Cowboys hit the dust one after the other under a hot spring sun at the Methven rodeo yesterday. A crowd of about 7000 people from throughout Canterbury and further afield cheered and gasped as the action played out. St John personnel were kept busy throughout the day, treating competitors for bumps and bruises, and one 18-yearold open bull rider was transported to Ashburton Hospital in an ambulance in a moderate condition. Methven rodeo president Tom Plunkett won the open bare back event, on Waimate bronc Tonto, the horse itself a champ after having been named buck-
ing horse of the year four times. The 24-year-old said he was happy with his ride, and it was an improvement on Winchester on Saturday where he placed fourth. “I was a little bit rusty,” he said. He was now aiming for more rodeo points throughout the season and hopefully making it to the national finals. He had achieved a top four placing in the nationals previously, but took last season off. The season after this one he would be back to serious competing and “chasing hard” the prospect of a national win. He said the secret to doing well in bare back was simple. “You just lift on your rigging, lean back and enjoy it,” Plunkett said. The weather had been perfect, sunny
but not too hot, and was probably responsible for crowd numbers being up by about 1000 on last year. The crowd had been well behaved and enjoyed the event, and Plunkett thanked sponsors and the rodeo committee for their hard work. “It ran smooth as, it ran like clockwork,” Plunkett said. Announcer Craig Wiggins kicked off afternoon events with a comment relating to the controversial issue of animal welfare. “If you read social media, people will tell you we don’t respect our animals,” Wiggins said. However, rodeo riders and organisers respected animals more than most, and people from urban areas attending rodeos helped bridge the rural-urban divide.
