Flexible safety barriers to help prevent people dying or being seriously injured in a crash and rumble strips to give drivers a wake-up call if they stray across the line are amongst improvements people would like to see on State Highway 1 through Mid Canterbury.

The NZ Transport Agency has been looking at ways to make a stretch of the highway, from just north of the Selwyn River Bridge to Racecourse Road, north of Ashburton, safer.

Between 2007 and 2016, 13 people were killed and 49 were seriously injured

on this stretch of road. Many of these crashes involved drivers running off the road and hitting something like a pole or tree. There have also been head-on crashes on the highway.

Transport Agency System Manager Pete Connors says the team held a series of community events in Ashburton, Rakaia and Dunsandel in December to share their ideas and find out more from people who use the road. They also invited feedback online and by mail.

“We asked people what makes this road feel unsafe and what worries them

the most,” he says.

“About 80 people came to speak to us at the events.

“We also received 113 feedback forms and a number of letters, emails and phone calls.

“Since then, we’ve continued to have constructive conversations with people in the community and commuters about making the road safer.”

Theft charge decision waiting on photographs An Ashburton judge has adjourned a defended case of caravan theft so information can be mined from photographs to help find the truth of the matter.

Harry James Mitchell, 44, was appearing in the Ashburton District Court yesterday on two charges of intentionally damaging a caravan owned by Russell Kennelly and one of stealing the $6700 vehicle. He had pleaded not guilty.

The prosecution alleges Mitchell sold the caravan to Kennelly, who runs a caravan buy-sell-rent business in Christchurch, and that he then rented it for several months before removing wheel clamps and shifting the vehicle without permission.

Police eventually found a caravan on Eton Street a few months later and Kennelly identified it as his stolen rental. It had a different number plate and had been painted in places.

Kennelly, who owns Habitat Caravans, said he was phoned last year by Mitchell who wanted to sell a caravan and he paid $1000 in cash when he went to check out the vehicle in May and $5700 by bank transfer as the result of a verbal agreement to buy.

Mitchell then rented the caravan, which Kennelly later moved from Glentunnel to Rakaia for him. He reported it stolen from Rakaia on November 1, two weeks after Mitchell stopped paying rent.

He said he was in no doubt the caravan found by police on

Eton Street was the same Panorama caravan he bought from Mitchell in May. He said he took photographs at the time of purchase that would prove it but had not brought them to court as he didn’t know they would be needed.

Mitchell’s lawyer Kathy Besire said there was no written evidence of the caravan sale and her client would say Kennelly had loaned him $5700 and the caravan was collateral in the event he stopped repaying the debt at $100 a week.

He alleges Kennelly caused $3200 damage when he moved the caravan, their relationship soured and the weekly repayments stopped.

She said it was also her client’s assertion that the caravan found at Eton Street was not the one Kennelly claimed he bought.

Judge Gary MacAskill stopped the hearing while Kennelly was giving evidence, saying it was clear the witness had been taken by surprise by Mitchell’s allegations.

He said data that could be found on photographs taken when the complainant and defendant first met last May could help decide who was telling the truth and the prosecution should be given a chance to find and produce them.

He adjourned the hearing to May 28, when a date will be set for the hearing to conclude. The prosecution will call the police officer in charge of the case and Mitchell will also give evidence.

Cracking down on seatbelt use

Police and the NZTA are zeroing in on the small group of Kiwis that don’t wear seatbelts, and urging them to buckle up.

A new research report from the Automobile Association (AA) has used police crash data to identify groups of people who aren’t wearing seatbelts, and the organisations say they will now be working to “change their mindset”.

In New Zealand, the AA found that seatbelt wearing rates are high, yet non-seatbelt fatalities accounted for 19 to 30 per cent of overall motor vehicle occupant road deaths between 2006 and 2016.

Non-seatbelt use was found to be higher among males than females, and more common in age groups between 15 to 25. The highest rate of non-seatbelt fatalities occurred on rural roads.

“For most people it’s a habitual thing; you get into your car and you put on your seatbelt. But

unfortunately, for a small group of people, this is not the case,” National Road Policing Manager Steve Greally said.

“Police provided data for this research because it helps us figure out who is in this small group of people. The next step is how to reach them.”

Earlier this year, newly appointed Ashburton Police Senior Sergeant Phil Dean said seatbelts and restraints will be one of the “big four” things Ashburton Police will focus on to improve road safety, alongside alcohol and distractions.

NZTA, who have recently undertaken a major seatbelt advertising campaign, also welcomed the research.

Safety and Environment Director Harry Wilson said “seatbelts save lives, it’s that simple”.

“In a safe system, no-one deserves to be killed or seriously injured because someone has made a mistake, but people also need to take responsibility for making good choices, including

using proven life-saving features like seatbelts.

“If you make a mistake on the road – or if someone else does – the simple, inescapable fact is that you are much more likely to be seriously injured or killed if you’re not wearing a seatbelt,” he said.

“Seatbelts support and protect you if you’re in a crash or when your vehicle stops suddenly. The force on safety belts can be as much as 20 times your weight – this is how hard you’d hit the inside of your vehicle without a seatbelt on.

“We’re looking forward to using this new research and working together and with our partner agencies on what we can do to reach the people who choose not to wear a seatbelt, to change their minds and create a new habit – buckling up every time they get in the car.”

There have been 127 deaths on New Zealand roads this year – 16 more than the same time last year.

Local plaques vie for award A Mid Canterbury-born project to highlight our historic places using bright blue heritage plaques is a finalist in the 2018 Canterbury heritage awards.

The iconic Ashburton railway footbridge turned 100 years last November and was the first structure to be adorned by Historic Places Mid Canterbury with a special commemorative blue plaque.

The group plans to put blue plaques at all Ashburton’s heritage hotspots. The idea was inspired by a similar scheme in London.

The blue plaques give a short history of the historic building, informing locals and visitors about its particular historical significance.

The idea aimed to increase the prominence of Ashburton’s historic buildings, encourage awareness of local history and support the retention of our existing heritage assets.

It is hoped the plaques could be rolled out nationwide and become instantly recognisable symbols of our heritage.

More than 70 entries were received for the biennial heritage awards, with finalists being announced at a special ceremony on June 15. The finalists are dispersed throughout Canterbury and range from a small tunnellers’ cottage in Arthur’s Pass to larger domestic

and commercial heritage throughout Canterbury.

Dr Anna Crighton, chair of the Christchurch Heritage Awards Charitable Trust, said a remarkable variety of projects were presented.

“We can’t recreate in a few years what took over a century and a half to build. Thus, with the impact of the earthquakes resting heavily on our built heritage, the importance of what remains is all the more significant; a consideration which has evidently been respected by so many.

“There was no dispute that every entry championed heritage well and we should be proud of those taking the time to continue respecting rescuing and restoration in this way and contributing to futureproofing our culture for many years to come.”

The entry categories allow for a wide diversity in the entries and provide a great opportunity to acknowledge many styles and types of built heritage. With a judging panel well-versed in heritage conservation and architecture, informed discussion was held to decide the finalists for the six categories.

Other finalists in the Outstanding Contribution to Heritage category are the Lyttelton Redux Project and a Christchurch City Council future of heritage project.

How do we stop deaths on State Highway One? From P1 “People have told us the high traffic volumes made them feel unsafe and some felt nervous turning on to or off the State Highway. They also feel unsafe walking and driving across the highway at Rakaia and Dunsandel, and many were worried about drivers crossing the centreline.”

Three-quarters of people who responded support the installation of flexible safety barriers or wide centrelines to reduce headon crashes. They also like the idea of more rumble strips and wide sealed shoulders to create room to recover if drivers drift out of their lane or lose control.

Respondents also supported a review of speed limits through

Rakaia, Dunsandel and across the Rakaia Bridge. Connors said feedback from people who know the road well is really important.

They also said parking around the Mobil Service Station in Rakaia and food outlets in Dunsandel made visibility difficult for local traffic. Turning onto and off the highway in general made some feel unsafe, especially at

Dromore intersections.

Other respondents wanted a new or wider bridge at Rakaia, four-lanes from Rolleston to Ashburton and more spaces for passing.

Almost 40 per cent of people who responded online travel the highway for work and around 20 per cent to visit friends and family.

“We use this information alongside our research to make sure that the safety improvements respond to the needs of the community using the road every day,” Connors said.

The project team will finalise the design of the safety improvements for this road and share them with the community later this year.

Generous to his core When the Ashburton Fire Museum looked to acquire a classic fire appliance to be the organisation’s workhorse machine, taking the heat off its own prized local collection, local man Dennis Dixon immediately offered to purchase it outright, and donate it to the project.

But his generosity didn’t stop there.

A driver for Wilsons Bulk Transport by day, he persuaded his boss to cut him a good deal and borrowed the company’s transporter so he could collect and bring home the old fire engine from the Bluebridge, Picton ferry.

Dixon first put his hand up to help the museum when he heard it was raising money to assist the project’s fitout. Since then, he’s become hands-on, joining the team to assist however he can.

Museum chairman, David Eddington, says Dennis is a real find for the organisation and shows how anyone, even without a background in the fire service, can become involved and assist the fire museum in its objective to build the best museum display of any individual fire brigade in

the country. The old machine is a 1972 International C1800 which was coach-built in New Zealand to a late 1960’s design on International running gear.

As the museum’s “runner” it will see itself immersed in a variety of operations including photo opportunities, public relations duties, conveying fire-fighters’ daughters to the school ball and a myriad of educational and fun activities.

“I just want to see kids enjoy it, maybe spray a bit of water around for them when the occasion warrants it and put something back into the community.

“I love trucks, didn’t necessarily want a vintage one of my own, but this really suits me. I’m really pleased to help the museum out,” Dixon said.

The old fire engine saw service primarily in the Nelson area, but has an Ashburton District connection, having been stationed at Mayfield until a few years ago.

It was acquired by a private collector in Wellington who is now dissolving his large collection.

The move back to its new permanent home was completed over the weekend.

Temporary reprieve Activist Penny Bright has won a temporary reprieve to stop the sale of her Kingsland home over unpaid rates. The High Court at Auckland has given Bright until Friday to file an affidavit as part of an application for a judicial review to stop Auckland Council selling her home. Tenders for the house sale closed at 4pm yesterday.

A fire has destroyed a Taupo home with one person taken to hospital.

The Hinemoa Avenue house was fully involved when fire service crews arrived at the address after being called at 9.16pm on Tuesday.

New Zealand Fire Service northern communications shift manager Colin Underdown said the fire was out by 10pm and then crews spent the next two hours dampening down hot spots. One person was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation. Taupo police Senior Sergeant Phil Edwards said police were called to help at the fire.

Committee takes fresh interest in creek

The Ashburton Water Zone Committee is set to take a renewed interest in Carters Creek.

Zone facilitator Dave Moore told yesterday’s committee meeting in Ashburton that the creek, which has a catchment upstream from Tinwald and discharges into Lake Hood, had

been a concern for some time due to flooding issues above Tinwald, rubbish in it and poor water quality.

“So we’re looking to restore it as a project.”

ECan recently cleared willows above Lake Hood, removed a substantial amount of rubbish from the creek and undertook chemical weed con-

trol, with a long-term goal of making it easier to maintain. A new rubbish trap has also been installed in the west side of Tinwald.

Moore said E.coli levels going into Lake Hood were high and ECan is investigating using faecal source tracking over coming months to find the cause or causes of that.

He said once more solid information was available he would come back to the committee with progress and options for improving water quality in the creek.

He said committee members could expect the creek to regularly appear in the agenda for future zone committee meetings.

An overhaul of New Zealand’s welfare system is imminent, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says, including removal of its most punitive sanctions. Ardern said a “culture change” was needed at the Social Development Ministry so that the people at the centre of the system were treated with respect.

She made the comments in response to the most recent controversy over the treatment of a beneficiary. It was reported yesterday that a solo mother-ofthree in South Auckland was told by her Work and Income case manager that her benefit was cut because she had been on two Tinder dates.

Native trees get a helping hand

It wasn’t only local people who benefited from this year’s Student Volunteer Week – native trees in the Rakaia Gorge received a helping hand too.

Student volunteers from around the district bussed to the gorge last Thursday for a day pulling out young sycamore trees, which are a threat to native vegetation.

The organisation which the group were helping asked not to be named, but the efforts of the young volunteers were a valuable contribution to a wider conservation and recreation project being worked on in the area, Mid Canterbury Student Volunteer Week co-ordinator Dellwyn Moylan said.

“The students worked really hard removing the sycamore trees and made a difference in the area they worked.

Young people care about their community and the environment, so the students were keen and enthusiastic to volunteer with a project

involving the environment,” she said. Volunteers learnt that the Rakaia Gorge is home to many plant species like kowhai, cabbage tree, coprosmas, native vines “as well as some more unusual plants”, but sycamores have become a weed problem in a number of areas around the foothills where they are invading native forest.

They normally escape from old homestead gardens and, as they have winged seeds, can spread a long way.

“The gorge has been identified as an area of significant biodiversity and landscape values [but] if the sycamores were left they would shade out the young native plants and the native forest would disappear,” Moylan said.

It was the first time Cactus Mid Canterbury and Base Youth members had jumped on board the national Student Volunteer Week.

Students also helped tidy toys at Plunket, clean up the Ashburton Skate Park and wash people’s cars during the week.

Volunteers like Sophie, Rebekah, Will, Brooklyn, Jenny, Zoe and Tarquin helped with the removal of sycamore trees from the Rakaia Gorge last week.

Murray axed from beer campaign Rowing great Eric Murray has been removed from parts of a beer campaign after a watchdog ruled he was “a hero of the young”.

The former Olympics gold medallist was part of a campaign called Beer the Beautiful Truth that featured a number of New Zealand celebrities talking about the nutritional content in beer.

Alcohol Healthwatch laid the complaint with Advertising Standards Authority expressing concern that Murray was a hero to young people and was effectively being used to encourage minors to drink alcohol.

In a just-released decision the authority partially upheld the complaint.

Alcohol Healthwatch had raised concerns that by showing Murray consuming alcohol to celebrate the birth of his child, it implied the success of a social occasion was dependent on alcohol.

The Advertising Standards Authority Complaints Board agreed that Murray was a hero of the young and the Brewers Association has subsequently taken steps to address the concerns.

“We have already taken steps to ensure that any campaign material featuring Eric has been removed from unrestricted areas.”

“New Zealanders should not feel assured that the alcohol industry is protecting our young people from the harm of alcohol advertising,” she said.

Brewers Association shut down the complainants that said references to “nutrition” and being “99 per cent sugar-free” were misleading.

“Complainants had claimed that the campaign created the impression that beer was healthy and nutritious, an assertion which was not upheld by the authority,” the association said.

The Complaints Board said the video advertisement of Murray talking about having “the best beer of his life” after attending the birth of his child did not imply alcohol was a key part of the success of the occasion The Complaints Board ruled, due to the use of Murray, a hero of the young, in non-restricted advertising mediums for the promotion of alcohol products, the complaints were upheld, in part.

Onesies, PJs ban: cinema’s dress code goes global A Kiwi cinema has sparked online debate and international news headlines thanks to its new dress code.

Taranaki’s Hawera Cinemas recently imposed a ban on wearing pyjamas and onesies to the movies after noticing an “increasing trend” of film lovers turning up in their PJs. It announced the new dress code in a Facebook post at the weekend, saying: “Just a friendly reminder that we have a dress code at Hawera Cinemas, it’s simple really, as long as you are appropriately dressed and are wearing clean footwear you are good to go.

“Please no pyjamas, onesies, dressing gowns or dirty gumboots – no matter how cute they are!”

The cinema has warned that it will refuse entry to patrons who try to ignore the dress code.

In a response to one online comment, it added: “It is not the vibe or environment we want to encourage here at Hawera Cinemas”.

It seemed a majority of online comments were in favour of the dress code, saying it should be common sense.

“What happened to wearing clean tidy clothes for an evening out? PJs are bedwear only and gumboots are for farm wear,” one commenter wrote.

Another added: “There is only one place

to wear your PJs or jim jams, slippers and dressing gown and that is in your own home or garden, and certainly not after a certain time in the morning! It is just slovenly to wear these garments outside.”

However others said it was “stupid” to tell people what they could and couldn’t wear to the movies.

One person wrote: “What kind of unbalanced person is upset by what someone chooses to wear?! So let’s just ban that form of expression and give everyone the same white cinema shirt at the door. Honestly, people get upset by seeing someone in pj’s!? Not indoors!? ... We now have a dress code to sit comfortably in DARKNESS and watch a film. Ludicrous.”

And another pointed out the cinema may risk losing customers, pointing out: “In an age where Netflix and On Demand services are taking over the film industry I don’t think it’s wise to define how people like to enjoy movies. By enforcing a dumb rule that doesn’t affect anyone else will just motivate people to stay home where they can comfortably enjoy a movie how they want.”

However, the cinema told RNZ it had not received any official complaints over the policy.

Hawera Cinemas posted on Facebook to thank everyone for their support and “hundreds of positive comments”.

Chch stadium decision this week The Government is set to make an announcement on Christchurch’s new stadium this week.

A stadium is among the city’s rebuild projects and officials have been debating about how many seats it should have, whether it should be covered, and if it will be for sports only or a multi-use arena.

There is also the question of who will pay for it. A feasibility study has recommended a 25,000-seat stadium with a retractable roof and playing field, at a cost of nearly $500 million.

The city council has already committed $250 million and bought three blocks of land for its construction. Labour has committed $300m to all of the rebuild projects, but is leaving it up to the council to decide how that money is spent.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said yesterday that at least some of that money will be in the Budget next month.

She did not express a view on whether the stadium would be solely for sports or a multi-use entertainment arena.

“That’s some of the debate for us. It’s about saying here’s the funding available, council you tell us what you and the people of Canterbury want,” she told NewstalkZB. “Having the likes of council then make a pitch around things like the horizontal infrastructure they need, the East Frame [housing project], the stadium, but knowing they would then have that pot of money that they would then be able to access.”

What are the odds?

T

he thrill of a good bet can be too alluring for many these days – and the options available to someone wanting to have a flutter is quite incredible.

From sporting games to election results, most bookmakers around the world will offer an opportunity for someone to have a wager on anything they like – provided they stump up the cash.

There are some fantastic stories from around the world about the success and failure of such investments.

There’s a well-known tale of a Welsh grandfather investing £50 on his then 18-month-old grandson playing for the Wales national side in the future and when he debuted at just 16,

that £50 investment was turned into £125,000. Most of the more intriguing tales seem to centre around English-based bookmakers.

In April of 1964 a £10 bet was placed at odds of 1000-1 that man would walk on any planet or heavenly body before January 1970.

Neil Armstrong obliged in 1969 and bookmaker, William Hill, had to pay out £10,000.

Elvis was a popular bet for

many, and still is to this day – largely around his supposed comeback.

He also featured in a remarkable bet placed with William Hill at odds of 20,000,000-1 in which Elvis would crash a UFO into the Loch Ness, striking the legendary monster who is supposed to hide within its depths. We are not kidding, someone did actually make that bet.

In 1988, Chris Bonnington, the famous mountaineer, bet with William Hill that he would return from his Himalayan expedition with proof that the Yeti existed.

Upon his return, he claimed he had the required evidence, until the Department of Agriculture confiscated and burned it.

In 1995, John Richardson, then aged 55, struck a novelty bet with

William Hill that he would father a child in the year 2040.

Now, in the wake of the arrival of another royal baby, bookmakers are being flooded with investments as to what the third child of William and Kate will be named after he was born yesterday morning.

At this stage Arthur is 5/1 and leading all investments after some sneaky inside information was leaked to certain media from an apparent “royal source’’ last week. Arthur is followed by 8-1 for James, 10-1 for Albert and 16-1 for both Frederick and Philip.

Surprisingly, these bookmakers have good form for predicting the royal baby names.

In 2013 the leading name was George with many of the major

players and then in 2015 Charlotte was the second favourite name with punters at 3-1.

New Zealanders may get a shot at a novelty bet in the coming months with the arrival of our Prime Minister’s first child.

As close to royalty as we get, don’t be surprised if the TAB opens up a market on what Jacinda and Clarke may decided to name their child when it arrives later in the year.

While we may have selected the Melbourne Cup winner late last year in this column, we’re not quite so confident with this option.

One thing we can be reasonably certain of though is that should their child be a boy, the names John and Bill are unlikely to be in contention.

he premise of a deep, dark secret often conjures mental imagery of dark alleyways, discretion, pain and pleasure. But delve into mine and you’ll get rather a different scenario.

Think bright fluorescent lights, bustling spaces and Dave Dobbyn tunes playing softly in the background.

Ladies and gentlemen, today I’m laying it all bare and going public with one of my less proud moments in life. I’m taking you to a time before my journalism days, when I attempted to cultivate a distinctly different career.

I worked in a role sometimes granted the sophisticated title of “brand ambassador”… but more commonly identified as “that supermarket free sample person”.

Indeed – prior to landing in my office chair at the Guardian – I dedicated many an hour to wedging myself in the way of Aucklanders’ trolleys, gazing at white linoleum floors, handing out meagre samples or routinely crawling on those white linoleum floors picking up said Aucklanders’ discarded toothpicks.

Equipped with an oversized bib, an alluring hairnet and an extremely strained smile, you could catch me trying to seduce passers-by with hurriedly defrosted burger patties or several lukewarm millilitres of a new RTD beverage.

Yet drab as it may sound, I am now quietly grateful for what those hours taught me. I

First and foremost those interactions proved a fulfilling time for my vernacular.

Nothing increases your vocabulary faster than in-depth interrogation about the flavour of a tomato sauce by those uncertain whether to try it. Have you ever tried to pique interest with weak words like tasty?

Try chucking in mysterious descriptors like “possesses aromatic, peachy characteristics”, (recited off a nearby wine bottle) and observe as your client’s curiosity piques and wham, bam – the sample goes down the hatch.

Secondly, offering alcohol samples seemed like fun and games until I landed in between two chillers with naught but a branded singlet to wear

(exposed female skin is OBVIOUSLY a prerequisite to successful product sales in the 21st century).

However, as the hours passed, the blood circulation in my hands slowed to a crawl and the goose bumps peaked, refuge was just around the corner in the delicatessen chicken warmer.

During those cold, bleak times I learnt that happiness truly lies in the simple things in life, like cosying up to some heated roast poultry.

No … I can’t really justify it as relevant to journalism life today – but if I hadn’t had that early induction to the bitter Canterbury winter, I’m sure my workmates may have succumbed to a great deal more JAFA whinging.

Finally I discovered, to great amusement, that aversion tactics have no limit.

That ad where the guy dresses up in various disguises to get

multiple free samples is nought but propaganda, and a better representation of Kiwis would show how awkward, closedoff or downright petrified free samples seem to make many of them.

It’s bizarre. But if you’ve ever attempted to avoid an ex or someone whose name you can’t remember within the narrow confines of a supermarket aisle, you can probably imagine how things panned out for me and my target customers.

Oh yes, I hunted them down, and I used my vernacular finesse to get my samples consumed, and my products sold (or so I thought, until I encountered the stash around the corner from me. Awkwardness reinforced).

Unfortunately, a great deal of journalism takes place outside of the supermarket so interviewees have a lot further to run – but I try.

YOUR VIEW Road funding Jacob Gould recently wrote to you in response to our local Labour List Member of Parliament Jo Luxton’s column about our Government’s plans to increase funding for regional roads by 98 per cent.

Mr Gould claimed Jo Luxton’s statement the Labour Government was intending to invest $6.1 billion in our roads was untrue.

However, it appears Jo and Mr Gould are both wrong.

The previous National-led coalition Government ignored our regional transport issues, reducing the contribution made from the Land Transport Fund to our local roading in favour of Auckland’s so-called roads of national significance.

The effect of transport on our environment, making sure Kiwis

have access to transport options so their jobs, educational opportunities and standard of living are not hindered, and investing in railway passenger and freight transport to support our growing economy, while ensuring value for money and peace of mind to Kiwi taxpayers and our families, are all clearly stated in the draft plan.

The third chapter of the sizea-

ble text explains the Government intends to respond to the investment of $1.5 billion from Local Government with contributions that are projected to grow from $3.7 billion to $4.7 billion dollars. $1.5 billion + $4.7 billon = $6.2 billion total investment.

Jo Luxton said it was $6.1 billion, but it is $6.2 billion.

The Rock gets a baby Kate Middleton wasn’t the only one to welcome a baby to the world yesterday – Dwayne Johnson has welcomed his third child. The 45-year-old actor and his girlfriend Lauren Hashian have become parents to their second daughter, whom they have named Tiana Gia Johnson, the star revealed in an Instagram post of himself with the tot. Johnson already has a two-year-old daughter Jasmine with Lauren, as well as 16-year-old daughter Simone, whom he has with ex-wife Dany Garcia.

It’s a (royal) boy Third time’s a charm.

The Duchess of Cambridge gave birth yesterday morning to a new prince who is fifth in line to the British throne – and she was home by suppertime.

The duchess and husband Prince William drove to St. Mary’s Hospital in London early in the morning, and Kate’s 8 pound, 7 ounce (3.8 kilogram) boy was born at 11.01am, with royal officials announcing the birth about two hours later.

There followed a smoothly choreographed operation perfected after the births of the couple’s two other children.

In late afternoon, elder siblings Prince George and Princess Charlotte were brought to meet their baby brother.

Around 6pm, Kate emerged alongside her husband, wearing a vibrant red dress and holding the tiny royal highness wrapped in a white lace shawl.

After posing for dozens of photographers and camera crews outside the hospital’s private Lindo Wing, the trio headed home, with the baby nestled securely in a car seat.

Television news helicopters followed the royal Range Rover as it made the 1.6 kilometre journey to the family’s Kensington Palace residence.

William declared the couple “very delighted” with the new addition to the family.

The royal palace said “the queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news”.

Prime Minister Theresa May offered “warmest congratulations”.

News of the royal birth came with a mix of tradition and modernity typical of Britain’s media-savvy royal family.

It was announced on Twitter and also proclaimed in the forecourt of Bucking-

ham Palace with a framed notice perched on a golden easel. Tony Appleton, a town crier from southeast England, showed up in full regalia to declare the newborn prince’s birth outside the hospital.

The words “It’s a boy” flashed in lights around the top of London’s BT Tower, which can be seen for miles around.

More ceremonial celebrations will come today, including the pealing of bells at Westminster Abbey and a gun salute in London’s Hyde Park.

The baby is a younger brother to 4-yearold Prince George and Princess Charlotte, who turns 3 next week.

Both were born at the same hospital, as were William and his younger brother, Prince Harry.

The infant’s name, which has been subject to a flurry of bets, is likely to be announced in the next few days.

Arthur and James are among bookmakers’ favourites for the new prince, whose full title will be His Royal Highness, Prince (Name) of Cambridge.

“You’ll find out soon enough,” William said when asked about the baby’s name.

The new arrival is Queen Elizabeth II’s sixth great-grandchild and bumps Prince Harry to sixth place in the line of succession.

The baby is fifth in line, after grandfather Prince Charles, father Prince William and his two siblings.

Charlotte is the first royal daughter to stay ahead of a younger brother in the line of succession.

Before the rules were changed in 2012, male heirs took precedence.

Kensington Palace announced in September that Kate was pregnant with her third child.

As in her previous pregnancies, the duchess suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum, a severe form of morning sickness.

Avatar the new Godfather Avatar director James Cameron said he still aims to make four sequels to the 2009 science-fiction blockbuster, likening the series to The Godfather. Cameron also said he hoped “Avenger fatigue” would set in after the next instalment of the superhero franchise, saying there are “other stories to tell”. Cameron said he was about 100 days into filming the second and third Avatar instalments under a deal with Fox. If those are successful, he plans to continue with the fourth and fifth movies, which he already has written. “I’m personally committed to all of them,” he said at the Manhattan Beach studio where the sequels are being made.

The first DWTS feud?

A war of words between two Dancing With the Stars contestants has hinted at growing rivalries ahead of Sunday’s debut. Some of the newest recruits to the reality show battled it out in the Family Feud arena this week. It was all fun and games until politician David Seymour lay down a sweet burn on Shortland Street actress Shavaughan Ruakere.

Host Dai Henwood asked the teams to answer this question: “How can you tell if someone has two left feet?” Ruakere answered cheekily: “If your name is David Seymour.” David, who was on the opposing team, replied: “The really good take out of that is that Shav is thinking.”

Avanti founders cut business ties

Reports of the early days of the company talk of Struthers tinkering in an old warehouse that used to be a picture theatre in Auck-

land’s Ponsonby, with import restrictions at the time forcing the firm to make everything themselves, including the frame and the handlebars.

Protective padding on the BMX bikes was moulded into shape by the Struthers children and their friends using the the family oven, which meant dinner was often late.

The company went on to man-

ufacture 10-speed road bikes and the Avanti brand, Italian for ‘moving forward’, was born in 1985.

When steel frames were replaced by alloy and later carbon, manufacturing moved overseas to China.

The tie-up with Scott started in 2010 after Avanti’s previous relationship with bike brand Specialized dissolved, with Scott stepping into the breach.

Google CEO set for massive payout Google’s Chief Executive Officer is about to receive $US380 million ($531.3m).

In 2014, Sundar Pichai, 45, received an award of restricted shares in the company as part of a promotion.

The 353,939 shares worth around $US380m vest on April 25, according to the Daily Mail.

This makes it one of the largest single payouts to a public company executive in recent years, according to Bloomberg.

Pichai joined Google in 2004, where he led the product management and innovation efforts for a suite of Google’s client software products, including Google Chrome and Chrome OS. Pichai allegedly received the shares before his promotion to

Sundar Pichai senior vice-president of products a year earlier, when he took over many of co-founder Larry

Page’s responsibilities.

The award increased in value as Alphabet’s stock surged 90 per cent since the grant date.

Google has consistently paid Pichai more than $US100m in total compensation per year since 2014.

The company has yet to disclose Pichai’s compensation for 2017.

Pichai is married to Anjali Pichai and they have two children together.

Pichai worked in engineering and product management at Applied Materials and in management consulting at McKinsey & Company.

He attended the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 2002.

Stuff to close five community papers and cut 14 jobs Five more titles have been added to the list of community papers Stuff plans to close.

The media company reported yesterday that it could not find buyers for Wairarapa News, the Tribune, Waiheke Marketplace, Rotorua Review and Ruapehu Press so had to close them.

This adds to a list of closures that already includes Christchurch Mail, Napier Mail, Hastings Mail, North Waikato News and Discovery magazine – all of which are to close on April 28.

Scott’s later move to buy into the business gave Sheppard greater economies of scale across purchasing, marketing, logistics, retail services and product development, and opened up new opportunities for exports.

Scott gained a bigger presence in Australasia, where it lagged behind its rivals, and added more brands to its portfolio.

Scott was founded by American Ed Scott, an engineer who invented the aluminium ski pole. While the company is still involved in skiing, biking now accounts for the majority of its turnover.

Steve Paraskevas said the cycle market in New Zealand has recovered well in the last year or two.

“In particular the retailers are experiencing double digit sales growth off the back of strong electric bike sales,” he said. “This new emerging category is going through a strong growth phase in New Zealand reflecting the trend globally.”

Data from Statistics New Zealand shows 23,326 electric bikes were imported into the country in 2017, up from 13,364 in 2016, 6899 in 2015, and 2509 in 2014.

The Struthers family, which founded the Avanti bicycle brand and built Sheppard Industries into the largest cycling company in Australasia, has cut its final ties to the business, selling its remaining shareholding to a Switzerlandbased company, Scott Sports.

The family sold most of its shareholding in the business to Scott Sports in 2015, and exited its remaining holding in December for an undisclosed sum.

Kim Struthers, the son of founder John Struthers, stepped down as New Zealand country manager last month and the Struthers family no longer has any connection with the business.

The Avanti brand has become a household name in New Zealand, providing bikes for the country’s Olympic athletes like gold medal winner Sarah Ulmer and sponsoring the ‘Avantidrome’, the National Cycling Centre of Excellence velodrome in Cambridge.

Company founder John Struthers has previously detailed how the business began in the early 80s when his children got into BMX riding as the sport was gaining in popularity.

Showing a bit of thigh ...

ever under-rate chicken thighs.

They might not be the most attractive part of a chook, but they can’t be beaten for flavour and they’re a far juicier option than chicken breast.

Buy thighs on or off the bone, cook them whole or chop them into cubes and cook in a tasty sauce, serve with rice, pasta or potatoes and you’ll have a filling and tasty meal on the table in record time.

Quick and easy baked chicken thighs 8 boneless chicken thighs 1/2 C white wine 8 pieces streaky bacon 4 medium tomatoes, diced 10 cherry tomatoes, halved 1/4 C parmesan cheese, grated 1 small bunch fresh basil ■ Preheat the oven to 190°C. ■ Wrap each chicken thigh with a strip of bacon, making it into a neat parcel.

■ In an ovenproof dish, combine the wine, diced tomatoes and the halved small tomatoes.

■ Arrange the chicken parcels over the tomatoes in the dish.

■ Sprinkle with parmesan and basil, and season well.

■ Cover with foil and bake for about 20 minutes.

■ Remove foil and cook a further 20 minutes until the chicken is golden and cooked through.

■ Serve with the pan juices.

Crumbed basil chicken 1 egg 140ml thickened cream 1/2 C (60g) dried breadcrumbs 40g grated parmesan 2T chopped fresh basil 4 garlic cloves, minced Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 1kg skinless chicken thighs 4T olive oil ■ Preheat oven to 200°C .

■ In a medium bowl, combine the egg and cream and beat together well.

■ In a separate medium bowl, combine the breadcrumbs, parmesan, basil, garlic, salt and

pepper.

■ Rinse chicken and pat dry.

■ Dip each piece into the egg wash and then coat liberally in the breadcrumb mixture.

■ Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat ■ Fry the chicken in the oil for 5 minutes per side, or until both sides are golden brown and crusty. Place chicken in a baking dish and cover with foil.

■ Bake covered in preheated oven for 15 minutes.

■ Remove the foil and bake uncovered for 15 more minutes, or more until browned and chicken juices run clear.

Lemon garlic chicken and potatoes 8 chicken thighs 1/2 C vegetable oil 4 large potatoes, peeled and quartered 1/4 C white wine vinegar 2 lemons, juiced 2 cloves crushed garlic 1T dried oregano 1T dried parsley 1 onion, minced Salt and pepper, to taste ■ Preheat the oven to 180°C. ■ Arrange the thigh pieces in a

large baking tray.

■ Put half of the oil in a large frying pan over a medium-high heat ■ Fry the potatoes until golden brown (add more oil if you need).

■ Then put them in the pan with the chicken.

■ Combine the vinegar, lemon juice, garlic, oregano, parsley, onion, salt and pepper with the rest of the oil and pour this mixture over the chicken and potatoes.

■ Bake in the preheated oven for 75 minutes, basting the chicken and potatoes with the sauce mixture.

■ Let rest for five minutes and serve.

Chicken and broccoli bake 2T olive oil 500g chicken thigh fillets, cut into chunks 3 potatoes, peeled, boiled and thickly sliced 1 broccoli head, cut into florets, blanched 420g can creamy chicken soup 1/2 C sour cream 1/4 C mayonnaise Italian parsley, chopped, to serve Topping: 1C panko breadcrumbs

1/2 C grated tasty cheese 1/4 C grated parmesan cheese ■ Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced).

■ In a large frying pan, heat oil on high.

■ Brown chicken for 2-3 minutes on each side. Transfer to a plate.

■ Arrange cooked potato on the bottom of a large, greased casserole dish.

■ Top with chicken followed with a layer of broccoli.

■ In a jug, combine soup, sour cream and mayonnaise. Pour over broccoli.

■ Topping: Combine all ingredients in a small bowl.

■ Sprinkle topping evenly over top.

■ Bake for 45 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through, and topping is crisp and golden ■ Sprinkle with parsley to serve.

Herbed up chicken 6 chicken thighs, skinned and boned, approximately 500g 1 clove garlic, crushed 2T breadcrumbs 1T grated parmesan cheese 1 small lemon, zested and juiced 2T chopped parsley 1 1/2 t cumin seeds, toasted and lightly crushed

1 drizzle olive oil, to moisten Breadcrumbs, or panko crumbs, as much as is needed to coat chicken 1 drizzle oil, for frying 1 lime, or lemon, cut into wedges for serving ■ Place chicken thighs in a shallow ceramic or glass dish.

■ Mix together garlic, breadcrumbs, parmesan, lemon, parsley and cumin seeds.

■ Moisten with olive oil, season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

■ Spread evenly over chicken thighs.

■ Cover, place in the fridge and leave to marinate for about 1 hour.

■ Remove from fridge and bring to room temperature.

■ Pour enough oil into a large frying pan to just cover the base and heat to medium.

■ Rub marinade into chicken, as much as you can, then roll each chicken thigh in dry breadcrumbs.

■ Place in hot oil and fry on each side until brown and cooked through.

■ Serve with plenty of lime or lemon wedges.

Pulled beef nachos Serves 6

■ Preheat the oven to 160°C. ■ Place a large frying pan over low heat. Add a dash of oil and the onion and cook until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for a further 30 seconds.

Transfer to a casserole dish.

■ Rub the meat with the cumin, allspice and oregano. Increase the heat and add another dash of oil to the pan. Add the beef in batches and brown on both sides, placing in the casserole

dish as you go.

■ Pour the stock, tomatoes, tomato paste, vinegar and add the brown sugar to the pan and bring up to the boil. Add the chilli flakes, cinnamon stick and bay leaf and pour into the casserole dish. Cover with the lid, place in the oven and cook for 2 hours.

■ Remove beef from the oven and add the red kidney beans. Return to the oven and continue to cook for a further 30 minutes.

■ Remove and discard the cinnamon stick and bay leaf. Pull pieces of the beef apart using 2 forks. Season.

■ Serve with corn chips and sour cream and top with sprigs of coriander. Pass the lime wedges.

FA apologises for tweet The English Football Association has apologised to Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United for a tweet sent on the official FA Cup account following the club’s semi-final at Wembley. United won the game 2-1 and shortly after full-time, a tweet was posted which appeared to poke fun at the performance of Spurs and England striker Harry Kane. In a mockinterview style, the tweet read: “Me: What’s that in your pocket, Chris?” before posting a video of United defender Chris Smalling saying: “Harry Kane”.

Karate kids in top form Three members of the JION International Karate Dojo Ashburton group gained national selection after a successful foray at the New Zealand Open Karate Championships over the weekend in Christchurch.

Ashburton had a group of 11 members competing at the championships and walked away with six medals for their efforts.

But the icing on the cake was the announcement of three of the group being given national recognition.

Taylah Burrowes, 14, and Kyle Cabangun, 15, have been selected onto the New Zealand National Team to compete at the Oceania Champs in Auckland next month, while Charles Savage will also be competing in the Oceania Cup, for competitors who are 13 years and under.

During the course of the weekend’s championships Ashburton members claimed two gold medals.

Carina Lupse picked up gold in the female 6-7 years development Kumite (sparring) and Burrowes showed all her class to win the female 14-15 years +54kg Kumite.

Madison Soal was in good form too, claiming two silver medals in the female 12-13 years development Kata (forms) and also in the Kumite.

Bronze medals were picked up Isabella Wang in the female 8-9 years development +29kg Kumite and also Jack McIntosh in the male 12-13 years combined Kumite.

The club was also well represented by Savage, Cabangun, Madison Edmond, Alexandra Coiocaru, Holly Burrowes and Brooke Edmond.

Enis Bardhi scored from two free-kicks in three minutes to drag Levante to the brink of LaLiga safety with a 3-1 win at Athletic Bilbao yesterday. The Macedonia midfielder’s brace secured a vital away victory, creating a nine-point cushion over third-bottom Deportivo La Coruna with four games to play. Jose Luis Morales sealed the victory with a last-minute strike laid on by Chema Rodriguez.

Verona in trouble Genoa defeated Hellas Verona 3-1 to nudge their visitors ever closer to the Italian Serie A relegation trap door. Verona responded to Iuri Medeiros’s early strike with a penalty from Romulo only for Rossoblu substitutes Daniel Bessa and Goran Pandev to score late goals at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

No action for Man City Manchester City will not face action over the pitch invasion which followed their Premier League win over Swansea, it has been reported. Thousands of supporters swarmed on to the field at the Etihad Stadium to celebrate the team’s title win after Pep Guardiola’s side thrashed the Swans 5-0. It is understood the Football Association has sought observations over the matter but it will go no further as the governing body believes the incursion to be celebratory in nature.

Phoenix licence safe Wellington Phoenix chairman Rob Morrison has refuted recent media reports that the club’s licence is up for sale. “As has been well reported in recent times, the A-League is in transition including a significant investigation by FIFA into the best governance model for the FFA and the impacts this will have on A-League and its independence,” said Morrison yesterday.

In brief Ko slips further down Kiwi golfer Lydia Ko has dropped a further two places to 18 in the latest women’s world rankings. Ko, who turned 21 yesterday, finished tied for 31st after closing with a two-under 69 at the LPGA’s LA Open in California. Still struggling to find her best form, Ko finished 14 strokes behind Thai winner Moriya Jutanugarn. Meanwhile, after finishing 12th at the latest European Tour event in Morocco, Ryan Fox has climbed four places to 122.

Second round defeat After a gruelling Commonwealth Games squash campaign in which she claimed two golds, Joelle King has fallen in the second round of her return to the professional world tour. Kiwi world No.4 King lost to Hong Kong woman Annie Au 11-6, 7-11, 11-8, 5-11, 6-11 in the El Gouna International in Egypt. It was the 29-year-old’s second match since accumulating a singles gold, women’s doubles gold and mixed doubles bronze at the Games on the Gold Coast.

Skiers end season in style Lake Hood waterskiers produced a glittering end to the season with plenty of medals at the Water Ski Nationals in Northland last weekend.

Hugh Donaldson won gold for his overall performance in the under 21 grade while Emily Milner also earned herself an overall gold in the junior girls’ grade.

Donaldson won the slalom competition in his age-group,

flew 50.3m for second in the jump and was second in the tricks, to give him the best overall score.

Brother George was second overall, winning the tricks, coming third in the jump and fourth in the slalom.

Milner won the tricks in her junior girls’ competition and was second in the jump with 25.2m and second in the slalom.

There were plenty of other podium results for the Lake Hood skiers, with Hugh Donaldson earning a silver for his overall performance in the open men’s while George Donaldson won bronze in the open men’s jump.

Lana Donaldson won silver in the women’s slalom while her brother Karl took out the silver in the men’s overall competition and her father Neil won silver in

the senior men’s 3 tricks.

Rachel Donaldson also took silver in the women’s tricks.

Gavin Green was the best overall in the senior men’s 3 competition and got himself in the record books again with his performance on the trick skis.

The men’s B competition yielded an overall gold for Tom Green and a silver for Ricus Van Zeyl in the jump.

Pardon for Johnson?

United States President Donald Trump says he’s considering a posthumous pardon for boxing’s first black heavyweight champion more than 100 years after the late Jack Johnson was convicted by an all-white jury of accompanying a white woman across state lines.

Trump announced on Twitter that Sylvester Stallone had called to bring Johnson’s story to his attention. “Others have looked at this over the years, most thought it would be done, but yes, I am considering a Full Pardon!”

The Ruakaka trainer produced Comin’through to finish second to Blue Breeze in Saturday’s open 2200m and Romancer to run third in the Gr.2 Manco Easter Handicap (1600m).

“I was happy with their runs,” Gibbs said.

“Comin’through has gone out for a spell and it’s likely we’ll do the same with Romancer.

“Comin’through has had a long campaign and it was a last-minute decision to throw a late nom in for Pukekohe.

“He’s been honest and was only a length and a-half from the winner in the Auckland Cup. “He’ll be set for a New Zealand Cup campaign.

“As for Romancer, there will be plenty of opportunities for him next season.

“He’s not a mudder at all and I thought on a slow track he was a chance, but when it became heavy

Ringo ready to rock ‘n roll Ringo’s connections were satisfied with his first-up run and further improvement is expected from the stakes winner and Group One performer.

The Awapuni galloper overcame a tardy start from a wide gate at Hastings to finish seventh in the Listed New Zealand Bloodstock Sprint (1200m) and the Fastnet Rock gelding has since trained on well.

Ringo will further his preparation on his home track today in the Listed Manawatu ITM Anzac 1550m, in which he will be ridden by Jonathan Riddell.

“I’d probably prefer it to be 1400m rather than 1550m, but I’m really happy with him,” Breslin said.

“He’s an older horse now so he’s taking a bit longer to come up and he has to give weight to a lot of horses in a handicap.”

Ringo has been a trusty servant of the stable with eight wins, including success in the Gr.3 Red Badge Spring Sprint (1400m), and a third placing in the Gr.1 Captain Cook Stakes (1600m).

Tough ask for the Celts Celtic face an uphill battle to get things back on track in the Combined Country Rugby competition today when they tackle defending champions, Southbridge at Celtic this afternoon.

The only home game in Mid Canterbury on today’s Anzac day round, the Celtic and Southbridge clash looks set to be a thriller and all eyes will be on the green and whites after they suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday when beaten soundly by Saracens.

Shane Enright’s men will have

to put that disappointment behind them quickly ahead of today’s clash which, judging on season form, will be another step up.

After starting a busy week, in which they will play three matches in seven days, with an unbeaten run behind them, Celtic will need some points from today’s clash to stay in competition contention with tough games still remaining against BDI, Waihora and Lincoln before they have the bye in the final round of pool play.

Southern have a good chance to further enhance their placing on the Section Two leader board with their trip up the road to Rolleston today giving them an opportunity to make it two from two for the busy week, after they beat Hurunui on Saturday.

They will also be conscious of the need to manage their players with a repeat of last year’s Watters’ Cup final in the offing on Saturday when they host Rakaia.

After blowing a lead early after half-time on Saturday, Hampstead get their best chance at

their first win for the season when they head to North Canterbury to tackle Ohoka.

The game of the round however will come from Prebbleton when Section Two heavyweights, Prebbleton and Rakaia lock horns.

Both sides are low-flying in the competition with points on the board and the winner of the match will go a long way to cementing themselves a spot in the playoff stages of the competition.

Methven will sit this round of the competition out with the bye.

Ferns get two tests against Australia New Zealand fans will get their first chance to see the World Champion Black Ferns live when they play two home test matches against Australia in August.

The trans-Tasman rivals will compete for the Laurie O’Reilly Memorial Trophy on the same night the All Blacks take on Australia in their bid for the Bledisloe Cup. “Having our two top sides take on the Aussies in the same night is something special,” New Zealand Rugby chief executive Steve Tew said.

He said the double-header event came as the popularity of the Black Ferns and women’s rugby had “grown massively in

The double header takes place in Auckland on August 25, one week after Sydney’s ANZ Stadium hosts an earlier double header featuring the four teams on August 18.

Personal bests and medals aplenty

Local swimmers were right in the middle of the action at the New Zealand National Age Group Championships in Auckland late last week.

In a field of more than 700 competitors, members of the Jennian Homes Ashburton Swim Team made sure they were well noticed, with fantastic results across the board.

Blake Farr led the Ashburton swimmers’ charge with some exceptional results, notwithstanding the fact it was his first ever

appearance at a national swimming meet.

Farr qualified for the finals in three of his four events and claimed a number of personal bests along the way.

He began his week in the 400 metres freestyle and took nearly nine and a half seconds off his best time to finish in 10th overall.

He then beat his personal best in the 200 metres freestyle not once, but twice, bettering it by almost six seconds in the heat before shaving off another half a second in the finals to finish in ninth place.

He wrapped up a successful week with a third personal best time in the 100 metres

freestyle, taking almost three seconds off his best time on his way to finishing 10th for his 14-year-old age group in New Zealand.

Super-swimmer Bree Middleton was also in amongst the action, claiming four medals.

Middleton competed in the 14-year-old girls’ division and claimed bronze medals in the 100, 200, 400 and 800 metres freestyle events.

She was also selected in the Zonal Makos A 4 x 200 metre relay team and led the 15 and under team to set a new personal best and put the team in a good position.

Unfortunately, they were unable to hold off the challenge of the North Island team and had to settle for silver, beaten by less than half a second.

Jared Scammell also set a personal best at the championships, swimming strongly in his races and claiming a new time in the 50-metre butterfly while Josh Giles set a personal best in the 50 metres freestyle and went close to doing the same in the 400 freestyle and 200 metre backstroke.

Bailey Tait was selected for the 16-yearold and older Zonal Makos B relay team which finished fourth.
