‘One minute, one second of mayhem’ September 1, 2014 started just like any other Monday morning for the staff at Ashburton’s Work and Income office, a court has been told.

At 9am staff were beginning their working week, making coffee, sharing details of their weekends, assisting clients and going about their normal duties.

That normality was soon to be shattered. At 9.51am Russell John Tully entered the Cass Street office with the intention of killing the entire staff, Crown prosecutor Andrew McRae said during his opening address at Tully’s High Court trial in Christchurch yesterday.

Tully’s trial began without him pre-

sent in the courtroom and in lieu of his own legal counsel, advised by Phil Shamy and James Rapley in the role of amicus curia.

The 49-year-old stands accused of murdering Work and Income employees Peggy Turuhira Noble and Susan Leigh Cleveland, the attempted murder of Lindy Louise Curtis and Kim Elizabeth Adams and other charges relating to the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition and setting a mantrap.

Mr McRae spoke of Tully’s frustration and anger over his perceived unjust treatment from Work and Income staff in the weeks leading up to the events of September 1, 2014.

Mr McRae said witnesses and CCTV footage would show Tully’s movements on the morning of the shootings, culminating in his arriving at the Cass Street office, where he allegedly removed a sawn-off pump-action shotgun from his backpack, pulled a balaclava over his face and entered the building.

At 9.51am he is alleged to have shot Ms Noble at point-blank range as she sat at the reception desk speaking to a client. She died almost instantaneously.

Worried about family’s welfare

When cyclone Winston hit Fiji on Saturday Ashburton woman Anjalyn Sharma knew her parents’ village Nabouwalu was in the heart of the disaster area.

She tried desperately to contact her family but it would be several days before her father phoned. Her family had escaped without injury but their home and their crops had been destroyed.

“My dad had to go a very long way from home to phone and say they were safe but now I can’t get any updates because there is no coverage so I don’t know if they have food or clean water,” she said.

The family’s house has blown away, crops have been destroyed and even the coconut trees that formed their main income have gone, Ms Sharma said.

“My family was not injured but they’re emotionally very upset. It was a real relief when I talked to my dad but I know my parents are really struggling now. They have no means of income, no power, no water and

no medical facilities.”

She wants to travel to Fiji to check on her family but the transportation network around the village has been destroyed and sea access is impossible because the village jetty has been washed away.

That single phone call has been her only link with her family and she is now spending sleepless nights worrying about their welfare.

“My parents were struggling, they’ve worked their whole lives to get where they are and now everything has gone. They have to start again from scratch. The main thing is they are safe, but like so many people they need everything. Everything they had has gone,” she said.

From the safety of her home in Ashburton, Ms Sharma said she feels helpless and knows the only thing she is able to do is to raise the awareness of the desperate need the Fijian people now have for money, clothing, non-perishable food and for aid.

“They need volunteers over there, they need doctors and they need all sorts of help,” she said.

Ashburton’s Fijian community, led by Torika Patterson, is setting up collection points around Ashburton to receive donations of clothing and bedding to help in the Fiji aid appeal.

Originally from Papakura, but now based in Perth, Mr Douglas has had over 40 years in the aeroindustry and will be judging the aerobatic and formation competitions.

Flying got under way yesterday morning with the three-ship formation competition, forced and spot landings and the aerobatic competition.

Today, will see navigation and low-level flying competitions take place as well as streamer cutting and a sausage sizzle.

Pilots, aeroplane enthusiasts and spectators have converged on the Ashburton Airport for six days of top-notch flying.

The Flying New Zealand National Championships officially began yesterday and for the first time, Ashburton is also hosting the Wings Trans-Tasman International Competition which sees Kiwis and Aussies pitted against one another in the sky.

The annual event, which is held alternate years in Australia and New Zealand, began with a welcome from Flying NZ president Rob George, Australian team manager Marj Davis Gillespie, and Ashburton District Mayor Angus McKay. Competitions over the six-day

Tully turned his attention to Ms Curtis who was huddled beneath a desk with a client. The Crown contends she moved her leg averting a head wound when Tully fired at her.

“That reflex action was sufficient to stop her from receiv-

ing a life-threatening injury,” Mr McRae said.

He said Tully ignored the client beside Ms Curtis because his grievance was solely focused on Work and Income employees.

At the rear of the offices he found Ms Cleveland, the person he had dealt with most and with whom he was “most dissatisfied”.

He fired at her twice as she pleaded for her life, turned away but returned to shoot her again to ensure she was dead, Mr McRae said.

Witnesses will describe Tully leaving the scene and fleeing to-

ward the Ashburton River track, the jury was told.

He was arrested near Lake Hood almost eight hours later, in possession of a note with the words “Leigh Cleveland” “Kim Adams” and “discrimination” written on it. The Crown asserts this proves intent.

Mr McRae spent some time outlining Tully’s escalating demands and growing dissatisfaction with the service he received from Work and Income, which eventually resulted in him being trespassed from the office.

He was allegedly homeless at

As Tully was not present to enter pleas when the charges were read, he was deemed to have pleaded not guilty to each of the seven charges.

UK couple win Lotto – set eyes on New Zealand A UK couple – who are also avid Lord of the Rings fans – have won a record £32.5 million ($67 million) in the national lottery and now plan to fulfil a lifelong dream of visiting New Zealand.

Lisa Cannings, 48, and her retired teacher husband Gerry, 63, went public about their Lotto rollover win yesterday and revealed that they only bought the winning ticket because of a chance takeaway visit, the Daily Mail reported.

The couple, who fell in love over meetings at a school photocopier, were visiting Mr Cannings’ 96-year-old father when they opted to go to a fish and chip shop rather than cook on a Saturday night.

But despite later learning they had won the second biggest prize in Lotto’s history in the UK, the pair chose not to claim their prize for a week – because they had a painter in redecorating their £220,000 home.

Instead Mr Cannings spent a nerve-wracking few days walking around with the ticket in his pocket.

He said: “It’s just the way we are – we don’t really worry about things or make a drama.

“You could say we’re a bit boring like that.”

Top of the list is New Zealand as the family are keen Lord of the Rings fans and would love to visit the country where it was filmed, the Daily Mail reported.

“We can go where we want – and travel first class, too. After looking after the family, what this money brings is a chance to enjoy new experiences and see places we thought we wouldn’t get to see,” Mr Cannings said.

Mr Cannings, a retired school teacher, is now on the lookout for a larger home big enough to sleep all the family at Christmas. The keen golfer is also after a car wide enough to fit all his golf clubs in and the couple plan to go travelling.

Mrs Cannings revealed she now plans to take early retirement from her job at Hampton College, Peterborough.

Child hurt in dog attack outside Allenton School

A dog attack outside Allenton School has sparked an investigation by animal control.

Ashburton District Council environmental services manager Jane Donaldson said a child required medical treatment after being bitten by a dog outside the school on Monday, February 15.

“We are not in a position to comment further because an investigation into the incident has not been completed.

“The school has taken steps

to minimise the chance of any future incidents and wishes to protect the privacy of those involved.”

Allenton School principal Graham Smith said he believed the child involved in the incident, which happened after school, was a preschooler.

The incident prompted the school to put a reminder in their newsletter that dogs are banned from the school grounds.

“Under no circumstances should dogs be at school unless prior approval has been ob-

tained from the principal,” the notice said.

While he did not want parents to feel they could not walk their dogs past the school, they needed to use commonsense and not walk dogs to and from school at the start and end of the day.

“This is for the health and safety of children and dogs.

“It only takes an instant for a dog to become overwhelmed and bite a child and tying a dog up outside the gate only attracts more children.

“The school has also had a

problem with dog droppings on the grounds, which should not be occurring as dogs are banned,” he said.

ACC receives an average of 78 dog-related injury claims for Ashburton a year, however most dog-related injuries are minor only required a visit to the GP. The most common injuries included lacerations and soft tissue injuries.

From 2010 to 2014 there were 391 injuries costing a total of nearly $200,000 (including costs accrued from previous years).

In brief Kids’ cooking course Kids keen to whip up delicious delicacies in the kitchen are in luck. Base Youth Centre is running a Kids Can Cook course, where children aged 10 to 14 can learn how to cook meals for the families as well as tasty lunchbox treats.

Priest cuts hole in fence for students’ safety

The stolen car crashed within blocks of the supermarket shortly after 7pm while police staff and the police’s Eagle helicopter were moving in on it.

Officers were quickly able to track the offenders across nearby properties where they were arrested.

The youths, aged 13 and 15, were to appear in court yesterday on charges of kidnapping, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, wilful damage and assault with intent to rob.

Auckland City Police acting district commander Jill Rogers said incredible teamwork between members of the public and police ensured a potentially devastating incident was resolved quickly and that the child, who was unharmed, was safely reunited with her family. “This was a terrifying ordeal for the family.”

Most parents did not use the carpark because children would have to walk about 200m to the Park Street entrance of the car-

park to get to the vehicles, she said. “[The hole] makes it easier for children to go straight to the carpark.”

Parents are also encouraged to use the quieter Cameron Street entrance, which has plenty of parking, for students’ safety.

Working poor struggling – Sallies

Community foodbank figures suggest Ashburton’s working poor are struggling more now than ever before.

According to the Salvation Army demand for food parcels is on the increase, thanks partly to the high cost of rent, but it is not just the unemployed who are struggling.

Ashburton Salvation Army Major Ken Smith said the need for food parcels had increased substantially in the past year.

From 2011 to 2014 there was a 20 per cent increase in food parcel allocations, but from 2014 to 2015 alone, demand increased by a whopping 53 per cent.

In 2011, 30 large family-sized food parcels were distributed into the Mid Canterbury community and last year that increased to 51.

There were also 125 singlesized parcels distributed, up from 57 in 2011 and 97 smaller family-sized parcels.

Already this year 61 food parcels have been collected by people in need.

Major Smith said once upon a time food parcels were given out to the poor or those who were unemployed and struggling to find work.

However, there has been a shift and people needing help from the foodbank are often working on minimum wage or

not getting sick pay and struggling to pay bills.

As to why demand has spiked so rapidly, Mr Smith said there were many factors.

High rents and other bills came into play, but nowadays there was more to spend money on, including the likes of Sky TV, smartphones and other non-essentials.

To ensure there is enough food to go around the Salvation Army has many systems in place.

It works closely with Progressive Enterprise’s Food Rescue and also relies on donations from local food drives, as well as the generosity of local farmers.

It really is a “community” foodbank, Major Smith said.

One patient with moderate injuries was taken by ambulance to Ashburton Hospital following a car crash in Ashburton on Tuesday. Two cars collided at the intersection of Wills and Winter streets, resulting in one car ending up on its side. A St John spokesperson said yesterday that one patient with moderate injuries had been taken to Ashburton Hospital.

Meanwhile, two cars collided at the intersection of Chapman Street and Bowen Street at Rakaia about 4.10pm yesterday. The Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to the scene. It is believed one of the drivers failed to give way.

Only minor injuries in the form of seatbelt bruising were reported.

Fire call-outs Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade members attended two fire callouts within a short time of each other yesterday. Firefighters were called to a small fuel spill at Z petrol station on West Street at 1.47pm and then to a false alarm from a controlled burn-off near Fairton at 2.16pm.

Bomb threats A number of schools around New Zealand are believed to have received bomb threats, police say.

Brookfield School on Miller Rd in Tauranga has been evacuated this afternoon after receiving a threat.

Police said all staff and children had been accounted for and had been taken to a nearby reserve.

Trashed vehicles How a fleet of likely stolen cars ended up in a stretch of remote bush near Dunedin is set to remain a mystery. Senior Constable Steve Tvrdeic, of Port Chalmers, visited the site yesterday with a tramper who discovered the vehicles. They found about 10 cars dumped down a 30-metre bank in a quarry in the Silverpeaks Forest, about 12.5km west of Waitati. The cars had been stripped of parts which suggested they had been stolen, Snr Const Tvrdeic said. It looked as though the cars had been there for some time, meaning there would be no forensic evidence left and how they got there would most likely remain

Tournament draws record numbers

Allenton School students came out on top of more than 200 children around the district competing in a cricket tournament yesterday.

Twenty teams from 13 Mid Canterbury schools took part in this year’s Ashburton Trust Year 5/6 Cricket Tournament, which was organised by the Mid Canterbury Cricket Association, at the Ashburton Domain cricket

oval. MCCA director Garfield Charles said Allenton School’s two teams each won their final, one against Methven 1 and the other against Ashburton Borough School.

The winner, determined from this, was the team with the most runs for the day which was Allenton 2 with 376. This year’s event was “fantastic” and had a record number of students and teams participating, he said.

Last year only 16 entered.

The only downside to the day was that they had to delay their start due to one school arriving late which meant the tournament ran over time.

The competition is a great way to get kids playing and hopefully interested in the sport, Mr Charles said.

Year 9 and 10 students from Ashburton College umpired the event.

A Year 7/8 Cricket Tournament will be held in Term 4.

Do you need to know how to make friends?

In brief Mars recall Mars has recalled chocolate bars and other products in 55 countries, mainly in Europe, after bits of plastic were found in a Snickers bar in Germany. All of the recalled products – which include Mars, Snickers and Milky Way bars – were manufactured at a Dutch factory in Veghel, according to a Mars spokeswoman yesterday.

The recall follows a complaint on January 8 from a consumer in Germany who found red plastic in a Snickers bar and sent it back to the company. A Mars New Zealand spokeswoman said most of the company’s New Zealand chocolate products are made in Australia.

“This withdrawal does not affect us,” she said.

In order to reduce the isolation of Mid Canterbury youth, a new tool has been developed.

Think First project co-ordinator John Hobbs has developed a resource around how to make friends and build and maintain positive relationships.

“It has basically been created to raise awareness about the importance of healthy friendships and also, what they can look like,” Mr Hobbs said.

“For a lot of people Mid Canterbury can be inaccessible in terms of transport which can lead to it being hard to meet people [and] make friends.”

The resource also ties in with the notion of encouraging positive social behaviour in an effort to reduce bullying, he said.

Targeted at youth but available for people of all ages, Mr Hobbs said it was more of a guide to making friends than a rule book.

It covers what to look for in friends as well as tips and tricks and information as to why friends are important.

The need for such a resource was discovered through research completed nearly three years ago.

A scoping document that consulted with a large cross-section of the community on what they perceived as issue and possible solutions.

Stolen bear returned A handcrafted baby polar bear lantern which was stolen from the Auckland Lantern Festival has found its way to the Orewa police station. The lantern was taken from the China on Ice display at the Auckland Domain. It was left outside the station about 1am with an anonymous note saying the person had taken it and was now returning it. Police said they were unsure where his journey had taken him.

Awaroa beach bid a winner The campaign to buy a pristine Abel Tasman beach for the nation has been successful.

The Givealittle campaign to buy the Awaroa Inlet beach by tender was supported by more than 39,000 people who pledged more than $2 million.

Campaign organiser Duane Major said yesterday morning: “We have pulled it off, we have pulled it off.

“At 10.57 last night we delivered a pristine piece of beach and bush into the hands of all New Zealanders to look after and

cherish and treasure forever.

“My heart is beating and I’ve got goosebumps and I’m just so thankful for all those people.

“What a crazy journey.”

Mr Major revealed that the final amount raised by the public was $2,278,171.09. The Government supported the bid with a “modest” contribution.

Mr Major said he always thought the bid would be successful.

“I always thought we could do it. You think about the heartbeat of New Zealanders and you think

about the numbers. I did not anticipate the crazy, freakish nature of this campaign but boy is this rewarding. It’s satisfying to actually pull it off and to take those ideas and hunches and feelings and to put it into practice.”

He said it had left them with a deep down sense of satisfaction.

“We’ve done something very special I believe.”

However, at the weekend, Mr Major said the campaign was preparing for disappointment.

Mr Major said he had been keeping those who pledged

money to buy the beach, which would be gifted to the Crown if negotiations are successful, updated via Facebook, writing that the scenario was “unprecedented and highly unusual”.

“Obviously one scenario ahead is that we simply may not have enough money.

“We have become hugely [in] vested in this, like many of you all. We would be gutted to miss out, but we would like to think we could grieve well, learn, celebrate and become better for it.”

Mr Collins delved into the military careers of two World War One soldiers, Alan Stitt of Ashburton and Eric Hudson of Lincoln.

Both returned from the war and had associations with Lincoln University. Gallery publicity officer Nicole Bourke said the talk had inspired many attending and some with an interest in local history were considering further research into the Stitt family.

Three straight to Trump Donald Trump decisively won Nevada’s Republican caucuses yesterday as his main rivals battled for second place in an increasingly urgent effort to slam the brakes on the Trump juggernaut.

Trump now has three straight victories – in the West, the South and Northeast – a testament to his broad appeal among the mad-as-hell voters making their voices heard in the 2016 presidential race.

Six in 10 caucus goers said they were angry with the way the government is working, and Trump got about half of those angry voters, according to preliminary results of an entrance poll.

Nevada was a critical test for Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, the two senators battling to emerge as the clear alternative to the Republican front-runner. Rubio was out to prove he can build on recent momentum, while Cruz was looking for a spark to recover from a particularly rocky stretch in his campaign.

Rubio, already campaigning in Michigan as caucus results rolled in, was projecting confidence that he can consolidate the non-Trump voters who have been splintering among an assortment of Republican candidates, saying, “we have incredible room to grow”.

by TV2 – and it was instantly mocked on Twitter. Applications have opened for those wanting to be contestants on the show, a statement from TV2 said. The hit reality show makes teams live in tribes on remote islands and compete in challenges with limited food and supplies, with contestants forming alliances and eliminating each other one by one. The last remaining survivor wins $US1 million, although TV2 hasn’t yet confirmed prize money, the location or host.

Applicants need a current passport to apply.

Baby among cyclone death toll A 10-month-old baby is among those missing and presumed dead from the massive cyclone that hit Fiji after the boy’s parents told a local television station they lost hold of him amid ferocious winds and floodwaters that rose to their necks.

The death toll from Cyclone Winston has risen to 42.

Another four people are listed as missing, including the infant on Koro Island, where at least 10 people have died.

The cyclone tore through the Pacific Island chain over the weekend with winds that reached 285 kilometres per hour, making it the strongest storm in Fiji’s recorded history.

The boy’s father Alifereti Samu told Fiji One Television that they ran from the coastal home where they were sheltering and were expecting the winds but not the huge seas.

“When the winds began to rise, we then ran for safety,” he said, adding they tried to keep their son above water.

“The water level was up to my neck,” Samu said. “The house began to fall and waves began to pound on us.”

He said their son was their firstborn.

“We still haven’t found him.

Woman who cut baby from womb convicted Jurors have convicted a Colorado woman of cutting a stranger’s baby from her womb in a case that reignited the debate over the legal rights of fetuses.

The jury found Dynel Lane guilty of attempted first-degree murder, assault and unlawful termination of a pregnancy in last year’s attack.

Prosecutors say Lane went to great lengths to convince others she was expecting a baby before luring Michelle Wilkins to her home with a Craigslist ad for maternity clothes.

She then hit and choked Wilkins before using two kitchen knives to cut out the unborn girl.

Wilkins, who was 7 1/2 months pregnant, survived, but her baby died.

Prosecutors say they couldn’t charge Lane with murder because a coroner found no evidence the fetus lived outside the womb.

Sex harassment claims The former personal assistant to Robbie Williams has made claims of sexual harassment which Williams and his wife must answer to in court. Gilles De Bonfilhs said he was wrongfully dismissed after 60 days of work and sexually harassed

by Williams’ wife, Ayda Field. He claims Williams witnessed the abuse but failed to action to stop it. The couple have been married for six years and have two children.

They attempted to throw the case out by counter-suing based on “poor legal standing”, but the judge refused and now they must appear in court. The lawsuit states De Bonfilhs is suing the couple for “sexual harassment, failure to prevent sexual harassment, discrimination, breach of employment contract [and] fraud,” Women’s Weekly reports. The first hearing will take place in Los Angeles on August 19.

How long does it take for justice to be served?

wo years ago, Russell John Tully was a man known only to a few; today his name is recognised around New Zealand – for all the wrong reasons.

On September 1, 2014, our belief in Ashburton as a relatively safe place to live was shattered.

A gunman walked into our Work and Income offices, killed two women and attempted to harm others. He escaped, was hunted down and captured.

Russell John Tully has been charged with murder, attempted murder, possessing firearms and ammunition and setting a man trap. He’s spent the past 15 months in custody, at the taxpayers’ expense.

Since then the families of those killed or injured and the Ashburton community itself have been playing a waiting game as trial dates were set and reset, but after many false starts, the Tully trial is finally under way.

It’s a trial that will no doubt receive huge exposure in the media as did the event itself. The eyes of New Zealand were focused on Ashburton for all the wrong reasons and they will be again now as the trial runs its distance.

For the families of the Winz staff involved in this horrific event and for the greater Winz family, the trial will bring the trauma of those awful September days back to the front of their minds, but its conclusion will also allow those families and staff to achieve some kind of closure.

The Tully trial and the long path that’s been walked before it could begin, highlights the complexity of our legal system.

The delays have largely been driven by the accused and while any detail around those delays has been supressed, it’s clear that Tully and his rights have been the driver. And each of those delays, each of those false starts have been funded by the taxpayer. Each false start has created more stress, more pain for the victims’ families.

And that is wrong on every level.

Yes, every person accused of a crime is entitled to a fair trial, but too often it seems the rights of the accused over-ride the rights of the victims and their families.

And that’s never been demonstrated more clearly than in the trial of Russell John Tully.

YOUR VIEW Good infrastructure In the Ashburton Guardian on Monday, the Member of Parliament for Selwyn, Amy Adams, says the opening of the new Cashin Quay extension wharf will “secure Canterbury’s future growth”.

Although such infrastructure is essential for all exporters, the services provided by the Port of Lyttelton are no longer controlled by the Government on behalf of all citizens and, although National has the arrogance to suggest the Government deserves credit for Lyttelton’s progress, it has done little to actually assist it.

Rather the opposite; National should improve our road and rail network instead of continuing to supervise its continuing degradation.

We all need efficient and well maintained infrastructure. It is not just Auckland.

Tooth decay I agree with Michelle Nelson’s article on the dental health of our children. Tooth decay is increasing in our district and has done so since fluoride was removed from our water supply.

Don Church quotes the figures from the CDHB data stating that the number of children that were free of decay improved from 51.3 per cent to 52.4 per cent for five -year-olds during the period 2002 and 2013.

This is an improvement overall of only 1.1 per cent. Quite minimal when taking into account the increase in population.

I would like to point out that when fluoride was first introduced into the water supply in Grand Rapids, Michigan from

1945 to 1956 the dental decay rate dropped by more than 60 per cent. Studies in New Zealand showed a similar rate of reduction when fluoride was introduced into the water supply.

Research shows that water fluoridation is safe and effective.

Fluoride continues to this day to be the dental services’ main weapon in the battle against tooth decay.

At a rate of 0.7 to 1.0ppm in the water supply, teeth are formed resistant to tooth decay.

Along with brushing teeth twice a day, eating a healthy diet and timely check ups with a dental provider, fluoridation of the water supply has significant benefits to children’s teeth.

The Ministry of Health recommends community water fluoridation as a safe and effective means of improving oral health, so why doesn’t Ashburton listen?

Having worked in the school dental service in the ‘60s I have seen the difference that fluoride can make to children’s oral health.

Surely prevention is better than cure.

U

nderstandably, Winston Peters would not have wanted his name to be associated with a cyclone of such devastating proportions as that which hit Fiji and other islands earlier in the week. However, as a metaphor for the influence he still has in our immediate part of the world, which could yet become even greater, it is a suitable description.

After all, it wasn’t Cyclone John or Andrew and certainly not Metiria. The fact is that those three would very much like to have Winston on their side when the 2017 election approaches. They know he has cyclonic political potential, something they all lack “at this moment in time”.

One of the significant issues with a substantial bearing on that election is the current debate over the proposed changes to the Resource Management Act (RMA), that ball and chain, and grotesquely expensive piece of legislation, which hangs heavily on the shoulders of would-be improvement in the business of government in this country.

Despite it originally being trumpeted as the answer to all environmental matters, conscientiously considering any plan that might somehow, however far-fetched, impinge on any aspect of the environment, it has now become the barrier to progress and initiative.

So much so, that when the Government has on its books a piece of legislation it regards as truly important, it legislates to bypass the costly, time-serving tentacles of the RMA. It has, in fact, become a longserving burden of bureaucracy and a commercial entity of its own with, if not the catastrophic damage of a cyclone, certainly ramifications prejudicial to the wellbeing of citizens of Aotearoa, New Zealand, 2016.

Some cynical, though thoughtful, commentators, have described the act thus: “The RMA

Anyone who has attempted to make just a mild alteration to his home or property will vouch for the accuracy of that opinion.

A welcome report from that illustrious body, the OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) on integrating Environmentally and Economic Policies, has led the minister involved, the much-travelled, Dr Nick Smith, to explain: “This report highlights that high environmental standards do not have to mean high administrative costs ... We need to heed the advice from the OECD to reduce our environmental red tape and improve the business friendliness of our bureaucratic procedures.”

And a truer word was never spoken by a minister of the Crown.

But how do we bring about such a welcome change in attitude in the face of such entrenched positions by diehard

“environmentalists” who believe any such “watering down” of the legislation will lead, inevitably, to wrack, ruin and collapse?

In fact, it is some of National’s proposed changes to the RMA that have been watered down to suit the requirements of their two “sitting” Maori Party MPs on whom National depends for its future in office.

Enter stage Left (or Right – whichever seems the more relevant) Winston Peters. In his now almost legendary State of the Nation speech last month he expressed his concern for the on-going progress of National’s RMA Reform Bill and offered New Zealand First’s support for the amendments on the table providing all race-based references are removed from the bill.

Said “Cyclone” Winston: “We announce here and now that NZ First will ... move amendments to cut red tape and bring commonsense to the RMA on condition National will drop all provisions in the bill that provide separate rights based on race.”

In response to that, “Mere Breeze” John Key, in his custom-

ary pragmatic manner, said first, he was very serious about wanting real reform, and then, “what we need is 61-plus votes to get the bill out of the select committee and we are happy to work with any political party to make that happen”.

Significantly, he then added, “If he wants to support the National Government, we are more than happy to sit down with Mr Peters and discuss the matter.”

Do I conclude from that a burgeoning “Entente Cordiale”?

I rather think I do. Winston wins again.

Meanwhile, in another part of the body politic, prime ministers John (Key) and Malcolm (Turnbull) continue their ever-deepening friendship, which has led so far to Australian citizenship for 100,000 otherwise disenfranchised Kiwis resident in Australia for at least 15 years and to an invitation to Mr and Mrs Key to spend a comfy weekend at the Turnbulls’ Point Piper mansion.

So trans-Tasman relations seem to be booming, so much improved since “Speedo” Abbott left the scene.

Mid-term outlook for dairy positive

A Rabobank analyst told farmers attending the Lincoln University Dairy Farm Focus Day an additional 20 billion litres of milk will be required by 2020 to feed world demand.

Emma Higgins said the medium term outlook was “really positive”.

“We are expecting compound annual growth rates to sit above two per cent for that period of time.”

Ms Higgins said New Zealand was nearing the higher range of how much milk it could produce and Australia would be “lucky” if it could produce more.

“So some of that demand has to be met by our Northern Hemisphere counterparts. What that translates to is higher commodity prices which is really positive news.”

Rabobank was predicting whole milk powder prices would average around $US3500 by 2018 but were holding off predicting what level they may be at by 2020.

She said increased demand won’t necessarily come from China. “It will actually be from more broad based and developing economies like South East Asia.”

Geographically New Zealand was “very well” positioned to maximise on that market, she said.

Speaking on the current situation, Ms Higgins said pain had been felt asymmetrically.

“Prices for other farmers in other parts of the world have held up much better than down here in New Zealand.”

The high New Zealand dollar and the product mix that Kiwi farmers specialised in had been the main reasons for the low prices here, with the whole milk pow-

der market being the hardest hit.

Prices had also decreased because second tier purchasers were well covered for the second financial quarter in terms of inventory of powder on hand, she said.

“For 2016 a lot does depend on how quickly the brakes on production can be applied and in particular, in Europe.”

Ms Higgins said the Netherlands and Ireland were the main contributers to the global oversupply with the two countries producing 55 per cent of excess milk.

While China had “worked through” much of their inventory they still had an oversupply of domestic production, she said.

“But we are expecting them to re-enter the market this year.”

Although the current situation had been painful, farmers were going to be leaner and more efficient post downturn, she said.

He said a British exit from the EU could offer such an opportunity and could “heal a rift” with New Zealand that occurred when Britain became a member of European Economic Community in 1973.

Mr Peters also believes that New Zealand should take advantage of the troubles Russia is having with Europe and restore a full trading relationship with Russia.

Mr Peters’ endorsement of CER as a model for others is a shift in position – at the 2014 election his policy was to review all bilateral free trade agreements, including the Closer Economic Relations agreement with Australia, to ensure they were in New Zealand’s interest.

Speaking to an agriculturalrelated industries conference in Auckland today, Mr Peters backed an exit by Britain (“Brexit”) of the European Union – to be put to a

Winston Peters referendum on June 23 – saying Norway had shown that Britain could flourish outside the EU. Mr Peters noted that Conservative MP and London Mayor Boris Johnson supported an exit from the EU and had backed travel and work zones between Britain, New Zealand, Australia and Canada.

“Based on the highly successful Transtasman Travel Arrangement, it shows the opportunity

that is within our grasp,” Mr Peters said.

“While ‘Brexit’ is an opportunity for not just New Zealand businesses, product and people, it is an excellent opportunity to heal a rift dating back to 1973.”

He said the pursuit of a free trade deal with Europe was “a fiction” because Europe still had farm subsidies.

“New Zealand First believes our oldest and most successful trade agreement with Australia, CER, provides the ideal template for Closer Commonwealth Economic Relations, or CCER. He said it could become a model for a high quality future agreement not just with Britain but Canada, South Africa and India.

On the issue of Russia, Mr Peters said Prime Minister John Key had wrecked New Zealand’s trading relationship with Russia in asking exporters to show constraint in solidarity with Europe.

A free trade deal negotiated with Russia by former Trade Minister Tim Groser was put on ice in the wake of Russia annexing Crimea and subsequent sanctions that followed.

A Bay of Plenty businessman found guilty of $1.45 million worth of tax evasion offences has been jailed for four years nine months.

Ewan Malcolm Campbell, who appeared in the Tauranga District Court yesterday, was sentenced on 59 charges of evading or at-

tempting to evade the assessment or payment of tax.

Campbell’s offending spanned six years from 2008 to 2014, and related to GST, income tax PAYE payments and personal income tax evasion offences.

Judge John McDonald, who found Campbell guilty of the

charges following a two-day trial in November last year, delivered his reserved decision on December 14.

Judge McDonald sentenced Campbell despite the prisoner continuing to deny his offending, and maintaining his stance that he did not recognise the jurisdiction of the court.

EASY SUDOKU

Smoked chicken and walnut pesto fettuccine 1/2 C walnuts, lightly toasted large handful (approx 75g) of rocket leaves 1 large clove garlic, crushed 1/3 C grated parmesan cheese 1/3 C extra virgin olive oil salt to taste 400g fresh fettuccine 1 x Tegel manuka smoked chicken breast shaved parmesan for serving.

Lincoln University Dairy Farm’s survival budget is resulting in an “acceptable short-term survival” position but would not be sustainable, farmers were informed at a recent focus day on-farm.

At last week’s meeting farmers attending heard from managers that the initial budgeted farm working expenses of $4 per kilogram of milk solids (kgMS) for the 2015/16 season had been revised down to $3.85 following the declining pay-out.

A review of expenses resulted in a reduction of 20 cents per kgMS, primarily achieved by reducing maintenance fertiliser to half the normal levels and stopping all re-grassing.

Farmers were told the tight controls on spending resulted in an acceptable short-term position, but in future the farm would need to quickly return to a sustainable budget and level of ongoing investment to maintain the productive capacity of the farm.

Following the late September milk price increase to $4.60, the farm had considered adding back some of the initially budgeted maintenance expenditure but decided against it.

Since then deteriorating international market prices over the summer and the January decrease in forecast milk price had reinforced

Networks are critical to leadership, rural professionals learned from rural leader Jeanette Maxwell recently.

Speaking to the Rural Business Network meeting at Methven, the Mt Hutt sheep and beef farmer and former vet nurse talked about the importance of good friends and networks.

Sharing how she came to be the first woman elected to the Federated Farmer’s national board in 2011 and then the first women to be the lobby groups meat and fibre chairwoman, she paid tribute to her supportive husband and family.

Her road to leadership began in her local community at just 17 years old when she became a Ranger.

From Pippins to Guides and coordinating a jamboree, Jeanette soon found herself on nine committees and one board – but she still didn’t consider herself a leader.

“I’d take on jobs and if you asked me I’d do it.”

It was Federated Farmers that drew her in to higher leadership when the North Canterbury branch came knocking in 2006 to ask her to do some work with Environment Canterbury (ECan).

The Kellogg Rural Leadership Programme followed as did her involvement with Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers.

She was also involved during traumatic times for the wool industry – reflecting on how it was one of the few commodities sold in New Zealand today that had no levy organisation representing it even though it was worth $30 to $40 million a year.

Today, she said, coarse wool was receiving some of the highest prices ever with lambs’ wool trading at $5.80 to $6.20 per kilogram.

Jeanette Maxwell when she was selected for FAME (Food, Agribusiness, Marketing and Experience) course. On a trip through the US and Europe she was to learn much about agricultural supply chains, markets and governance co-operative structures.

After visiting Europe Jeanette understood why subsidies for farming are in existence, even if she didn’t agree with them.

“World War One, the depression and World War Two meant food security was critical. They are very protective of that … we have never had starvation here.”

It was to change her viewpoint on the sheep and beef markets on return to the farm in New Zealand.

“You start to understand the game and start to know how to market … this is what we have so suck it up Princess, let’s play the game and put into the market what they want.”

In that same year she also became the first female on the executive of Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers when she became the meat and fibre chairperson as well as being the first female to be elected on the national board.

Today she continues to advise Federated Farmers and is an executive member of the Fertiliser Quality Council, as well as inspiring new emerging rural leaders.

■ WHEAT & WHEELS RALLY

Rare gems on display F

or both those who went to the first Wheat & Wheels Rally three years ago and for others who were unable to attend, it’s a dream come true.

Those who were there last time say it was great.

Others heard about it.

People in either camp have hoped another rally would be staged and their wish is about to become reality.

Peter Butterick’s farm at 580 Christys Road, Wakanui, is always a busy place, a hive of activity.

On April 2 and 3 it will be even busier when Peter again provides the venue for a Wheat & Wheels rally, this year featuring tracks and trucks of all types and ages.

In fact it is likely to be the largest display of these types of vehicle ever seen together in our district.

And what’s more there will also be classic, veteran and vintage cars with quite an emphasis on military vehicles, armour, weapons and memorabilia.

Some of the machinery will be huge, some smaller, and many of the exhibits are not often, if ever, on public display.

The enthusiastic owners who are keen to share their interest are bringing these vehicles from near and far.

Local man Cliff Begg, who is a member of the organising committee, doesn’t have to travel too far to the rally, which is handy because he and his wife Cindy will be taking six exhibits; two trucks, two tractors and two military vehicles.

Their two Bedford trucks 1975 and 1976 models - were purchased for use on and off the farm. Repowered with Isuzu engines, they have been and still are good strong reliable workhorses.

The tractors entered by the Beggs are a little older.

One is their fastidiouslyrestored 1934 Case L, which has special significance because it was purchased by Cliff’s late father Les when he took up a farm on his return home after serving overseas during World War 2.

And the other is their immaculate 1944 McCormack Deering WD6.

The badging denotes the McCormack Deering runs on diesel, which it does but it is slightly unusual because it relies on petrol for starting and stopping the motor.

Both tractors go well and while these days they enjoy well-earned retirement, in the past they have done a power of work.

The Begg family name is synonymous with farming in Mid Canterbury and for Cliff it’s been a life-time career.

For Cindy, who says “I was a city girl”, the involvement has been a little shorter.

So it’s understandable they are such keen supporters on the Wheat & Wheels Rally.

But how did the involvement with military vehicles come in?

Cliff says it goes back to the fact his father and other family members, including his uncles, were members of the Canterbury Yeomanly Cavalry before serving overseas.

The Beggs have memorabilia handed down from Cliff’s father including some of his uniform.

With this background and having always been keen on machinery and cars, especially vintage models, it was a natural for Cliff to think of owning military vehicles and the two he will be

taking to the rally are particularly interesting.

The 1942 flathead (side valve) Ford V8 was one of 10 brand new identical vehicles brought into New Zealand as army staff cars.

Assembled in Canada, these cars were built right hand drive and were sent to military bases around the country.

Cliff’s car and one other came to Burnham, where it continued to be based during all its military service.

The Queen rode in the car during an official visit to Burnham Camp.

After an honourable discharge from the army, the car endured some mixed fortunes, and could easily have suffered the same fate of the other nine which no longer exist.

It came perilously close to that fate, but thankfully it has been restored and is now not only the last survivor of the 10, but is also believed to be the only 1942 model of its type anywhere in New Zealand.

Other Ford V8 enthusiasts who previously thought there were no examples in this country queried Cliff, but after looking under the bonnet confirmed the car’s pedigree.

The Ford’s 100-horsepower Mercury motor which drives through a three-speed column change gearbox provides swift and smooth acceleration.

In fact Cliff is rather proud his car has passed the Henry Ford test for smooth running.

Twice!

The test, which was devised by the legendary Henry Ford himself, involved placing a coin on its edge on the manifold of his V8 motors when running as they left the company’s production line.

If the coin fell off, the motor was considered out of balance and was sent back.

The motor in Cliff’s car passed the test back in 1942, and it has done so again following a rebuild.

Camouflage-coloured paint still covers the car’s bodywork but the bumpers and other trim previously blackened to prevent reflection and detection have now been chromed.

The Beggs’ other military vehicle is a 1982 ex-NZ Army Landrover.

Apart from both being ex-Army it would be easy to think that’s where the similarity ends because the two vehicles are quite different; one is a car and the other a truck.

But they have a couple of things

Movie likely to revive memories A

n enduring memory from Ashburton College in its early days was the rather incredible sight of teachers racing up and down Cass Street between the junior and senior sites.

Bedford C A vans were used and teachers alighted clutching at their files, after screeching to a stop which seemed to force the sliding doors open.

The Lady in the Van is a comedy drama movie based on the true story of

an eccentric, transient lady who lived in a dilapidated van which parked in a suburban London driveway for 15 years.

What’s that got to do with a memory from early College days?

Answer: Veteran actress Maggie Smith is cast as the lady living in a Bedford CA van, just like the old school vehicles.

It’s a role which is in stark contrast to her part as the Dowager Countess of

Grantham in Downton Abbey.

The screening of The Lady in the Van at the Ashburton Regent Cinema at 6pm on Sunday February 28 will be a fundraiser for the Ashburton Citizens Association.

As well as being an opportunity to assist a local organisation while enjoying a great movie for some it may also revive a few funny memories from the old school days.

Both are powered by V8 motors – the Landrover’s power plant is a 3.5 litre Rover motor – and like the Ford it was based at Burnham.

Loaded with radio gear, the Landrover drew a lot of power, hence it has a 24-volt system, six batteries and a 100-watt generator.

Cliff says the Landrover is a great vehicle to drive and is ideal for towing.

The Landrover is in original condition and the log books which accompanied it provide an interesting insight into its history.

The Beggs have owned the Ford staff car since 2003 and the Landrover has now been its stablemate for 10 years.

Cliff Begg is one of those people for whom a repeat of the Wheat & Wheels Rally is the realisation of a dream.

He’s glad it’s happening because he knows the rally will be a win, win, win.

Exhibitors will have a great time, spectators are in for a treat and the proceeds will be going to a very worthwhile charity – Ronald McDonald House in Christchurch – which received a donation of $20,000 after the last rally.

Ashburton Garden Club The first meeting for 2016 was held at the Senior Citizen Centre on February 18 at 2pm with 33 members and visitor.

Following the normal business, we welcomed our Guest Speaker, Deidre Moses, the founder of Fruit Fund who recognized the need for fresh food for children in the local pre-schools, Kindies and Schools.

Ashburton Horticultural Society Another very memorable Annual Garden Competition culminated in the Awards Evening held this week. After a short address, Mayor Angus McKay presented the Awards assisted by President Joy Jaine. Chief Judge from Christchurch Beautifying Society, Brian Lovelock, addressed the gathering and commented on the fantastic standard of this year’s entries. He was impressed by the balance, colour and range of plant material and advised that any criticism is constructive and only designed to assist future planning. Joy Jaine thanked all persons who contributed to a successful judging day. From the floor, Daphne Allison thanked the Horticultural Society for continuing to run the Garden Competition. He explained how he came to be talking to our club meeting starting from growing on the family farm near Methven and his schooling at Lyndhurst and Methven. He attended Telford before working on the farm which he took over just before the high interest years of the mid-eighties.

He visited Tasmania on an YFC exchange and spent time in Queenstown (Tasmania) which was a copper mining centre but mining had devastated a huge area of native bush. This sparked his interest in environmental issues. He became involved in national politics and stood for Parliament twice. In 1998 he was elected to the Canterbury Regional Council where he served till becoming Mayor in 2010.

He recently visited Puyang City in China, population over 5 million, where when it was decided that all motor bikes and scooters be electric rather than petrol

Allenton takes triples crown

The Bowls Mid Canterbury Champions of Champions Tournament was won by Allenton at the MSA Green on Sunday.

The team of Bob Holdom, Alex Crawford and Bruce White downed Ashburton, MSA and Hampstead to take the coveted triples title in perfect conditions for bowls.

Mr Holdom believes a strong team ethic contributed heavily to the Allenton trio’s win, and credited the quality of the MSA surface for a fine day’s play.

“It’s pretty serious stuff when you’re playing for Mid Canterbury titles and I think we played well as a team, that’s the important thing,” he said.

“Also, it was perfect conditions and a very good green, they’re all good in Mid Canterbury, but that was as good as any.” powered, it was achieved in a year! He noted that the Chinese know NZ produces quality food which they need and are prepared to pay for.

Ashburton MSA Petanque Club Sunday 14th was our give it a go day and we had in excess of 30 members, partners, and public gather round to watch or play Petanque on the shingle path beside the car park. It was a lovely setting on a very hot day, with us taking advantage of the dabbles shade given by the beautiful trees in the domain. Afterward we sat around enjoying a picnic afternoon tea.

Last week-end 7 Ashburton players took part in the South Island Triples Tournament played in Christchurch. 18 teams took part and Richard Browne (Ashburton) Brian Westerbeek (Christchurch) and Neville Frost (Dunedin) succeeded in being runners up in the Championship.

While the 2 teams of Ashburton players didn’t manage a placing, they gave several teams a good challenge, and gained a lot of experience by playing in a top competition such as this. Over the 3 days they were pleased with the improvement in their performance.

The umpiring of course was very strict, and some of the finer details of this aspect of the game were learned.

A very enjoyable and worthwhile weekend for all concerned.

Ashburton Pakeke Lions President Ray Harraway welcomed a good attendance of members, District Governor Fern Blake and visitors to the February meeting of Pakeke Lions, held in the peaceful setting of Ashburton Bowling Club rooms. Lion Graeme Neale advised of the Heads up for Kids old coin collection trail to be soon held in the town centre. 2nd VP Lion Joe advised of two upcoming outings to the Court Theatre April 21 and a picnic and tour of the Mt Somers area, March 20.

3rd VP Jim talked of how Pakeke Lions could develop a worthwhile relationship with a local primary school.

Guest speaker Peter Livingston provided a humorous and entertaining time interspersed with musical items assisted by a talented young lady. His theme Taking Opportunities was most appropriate and well received. Evening concluded with Tail Twister Lion Ron and the National Anthem.

Plains Ladies Probus Club There was a good attendance for the February Meeting and Joan welcomed members from other clubs. Birthdays, anniversaries and sympathy to Cath Bassett in the loss of her husband. Age Concern are holding a day at the Ashburton Racecourse on 3rd March with many stalls etc. Subs are due at the Annual Meeting in March. The Movie for next month is “The Lady in the Van” on the 2nd March at 11 am. Sue Jackson, one of our members was our mini speaker who took us on a fabulous holiday to Germany. Staying with students that they have hosted here, they settled in after a very long trip. Hoping for a white Christmas they explored the sites and all the markets etc. Enjoyed all the different foods and music playing. Even though there was no snow they had a marvellous trip. With her husband Garry as a young couple moved to Takaka and brought a farm on a isolated hill they named “Rocklands.” For sixty years they have lived and farmed the property and in that time raised a family and she has written for magazines and was a nurse. Hard Country is her entertaining story of decades of living their encounters along the way. Robin has a great outlook on life and was very interesting. Next meeting, AGM 21st March.

Ashburton Electronic Organ and Keyboard Club Lorraine welcomed us to the first gathering for the year. Many old members were present also two new members. Welcome Cushla and Peter. The programme was arranged by the Committee.

Wairoa test for talented Bary mare

Four Jennian Homes Ashburton swimmers flew the flag for Mid Canterbury at the 2016 New Zealand Junior Championships in Auckland last weekend.

Twelve-year-olds Bree Middleton, Cameron Slee, Isabelle Wilson and Courtney Elliot ended their respective junior swimming careers on a high, with age group competition on the horizon next year.

The foursome competed at the Sir Owen G Glenn National Aquatic Centre and managed personal bests and a silver medal.

Slee had two top 10 placings; seventh in the 50m breaststroke and sixth in the 100m breaststroke.

Slee was also part of the Canterbury regional team that claimed a silver medal in the boys’ 12-year and under 200m medley regional relay event, along with Matthew Gray, Taiko TorepeOrmsby and Thomas MacGibbon.

Meanwhile, Wilson made a solid return from a recent shoulder injury to post a personal best in the 50m butterfly, while Bree Middleton and Courtney Elliot achieved personal bests in the 400m freestyle and 200m freestyle respectively.

John Bary is keen to see if the genuine mare Xcuses Xcuses can add another string to her bow at Wairoa today.

The Hastings trainer, who has a number of in-form chances at the meeting, will move the four-yearold out of her comfort zone in the Wairoa Businesses Handicap.

“It’s a bit of an experiment to step her up over a bit more distance, even though it’s only 1300 metres but it will tell us whether we can stretch her out to 1400,” Bary said.

Xcuses Xcuses has fashioned a consistent record up to 1200m with two wins and six placings and at her last two starts she has finished in the money in better quality Rating 75 fields than she will front up against today.

Meanwhile, Bary has had a change of heart with The Bandito who will contest the Betavet Dash off the back of an unplaced run last time out at Te Rapa where he raced three wide without cover.

Hilfenhaus retires Former Test bowler Ben Hilfenhaus has announced his retirement from first-class cricket. The 32-year-old Tasmanian yesterday said he would continue to play short-form cricket including Big Bash League with the Melbourne Stars, but years of playing have taken a toll on his body. Right-arm paceman Hilfenhaus, who last wore the baggy green in 2012, has played just one Sheffield Shield match for Tasmania this season as he struggles to find form after returning early from England’s county season with a hip injury.

Leaders circle at Fast Fours Neil McCann and Peter Kirwan the KirMac team - are new jointleaders of the Terrace Downs Resort Fast Fours alongside Scruff & Co, after beating Croziers Turkeys 3-0 on Tuesday evening.

Neil McCann was too consistent for Andrew Tindall, winning in straight sets, but Phil Crozier stunned Peter Kirwan 4-2 in their first set, before Kirwan came back strongly in the second and third.

The doubles were hard-fought, but KirMac eventually took out a 4-2, 4-2 victory.

Scruff & Co locked horns with

ConAid, and after the singles, it was one match-all, with Rhys Cromie beating Connor Brosnahan 4-1, 4-2, and Aidan Mitchell turning the tables to down Peter Leonard in straight sets. Leonard and Cromie were all business in the deciding doubles, however, showing no mercy in their 4-1, 4-1 wins.

In the opposite section one match, TB Team faced BarryJase, where a couple of young debutants helped out on the night.

Dallas Scott turned out for BarryJase against Maisie Looij for the TB Team.

Scott was the victor, while team captains Tony Brosnahan and Jason Feutz slugged it out on the adjacent court. Brosnahan snuck in on the sudden death point of the tiebreak to take the first set 4-3 (5-4 in the tiebreak), but Feutz dominated the second set, breaking Brosnahan’s serve at 3-2 to win the set 4-2.

In the deciding set, Brosnahan’s determination was evident, taking the set 4-1 to level the tie one match apiece.

The pivotal doubles went to TB Team’s Brosnahan and Looij, 4-2, 4-1.

The team standings have KirMac and Scruff & Co on six points and BarryJase, TB Team and ConAid on five points, while Croziers Turkeys are poised to make their move from the bottom in the two subsequent weeks.

In Section two, the MissHits ladies and the Young Guns continue to set the pace with maximum points after another couple of impressive wins, while MatJade, consisting of Jade Brosnahan and Mathieu Lucas, were downed 3-0 by Bryn Looij and Nic Thomassen.

Schools battle for Gillette Cup chance Patience was rewarded when the drizzle finally stopped to allow local rivals Ashburton College and Mount Hutt contest their Gillette Cup clash at the Ashburton Domain on Tuesday.

The match was reduced to a Twenty20 tie due to time constraints, and, with conditions favouring the bowlers, Ashburton College skipper Sam Hall had no hesitation in putting Mount Hutt in to bat after winning the toss.

Hall’s call proved a good one with plenty of seam movement early on.

Mount Hutt College’s opening partnership had put on seven when Gareth Hunt dismissed Douglas Richards (0).

Robert McDonald then entered the fray but could only muster a single before Will Graham sent him back to the pavilion.

Opener Smith (7) had hit some nice shots before being dismissed

by Hunt’s delivery that moved substantially to find the stumps.

Louis McDonald then hit a delightful boundary over the head of mid-off, before being bowled off his pads by Hunt. Smith, Naholo in attack All Blacks Ben Smith and Waisake Naholo, plus speedster Patrick Osborne will spearhead the Highlanders attack against the Blues at Eden Park tomorrow.

The trio are part of a powerful line-up named by coach Jamie Joseph as the Highlanders embark on the defence of their title.

Lima Sopoaga, unlucky not to make the World Cup for the All Blacks, will call the shots at No10, with Aaron Smith, considered one of the best halfbacks in the world, inside him at No9.

Openside flanker Shane Christie will co-captain the team with Ben Smith.

The 69-year-old, who has watched the Blues train at least twice this week, coached the Kiwis and Queensland State of Origin team in the 1980s and 90s, and is a former Manly Sea Eagles chief executive who appears to have clicked with Umaga.

“He’s got a really exciting and positive view about how the game should be played,” Lowe said. “It’s fantastic watching him come along.”

Lowe met Umaga properly when he made a presentation to Counties rugby club coaches last year and has kept in touch since.

Aussies want dynasty as top Test side Steve Smith wants to carve out a dynasty atop the Test rankings and Brendon McCullum senses Australia have the depth to do it.

Skipper Smith finished 53 not out as Australia completed a 2-0 series win over New Zealand on Wednesday, backing up their Wellington waltz with a seven-wicket victory in Christchurch.

Sport Girls tear up track

Mid Canterbury Mountain Bike Club hosted its inaugural women’s event on Tuesday evening in fine conditions.

Eight ladies took to the reserve on the north side of the Ashburton River Bridge for the social race.

Race organiser Neil Wylie said the club expects the number of participants to increase for the next women’s event, which is likely to be held on a weekend next month.

“We’ve had a lot of interest, so we will look to hold another next month at some point,” he said.

“It was definitely a success, a lot of people were unavailable, so I think we could get up to about 20 next time.”

The fortnightly Chocolate Fish race series will return this Tuesday.

McCullum memories last forever When Brendon McCullum wakes up today, he’ll be thinking of the next stage of his life.

Asked how he might be feeling, he gave it a moment’s thought then replied with a grin, “dusty”.

As McCullum put it, he had “14 years to make up” and had a few drinks planned with both teammates and opponents.

But there were no tears, as you’d expect from the man from South Dunedin, and he knows the time is right to go.

“I came to that realisation when I made the decision and I knew I could steel myself for another couple of challenges,” he said.

“And now I walk away comfortable with my decision and looking forward to the next stage of my life and spending some time with my family and taking up some other challenges as well.”

McCullum thinks the New Zea-

land team are ready for a new leader, “and a slightly different direction”. His hope was that he had brought fun and enjoyment back into the setup but acknowledged there were times when the players felt “vulnerable” under his direction. It came with risks – often with spectacular results, but equally some let-downs – and this was illustrated in his final test.

His fastest test century on Saturday was a wonderful way to bow out, in the individual sense. Losing the match, and series, wasn’t the ideal departure but “the right team won”.

McCullum’s final match produced a series of standing ovations, a guard of honour from the Australian opponents and just finishing up at home – even if Christchurch is his adopted home – mattered.

“You never foresee that that

level of respect that Steve Smith and the Australian team showed with that guard of honour would ever eventuate,” he said. “Having said that, it was a nice touch and very nice touch from our boys today as we went out on the park, in the changing room, away from the cameras.

“We had a very similar guard of honour, I guess, which was very nice. Memories which I’ll take with me forever.”

As McCullum addressed media for the final time, perhaps the most revealing thing was when he pinpointed the time New Zealand changed as a team, reset their parameters and how they wanted to play the game, how they wanted to make a difference. It also made them the flagbearers for playing cricket with both a smile and soul.

It came in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, late in 2014. It

was a test against Pakistan which no one wanted to play, in the immediate aftermath of the death of Australian player Phil Hughes, who was struck on the head in a Sheffield Shield match.

It was a match played with complete abandon. Cricket was secondary. New Zealand won by a mile but, within those five days, was born a new attitude.

“Sharjah was a huge moment for us as a team. That was a catalyst for a lot of the free-flowing cricket we’ve seen, without the inhibitions of worrying about what may go wrong. We almost stumbled, through the tragedy, on a style of play for us which kind of worked.

“When you’ve got to ask a team to play a game during those circumstances, I think it galvanised us. I look back proudly on how our guys stuck together.”
