The RSA is expecting a large turnout at Anzac Day commemorations held across the district today. Ashburton RSA president Maurice Baker said they encourage people to attend and honour both the fallen and those who have returned from war. “We are anticipating a big turnout at the ceremonies as they are all well attended, but we are always hoping for an increase.” Special touches at this year’s ceremonies include the MSA Choir performing at the cemetery, having the searchlight at the
dawn service and the three-gun salute at the civic service. Those who attend the dawn and civic services in Ashburton will see 316 crosses arranged next to the cenotaph, each bearing the name of a soldier from the region who fell in World War One. The names are taken from the Cenotaph, with more crosses distributed to other centres in the region, bringing the total number to more than 500. Baker said this year there will also be a focus on the centenary of the Battle of Passchendaele. Rain is expecting to stay away in the

The Ashburton Dawn Service takes place from 6.30am at the Cenotaph Baring Square West, which will be conducted by Major Ken Smith, of the Salvation Army and the speaker will be Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew. At 9am people are invited to gather at the Cemetery Service Services Plot for a service again conducted by Major Ken Smith. The Civic Service and Wreath Laying takes place at the Cenotaph Baring Square West at 11am. It will be conducted by Rev David Brown, and features guest speakers Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel,
and the Ashburton College head boy and girl Nic Thomassen and Samantha McArthur. In other centres, the Hinds sub-branch service will be held at the Hinds Hall from 10am, the Mayfield sub-branch service takes place at the Mayfield Memorial Hall at 10am, the Methven sub-branch service is held at the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall at 10am and the Rakaia commemorative service will be held at the Rakaia Community Centre from 10.15am. Last year more than 1000 people attended the civic ceremony at the Ashburton cenotaph.
