Robbery at fuel station Local police are investigating a robbery at a Tinwald petrol station on Thursday night.

At around 7pm on Thursday night, an offender entered the Z Petrol Station in Tinwald armed with a large knife.

The offender confronted the sole station attendant but she was able to lock herself in an office in the building as she had seen the offender entering the station.

Once inside the building, the offender jumped over the counter and attempted to open the till.

Unsuccessful in his attempts, the offender removed the till and fled on foot around to the south side of the petrol station building.

Tinwald residents remarked on Thursday night of a heavy police presence in the area as they searched for the offender who

last night had yet to be located or identified.

Police would like to hear from anyone who saw the offender in the area or anyone who has information which could assist their investigation into the robbery.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Ashburton Police on 03 3078400 quoting file number 180823/5291.

Information can also be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The incident is the third robbery of its kind in the Ashburton township in the past few months.

In April an offender robbed the Tinwald Dairy, less than 200 metres from Thursday night’s incident while later that month the Discount Dairy on Alford Forrest Road was robbed at gunpoint.

Police are seeking help to identify this person who is suspected of robbing a Tinwald fuel station.

Overcoming the demon that is depression Provisional suicide data released yesterday by chief coroner Judge Deborah Marshall shows that over the year to June 30, 668 New Zealanders took their own lives.

The numbers have climbed steadily over the past 11 years and now sit at 13.67 people per 100,000.

Males are over represented in the statistics at 475 last year, compared to 193 females. This pattern has been consistent over many years. Male suicide numbers peak between the ages of 20 and 29 and again between 45 and 54. For females the peak comes between 15 and 24.

Most people who attempt suicide don’t want to die – they just want their pain to end or can’t see another way out of their situation, said Mental Health Foundation chief executive Shaun Robinson.

As a country, we needed to listen to what worked for people who had come through suicide, he said.

“There’s no single solution –

there are lots of things that will help, and all of us – government, community, businesses, whanau – everyone – need to work on this together.

“As a nation we can turn this tragic situation around, if we listen to what is working, resource it and join the dots into a concerted plan of action.”

“There is no time to waste.”

The inquiry panel will make recommendations to the government later this year.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Health Minister David Clark have described the provisional data on suicides as sobering, saying they underlined just how much work was needed to improve New Zealanders’ mental health and wellbeing.

“It is a tragedy that so many New Zealanders took their lives in a single year. Behind each of those statistics is not just a life lost, but a devastated family

and a shattered community. It is critically important that people – wherever they are in the country – can access help when they need it. We know we need to do more to make sure that happens,” Ardern said.

Talking about feelings was vital to mental health and New Zealanders needed to remind each other that doing this was not wrong nor weak, she said.

Clark said he had given the inquiry a strong direction by ensuring its terms of reference included an examination of current work on suicide prevention and support for those close to someone who has taken their own life.

“The inquiry was also given deliberately wide terms of reference so that it could look at everything from the drivers of mental health issues to the provision of mental health services and the wider community response to these issues.

“These are incredibly complex and difficult issues. No one should pretend there are easy answers – but I am confident the in-

quiry will come back with robust and far-reaching recommendations when it reports at the end of October,” he said.

Fate of historic hall unclear

Any hope of saving the old Ashburton County Council building in Baring Square east was dashed this week when a design contract was let for Ashburton’s new civic administration building and library.

Ashburton District councillors on Thursday signed off Athfield Architecture Ltd as lead architect and designer for what will be a multi-million project.

And in announcing the deal, mayor Donna Favel made it clear the county building would be a demolition victim. The fate of a second historic building on the site, Pioneer Hall, is unclear.

Historic Places Trust Mid Canterbury chair Julie Luxton made a last ditch appeal to councillors earlier this month to strengthen the county building so it could become part of the new complex.

Confirmation that it would be demolished was disappointing, she said.

During the public consultation process that preceded site selection for the complex, Luxton said it was clear the community wanted to retain the county building.

“People will be disappointed with this, but our emphasis now will be on the building behind, Pioneer Hall. It’s a very important little building, it’s part of our social history and it does deserve to be kept,” she said.

Yes, there would be a cost to retaining and strengthening the building, but that shouldn’t prevent council from ensuring one of the dwindling number of the town’s historic buildings was retained, Luxton said.

“We’re going to lose one building, we can’t lose another.”

It is yet to be decided whether Pioneer Hall is intended to be integrated into the new complex design or whether it will be demolished.

burton Hospital and the Ashburton County Council’s engineering staff moved around the corner from their Baring Square east headquarters into the small brick building, remaining there until 1939.

At that time the current county building was constructed and the Havelock Street building was converted into the Women’s Restrooms. It was used for this purpose until 1971. It was then leased to the Ashburton Historical Society and became Ashburton’s first museum. To recognise that role it was named Pioneer Hall.

In 1978 the museum relocated to buildings on the old Ashburton Technical School site and Pioneer Hall went through changing uses – from a taxi office until 1990 and then the headquarters of Birthright until 2004. It then stood empty until January 2007 when the Ashburton District Council granted the local branch of NZ Historic Places Trust a five-year lease, with right of renewal.

Long journey to finding a site A new council administration headquarters has been on the Ashburton District Council’s ra-

dar for many years as increasing staff numbers have put the existing Baring Square west building under increasing pressure.

Staff were eventually forced to move into an old villa next door to the council building and when this was demolished, the third level council chamber and meeting rooms were turned into staff office space.

The pressure was on the council to find a site to build a new administration headquarters, one that would meet its needs well into the future.

At the same time district councillors knew the Havelock Street library was living on borrowed time, its roof riddled with leaks and it did not fit the model of libraries of the future.

Since 2006 the council has been tagging funds for what was then planned to be a renovation and extension of the existing council building. In 2014 it budgeted to spend $5.4 million on building extensions.

The project has been signalled in three long term plans and in 2014 plans were for work to be carried out between 2017 and 2019.

The project gained momentum in 2015 when a needs analysis and site option report was commissioned. Through 2016 site options were narrowed and a long process of community consultation was undertaken.

A new build in Baring Square east won the day and was approved during the final weeks of the 2013-2016 council term.

Councillors opted to leave the final sign-off to the next team of councillors because it would be under their term that work on the project would get under way.

The site was to be signed off in February last year, but several new councillors wanted site options revisited. This put the project in limbo for several months while closed door workshops were held where all site options and costs were re-explored.

There remained some community disquiet however over the demolition of the old county building.

In spite of the desire of some councillors to overturn the original decision nine councillors and mayor Donna Favel voted for the Baring Square site, councillor Selwyn Price voted against it, saying he was not happy with the consultation process as did Alasdair Urquhart, a councillor during the previous term. He said he did not have enough information to agree to the site choice. Mark Malcolm abstained from voting.

Challenging the community one plastic bag at a time

Students at St Joseph’s School love a challenge and when they decided to undertake a project on ways they could change the world, the youngsters in Room 8 decided to focus on stopping pollution.

They asked questions, they laid down challenges and they took their concerns to the top, writing to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

Eight-year-old Delilah Simpson said her class focused on plastics and how they were polluting the earth because they were bought, used and thrown away.

“Every day the earth is being filled up with heaps of rubbish,” she said.

Letters were written to takeaway shops and the students mounted a crusade to encourage shops to make the switch from plastic to reusable or compostable containers.

Some said the decision on using alternative packaging was made by their head office, but others provided the students with examples of the ways in which they were already making a change.

The students took one of their school food suppliers to task, asking that lunches were no longer delivered in plastic containers.

They wrote letters, created posters and have prepared radio and television advertisements to pro-

mote their cause.

They also explored the different ways plastics and paper reacted when left in soil or in salt water, finding that while paper simply

disappeared, plastic remained unchanged.

Teacher Steph McCallum said her Year 3 and 4 students were totally committed to doing whatev-

er they could to care for the earth, their common home.

They know that they are the generation that will have a strong voice in making change, she said.

It’s time to go blue for prostate cancer

Phone scams still doing the rounds Police are warning people to be wary of scammers purporting to be from Spark and/or OFCANZ (Organised and Financial Crime Agency) who are seeking access to victims’ computers and bank accounts.

“We’ve been made aware of a recent incident where a person received a call from someone claiming to be from Spark, saying their computer had been accessed illegally or used for criminal purposes,“ said Detective Sergeant Damian Rapira-Davies, NZ Police Cybercrime Unit.

The caller then said they were transferring the person to OFCANZ. The “OFCANZ employee” then gave the person instructions on how to allow them access to their

computer and sought access to the person’s bank accounts.

OFCANZ was renamed and is no longer used within police.

This is a variation on previous scams seen by police, where the scammers claim to be from a widely recognised organisation in order to gain the victim’s trust, Rapira-Davies said.

“Often it is older and more vulnerable members of our communities who are targeted and becoming victims of these scams. We urge people to have conversations with these people to help ensure they are aware of the tactics often used by scammers and don’t become victims.”

Police’s message on scams like this is simple – do not engage

with anyone on the phone if you think you are being scammed.

Hang up immediately and report the incident.

Government agencies will never ask for your information over the phone without stringent verification procedures and they will never ask for your PIN number or seek to access your computer or bank accounts remotely.

If you are in doubt as to a caller’s legitimacy, ask if you can call them back, or just hang up.

“These scammers have absolutely nothing to do with Spark,” Grant McBeath, channel leader for Spark, said.

“They like to use our name because so many New Zealanders have a Spark account – it’s a simple numbers game, picking a

company like us makes their story more plausible when you’re already with Spark.

“It’s really important that people are wary and know what to look out for, as this is the best way to protect themselves.

“Please remember that Spark will never contact you out of the blue and ask for your password, credit card or bank details. We will also never remotely access your computer through team viewer.

“If you are unsure if a call is genuine, the best thing you can do is hang up.”

Anyone who believes they are a victim of a scam, in person or online, should immediately report it to their bank and then to their local police.

The Turfbar of the Ashburton Hotel is going blue next month to support prostate cancer, September is the Prostate Cancer Foundation’s national awareness month and also their major fundraising campaign under the banner of Blue September and hundreds of businesses around the country will be doing their bit to contribute.

This year alone more than 3000 New Zealand men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and more than 600 of those will die from the disease – so funding is crucial for the foundation.

Turfbar duty manager, Jane Hamilton said the bar was looking forward to getting behind the good cause with a special event.

“On Saturday, September 8 we will be holding our Blue Do event,” she said.

“As well as having the All Blacks and Argentina match on the big screen we will be getting right into the theme of Blue September.

“We’ll be having activities such as a raffle, balloon popping for prizes and blue cocktails and mocktails.

“And all money raised will be donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand.”

As well as putting up prizes themselves, the Turfbar is on the search for local groups or organisations would like to donate a prize, or prizes to the night’s activities.

“Whether it’s a coffee, or somewhere offering a half-priced dessert we’d be grateful for anything that anyone can contribute.”

Curran kicked out of Cabinet

Clare Curran has been sacked from Cabinet and stripped of her open government portfolios after not disclosing a meeting set up using her personal email account.

The February meeting with entrepreneur Derek Handley was over his interest in the vacant Chief Technology Officer role.

It was held at 8pm in Curran’s Beehive office with nobody else present and was not put in her diary.

The next month Curran responded to a written question from National, but failed to disclose the meeting.

It was her second strike, after a similar omission in relation to a meeting with former Radio NZ boss Carol Hirschfeld earlier this year.

“That’s not good enough and that’s why she’s been removed by Cabinet,” Ardern said at a press conference at her electorate office in Morningside yesterday afternoon.

The omissions created an “impression and perception that lacks transparency and is not something I will tolerate, particularly from a Minister for Open Government”.

the issue on Monday, which was when Ardern said Curran realised her mistake.

The issue came up during the final stages of the appointment process for the CTO job vacancy.

“I believe it was a conversation working through when the minister had first ever had contact with one of the candidates.

“It was not malicious … she simply cannot recall the reason why it was not included in her diary. That’s not good enough, that’s why she has been removed from Cabinet.”

The State Services Commission will examine the CTO appointment process to ensure the Handley-Curran meeting had no bearing on process or outcome.

The SCC will report back before the appointment is made.

Handley remains a candidate for the CTO position. An appointment is expected to be made shortly.

The meeting was the first time Handley and Curran had met, Ardern said.

She said the issue was entirely about Curran’s conduct, not Handley’s.

“I want to express my sincere apologies to Mr Handley who has been brought into this issue through no fault of his own”.

Speaking in Dunedin, Curran said she was very sorry.

“I’ve let myself down, I’ve let the Prime Minister down, I’ve let my Government down.

“I take full responsibility for not following proper process. The meeting with Mr Handley should have been in the diary and my staff should have been informed.”

Megan Woods will now be Minister of Government Digital Services and Curran’s open government responsibilities will go to State Services Minister Chris Hipkins.

Mallard calls off inquiry Parliament’s Speaker Trevor Mallard has called off the inquiry into the leaking of Simon Bridges’ expenses.

Mallard has ruled it is a National Party matter and therefore not something Parliament needs to be involved in.

Mallard said he had told Bridges the inquiry was off and the National leader did not agree with the decision.

“He disagrees with it,” Mallard said. “He wants the inquiry to continue. I have indicated to him that the Parliamentary Service will co-operate if he decides that he wants to proceed with an investigation

and appropriate consents from MPs are in place.

“The general manager will make any relevant staff emails available.”

The National Party is expected to comment shortly on Mallard’s decision.

Mallard also said: “The existence of, and part of the detail of, a text both the Leader of the Opposition and I received last week has been reported on. It has now been confirmed to me that the person who leaked the details of the expenses and the texter are the same person.

“He or she has details of events that it is unlikely anyone outside the National Party would be privy to.

“The text is from someone who is clearly very disturbed and today’s publicity will almost certainly make that worse. My priority is to get appropriate support to them whether they are an MP or a staff member.”

Bridges told a media conference yesterday morning he wanted the investigation continued.

He said police had identified the person who sent him a “dark and concerning” text message claiming to be the leaker of his expenses.

person, who police have spoken to.

The National leader said he received the “dark and concerning” text message on Thursday and it was sent also to Parliament’s Speaker Trevor Mallard and a media organisation.

“The text made clear to me that it was from the leaker ... [and that] the leaker was in the National caucus,” Bridges said.

“It also made quite clear that this person had a long and serious mental health issue.

“It was my very clear view there would be significant harm to them if the investigation proceeded. It was a dark and concerning text message.

“I was very worried about it. I spoke to senior colleagues and then replied, saying my utmost concern was for the welfare of the person. Later that day I received expert advice on how to proceed.

“On Friday I informed the police with my clear concern being for the mental health and wellbeing of the individual.

“On Sunday evening police contacted me. They knew and had worked out the identity of the person concerned. They made clear the person was getting the help they needed.”

Bridges said police had not told

him the person’s identity and he understood why this was the case.

Police have confirmed they spoke to the person.

“Police assessed the information supplied as a mental health issue requiring an immediate response,” police said in a statement.

“The information provided by the National Party did not identify the individual, however their identity was established through subsequent police enquiries.

“Steps were taken as they are for any matter reported to police where there are immediate concerns for the welfare of an individual.”

The National Party was advised that Police would not disclose the individual’s identity for privacy reasons.

Police said they had dealt with the matter “entirely from a mental health perspective”.

The texter had claimed to be inside the National Party and had leaked Bridges’ expenses to punish him for being arrogant.

Bridges said he has not questioned members of his caucus about whether they sent the text.

Bridges says he believed he has the support of his colleagues and his main concern was for the wellbeing of the person who sent the text.

An industry in mourning New Zealand’s television news and journalism industry was rocked to its core this week with the passing of popular and colourful presenter Greg Boyed.

Below many of his colleagues pay their respects to a man who graced our screens for almost three decades.

eople from around New Zealand have expressed their shock and sadness at the sudden death of TVNZ news presenter Greg Boyed.

Boyed died suddenly while on a family holiday in Switzerland with his wife and young son on Monday, August 20.

His family released a statement saying he will be deeply missed.

“He was absolutely loved and adored. A treasured son, brother, husband and father, he will be deeply missed.

“Greg was a talented journalist, presenter, musician and an exceptional friend to those lucky enough to know him.

“Greg, 48, had been battling depression. Greg was the kindest and most caring man, a devoted father who cherished and loved his two children.

“We are all struggling to comes to terms with this.”

TVNZ’s head of news and current affairs, John Gillespie, said the news came as a huge shock to all at TVNZ.

“Greg was a prominent figure in our newsroom for the last 25 years. He was a wonderful man and a talented broadcaster who strongly believed in the power and importance of journalism in people’s lives. Greg was known for his warmth and kindness. It’s a very personal loss for us.

“Greg will be missed by us, he will be missed by our colleagues in the wider industry and he’ll be missed by our viewers. Our thoughts are with Greg’s whanau and friends.”

Many people took to social media to share their condolences, including Boyed’s colleagues who expressed their sadness over the news.

Three news presenter Mike McRoberts described Boyed as a “really warm and generous person”.

McRoberts worked with Boyed during the late 1990s-early-2000s at TVNZ and said he was “incredibly generous”.

“He was also involved in Archilles NZ which is the charity I’m involved with which helps disabled

athletes compete in big events.”

Boyed had been to New York as a guide and was an ambassador for the programme.

“That was typical of Greg. He was an incredibly generous person with his time.”

McRoberts said he would always remember Boyed’s humour.

“He was pretty dry, but very funny. He just had the ability to make people laugh. I know of other colleagues of his who have always talked about how relaxed they felt about working with him on the late show.”

He said Boyed’s sudden death was a huge shock and a “real upset”.

McRoberts said Boyed was a skilled journalist who performed at the top of his industry for at least two decades.

TV and radio personality Nathan Rarere said it was a “hell of shock” to read the news about Boyed.

“I shared an office/desk with him and Jody Gill when I first got transferred to Auckland to work at IRN News. He was always so enthusiastic about life and loved a laugh ... it was like sharing an office with Jon Hamm.”

Rarere described Boyed as “way too handsome and way too nice a person, but was always generous with praise and so, so encouraging in an industry full of selfish people”.

“He helped me into a taxi after a monster night at John Tulloch’s house and made sure I had cab fare to get home. Just the best of the best.”

Close friend and former journalist Rachel Grunwell was shocked and devastated by Boyed’s death.

“He was an amazing friend.

I just wish I could have helped.”

The pair were both ambassadors at Achilles New Zealand and she said Boyed took huge pleasure in helping other people.

When Boyed helped Grunwell guide a blind runner in the Rotorua Marathon a few years ago, he told her it boosted his confidence.

“He looked bullet proof but he wasn’t. He opened up to few people but when he did he had a massive heart. He was just a really kind man and he loved his kids and his family.”

She spoke of many special memories – Grunwell plays saxophone

and Boyed was learning, she said.

“He was just a really good friend.

He gave back so much, to the charity, it actually made him really happy. I’ve been crying all morning. It’s bloody devastating.”

Grunwell and another friend had breakfast with Boyed before he flew to Europe a week ago.

The pair hugged goodbye.

“It’s just a lot of shock.”

Broadaster Mike Puru has also shared his sadness at hearing the news.

“Such sad news to hear – Greg was a great man to work and hang with – always striving to be the best

he can – always asked what’s going on in the TNVZ dressing room ... always had a good laugh and a great respect for others. RIP my friend.”

Boyed was to start contributing to the National Business Review following his return from Europe.

Publisher Todd Scott said he was devastated by the news.

Politicians also shared their condolences.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said she was saddened to hear of Boyed’s passing having enjoyed her time spent sitting opposite him in the studio when being interviewed.

New Zealand First list MP Jenny Marcroft worked with Boyed for several years at IRN News in the 1990s.

“I am devastated to hear of Greg’s passing. He was a supremely talented broadcaster, admired by the wider broadcasting community,” she said.

“Knowing him was an honour and a privilege. I remember him as a kind and caring man and a pleasure to work with.”

John Bowden from Achilles New Zealand, where Boyed had been an ambassador guiding disabled athletes for the past three years, said news of Boyd’s death was devastating.

“We’ve had lots of tears and sobbing actually. It’s just unbelievable.”

Boyed as a marathon runner, was expecting to sit down with Boyed after his return from Europe to work out a running strategy.

“I don’t know how I’m going to get over it. That’s what’s hard for us who stay behind ... why?”

He described Boyed as being able to easily relate to people with disabilities.

At the Rotorua Marathon in May he guided a wheelchair-bound athlete on the 10km run. At the start she made it clear she could do the event on her own, Bowden said.

But when the pair came to a steep 800m hill and the athlete asked Boyed for help he told her: “But you said you didn’t need any help.”

It took an extra hour, but the woman completed the course under her own steam.

“That’s how Greg was and that’s how we work. We’ve lost a great man in terms of being passionate about athletes with disabilities. He could relate to any person with a disability which was unique about him.”

He summed Boyed up as “kind and passionate” and said he was also a very loving family man who had drafted in his older daughter to guide at Archilles New Zealand.

Boyed was known for his work on some of television’s most recognisable shows – including One News, Fair Go, Q+A, Close Up, Target and Seven Sharp.

Pepper crust tarakihi, potatoes, tomato and basil salad Serves: 2 400g tarakihi fillets 5T olive oil 1 jar of Moroccan lemon pepper 50g melted butter 3 peeled and diced agria potatoes 5 cloves of garlic in their skins 3 truss tomatoes 1 small bunch of basil 2 sprigs rosemary ■ Place the diced potatoes in a bowl and pour over the melted butter and 3T olive oil, season well with salt, add the rosemary sprigs and cloves of garlic, mix well. Spread on an oven tray and cook at 200°C for 20 minutes or until cooked and golden.

■ Meanwhile, slice the tomatoes and arrange on a plate, season with salt and pepper and drizzle over extra virgin olive oil. Remove all the leaves from the basil leaves, tear them into pieces and sprinkle over the tomato.

■ Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a non-stick pan over a medium heat.

■ Meanwhile tip the Moroccan lemon pepper on to a plate and press just one side of the fish into the pepper.

Place the fish in the pan, pepper side down and cook for 30 seconds

before turning over. Turn the heat down in the pan and add a knob of butter then cook the fish for a further 3 to 4 minutes. Remove the fish to a warm plate and allow to rest.

■ To serve, arrange the potatoes, fish and tomato salad on two plates and garnish with a sprig of basil. Delicious with a glass of pinot gris!

■ Chef’s tip: If you like garlic don’t remove the cloves from the cooked potatoes. The cooked garlic is delicious when squeezed out of its skin and eaten with the potatoes and fish!

The bank’s loans and advances were up from $17.8b to $18.3b while its deposits and other borrowings also rose from $15.98b to $16.17b.

Kiwi Group Holdings saw its underlying profit rise 3 per cent to $133m.

Its net profit after tax was up from $58m to $122m.

TVNZ enjoys earnings increase State-owned broadcaster Television New Zealand is counting its first year of stable revenues since 2012 as a win as it reports a 58.6 per cent increase in operating earnings for the year to June 30.

Total revenues of $318.5 million, an increase of 0.6 per cent on the previous year, produced operating earnings of $24.6 million before interest, tax, depreciation, amortisation and changes in the value of financial instruments.

On a profit before tax basis, earnings were up 265 per cent to $5.1 million, reflecting the fact that TVNZ had to write down $12.4 million against “onerous” contract terms for some of its international content. That impact has flowed through the accounts now, creating a dramatic bounceback in reported earnings as a result.

“From a financial perspective, the most significant shift is stable topline revenue,” TVNZ chief ex-

ecutive Kevin Kenrick told BusinessDesk. “This is the first time we have stable revenue in the past six years.”

The challenge now was to continue to replace revenues from traditional ‘linear’ TV with revenue derived from its growing revenues from online streaming, which had “hit its straps” going in the second half of the last financial year and was continuing to show strong momentum in growth, he said.

Also assisting was a continued reduction in operating costs, which fell 2.4 per cent to $293.9 million.

While TVNZ had continued to grow its share of total advertising spending and the trend back towards a greater share of ad spend going to traditional TV had continued, Kenrick conceded that retail advertising had been “softening in recent months” in line with declining business sentiment.

“Retail is tough at the moment,” he said, although the company remained optimistic about ad spend growing in the lead-up to Christmas.

Total advertising revenue was $301 million, compared to $299.1 million the previous year.

Growth in online streaming saw TVNZ On Demand crack 100 million streamed views in the year to July, and a 15.2 per cent increase over the year to June 30.

Its social media platform, Re, which plays shorter content and aims to attract a younger audience back to TVNZ, had recorded 30 million views during the year, with efforts to monetise the new channel a priority for the year ahead.

The revenue model for Re would concentrate on partnerships and sponsorships rather than traditional advertising, Kenrick said.

Jurkovich said this would be the end of costs associated with the canned IT project.

It might be the end of the financial impact on Kiwibank but shareholders ACC, the New Zealand Superannuation Fund and New Zealand Post are said to be in a dispute over how much information NZ Post disclosed to them about the risks involved with the IT project.

Lower funding costs helped to boost earnings at Kiwibank but more costs linked to its failed IT project continued to weigh on the business.

The state-owned bank saw its net profit after tax rise from $53m to $115m in the year to June 30.

But the big jump mainly reflected a poor result in 2017 after it took a big hit from its decision to quit its CoreMod IT project.

The 2018 financial year result was dragged down by higher expenses associated with the IT project.

It booked an $8m impairment loss and incurred a further $7m in operating costs relating to the wind-down of the project.

Sky Network Television, which has been grappling with a loss of subscribers to online rivals, wrote down its value by $360 million at the end of its financial year, resulting in a $240.7 million annual loss.

The Auckland-based company wrote down the value of its goodwill to $1.07 billion from $1.43 billion, which pushed its annual accounts for the year ended June 30 into the red. Excluding the writedown, Sky TV’s underlying profit increased 2.6 per cent to $119.3 million from $116.3 million a year earlier. Sales revenue fell 6 per cent to a six-year low of $839.7 million.

New Zealand’s largest pay-TV company has been haemorrhaging customers with 57,055 leaving in the latest financial year, reducing the total to 768,000, although the company noted it had curtailed the loss in the second half to 11,049 customers compared with 46,006 in the first half.

To better compete with online rivals such as Netflix, Sky TV has cut prices and turned its focus to offering more content through internet and mobile services.

Black dog – we are not doing enough I

t’s been a tough week in media circles following the death of popular television news and current affairs presenter Greg Boyed.

Watching the raw emotion and feeling that emanated through the television set as colleagues of Boyed reported on the news of his death was tough watching and showed just how deeply the actions of one can impact on so many.

The circumstances around his passing haven’t been exactly outlined for various reasons, but the attachments of where people can go if they need to seek help or advice suggest that one of New Zealand’s most silent killers had a role to play.

And again we dance around the subject as though it is some sort of dangerous creature that is going to shove a sharp barb into us and let poison run riot through our body if we dare utter the word.

The truth of the matter is that the subject is very real and therefore should be something we talk about more.

Latest statistics have shown

668 people in New Zealand were claimed by the universallyknown black dog depression in the 2017/18 year.

That is 668 people too many.

Time, money and resources are being pumped into trying to combat such perilously high numbers, but are they actually working? Is it actually making a difference? The numbers would suggest not.

The 2017/18 figures are the highest they have been since data began being collated 10 years ago.

It’s one line we don’t want to see spiking up, this one definitely needs to be trending downwards.

It was public knowledge that Boyed had endured his own

battles with depression over the years and that’s a horrible battle to have to face for anyone, but despite the knowledge of this, it unfortunately wasn’t enough to help him.

And there are so many people out there who are probably in a similar boat.

They’ve spoken about their battles.

People have shown sympathy and offered their support, but that support can’t always be given 24 hours a day and seven days a week.

Where the key learnings and improvement need to come is how we get to a point where people know they have somewhere to turn when they feel like there

is nowhere left to turn.

We’re a lot better than we used to be about getting the information out there, but the truth is we need to do much better.

Recommendations made in the past 12 months around better information sharing between healthcare professionals will ensure that adequate and up-todate training in risk assessment is provided. That will be a solid start, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

You are never going to be able to stop everyone from doing the unthinkable, but you would like to think that we can get life to a place where it’s not such a prevalent part of everyday life for so many people.

ey – can you keep this one quiet for me?

I know at times I have written things that people have talked about, but seriously you need to keep this one a secret, along with the two-and-a-half retired readers from Allenton and the fish and chip shop owner who reads this just before dumping half a dozen onion rings on my feeble chicken scratchings.

I have a secret that might not be the best to reveal, but my problem is that with the introduction of the anti-plastic bag mentality, I believe a feature of my past might come back to haunt me.

So I have been in schools and education for pretty much most of my life and currently I am the Big Kahuna of the most awesome school in Tinwald.

Now, what no-one else knows, apart from my family and my standard one teacher, is I have a personality problem. I suffer from Sillius Naughtious. Yep, I grew up in a twice-a-Sunday church family, became a principal and I have an almost irresistible urge to be silly or naughty or both at the same time.

I have tried every known remedy to help me rein in this debilitating desire to do dumb deeds, but nothing has worked.

I once went to a six-fingered North Korean mystic healer who chanted Billy Idol lyrics while she plucked my eyebrows and sprinkled them into a cup of Mountain Dew. She then read my future from the cup and gave me six months worth of crushed snail shells to add to my Weetbix. It didn’t help, but actually when my eyebrows grew back they met in the middle so now I look like Bert from the muppets.

Frankly the idea of replacing plastic bags has got me sweating more than an underage drinker in a police raid. If they replace plastic bags, a logical next step would be to replace our plastic

rubbish bins. Now if that was to happen, I bet we would go back to the ‘70s and use those big brown paper rubbish bags we had when I was a kid.

Nothing wrong with that you say? Well, it was a typical mid1970s day when I was biking to school with Glen Brown.

I was decked out in the finest brown corduroy shorts known to exist, topped off with matching Charlie Brown shoes.

As we biked along, a flush of Sillius Naughtious ripped through me quicker than warm pee in a wetsuit.

I made the executive decision to kick a rubbish bag as I rode past it. My Darwinesk Evolved Brain then recognised that if you kicked the bag where there was a wet patch, it would split open and spill mutton chops on to the

road.

Now for some reason Glen Brown didn’t join in and so I took one for the team and proceeded to merrily destroy rubbish bags all the way to Cloverlea School.

At some point a vehicle drove past just as I was unloading a Dan Carter left foot punt to a particularly bulging bag. I thought nothing of it and eventually arrived at school – where I was promptly apprehended by the headmaster and briefly questioned before being dealt to.

Well that went wrong I thought. How could he know what I had done, anyway as long as my father didn’t find out, I was okay with the stinging in my hand from the strap. Or so I thought.

Dad got home some time after five and joined us for dinner

soon after. At dinner we had to go around and tell everyone what we did that day. I loved this and took to it like bugs to a motorcycle helmet. Halfway through my brilliant oral explanation of my day that featured me as the hero, my father asked if the headmaster had spoken to me.

Silence – deathly, gut-squeezing, white-knuckle silence. Three siblings and one mother turned and stared. Inside my little brown corduroy shorts, I was shaking harder than a pensioner in a southerly.

Yip, I ventured – we talked about how much rubbish there was around the school and how I volunteered to pick it up! A brilliant lie that made me the hero, except Dad’s face told me he knew.

So it turns out my father’s punishment was more long-term than the headmaster’s – I lost the use of my bike for a month, it was literally strung up in the garage where I couldn’t reach it, and I couldn’t sit down after dinner that was for sure.

Now how did my father know what I had done on the way to school and how did the headmaster know? Well, remember that car that passed me as I was destroying another bag – it was my dad on his way to work.

When he arrived at his office he phoned the school!

Now you know my trepidation for this anti-plastic bag campaign.

What if we had brown paper rubbish bags that were easy to split when wet? What if I rode past them on my motorbike?

I feel better for telling you now, but please, don’t tell anyone else.

Scott Morrison new PM Australia government lawmakers yesterday elected Treasurer Scott Morrison as the next prime minister in a ballot that continues an era of extraordinary political instability.

Morrison defeated the key challenger Peter Dutton, a former Cabinet minister, by a vote 45-40.

Dutton’s supporters had forced incumbent Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to hold the leadership ballot. Turnbull did not contest the ballot and later confirmed his intention to quit politics.

“I’ll be leaving the Parliament ... not before too long,” he told reporters.

His resignation would cause a by-election that could cost the government its single-seat majority. It could also encourage Morrison to soon call general elections.

Dutton’s failure prevents the Australian policy shifting to the hard right, although there has been little policy discussion in the leadership crisis.

Turnbull condemned Dutton supporters for bringing down his leadership in an intense and bruising campaign, which the prime minister described as “an insurgency,” which went public on Tuesday.

“Many Australians will be shaking their head in disbelief at what’s been done,” Turnbull said.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop had been among the favorites and could have become Australia’s second female prime minister. She was rejected on the first round of voting.

A beleaguered Turnbull demanded the names of lawmakers in the conservative

Liberal Party who wanted him to go before he would allow them to choose a new prime minister at a meeting at Parliament House on Friday. The names would prove a majority of his government had abandoned him.

The bare minimum majority of 43 signatures were provided shortly before the meeting started. They included more than one Turnbull supporter who signed to break the impasse.

Turnbull has become the fourth prime minister to be dumped by his or her own party before serving a full three-year term since the revolving door to the prime minister’s office started in 2010. The trend is universally hated among Australians, who expect they will get to judge their leaders at the ballot box.

Sheldon ends Big Bang As fans of The Big Bang Theory come to terms with the news the US comedy is finally coming to an end, questions are being raised as to why producers would suddenly call time on the toprating series. According to Entertainment Weekly, the network, CBS, was trying to negotiate two more seasons, however actor Jim Parsons (who stars as Sheldon Cooper) decided to walk away from the show. EW reports that the two-year deal would have netted each cast member $69 million if they agreed to stay on, however Parsons “was ready to say goodbye”.

The album principals, father Neil and son Liam, get the rest of the family involved — mother Sharon, son Elroy, nephew Harper — and also provide room and board to one of Neil’s new Fleetwood Mac bandmates, Mick Fleetwood. On the surface, Lightsleeper is closer to the Finn family’s foundational Split Enz era than to the more renowned Crowded House productions, with dreamy atmospheres, multi-section song structures and hazy shades of melody providing the framework, not tight pop songs with instantly memorable refrains.

So, what do we need to know?

As the hard-nosed enforcer behind some of the federal government’s toughest policies, Scott Morrison has always liked to talk about dolling out tough love.

Now, as Australia’s next prime minister, he may need to dish it out in spades.

Morrison was painted as a Father Christmas figure before this year’s budget, with the treasurer promising sweeping tax cuts and sweeteners for older Australians.

But it wasn’t always beer and skittles the self-confessed “happy clapper” and Cronulla Sharks NRL fan was dispensing.

Morrison, a former tourism executive, rose to prominence by spearheading the “stop the boats” approach to border protection as immigration minister to Tony Abbott.

His hardline stance toward asylum seekers bewildered some observes, given his devout Christian beliefs.

But he professed a deep belief in the righteousness of crushing the evil peoplesmuggling trade and preserving the safety of those on board rickety boats.

Morrison was elected to parliament in

2007. His electorate of Cook in the Sutherland Shire marks the point of arrival of the First Fleet in Botany Bay. During a nine-month stint as social services minister, Morrison was also forced to sell the Abbott government’s deeply unpopular 2014 budget, which was laced with a cocktail of deep welfare cuts.

Morrison has been far more pragmatic in the role of treasurer, performing backflips on a range of unpopular government policies.

Immensely unpopular measures including a Medicare levy hike, superannuation changes and big business tax cuts were each eventually cast aside like water off a duck’s back.

He also avoided falling into the trap of immediate predecessors of making outlandish promises about surpluses.

Earlier this week, Morrison stood in the prime minister’s courtyard and was asked to rule out having any leadership ambitions. “This is my leader and I’m ambitious for him,” he told reporters, throwing his arm around Malcolm Turnbull with a grin.

In reality, he has always held aspirations to lead the Liberal Party, despite being largely unknown by ordinary voters.

Prior to entering parliament, Morrison ran Tourism Australia before a successful stint as state director of the NSW Liberal Party.

He will need to harness the full grab-bag of skills honed in these two trades after winning a Liberal leadership ballot over Peter Dutton by 45 votes to 40 in Canberra on Friday.

Morrison went into the bitter contest as a “consensus candidate” who many colleagues hoped would bridge a divide between the party’s warring moderate and conservative wings.

He split the vote of the party’s right faction and scored the so-called “Anyone but Dutton” vote from some on the left.

Liberal MPs will now limp away from the ugly insurrection battered and bruised.

It is now up to Morrison to repair the dented egos, broken hearts and despondent souls of Liberal colleagues left to rebuild a party reduced to rubble.

Ed King dies Ed King, a former guitarist for Lynyrd Skynyrd who helped write several of the group’s hits including “Sweet Home Alabama,” has died in Nashville, Tennessee, according to a family friend.

He was 68. Scott Coopwood said King died Wednesday due to cancer. King joined the band in 1972 and was part of its first three albums with its distinct three-guitar sound. He is credited on several of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s songs, including Saturday Night Special and Workin’ for MCA, and his voice can be heard providing the opening count on Sweet Home Alabama.

Hurricane pummels Hawaii Hurricane Lane unleashed torrents of rain and landslides that blocked roads on Hawaii’s mostly rural Big Island yesterday as residents and tourists in the state’s biggest city braced for the dangerous storm to come their way.

Emergency workers rescued five people from a flooded house in Hilo after a nearby gulch overflowed, said Hawaii County Managing Director Wil Okabe. They weren’t injured and were taken to a shelter, he said.

On the state’s most populated island, which is about 320km north of the Big Island, employees of the Sheraton Waikiki resort filled sandbags to protect the Oahu oceanfront hotel from surging surf. Stores along Waikiki’s glitzy Kalakaua Avenue stacked sandbags along the bottom of their glass windows to prepare for heavy rain and flash flooding.

Hurricane Lane, which was still offshore, already lashed the Big Island with nearly 50cm of rain in nearly 24 hours and was moving closer, putting it and Maui “in the thick” of the storm, National Weather Service meteorologist Melissa Dye said. The agency says the storm has weakened to a Category 3 but can still cause major damage.

The hurricane, which was packing maximum sustained winds of 193km/h, was expected to move close to or over portions of the main islands bringing dangerous surf of 6m, forecasters said.

Lane was not projected to make a direct hit on the islands, but officials warned that even a lesser blow could do significant harm.

“Rain has been nonstop for the last half hour or so, and winds are just starting to pick up,” said Pablo Akira Beimler, who lives on the coast in Honokaa on the Big Island. “Our usually quiet stream is raging right now.”

Hawaii’s biggest hotels are confident they can keep their guests safe as long as they stay inside, said Mufi Hannemann, CEO of Hawaii Tourism and Lodging Association.

Members of his association, which include the state’s major hotels, are shifting into high gear with their emergency management plans, he said.

The Marriott Resort Waikiki Beach in Honolulu designated a ballroom on the third floor as a shelter for guests and began removing lounge chairs from around the pool and bar area.

The Queen Kapiolani Hotel brought construction equipment inside from a pool deck that’s under renovation. The hotel will encourage guests to stay in their rooms if the weather worsens and evacuate to hallways if it becomes necessary to avoid windows.

John Lennon’s killer has been denied parole for a 10th time and will remain behind bars for at least two more years. Mark David Chapman appeared before New York’s parole board earlier this week. In a denial decision obtained

by The Associated Press, the board said it had determined Chapman’s release “would be incompatible with the welfare and safety of society and would so deprecate the serious nature of the crime as to undermine respect for the law”. Chapman, 63, shot and killed the former Beatle outside Lennon’s Manhattan apartment on December 8, 1980. He is serving 20-years-to-life in a correctional facility in New York.

Charger causes death A man in Germany has died after a battery-charging device exploded, firing an object into his chest. The incident happened in an office building in Hamburg, a police spokesman said. Florian Abbenseth said that “due to the force of the explosion, a 26-yearold received life-threatening injuries. He later died”. Co-workers were treated for shock after the incident. Abbenseth said the device that exploded was “a regular charger for two AA batteries” of the kind used in small electronic devices such as radios.

He said the cause of the explosion was still being investigated and was not immediately able to name the make or model of the charging device.

Heinz fined over misleading toddler food Food giant Heinz has been hit with a $2.25 million fine after misleading consumers by claiming one of its snacks, marketed for toddlers, was beneficial for young children.

The Federal Court imposed the penalty yesterday with Justice Richard White also ordering the company to set up a consumer protection compliance program.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission had called for a $10 million fine but Heinz argued that a penalty of about $400,000 was a more appropriate figure.

In a recent hearing, counsel for the ACCC Tom Duggan said the penalty imposed had to be sufficient to act as a deterrent against similar conduct by the company

and others operating in the food industry.

He argued the company’s conduct in representations on the packaging of its Little Kids Shredz was “egregious” because of the potential implications for the diet and oral health of young children and involved both “wilful blindness” and “recklessness”.

But Michael O’Brien, for Heinz,

said there were no facts to support the company’s conduct being egregious and the court had ruled that while it made an error, it did not intend to mislead.

In a judgment in March, Justice Richard White found the prominent statements on the packaging, that the Shredz snacks comprised 99 per cent fruit and vegetables together with the pic-

tures of the fruit and vegetables, conjured impressions of nutritiousness and health.

“I am satisfied that each of the Heinz nutritionists ought to have known that a representation that a product containing approximately two-thirds sugar was beneficial to the health of children aged one to three years was misleading,” he said.

The Shredz products were a dehydrated snack made from 99 per cent fruit and vegetable ingredients and did not contain any preservatives, artificial colours or flavours but had a high sugar content.

More than one million were sold before the products were pulled from shelves in May 2016.

Three villages southwest of Berlin have been evacuated as a wildfire the size of 400 soccer fields spread. The Germany news agency dpa reported yesterday that about 500 people had to leave their homes because of the fire in Treuenbrietzen, some 50 kilometres outside of Berlin. Winds blew the smoke to Berlin, where people in some neighbourhoods were asked to keep their windows closed.

Germany has seen a long, hot summer with almost no rain and large parts of the country are on high alert.

Bathroom death A woman, whose decomposing body was found in her bathroom, fell backwards while sedated with a combination of prescription drugs, a West Australian coroner has found. Police found the body of Jackie-Lee Marama Smith, 56, in March 2015 and she had to be identified through her fingerprints.

The coroner said the death was accidental, despite the tramadol in her system.

Main Sources of the MCAS’s Cash and Resources Mid Canterbury Animal Shelters main funding source is through donations received, membership fees, fundraising events and the adoption fees paid for animals rehomed through the shelter. Membership fees help cover operation costs of circulating notification and minutes of meeting to members.

Main Methods Used by MCAS to Raise Funds: We rely on our own fundraising abilities to operate, such as the Bouncy Castle we hire out.

We rely completely on private donations, and the fees collected

from the adoption of each animal help to offset some of the costs involved in providing care for the animals and preparing an animal for placement into a new home. We receive no government funding or any funds from any national animal welfare organizations.

MCAS’s Reliance on Volunteers and Donated Goods or Services Mid Canterbury Animal Shelters activities are entirely volunteer operated. On average, in total the weekly minimum number of hours of the volunteers would be approximately 1-20, (dependant on roles) hours per week, this can fluctuate during peak kitten

season. The Committee and Financial members volunteer their time to set strategies, attend meetings, and provide foster care and general daily management of the shelter business. We rely heavily on the donations of food, bedding and goods to assist in the operation of fostering animals in care, and to cover cost of vet treatment and care required.

Ready for turf battle

Mid/South Canterbury hockey supremacy is up for grabs for two Mid Canterbury senior club sides in Timaru today.

Mid Canterbury has a team in both today’s senior men’s and women’s finals, and both of them – Hampstead and Wakanui – were the favourites to take the titles out.

Hampstead has gone through the whole Mid/South Canterbury senior women’s hockey competition unbeaten this season, with their closest results having been a couple of draws with Geraldine.

But that isn’t the team they face in today’s final.

They are set to face Cambridge, a side that they’ve already played

four times this season and beaten on each occasion, including two weeks ago in the one versus two semifinal which secured them their place in the final.

Cambridge then had to play Geraldine last week for the right to take on Hampstead in the final, and narrowly squeaked past them to do just that.

Last year’s beaten finalists Hampstead are the favourites on form this season, but all winter their coach Rex Turnbull has been ensuring his players haven’t got ahead of themselves, reminding them that it was no good going through a season unbeaten if you lost the one that mattered at the end.

“We know it’s going to be a tough game, we know what we

are in for and our destiny is in our own hands,” Turnbull said. “(Cambridge) have improved throughout the season, so we are expecting a tough battle, but if we stick to our game plan we will be okay.”

Two weeks ago, Hampstead beat Cambridge 4-1 and while Cambridge were fighting it out for the second place in the final against Geraldine last weekend, Hampstead was taking on Craighead and winning 9-0. It was a game with nothing riding on it for Hampstead, but it was a vital game in their build-up to the final, ensuring they kept their momentum going.

Meanwhile, in the senior men’s competition, Wakanui haven’t had it all their own way this sea-

son, dropping a couple of round robin games, but they did enough to finish top of the table.

They played Northern Hearts in the one versus two semi-final a fortnight ago and won 5-1. The win put Wakanui straight into the final while Northern Hearts and Cambridge played off for the other spot in the final, with Cambridge taking out an epic encounter which came down to a penalty shoot-out.

Wakanui player/coach Sam Moore was sideline watching that game in Timaru because his team didn’t have one last weekend.

Unlike the women’s competition which had six teams, the men’s competition only had five, meaning Wakanui had no-one to play last weekend, which wasn’t ideal

with a big final looming.

They’d tried to find a game to keep their momentum going but to no avail and while they’ll head to Timaru light on game time, there will be no shortage of determination.

Wakanui has been a strong side in recent years, but the past couple of seasons haven’t been their best. They failed to make the top four last year and are eager to get back to the top.

After their semifinal win over Northern Hearts, Moore said he wasn’t worried whether it was Hearts or Cambridge they met in the final, because he was confident they had the goods to defeat both.

Now, they just have to prove it on the turf in Timaru today.

Last-gasp goal puts Methven in final

A goal in the dying seconds stole victory from under Ashburton College A’s noses and sealed Methven a place in the 2018 Mid Canterbury Netball ACL premier one final on Thursday night.

Methven A had trailed the entire game until Leanne Clemens calmly slotted that final goal with six seconds left on the clock to win it for her side 29-28, breaking the hearts of the young college players.

Methven A will now take on Celtic A in the final after they took out the night’s other, vastly different semifinal, downing Mt Somers 47-27.

That result may have never really looked in doubt, but it was a different story in the game between College A and Methven A. College A led 8-6 at quarter-time and had extended their lead to 1612 at half-time.

Methven A roared back into the game in the third quarter, tying the scores up a couple of times but never actually taking the lead, and, at three-quarter time, College A’s lead had been reduced to just one at 22-21.

College A still looked to have the edge, but Methven A wasn’t going away and with just one minute left on the clock they drew level again at 28-all to set up an intense final 60 seconds.

College A had the centre pass and got the ball to the shooting circle, but what could have been the winning shot missed and Methven A pounced on the rebound and, despite a huge defensive effort from College, managed to get the ball to the steady hands of Clemens who slotted the winning goal.

Methven A coach Maree Firth said she was stoked with the way her girls dug deep and never gave up.

“Someone said to me after the game ‘how’s your heart?’. I think my heart ran away,” Firth said.

She said College A played well and fought all the way.

“We were never out of it, but we were never in it either,” she said.

“We knew that we had some mature heads and we just wanted to play percentage netball.”

While gutted to have fallen so short, College A coach Kaye Kennedy said she was proud of how far her girls had come this season.

She said if someone had asked her in round one if her girls would be in the semi-finals and getting so close, she’d have told them her young side wasn’t ready yet.

“I’m proud of the girls because they have come such a long way and it was just a great game of netball and a great spectacle for the spectators,” Kennedy said. “(Methven’s) experience probably showed in the end and we had a couple of umpiring decisions that didn’t go our way at crucial times, but you can’t control that, that’s just the way it is.”

In the night’s second semifinal, Mt Somers faced a huge ask against this season’s frontrunners, the unbeaten Celtic A. The two sides met in the final round last week and Celtic A won by 20 and although Mt Somers looked like

they were going to push them a lot harder this week when they trailed by just a couple of goals mid-way through the second quarter, by fulltime the margin was again 20 goals.

Celtic A was up 9-5 in the first quarter when they lost centre Julia McLeod with an ankle injury, but Debbie Summerfield picked up where she’d left off and Celtic A led 11-6 at quarter-time.

Mt Somers rallied in the second quarter and got back to within a couple of goals before Celtic A really put the foot down. They picked up intercepts across the court and put together a string of goals to lead 25-15 at half time.

By three-quarter time the margin was 17, at 37-20, and although the final quarter was closer, the game was already decided.

Celtic A coach Angela Leadley said her side played as a team and looked after each other.

“Sala Bueta (goal shoot) owned that court, demanding the ball.

She has just improved out of sight this season and she kept us in the hunt for a while there,” Leadley said.

Mt Somers player/coach Kate Oliver said the game didn’t feel as one-sided as the scoreline suggested and she was proud of her side.

Mt Somers were the new kids on the block this season, forming a new team and starting in premier two before being promoted to premier one after the first round.

To make the semifinals of the top flight was a big achievement and Oliver said they were now focused on finishing third.

While Celtic A and Methven A play off in the big show next week, Mt Somers and College A will square off in the third place playoff.

Hampstead A and Celtic B played off for fifth place on Thursday night and ended up sharing it, after the game ended in a 30-all draw.

In the premier two semi-finals on Thursday night United A and Southern A produced big wins to seal places in next week’s premier two final. United A beat Celtic C 54-17 while Southern A beat Ashburton College B 44-23, while Methven B won the play-off for fifth against Rakaia A 35-30.

United A and Southern A both started their seasons in premier one, but were relegated to premier two after rounds one and two.

No fears of netball exodus after exemption Netball New Zealand insist they don’t fear a player exodus, despite granting two exemptions in as many weeks for players to potentially play overseas.

The latest player to move away from New Zealand’s netball premiership is Maria Folau, who has ended her nine-year-long career with the Northern Mystics to make a full-time move to Sydney to join her husband, Wallabies and Waratahs star, Israel.

When making the decision, Folau almost called time on her international netball career, but the veteran goal attack was granted a 12-month exemption by Netball NZ to remain eligible for the Silver Ferns’ 2019 international season.

Folau is the second Silver Fern to be granted a trans-Tasman exemption in the past fortnight, after midcourter Laura Langman.

Langman, who was named in

the Ferns 2018-19 squad last week, was barred from selection in 2017 when she played for the Sunshine Coast Lightning in Australia’s Super Netball Competition.

However, with the Ferns needing a boost in talent and experience after their disastrous Commonwealth Games campaign, Netball NZ have changed their tune, allowing her to represent the Ferns despite uncertainty over whether she will play her fran-

chise netball in Australia or New Zealand.

Such decisions has led to fears that the recent exemptions would see more players test their luck to play across the ditch, but Netball New Zealand CEO Jennie Wyllie said they weren’t concerned.

“The board have been really clear that the circumstances around the eligibility policy haven’t changed and exemptions are considered in exceptional cir-

cumstances and with both Maria and Laura that’s what we had in front of us,” Wyllie explained to Radio Sport.

“We are going to look at our selection policy and process as part two of our review but I think in this circumstance we’re looking at it on a case by case basis, these are exceptional circumstances with different elements that go into each of these decisions.”

Tinwald starter wins gold

Ashburton’s Tinwald Cycling Club has produced another world champion cyclist.

Bailey O’Donnell lives in Prebbleton now, but for most of his young career to date he has lived in Ashburton and been a Tinwald Cycling Club member.

Last weekend he was part of the New Zealand Cycling team pursuit team that won gold at the UCI junior track cycling world championships in Switzerland.

Rob Hooper from the Tinwald club said while he now rode out of Christchurch, O’Donnell was another shining example of the club being a great foundation and springboard for promising young cyclists to go on to bigger and better things.

“It’s a real thrill when you see past members or current members on the world stage and winning a world title. It’s a huge thing for everyone and reinforces that what we are doing down here is right,” Hooper said.

“It would equal any other club around, potentially, when you look at riders that we have produced. We really do box above our weight.”

O’Donnell began his cycling career with the Tinwald club and showed promise at an early age.

“I think it’s like anything, if you work hard at something you are going to get the results. It’s hard to say with cycling if you’re a natural, but he always sat well on the bike and he’s got a good way about him, and he just worked hard and had really good sup-

port from the other riders and his family.

“He just made the most of a pretty good ability, really.”

He moved to Prebbleton around a year ago with his family, but still came back to race in a few Tinwald races last summer when his busy schedule allowed.

O’Donnell started out in his cycling career at a time when Tinwald’s Jason Christie and Alex Hooper were among New Zealand’s most promising juniors and Lauren Ellis was making waves in New Zealand women’s cycling circles.

She went on to win silver in the points race on the track at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, and before her, Hayden Roulston took what he’d learned as a youngster with the Tinwald

club and won two silvers and a bronze at the Commonwealth Games, and a silver and a bronze at the Olympics.

Hooper said world titles were hard to come by in cycling. There were no age-group world championships, there was just juniors and open.

So, to take a winner’s jersey was a huge feat.

O’Donnell teamed up with George Jackson, Corbin Strong and Finn Fisher-Black and beat off a challenge from France to claim the 4000m team pursuit title in Aigle, Switzerland.

After the world track championships all four headed to Wales, where they were due to line up as part of Team Skoda Fruzio for the Junior Tour of Wales which got under way yesterday.

Former Dragons and Sharks forward Lance Thompson has died according to reports in Australian media. He was 40.

Thompson played more than 200 games for the Dragons including the 1999 grand final defeat to the Melbourne Storm. He retired from the NRL in 2008 after three seasons with the Sharks. Police Media told NRL.com the death is not being treated as suspicious.

League test likely An end-of-season rugby league test match between Australia and Tonga is closer to being given the green light following a meeting involving leading Kiwi officials.

The New Zealand Rugby League confirmed chief executive Greg Peters and chairman Reon Edwards met NRL boss Todd Greenberg in Sydney on Wednesday, to attempt to make a deal for the historic match in Auckland. However, Peters said there was no guarantee a match slated for October 20 will go ahead. “We have bounced around a number of scenarios with Todd and his team and there are ongoing discussions, but we haven’t landed on a fixed position yet,” he told media.

Blazer for honest toiler

T

he 2018 rugby season has already delivered Angus Lindsay one of the highlights of his playing career, but he is hoping that is just the start.

The 27-year-old loose forward was part of the Celtic senior club side which won Mid Canterbury Rugby’s Watters Cup outright for the first time in 18 years a few weeks ago and now he is part of the Mid Canterbury rugby team that is eyeing up another piece of silverware that has eluded the side for the past couple of seasons.

It is his third season playing for Mid Canterbury and when the team runs out on to the field in Foxton against HorowhenuaKapiti today in their opening 2018 Heartland Championship game, it will be a special occasion for Lindsay.

It will be his blazer game.

When a player reaches 17 caps for the side, a blazer is presented to them after the game.

Why 17 was the magic number isn’t clear, but Lindsay is excited to become the latest player in the team to reach the milestone.

Hailing from Tauranga originally, Lindsay studied at Otago University before work brought him to Ashburton in 2013. An accountant by day, Lindsay is one of a few office workers in the Mid Canterbury team.

He joined the Celtic club a year after Mid Canterbury had won the Meads Cup. He remembered watching a few Mid Canterbury games and thinking that if he set his mind to it he could make the team one day.

So he worked hard, and made it.

With 2018 being his third season, Lindsay is one of the more experienced players in the side. There were 14 players in this year’s squad of 25 whose total caps are still in single figures.

Mid Canterbury coach Sean Carter said Lindsay was a good, honest toiler who always rose to the occasion.

Lindsay said that was probably a fair assessment.

“I put my head down and do what I can. I give 100 per cent the whole game and just get on with it and don’t complain about stuff that happens on the field,” he said.

He is generally a pretty clean player, although he did receive a yellow card off the back of a string of team penalties in Celtic’s Watters Cup final win over Southern.

It was the first card he’d received in the four years he’d been in Mid Canterbury and fortunately it didn’t cost his team the win, Lindsay said.

“The win had been such a long time coming for the club and to be able to do that for the club and bring it home was probably one of the top moments in my rugby career,” Lindsay said.

Now, he is hoping to add another title to that to top off the season – the Meads Cup.

Last year, Lindsay was part of the Mid Canterbury team that missed out on the top four Meads Cup finals in the Heartland Championship. But they did finish with some silverware; they went on to win the Lochore Cup (for the next top four).

This year,

they are determined to do better.

While the top four and the Meads Cup finals was the ultimate aim, they are taking it step by step and Lindsay said a win in today’s opening round would be a fantastic start.

“It’s a relatively short season with only eight round robin games, so you want to start off by winning so that we aren’t playing catch up to make the top four at the end,” Lindsay said.

Horowhenua-Kapiti was the runner-up to Wanganui in last year’s Meads Cup and Lindsay and his team mates know they will be tough to beat at home today.

“They will have a big forward pack that will

take us on up front, and I think it might be quite wet up there so it might be quite a forwards orientated game,” Lindsay said.

“You always want to win the first game and get the season going the way you want it to go straight away. It would be a big moment in our season.”

Lindsay was confident the Mid Canterbury team this season had the goods to take the whole thing out.

“We are not the biggest team but we have a lot of speed and a lot of talent and that should take us through, I think,” he said.

Angus Lindsay will run out on to the field in Foxton against Horowhenua-Kapiti today, in his blazer game for Mid Canterbury.

If Mid Canterbury can beat Horowhenua-Kapiti in the first round of rugby’s Heartland Championship in Foxton today, it would be a huge confidence boost for the new-look side.

With a new coaching team and 12 new faces that didn’t feature in their 2017 campaign, round one would be a chance to see just where they were at this season, coach Sean Carter said.

The team has suffered two losses over the past two weekends in build-up games, against South Canterbury and Canterbury Metro, but Carter isn’t dwelling on those. The games were a chance to test things and find combinations, before the competition proper got under way.

He and co-coaches Jason Rickard and Dale Palmer have made just a few changes to the Mid Canterbury side which lost to Canterbury Metro last weekend, for today’s game.

Andrew Letham moves to the bench, while Isireli Masiwini comes in to second five where Carter hopes he’ll showcase his strong ball-carrying skills and set his outside backs up well.

Seta Koroitamana missed last weekend’s final pre-season hit out due to sickness, but returns to the fray in the seven jersey today, while Jarred Percival will also start at first-five after being away last weekend.

Carter said after taking into consideration both the opposition and the fact it could be wet, they’d gone with a four/three split on the bench, opting to take a whole replacement front row as well as Tom Blyth to cover lock and loose forward.

Letham was joined on the bench by Nathan McCloy and Tyler Blackburn to cover the backs.

Horowhenua-Kapiti go into the game as favourites, having finished runner-up to Wanganui in last year’s top four Meads Cup, while Mid Canterbury made the finals for the next four and took home the Lochore Cup. Carter knew Horowhenua-Kapiti had a big forward pack.

“They are very solid and very skilled,” Carter said.

“They will look to dominate us up front without a doubt and disrupt our line-outs and scrums.”

He’d also heard they had a handy first-five this season, who was the brother of former All Black Rodney So’oialo, and pace out wide.

Carter said Mid Canterbury would need to go in with the right mindset and ensure they were connected on defence, as a win would set the tone for the season ahead.

“Especially a win away from home, they are hard to come by, so if we can secure that that’d be fantastic and definitely a driver going forward,” Carter said.

Week one was the time where everyone got a look at what each team had to offer this season, and Carter and his fellow coaches would be taking a good look around.

“Horowhenua-Kapiti have got to be right up there, and Wanganui, they are always professional and they always prepare and perform very well so they will definitely be a formidable force to be reckoned with,” Carter said.

But Mid Canterbury’s closest neighbours – South Canterbury and North Otago – were likely to be real contenders too. Carter said he had a lot of respect for their South Canterbury coach Barry Mathews.

“He certainly knows how to get the best out of his players,” Carter said.

North Otago are traditionally a strong side, with a formidable pack and some big, powerful runners in their backline. Both are in Mid Canterbury’s pool this season.

Carter said his players were excited to get their season under way and start making their way towards their initial goal of a top four finish at the end of pool play.

“Anyone can win on their day, it’s just a matter of who wants it more,” Carter said.

Mid Canterbury will play Horowhenua-Kapiti at Easton Park in Foxton today, with kickoff at 2.30pm.

Island time has served its purpose.

Now the pent-up Wallabies have hit the Auckland mainland and can throw everything at a second Bledisloe Cup Test in which they concede nobody gives them a chance.

Captain Michael Hooper said the team’s four days on Waiheke Island was among the most intense periods of his life spent focusing on a single game of rugby.

The All Blacks sense blood at their Eden Park fortress today and a 15th successful defence of the silverware.

But Hooper says his team won’t give ground as easily as they did in the second half of last week’s 38-13 meltdown in Sydney.

Not long after their ferry docked on Thursday, Hooper spoke of the value of stepping out of the rat race this week and breaking down, with detail, how the world champions can be toppled.

First came the recriminations over the loss – the 41 missed tackles, shambolic set piece work and conceding five tries in the second half.

Then came the game plan - how to end a barren 32-year drought at Eden Park and send this year’s series to a decider in Yokohama in late October.

“It has been on my mind all week,” Hooper said.

“Being a nice place, it’s just been rugby. It’s been good to actually push the other stuff away.

“I’ve really enjoyed the week, really enjoyed just being focused.”

The team couldn’t avoid the news filtering through that coach Michael Cheika’s job is coming under serious question for the first time in his tenure.

Hooper said there was no sign the passionate coach was feeling the pressure.

“The guy just wants to win.

That’s what he’s shown this week, an absolute thirst to get this team to reach its potential.

Cup contenders stacking up The result on the track was near perfect but the big win from Thursday night’s National Handicap for Natalie Rasmussen came when she walked into the All Stars stables on Friday morning.

It was there that the champion horsewoman found both Thefixer and Dream About Me bright and bubbly after their first up performances for the season in which they quinellad the first traditional New Zealand Trotting Cup lead up race.

“I was rapt with how they were this morning (Friday),” Rasmussen said.

“They’ve bounced back as good as you could have expected them to considering where they are at in their preparations.”

Thefixer was able to come from off the speed and run down Dream About Me who sat parked for the last stages of the races and while many might have found it a surprise that he could run down an Auckland Cup winner, Rasmussen said that in hindsight it wasn’t such a shock to her.

“Dream About Me is a quality mare, there’s no doubt about that – but I think Thefixer is a really good horse too.

“He probably hasn’t looked it because we’ve had to drive him pretty tough in his career, but he’s got a really strong turn of foot too which he showed last night.

“I just loved the way he let down and and really showed his will to win.”
