Fire destroys family home

A newlywed couple have been left with next to nothing after their house burnt down on Monday evening.

Firefighters were first called to the Chertsey property at around 5.28pm.

A total of seven crews attended the fire.

Jamie and Michael Ross had only recently purchased the property and had only recently married.

Fire risk management officer Bevan Findlay said it was believed the fire had come from a scented candle.

“The homeowner has come home from a trip away and lit a scented candle and taken the dog out for a run for 20 minutes and come back to find the house on fire,” Findlay said.

“The homeowner has done the right thing straight away by calling 111, but he has then gone inside to attempt to find their wedding dress and rescue the cat, which is a big no-no.

“By the time he had gotten back out of the house the whole place was fully ablaze, so the big two lessons from this are – do not leave candles unattended and do not ever go back inside a building that is on fire.”

A family friend the Guardian spoke to on Tuesday said the family had been blown away by the support they received.

“Even on the night when it happened someone just came up to them and said here is $50,

A Givealittle page has been set up in support of the family, and 30 donations have already been made on the page.

“Tonight Jamie, Michael and their beautiful wee family have lost their dream family home, which they had only purchased a few months back, due to a house fire,” the page said.

Community rest-home developers face rising costs

Methven Care Trust members are seeking feedback on how to stage their proposed rest-home development in the face of rising building and consenting costs.

They have so far raised $1.05 million towards the previously reported $5 to $6 million price tag.

Members are aiming for an

opening date of 2029, as the town’s current rest-home, Methven House, nears the end of its useful life.

Chairwoman Joanna Suyker said in a press release on the trust’s website that one of the biggest issues for the project was the reality of rising building and consenting costs.

“Methven Care Trust is tackling

this by undertaking feasibility studies at the moment to revisit options, including how costs can be reduced,” Suyker said.

“We are very aware that, as we fundraise, the projected cost of the project may rise, so we need to be adaptive.

'We are open to feedback and welcome suggestions from the community as to how we can

stage the development.”

Methven Care Trust will build the new community facility on gifted land in the town’s Camrose Estate.

Stage One plans have to date revolved around designing and building a 20-bed facility with premium and standard bedrooms, all with ensuite bathrooms.

Plans also include smaller private lounges, a room for visiting healthcare and service professionals and a large open-plan dining area which can be connected to the main lounge to host community functions.

Future stages can be added as funds allow, including seniors’ rental flats, a dementia wing and self-contained retirement villas.

Call for all to attend Anzac services

Ashburton’s Alex Thomson wears his war medals proudly each Anzac Day, commemorating not only his own military service, but also that of his father.

His father Alec fought in World War One on the Western Front in France, and came home to tell the story, ultimately living to the age of 96.

Thomson is today himself aged 90, and has proud service to look back on, having been in the Scottish regiment of the British Army serving in Palestine from 1946 to 1948.

His memory of war stretches back earlier, to World War Two, when he was a police messenger on a pushbike in his home country of Scotland.

Now a proud Kiwi, Thomson moved here with his late wife Daphne in 1951. The former deputy principal at Ashburton College has been an RSA member ever since, and attending Anzac Day services is something he looks forward to each year.

At the civic service in Ashburton today he will wear his father’s medals on the right of his blazer and his own on the left as he takes the honour of laying a wreath at the cenotaph for those lost in the First World War and at Gallipoli.

Meanwhile, thousands are expected to turn out to Anzac Day Services throughout Mid Canterbury, where the forecast is for low cloud or fog, to then become fine with northerlies and reaching a maximum of 19 degrees.

RSA Ashburton president Merv Brenton emphasised the call to all who lived in New Zealand to attend services.

“We want all New Zealanders to feel they can come and commemorate Anzac Day as it should be,” Brenton said.

“It’s special and it’s a remembrance of those who have made that sacrifice in war – their time, their health, even their own lives.”

At the Ashburton Cenotaph in Baring Square West there is a dawn service at 6.30am, and a civic service and wreath laying at 11am.

Setting the scene in foggy conditions yesterday, Compulsory Military Training members laid out about 22 white crosses on the lawn near the cenotaph.

A cemetery service will be held 9am at the Services Plot 48 Bremners Road, and a 7.30am service will be held at the Hakatere Marae. A march begins 9.30am in Methven from the Memorial Arch, with a 10am service at the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall Methven.

While all Mid Canterbury services are going ahead as planned, attendants can expect to see increased security as police remain committed to providing a visible presence nationwide for the safety and reassurance of the community.

Tourists flock to track

Tourists and school parties have been flocking to the Mt Somers track over the warmer months, but those who look after the Mid Canterbury hiking trail say winter is a busy time too.

“We do get people who like to walk it in the snow,” said farmer Barry Austin, who chairs the Mt Somers Walkway Society.

The society’s volunteer members are currently working on the network of tracks around Mt Somers, including filling potholes in access roads.

Austin said the work was ongoing as members continually improved the walking tracks to almost Great Walk status.

A 600m section after the Woolshed Creek Hut has been rerouted to make it easier for trampers of all ages and ability.

Austin said the society was granted $10,000 to hire a small digger to relocate the track leading to a rocky outcrop known as Maiden’s Relief.

In brief Extra flyover spots The New Zealand Defence Force have added to their list of locations they intend to fly their P-3K2 Orion aircraft over to two Mid Canterbury locations as part of Anzac Day celebrations. The aircraft was initially planned to only fly over Methven, but will now also pay a visit to Ashburton. The aircraft is expected to fly over Ashburton at 9.23am and Methven at 9.28am.

The given schedule may change due to weather and operational requirements.

Last farmers’ market

Over the summer and autumn, there has been heavy traffic on the track, including international and domestic tourists and school parties from all over Canterbury.

“One night we had 64 people in Woodshed Creek, including a school party of 22.”

Many trampers bought tents, which they pitched outside the

hut which is one of two on the track.

He said international tourists were continuing to choose the Mt Somers Walkway over the country’s named Great Walks.

“You see their little vans parked there and I think they want a nice walk in good New Zealand scenery, but their budget is not as big.”

ty of interesting features, including a natural rock pool and canyons, and there are other tracks for shorter walks.

To help spread the word about the track’s attractions, the society has started a social media page that it hopes locals and tourists will like to keep up with developments.

New signs, same message A little piece of history was updated in Ashburton yesterday, with the old West Street carpark signage being replaced with new, international standard signs. ​Three blue, one metre signs displaying a giant P (for parking) have been installed along the entrances to the carpark which will help to advertise the area to passing traffic along State Highway One (West Street).

The signs align with internationally recognised advertising for parking, so through-traffic will be able to identify that public parking is available.

The previous signage, which is believed to have been in the car-

park since the mid-1990s, featured the Ashburton District Council’s old clock tower and mountains logo.

This iconic image would have been relatively new at the time, after the County and Borough councils amalgamated in 1989 to form the Ashburton District Council.

The West Street carpark includes areas with both unlimited and time restricted, 120 minute parks, providing easy access to businesses across the road on West Street and to the central business district across the railway line.

There are also two electric vehicle charging stations towards the West Street/Moore Street end of the carpark.​​

The ever-popular Ashburton Farmers’ Market is set to shut for another season. The last market will be held this Saturday, in its usual location at the north end of the West Street carpark. Organiser Judith Crozier said Fat Alberts Smokehouse would be making a special visit to the market along with all the regular sellers. The market will be open from 9am till 12.30pm.

Boil water notice The Ashburton District Council issued a precautionary boil water notice for the Methven-Springfield water supply on Tuesday evening.

Residents connected to this scheme are advised to boil their drinking water, water used in food preparation and for hygiene purposes for at least three minutes before consuming.

Nominations called Minister of Health David Clark is seeking nominations from Mid Cantabrians who have benefited from the dedication of health volunteers. Nominations close May 29 for the 2019 Minister of Health Volunteer Awards, which will be presented during National Volunteer Week, June 16 to 22.

Clark said great work goes on every day by tens of thousands of volunteers across the country’s health services, including hospitals, hospices and non-governmental organisations.

Christchurch accident Two people were trapped in two separate vehicles following a major collision on Marshland Rd in east Christchurch yesterday afternoon.

Police reported one person had been seriously hurt.

‘We were expecting the worst’

It had been the “worst night” and “worst day” of Sir Richard Hayes’ life, until the moment he saw his three crewmen on a beach having miraculously survived a helicopter crash near the Auckland Islands.

Southern Lakes Helicopters pilot Andrew Hefford, paramedic John Lambeth and winchman Lester Stevens swam 20 minutes in the dark to a beach on one of the subantarctic islands, 450km south of New Zealand.

About 8pm on Monday their helicopter had crashed on descent into Enderby Island, where they planned to spend a night before performing a medical evacuation from a fishing vessel the following morning.

Hayes, chief executive of Southern Lakes Helicopters, was on one of two rescue helicopters that set off Tuesday morning to search for the missing men.

He told media they were “expecting the worst”.

“It was the worst day, worst night – longest night. The whole trip to the Auckland Islands yesterday [Tuesday] was virtually flown in silence.

“We were expecting the worst, and that turned 180 degrees and

The men were in their cold water immersion suits, typically designed to maintain a comfortable body temperature in conditions as low as -30°C, and were buoyant like a lifejacket.

They had made it to the closest shore despite the darkness and with no lights on the island to

guide their way. It was a cool 10°C at the time they were believed to be in the water.

It was not known how far they swam, but they were picked up at Ranui Cove on the main island, between 2 and 3km from the helicopter wreckage.

Hayes, who has over 40 years’ experience as a helicopter pilot and flown over 30,000 hours, said it was a particularly emotional op-

eration given those involved.

“We have done hundreds of rescues over the years, but when it is close to home, it really is hard, and yesterday was the hardest.

“These are all key personnel that have worked with us for years, and the thought that we had lost them was a pretty hard pill to swallow, but it was certainly a great trip home.”

Hayes said it was about a 3.5

hour flight from Invercargill, but they did not spend much time down there as they spotted the crew on first approach.

“On first approach we could see them on the beach, one of my crewmen spotted them.

“They were wet and cold, had spent a night out in the bush. A cold front came through, with wet and squally conditions. They were glad to have a cup of coffee and a bite to eat.”

Stevens and Hefford were briefly knocked out on impact.

Hayes said their survival came down to training and instinct.

“Lester was knocked out on impact and had no idea how he extracted himself from the aircraft, maybe it goes back to the HUET [Helicopter Underwater Escape Training] required to do any oceanic flights.

“He came to in the water, and everyone got out as the helicopter was still floating, leaving them to a 20 minute swim to the shore.

“I believe the training, any training be it flying or emergency, does kick in and in the case of Lester and even Andrew, who was knocked out for a short period, survival instinct and training kicks in.

“It is just great to have them back home.”

Arden to co-host summit NZME Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has personally been in contact with Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg and a number of other tech company bosses over the upcoming Christchurch Call summit in Paris.

She has also been in contact with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about the event, which Ardern will co-chair with French President Emmanuel Macron.

In a tweet, Trudeau thanked Ardern for calling him and asked that New Zealand and Canada “keep working together to fight hatred and violence and create safer and more inclusive societies”.

Details at this stage are limited but Ardern said more information will be provided in the coming weeks.

Speaking to media in Auckland, Ardern spoke of creating a “broad alliance” between Governments and tech companies to address the problems.

“We can’t, I think, step away from that responsibility. But nor can internet companies step away from theirs as well.”

She said to meet the Christchurch Call’s goal, Governments and tech companies need to work together.

“That’s the sort of collaboration [Governments] have been seeking, and that’s what we are responding to.”

Ardern said she had spoken to “a range” of tech sector chief executives, including those from Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft and Google.

She has spoken to Zuckerberg personally about the initiative.

The conversation, she said, was “very much around March 15, our experiences and what we hoped to do collaboratively in France when we come together”.

She said there were condolences shared when the pair spoke, but Ardern did not want to get into individual details of that conversation.

Across the next two days, Ardern would be meeting tech companies and a “core group of leaders”.

Information on who those leaders were will be made available “further down the track,” as will more information about the event itself.

But the end of the summit would not mark the end of the issue of extremism online, Ardern told media yesterday.

She pointed out that freedom of speech would not be under attack.

“We’re very focused on eradicating those extreme acts of terrorism online”.

She said extremism online was a global issue, that required a global response.

Sri Lanka bomb toll rises aap

Sri Lankan police have detained 18 more people for questioning over the Easter Sunday attacks on churches and hotels, claimed by the Islamic State group, as the death toll climbed to 359.

The extremist Islamic State made its claim after Sri Lankan officials said the suicide bombings in Sri Lanka were carried out in retaliation for attacks on two mosques in New Zealand that killed 50 people in March.

Police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera said the death toll had risen to 359 from 321 overnight, with about 500 people wounded, but did not give a breakdown of casualties from the three churches and four hotels hit by the bombers.

Sri Lankan police said they have carried out a controlled explosion of a suspicious motor-scooter parked near a popular cinema in Colombo.

There were no explosives in the vehicle, police said.

Junior defence minister Ruwan Wijewardene told parliament two Sri Lankan Islamist groups – the National Thawheed Jama’ut and Jammiyathul Millathu Ibrahim – were responsible for the blasts.

Police continued searching homes across the island nation overnight, leading to the detention of 18 more people.

The overnight raids included areas near the Gothic-style St Sebastian church in Negombo, north of the capital, where scores were killed. An unspecified number of people were detained in western Sri Lanka.

The Easter Sunday bombings shattered the relative calm that has existed in Buddhist-majority Sri Lanka since a civil war against mostly Hindu, ethnic Tamil separatists ended 10 years ago, and raised fears of a return to sectarian violence.

Sri Lanka’s 22 million people

include minority Christians, Muslims and Hindus.

The attacks have already foreshadowed a shake-up of Sri Lankan security forces, with President Maithripala Sirisena saying he planned to change some of his defence chiefs after criticism that intelligence warnings of an Easter attack were ignored.

Sources told Reuters Sri Lankan intelligence officials had been warned by India hours before the blasts that attacks by Islamists were imminent. It was not clear what action, if any, was taken.

Most of those killed and

wounded were Sri Lankans, although government officials said 38 foreigners were also killed.

Junior defence minister Wijewardene said investigators believed revenge for the March 15 mosque attacks in the New Zealand city of Christchurch was the motive but did not elaborate.

The Sri Lankan government has imposed emergency law and an overnight curfew. It said it has also blocked online messaging services to stop the spread of inflammatory rumours that it feared could incite communal clashes.

North Korea recently calling for the replacement of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as a negotiator.

In addition to the increasing hostility toward Pompeo, North Korea last week tested a “new type of tactical guided weapon,” its state news agency reported. It was the country’s first known weapons test since February’s failed US-North Korea summit in Hanoi.

Hong Kong jails pro-democracy activists AAP Two of the leaders of Hong Kong’s 2014 Umbrella Movement have been sentenced to 16 months in prison for their roles in organising the 79-day protest.

Benny Tai and Chan Kinman, both respected professors and democracy leaders, were earlier found guilty of conspiracy alongside seven other protest leaders.

Reverend Chu Yiu-ming, who was also found guilty of conspiracy, received a suspended sentence due to his long commitment to public service and human rights, including his role in helping Tiananmen Square activists escape China in 1989.

The trio originally proposed

the protest movement in 2013 under the moniker Occupy Central with Love and Peace and are considered its founding architects.

Five other protest leaders were also sentenced yesterday, with two receiving eightmonth prison terms on public nuisance charges.

Two of the group also received suspended sentences while student leader Tommy Cheung was sentenced to 200 hours of community service as he was only 20 at the time of the demonstration.

In his sentencing, Judge Johnny Chan said none of the leaders had showed regret for their role in leading the protests.

The packed and emotion-

al public gallery applauded loudly, however, when Chan showed leniency due to age or previous public service.

The sentencing of legislator Tanya Chan, who was found guilty on public nuisance charges alongside the group, was delayed for six weeks as she must undergo surgery for a life-threatening medical condition.

The verdict concludes one of Hong Kong’s most high profile trials in recent years.

The Umbrella Movement was held in September 2014 in response to Beijing’s decision to not extend universal suffrage to Hong Kong in the election of its top leader.

What started as an occupation of Hong Kong’s gov-

ernment district gained significant momentum in late September when police teargassed protesters.

Images of the protesters defending themselves with umbrellas became one of the most iconic moments for the former colony since its handover from Britain to China in 1997.

Protest leader Joshua Wong, who also stood trial for his role in leading the Umbrella Movement said on Twitter yesterday that “Hongkongers are in the endgame now”.

Wong’s tweet was a reference to Hong Kong’s autonomy from China, extended until 2047, which many democracy activists say is already under threat from Beijing.

Remember them every day A

gentle and low fog sat across the Baring Square West grounds yesterday morning, the bottom of the township’s cenotaph barely visible among the mist.

It painted a truly incredible picture and, had I not been confined to the seat of my vehicle, I would have happily paused to capture the moment to share with the world.

Poignant for its significance in moments of remembrance today during Anzac Day services, the cenotaph is both a mesmerising and haunting object – one which tells tale of a significant moment in our history and also lends itself to memories of a time in which the world wasn’t quite so harmonious.

Today we pay thanks and offer remembrance to those who so bravely left their lives behind to go and stand up for a better New Zealand – their sacrifices are still widely felt now and without their dedication to our country we could be faced with a very different kind of life.

So it’s important we remember and pay our respects today.

But it’s also something we should be doing every other day

of the year too.

We spend a huge amount of time in the lead up to Anzac Day talking about the sacrifices made and lending our hands to our veterans, but post Anzac Day there seems to be very little said and spoken about until the lead up to the next Anzac Day rolls around.

We should be placing our arms firmly around the shoulders of those heroes daily.

Without fail.

The battles of war don’t just end when a solider comes home from deployment.

There are countless post-event issues that can arise and provide constant struggles for, not only those individuals involved, but also their wider network; partners, children, family and friends.

So it’s important we keep the discussions of support and respect going for 365 days of the year and not just focus all that energy into the one day and then only fleetingly allow ourselves to think about it during other parts of the year.

Almost everyone should be able to find a personal connection to war and what soliders from both the past and the present go through while serving our country, so seeking out the opportunities to lend a hand shouldn’t be too hard.

It might be a grandparent, great-grandparent, parent, friend or even a neighbour, they are out there among us and the memories are still very much raw and the support is

much appreciated.

So, today, if you are planning on heading along to one of the various services across the Ashburton District, or marking such a huge day in our history in another, more personal way, take the opportunity to stop and think about how to do this every other day of the year as well and how you might be able to make that little bit of difference going forward.

But do treat today for what it is – our national day of remembrance.

Stand side-by-side with others and pay your respects to those brave men, women and animals who went to battle for a better New Zealand.

We will remember them.

very April, across the country, we reflect and remember the sacrifices made

by New Zealanders in overseas conflicts and peacekeeping missions.

That is what Anzac Day is about for me, it is about sacrifice.

The sacrifices that individual men and women in our country have made and continue to make, so the rest of us can live our lives in safety.

It’s a time of remembrance, to show gratitude and national pride for all of our service men and women. And, a time for reflection. To reflect on the lives of the brave Ashburton soldiers that never made it home, and those that did, but were affected for the rest of their lives.

Last November, we marked the centenary of the armistice that ended the First World War in 1918.

At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, brutal conflict and war gave way to peace.

landed at Gallipoli in Turkey, the site of New Zealand’s first major battle of the First World War. Two thousand seven hundred New Zealand soldiers lost their lives during this battle alone.

That loss is still felt profoundly by many New Zealand families.

Around 100,000 New Zealanders, 10 per cent of our population at the time, served overseas during the war. This included more than 2200 Maori, serving in the Maori (Pioneer) Battalion.

Eighteen thousand New Zealanders were killed over the course of the war.

Since then, thousands more New Zealand service people have travelled to conflict zones around the world.

They have served and died

in the spirit of New Zealand’s commitment to global peace and stability.

Anzac Day is also an opportunity to recognise the continued sacrifice of our service people and veterans.

This year, through our expressions of love, compassion and unity, we reaffirm our commitment to peace and freedom of faith, not only in the aftermath of war, but every day.

On Anzac Day, I’ll be in Ashburton, speaking at the 9am service.

There are a number of services being held all over the region, and I encourage you to attend one of them to pay tribute to our veterans, and their spouses and families.

Wear a poppy on your shirt, go to a dawn service, spend the day with your friends and family – whatever you do this Anzac Day, take some time to reflect on why we are able to do these things; due to the men and women that came before us.

Dryland farmers shine in awards

Rangiora farmers Duncan and Tina Mackintosh will open up their farm gates to the farming public at a May 10 field day as the regional supreme winners of the Canterbury Ballance Farm Environment Awards.

On the day, the Mackintoshes will explain their roles as self-described specialist dryland farmers at White Rock Mains farm and will host a range of speakers.

The couple have just established a 91-hectare QEII covenant on their sheep, beef and dairy support farm.

Their hard work to make their environment prosper impressed the judges in the lead-up to the 11 regional award winners being announced in March. Award winners are singled out for their work in sustainable farming and growing and the finalists will vie for the Gordon Stephenson Trophy at a showcase event in Hamilton on June 6.

In the meantime, the Mackintoshes are readying their property for an influx of visitors at the field day.

A line-up of speakers will talk on subjects including farm technology and its influence on farmers’ decision making, QEII covenanting, gorse control and funding options for planting trees in sensitive farm areas. Other talks will touch on soil moisture probes, variable rate aerial fertiliser spreading and erosion-prone

The Mackintoshes are fourth generation farmers and their involvement with many social initiatives also impressed the judges.

The family’s local school, North Loburn, is among the beneficiaries of their support through the work of Tina in a Garden to Table programme.

pils growing garden produce, to picking, cooking and eating the end product. Tina is advocating for the inclusion of meat in the programme to teach kids about where it comes from and its nutritional benefits.

The Mackintoshes entered the awards to get a feel for where they were sitting in the farm environment area.

“We’re open to ideas and being challenged. While the environmental side of things is important, the awards are not just looking at the environmental footprint of the farm – it’s the whole system, so there’s that much more to what you can learn from the judges.”

The couple also won section awards for the people side of farming, livestock farming, innovation and predator control categories.

Other section winners were Pencarrow Farm for soil management, agri-business management, sustainability and stewardship, water quality and climate stewardship, Garrickfield Farm for agri-science, Ngai Tahu Farming – Dairy Support for water management The New Zealand Farm Environment Trust is taking registrations on the day for the White Rock Mains field day which will include a farm tour in four-wheeldrive vehicles.

Visitors are being reminded to take biosecurity precautions, such as wearing clean footwear and removing mud or vegetation from vehicles.

South Canterbury’s two big apple growers have experienced mixed seasons.

Red Martin, manager of MA Orchards at Levels near Temuka, said they had their best-ever season: 4200 tonnes of honeycrisp apples harvested this year, well up on the previous year’s 2300 tonnes.

Andrew Forward, manager of Waipopo Orchards at Seadown, just north of Timaru, said it had not been quite as successful for them due mainly to wet weather in November and December.

“The wet weather has been bad for us and has affected the final size on our reds, although our braeburns have been okay.

“We’ve had 300 bins of honeycrisps which are in bins that weigh between 300 and 500 kilos.’’

Fifty per cent of what Waipopo grows on its 80ha orchards is of the honeycrisp variety, which are transported to T&G Global in Nelson and packed for export to the United States.

The remainder are royal gala, red delicious and braeburn varieties, which are destined for markets in Asia and Europe and packed at the orchard.

Packing of royal gala began at Waipopo this month and harvesting of red delicious and braeburn will probably begin in the third or fourth week of May. MA Orchards grows only honeycrisp apples.

Picking started in late February and finished at the beginning of this month.

They have 75ha in production. Once picked, the fruit is also trucked to Nelson

and packed at T&G Global.

Most of the apples are for the American market, but some will also be sent to Canada and several Asian countries.

Waipopo has five orchard sites. The first two sites were planted in 2012, the third in 2013, the fourth in 2014 and the last in 2015. ‘’All orchards are now under transition to organics, with the first orchard set to gain status for the 2020 season,’’ Martin said.

They had a harvest crew of 230 pickers and a support crew of about 30 to 40 supervising.

Forward said they had 14 permanent New Zealand staff, another seven New Zealand residents were casuals and the remainder were backpackers and RSE (Recognised Seasonal Employer) workers who can stay for a maximum of seven months. ‘’We’ve had two crews, the first arrived in late October-November and will go through to May. ‘’The second group arrived around February and will stay through the winter.’’

Forward said the RSEs were good workers and he had been in the original pilot of the scheme. ‘’A lot of Kiwis don’t understand the money they earn is to pay for education for their children, the development of their village’s water and to buy a lot of equipment for their plantations. ‘’It makes a hell of a difference to their lives.’’

He said it was difficult finding New Zealanders to work in the orchards because the region had high levels of employment. ‘’We’d be stuffed without them [the RSEs],’’ he said.

M. bovis clarity sought

Sheep and beef farmers are seeking further clarity on the surge in in farm numbers believed to have mycoplasma bovis as a result of increased surveillance.

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) announced last week that officers would contact 300 farmers over the next few weeks as a result of them carrying high-risk animals.

About 250 of them are expected to receive notices of direction restricting animal movements and 10-12 per cent to end up confirmed with the cattle disease.

About two-thirds of the properties are beef farms and the rest are dairy operations Beef+Lamb New Zealand chairman Andrew Morrison said many cattle farmers would have picked up that many of the properties being investigated were beef farms.

He said beef farmers had contacted the industry body about the surge in property numbers and had sought greater clarity about how this came about.

“In particular, the large number of beef properties anticipated to be put under movement control

Morrison said Beef+Lamb would be working with DairyNZ and MPI this week to provide greater detail on how this situation has arisen, the wider strat-

egy and timing and how farmers could best manage risks and potential disruption to their businesses.

He said the industry body would support all farmers affected by the M. bovis programme.

“We are helping farmers to operate under legal restrictions, make plans for the future and help with preparing compensa-

tion claims through our [compensation assistance] team.’’

The ministry expects three-quarters of the properties will come from the South Island once a full regional breakdown is completed over the next few weeks.

Yet to be confirmed is if many of the new farms identified are from the Ashburton district.

By the last count about 40 per cent of the 161 properties confirmed positive with M. bovis were in the district, including active and cleared farms.

MPI announced the spike last week and said it was increasing its disease programme activity in the lead up to autumn and winter stock movements to limit the risk of M. bovis spreading and to give farmers as much certainty as possible heading into a busy farming period.

Programme director Geoff Gwyn said more properties than usual were expected to be placed under movement restrictions because of increased surveillance late last year.

He said the surge in property numbers did not represent an increased spread of the disease or a change in confidence that eradication would be achieved.

Farmers were worried that MPI had enough staff to carry out disease tracing.

The owners of about 800 properties are also being contacted about low-risk animal movements to prevent the spread of M. bovis. Less than 0.4 per cent of them are expected to be confirmed with the disease.

Water tax turnaround relief for farmers Irrigators are relieved that the government has turned its back on introducing a water tax in the near future.

IrrigationNZ chief executive Elizabeth Soal said the decision was good for everybody.

“The Tax Working Group proposed a nationwide tax on all water use including for hydroelectricity, household, business and agricultural use. That would have resulted in higher power and food prices for households and businesses and higher rates bills for everyone.’’

She said farmers and growers had been taking steps to reduce environmental impacts at considerable cost and this was already having an impact on water quality.

Many water quality indicators had shown improvement in the latest dataset including nitrogen, she said.

“All of us want to see improved water quality,” she said.

“Both the government and regional councils have signalled there will be further regulation to improve water quality and these changes have further financial costs for irrigators.’’

Soal said introducing new taxes would have made it difficult for farmers to continue to invest in improving farming environments.

She said existing incentives encouraged efficient water use including electricity costs and regulatory nutrient limit rules which require farmers to only use water when needed.

Farmers and irrigation schemes have invested $1.7 billion to modernise their systems since 2011, resulting in major improvements in water efficiency.

Millions in interest sought NZME Millions of dollars are at stake as Mainzeal litigants head back to court on Wednesday, May 8, for a decision on costs and interest payments.

Creditors of the failed construction company were owed $110 million when it collapsed in early 2013, and High Court judge Francis Cooke ruled in February that four directors, including former Prime Minister and Mainzeal chair Jenny Shipley, were liable for a total of $36m.

However, the judgment didn’t include any decision on costs and interest payments – hence the upcoming hearing.

Cooke will be asked to decide how much the directors should pay in costs and will rule on whether any interest due to creditors is on top of, or included in, the $36 million award.

Liquidators BDO argue interest should be added to the existing compensation, given creditors have waited since 2013 for money they are owed.

Whichever Justice Cooke decides, the amounts are in the millions. Costs could be in the order of $2-to-$3m, if an award of costs of $2.42m in the kiwifruit growers case against MPI earlier this year can be used as a guide.

And if the judge adds interest on the judgment sum that would mean the amount payable by the directors would likely be significantly higher. If, for example, the judge was to use the 5 per cent interest rate set out in the 2011 Judicature (Prescribed Rate of Interest) Order, that could add approximately $10.8m to the $36m liability.

That means interest and costs could potentially lift the compensation payment to $49m.

No one was available at Mainzeal liquidator BDO to comment, and Jack Hodder, the QC for Shipley and fellow ex-directors Clive Tilby and Peter Gomm, did not want to comment on the issues at this stage.

A bystander might expect the Mainzeal court process will be on hold until the appeal later this

year, once the decision on costs and interest rates is made, but that is not assured.

The next stage, if the case follows a common legal process, would see the liquidators ask the court for the money the creditors are owed. Then the Mainzeal directors could apply for what is known as a “stay of execution”, which means they don’t have to

pay any money until after the appeal has been heard.

However, it’s not unusual for defendants wanting a stay of execution to be asked to put up the money awarded against them, to reassure the court they have the ability to pay. This often involves putting the funds into a trust account or similar.

But in this case it’s not clear

Instead, there’s a possible $13-to-$26m shortfall.

Richard Yan, the head of Mainzeal’s Chinese parent company Richina, has the biggest potential liability under Justice Cooke’s judgment – the full $36m. So he could be expected to pay the lion’s share. But he might be keen for his fellow directors to cough up some of the money. Which could mean a few millions for Shipley and the other directors.

Specialist insurance lawyer Andrew Hooker says in a case like this, the judge would be likely to grant a stay of execution, if asked, with a bond or security.

“The dominating principle is the plaintiff is entitled to the fruits of the judgment, but there is no precedent around who should put up the money.”

The UK has followed Germany in defying the US push to ban telecommunications giant Huawei – which the White House has accused of espionage and sanctions-busting – according to a media report.

British Prime Minister Theresa May has given the go-ahead to the Chinese telecoms giant Huawei to help build the UK’s new 5G network, despite warnings of the potential threat to national security, the Daily Telegraph says.

The UK paper said the National Security Council (NSC), which is chaired by May, agreed on Tuesday to allow the firm limited access to build “non-core” infrastructure such as celltower antennas.

Huawei NZ deputy chief executive Andrew Bowater has told the Herald his company is willing to make the same concession here – and even have its staff barred from access to Spark’s planned 5G mobile network.

The Telegraph says May’s cabinet was split with some ministers, including Home Secretary Sajid Javid, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson, International Trade Secretary Liam Fox and International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt, raising concerns about the decision.

The NSC and Downing Street refused comment.

Just three weeks ago, the UK government released a report that was highly critical of Huawei’s technology.

It detailed “a large amount of amateur-hour engineering flubs

by Huawei,” Herald columnist Juha Saarinen summarised.

But Huawei NZ’s Bowater said while the account of (in his words) “shoddy code” made for “uncomfortable reading,” it was a technical and process issue that could be addressed. The report did not detail any “back doors” or mechanisms deliberately designed to facilitate espionage.

Mid-April, Germany’s telecommunications regulator has sent a clear signal that it will not ban Huawei from its country’s 5G mobile network upgrades.

Jochen Homann, the president of the Bundesnetzagentur, or federal network agency, told the Financial Times, “The position the Bundesnetzagentur takes is that no equipment supplier, including Huawei, should, or may, be specifically excluded.”

Last month, the US ambassador to Berlin warned the German

Government that Washington would consider scaling back intelligence co-operation should Huawei be given a role in the 5G rollout.

On November 28 last year, the GCSB blocked a Spark 5G network upgrade proposal that included Huawei gear.

GCSB minister Andrew Little says Huawei is not banned per se.

Spark and Huawei are welcome to submit a revised proposal that addresses the (never-made-public) concerns raised by the spy agency.

But nearly five months later, Spark says it’s still assessing its position and has yet to decide if it will re-submit.

2degrees, which uses Huawei gear throughout its network, is also expected to run an upgrade proposal past the GCSB. Vodafone NZ, which primarily partners with Huawei rival Nokia Networks (formerly Nokia Seimens Networks) is not.

Grilled ham and peach salad 4 peaches, stoned and halved 200g ham, thickly sliced 2 baby cos lettuces, washed and leaves separated 1/4 C pistachios, shelled, toasted, chopped

Dressing 2T olive oil 1T white balsamic vinegar 2t honey 1t wholegrain mustard ■■ Preheat grill plate on high and brush with 1T oil.

■■ Cook peaches, cut-side down for 1-2 minutes. Set aside.

■■ Cook ham in batches for 2-3 minutes each side, until charred.

Tear into bite-size pieces.

■■ Arrange cos, peaches and ham in a serving bowl. Sprinkle with pistachios.

■■ In a jug, combine dressing ingredients. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Drizzle over salad.

Club news 14 Ashburton Guardian Ashburton Electronic and Keyboard Club On Monday night we had 40 members attending our monthly meeting, which this time was hosted for the first time by Alan Andrews.

John, our president, welcomed everyone and after any notices handed the evening over to Alan.

We had Bev French playing as the half hour slot takes a lot of music and Bev had a great variety with River Rose, You are my Sunshine, Don’t Fence Me In, Place Where I Worship and many others, lovely start to the evening.

Alan then introduced his first player Karen Smith on keyboard with the Water is Wide, End of the World and Seventy Six Trombones. Perfection a very talented player.

Next to entertain were the Keyboard Group, (Michael, Janet, Rose and Barbara) unfortunately Iris was unwell so couldn’t be there but with the help of her music on a USB, we managed well and also included harmony with a number of our songs. Sioux City Sue, One Dozen Roses and Alexander’s Ragtime Band, Sentimental Journey and I’m going to Knock on your Door. Great selection of toe-tapping tunes.

Michael Kingsbury was next with Hello Mary Lou, Days of Wine & Roses and a Jazz piece Ruby Baby.

Our host Alan then played the piano, Gloaming and Rememberance.

The raffles were drawn next with the winners, delighted with their prizes, M Twamley, L Boud, T Lamont and N Farrell.

Alan then read a poem with a farming theme. Audrey and Rose were next to entertain us with The China Doll Parade and Playful Rondo, lovely listening to these two.

Colin Crone was next and played an amplified Ukulele. Tum Balalaika, a Russian Tune, Sunrise Sunset and finished with a Country Dance selection for classical guitar, very different but nice, this was followed by the Accordia Group, (Irene, Cushla, Lorraine, Peter and Robin and with Bernard being away Michael was the keyboard player), well done, they had a couple of medleys, Linden Swing Bracket, and an Irish Selection including The Green Grass of Antrim.

Alan then finished the evening with a piano selection Release Me and Sailor.

John then thanked Alan for his evening’s programme and commented on the fact that every evening we have a great variety of entertainment and all very different.

Supper followed.

Ashburton Garden Club The Ashburton Garden Club held their meeting on the April 17 at 2pm at the Seniors Centre.

Nancy Ridder welcomed 24 members to the meeting, we had a brief business meeting then Nancy introduced us to Rosemary Case who was our guest speaker.

She shared her photos of the Chelsea Show which she attended in 2015. She gave some history of the show which began in 1913 in a single tent.

It now covers 66 acres taking 33 days to erect and set up, yet five days to dismantle. The attached Chelsea Veterans Hospi-

Her photos covered a broad category of plants, flowers, vegetables, all of which were displayed very imaginatively. Also intriguing, were the display of glass flowers and copper leaves not to mention a deer carved in wood besides other wood sculptures.

Notable were the wire shapes of animals such as rabbit, snail, elephant, giraffe, each covered in turf such as ready made lawn. Even plywood moulded to represent a waves, that too was covered in turf, just incredible how the presenters created all the fascinating exhibitions.

As for the floral displays, there wasn’t any category missing from the wonderful displays presented.

Ashburton Golf Club Young Wilson continued his golfing development with a superb 47 stableford points on Saturday. This young chap is a firm favourite with all the Brandon members and one of Matt’s brightest prodigies, all of whom are coming along in leaps and bounds.

The future for golf in the region sure looks good under Matt’s guidance.

Saturday though was a pairs combined game and Wilson needed a strong partner, luckily enough Steve Vivian managed to snaffle himself 34 points, to beat Hoppy and Lefty, who had 41 and 40 respectively, on countback.

Sunday saw pennants teams head off around the district.

Hoppy’s Redpath boys were the men’s leading lights with a great win against Tinwald on their own course, with star of the day Tuffy shooting a 74. Next score in was Shane Moye’s team who scored a massive five points, unfortunately their opponents got 12, oh well never mind.

Hamish’s boys had a tough two rounds at Tinwald and had two close defeats. Tom’s young pups got mauled by the Mayfield big dogs, I don’t think the boys have got any physical damage but the mental and emotional scars could last for years.

Finally the rudderless ship that is the Patterson team, led by chief mutineers Gaby and Spud, found the sea a bit choppy down in Timaru.

Only Tiny Tim managed to tip-toe through the tulips, (you may need to Google Tiny Tim!!) for a win.

The rest of the crew were looking for strong leadership which was sadly lacking, and a 14 to 3 defeat ensued. I think we all know what needs to happen for the next game. You have got to love your pennants.

The Tinwald Tavern was full of hard luck stories and bad bounces on Sunday evening.

A great shining light was the ladies’ week-

end pennants team who journeyed down to Fairlie and beat a strong Gleniti side 9.5 to 2.5, wel done ladies.

Today on Anzac Day we have the annual battle of the sexes for the Baker Trophy.

Ashburton Horticultural Society President Trevor Gamblin welcomed 12 members to our monthly meeting.

Our guest speaker was Cyril Keen – 36 years ago Cyril joined a syndicate and purchased land in Cromwell to develop as an orchard.

In the early days there were lots of setbacks but they stuck at it and now Sarita Orchard is one of the top exporters with 75 per cent of cherries to the Asian market.

They grow 16 different varieties, have a staff of 40 and a computerised grading machine has cut labour costs.

The orchard has its own self-contained camping ground that can house up to 40 staff.

Cherry picking is from mid January to mid February and the past three years have been bumper crops.

Cyril feels he has made a great investment.

We had a great table show with fruit and vege from four members.

Ashburton Musical Club Our first concert for the year Curtain Raiser was held on Saturday, April 13 at the Sinclair Centre.

Ashburton Pakeke Lions Club

President Ron welcomed members to the April meeting of the Pakeke Lions Club held at the Ashburton Aviation Museum.

Lion Bob introduced members of the New Academy Dance Group featuring girls and boys from three years to adults.

These dancers are tutored very professionally by Madi Wilson and Anna Raukawa and displayed all their skills in high energy modern dancing which very much enjoyed by those present.

The group also entertains at various public events, charity events and rest homes etc. and draws children from many schools in Mid Canterbury.

They also have a dance-fit group for adults. The group was warmly thanked

by Sheilagh Moore who presented them with a Certificate of Appreciation and Easter eggs.

After a meal provided by members of the Aviation Museum, Lion Graeme introduced the guest speaker Owen Moore, who gave a very informative and interesting talk on the beginnings of the museum and mentioned those members who got the project off the ground 45 years ago.

He then gave a slide show of the many aircraft that are on display at the museum and stories on their acquisitions with special interest on the Hawker Jump Jet, (being the only one on display in the Southern Hemisphere) and also the building of the hangers that house this wonderful exhibition.

Owen was thanked by Lion Bob and presented with a Certificate of Appreciation.

President Ron informed members that a defibrillator has been purchased for Tuarangi Home and will be presented to them in the near future.

Raffles were drawn and The Tailtwister extracted fines from members.

The meeting closed with the singing of the national anthem.

The Monthly Craft Morning is to be held at the home of Val Cartney on Monday May 13 at 10am. All welcome.

Lions Club of Ashburton Following a very busy month of March, our club is now entering the next stage leading up to our changeover meeting in June.

Of significance, the club is involved in the Ashburton Vintage Car Club Swap Meet, to be held on Saturday, May 4.

Our Lions are involved in gate duties, catering from the usual kiosk as well as the food trailer which will be at the far end of the swap meet area.

Lion Ian Moore and his team have put in a lot of work for this occasion.

In April Lions Barney Parsons and Brent Read organised a most successful cycle tour of the Wilderness Trail on the West Coast. Reports have been most favourable about the whole event, so our thanks to Barney and Brent.

A couple of interesting matters – some Lions had difficulty managing their e-bikes!

And then the majority of bikes on this tour were e-bikes.

Coming up; Two Lions Club golf tournaments. One to be held at Methven on May 9 and one at Mayfield on June 13 respectively, Fellowship Dinners being organised by Mike Hanham. Saturday, May 18,

Big Smoke v Rural Folk Team Challenge and auction on Saturday, June 22. There will be significant advertising in local papers closer to this event.

There has been a huge response to this biennial event and we encourage all interested parties to confirm their bookings with Jo Veale and Sue Letham as soon as possible.

Our Wednesday, May 1 club meeting has the speaker Warren Jannett talking about Life in Aviation.

Mid Canterbury Central Friendship Club ​ ew president Russell Small welcomed N a good turnout of members to our April meeting, including two visitors.

He also advised that South Island Friendship has been wound up, it’s role now filled by New Zealand Friendship Inc. A visit to Greg Lovett’s vegetable processing farm is planned for April 23, with car loads leaving from Ashburton Hotel car park at 1pm.

Our mini speaker was Alan Kingsbury who was raised in Dorie where his father was farming. Alan attended Dorie primary and Ashburton Tech before working for his father and eventually inheriting a part of the farm, along with his two brothers.

He moved to Ashburton in 2000, and is now living in Lochlea Estate.

After tea break Barry Quantock introduced our guest speaker, Paul (Pup) Chamberlain. Pup came from Ohai in Southland but after the family farm was sold he joined the police force in 1978.

He described the various trials he faced in his 38 years with the force, including the 1981 Springbok Tour, the Winz shooting and the Christchurch Earthquake.

He obtained a degree in education and several years ago left the police force and became a rural and public mental health educator, with particular emphasis on the wellness and resilience of schools.

He wound up his talk with some tips on sleeping and maintaining good mental health.

Ken Borland thanked our speaker which concluded the meeting.

Target Shooting Mid Canterbury It was really great to see some of our leading juniors back this week Lanelle McArthur and Megan Snowdon on holiday from varsity and Emma Smith from sickness.

Shania Harrison-Lee produced a very tidy 100.8 to just fend off a challenge from T.J. Stewart with his 99.7. In the double card (20 shot) match the seniors gained a serious foothold when Nina McKenzie set aside her presidential duties and put up two 99s for a total 198.8 to sneak ahead of Shania.

The Coronation club has, this year, moved away from the traditional internal championships (aggregate) and is focusing on using club night as an opportunity to train with a training programme set to start next week.

It will be interesting to see how this works out. TSMC is nothing if not innovative.

Green’s return ‘invaluable’ AAP Stephen Kearney and Craig Bellamy agree that Blake Green will make an essential difference to the Warriors when they seek to end their lean NRL run of Anzac Day results against Melbourne.

Halfback Green is set to return from a groin niggle that has sidelined him for the past two games, both ending in narrow losses for the Warriors.

However, the Kiwi outfit has been forced into an unwanted backline change with centre Solomone Kata left out for compassionate reasons.

His starting place will be taken by former St George Illawarra reserve grader Patrick Herbert, who will make his first-grade debut.

Warriors coach Kearney lamented his team’s lack of control when the result was within their grasp against both South Sydney and North Queensland.

Green’s composure was keenly missed with rookie halfback Chanel Harris-Tavita and an out-of-position Peta Hiku, at five-eighth, unable to pull the right strings when it counted.

Kearney was confident the 32-year-old Green would pass a late fitness test and inject some

composure against a Storm side the Warriors have beaten only twice in their nine Anzac Day meetings since the traditional fixture began a decade ago.

“The last couple of weeks we’ve put ourselves in positions where we’re capable of going on and getting the result but we just haven’t managed it well enough,” Kearney said.

Green was Melbourne coach Bellamy’s first-choice five-eighth outside Cooper Cronk in 2015 and 2016.

Bellamy felt Green was a central figure at the Warriors last year, even before they lost the services of Shaun Johnson.

This season, the wily playmaker is close to essential.

“They’ve obviously missed him,” Bellamy said of Green.

“He’s a really experienced player and he does most of their organising and the running of their game for them, so he will be a real big in for them “We’ve got a heap of respect for Greeny. While he was here he was a wonderful player and he’s doing a great job over there.”

Bellamy said Harris-Tavita had made a good fist of his first three NRL appearances and looked a threat, as well as being defensively impressive.

DCE will thrive as Maroons skipper says Trbojevic AAP Jake Trbojevic says his Manly skipper Daly Cherry-Evans thrives on the captaincy and will go to another level as a player if asked to lead Queensland.

Cherry-Evans is firming as the front-runner to take over from retired Maroons captain Greg Inglis ahead of June’s State of Origin opener despite only receiving a Queensland recall in game three last year.

The playmaker has already received backing from Maroons mentor Kevin Walters while master coach Wayne Bennett claimed Cherry-Evans was the “logical choice” to be named Queensland skipper.

NSW forward Trbojevic admitted he would not relish lining up against Cherry-Evans if his Sea Eagles teammate was named Maroons captain.

But Trbojevic said the classy No.7 was more than ready to lead his state.

“Obviously I wouldn’t want to play him as captain because I know how good he is,” he laughed.

“But without doubt he is ready to lead his state.

“Since he has taken over here at Manly he has done a great job and I think his game has gone to another level.”

Asked if he expected DCE to find another gear if named Maroons skipper, Trbojevic said: “Yeah, I think he plays really well with the captaincy.

“It is something that sits really well with him.

“He could’t put his hand up any more (for Queensland captaincy), his leadership has been awesome – I hope that he gets it.”

Massive concerns over surface AAP Canberra coach Ricky Stuart says he has “massive concerns” about Lottoland’s surface before the Raiders’ NRL clash with Manly.

The Raiders lost Dunamis Lui to a torn anterior cruciate ligament at the ground last season, one of several injuries at the venue in recent years.

Sydney Roosters winger Brett Morris blamed the surface for a knee injury he suffered last month.

Canberra fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad is nursing a knee injury and Stuart admitted he was worried for his players.

“It’s a massive concern. We’ve had some

poor luck there before with an ACL to Dunamis Lui and Shannon Boyd did a medial,” Stuart said. “It’s a real concern for me.”

An NRL pre-season game and an A-League match were abandoned at Lottoland this year due to poor pitch conditions.

Stuart said the surface wasn’t his only concern before Sunday’s round seven clash, labelling Sea Eagles halfback Daly Cherry-Evans one of the best playmakers in the game.

“He’s probably the best in the competition at getting repeat sets. I’ve always admired Daly’s ability, I thought he had an unfair tag on him in regards to Origin status,” Stuart said.

His call-up for game three of 2018 ended a three-year Origin exile after rumours that he had fallen out with senior Queensland players.

But it seems DCE is needed more than ever following Queensland’s loss of greats Inglis, Cameron Smith, Johnathan Thurston, Cooper Cronk and Billy Slater.

Walters gave his strongest indication yet that he was ready to hand Cherry-Evans the captaincy on Tuesday.

“DCE is playing some good footy. We will have to find a captain somewhere and he is certainly putting his hand up to be the next leader of the Maroons,” Walters told media.

Taylor Mile a puzzle for punters NZME A simple question could decide the $100,000 Taylor Mile at Alexandra Park on Friday night.

Does a Miracle Mile winner respect an Auckland Cup winner enough to trail him, especially in a group one sprint at Alexandra Park?

Because that is the puzzle facing punters after Spankem drew inside stablemate Turn It Up in one of the last group ones of the northern season.

The pair will dominate betting on the Mile, which actually reverts to the true mile distance of 1609m after being run over 1700m since 2007.

After winning the Auckland Cup and then the Easter Cup last start, Turn It Up might be the best pacer in the country and in any normal race against even this elite level of opposition he would be expected to lead and win.

But stablemate Spankem is drawn inside him at barrier two and considering he won both a prelude and then the Miracle Mile itself by leading he would seem to have every right to park out his stablemate and try for another all-the-way win if he reaches the front.

It will be a fascinating key plot to the race, with any pre-race indications from trainers the All Stars sure to have a significant impact on the market.

Already the winner of a group one Sires’ Stakes Championship at home if Belle Of Montana can add an Australian group one this weekend she will have gone from unknown maiden to one of the most valuable female pacers in Australasia in just nine starts.

Mercy Hill set to continue winning ways The Richard Collett-trained Mercy Hill is a good chance of making it three successive victories when she contests the Rating 82 Bruce Amies Pharmacy Governor General’s Cup (1600m) at Avondale today.

The four-year-old mare has been installed a $2.60 favourite for the Anzac Day assignment and has won her past two starts over a mile at Counties and Avondale respectively.

“The way she has won her last couple in that sort of company, she probably looks well-placed,” Collett said.

“We would have been keen to take her to a Saturday mile race, but the ones in her grade are on left-handed tracks at the moment.

“She had a little problem, before she raced, with a chip on a fetlock.

She has had a couple of goes running left-handed, including the Warstep Stakes (Listed, 2000m), and failed badly. That is why we have to try and keep her to racing right-handed.

“Her form has come good this prep, but we are just taking it one race at a time.

“She is super hard and fit and we will see what she does tomorrow. We have been lucky that the weather has been kind. She won’t act much on a track rated worse than a slow7, so she is getting pretty much towards the end of her

preparation.” “Next preparation, if placed correctly, she could gain some black-type. She has only really learned to race properly this preparation.”

Collett will have a further two runners on the card at Avondale, including four-year-old staying prospect Hvar, who will be having his second start back from a break, as well as two-win galloper Alternative Fact.

“Hvar’s drawn well in a nice field and found the line well last start over 1400m fresh and could do the same again tomorrow,” Collett said.

“I would be pleasantly surprised if he could win at 1600m. Over ground, after that, I would be more confident.

“Alternative Fact is in a race that she is capable of going close in if she gets a decent trip from the draw (barrier 9).”

Meanwhile, the Pukekohe trainer is assessing his options with Azaboy, who ran out a ready winner at Rotorua on Monday.

“I am just keeping an eye on what the weather does,” Collett said.

“Because he won at Rotorua, if it didn’t get too testing there in three weeks’ time we’d go back. Otherwise if the ground does just get a bit beyond him, I’d look at putting him on a plane and taking him to Sydney.”

Hinds titles go on the line

When the Hinds Squash Rackets Club hosts its annual Hinds Open this weekend, two Ashburton players will be the ones to beat.

The Hinds tournament is the third on the Midlands District calendar this season and the first of the year in Mid Canterbury, and it’s attracted a field of 40 players, the first of whom will take to the court tomorrow night.

In the open grade Lee Barker from the Ashburton Squash Club

is the top seed, with fellow Ashburton players Agustin Maunier and Steve Leckie the second and third seeds.

After the two opening tournaments of the year – the Temuka and Mackenzie opens – Barker is tied at the top of the Midlands Tournament Circuit’s leaderboard with 280 points, along with Alessandro Bonini.

While the big guns battle it out in the open grade, Shane Jones and Adam Clements are the home club’s top prospects, play-

ing in the A grade competition.

Five draws of eight will take to the club’s two courts across the grades, with the main final due to take to the court at around 6.30pm on Saturday.

Hinds Squash spokesperson Abbey Bruce said the tournament had attracted players from as far away as Christchurch, Timaru and Temuka, and there was no specific women’s grade, with any women who entered mixed into the main draws.

The next tournament on the

Midlands circuit will be Geraldine on May 10 and 11, while the next Mid Canterbury club to play host will be Celtic on May 17 and 18.

The Methven Squash Club’s tournament will take place on June 7 and 8, followed by Rakaia’s on June 14 and 15, and Collegiate on July 5 and 6.

The Ashburton Open will take place on August 2 and 3, while the Timaru Squash Club will host the Midlands Open from July 1921.

Roar team playing for AL future – Davies AAP It was billed as retiring Brisbane Roar great Matt McKay’s swansong.

But interim coach Darren Davies has warned today’s A-League clash with Adelaide United will mark the last Roar game for “a number of players” ahead of Robbie Fowler’s expected off-season cleanout.

Davies hoped his 13 off-contract players could embrace a golden chance to secure their future by giving a rousing send-off

for McKay in front of incoming coach Fowler.

Liverpool legend Fowler does not officially take over until Roar’s disastrous 2018-19 campaign is over. However, he will attend the Suncorp Stadium clash just days after being confirmed as the Roar’s full-time coach.

Fowler met players for a chat at training on Wednesday but is expected to be more ruthless when he runs the rule over the squad after Brisbane runs out against the finals-bound Reds.

“There are a number of boys

who will be playing their last game for the club, that’s the nature of football,” said Davies, who will remain as Fowler’s assistant.

“But the opportunity is there (on Thursday), the boss is here.

“It’s a last opportunity to go out and make an impression.”

While the axe may be hovering over players, Davies said Fowler’s appointment had brought some relief after months of speculation since John Aloisi’s resignation.

“It’s a real positive, fantastic news. Now we can start to plan forward and getting back to

where we should be,” Davies said.

McKay’s 271-game career will be honoured with a tribute at the season finale, along with veteran attacker Henrique – who announced an end to his playing days with Brisbane earlier this week.

Three-time championship winner Henrique has already played his last game for Brisbane due to a groin injury.

The Roar will also be out to bounce back from their club record 6-1 last-up loss to Newcastle Jets.

‘Broken blokes’ nab national title

They call themselves a bunch of broken blokes, but the Canterbury Country men’s 50-55 age group tennis team proved to be the country’s best over the weekend.

Captained by Ashburton’s Peter Leonard, the team headed to Christchurch for a shot at the Tennis New Zealand Teams’ Championship title and blew even their own expectations out of the water.

The team included fellow Mid Cantabrians Andre van Rooyen and Tony Brosnahan, along with Ellesmere’s John Honeywell, North Canterbury’s Wayne Thompson and Malvern’s Peter Fitzgerald, and they thought they might be capable of finishing third or maybe even second, but they never dreamed they could win it.

They did though, beating Waikato, Canterbury, Kapi Mana (Wellington), Taranaki/Kapi Mana and a combined Canterbury/Canterbury Country team before going on to beat Auckland in the final.

“The team’s made up of a bunch of broken guys, and we managed to beat the unbroken ones,” Leonard said.

The final was tense, with Auckland holding a five-point lead heading into it, Leonard said.

The tournament ran from Friday through to Sunday and the scoring system saw teams pick up two points for every set they won, and four bonus points for winning overall. Ties were timed to three hours, and if a set wasn’t finished when time was up then that set’s points were shared, meaning it was vital to get in front early.

Leonard said it was a huge effort and accomplishment, and for most of the team members it was their first national title – including Leonard.

“It means a lot really. It’s something that we were really looking forward to and have been trying to win for a while,” Leonard said.

When the event was last in Christchurch the Canterbury Country men finished fourth.

Next year the teams event would move to Napier and Leonard said he believed all team

members would still be eligible for the age group so it was hoped they could again come together and head north to defend their title.

A Canterbury Country women’s team featuring Ashburton’s Dianna Leonard, Jane Brosnahan and Karen Tait was also in action at the teams event and they finished

third in the 50-55 age group, while two other Mid Cantabrians – Phil Crozier and Robbie Bennett – played in the over 60s age group.

The tournament was hosted by clubs around Christchurch, with the winning Canterbury Country men playing at Waimari on day one and moving to Cashmere for days two and three.

OKC crash out after miracle buzzer-beater AP Damian Lillard hit a 37-footer at the buzzer and finished with career playoff-high 50 points to help the Portland Trail Blazers eliminate the Oklahoma City Thunder from the playoffs in five games with a 118-115 victory on Tuesday night.

With the game tied, Lillard dribbled just inside of halfcourt near the Blazers logo and then pulled up and hit the game-winner.

Lillard waved goodbye to the Thunder bench after nailing the shot, then was promptly mobbed by his teammates. As the Thunder left the floor, Lillard circled the court, high-fiving fans.

The crowd chanted “MVP! MVP!” Lillard had 10 3-pointers, break-

ing the franchise record.

Portland advances to the Western Conference semi-finals to face the winner of the series between the Nuggets and San Antonio.

Denver won 108-90 earlier in the night to take a 3-2 lead in that series.

It was the 12th straight road playoff loss for the Thunder, who have been eliminated in the opening round for three straight seasons.

Russell Westbrook had 29 points, 11 rebounds and 14 assists for his 10th career playoff triple-double and his second of the series. Paul George added 36 points.

Lillard had 34 points in the first half alone – more than Westbrook and George had combined (32) for the Thunder – but the Blazers had just a 61-60 edge going into

the second half. The Thunder led 90-88 going into the final quarter.

Westbrook hit a 3-pointer to extend the lead while Lillard took a break on the bench.

Oklahoma City went up 105-90 with 7:45 left on Dennis Schroder’s pullup jumper as Portland struggled.

Lillard’s 3-pointer pulled the Blazers within 108-103, but Westbrook answered with his own 3-pointer. CJ McCollum’s bank shot cut Oklahoma City’s lead to 113-109 with 1:39 left. Maurice Harkless added free throws to get the Blazers within two.

McCollum tied it with a jumper with just under a minute left, but George scored on the other end.

Lillard’s layup re-tied it before he hit his epic 3-pointer.

McCollum finished with 17 for

the Blazers and Enes Kanter had 13 points and 13 rebounds.

The Blazers stole one in Oklahoma City, winning 111-98 on Sunday. Westbrook went cold, finishing was 5 of 21 from the field for 14 points. He missed his final 10 shots. Lillard finished with 24, including 15 in the third quarter.

Portland was swept in the first round of the playoffs for the past two seasons, last year by New Orleans and the previous year by Golden State.

The Blazers last trip to the Western Conference semi-finals came in 2016, when they beat the Clippers in the opening round before falling to the Warriors in five games.

The Thunder also got knocked out in the opening round for the past two seasons. In 2016, a year

after missing the playoffs entirely, they went to the conference finals but lost to Golden State.

Thunder: OKC coach Billy Donovan knew before the game what the Thunder were up against: “You throw everything you have into this game. It’s a matter of collectively going out there to play to the best of their ability.”

Trail Blazers: McCollum had scored at least 20 points in each of his last seven playoff games. ...

Clough eyes Spain gold

After returning from the 2018 World Multisport Championships with two silver medals around his neck, Matthew Clough is aiming to go one better in 2019, twice.

Clough headed to Spain earlier this week to get ready to race in the event’s aquathlon on April 30 and cross triathlon on May 2, and with it being the final year the 18-year-old is eligible to race as an under-20, he’s got high hopes.

Finishing second in both last year means he’s motivated and driven to go for gold this year, although he knows that anything can happen come race day.

“It all comes down to that one day and that one race,” Clough said.

“Everyone over there wants to win, it’s just a matter of who wants it more on the day.”

And Clough knows what he’s talking about. It’s the fourth time he’s boarded a plane bound for the World Multisport Championships, but his build-up to the 2019 event has been a lot different to any of the others.

He’s no longer living at home with mum and dad in Ashburton. Having finished his schooling at Ashburton College at the end of last year, Clough now resides in Dunedin where he’s studying towards a B.Com. It’s a three year degree, but he’s hoping to add further study on to the end of it.

Balancing study and classes with training and student life isn’t easy, but Clough quickly found his groove and has been enjoying getting out and about on both bike and foot in a much different training environment than what he’d grown up with.

“I’m missing out on student life a bit, but I don’t mind with the bigger picture in mind,” Clough said.

He knows how important his study is and with that in mind, said the races in Spain will be his last for the year.

For the rest of 2019 he wants to focus on his studies, but will keep up his training because he’s planning on starting 2020 with his second shot at the Coast to Coast.

Clough first tackled the Coast to Coast two-day event in 2018 and was the first schoolboy home, and second overall, and it’s the two-day event he’s eyeing up again in 2020.

That’s a few months off yet though, and for now his sights are firmly set where they should be – on the job at hand in Spain.

An aquathlon consists of a 1km swim followed by a 5km run, while the cross triathlon is effectively an offroad triathlon made up of a 1km swim, a 30km bike ride and an 8km off-road run.

The main difference racing in Spain offered was that the swim leg will take place in a river, where the water temperature is currently around 15 degrees Celsius, Clough said.

Racing will take place in the north-west of Spain, near Portugal, in Pontevedra, and although it’s a long way from home there will be plenty of people cheering Clough on from the sidelines.

He has his parents, his sisters, and his grandparents in Spain to support him in what could be his final shot at the world multisport championship title.

Clough said he has no idea what the future holds for him. He’s a multisporter who’s tried a few different racing formats over the years – earlier this month he raced in the New Zealand Xterra Championships in Rotorua where he came third.

Whether it’s triathlons, aquathlons, cross tris, ironmans or longer endurance events like the Coast to Coast, Clough doesn’t know which path his future will take. He said he likes trying new things, so where his name will pop up in years to come is anyone’s guess.
