Mid Canterbury laid claim to another All Black when Tim Perry was yesterday announced in the All Black squad to tour the northern hemisphere. Perry is the son of former All Black Grant Perry, who farms at Rakaia. The 29-year-old went to St Andrew’s College but made a name for himself playing for Mid Canterbury in the 2010 Heartland championship. He played in the Crusaders Super Rugby team this year and plays his provincial rugby for Tasman, who made the final of the NPC after a one-point win over Ranfurly Shield holder Taranaki on Saturday. Grant and Brenda Perry listened to the All Blacks team announcement on the radio yesterday at 10.30am; their son was in the Tasman Makos training shed after a team run. He called them later yesterday to confirm the news. Grant Perry said it was a great opportunity for the front-rower, who liked to spend time hunting pigs when he wasn’t
training for rugby. “Now he needs to play well and try and stay there.” Perry senior was captain of the Mid Canterbury rugby team in his playing days and in 1980 was called into the All Blacks team to tour Fiji. He played one game. “I was a replacement for the Fiji tour. I found out on the Greymouth golf course. Mid Canterbury were touring around doing the Seddon Shield tour. Old Neville Buchanan, the manager at the time, came up and said ‘you’ve got to get your gear packed and get to Fiji’. That was probably a bit more relaxing than listening to it on the radio.” He said he and Brenda would now be travelling to support the All Blacks, taking the opportunity to catch up with family living in that part of the world. The All Blacks will kick off their Northern tour against the Barbarians in two weeks’ time, before playing a test against France a week later. Tim Perry is one of four new faces in the team and coach Steve Hansen said

his scrimmaging skills would be valued. “He’s a really good scrummager who has been around a long time and understands what is required up in that front row position. His core skills are pretty good, we’ve just got to develop the rest of his game.” He said the tour would be an exciting opportunity for the new players. The team includes Ryan Crotty, who was in the New Zealand Schoolboys’ team alongside Perry in 2006. The Perrys’ phone was ringing red hot yesterday with congratulations, the couple had just returned home after Grant competed in the World Jetboat Marathon, which included a leg on his home river, the Rakaia. Yesterday’s good news was tempered though with the sad news of the death of rugby friend John (Bigsy) McLay on Saturday.
