Ashburton has one chance to rebuild its town centre and it has one chance to get it right, says local real estate agent Ray Knight.

Right now, Knight says, the plans on the drawing board for the district’s new civic centre and library show that chance could go begging because the wrong site has been tipped as the preferred option.

He says he’s watched Ashburton grow,

change and develop over his 30 years plus as a valuer and commercial sales agent and with the shortlisted sites for the new development now out for public consultation, he believes there are some glaring errors in the information that has been presented.

A report prepared by Opus Architecture ranks four possible sites across a range of criteria and puts land where the Baring Square Methodist Church and the old county council building currently stand

as its first choice. Knight doesn’t agree.

He believes Opus have used an outof-date Boffa Miskell district plan that reflected a pre-earthquake Ashburton where the focus was around Baring Square as the centre of town with laneways linking it to the retail precinct.

Backpack remains unclaimed week later

A week after it was found, a lost backpack is still sitting at Ashburton Police Station.

Laura White, who lives in a rental property on a farm and cares for a number of horses, said the landowner found a backpack in the creek which runs across the property.

After going on a walk with her horses, White found the bag containing a couple of books, an exercise book, ID photos, some clothes and toiletries.

Police say the person who owns the bag would easily be able to identify the contents because the exercise book had their

writing in it.

She laid the contents out on some newspaper and made a post on the Facebook group, Ashburton Notice Board, before taking it to the police on, August 17.

However, no-one has claimed the bag or its contents from the police station.

White said the creek was an unusual place for the backpack to be, as the creek flow isn’t strong enough to have carried the bag so far downstream.

She said someone would also have had to cross through a number of other properties and jump a few fences to get to the spot on the creek where it was found.

Westpac rescue chopper busy

With one more week of August left, it’s shaping up to be a busy month for Canterbury Air Rescue Helicopter visits to Ashburton.

As of August 22 there had been 15 missions to the Mid Canterbury region.

Last year there were a total of 15 missions for the whole of August.

Wayne Ledgerwood, helicopter crewman for Garden City Helicopters, said so far there have been four hospital transfers, eight from Mt Hutt, one from Rakaia and two from Methven.

He said they can go a fortnight without coming to the area, but

sometimes they can visit Ashburton five times in a week.

A lot of the missions are to Mt Hutt for skiing or snowboarding accidents or hospital transfers from Ashburton to Christchurch.

Ledgerwood said often patients need to be transferred to Christchurch because they needed extra care not available in Ashburton.

Mt Hutt missions sometimes provided a challenge to the crews due to the weather, but they were in constant communication with ski patrol and can arrange to have a patient moved down to Methven if the weather is too bad.

He said the average time for missions varied on how long the crew was on the ground for, as

flight times were pretty standard.

Flying to Ashburton usually took 25 minutes, to Mt Hutt and Methven it was around 35 minutes and flying to Timaru took 45 minutes.

However, depending on how long the crew had to spend on the ground stabilising the patient so they were safe to transport, the total time varied.

He said the rescue chopper was funded through a number of groups, for situations like hospital transfers the district health board or Ministry of Health paid the bill.

For accidents on Mt Hutt, or sports injuries, ACC would pay and for search and rescue missions, police or a task force would pick up the tab.

Black-billed gulls seek safe nesting spots Critically endangered blackbilled gulls are scoping out the town for safe nesting spots.

The gulls have been sitting atop Harvey Norman’s store this week, socialising and eyeing up the nearby Ashburton River bed.

Forest and Bird’s Ashburton branch chairwoman Edith Smith said the gulls, whose numbers were declining, were returning to breed.

They traditionally nested on the Ashburton River near the State Highway 1 bridge, but weeds in the area might force them further up or down the river.

Some had also wintered over at the Ashburton Domain, she said.

They had also been seen on Lake Hood feeding on larvae.

Smith said the birds were feeding on smelt and small fish to

build protein prior to breeding.

Maintaining the braided river habitat was important for their survival.

She said some Ashburton people were beginning to catch on to the plight of the gulls, with one man offering to clear lupins from an area near the bridge so the birds could nest. They need clear areas, free from predators and human intrusion.

Last year about 3000 adults and their chicks nested on a shingle bar at the Rangitata River mouth because the Ashburton River bed was infested with weed.

They gulls are braided river specialists and nest in riverbeds between September and January before migrating to the coast.

The Ashburton River is one of the most significant rivers for braided river birds in Canterbury.

Business booming at St Vincent de Paul

It has been four months since the team at St Vincent de Paul moved into their new building and they all agree business is booming.

Store manager Donna Collins said she thinks the upswing could be because they are back in a familiar location.

“Not everyone knew where our temporary store was, so now we are back in the Triangle all of our regular customers are coming back,” she said.

Collins said another reason could be the one hour free parking which is now available outside the store.

“It’s more than enough time to come in and look for what you want,” she said.

Collins also talked about the outpouring of support from the Ashburton community after St Vinnie’s put out the call for blankets.

“We have just had donations flying in, it has been absolutely fabulous.”

St Vinnie’s moved in to their new single-storey building in April this year after operating out of the Ashburton Learning Centre since July last year due to their old two-storey building being demolished due to earthquake damage.

He’s urging the community to take the time to look at the consultation documents, to think about the information provided and to make their choices and thoughts known.

The only site that would see the civic complex play a role in the town centre revival was Eastfield, Knight said.

“I’m not paid by Eastfield, never worked for them, but this is the very clear best option. It has 10,000 square metres of unencumbered land and it is in the centre of the CBD.” The civic centre and library were critical elements of the town centre rebuild, he said.

“This is our last chance. Once we go down the rebuild track, if we don’t locate these facilities centrally the heart of Ashburton

will be in doubt.”

Knight challenged the way in which sites were ranked against a long list of criteria, and he questioned valuation data included in the consultation document, saying the value of the Methodist Church site had been stated at half the value of inner town land which is in the same zone.

“If we go over there with this project it will be extremely difficult to get the right mix into the town centre. I’ve never seen an opportunity like this for the community to redevelop the town centre. This will never come again; it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. If we go for the Baring Square site we’ve lost that opportunity.”

People had to make submissions, to question Opus and the opportunity to rebuild a vibrant town centre was not wasted, Knight said.

The four site options are the existing civic centre, the corner of Cameron and Cass streets, Eastfield and the Methodist church and county council building.

Submissions on the site options close on September 14.

Online classrooms way of the future?

Mid Canterbury primary and secondary school children will continue to get their education in classrooms, says local principals’ spokesperson Hilary Boyce, despite proposed new online schools.

Education Minister Hekia Parata this week said new Communities of Online Learning (COOLs) set up by accredited providers could see students learning online instead of attending school.

Boyce, principal at Wakanui School, said the idea was just a proposal and it would be business as usual for primary and secondary schools in the district.

“There are no concrete plans to put anything in place in the near future, it is just an idea. The

face-to-face model and going to school in regular hours and times suits the majority of families so there will be no appetite for change.”

Boyce said the online option might work for students that didn’t fit into mainstream education, but it was also fraught with difficulties. “Who will supervise the children while they are working online?”

But while classroom learning was the best working model now, online learning could catch up.

“I can see it working because it is really correspondence school, just opened up. We are heading in a direction where choice is a good thing and we all have different ways of learning. What is important is that we keep learning.”

She said tertiary education was already available online.

The proposal has dismayed the primary school teachers’ union who say education is about learning to work and play with other children.

The change is part of legislation that is the biggest update to education in New Zealand in nearly 30 years, says the Education Minister.

“COOLs will be open to as wide a range of potential providers as possible to gain the greatest benefits for young people,” Parata said.

“This innovative way of delivering education offers a digital option to engage students, grow their digital fluency, and connect them even more to 21st century opportunities.”

She said the accreditation process would be rigorous to ensure quality.

Make A Wish made dream happen

The Make A Wish Foundation has a special place in Hazel Redmond’s heart.

Recovering from the debilitating and life-threatening illness encephalitis in 2012, Hazel dreamed of meeting Kiwi fashion icon Karen Walker. The foundation made that happen and the young Ashburton businesswoman now counts Walker as a friend and mentor.

Redmond has courageously fought back to reclaim her life and now runs a photography and art business.

She related her story to Ashburton College Year 13 students this week while accepting their donation of $780 for the foundation. She said it would be well used, as the foundation changed the lives of young people suffering from life-threatening illnesses.

Redmond fell ill at a netball tournament in 2010, while a boarder at St Margaret’s College.

She was diagnosed with viral meningitis, which spread to the membranes of her brain and developed into encephalitis.

Doctors said it was a severe case, she might never play sport

Icehouse will tour Australia and New Zealand next year to celebrate 40 years of live shows.

The Australia rockers will jet off across the ditch in January for the first time in 20 years, before hitting stages across Australia throughout 2017, according to an official announcement. While her friends were sitting school exams, her mum Rachel contacted Make A Wish and in

2012 she met Walker.

Redmond toured her private workshop, shared stories and shopped in the designer’s Auckland store. Their friendship has endured.

“She inspires and guides me with my photography and art and has introduced me to some of the world’s best photogra-

phers. She pushes me every day to do the best I can do.”

Redmond said her business advice was hugely valuable and that her wish-come-true had drastically changed her life.

The foundation played a special role granting wishes and imparting hope, strength and joy.

BNZ closed-for-good day Ashburton BNZ staff will be providing budget advice to parents, cooking meals and sorting jewellery next week when the branch is closed on Wednesday for its annual volunteer day.

BNZ stores all over the country take part in Closed for Good, which involves 3200 staff going out into the community to do good.

An Australian father and son have been rescued off Mt Tongariro after taking a wrong turn. A statement from police said the 49-year-old man and his 13-yearold son set out Tuesday morning to visit Mt Doom in the Tongariro National Park. It was only when they were near the high point of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing that they were encouraged by other trampers to walk to the end at Ketetahi. However, they took a wrong turn and ended up in the Oturere Valley. They realised they were lost but thinking they could see a carpark they pushed on.

As soon as they got cellphone coverage they called police who were able to pinpoint their location using the man’s cellphone and a Rescue Helicopter was sent to the mountain. The pair were flown to Mangatepopo.

Cyclist dies A cyclist has died following an accident on State Highway 6 near Aratuna early yesterday morning.

The man was involved in a crash south of Mile Line Rd police said.

He is yet to be identified. The Serious Crash Unit was to attend and the road would be closed until the investigation was complete, police said.

Boatie now a recovery The search for a missing 18-yearold man whose boat flipped off the coast of Taranaki on Tuesday is now a recovery operation. A police spokeswoman said it was not expected he would be found alive but a limited search would continue.

Not letting diabetes get in the way of life

Two years ago Harry O’Connell was diagnosed with type one diabetes, but that’s not holding the five-year-old back.

After nearly two weeks of drinking lots of water and using the toilet frequently, Michelle O’Connell said they were given the initial diagnosis.

“It was pretty traumatic, [but] he’s had it for two years now and we’re just learning to live with it,” she said.

Only about 10 per cent of people with diabetes are believed to have type one, it results from an

auto-immune reaction where the cells that produce insulin are attacked.

Insulin is produced in the pancreas and is responsible for regulating glucose levels in the blood as well as storing glucose from carbohydrates.

Type one usually occurs in children between seven and 12, however, anyone can be diagnosed.

Harry was recently given an insulin pump and O’Connell said it’s far better than having to give him injections.

They also have a continuous glucose monitor that allows them to scan a device on his arm to find out his glucose levels.

O’Connell said they also make sure he eats a healthy diet of fruit, vegetables and meat and limit his sugar and carbohydrate intake.

However, things like birthday parties and going to play at

friends’ houses are still a challenge, and O’Connell has to go with Harry to make sure he’s alright.

But she said his teachers and aides at Longbeach School are amazing and all make sure they look after Harry and his needs.

“The teachers all had to learn about how to use his pump, but they also had to get to know Harry as a person and learn when he’s happy or sad,” she said.

Harry doesn’t let his diabetes hold him back and recently he went skiing on Mt Hutt.

“Harry just sees his diabetes as everyday life,” O’Connell said.

Women who run their own rural businesses are being encouraged to enter the Enterprising Rural Women Awards.

The awards offer an opportunity to showcase their innovative rural enterprises and gain recognition for their achievements.

Last year’s winner Latitude Magazine’s Joanne Taylor, of Mid Canterbury said rural women needed to just do it and enter.

Air NZ ‘appalled’ Air New Zealand’s chief executive Christopher Luxon says bad behaviour by crew posted to social media let down the entire company.

“Our obvious concern is that the behaviour displayed is a clear breach of our code of conduct and more importantly has let down 11,000 hard-working Air New Zealanders.”

He said the airline was treating the matter very seriously.

A spokeswoman said the investigation was continuing.

Two staff had been stood down in the meantime.

In the social media postings a pilot is seen with an inflatable doll and a flight attendant spits water.

The images were believed to have been shared to Facebook and Instagram after staff sent them on Snapchat.

An Air New Zealand spokeswoman yesterday said she was not aware of any complaints from passengers.

On Tuesday the spokeswoman said the company was

“shocked and appalled” by the images.

“We expect the highest standards of behaviour and respect from all our staff.

“These images were brought to our attention in the past 48 hours and an investigation commenced immediately. We believe the video was produced about four years ago and the photos were taken more than a year ago.

“One of the staff members concerned no longer works for Air New Zealand and the other two have been removed from duties pending the outcome of our investigation.

“It goes without saying that this is a situation we are treating with extreme seriousness – and our obvious concern is that the behaviour displayed is a clear breach of not just our code of conduct but basic decency.”

EPMU, the union that represents cabin crew, said it would “look after its members” and would not comment further on the matter.

Zumba party raises $300 for hockey girls

Over $300 was raised for the Under-15 Mid Canterbury Girls’ Hockey Team at a Zumba party on Monday night.

The team is fundraising to travel to the national U15 girls’ championships in Nelson between September 26 and October 1, the first week of the school holidays.

Nicola Armstrong, whose daughter is one of the players, said about 35 girls turned up to the Zumba event.

Armstrong said the girls really enjoyed themselves.

The Zumba party was held in the Netherby School Hall and run

by Zumba Ashburton, instructor Katie Esler said the girls really got into it.

Esler said Zumba was a good way to work out because the mixture of high intensity and low intensity moving exercised every muscle.

Armstrong said the hockey team is also holding a quiz night on Friday, starting at 7.30pm in the MSA. She said the doors will open at 7pm for door sales, tickets are $40 for a team of six.

Earthquake strikes Italy A strong earthquake struck central Italy Wednesday, levelling buildings in several towns as residents slept. One mayor reported a family of four trapped under the debris without signs of life and another said simply: “The town isn’t here anymore.”

The magnitude 6.1 quake struck at 3.36am and was felt across a broad swath of central Italy, including the capital Rome where residents felt a long swaying followed by aftershocks. First images of damage showed debris in the streets and some collapsed buildings in towns and villages that dot much of the Umbrian countryside.

The hardest-hit towns were reported as Amatrice and Accumoli near Rieti, with residents running into the streets as aftershocks continued into the early morning hours. As daylight dawned, residents and civil protection workers began digging out with shovels and bulldozers as dazed

The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre put the magnitude at 6.1.

The US Geological Survey put the magnitude at 6.2 with the epicentre at Norcia, about 170 kilometres northeast of Rome, and with a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometres.

The earlier earthquake struck L’Aquila in central Italy, about 90 kilometres south of the latest quake.

A 1997 quake killed a dozen people in the area and severely damaged one of the jewels of Umbria.

This giant pearl could be the biggest ever found after being handed in by a fisherman. The man, who has not been identified, found the priceless 34kg gem 10 years ago in sea off the coast of Palawan Island, Philippines. The pearl measures 30cm-wide and 67cm-long, dwarfing the current world’s biggest Pearl of Allah which weighed 6.4kg and is worth $US35m ($NZ86m). Tourism officer Aileen Cynthia Amurao said “The fisherman threw the anchor down and it got stuck on a rock during a storm, he noticed that it was lodged on a shell and swam down to pull up the anchor, and also brought the shell with him. This was a decade ago and he kept it at home. We’re waiting for authentication from Gemologist Institute and other international authorities”.

Football is double-hand transplantee’s new goal It's been just over a year since 9-year-old Zion Harvey received a double-hand transplant, and he said what he really wants to do now is play football.

"I feel happy about my new hands, and I don't feel different. I like now that I can throw a football further than when I didn't have hands," he said during a briefing at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he underwent the 10-hour surgery in July 2015. His mother, doctor and physical therapists joined him.

The nation's youngest hand transplant patient has been going through extensive rehab to learn how to use his new hands.

He lost them and his feet to amputation seven years ago after suffering a serious infection, and has leg prosthetics that allow him to walk.

Earlier this month, the suburban Baltimore boy showed off his new abilities by throwing out the first pitch at an Orioles game.

The changing face of banking

here’s a lot of concern circulating in New Zealand’s small town communities about a gradual loss of facilities and services.

The latest scare has come in the Westpac threat that it will be closing bank branches in around 19 centres or suburbs and for those affected communities that could mean some quite significant changes.

Banking like every other business has been watching its face-to-face business disappear as people switch banking habits from paper to online. And banks just like retailers, are in the business of doing business and staying in business.

If their bottom line is being eroded and their banks stand empty because customers are doing their business via computers, cellphones or tablets, then they have to change.

For smaller communities, the loss of perhaps their only bank is a serious inconvenience. It means changing banking habits or travelling to another suburb or town to do their business.

It’s unrealistic to expect banking services to remain unchanged, but unfortunately their withdrawal from any community is always seen as a down grading of that community.

While there are no indications Westpac has changes planned on our patch, changes in the financial landscape have already started in our district. Last year Kiwibank pulled out of Allenton and while the suburb’s ATM machine remained, it’s probably on borrowed time. In town, the two branch ANZ is now one, leaving a blank store front on Ashburton’s East Street.

For decades banks just got bigger, with their size reflecting their market share, but today’s it’s possible to be the biggest in the game and to operate from a backroom.

Over the years banks fought to set up shop on a town’s main street – a move that many believed was wrong, saying main streets should be the domain of retailers.

Those who opposed main street banking were right. As banks retrench any closure leaves behind an empty store front. We have one yawning gap now in Ashburton.

Qantas Airways’ profits soar

Newly appointed chief executive Marc England said the company was reorienting to improve its ability to “execute its strategies at speed”.

England has delivered a shakeup of the company’s senior management team.

“In the short term, we are determined to extract more value from our existing operations while we implement our plans to deliver new services for our customers and thrive in the evolving energy market,” he said.

Net profit after tax increased to $184.2 million, from $104.8 million the previous year, as its generation assets were revalued up by

$138 million, compared with no movement in their value the year earlier.

The board declared a final dividend of 8.2 cents per share for total distributions for the financial year of 16.4 cents, compared with total distributions of 16 cents last year. The dividends are only 80 per cent imputed versus 100 percent imputed in the previous year.

The final dividend will be paid October 14 with a record date of September 30. The company will forecast earnings at its October 19 annual meeting.

Earnings per share of 18.4 cents per share compares with 10.5 cents in the previous financial year.

Consistent with other players in the sector, capital expenditure plans for the year ahead are limited because of current over-supply of electricity capacity, with just $39.7 million of stay-in-business capex planned.

RBNZ sticks to rate track view The New Zealand dollar gave up some of its gains, dipping below US73c, after Reserve Bank governor Graeme Wheeler backed his interest rate path as erring on the side of caution.

The Kiwi slipped to US72.91c from US73.16c yesterday, still up from US72.68c before Wheeler’s speech. The trade-weighted index was little changed at 77.24 from 77.38, still above the RBNZ’s projection for the TWI to average 76 this quarter.

The local currency rose as high as US73.44c after the Reserve Bank reiterated expectations for

35 basis points of further cuts to the official cash rate, but pushed back against critics calling for either a pause or more aggressive action. The speech said a lower rate was needed to prevent weak low inflation expectations from bedding in, but to go faster would risk promoting instability in the financial system.

The Kiwi’s gains “looked to be an over-reaction given the speech specifically stated it was a reiteration of themes from the recent MPS (monetary policy statement),” Bank of New Zealand market strategist Kymberly Mar-

tin said in a note. “If the NZD/ USD was to successfully break through last night’s resistance it would take the currency to its highest level since May 2015.”

Local data today includes July merchandise trade data and mortgage lending figures.

The Kiwi was little changed at A95.68c from A95.71c yesterday and fell to 4.8396 Chinese yuan from Y4.8668. It traded at E64.48c from E64.57c and declined to UK55.26p from UK55.64p. The Kiwi decreased to 73.06y from 73.29y yesterday.

Genesis Energy, New Zealand’s largest electricity retailer, posted a 2.7 per cent decline in annual operating earnings as a combination of lower electricity, gas and oil prices combined with ongoing retail market competition to reduce revenues slightly more than operating costs.

Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, amortisation and movements in the value of financial instruments declined by $9.5 million to $335.3 million in the year to June 30, on total revenues of $2.01 billion, against $2.02 billion in the prior year, the Auckland-based company said in a statement. Total operating expenses fell to $1.68 billion from $1.75 billion.

Genesis annual earnings slip

In the past year Qantas has announced new investment in eight Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners for Qantas International and the first Dreamliner flight will be open for sale before Christmas. It is also in the final stages of considering options for extending wi-fi on regional and international flights and is talking to Cricket Australia about live-streaming cricket matches this summer on aircraft involved in the wi-fi trial.

The turnaround has helped Qantas’s cash position with $2.8 billion of operating cash flow, up 38 per cent, available for the share dividends, debt repayment, and further capital expenditure.

Australia’s biggest airline, Qantas Airways, will resume paying dividends after a seven-year hiatus following a A$1.03 billion full-year net profit after tax, up 80 per cent on the prior year and the best in its 95year history.

The airline has returned more than A$1 billion to shareholders in the past year through share buybacks and the board has declared it will pay more than A$500 million through a 7 cents per share dividend on October 12 and a further on-market share buyback of up to A$366 million, subject to shareholder approval.

Shareholders aren’t the only ones enjoying the bonanza - the company is also paying a one-off cash bonus of A$3,000 to almost 25,000 non-executive employees providing they’re covered by the 18-month pay freeze introduced under the transformation programme.

Prime lamb prices firm Prime lambs continued to meet strong competition at the Tinwald saleyards on Tuesday with prices firming slightly on last week’s sale.

The majority of the yarding were heavy lambs with the average price of $124.75. Prime ewes again lifted for the heavier types on a similar yarding to previous sales.

In the store section, a line of medium condition mixed age Romney ewes mated to a Romney ram sold from $82 to $103.

The first of the season’s ewes with black face lambs at foot realised $63.

Shorn lambs fetched $121128 (heavy), $111-119 (medium) and $96-106 (light). Woolly ewes made $125-133 (heavy), $92-110 medium and $76-89 (light).

More police to thwart firearm crime More resources for frontline policing and targeting criminal activities rather than adding onerous burdens on law-abiding rural firearms’ licence holders would do more to stem illegal arms racketeering, according to a Rural Women NZ spokesperson.

RWNZ’s national finance chair Rachael Dean delivered her message at the Law and Order Select Committee on the illegal possession of firearms last week.

The select committee is considering a number of proposals including the introduction of a database to monitor all new firearms, and microchipping new firearms.

The illegal possession of firearms is an issue of immense importance

to RWNZ members, many of whom are responsible licensed firearm owners and live in communities where firearms are an essential and everyday part of rural life, Dean said “The ability to own a firearm in rural New Zealand is vital for farming purposes and for a range of other popular sporting and recreational pursuits including hunting, shooting and collecting.”

The RWNZ position leans towards better police enforcement of existing licencing controls, along with increased frontline police would be more effective in dealing with the issues of illegal possession of firearms.

The group also addresses a seri-

ous shortage of police in rural areas and views it as as a primary cause of firearm thefts in rural communities.

“The focus should be on improving community safety and on the prevention of organised and firearm-related crime,” Dean said.

“New Zealand has a ratio of one constabulary police officer to every 515 people.

“Queensland which has a similar total population and rural-urban population split to New Zealand, has one to 423 people and would be a good ratio to aim for.”

In the case for microchipping RWNZ considers criminals would simply remove or damage the microchips.

Monsanto hones in on data Monsanto is widening its hold on computerised farming services, hoping to attract farmers looking for an edge in boosting crops and managing their land amid a slumping agricultural economy, the Wall Street Journal has reported. The mega biotech seed company plans to expand its Climate Corp. subsidiary, which delivers weather and planting advice based on computer models, to develop an online network similar to Amazon.com Inc. Monsanto aims to build an online bazaar allowing farmers to shop for services and share data with Monsanto and other companies.

Feds ponder 1080 ire Federated Farmers is puzzled as to why people are still complaining about the use of 1080, long after it’s been established as a key tool in New Zealand’s environmental protection system. The Commissioner for the Environment concluded five years ago that 1080 was the only viable tool for protection against pests on much of New Zealand’s conservation land. Federated Farmers says the eradication of bovine tuberculosis is imperative to the ongoing viability of New Zealand agriculture. The relatively low incidence of the disease in recent years is due to strategic use of pest control, especially 1080.

Skellerup profit slips Skellerup Holdings’ annual profit fell 6 per cent as weaker demand for products in its agricultural business weighed on improved earnings from its industrial unit. Profit slid to $20.5 million, or 10.65 cents per share, in the 12 months ended June 30, from $21.9m, or 11.38 cents, a year earlier, the Aucklandbased company said. That’s within its April forecast for profit of between $20m to $21m.

Milker banned from industry A former contract milker has been banned

from working in the dairy industry for 12 months for ramming a dairy cow with a quad bike, causing it severe pain and distress. Fifty-six-year-old Christopher Mark Bennett was working on a farm in Raglan when the abuse occurred in November, 2014. Bennett had been rounding up stock when he saw fit to ram a difficult cow that was in full milk, with his quad bike at least twice. Bennett was convicted and sentenced to 125 hours’ community work and disqualified from working in the dairy industry for 12 months.

Ballance writes off upgrade Ballance Agri-Nutrients has written off $13.3 million in scoping costs associated with a potential upgrade of the farm nutrient co-operative’s ammonia urea plant in Kapuni, Taranaki. Following an earlier write-down of $5.5 million for exploratory work, Ballance CEO Mark Wynne said that the decision to write-off the remaining $7.8 million followed the recent withdrawal of a potential cornerstone partner for a rebuild of the plant.

Waste water into fertiliser Fonterra has developed a new wastewater treatment technology that turns dairy waste into nutrient rich dairyderived fertiliser at the co-operative’s Edendale plant. According to Fonterra’s environmental manager Ian Goldschmidt, farmers report exceptional pasture results from utilising the new fertiliser, which also helps Fonterra deliver on its sustainability commitments.

New live export rules New rules on the export of animals and animal products take effect today and are set to give the Ministry of Primary Industries greater visibility on the welfare of animals being exported from the land of the long white cloud. The Age Concern Committee were hosts to their many volunteers at a lunch function on August 12. The event is held annually to say thank you, and to acknowledge the wonderful work these special people contribute to the services offered by the organisation to our local community.

Rosa Bennett’s 50 Plus is scheduled to start its second 6 week course for the year on Friday September 2. This is held at the Ashburton Senior Centre, 206 Cameron Street. All are welcome – morning tea, a topical speaker and fellowship on offer.

Due to a change of circumstances our Annual Lavender Day will now be held on March 17, 2017.

Hospital visiting for out of town patients is once again in place and any enquiries can be directed to the Age Concern office 3086817.

We are delighted to report that funding for the Steady as You Go programme has been approved from Head Office, thus enabling us to continue with this most worthwhile initiative.

In the absence of Mary Harrison 206 Club is in the very capable hands of Janet Olds and Norma Galway for 3 weeks. We welcome their valuable input and thank them for making themselves available The ladies exercise class with instructor Frank Connolly continues on a Thursday morning at 9.30am, at the Ashburton Seniors Centre, 206 Cameron Street.

The Mens and Ladies singles champions have been found for the 2016 season, with Ken Mackenzie and Chris Talbot taking out the titles! Runners up were Matt Markham and Rosemary Bennett.

Michael Lawson has taken out the Henselite Singles event over fellow club mate Simon Thomas, with a 11-10 win in the final! Michael now progresses onto the NZIB Henselite Singles final. We wish Michael all the best for the upcoming event!

Ashburton took on the touring North Island team recently, which is part of their build up to the annual North vs South Island Test. Ashburton made a great start winning the first round of their encounter 5.5 games to 2.5. But by the third round the North showed their class and came out winning 15-9 overall.

Local players Simon Thomas, Michael Lawson, Matt Markham and Grant Wilson represented the South Island in the North vs South Test, which saw Simon, Michael and Grant who were part of the Men’s Fours team, winning against their counterparts 3-0 to claim a medal! Matt who was part of the Mens Triples team came close, but lost 1-2 in his match up.

The North won the test overall 15.5 games to 8.5.

Interclub finals have been played out, with Willowby 1 coming out victorious over Wakanui in the division one final 6-1!

In division two Baring Square came out on top against MSA 2 winning 4-3. Full results can be found on the associations website!

Allenton Bowling Club Good morning - results from Saturday Aussie Pairs August 13, 1st: Brent Mayson & Gordon Sparks, 2nd: Murray Smallridge & Richard Kane, 3rd: Mike Quinn & Shirley Doig. Everyone arrived well rugged up due to extreme cold but then the big heater in the sky kicked in and “stripping” off a few layers was required!!!! Noeline & Bruce modelled the yellow hats this week and came up against the Holdoms again and the battle began with entertainment plus, the White Team are 1 up but will have to hold their breath until the next meeting. August 20, 1st: Murray Smallridge & Richard Kane (they looked very splendid in the Yellow Hats), 2nd: Gavin Eder & Brian Williams, 3rd: Bruce White & Noeline Woods.

It seems a great fellowship is had by all on these days and so great to hear the banter. The last day will be Saturday September 3. Opening Day is September 10 and we look forward to seeing you all for the new season, so start practicing.

Ashburton Garden Club Pat Tarbotton welcomed Sharon Breakwell from Wastebusters. She gave us an insight into how the Company operates, concentrating on soft plastics and foam packing. With the introduction of collection bins at the local supermarkets, it is another disposable venue for soft plastics which otherwise clog up the rubbish dumps as does the foam packing which seems to be the choice of manufacturers.

Even that has been processed with a machine that reduces it to an exportable product along with all soft plastics sourced here in Ashburton.

Not only the physical activities that she endured, (Abseiling from the top of a dam, building a raft, carrying a power pole, and hiking for three days), but overcoming fear and making life-long friends.

Emily said she came home with more confidence and aspirations, and said it was thoroughly worthwhile and would recommend this course to anyone wanting to increase their selfconfidence.

The Berwick facility was built by the Taieri Lions Club 25 years ago and

has had more than 1000 participants go through the course which is open to anyone between the ages of 18 to 65 years and it is to assist people to aspire to greater heights.

Emily was thanked by Lion Clarrie Galway and presented with a Certificate of Appreciation.

The tailtwister then extracted fines from various members for any misdemeanours they may have incurred.

Drawing of the raffles and singing of the National Anthem bought the meeting to a close.

Ashburton U3A Club News Our speaker was Englishman Anthony Green who titled his presentation Finding a Common Space, Muslims, Islam and some questions in a time of chaos. He was introduced by Jill Ross.

Christchurch based after many years of teaching in various countries, Tony Green works as a freelance writer and editor.

Speaking for and on behalf of the Muslim community is a very daunting thing and with every explosion he would say to himself, “please do not let it be a Muslim”. Recalling the recent atrocity in France when a man drove a lorry through a crowd killing dozens and injuring even more, Tony said all the headlines screamed Muslim but in fact the man did not practice Islam, did not go to the Mosque, did not attend prayers or live the Islamic faith. The result was more hatred against Muslims.

Islam is the faith and Muslims are the people. There are three teachings: Qur’an, Sunnah and Hadith, eight prophets of whom Jesus (Isa) is one and the expectation that every person have personal responsibility/care for justice, neighbours, waste, wealth and reflection, prayer, to journey to the Haj once in a lifetime, if are able to. The extreme violence we hear about is not part of the teachings of Islam. As Shakespeare said in The Merchant of Venice “The Devil can cite Scripture for his own purpose”. Edward Thomas wrote ‘what if I in me and I in them could nourish what has great value and no price’.

Coronation Target Shooting Club Congratulations to Steve McArthur (open) Sandy Bennett (open) and Lanelle McArthur (junior captain) on their selection for the respective New Zealand teams.

Other Coronation members to compete in the North Island/South Island matches at the weekend were Mark Stewart (open) Nina McKenzie (women) Hailey Beevor (women) Savanna McArthur (junior) and Megan Snowden (junior) all of whom performed well.

Club scores this week were exceptional Murray Cook 99.4 top of the pops, Michaela Smith 98.7 Emma Smith 98.4 Dean Smith 97.4 and Morgan Smith 97.2 made it look like a family take over. Keith Bonnington a P.B. 95.2, Paul Trumper 94.3 and another newcomer Colin Taylor 91.2.

Lanelle rounded off a good weekend by completing a double card 197.11 for a secondary schools competition. Emma Smith 191 and Morgan smith 189 in the same competition looks good for the team. End of season is fast approaching and the very popular Maw Trophy drawn pairs next week and not forgetting the N.D.C. Division one final between our own “Plainsmen” against Manawatu the reigning champions.

Seniornet Ashburton Inc. August has been a busy month again for Seniornet, with classes for Movie maker and spreadsheets. We thank Roger Scammell & Robin Burton for their time and patience in taking these classes.

Tablet/ipad/phone evenings and afternoon forums have been very informative.

The Plains Ladies Probus Club There was a good attendance for our Birthday meeting with Wilma welcoming members. Apologies, correspondence and Treasurers report was read. The Probus change of name was discussed.

Chertsey-Pendarves Fifteen members attended our annual combined meeting with our Fairton WI friends held at Rosebank community room on 4th August at 1.30pm.

Jane Wright from Hospice Mid Canterbury was our speaker telling us of the help which is available to enhance the quality of life for all those in Mid Canterbury district dealing with life limiting illness and bereavement.

She was thanked by Joyce Giller of Fairton and presented with a fruit tray.

The Motto for the day was: “If you know a good thing, pass it on” and the Roll Call was a donation to Hospice.

Una and Ann celebrated their birthdays.

Afternoon tea and fellowship with Fairton concluded the meeting.

Fairton Fairton celebrated its 85th birthday by travelling to Methven and enjoying a lovely lunch, each other’s company and lots of laughs.

Motto: “The young sow wild oats, the old sow sage.”

The Roll Call was “wear your favourite brooch” with the result that some lovely very old, and very new brooches were displayed.

The August meeting saw Fairton members combining with Chertsey/Pendarves.

Hinds Hinds Institute celebrated their 86th birthday with an outing for lunch at the Stables, with seventeen members attending.

Before lunch was served, a short meeting was held.

Congratulations were extended to Rona McConnell who had received an award for her years of service to the Blind.

From catering proceeds, it was decided to donate to Hinds WI special project, the St. John shuttle.

The Roll Call for the day was soap and tissues for Ward Six and Tuarangi Rest Home.

Pauline Palmer then gave a report on the Wellington Conference she attended on our behalf.

Following a lovely lunch, eleven members then went to Ashburton District Family History Group room at the Ashburton Museum.

Lynn and Marilyn gave us an interesting talk on the history of the group. Started in 1981 with just a few members, by 2005 it had become known as the Ashburton District Family History Group.

It has had four homes in its time but the recent move 18 months ago, has seen it established in the Ashburton Museum.

The group has 100 current members and

is always looking for more people to join.

The membership fee is $30 per person or $40 for two people in the same household. Membership entitles you to attend monthly meetings and research at the library during opening hours and lots of other benefits.

The group holds a large collection of books both for reference and borrowing by members with a strong local content, plus New Zealand wide and overseas.

They have a microfiche section with 11,000 fiche covering early Electoral Rolls, Civil Registration Indexes for New Zealand up to 1990. They also hold Civil Registration information for various Australian States, the 1991 UK Census and IGI for the United Kingdom.

Lynn and Marilyn were thanked and given a donation from our group to help in further research.

Netherby Twenty-one members met at the Seniors Centre for this meeting. Arrangements were made for five cars and runners to deliver Meals on Wheels on Wednesday and flowers for the hospital at the end of the month.

Two members received hand-made cards for big “O” birthdays with two others being serenaded with happy birthday.

Adrienne won the raffle this month. Competitions resulted in Joan Campbell winning the Northchurch Trophy with Cora Petrie receiving the Moylan Trophy.

Our speaker was a member Diane Bradley who gave us a brief outline on the St Vincent de Paul organisation.

Six members then modelled clothes from “St Vinnie’s” with some being sold for the organisation.

A collection of non-perishables was also given to them for the foodbank. Coins for Friendship were gathered up while we finished the afternoon with a cup of tea.

Wakanui Our July meeting was held at the Sinclair Centre on a lovely sunny afternoon. Our Motto: “There are three ages of women – young, middle-aged and wonderful!”

The Roll Call was “My favourite meat” – we all seem to enjoy a good variety, favourites being chicken, beef, venison and buffalo.

Our president thanked members for the lovely array of baking for the Cancer Society.

Paddy Kennedy from Allenton Meats was our guest speaker. Paddy gave a wonderful demonstration on cutting a leg of lamb into different cuts. Cuts included schnitzel, kebabs, stir-fry and roasts.

Members all enjoyed a very informative afternoon.

Liverpool, Everton, Chelsea advance in League Cup Watford and West Bromwich Albion were beaten by third-tier opposition in the English League Cup yesterday, while fellow Premier League sides Liverpool and Everton enjoyed big wins in the second round.

Chelsea was pushed hard by third-tier Bristol Rovers before also advancing to the third round with a 3-2 win at Stamford Bridge.

Watford lost 2-1 to Gillingham after extra time and West Brom was beaten 4-3 on penalties by Northampton after they finished 2-2 after 120 minutes.

Northampton famously ousted Liverpool in the 2010-11 competition, but the Reds easily avoided a so-called “giant-kill-

ing” this time round by thrashing Burton Albion 5-0. Daniel Sturridge came off the bench to score two goals and wrap up victory over the second-tier side managed by former Liverpool forward Nigel Clough.

Coach open on Terry England soccer return England manager Sam Allardyce has said he might consider holding talks with defender John Terry on a possible return to international football, but adds he is not aware of the political issues that could arise as a consequence.

Terry won the last of his 78 England caps in 2012, before quitting the national team after the Football Association (FA) pursued a case against him following accusations of racially

abusing Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand.

The Chelsea defender was subsequently banned for four matches by the FA, despite being cleared of the allegation in a London court.

Allardyce did not rule out a return for the former England captain.

“Maybe so. I think it depends on what John said. Maybe if I get the opportunity, I might have to give him a ring,” he told

British media. “But until I come to that selection or that process, we’ll wait and see.

“I don’t know what the political side of that might mean, if there is a political side. I’ll have to have that conversation if I feel that John Terry may be a possibility.”

Allardyce said John Stones would benefit from working under manager Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and the defender had a great opportu-

nity to cement his place in England’s defence.

“Potential is something that’s going to be great in the future.

I want it right now and he’s (Stones) got a great chance of becoming it right now with working with Manchester City,” he added.

Pulver backs Cheika, Wallabies

Is Cooper worth booing?

By MichAel BroWn Most New Zealand rugby fans probably thought they had seen the last of Quade Cooper, given he had moved to France, but the playmaker is in line to start for Australia against the All Blacks on Saturday after qutting Toulon 12 months into his two-year contract.

It begs the question: will he still be booed? Do we still care about a player whose skill and influence has waned or is it just the default mechanism? Former Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie even said in 2013 most Kiwis don’t even know why they were booing Cooper.

The 28-year-old was public enemy No 1 in the eyes of New Zealand fans, particularly in 2010 and 2011 when even the King of Calm, Richie McCaw, was riled by the antics of the mercurial first five-eighths.

Cooper, for whatever reason,

went after McCaw. Perhaps he thought he could rattle the All Blacks captain. In Hong Kong in 2010, Cooper charged into the side of a ruck and smashed McCaw out the back. The All Black skipper retaliated by kicking his studs into Cooper’s knee. When the Wallabies scored the winning try on fulltime, Cooper fired in and again hit a prostrate McCaw late and hard on the head.

The following year in Brisbane, it was apparent that Cooper was still harbouring resentment towards the skipper, with the firstfive chasing McCaw around Suncorp.

After 54 minutes of swinging his handbag, Cooper finally struck gold when he was getting up from a ruck and drove his knee straight into McCaw’s face.

It looked deliberate and nasty, and he was cited but found not guilty.

It meant Cooper was reviled by many on these shores during the

2011 World Cup. He was booed every time his face went up on the big screen and heckled when he touched the ball.

McCaw and All Blacks coach Steve Hansen even asked fans to move on from their hatred of Cooper but it wasn’t that easy.

After all, as McCaw wrote in his book published last year: “The intent of what he was trying to do [when he kneed McCaw in the face] pissed me off more than the execution. Shortly after that happened, I was carrying and should have passed, but I lit up and I saw Quade standing in front of me and clattered into him instead.

“I was disappointed in myself doing that,” he added, “letting it get personal. There’s no need – players like Quade get sorted.

Sooner or later they get their beans.”

Perhaps it was karma, but Cooper suffered a serious knee injury early in the third and

fourth place playoff against Wales in the 2011 World Cup at Eden Park. As he was helped from the field in obvious pain, it was about the only time the booing stopped.

Cooper has been less relevant to New Zealand fans since then because he’s never really been the same player.

He’s still a polarising figure and some may boo him because that’s what people have always done.

“He’s brought it on himself but probably it would be good if we all got over it,” Hansen said in 2013.

Cooper will be ready for any manner of reception. A trawl through his Twitter account reveals a philosophical side.

“Good days give you happiness & bad days give you experience,” he said, borrowing a line used by basketballer Michael Jordan. “Both are essential.”

The Wallabies’ losing streak against All Blacks The news doesn’t get any better for the Wallabies. Backing up from Saturday’s thrashing at the hands of the All Blacks they now have to break an 18-test losing streak.

August 11, 2001. That was the last time the Wallabies beat the All Blacks on New Zealand soil.

The score was 23-15. It was played at a ground that doesn’t exist anymore. Richie McCaw would make his All Blacks debut three months later. Rieko Ioane who joined the All Blacks squad this week was only four at the time.

The All Blacks backline included Lomu, Wilson, Umaga and

Howlett that day at Carisbrook but they went down to John Eales’ men thanks to 18 points from Matt Burke. Since then it’s been a tough trip across the Tasman for the Wallabies, having lost 18 straight tests to the All Blacks in New Zealand.

And most of the time it hasn’t even been close. The average margin of defeat is 15 points – not helped by their last two matches in New Zealand – 51-20 and 41-13 to the All Blacks.

Twelve of the 18 defeats have been by 10 or more points.

The closest the Wallabies have come to victory is a four-point defeat at Eden Park in 2003,

when they handed over the Bledisloe Cup and haven’t seen it since. Eleven of those losses were at Eden Park.

Saturday will be just the Wallabies’ third test against the All Blacks at Westpac Stadium since the last second victory in 2000, courtesy of John Eales’ right boot.

The Wallabies have tasted success in New Zealand, just not against the All Blacks. They beat Italy, Russia, USA and the Springboks at the 2011 World Cup before losing to the All Blacks in the semi-final at Eden Park.

To be fair not many teams have won on New Zealand soil

since that victory at Carisbrook in 2001 – three to be exact.

The All Blacks have played 87 home tests and lost just four tests over that time (England 2003, South Africa 2008 and 2009 and France 2009).

That South African defeat in Hamilton is New Zealand’s last at home – a winning streak that currently sits at 41 tests.

The Wallabies will probably be glad the test this week isn’t at Eden Park where they haven’t beaten the All Blacks since 1986.

But we can remind them of that ahead of the third Bledisloe Cup test in October.

Australian Rugby Union boss Bill Pulver says Wallabies coach Michael Cheika’s position isn’t under pressure despite five straight losses culminating in last Saturday’s 42-8 thrashing by the All Blacks.

Pulver yesterday tipped a much-improved showing in Saturday’s return clash with New Zealand in Wellington and reiterated Cheika would coach the team through to the 2019 World Cup. “Our national coach is hurting and really the entire team is hurting,” said Pulver.

“That’s why I’m really confident you’re going to see a team that does play with a lot of pride on the line this weekend and I think you’ll see a far superior performance.”

Pulver dismissed any suggestion Cheika’s job could come under scrutiny after starting the season with a 3-0 home series loss to England and last weekend’s embarraassing defeat.

“No of course not, Michael Cheika is our coach right through the World Cup and he’s a world class coach,” Pulver said.

“At the elite level of rugby things ebb and flow and that’s what we’re seeing here. Our boys will fight back.”

Pulver also vigorously defended the ARU’s change in selection criteria last year which allowed overseas-based players with seven years continuous service in Australia and 60 Test caps to be selected for the Wallabies.

He brushed off criticism that bringing back veterans retarded the development of younger players and could cause division in the national squad.

“I think it is a very good policy and I have complete sympathy for Michael Cheika’s approach,” Pulver said.

“When you’ve got young developing players like a Reece Hodge in the centres coming through as part of the Wallaby programme, for him to train and be mentored by the likes of Matt Giteau is priceless.

“You are trying to get the balance right between a strong enough team to win the game and having a development pathway that brings elite talent through, so I think the policy change was very well-placed and I think Michael Cheika is applying it very well.”

On the day the Olympic gold medal-winning Australian women’s team returned home, Pulver noted Australia had stolen a march on the rest of the world by centralising their sevens programme back in 2013 and made it clear the ARU wasn’t about to rest on its laurels.

“I would go down and watch training and our women would defend against our men and it was the most incredible training experience I’ve ever seen ... no wonder they took it to another level,” Pulver said.

“There’s lots more we can do but we’ve made a really good start.”

Call to amputate leg pays off It’s a tough call for anyone to make, let alone a 12-year-old boy.

Byron Raubenheimer wasn’t quite a teenager when he chose to have his right leg amputated below the knee.

He’d been born with the condition paraxial fibula hemimelia, which meant he had no fibula (or calf bone) and only three toes on his foot - and he came to the conclusion that he would be better off without his lower limb.

“It was no small decision for a 12-year-old, but it remains the best decision I ever made,” says Byron, who underwent the surgery in 2003. “After my leg was removed I began mountain biking, rock climbing and I had a stint competing for New Zealand in

snowboarding.” Then he discovered cycling. Now, just two and a half years after getting his first road bike, Byron (25) is a member of New Zealand’s Paracycling team and will be going for gold in the men’s C4 1km event at the Rio 2016 Paralympics next month.

The Aucklander never expected to be chosen for the Rio team instead he was looking ahead to Tokyo in 2020. But he landed his spot after placing in the top 10 in the 2016 UCI Paracycling Track World Championships in Italy earlier this year.

He only made it to Italy thanks to winning an AMP Scholarship last year in association with True North Investments.

“For me, winning an AMP

Scholarship was a complete game-changer and a very important moment in my career,” says Byron. “It allowed me to focus on training for the world champs and it got me there. Had I not gone to that event, I definitely wouldn’t have qualified for Rio.” While he’s had some fantastic support, some have questioned whether his goals of getting to the Paralympics and then making the podium were realistic.

“I understand they were only trying to protect me in the long run.

However, I’m going to work as hard as I can to prove them wrong and show them I was always capable of achieving my goals.”

Track elbows its way back into field of vision

By Dylan Cleaver There was a moment in the Olympic 1500m final that symbolised not just Nick Willis’ race, but also athletics’ position in our sporting landscape.

On the second lap, after the super-slow pace dictated that his pre-race plan to stay wide was flawed, Willis fought for position on the inside lane.

American Ben Blankenship didn’t want him there and almost pushed him off the track.

Willis stayed strong, got the position, raced home for third. He didn’t just force his way back into position, but he built upon the work of Adams, Walsh and McCartney and forced track and field back into the national conscious.

Long may it remain.

Many will see sailing as the big winners of Rio de Janeiro. They were excellent, as they should have been. They won gold in the 49ers, which had the backing of the Team New Zealand machinery, one of the silvers went to a gold medal-winning 470 crew from London, while it was a welcome entrance to the medal circle for Alex Maloney and Molly Meech (49er-FX) and Sam Meech (Laser).

The bulk of sailing’s $18.4 million investment went into the hands of a few, and they delivered. Really, the only question was why there weren’t crews representing all the classes, especially given the proud history in boardsailing?

They might have been missing gold, but athletics was the real winner – and it was an altogether much bigger surprise.

The silver for mighty Val Adams was laced with drama of the right kind after all the drama of the wrong kind in London. Tomas Walsh made good the gains he’s demonstrated over the past few years. Eliza

McCartney smiled, giggled and vaulted her way into our hearts and Willis, at 33 the old stager, muscled track back into vogue after field threatened to steal all the glory. Yeah, they’re missing a gold, but we’ll take this haul any day of the week over Adams’ gold and nothing else at London four years ago.

Track and field is a global sport. According to IAAF president and former Olympic superstar Lord Coe, it is the second most popular sport in the world. You can find all sorts of metrics to back up all kinds of arguments, but in terms of true global reach, he’s probably right.

Being a force in track and field is something to aspire to. Statsdriven website fivethirtyeight. com adjusted the medal counts from London based on sports people actually care about – New Zealand dropped from 13 to, um, five.

Don’t panic. It doesn’t actually mean anything. Just like the silly per capita table we love to pull out here to make us feel puffed up, it is essentially meaningless. What it did show, though, was that track and field enjoyed

2,300,000,000 global television viewer hours in London, close to 800 million hours more than the next most popular Olympic sport, swimming, and 12 times more than rowing.

Again, this does not mean we should stop caring about rowing. Just as football’s global dominance should have no bearing on our love for rugby, neither should we feel guilty about our proficiency at propelling skiffs through flat water.

If, however, demonstrating our sporting prowess on a global stage is important to High Performance Sport NZ, and we’re told it is, then this upturn in athletic fortunes is a massive boon that should be capitalised on.

BUT ... that is not the main reason why track and field should vault their way from Tier 2 status to Tier 1, as of yesterday.

Athletics is about the most universal sport of all. You can do it and be good at it if you’re short and squat or tall and thin.

You can do it whether you were brought up in hot climes or cool; whether you’re from a developing economy or developed.

Rich or poor.

The medallists in the men’s javelin came from Germany, Kenya and Trinidad & Tobago.

Those three countries have about as much in common with each other as corn chips, kale and sausage.

Athletics New Zealand should be already planning a roadshow.

They can take the carnival to Fendalton and Manurewa and it would resonate the same: you don’t need much more than a pair of shorts and a tee-shirt, but come along to your nearest athletics club and we’ll find a sport that suits you ... guarantee it.

They’ll need funding to pull it off properly. The sort of funding that won’t produce medallists in Tokyo in four years’ time, but could for LA 2024, or whatever city the IOC decides to lay waste to next.

More importantly, though, it’s the sort of funding that gets kids off couches, gets them off tablets and gaming consoles, and gets them on to our fields.

All kids.

Not just the ones whose parents can afford it.

Russian paralympic team banned Two days after Russia finished fourth in the Olympic medal table, its Paralympic team was barred from the next big games in Rio de Janeiro as punishment for a state-backed doping programme.

Sport’s highest court yesterday upheld a decision by the International Paralympic Committee to exclude the sports superpower.

It was a step the IOC declined to take when it had the chance last month.

The 267 entries which Russian Paralympic athletes earned in 18 sports for the September 7-18 games in Rio will now be allocated to other nations not judged responsible for orchestrated cheating.

Russia won 36 gold medals at the 2012 Paralympics, second most in London, and was a runaway table-topping leader at its home 2014 Winter Paralympics.

Still, the Sochi Winter Games and Winter Paralympics are now notorious for results corrupted by state-funded agencies plotting to swap tainted doping samples from Russian athletes for clean ones at official testing laboratories.

In the fallout from those recent revelations – by the Russian lab director who has fled to the United States, and a World Anti-Doping Agency inquiry set up to investigate his claims – the Court of Arbitration for Sport announced its urgent verdict yesterday.

CAS dismissed the Russian Paralympic Committee’s appeal against exclusion from competing in Rio after a hearing was held in Brazil on Monday.

The court said its judges agreed the world Paralympic body “did not violate any procedural rule” in banning the Russian team two weeks ago.

Seven Jennian Homes Ashburton Swim Team members will be in action at the South Island Swimming Championships from to-

morrow. The local contingent will be among 170 competitors from around the South Island attending the qualifying meet that will run until Sunday, with two sessions each day.

The Ashburton team will leave today and stop off in Dunedin for a training session en route to Southland.

Prelims and finals will take place on Sunday.

Breakers add three rising stars to squad

Warriors chase Gillett

The New Zealand Breakers have picked up three development players for the upcoming NBL season.

Canterbury guard Ethan Rusbatch, Southland guard Derone Raukawa and North Harbour forward Samuel Waardenburg will all join the Auckland-based club after impressing coach Paul Henare.

Rusbatch and Raukawa, 23 and 21 respectively, have produced strong campaigns for their NZ NBL sides and were selected for the Tall Blacks’ recent Olympic qualifiers.

The 17-year-old Waardenburg is a Rangitoto College student and will be limited in his NBL availability to preserve his amateur status.

Seven current Breakers have graduated through the development pathway, including all three of the club’s 2015 development players.

The signings bring the Breakers’ full-time roster to 10, with just one import spot left to fill.

“All three guys bring their own style and flair to the team but they have some tough work ahead,” Henare said.

“Last year’s D-Unit are now rostered players and they’ve set a new standard in terms of what it means to be part of the D-Unit.”

Rusbatch said he couldn’t wait for the upcoming NBL season.

“Having so many talented and established players in my position is going to be great for me, to learn from them and to compete with them,” Rusbatch said.

“I’m looking forward to all the challenges ahead.”

The trio will join the side for preseason training from September.

The Warriors are reportedly chasing Kangaroos, Queensland and Broncos back-rower Matt Gillett, who is seriously considering making the move across the Tasman for next season.

The 27-year-old is off contract at the end of the year and has previously been linked to the Sea Eagles, Sharks and Titans. The Broncos are also expected to table an improved offer to keep him in Brisbane, although they are hamstrung by salary cap constraints.

The Warriors are believed to have some room in the salary cap, with Fox Sports estimating this to be as much as $600,000 for next year’s squad. They have also been in talks with playmaker Kieran Foran should the troubled player return to playing.

“I might be making the transition across the ditch,” Gillett told Fox Sports News.

Asked whether that move was likely or unlikely, Gillett responded: “In between.

Swimming Australia says it’s waiting for a response from the Australian Olympic Committee over reported criticism of the swim team at the Rio Games.

SA CEO Mark Anderson says he expects to meet AOC officials to discuss the issue. A report at the weekend claimed the swim team had set themselves apart from the rest of the Australian team in Rio. Anderson said he’d immediately written to the AOC for an explanation as to why no one had raised any issues with swim team officials before the claims appeared in media.

Laundering suspected Brazilian police say they’ve uncovered emails between International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Patrick Hickey and the head of the THG Sports hospitality company that discussed the illegal sale of Olympic tickets.

Police told a news conference in Rio de Janeiro that they were also investigating bank documents amid suspicion of money laundering tied to the illegal ticketing ring. Three members of the Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI) whose passports were seized by police on Sunday are suspected of involvement in the illegal sales, police said.

Roberts fined, to play Broncos star James Roberts has been fined $20,000 but escaped suspension over a drunken incident. Roberts has also been ordered to undergo a wellbeing plan which includes community service on his days off. Sport ‘We’re the one to beat’ They haven’t won a game in a month but Cronulla are still the team to beat for the NRL premiership this year, according to star Andrew Fifita.

Thrust into title favouritism on the back of a record 15-game winning streak, serious questions are being asked of the Sharks after losing three in a row to fall out of the minor premiership race. The Ashburton Boxing Club Tournament currently boasts a 14-fight card for Saturday evening’s event at Celtic Rugby Club.

National super-heavyweight champion Sam Watt will headline the bill as he takes on Wellington’s Thomas Russell in the elite 91kg category over three three-minute rounds.

Watt was crowned New Zealand superheavyweight champion at the National Boxing Championships in Rotorua last month.

The 24-year-old fought previously undefeated Queenslander Faiaga Opelu and was awarded a split decision victory by the

judges. Watt said he is expecting a challenging night against Russell, who has shared the ring with some of New Zealand’s best in Commonwealth Games gold and silver medallists David Nyika and David Light, as well as former national champion Cory Enoka.

“He’s (Thomas Russell) been in the ring with some top guys that have won New Zealand titles,” Watt said.

“He’s never got the result against them but he’s been there or thereabouts, so I certainly won’t be taking him lightly.”

The Celtic flanker, who first fought at the Ashburton Tournament in 2011, will be well

supported on home turf by his senior teammates, and is hoping to put on a good show.

“Being at Celtic is pretty special, playing footie and boxing here – so thanks to Damian (Perriton), Royden (Leath) and John (Leath) for getting me a fight here,” Watt said.

Fellow local boxers Connor Perriton and Mel McGlynn will also be in action on a night that all are welcome to attend.

“There’s door sales here for everyone that wants to come,” Ashburton Boxing Club president Damian Perriton said.

“There will be fighters in the ring at 7pm on the dot, it will be a good night.”
