Big plans for water storage BY MICHELLE NELSON MICHELLE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
The impact of this season’s drought has served as a compelling case for a Mid Canterbury irrigation company to launch its plans for new large-scale water storage facility in the Montalto district. Rangitata Diversion Race Management (RDRML) CEO Ben Curry put the proposal on
the table at yesterday’s Ashburton Zone committee meeting. The proposed dam would hold 30,000,000 cubic metres of water – equivalent to 12,000 Olympic swimming pools. By contrast the Carew water storage facility, further south on the Rangitata River, has capacity for 6.1 million cubic metres of water. Mr Curry said the proposal
had the tacit support of the Ministry of Primary Industries, in line with a Canterbury-wide plan to increase the reliability of irrigation water. The RDR currently supplies water to four Mid Canterbury irrigation schemes and hydrogeneration to Trustpower, but additional storage capacity would open up the possibility of moving water as far south as
Lake Opuha. “We have been reviewing the feasibility of water storage for the past four years and the time is right to take this forward. There is a lot of interest in water storage and with our established infrastructure, we’re in a position to meet that need,” Mr Curry said. The company expects to largely fill the pond using water it is already consented to take
from the Rangitata River, possibly supplemented by flood flows. “Storage will help us manage the water more efficiently and will also greatly improve irrigation reliability; something local farmers have desperately missed this summer,” Mr Curry said.
