Talley’s case heads to Supreme Court The legal argument over a workplace accident that paralysed an Ashburton woman is on a path to the Supreme Court.

Talley’s operates the vegetable processing plant where the accident happened in May 2015 and is appealing a Court of Appeal decision over a charge laid under the Health and Safety Act. The charge was dismissed by a district court judge then reinstated by the High Court; Talley’s appeal to the Court of Appeal over the High Court decision was dismissed in December last year.

The woman was injured when she was struck by empty bins falling from a forklift at the company’s Ashburton plant.

Worksafe confirmed in January that the Court of Appeal decision meant that its prosecution of Talley’s could continue in the district court, subject to further appeal.

But the workplace health and safety regulator said yesterday Talley’s had sought leave to appeal the Court of Appeal decision to the Supreme Court.

Worksafe charged Talley’s with breaching health and safety legislation in rela-

tion to the woman’s injury but its prosecution practices came under scrutiny in the legal process that followed.

It said no bad faith was intended by not supplying a necessary level of detail with the original charging document and it had since changed its practices.

Talley’s is asking the Supreme Court to consider whether the Court of Appeal erred in not dismissing the defective charging documents and whether the Court of Appeal erred in not considering the prosecution’s actions amounted to an abuse of process.

On climate change action map

Most of her councillors may not have agreed, but Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel has added her name to the growing list of mayors presenting a united front on finding ways to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ) developed the declaration in 2017 following an agreement by mayors and chairs in 2015 that there was an urgent need for responsive leadership and a holistic approach to climate change.

From the outset she urged her councillors to support the declaration which is aspirational rather than binding, but they voted by a majority against putting Ashburton’s name on the list of supporters.

Instead, they wanted council staff to prepare a climate change document that focused on the likely impact and possible mitigation for the Ashburton District.

The first draft of this has been debated.

At that time Favel said she could still sign the document on her own behalf and did so in late Decem-

ber. Ashburton is now one of 56 local authorities who have given their support to the declaration.

Twenty two are yet to sign.

“As mayor I try to be democratic, but I never expected councillors to say no, don’t sign this,” she said.

“I was always free to sign because it is a leaders’ declaration, not a council declaration.”

The gist of the document was that councils worked with the government to create the best process and options, Favel said.

“We all need to be doing something whether we’re a household

with recycling or a bigger company. It’s about working in a unified manner to do the best we can Signing was about local government leaders standing together,” she said.

Ashburton was at the head of the field when it came to developing its own climate change policy, Favel said.

The policy will be for the council internally and Favel said she was pleased with the stage its development was at.

Several Canterbury councils – Hurunui, Timaru, Mackenzie and Waimate – have yet to sign the

LGNZ declaration, while Ashburton had both signed and begun working on its own policy, she said.

Under the LGNZ declaration council’s commit to developing and implementing their own action plans that will promote walking, cycling, public transport and other low carbon transport options; work to improve the resource efficiency and health of homes, businesses and infrastructure in our district; and support the use of renewable energy and uptake of electric vehicles.

Methven Medical Centre bursting at the seams

Methven Medical Centre may have to be extended again due to exploding growth, just seven years after it was last built onto.

Population growth in the farm and ski town means the centre is bursting at the seams.

A dental practice based at the centre has had to move out, taking its services back to Ashburton, and visiting specialists such as an osteopath, dietician and podiatrist are having to squeeze in to a spare room when there is one available.

An intervention counsellor based at the centre has temporarily shifted as well, now holding sessions at the Plunket rooms.

An extension in 2012 doubled the Methven Medical Centre footprint, and it was believed at the time this would see the centre into the future.

However, centre doctors now think at least another three more consulting rooms may be required, to add to the six there is currently.

Spokesperson Gayle O’Duffy said historically January was the quietest month, with people away on holiday and harvest under way,

but this January consultations had been up 11 per cent on January last year.

“And last January was the busiest January ever,” O’Duffy said.

There were 4200 patients enrolled at the practice, almost 1000 more than 10 years ago.

The centre has increased the services it offers as well, meaning plenty of work for the six doctors and nurse practitioner on site. They work up to 0.6 full-time equivalent positons each, and the centre’s commitment to part-time work means it can easily attract doctors seeking quality of life.

“We have worked really hard on the culture of the practice, if we want people to come here to work we want it to be a really nice place to come to,” O’Duffy said.

The medical centre building is owned by the Ashburton District Council, and doctors are in dialogue with the council on a possible expansion in future.

It was unknown at this stage which way the centre would expand. There was room available to go out to the rear or side, or up with an additional storey.

Dr Gayle O’Duffy says enrolled patient numbers have increased by almost one third over the past 10 years.

Proposed taxes in spotlight

Six of the eight taxes proposed last week by the Government’s Tax Working Group will impact the primary sector, says National’s agriculture spokesman Nathan Guy. Guy and five other MPs that are part of the party’s primary industries caucus committee, including Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon, were in Mid Canterbury on Friday to see first-hand the district’s pioneering managed aquifer recharge project and to visit agribusiness Midlands Oils.

Guy said farmers and other Mid Canterbury people would be worried not only about the proposed capital gains tax, but also the proposed water tax and fertiliser tax.

“They should know that the National Party will repeal a capital gains tax if we get in in 2020 and Mid Canterbury people should also know we will be fighting hard to do all we can to stop it.”

The Tax Working Group said an estimated $8 billion would be raised over five years through its recommendations, which were more aimed at short-term speculation.

Guy said people could exert pressure on New Zealand First leader Winston Peters – who says farmers won’t be unfairly impacted – but he doubted it would make a difference.

“He went into the coalition with Labour and the Greens knowing that more taxes were just around the corner. I don’t think Winston Peters will be a solution when he

is part of the problem.”

Guy, Falloon and fellow MPs Maureen Pugh, David Bennett, Hamish Walker and Matt King started yesterday in Timaru and visited the Opuha Dam before heading north into Mid Canterbury.

At the site of the first managed aquifer recharge (MAR) on Frasers Road, the project’s spokesman farmer Peter Lowe said there were now 16 MAR sites around the district, though most were in the testing phase to track how effectively water infiltrated underground aquifers.

The original MAR site was not operating yesterday because water is needed for irrigation; unused water on the shoulder of the season and in winter is pooled on site and allowed to filter down.

The result is a bubble of water introduced to aquifers that raises groundwater levels and dilutes nitrate concentrations.

Lowe said the district’s MAR scheme was New Zealand’s biggest environmental project.

“It is about keeping Mid Canterbury going, without cutting everyone’s throat. It is a sensible solution for Mid Canterbury and we have learned a lot in the site as well as raising groundwater levels by 18 metres downstream.”

Nitrate concentrations had fallen from 14ppm to 2 in monitoring bores as the plume of water spread underground.

Lowe said MAR was just one tool to be used to help manage water quality and quantity and farmers were also doing their bit on-farm.

Ashburton River mouth guardians could help raise awareness of the importance of the area, it has been suggested.

The idea came from a meeting of recreational users and community members at the river mouth last weekend.

Environment Canterbury surveyed users over the summer and is developing a management plan for the area.

Those at the meeting also wanted to ensure important shorebird nesting and feeding areas were not disturbed at specific times of the year, as well as providing an area for 4WDs and motorbikes to play.

A Geraldine-based landscape architect will now take these ideas and others from landowners, runanga, and technical experts to develop draft management concepts which balance the views and values of users and the natural environment.

These draft concepts will then be shared with relevant groups in April before a management strategy is developed in the middle of this year.

Donna Lill, who led the meeting on behalf of Environment Canterbury, said there was a wide range of views shared on topics such as access and protecting native wildlife.

“The freedom and ease of access to the area were very important to many people, but others were concerned about the risk vehicles, people and dogs can pose to vulnerable bird species that nest and live there.

“Some people felt that a management strategy for the area would help to address these threats while others saw more management as a threat to the freedom of access that they currently enjoy,” she said.

At the meeting participants also had a chance to share their ideas on how the area should be managed and what values were important to them.

Globe trip receives boost

Fifteen performers from the Big Little Theatre Company have received a big boost towards their goal of studying at the Globe Theatre in London.

The Masonic Lodges of the Ashburton District have donated a combined $9068 to the students.

Past-master of the Ashburton Lodge Ken Borland said instead of the usual scholarships and fundraising concert they host each year, they would instead host the concert to raise funds for the students.

“We were able to get sponsorship for the concert and through that we were able to raise $6000 and then we applied to the Midlands Masonic Charitable Trust and they donated $200 per student bringing it up to $3000 and getting us to the final total,” he said.

“We were really pleased that would could make a contribution like that. They performed at the concert and were most impressive.”

A tourist from the United Kingdom died at a Coromandel beach on Saturday following a “water incident”. In a statement, police said Andrew Massey from Kent died after he got into trouble while swimming with family members at Ocean Beach, Tairua. The 68-yearold was brought to shore and CPR was attempted but he was unable to be resuscitated.

Jetboat crash One person has died and another has been airlifted to hospital after a jetboat crash north of Wanaka. It is the second serious jetboat accident in Central Otago in as many days. A St John spokeswoman said one person in a moderate condition had been airlifted to Dunedin Hospital following yesterday’s crash. Police and emergency services rushed to the Hawea Flat area at 1.30pm. It is believed the crash happened on the Clutha River.

Survey seeks input on justice system A new survey has been launched to allow victims and survivors of crimes to allow them to voice their own opinions on the country’s ‘broken’ criminal justice system and how it can be fixed, says justice minister Andrew Little.

The survey has been developed by the Chief Victims Advisor to the Government, Dr Kim McGregor, and her steering group of victim advocates and academics.

The findings of the survey will inform Dr McGregor’s advice to the Government and the Hapaitia te Oranga Tangata – Safe and Effective Justice programme.

“Fixing the criminal justice system means putting victims and

survivors at the heart of change.

We must have fewer victims of crime, who are better supported,” he said.

“We know that many victims feel let down by the current system, and that they find it difficult to navigate their way to justice and restoration.

“That’s not good enough. We are working hard to learn from the lessons of the past.

“I have asked Dr McGregor to lead this programme of work, and specifically to conduct this survey, so we can fix the system and ensure victims achieve justice without feeling re-victimised by the process.”

The Chief Victims Advisor, who will provide victim-centric recommendations, is an independent ministerial advisor appointed by, and accountable to, the Minister of Justice.

McGregor’s role is to focus on identifying themes and areas for improvement for victims in the justice sector.

“The survey is an opportunity for victims of crime to tell us their views on the criminal justice system, what works and what doesn’t, and how they believe it can be improved,” McGregor said.

“It is one strand of a wider range of initiatives underway to

hear and respond to the voices of survivors in our communities. As well as the survey, I have hosted two pre-Summit forums and I hosted a panel on victims’ issues at the Criminal Justice Summit.

“Next steps include workshops and face-to-face meetings with victims around the country as I continue to gather information about gaps in the system and ideas for reform, so I can prepare my recommendations.”

Shear for Life a huge success

Champion shearers, All Black legends, more than 3000 shorn sheep and plenty of money raised for charity along the way is leading to organisers labelling the first Shear for Life event a success.

Held at the Ewing Family Woolshed near Hinds on Saturday, champion shearers from around New Zealand came together to lend their skills to the event which was raising funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation, the Cancer Society and the Breast Cancer Foundation.

Organiser Sandra Curd was pleased with how the event ran, with the target of 3000 sheep being shorn between 8am and 4pm being met.

“The event went very well and there was a good flow of people around the day,” she said.

“The weather didn’t play a part and it was good to see a few families there as well.

“The shearers were top quality and we had the special guests like Buck Shelford and Brian Lochore and that went down really well.”

Curd said the unique nature of bringing champion male and female shearers together added to the event, along with their commitment to the event.

“They made a huge commitment to the event and they didn’t even hesitate when

they were asked, it is pretty inspirational,” she said.

“Annie Bonifant from the local Cancer Society was really impressed and Buck Shelford was so impressed he said he had been to many cancer fundraising events but nothing of this nature.

“It just showed a good strong rural spirit to come together and make it happen.

“The support of the community and businesses in town has been amazing, we also asked for a gold coin on entry but people far exceeded that and in the auction some of the items went for well beyond their value.”

The idea came about after organiser Rocky Bull and mates Alan Bramley (Bimbo) and Steven Lynch (Dixy) were winding down after a hard day in the shed. They poured a beer, started yarning and decided it was time to get some of their old mates together. A few beers later and that reunion had morphed into a get together that might raise a few dollars for charity.

The idea sounded simple. Get a big group of over 50 shearers together, shear a certain number of sheep during a day and raise a bit of money for cancer support groups.

Bull asked a few mates if they were willing to come on board, they asked their mates and overnight he had lists of shearers, rousies, shed hands and supporters who wanted to be part of the event.

Gaming machine profits help 11 community groups Primary school children around the Ashburton District have been the big winners in the latest grants round from the Ashburton Trust and Lion Foundation.

The trusts continue their support of the district’s learn to swim programmes, pledging more than $76,000 towards subsidising lessons for children at schools enrolled in the Canterbury West Coast Sports Trust Mid Canterbury programme.

As well as teaching youngsters to swim, the programme also gives them survival skills to ensure they can keep themselves safe if they’re involved in a water related incident.

The other big winner in the February grants round was Ashburton Borough School.

The school received $60,000 for Chromebooks and chairs.

The Mid Canterbury Mountain Bike Club received $42,771 to further develop the Ashburton River Trail and Skills Park.

This River Trail Loop can attract up to 250 riders of all ages on a good day and up to 30 users at a time on the Skills Park, with participation extending to include female and family members over the last three years.

The Skills Park has been a drawcard for children and youth, and has helped increase the number of Ashburton students

competing in regional and national mountain biking events.

The funds will be used to install carpark lighting, bike wash facilities, balancing features and drinking fountains in addition to trail work and landscaping with native plants.

Funding for the grants comes from gaming machines operating in Ashburton Trust premises and $263,884 was distributed to 11 organisations with this round of applications.

Grants for the period from April 1, 2018 now total in excess of $1.3m, spread across a wide range of organisations supporting the community, sports, and education and health initiatives.

Changing lives of strangers Organ donation is very much a part of Shanan Bailey’s life. She has been the recipient of a live donor kidney and on her father’s death, his family decided to donate his cornea for transplant. She talks to reporter Sue Newman about the life changing impact organ donation has on people’s lives.

In 2016 Shanan Bailey was fortunate to receive a kidney from a live donor, a friend she’d known for many years.

am Bailey died in January, but out of the sorrow that surrounded his death, daughter Shanan knows her father’s death has also changed the lives of two strangers.

The 73-year-old was in poor health and suffered a massive stroke. He was on life support in Christchurch Hospital’s intensive care unit until family arrived, but when it became clear he would not survive, Shanan and her brother and sister knew there was just one outcome their dad would have wanted.

“The doctor came in and basically said he was dying. I interrupted him and said is there any way we can donate his organs,” she said.

“The whole room just stopped.

I beat the doctor to the punch and said, did they want his eyes.”

Normally that’s a subject doctors broach very carefully, but for Shanan the decision was simple.

There was no point in discussion, no point in wasting time. It’s what her dad would have wanted and as a donor recipient, it was an option she knew first hand could be life changing.

Shanan was born with kidney failure. Her right kidney was removed when she was eight.

She struggled with one poorly functioning kidney for years but eventually she went onto dialysis, hoping to stave off for as long as possible, the inevitable, a kidney transplant.

In 2016 she was fortunate to receive a kidney from a live donor, a friend she’d known for many years.

“We met though our church 15 or 16 years ago and she said then, if I ever needed a kidney she’d give me one. When things started to go pear shaped I called her. I gave her an out but she said she was in boots and all.”

Fortunately the friend’s kidney was a match but there were countless tests to undergo before her she was cleared to donate.

For Shanan there were also many health hurdles to clear before she could undergo surgery.

But in November 2016, the friends were wheeled into a Christchurch Hospital operating room and the transplant took place.

Her friend, Viv Gentleman, has fully recovered and is getting on with life, minus one kidney but while Shanan’s life has improved significantly, she says she’s still having other health issues related to the surgery that are slowly being resolved.

This week the world of organ donation stepped up to a new level with Shanan receiving a letter from Organ Donation New Zealand thanking the family for their consent to eye donation following their dad’s death. That letter also told them a little about the way the donated eye tissue had been used.

Some will die waiting while others will continue to lead lives restricted by long-term treatment.

Donation makes a difference.

It offers valuable second chances and dramatically changes lives.

More donors means many, many more people who could benefit from life saving transplants.

People of all ages can be considered for donation. At the time of your death, your age and medical condition will determine the organs and tissues that can be donated.

Very few medical conditions will prevent a person from being able to donate any organs or tissues.

For example, a person with severe asthma may not be able to donate lungs for transplantation, but may be able to donate their heart, liver, kidneys and eyes.

In New Zealand, you can choose to donate your heart, lungs, pancreas, liver and kidneys. The

In addition the sclerae (the white of the eye) has been stored for future transplants that will restore a normal eye function to recipients in the future.

“Just imagine, there are people out there who can see their family again. It blows your mind,” Shanan said.

Knowing the good her father’s donation has done was pretty emotional she said, and

donation of these organs will extend and save some peoples’ lives, while greatly improving the quality of life for others.

Tissue transplants include eye tissue (corneas and sclera) to restore sight or repair eyes and heart valves which are often used to save the lives of babies and young children.

Donated skin is the preferred dressing for people with severe burns.

In 2017 there were a record number of deceased organ donations in New Zealand. The total of 73 organ donors represents a 102 per cent increase over the past five years.

Less than 1 per cent of New Zealanders die in a way that allows them to be organ donors.

Donation is only possible when a person is in an Intensive Care Unit, on a ventilator (breathing machine), usually with devastating brain damage.

she wants to encourage other individuals and other families to consider organ donation after death. One donation, she said, can affect so many lives.

For her the news keeps getting better. Through the organ donation organisation she is able to write to the two people who received her father’s corneas, a letter the organ transplant group will pass on. Those donors, if they wish, can then reply.

While Shanan celebrates her new life as a donor recipient, saying she can now do things that would otherwise be impossible, she can still remember what it was like as a child who lived with kidney failure.

“I did a lot of stuff as a child but I couldn’t keep up with my peers, especially as a teenager,” she said.

Her remaining kidney basically gave up its limited function five weeks before her 40th birthday.

With is function down to just 6 per cent, dialysis was her only option.

The early days of her new regime were rough.

“I remember thinking while I was struggling, that I’m going for treatment that makes me feel so incredibly ill, but it’s saving my life,” she said.

And over the years, while there were ongoing side effects, she began to feel better.

Post transplant, Shanan said she’s now feeling pretty normal and she wants others in need of organ transplants to have the same opportunity she had.

“There’s such a major shortage of organs available, and live donation, that’s important too.”

Tainted liquor kills 150

At least 150 people have died and about 200 people have been hospitalised after drinking tainted liquor in two separate incidents in India’s remote northeast, authorities said yesterday.

The victims of one of the most deadly bootleg liquor-related incidents in India were mostly tea plantation workers in Golaghat and Jorhat districts in Assam state, said Himanta Biswa Sharma, the state’s health minister.

Assam is India’s largest tea-producing state, with more than 1000 plantations producing more than 50 per cent of Indian tea.

The workers consumed the tainted liq-

uor laced with methyl alcohol, a chemical that attacks the central nervous system, on Thursday and started falling unconscious.

They were rushed to nearby hospitals and the death toll rose to 150 by early yesterday, police and health officials said.

Sharma, the minister, said about 200 people who fell sick after drinking the toxic liquor are in hospitals, some in critical condition.

Officials said 50 patients have died in the past 24 hours.

The owner of a local brewing unit and 13 others have been arrested, said top police official Mukesh Agarwal. He said police are pursuing other people believed to be con-

nected to the racket as part of an ongoing investigation.

“We shall not spare anyone involved in manufacture and distribution of the tainted liquor,” Minister Sharma said.

Locals vandalised the home of one of the arrested. Authorities collected samples for the medical tests.

Deaths from illegally brewed alcohol are common in India because the poor cannot afford licensed brands from government-run shops. Illicit liquor is cheap and often spiked to increase potency.

In India’s Uttar Pradesh state earlier this month, about 80 people died from tainted bootleg liquor.

New role for Saudi prince Saudi Arabia has appointed the full younger brother of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as its deputy defence minister and named a princess as the kingdom’s first woman ambassador to the United States.

The appointments follow Riyadh’s efforts to overcome an international outcry over last year’s murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi by Saudi agents, which damaged relations with Western allies including the United States.

Prince Khalid bin Salman, a son of the king, had been ambassador to Washington since 2017. Prince Mohammed, who controls most levels of power in the country, has been defence minister since 2015 when his father ascended the throne.

The crown prince led Saudi Arabia into a war in Yemen that has killed tens of thousands of civilians and pushed the country to the brink of famine, sparking widespread criticism especially after the Khashoggi murder.

The new envoy to Washington, Princess Reema bint Bandar bin Sultan, is the daughter of a former long-time ambassador to the United States.

She had a career in the private sector before joining the kingdom’s General Sports Authority where she has championed women’s participation in sports and focused on increasing women’s empowerment.

Royal couple visiting Morocco Prince Harry and the Duchess of Sussex have arrived in Morocco for an official trip scheduled to be their last international journey before Meghan gives birth to their first child.

Meghan is seven months pregnant and is expected to give birth in April.

The royal couple’s schedule begins on Sunday in the town of Asni in the Atlas Mountains to hear about the education of girls in rural communities.

They will then travel to Rabat to meet with diplomats, influential women, young entrepreneurs and disabled athletes.

The visit will also include a trip to the Moroccan Royal Federation of Equestrian Sports to observe horses that provide support to children with special needs.

Harry and Meghan plan to return to Britain on Tuesday.

After five of their North Island dates sold out, Sol3 Mio have now announced shows in Blenheim, Christchurch, Oamaru, Dunedin and Invercargill. “It’s been amazing to see the response to the Back to Basics tour,” said Sol3 Mio’s Pene Pati. “South Island fans have made it clear that we have to go down to see them, and we’ve found a week in May where we can fit in five concerts.”

Netflix’s newest star Martin Henderson has won a coveted role in new series Virgin River. The 44-yearold is following in the Netflix footsteps of fellow Kiwis Anthony Starr, KJ Apa and Matttias Inwood with a role in the streaming giant’s latest drama. It is Henderson’s first role in a series since his two seasons in Grey’s Anatomy, where he earned the nickname McKiwi. Virgin River is part of a push by Netflix into Hallmark Channel-esque programming, which means it’s high on soapy love and romance. Henderson will play Jack Sheridan, an ex-Marine commander who moves to a small Californian town in search of a peaceful life.

Jackson estate sues HBO Michael Jackson’s estate is suing HBO for more than $US100 million over an upcoming documentary accusing the late star of abusing two men when they were children. Leaving Neverland, which portrays Jackson as a serial child molester, has already caused a strong reaction after its premier at the Sundance Film Festival. It features testimony from James Safechuck and Wade Robinson, who allege in graphic detail that Jackson abused them both when they were young boys. Thhe singer’s estate argues that the film violates a 1992 contract to broadcast a Jackson concert which included an agreement to not disparage the singer at any future point in time.

Confronting the fragility of reality Five new video works confronting the complexity and fragility of reality are on exhibition at the Ashburton Art Gallery.

Truth or Consequences is by artists Andrew de Freitas, Jeremy Leatinu’u, Vea Mafile`o, Janine Randerson and Bridget Reweti.

Truth or Consequences was curated by United Kingdom-based academic Dr Erika Balsom, commissioned by CIRCUIT Artist Film and Video Aotearoa New Zealand with the support of Creative New Zealand.

It had its origins in Balsom sending the artists a statement, reportedly made by United States presidential aide Karl Rove.

Speaking to a New York Times reporter, Rove suggested that the

concept of reality was hopelessly behind the times.

“That’s not the way the world really works anymore. We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality,” Rove was quoted as saying.

Discussing the various responses the artists have made to the brief, Balsom said the five works were very different to each other, reflecting their creators’ individual commitments and interests. “But certain preoccupations recur across them, including landscape, migration, indigenous histories, oceanic environments, and portraiture,” Balsom said.

And they explored through a documentary impulse an en-

counter with our shared world, which was an important project in today’s post-truth era.

Vea Mafile`o’s Toa`ipuapuaga (Strength in Suffering) was filmed in the Samoan village of Siufaga in 2016, where a young woman named Toa was pronounced dead after beginning to display wounds and cuts on her body, only to reawaken two hours later, giving rise to musings over whether there was a spiritual or earthly origin.

Andrew de Freitas’ Weight is a portrait of trans musician Lees Brenson, which gradually metamorphoses into an effort to puncture the monopolisation of reality by the forces of normativity.

Bridget Reweti’s Ziarah takes to the open sea in search of the remains of Tupaia, a nobleman from Raiatea in the Society Islands who was indispensable in liaising between Maori and the crew of the Endeavour on its first visit to Aotearoa in 1769.

And in Mai i te kei o te waka ki te ihu o te waka, Jeremy Leatinuu turns his attention to the journey of the waka Tainui and its people to Aotearoa.

Janine Randerson’s Interceptor addresses the contamination of Manukau Harbour and speaks to one of the great problems of ecological crisis, that it may not manifest itself until it is too late.

Truth of Consequences is on display until April 28.

Kiwi spirit shines through T

he Kiwi spirit is often a term that gets bandied round a fair bit, but never has it been more to the fore than Jaime the past month.

Two great examples of good old-fashioned Kiwi spirit have come about, and have done a massive amount for people in need thanks to the hard work of select groups of people.

I am of course talking about the Nelson Hay Fires Convoy and the Shear for Life event.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Baz Hill who was one of the initial organisers of the hay convoy only a couple of days in to the project.

It eventually saw more than 20 truckloads of hay and feed carted north to farmers in need after the Nelson fires,

but at that point only 10 trucks had been confirmed and more were potentially in the pipeline, but Pitt-MacKay nothing was set in REPORTER stone.

At that point when I spoke to Baz he was busy working his day job as a contractor while also organising the logistics of what turned out to be a massive operation.

He was not getting paid to do what he was doing, was getting nowhere near the amount of sleep a normal person should need to function and he had no direct connection to the Nelson fires, but what he had was good old Kiwi spirit, and that in bucket loads.

The posts and stories that have since gone on to the group’s Facebook page should be enough to move even the toughest of tough guys.

It’s a fairly similar story for the Shear for Life event, which came about from a couple of beers and turned in to an event that saw some of the biggest names Kiwi sporting circles coming together.

Shearers like organiser Rocky Bull did not need to give away their skills for free to raise the funds that they have done, but they did it because it was the right thing to do.

In the end, champion shearers have been brought together alongside legends like Sir Brian Lochore and Buck Shelford to have a bit of fun, put some hard work in and raise some money for a good cause.

It sounds incredibly Kiwi, and that is because it is.

The stories are different in how they came about, but both are linked with the desire to do a bit of good, and a magic bit of Kiwi spirit, and both deserves a massive pat on the back.

Reforming our education system A

few weeks ago in this newspaper my colleague Amy Adams wrote about some of the far-reaching education reforms released by the Government last year.

Some of the proposals are sensible.

The report recommends the abolition of the decile system, a clunky relic which bases funding solely on the deprivation or wealth of the area surrounding the school.

It doesn’t take into account the needs of some communities within that area, or that pockets of deprivation occur in otherwise wealthy areas.

In some parts of the country it’s also become an inaccurate and unfortunate proxy for how “good” a school is.

Where parents perceive that a decile eight or nine school is better than a decile two or three school.

In the last couple of years of the National Government we did a lot of work on an alternative, a needs based equity index which targets additional resources at young people at risk of not achieving.

tunately up until now hasn’t been progressed by the new Government. With the Education Taskforce recommendation urging him to do it, I hope the Education Minister agrees it’s needed.

But two of the key recommendations do concern me.

The first is that a number of the functions of local Boards of Trustees be transferred to Ministry of Education controlled regional hubs or to the Ministry itself in Wellington.

One of the key tenets of our education system for the last three decades has been of local involvement in schools. I worry that removing more power from parents and handing it to bureaucrats will change the local flavour of our schools, and make it even harder for families to

engage with what their kids are learning.

The second worry I have relates more specifically to our district.

Growing up in Ashburton and going to my local primary school, then on to Intermediate for Years 7 and 8 (form 1 and 2 for us oldies) seemed perfectly natural.

It wasn’t until I was older I realised that in many parts of the country this doesn’t happen.

In Timaru, for example, all primary schools are full primary, going from Year 1 to 8, with no Intermediate schools. In fact, there’s only 115 Intermediate schools across the whole country.

The report recommends their abolition, or at least substantial change. Three options are put up: schools that go all the way from Year 1 to year 13, primary schools extending for two more years, or a more dramatic junior high school and senior high school model.

Losing Intermediate schools, and particularly losing Ashburton Intermediate, would be a terrible shame.

I can understand why some schools, and why some parents and communities would want to go with a full primary model. I recall well the debate that Ashburton Borough School went through a fair few years ago.

But that to me is the best way.

Allowing schools to move to that model if they choose to, but not force all schools and regions to adopt it.

The beauty of our current model, in Ashburton at least, is that families have the choice between fully primary or the Intermediate model.

Tomorrow night at 7pm at the event centre I’m holding a public meeting with National’s Education spokesperson Nikki Kaye to discuss the proposed changes.

■ Heat a large frying pan over medium-low heat. Add the oil, and when hot, cook the crumbed cutlets, in batches, for 3 minutes on each side. Rest.

■ If cooking on a BBQ flat plate, oil

■ Lemon vinaigrette ■ Place the lemon juice and Dijon mustard in a bowl and season.

Whisk in the olive oil until emulsified. If vinaigrette is too tart, add extra salt or sweeten with a little honey. Vinaigrette can be made in a screw top jar. Simply add all the ingredients, screw lid on tightly and shake to combine.

Iwami Ginzan: Japan’s heart M

r Arime stands outside his shop in Iwami Ginzan, the Unesco World Heritage silver-mining town at the heart of Shimane Prefecture.

He’s beaming with pride, holding a 2018 calendar open at September, where a photograph shows a sleek state-of-the-art car sitting outside a beautiful wooden building.

It’s his shop in the picture, where he sells lollies handcrafted from soya beans in a centuries-old practice. He offers a sample and they are surprisingly good: sweet, salty and crunchy, or flavoured with plum and other fruits that populate the valley.

It’s a perfect image of modern-day Japan: a people immensely proud of their heritage, tradition and history, but with both feet firmly planted in the 21st century.

It’s the preservation of their culture that most visitors to Japan come to see. And they are coming in their droves: from 8.3 million in 2008 to more than 28.6 million in 2018 according to the Japan Tourism Board.

Most are going to the tourist hotspots of Tokyo, Kobe and Kyoto but with 350 per cent growth in 10 years, tourism numbers are a bit of a problem in the already crowded centres.

With more tourists expected, especially in the next few years as the Rugby World Cup (2019), Tokyo Olympic Games (2020) and World Masters Games (2021) encourage even more visitors, the search is on for the less-visited areas that offer the full Japanese experience, but without the crowds.

Heartland Japan, a tour company founded by 30-something entrepreneur Keijiro Sawano, aims to do just that.

Sawano hails from the Shimane Prefecture in Japan’s southwest – the oldest settled area of Japan, according to archaeological discoveries – but has settled in Tokyo after travelling across the globe, establishing a tour company specialising in getting travellers off the beaten

Iwami Ginzan is off the beaten track for foreigners, but once suffered from tourism pressure with more than 800,000 visitors to the town in one year until cars were banned in 2016. Visitor numbers have since dropped to 300,000 a year, enhancing the visitor experience.

The town, Omori, grew up to service the silver mine over the 400 years of its existence. It was extensively rebuilt after a fire destroyed nearly all the buildings 200 years ago and remains beautifully preserved, nestled in a valley forested with a huge variety of trees that change with the seasons and offer a multi-coloured backdrop to the picture-postcard-perfect wooden buildings that line narrow streets.

museum; the historic shrines of Kigami, which were built in 1812 as a reminder of the great fire and include a dragon painted on the ceiling; and Gohyaku Rakan that includes 500 stone statues in two caves, commemorating men who died in the mine, all individualised.

The Kumagai house, a merchant’s house that was home to 16 generations of the same family gives an insight into how locals lived, including traditional cooking experiences.

The main street winds uphill through the town that gives way to forests of maple, bamboo, myrtle and pine, narrowing in places to a footpath. Historic mine entrances litter the way up to the Ryugenji Mabu Mine Shaft, a 273m-long tunnel and the only shaft of more than 600 that is

open to the public.

The path continues up and over the hills, marking the old trade routes to the Yunotsu port beyond.

It’s still possible to walk along these paths, but a guide is recommended: bears, wild boar and snakes live in these forests and snow makes the paths impassable in winter.

The lower parts of the path are easily negotiated through bamboo groves leading historic silver-mining town of Iwami Ginzan through the historic port town of Okidomari, a natural deep-water harbour where it’s still possible to see bollards cut into the sandstone in the 16th century to moor ships taking silver to China and beyond.

The path becomes a road snaking along the edge of the Sea

of Japan to the port of Yunotsu where fishing boats bob on the waves.

Yunotsu is known for its natural hot springs, which feed a couple of onsen, the public bath-houses.

The Motoyu onsen features two mineral pools in gender-separated areas with hot and even hotter water. The locals seem immune to the heat but caution is advised when entering the pools.

Yunotsu is a well-preserved town of historic wooden buildings and shrines, the flickering glow of electric lights seemingly the only nod to present day as day fades into night.

That is until the bus arrives to take us back to the ryokan – the 21st-century visiting the past.

Stags taste rare defeat

Methven finally found some form, while the Tech Stags suffered a rare loss in an action-packed final round of Mid Canterbury Cricket’s Muirhead Rosebowl competition on Saturday.

Lauriston handed the Tech side their first loss of the Muirhead competition, by four wickets, which was enough to see Lauriston knock the Stags off the top of the leaderboard, with their superior run rate enough to see them in top spot heading into the semi-finals.

Down the other end of the table was Methven, who despite producing one of their best batting efforts of season on Saturday, fin-

ished the Muirhead round robin without a win.

After being rolled for just 40 last weekend against Tech and having to default a couple of weeks before that due to a lack of players, Methven had been struggling, but on Saturday they showed what they were actually capable of.

Playing at the Methven Domain, a 10-man home side made 199 all out off 43 overs and would have been feeling pretty happy with that, but Coldstream made light work of it, knocking the total off in just 33.5 overs.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, Methven openers Billy Kinnear and Davey Maw put on a partnership of 89 before Kinnear became Coldstream’s first victim

of the day in the 18th over for 28, but Maw was far from finished.

He went on to top score with 95 before being bowled by Jay Houston with his side’s score at 172 off 36 overs, and although the remaining four wickets fell quickly after that, Methven had still set a pretty handy total of 200 for Coldstream to win.

Methven’s bowlers struck early too, taking the key wicket of Jay Houston when Coldstream had just seven runs on the board, but from there most Coldstream batsmen got starts and they steadily chipped away at the total.

Rick Burgess top-scored for Coldstream, seeing his side home and finishing 75 not out, while Sean Burgess was also there at

the end, facing just the one ball which he hit for four to finish 4 not out.

Sean Burgess had also taken 3/30 with the ball earlier in the day, while Methven’s top bowler was Louis McDonald who took 2/47.

Meanwhile at Lauriston on Saturday, a nine-man Tech Stags batted first and were all out for 166, with Callum Gallagher topping the scoreboard with 52 while Alex Hooper and Liam O’Connor finished with two wickets each.

In reply, Lauriston got there for the loss of six wickets, with Tom Ravenscroft their best batsmen with 47 runs, and Nick Gilbert adding 33.

Bevan Ravenscroft took two wickets for the Tech Stags.

Virat Kohli has pinpointed Marcus Stoinis as Australia’s most potent weapon during their current tour of India, while Aaron Finch has also showered the game-breaking allrounder with praise.

Stoinis’ stocks have soared in recent years to a point where he is now Australia’s top-rated allrounder in all three formats.

Stoinis is yet to receive a baggy green, despite the public pleas of Shane Warne, but was called into the test squad ahead of Mitch Marsh for the recent clash in Canberra.

The 29-year-old has also now clearly overtaken Marsh in the national limited-overs pecking order.

Kohli, who will captain Stoinis in this year’s Indian Premier League, was thoroughly impressed with the allrounder’s recent white-ball performances in Australia.

“If I had to single out one player that can make more impact, that player would be Marcus Stoinis,” India skipper Kohli told reporters in Vizag on the eve of the tour-opening Twenty20 match.

“Because he’s come around really well during the BBL and he’s making stand-out performances on a consistent basis.

“You can see he’s grown in confidence and he’s definitely going to be a very important player for them.”

Stoinis scored 533 runs at 53.3 while opening for Melbourne Stars in the recent BBL, the best batting average of any player in the competition.

He backed that up with 14 wickets at 16.14, the second best bowling average of any player in the competition with more than seven scalps.

“To have someone as flexible as that is a great asset to any team, because then you can build a team around them and they can almost fill any hole you need,” Finch said.

“It provides so much of a chop out for other guys.

“Having an allrounder like Marcus in your side is just so crucial.

“We’ve seen that with India, when Hardik Pandya is fit it makes the balance of the team so much better.

“Same with Ben Stokes for England.”

Pandya is currently sidelined with a back injury and will miss Australia’s entire limited-overs tour of India, which begins today.

Christie does the Rakaia – again

For the second year running, Jason Christie has returned to his roots and won the Ride the Rakaia cycle race.

The annual race took the more than 120 riders on a 100km ride starting and finishing in Rakaia, and former Mid Cantabrian Christie – who now lived in Blenheim – was one of the favourites when riders lined up at the starting line on Saturday morning.

It was a tag he went on to live up to, although he found himself with a real battle on his hands in the closing stages as the race went down to the wire.

The race took riders from the Rakaia township, across a Rakaia River bridge that was closed to traffic for 15 minutes to allow riders to cross, and then up to the Rakaia Gorge where they crossed the mighty Rakaia for a second time, before returning to Rakaia.

After a tough 100km there were three riders in contention as the

finish line neared, with Christie showing great skills in the tight finish, winning the sprint finish to the line to take it out ahead of Ioan Fuller and Ollie Jones. Christie’s winning time was 2.25.17 hours, with Fuller and Jones finishing just one second back.

It was a vastly different finish to last year’s race, which Christie – a multiple time national champion and road race competitor from last year’s Gold Coast Commonwealth Games – won by a margin of more than five minutes.

A rider who had been expected to give him a run for his money this year was Michael Vink, last year’s Tour of Southland winner, but that challenge didn’t eventuate.

Vink rode the Rakaia race on Saturday before heading to Dunedin for yesterday’s first leg of New Zealand’s premier cycling series – the Calder Stewart Series – but he finished well back in 14th place in the Ride the Rakaia, covering the course in 2.32.45 hours.

Meanwhile in the race for the women’s title on Saturday, Georgia Christie – the wife of men’s winner Jason Christie - also made it onto the podium for the second year running, following up her win in 2018 with a third placing this year, coming in behind winner Amanda Jamieson and second placed Jojo Butler in another sprint finish.

There were two other titles up for grabs too – the King and Queen of the Gorge, for the fastest riders through the Rakaia Gorge.

Those titles went to Georgia Christie for the women, and Ethan Batt for the men.

Batt ended up being fourth across the line at the end, more than four minutes back from the first three riders.

Just three riders tackled the Ride the Rakaia’s shorter option – a 22km race which finished in Te Pirita – with Ewen Rowse the fastest in 48.50 minutes, while the last competitors in the 100km race crossed the finish line more than five hours after it began.

Golden girl dominates When the New Zealand Rowing Championships wrapped up in Twizel on Saturday, Veronica Wall was once again one happy rower.

Now rowing out of the Southern RPC (Rowing Performance Centre), the Ashburton Rowing Club member took to the water as an under-22 rower over the five days at Lake Ruataniwha and continued her stellar young career with a series of podium placings.

In the under-22 single sculls she won the A final in a time of 9.24.79 minutes, and in the under-22 coxless double sculls with Laura Glen she again topped the standings, winning the A final in a time of 7.29.19 minutes.

The pair also teamed up in the women’s premier pairs event and made the A final where they placed fifth in a time of 8.21.52 minutes.

Wall’s third title came in the under-22 coxless quadruple sculls where she and Glen, Kathryn Glen and Shannon Cox combined to take it out in a 7.13.86 minutes.

Meanwhile another former Mid Cantabrian, Mayfield’s Emma Dyke, had to settle for second in all of her outings at the nationals – the premier coxless pairs, fours and eight.

It was also a good regatta for some Ashburton Rowing Club rowers.

Ged Wall was third in the men’s intermediate single sculls final, and in the men’s under-20 single sculls Haxby Hefford was seventh in the A final.

Hefford was also fifth in the men’s club single sculls A final, before combining with Michael Wall for a third placing in the men’s club double sculls B final.

Mollie Gibson competed in the women’s senior single sculls and was seventh in the B final, and she also combined with Grace Wilson to finish seventh in the women’s under-20 double sculls A final.

In the women’s under-19 double sculls, Gibson and Emma Stagg were fourth in the A final, while Aidan Elvines and Grace Adams were third in the B final.

Ashburton’s Veronica Wall was a fixture on the podium in recent days.

The New Zealand contingent has been going strongly in the World Championships in Chicago. Topranked Kiwi woman Joelle King notched the most impressive of the victories yesterday, easing to a straight-games win over Egyptian Heba El Torky. The 30-year-old from Cambridge took just 24 minutes to dispose of El Torky.

King, the fourth seed, will face another Egyptian - world No 24 Mayar Hany - in the next round today. There were also victories for both Kiwi men’s players in the draw, with Paul Coll and Campbell Grayson each advancing in fourgame encounters.

Bautista wins sprint Alvaro Bautista has backed up his victory in the opening race of the Superbike world championship by winning the inaugural sprint race format. The Spaniard did not have it all his own way in yesterday’s historic 10-lap race but the Kawasaki rookie managed to hold off the challenge of Kawasaki pair Jonathan Rea and Leon Haslam.

Rea led over the line on the opening two laps and then edged his way in front a few more times before Bautista eventually gained control. Bautista won by 1.176sec over Rea, with Haslam another four seconds arrears in third.

Wood helps Spurs crash and burn Tottenham’s ambitions of Premier League glory were dealt a grievous blow yesterday when not even a goal from their returning talisman Harry Kane could prevent them stumbling to a damaging and contentious 2-1 defeat at Burnley.

Goals from Burnley forwards Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes at Turf Moor left Spurs’ hopes of piling the pressure on the top two, Manchester City and Liverpool, in tatters and Tottenham’s normally serene boss Mauricio Pochettino raging.

But Crystal Palace’s Roy Hodgson was left beaming as he became the oldest man to take charge of a Premier League match at the age of 71 years, 198 days – and marked the occasion with a 4-1 win at Leicester City.

Spurs’ shock defeat kept them on 60 points, still five adrift of lCity and Liverpool, who had the chance to move three points clear at the top when they visit Manchester United overnight.

At the other end of the table, Aaron Mooy’s Huddersfield Town’s freefall towards the second-tier Championship hurtled on when the league’s bottom club lost 2-0 at Newcastle United.

Pochettino had seen victory over Burnley as imperative to his side’s hopes of maintaining a title challenge.

Yet the usually affable Argentine ended up cutting an angry, frustrated figure at the whistle, confronting referee Mike Dean over what he clearly felt had been an incorrect decision that led to Burnley’s first goal after 57 minutes.

King destroys El Torky

Tiger Woods has won more major championships than anyone other than Jack Nicklaus but his putting went badly awry during the third round of the WGC-Mexico Championship. The American, in his first competitive appearance south of the border, sent murmurs of disbelief through the packed gallery when he four-putted at the 15th hole at Club de Golf Chapultepec. It took him three attempts to get the ball into the hole on the 16th green and the PGA Tour confirmed that it was the first time he had put together such a poor display of putting on consecutive holes.

“We made some mistakes on the pitch and I made some mistakes afterwards on the pitch. I need to go to the dressing room and drink some water but what happened, happened,” he said.

Manly could be forced to turn to Brendan Elliot to start the season at NRL fullback with Tom Trbojevic in serious doubt for round one due to a hamstring injury. The Sea Eagles fear Trbojevic could be out for a month after he pulled up sore when returning a kick in the club’s trial loss to Cronulla, forcing him to leave the game at Shark Park and not return. The NSW Origin ace was expected to go for scans yesterday. If Manly’s marquee man is ruled out, 25-year-old recruit Elliot will likely to be moved to fullback.

Injury blow for Broncos Brisbane’s front-row stocks have taken another hit with Tevita Pangai Junior in doubt for round one of the NRL after he injured his hamstring in the trial win over Wynnum-Manly. Just days after fellow young prop Payne Haas was given a four-game ban for failing to fully cooperate with the integrity unit, Pangai went off in the 18th minute at Kougari Oval and didn’t return. Coach Anthony Seibold has some of the best young forwards in the country but the absence of Pangai would be a mega blow.

In brief Jaguares run down Bulls Two tries in the last 20 minutes have helped the Jaguares secure a 27-12 Super Rugby victory over the visiting Bulls in a scrappy contest played in heavy rain. The Bulls led 12-9 when five-eighth Handre Pollard converted his fourth penalty on the hour mark. However, Jaguares replacement Rodrigo Bruni went over off a catch-and-drive in the 64th minute before winger Bautista Delguy scored in the 73rd to seal the three tries to zero win for the hosts. The result was a tonic for the ambitious Argentines, who lost 25-16 at home to the Lions last weekend.

By Niall aNdersoN If that’s the damage the Crusaders can inflict upon one of their big rivals for the Super Rugby title, then Lord have mercy on the rest of the competition.

A 38-22 thumping of the Hurricanes marks the 17th win in a row for the two-time defending champions, breaking their own record for the longest winning streak in Super Rugby history.

While they’ve been unbeatable worldwide for the past 11 months, Christchurch Stadium – as the pre-game sword-wielding horsemen indicate – is an impenetrable fortress for the Crusaders.

Twenty-one consecutive times a team have attempted a late night raid, and 21 times they have been repelled by the dominant hosts – only three of them even managing to get within seven points.

Replacement halfback Herschel Jantjies scored a try in the 86th minute as the Stormers claimed a first win of the Super Rugby season with a 19-17 victory over the Lions at Newlands. The try, a first of the campaign for the home side, put the Stormers into the lead for the first time in a game in which both team made numerous handling and discipline errors. The home side were camped in the Lions 22 for the final 20 minutes but their execution let them down and it looked as though they would endure a second defeat before Jantjies provided the magic touch to snatch the win.

The last team to beat them in Christchurch was indeed the Hurricanes, and in fact, the Canes have managed to claim victory over the Crusaders in every season since 2011.

Yet, the only streak extended on Saturday night was always set to be the Crusaders’ winning run, considering the visitors were missing Beauden Barrett, Ardie Savea and Vaea Fifita, and only had access to TJ Perenara and Ngani Laumape via the bench.

It’s hard enough to win Kiwi derbies away from home anyway – the Hurricanes have now lost five in a row – but not for one second did the visitors have the upper hand.

The return of their stars – Barrett is sorely needed to provide some direction – will make things easier, as will a return home for their next two games.

But, even taking into account legitimate excuses, the Hurricanes’ early returns have not been great, on both ends.

After mustering their fewest metres since 2016 in their scratchy victory over the Waratahs, they could only produce 52 metres of attack in the first half, and missed a staggering 24 tackles.

The sloppiest defence also led to the game’s most absurd try.

After Manasa Mataele broke a tackle down the right wing, it looked like he had been bundled into touch.

However, somehow contorting his body to keep his legs airborne as he faceplanted the turf, the winger flicked a stunning nolook pass to Richie Mo’unga, who raced away for one of his two tries.

Scott Barrett also bagged a brace as the Crusaders’ young

All Black cavalry all made their mark, with Jack Goodhue showing his class on his season debut with an assertively hostile performance in midfield.

The Hurricanes showed more promise in the second half, denying the Crusaders a bonus point with three tries in the last 15 minutes, and they can also take solace in the realisation that they were playing a Crusaders side operating at their peak, with all of their All Blacks stars available.

Oh, hang on – Codie Taylor, Kieran Read and Sam Whitelock are still yet to make their season debuts.

Red hot Wales see off English raiders in Cardiff Wales have fired another Rugby World Cup warning to Australia after edging ever closer to the Six Nations trophy with an epic 21-13 win over England.

“We lost some momentum, gave a few penalties,” Jones said.

Triple Bypass wins a thriller

Nairn and driver Bob Butt combined to win the event three years ago with Conon Bridge, while back in 2000.

Nairn handled the filly Enthusiast and prior to that it was Butt’s father David who drove Now Another Look and Above The Stars.

A gelding by Muscle Hill and the first foal from a top trotting filly in Lotalov, Lotamuscle was an upset winner, paying over $28, but his connections had been quietly confident.

He was a winner on debut at Motukarara in September, although his form had been indif-

ferent before resuming with a second at the Amberley meeting three weeks ago.

“He had been having some gait issues due to a splint which had been niggling him,” Butt said.

“But Paul did what Paul does and had him right when the big races come around.

“He was about 95 per cent right in his gait at the Amberley meeting but he needed that run and he was 100 per cent today.

“Racing him those grade races in the spring did serve to toughen him up a bit.”

Lotamuscle settled towards the rear and starting the last 800m he had only the favourite, Cheerful, behind him.

But when Aorangi galloped when in front on the home turn

and inconvenienced Get Lucky and Full Noise, Butt was able to quickly latch on to the back of the latter and got the better of him towards the finish.

“That little skirmish helped us out because I was able to get on to the back of Full Noise and have a little breather before issuing a challenge.”

Sam Ottley could offer no explanation for why Aorangi galloped when he did when appearing to be travelling like a winner.

“There wasn’t a lot of room to the inside so I thought to get out of way I’d better head to the middle of the track,” Ottley said.

Lotamuscle shaded Full Noise by half a neck at the finish.

There were four lengths to another Muscle Hill gelding in Bax-

ter, who received a charmed trip in the trail and held off You Really Got Me and Cheerful.

Culverden breeder-owners Marty Smith and Shaun Lissington were ecstatic after Lotamuscle’s success as “it had been a while between drinks”.

They raced Lotalov together and won nine races and $135,000 with the daughter of Love You. She won the group 2 Sires Stakes Trotters Championship in Auckland beating Stent. Smith and Lissington also raced the good trotters Le Reveur and Quevert, the latter on the comeback trail now after being off the scene for 18 months.

by Muscle Hill while being back in foal to Father Patrick.

“The Andover Hall is with Paul as well and might make a twoyear-old,” said Smith.

“But it’s getting to a point where we wouldn’t mind a filly.”

Last year’s $230,000 yearling purchase Smooth Deal confirmed his superiority over the early season juvenile pacers when he took out the day’s other feature, the group 3 Sapling Stakes.

It was a Bettor’s Delight and All Stars Stable trifecta with Smooth Deal and Tim Williams holding off Flying Even Bettor and Copperfield. The race was just a sprint for home, a last quarter in 26.8 to complete the mile in a sedate 1.58.1.

It was the All Stars’ sixth win in the race in the last seven years with Follow The Stars setting the race record of 1.53.8 in 2014.

Fab four for class mare Class mare Melody Belle secured her fourth Group One title for the season when she out-toughed her rivals in Saturday’s Haunui Farm Group One WFA Classic (1600m) at Otaki.

Fresh off victory in the Gr.1 BCD Group Sprint (1400m) at Te Rapa earlier in the month, the Jamie Richards-trained fouryear-old was confidently expected to prevail despite being dealt a blow earlier in the week when she drew barrier thirteen in the 14-horse field.

Luck was on the Commands mare’s side when rain on Friday and Saturday morning left the Otaki track rated a Slow7 with the pattern of the day favouring horses who made their runs out wide in the home straight.

Rider Opie Bosson followed that recipe to the letter as he positioned the mare nicely in behind the speed despite travelling wide for the better part of the first 800m.

Melody Belle was travelling easily as she moved into contention before Bosson sent her to the extreme outside to make her challenge.

Aretha is from the first New Zealand crop of the son of Invincible Spirit, rated the equal-leading European first crop sire in 2018. “This one is really special. If you said at the start of the season you would run in seven races and win five of them, a Group Two and four Group One’s, you wouldn’t believe it.

“So, it is very special.”

The victory also brought up a rare milestone for Bosson who has now been victorious in every Group One race that is run in New Zealand.

“I enjoyed winning that as it is the only Group One I haven’t won in New Zealand, so to get the whole lot, I am quite proud,” he said.

“This race always clashes with Matamata, so I haven’t ridden in it a lot, but to be on a quality mare like her, I knew I was in with a good chance.

“She is just a professional racehorse who never knows when to lie down.

“She was nice and balanced and when she came up underneath me, I knew she was going to be a big chance.”

The win took Melody Belle’s career record to ten wins from 19 starts, five of those at Group One level, and over $1.5million in stakes earnings.

Filly targets Guineas Trainer Allan Sharrock will lift his sights with promising threeyear-old Our Hail Mary after she maintained her unbeaten record with a comprehensive victory over 1200m at Otaki on Saturday. The Ocean Park filly had looked above average when sweeping to victory over 1100m on her home patch at New Plymouth last month and maintained that impression with another outstanding performance on the weekend, when ridden by Dylan Turner. “That was terrific although she really is a 2000m filly,” he said.

Historic win for the Tactix In the second game of netball’s Super Sunday, for just the second time in ANZ Premiership history, the Mainland Tactix have claimed a win over the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic.

Coming off the back of their most successful season to date, the Tactix took down the home side Magic 48-42.

It was a head-to-head battle throughout the clash with the scoreboard locked for the first two quarters and just a onepoint advantage in favour of the Tactix after the third.

The Magic led with attempts at goal but low percentages from young shooting duo Monica Falkner and Abigail Latu-Meafou saw the home side struggle to pull ahead.

DEATHS MAWHINNEY, Mavis Maureen (nee Stedman) – Our dear Mavis passed away peacefully on February 21, 2019, aged 84 1/2 years.

Loved wife "Rumble" of the late George. Loved Mum and mum-in-law of Barry and Anne; Sue and the late Kurt Conway; Paul and Pauline; and the late Terry. Loved Nana of Katrina, Steven, Michael, Olivia, and Dillion.

Much loved Great Nana of Maddison, and loved Fur Nana of Louie, Eddie, and Kimba. Special second Mum to Ross, Steve, and Jimmy.

A new take on an old favourite was given the big thumbs up by around 240 racers who took to the foothills of Mt Somers to enjoy it on Saturday morning.

The organisers of the Mt Somers Mountain Challenge – which was formerly known as the Mt Somers Mountain Bike Race – didn’t know what to expect heading towards race day.

They had no idea what sort of numbers the revamped race would attract, and they were also concerned about a dodgy weather forecast.

But, fortunately the weather held out and the people came for the Mayfield and Districts Lions Club organised event, spokesper-

son Aubrey Aitken said.

Around 90 to 100 people registered on the day.

Aitken said a shower passed through during registration, and it cooled down again by prizegiving time.

“But it was all over by then,” Aitken said.

In the past, the Mt Somers Mountain Bike Race had been solely mountain bike races of various distances, and while the main two – the 31km mountain bike challenge and the 23km ride – remained, they were joined this year by duathlons, a mountain run and a walk.

It was a format they were likely to largely stick with next year, due to the success of this year’s running, Aitken said.

Saturday’s 31km mountain bike challenge was won by Olly Pearce in a time of 1.18.04 hours, while under-18 competitor Brandon Thornley was four minutes behind in second and Flynn Marshall third.

The first female home over 31km was Kim Haack, followed by Katie Simons and Seonaigh Conchie.

Over the 23km distance Bryan Treleaven was the first mountain biker home, with the masters 60plus competitor just cracking the hour mark, crossing the finish line in 59.42 minutes.

Another masters 60-plus competitor, Victor Schikker was second and Mark Cornell third.

For the women, the first across the line in the 23km event was

Caitlin Titheridge, followed by Beatrice Naylor and Liz Brady.

The foothills duathlon was won

by Flavio Vianna, who reportedly had so much fun he completed the course twice.

He finished in 47.22 minutes with Ali Jones second and David Mavor rounding out the top three for the men, while Hannah Buchanan was the first woman home in 51.24 minutes, with Katherine Fitch second and Julie Lilley third.

In the lowland duathlon for the under-18s, Hamish Stocker came out on top for the boys in 41.46 minutes, with Andre Free second and Max Philpott third, while Millie Junge won the girls’ race in 38.00 minutes, followed by Rebecca Little and Madison Holgate.

The lowland duathlon for those over 18 was won by Richard Woodward for the men and Lani Guilford for the women.

The mountain run was a hardfought affair, with David MacDonald the first home for the men in a time of 1.09.32 hours, while first woman home Fiona Gilroy was just 10 seconds behind him.

Nigel Hodges and Kenneth Pottinger rounded out the top three for the men and Lily Fletcher and Bernadette Ewer were second and third respectively for the women.

The event was organised by the Mayfield and Districts Lions Club and in the 14 years it has been running it has raised more than $200,000 which had been put back into the community.
