand’s waterways to a standard not seen in 50 years.

While it’s tempting to climb on the bandwagon to rail against today’s intensive farming practices, the problems began well over a century ago, in a time when ignorance was bliss.

A farmer recently told me applying fertiliser mixed with DDT, an insecticide used to target grassgrub, was a mandatory condition of his bank loan in the early1950s. Concerns about the environmental impacts of DDT mounted, resulting in its ban in 1989, by which time about 40 per cent of Canterbury lamb had DDT levels above the European Union’s permitted limits.

The same ad hoc approach applied to fertiliser. Superphosphate has been in use since the late 1800s and for many decades it was liberally applied without any thought of the future health of our waterways. It wasn’t because farmers didn’t care – they just didn’t know and couldn’t foresee the green, slimy rivers their descendants would inherit.

Those living in the rapidly growing urban centres of the day also contributed by discharging untreated sewage and industrial waste into waterways.

There’s no doubt we are now paying for the mistakes of the past, including the recent past, but we all understand what has to be done if we want to have swimmable rivers.

Apportioning blame will not help.

Why do principals leave their profession around 60?

A

recent NZ Herald headline screamed ‘Principal Shortage at Critical Levels’.

I checked my height and nope – I’m still as tall as I was last time there was a shortage of teachers.

So what were they on about?

It turns out that the average age of a principal is in the high 50s and New Zealand will begin to see large numbers retire in the next five years. The article research pointed out that the average age when a principal retires is 60.

Looking around this town I can see a number of vacancies coming up in some primary schools, although it won’t be me as I’m happily hanging on to my 40s until next year when I score my half ton.

So why do principals retire around 60 and not go for a few more years? Physically it is not a highly-demanding job, but you certainly need good health to deal with stress.

Many times staff have said to me, “I wouldn’t want your job”.

This is often muttered just before I need to deal with a situation that will probably be emotionally charged.

I can see why principals would get out before they hit 65 when it comes to working with children. Now I’m not talking about naughty children, although the 1 per cent of severe behaviour is stressful. It is actually when dealing with situations that involve children, when it is not their doing, that has led to them being there. I will give you some examples: Parent break-ups – It is not uncommon that I know about a relationship break-up before the child does. It makes it tough seeing them play happily during the day, unaware that their parents are going to tell them that night or weekend, that family life as

they know it will never be the same again.

Peer isolation – One of the cruellest forms of bullying is when one child is isolated by usually two or more other children. This can be very subtle and difficult to track initially. I’ve known children to manipulate friendships during class times so that when a child comes out to play, her friends shun her and play with others.

Children will also change the rules of games to isolate someone if they are not as competent, leaving them behind. On the face of it, it looks like everyone was playing by the rules, when in fact manipulation took place in order to exclude someone.

The bullied child often has no idea they were the target at first.

Seesaw parenting – In this situation a child receives both over-the-top indulgence from a parent and severe punishment.

These can happen on the same day. I’ve known a child to receive the latest video games, costing hundreds of dollars, only to have them confiscated for a month due to school behaviour. It is not uncommon to hear parents tell you how they have removed everything from their room, even the TV and phone they got for Christmas.

A child in this unstable behaviour system begins to mistrust adults and this leads to many issues at school.

The death of a child – One of my more difficult times was informing other children of the death of a child they knew. It is all very well to say you would be honest and tell them straight up, but when you sit with them and see the confusion and hurt, you wish for anything to get you out of that situation.

Child, Youth and Family – I have made countless CYF

notifications like many of my colleagues. Most I can deal with by saying to myself, “it’s my responsibility to do this for the good of the child”. A few leave you empty inside as you deal with the details of depravity that adults have sunk to.

One of the toughest weeks I had I nicknamed P Week. In the space of one week I made three different CYF notifications for three different families. Two involved P in the house. Meth users become very sick people. They are willing to forego everything around them to score cash for their next hit.

A child in a meth home will see and hear horrific scenes of depraved living. There will be other adults who enter their world and prey on their mother or father, and sometimes them.

There is absolutely no money at times and often no possessions as these are pawned off for cash.

This includes the child’s possessions.

Do not be fooled into thinking this is a racial or level of society issue, as meth use crosses all levels and cultures. And don’t believe it doesn’t happen here in Ashburton, as it is becoming more common each year.

However, depressing as some of my comments have been, working with children and teachers who inspire and encourage children, more than makes up for the stressful parts of the job.

My years before I retire will certainly not be boring and that is something I look forward to.

If you love your neighbour as yourself, you’re doing right A little while back I had the privilege of being part of a welcome at Hakatere Marae for the Muslim immigrants of Mid Canterbury.

I was left with some vivid impressions.

Before the welcome, the Muslim people prayed outside in the direction of Mecca. A person commented that “we need that passion among Christians”. Yes indeed.

The welcome and response was in Te Reo, English and Arabic.

There were expressions of good will and support from both sides and explanations of the two cultures.

After that we ate some food together and talked. The Muslim people came from different countries and had jobs they had been in for several years or were students. Every person I spoke to was gracious and humble and appreciative of living in Mid Canterbury. I felt much more at ease with them than the corrupted values and posturing lifestyles of Hollywood.

The Muslim world is in turmoil

today and how it will play out is uncertain.

The majority of people killed by Isis are Muslims.

Many questions arise. Islam is a very different faith to Christianity, but this may well be a time when Muslim people are more open to Jesus whom they revere as a prophet.

So how are Christians to act in the meantime? Jesus said he was sending his people into the world

to be salt and light. This is filled with meaning, but one aspect is explained in James Chapter 2 and verse 8. “If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’, you are doing right.”

It is the community we want in our lovely Mid Canterbury.
