They haven’t quite reached the hype of the German football team’s wives and girlfriends but the All Blacks’ partners are getting a lot of love on social media. Black Stick Gemma Flynn, the girlfriend of All Blacks captain Richie McCaw, has posted a photo of the pair visiting the borough of Richmond on her personal Instagram account which has attracted more than 1400 likes in the past day. “Relaxing afternoon in Richmond... feeling extra fresh with this weather and new do,” Flynn wrote. Flynn previously drew attention with a picture of her and McCaw dressed up as Catwoman and Batman, and has since posted a picture outside Cardiff stadium and video from the All Blacks quarter-final match against France.

German Messerschmitt to fly For the first time in 20 years, a German World War Two Messerschmitt Bf 109 will be seen in New Zealand skies, at Easter’s Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow. Show general manager Ed Taylor said this week the British-based Messerschmitt would take part in aerial displays, with British counterpart, the Spitfire. “There are only a handful of these magnificent aircraft still flying today so this is a major coup for us,” Mr Taylor said. The last time a Messerschmitt flew in New Zealand was at the 1996 warbirds show, courtesy of show founder Sir Tim Wallis.

Elton bringing out new album Elton John has announced his first album in nearly three years, on which the pop legend reunites with long-time backup artists. The 68-year-old English singer said that Wonderful Crazy Night, his 33rd studio album, will come out worldwide on February 5. A first song from the album, Looking Up, shows John going back to the blues-rock sound characteristic of his early work, with the song driven by a heavy rhythm guitar. The song – with a chorus in which John sings, “I’m looking up more than I look down” – was released for fans who pre-order the album. If the song – both musically and lyrically – is representative of the album, it marks a return to an upbeat feel for John after his last album, The Diving Board, a more stripped-down work consisting largely of John singing alone with his piano.

Unbroken finally set for Japan

Angelina Jolie’s wartime-based movie Unbroken will finally be shown in Japan over a year after its release. This is despite attempts from nationalists who blasted it as racist to prevent it being screened, a distributor said yesterday.

The film, directed by Jolie, which depicts an American prisoner of war being tortured by a sadistic Japanese guard, is set to hit screens in February, beginning in Tokyo before being shown in other locations nationwide. Unbroken is based on Laura Hillenbrand’s 2010 best-seller and tells the story of American Olympic athlete and air force pilot Louis Zamperini, who was captured by Japanese soldiers after his bomber crashed into the Pacific in 1943. Scenes of Zamperini being tortured and starved provoked anger among Japanese right-wingers, who described it as racist and antiJapanese.

Prince Jackson speaks up Michael Jackson’s son Prince has finally acknowledged rumours suggesting the late superstar is not his biological dad, but insists he’s the only father he’s ever known.

The King of Pop welcomed Prince, his first child, with ex-wife Debbie Rowe in 1997, and his sister Paris was born a year later. Critics have long speculated over the paternity of the kids and their 13-year-old sibling Prince Michael Jackson II, but Michael maintained he had fathered all three of his offspring.

Now his eldest son was prompted to speak out after one Twitter user cruelly insisted his mother’s former boss, dermatologist Dr Arnold Klein, was his real dad. Prince refused to get angry and instead responded with a comment suggesting he is well aware Michael may not be his biological dad.

“The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb...,” he tweeted. “I was raised by my dad with my brother and sister.”

Ashburton St John toes hard line

St John Ashburton takes a tough line when it comes to the safety of its staff, says spokesman Ian Henderson.

His comments follow on from media across New Zealand reporting on recent assaults on St John staff.

Mr Henderson said while Ashburton does not currently have these issues, all staff and volunteers were trained to protect themselves.

“If something does happen where our ambulance crews do feel unsafe then they will remove themselves from the scene and alert the Clinical Control Centre [and] the police will also usually be called to assist,” Mr Henderson said.

Ambulance crews do not enter scenes when there has been violent activity reported, until police have declared the area safe, he said.

“We have a zero tolerance for assaults on our staff and we will prosecute anyone who does.”

New Zealand Ambulance Association chairman Mark Quin said assaults on ambulance staff had noticeably increased across the country, over the past few years.

While there was no one reason for the rise, Mr Quin said a number of the assaults were directly linked to alcohol and drug abuse.

Frustration about waiting for an ambulance can also be an issue as often in rural and semi-rural areas ambulance staff are the only medical service available, he said.

“Ambulance services are being used for anything from lower acuity work that could been seen by a GP or accident medical clinical right through to emergencies,” he said.

“We are literally the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff in many areas … we are the only resource that is floating around that is available for any sort of medical response.”

This has resulted in paramedics and volunteers feeling fearful when sent out on certain jobs, particularly in isolated areas.

“Officers are now fearful because they are going out to these places on their own to a rural house to a patient who is living on their own,” Mr Quin said.

“But going back years ago no one would have thought to attack an ambulance officer, it was sacred. Now people have no hesitation.”

A family divided by RWC fever

Jody and Daniel Binnie are a couple divided.

For the pair, this weekend’s All Blacks versus South Africa match is a different kind of test.

Mrs Binnie is an avid Springboks supporter while her husband is an All Black fanatic.

Born and raised in South Africa until the age of 20, Mrs Binnie moved to New Zealand in 2007 and the support for her home

team has never wavered.

However, the rivalry doesn’t stop there – Mrs Binnie’s stepdad, Keith Reinecke, is also an avid Boks’ fan and goes headto-head with her husband every time there’s a test.

“They normally have bets on and my husband has just received a video saying the All Blacks would be scared on Sunday, it’s a bit of a joke in the house,” she said.

“There’s always a box of beer

on the match when it’s the All Blacks and the Springboks.”

Married for four years, their opposing views show no sign of fading away but it’s all in jest, she said.

The couple are set up for this weekend where they will watch the match with Mrs Binnie’s South African family.

The majority of their friends in Ashburton are South African so Mr Binnie is used to being in the minority, she said.

The tavern is one of three Ashburton Trust outlets that will be getting into the rugby spirit and opening well before sunrise on Sunday. All three opened for the All Blacks quarter-final match against France, with more than 200 people turning up to share breakfast while they supported the All Blacks, said trust acting chief executive Robert Reid.

All venues had breakfast bookings for tomorrow’s match, but the 3am start might keep a few people in bed, Mr Reid said.

Be patient and take breaks

Highway Patrol will have extra staff in Canterbury this weekend to ensure all motorists have a safe break.

Police will be focusing on high-risk driving behaviours such as drink driving, speeding, not wearing safety belts and using mobile phones while driving.

Mid-South Canterbury Highway Patrol Sergeant Steve Burgerhout said police will be paying special attention to speed and will have no tolerance for anyone driving 4km/h over the speed limit.

People need to expect delays because there will be more

people on the roads making the most of the three-day break and attending the Methven and Winchester rodeos and the Waimate 50, he said.

This weekend is also typically the first time caravans are taken out ahead of summer and they have a speed limit of 90km/h, Sergeant Burgerhout said.

To coincide with the Rugby World Cup, in addition to receiving an infringement, drivers who commit offences that carry demerit points may also get a visual reminder – a yellow card reminding them of the potential future consequences of continued risk-taking.

The long weekend has come with a warning from the NZ

Transport Agency to motorists to be patient, to take breaks and to drive within speed limits. While there will be no active work sites on roads around the South Island, there will be speed restrictions in some places.

“Increased traffic volumes, tiredness and driving in unfamiliar environments can make driving over these long weekends not only more stressful but also more risky,” said the agency’s safety director Ernst Zöllner.

“Remember you’re sharing the road with many others, you have a responsibility to be courteous and patient to ensure you look after yourself, your families and other road users.”

Lake set for busy weekend The team of volunteers who man the waters of Ashburton’s Lake Hood, are battening down the hatches for a busy weekend.

Labour weekend traditionally signals the start of the summer boating season, but Lake Hood manager Gilbert Murdoch said the big influx of boats started early this year.

Boaties who return to the lake after several months away will notice a few changes.

“There’s a new access road into the lake and they’ll find there’s more water and more grassed areas,” he said.

With the lake extension project powering ahead, boaties and swimmers can now move freely from the original lake into the new area, Mr Murdoch said.

There might be more water but the same rules apply for everyone using the lake, he said.

“Life jackets must be worn and boats must be registered.”

There are now more than 1200 boats on the lake register.

“It’s amazing where they’re all from, they’re certainly not all locals,” he said.

While the lake was about having fun, safety would always be paramount.

Last chance for photos Labour weekend is the last opportunity for Mid Cantabrians’ photographic skills to shine in a book that will be shared with the world. The Ashburton District Council is looking for a selection of photos it publish in a book that will showcase the best of the Ashburton District. The project is the brainchild of mayor Angus McKay who said it was important for the council to have something that represents the district that it can give to civic visitors. Photos must be digital and must be submitted in JPEG format and 2MB or above in size. They can be either black and white or colour and must be 300 or more dpi.

Entry forms are available on the council website and photos must be submitted by Monday night.

A rugby-mad Ashburton family is gutted over the theft of an official All Blacks’ flag which until this week flew proudly outside their Bridge Street home.

Debbie Jessop said her husband Tim was sure the flag was there on Tuesday night, but when she went to work on Wednesday morning it was

gone. he flag was securely attached to a metal flagpole and neither Mr nor Mrs Jessop believe it could have been torn off by the wind.

“It was a proper flag, attached right down the side to the pole,” Mrs Jessop said.

“It’s a kick in the guts really.”

Three-year-old Charlie is also missing the flag.

A self-confessed All Black fa-

natic, Mrs Jessop blacked out her entire living room during the 2011 Rugby World Cup, but the arrival of Charlie on top of work commitments has curtailed her celebrations this time round.

“I’m a massive fan, moreso than Tim really,” she said.

The Speaker is investigating whether former MP Garry Knapp is eligible for a perk for international travel that he has claimed for almost three decades – but it appears Mr Knapp was eligible for it when he left Parliament in 1987.

Witnesses sought Police are hoping to identify witnesses after a fatal crash in Pakuranga that killed a college student last week. Josh Martin, a student at Pakuranga College, died at the scene after his motorcycle collided with a Rav4 at the intersection of Pakuranga Highway and Sir Lloyd Drive at 12.55pm on October 15. Counties Manukau Police urge any witnesses to contact police.

Population growth slows Ashburton’s population is growing, but that growth appears to be slowing.

The latest data released by Statistics New Zealand puts the district’s population at June 30 at 33,200, up 1.2 per cent on June 30 last year.

This is marginally below the New Zealand average of 1.9 per cent.

While for many people the focus is on tomorrow’s Rugby World Cup semi-final, for one group of Mid Cantabrians today is game day.

At 2pm today the district will host its first ever rugby match between the Samoan communities of Ashburton and Christchurch.

Organiser and Ashburton player John Kasiano said the inaugural match would see the standard 15-aside rugby union rules apply with the players aged between 18 and 35 years of age.

The reason behind the friendly game was to get the Samoan community, particularly the youth, together, he said.

Mr Kasiano wants to make the games regular and encourage more people to jump on board.

“We want to expand this down the South Island too, to other Islanders like Fijians and Tongans,” he said.

The game will kick-off at 2pm at the Hampstead Rugby Club on Bridge Street, and following the match the Ashburton side will put on an island feast.

Mr Kasiano said members of the community are welcome to come out with friends and family to take in the action and support the Ashburton side.

Another match is set to be played in Christchurch, however the date is yet to be finalised.

Selwyn is not only the fastest growing district in Canterbury on 6.5 per cent, it is the fastest growing district in New Zealand.

The South Island takes the three top places for growth with Queenstown-Lakes in second place on 4.9 per cent and Waimakariri third, 3.6 per cent.

Ashburton’s population growth rate peaked in 2011 at 3

per cent, when it increased by 900 people. Year on year, the district’s population has grown on average, 500 people each year.

As a region, Auckland was the fastest growing over the past year on 2.9 per cent (an increase of 43,500 people).

This accounted for about half of New Zealand’s growth last year. Canterbury was second on

2.1 per cent and contributed 14 per cent to the national population growth.

Across New Zealand, all but five of New Zealand’s territorial local authorities had population growth and all but one region (the West Coast) grew. Buller was the local authority with the sharpest population decline, 2.1 per cent.

In brief Rudd out on bond AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd has been placed on a goodbehaviour bond for nine months after breaking an alcohol-ban during his eight-month home detention sentence. Rudd, 61, was due to defend the breach of his detention conditions relating to the possession or consumption of alcohol at a judge-alone hearing in November – but he pleaded guilty to the breach when he appeared in Tauranga District Court yesterday.

Judge Peter Rollo sentenced Rudd to come up if called upon within nine months, which is effectively a good behaviour bond, and ordered him to pay $130 court costs.

Cards skimmed

Hoping scarecrow will win

A “very realistic-looking” card skimming device has been used to take money from the accounts of at least five people on Auckland’s North Shore, police believe. A gluelike substance was found by police around the card reader of an ATM outside a dairy in Albany Village.

They believe the offenders are putting the device over the cardreading slot to capture information on the card’s magnetic strip. There has been five reported cases in the past fortnight.

Anglers urged to go fishing before drought kicks in

The weather forecast is looking good for east coast anglers over the first long weekend of the fishing season.

A cold, wet front heading up the West Coast should spill into the headwaters of many of Canterbury’s rivers, including the Rangitata and Rakaia, Central South Island Fish & Game officer Rhys Adams said.

“The Rangitata may be carrying colour from the rain it received on Wednesday regardless,” he said.

“This was the biggest flush the Rangitata has had for some time peaking at around 210 cumecs.”

The prospect of a flood prompted ECan to use heavy machinery to modify the beach at the river mouth to protect the hut settlements from flooding.

Fellow Central South Island Fish & Game officer Mark Webb said there hasn’t been much activity on the rivers to date but with an El Nino weather pattern forecast and the prospect of a long, dry summer ahead anglers

“Get out and catch a fish now,” Mr Webb said.

“If anglers don’t get out early in the season they might not get too much of a chance once it gets dry, possibly until March or April.”

Teacher guilty of sex offences A female teacher accused of sexual offending against a schoolboy has been found guilty on seven charges.

The woman, whose name is suppressed, was on trial in the High Court at Wellington this week facing charges of doing indecent acts, unlawful sexual connection and sexual violation.

Several members of the boy’s family were in court to hear the jury’s verdict yesterday.

The jury deliberated for almost four hours before reaching its decision.

She was found not guilty on two charges, but guilty on seven others.

The teacher gasped and cried as the verdicts of “guilty” were read out.

The alleged offences happened in and around Porirua and Paraparaumu, north of Wellington.

The boy, now in his mid-teens, told the court about a visit the pair made to a motel in early 2014.

The court heard the Wellington woman became pregnant after the visit, but had an abortion.

But the woman denied claims of sexual offending against the boy.

“It’s disturbing. It wasn’t me. I did not do that at all,” she said in evidence to the court.

“I would never do that to a child. Never,” she added tearily.

During frequently tense crossexamination, she told Crown prosecutor Dale La Hood the

boy was a liar and “manipulator”, and denied being in love with the boy.

He was “emotionally fragile”, she said, but disputed the Crown prosecutor’s suggestion this may have made the boy prone to manipulation.

He was “quite street-smart” and was himself “a manipulator of a lot of situations”, the teacher claimed.

She initially faced 15 charges, and was accused of kissing the boy and having oral sex between 2011 and 2014, as well as one instance of sexual intercourse.

The woman’s name suppression will be reviewed on November 6.

She will be remanded in custody ahead of her sentencing on

Friday November 27.

The woman was found guilty on six charges of unlawful sexual connection, and guilty on one charge of doing an indecent act on a minor.

The jury found her not guilty on two charges of doing an indecent act on a child.

The teacher was found guilty of having sex with the boy.

The jury also found her guilty of performing oral sex on the boy and kissing him.

Some people gathered in the public gallery also cried as the jury announced its verdict.

Outside court, one of the boy’s relatives said the family was glad the trial was over.

“Of course we’re relieved,” she said.

Lodge donation a boost for biographers Thanks to a $2000 donation from Ashburton’s Thistle Masonic Lodge, Hospice Mid Canterbury’s biography writers will now be well equipped for their task, recording the history of people with life limiting illnesses.

Lodge secretary John Burn (centre) this week handed over two cheques to hospice trustees (from left) Gretchen Hart, Brendon Adam, Jane Wright and Karen Hall.

The money came from the lodge’s Master’s fund and from the Midland Masonic Charitable Trust.

Hospice Mid Canterbury has two biographers who will be available to record the life stories of individuals who become part of its care network. These can be in either written or verbal form.

The lodge donation means they will have the equipment they need for their work, Mr Burn said.

Hospice trustee Mrs Wright said the biography writing service would be available to all people with a life limiting illness.

It involves the recording of a

person’s life story and this can be a therapeutic experience as it helps reinforce the value and significance of that person’s life journey, she said.

That story, told in the person’s

own words, is produced as a permanent memento for their family.

Rakaia River under the spotlight The Rakaia River will be under the spotlight when the Ashburton Zone Committee meets on Tuesday.

The committee will discuss Lake Coleridge storage and the Rakaia River National Water Conservation Order, which was amended in 2013 to enable TrustPower to release water from Lake Coleridge for irrigation when the river is low.

As a condition of the amendment two funds were created to enhance the cultural, ecological, and biological health and recreational opportunities within the Rakaia and Selwyn river catchments.

Water monitoring results on the Rakaia River will also be considered.

Conservation group BRaid, which aims to promote the protection, enhancement, and awareness of braided river ecosystems, will present its findings.

The Department of Conservation will report on predator control on the river. An annual predator control programme is proposed for several sites in the upper river valley to improve survival and breeding success for local shorebird populations breeding in the river bed.

A report on the braided river flagship project in the upper Rangitata and Rakaia catchments, which aims to identify key biodiversity values and threats, the activities already under way to address these, and the additional actions required, will also be considered.

Weed and pest control, fencing, restoration projects, and wetland protection have been undertaken as part of the project.

Prior to the meeting the committee will take a field trip to the hut settlement on the south bank of the Rakaia river mouth, where members will have an opportunity to discuss issues associated with the river mouth and visit a biodiversity project partially funded by the committee through Immediate Steps funding.

Farming and community visionary Eddie Glass – 1937 to 2015

Managing your water through another dry summer The irrigation season is now underway.

Predictions point to another hot, dry summer, so managing your water allocation well will be key.

There’s more to it than ramping up irrigation when it’s hot or near the end of the season. Irrigators need to start the season well, maintain performance and find out where you can save on operating costs.

ethven area farmer Eddie Glass was a farming and community visionary, lauded for his empathy and foresight.

The 78-year-old, who passed away in Ashburton earlier this month, built up a successful farming operation from nothing and it was through his actions that many a Canterbury farmer was able to get a new start after being forced off their land in the 1980s.

Mr Glass emigrated to New Zealand from Ireland at the age of 18, along with the rest of his family, after his parents saw better opportunities for their children overseas. He was the fifth child in a family of 11 and twin to fellow Methven farmer Derek Glass.

He and Derek had been top students at the Greenmount Agricultural College where they undertook a one-year training course at the age of 16.

After farm labouring in the Methven area for six years, Eddie and Derek bought 150 acres and then worked hard at contract fencing in order to be able to obtain stock for the property.

In 1976 he was awarded the Nuffield Scholarship, which involved six months of study in the United Kingdom in farm management.

Mr Glass was provincial president of Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury from 1987 to 1990, during a time recalled as the most difficult for farmers in living memory.

He fought for an independent mediation system for financiers and farmers, the latter of whom were being driven off their land by economic and political conditions, combined with drought.

The New Zealand Rural Trust was established and a government farm exit grant of up to $45,000 was established.

Mr Glass became chief negotiator for Canterbury in a process known as discounting, the intense negotiations which took place between farmers and their financiers at this time.

Night after night he would have stressed rural couples visiting to seek advice.

He attended a great number of discounting meetings and would have many farming and national leaders call on him for input.

Among farmers assisted by the $45,000 exit grant was 65-year-old Henry Studholme at Hororata.

He said this week that he would be forever indebted to Mr Glass for his empathy and foresight.

“We lost everything. I had my dogs and a few tools and a car, and that was it,” Mr Studholme said.

Forced off their Hororata farm, the grant enabled him and his young family to have a new start. Today Mr Studholme is director of the successful Prime Smoke.

He had never met Mr Glass, but wished he had.

“I would have loved to have said to him

[that] his vision and empathy throughout what was going on at the time meant so much to so many people.

“In our case it enabled us to get a new start in life.”

As tough as those times were, Mr Glass was opposed to suggested protest actions such as farmers blockading the Rakaia Bridge. He believed this would result in farmers losing the moral high ground; he preferred to win battles on a case-by-case basis.

Mr Glass was awarded an MBE in 1991 for services to New Zealand agriculture.

His commitment to the community continued and he was appointed to, and eventually chaired, Electricity Ashburton Limited through a time of major transition.

The local power board was turned into a co-operative and during Mr Glass’s 10 years as chairman, Electricity Ashburton had the lowest line charges in the country and paid $35 million in rebates to consumers.

He headed a team of five, who negotiated with Ngai Tahu to form a syndicate which bid for Coleridge Power Station and for a short time owned Highbank Power Station.

Through his contacts at a national level, he helped engineer a deal that saw TrustPower acquire both power stations, and as part of the deal ensured the Mid Canterbury community received major advantages, particularly for irrigation.

Mr Glass was also appointed to the board of New Zealand Post to provide a voice for protecting the rural mail service. And he played a pivotal role in efforts to save Ashburton Hospital, negotiating with the Canterbury District Health Board for retention of the facility.

Mr Glass was never happier than when working on his farm, which he had named Greenmount after the agricultural college he attended in Ireland.

His tenacious and uncompromising spirit was just as evident in this role, pitting himself against all that farming could throw at him.

As recently as two days before he died he was anxious to get out of hospital and back on the tractor.

During the last two years of his life his health caught up with him.

But when most would have considered it was time to relax, he took up cudgels against what he saw as foolishness inherent in the Trading Amongst Farmers share structure introduced by Fonterra, articulating concerns he had about the direction of the company.

Mr Glass served as an elder of St John’s Presbyterian Church in Methven for many years and family was of vital importance to him.

He was respected by his siblings, whose company he delighted in, and greatly valued the judgement of wife Valerie, appreciating her for what she had sacrificed in the making of their successful partnership throughout 52 years of marriage.

Mr Glass is survived by Valerie, and children Joanna, Sally and James, and eight grandchildren.

A talented, dedicated farmer Ian Totty – 1943 to 2015

I

an Totty, 72, was a talented and dedicated farmer who actively served his community throughout his life.

Born January 28, 1943, at Ashburton Hospital to Edward and Elizabeth Totty, he began his education at Bushside Primary School and later Methven Primary School.

He attained School Certificate at Timaru Boys before heading back to the family farm, where he worked with his father for five years running a mixed sheep, beef and dairy farm.

He showed an early aptitude for rearing jersey cows and began years of successfully showing pedigrees at Canterbury A&P shows.

With some practical skills behind him it was time to head off to Lincoln, where he earned a Diploma of Agriculture in 1966.

The following year he jumped at the opportunity to go on a Young Farmers exchange to Australia. Having enjoyed the experience, he became more involved in the organisation with roles including club, district and coun-

Ian Totty cil chairman, with three years on the national Young Farmers executive. He competed and was runner-up in the Skellerup Young Farmer of the Year in 1971.

In the 1970s he took over the family farm, Lawnhayes, which had been farmed by his father and grandfather, and gradually built it up to 467 hectares. It ran

romney and jersey studs, had breeding sows and a fattening operation with goats and bull beef, along with some grain. The property always had some dairy, but in 1996 it started the process of becoming a self-contained dairy farm milking 800 cows. Ian planted thousands of trees on the property.

After Young Farmers, his career in farming leadership continued at Federated Farmers, where he became local branch chairman, the Mid Canterbury dairy section chairman and spent two years on the section’s national executive.

He was a graduate of the Kellogg Rural Leadership Programme and spent 14 years as a director of Temuka and later Alpine Dairy Co-operative, was a director of the Ashburton Trading Society for nine years and a Justice of the Peace for over 40 years.

Having children brought the opportunity of new community roles. He and wife Kate, married for 34 years, had three daughters and one son. Ian chaired the Springburn School committee and spent some time on the Craighead School board of proprietors.

Ian was a Methven Lions Club member and Canterbury Grasshoppers member, and had been president of both organisations.

He brought just as much dedication to the later role as chairman of the Methven Care Trust fundraising committee and was a familiar face at public meetings.

Ian enjoyed golf, tramping and curling at the Staveley rinks when time allowed. He had helped establish the ice-skating rink

alongside his father and other Staveley families. He followed sports, particularly rugby, cricket and athletics. He enjoyed music and in earlier years was involved with the Methven Choral Society, and singing with the MSA men’s choir in Ashburton in more recent years.

He and Kate were keen travellers and had a taste for adventure, embarking upon many a trip with family and friends. In 1994 they took their four primary school-aged children on a 10-month overseas experience.

Ian worked on farms in Cornwall and Yorkshire, and he and his family travelled around the United Kingdom, Ireland and Europe in a campervan they bought.

He and Kate could indulge their love of tramping in some of the many trips, one of their highlights being a tramp in Tajikistan which took them over a 4200-metre pass.

The couple was preparing to retire in Methven and their son take over running of the farm, when Ian died suddenly in September. Ian is survived by wife Kate, daughters Charlotte, Hilary, Victoria, son John and granddaughter Amelia.

This began when former Head of English department, Christine McIndoe, began recruiting students with strong English skills to aid younger students before school to help improve their own individual work.

As well as reading mentors, the college offers peer support, which is a programme that teaches Year 12 students the skills to help Year 9s’ feel more relaxed at college and gives them an older student that

Being in the Red House Executive , I loved being a part of it this year.

Any challenges of being Year 13?

I think being in the exec along with juggling studies along with extra curricular activities, it has been hard to fit everything in and to concentrate on all of it.

Overall experience of Year 13 as a whole.

Work is difficult, but the whole experience of Year 13 is really fun, you have to jump out of your comfort zone and go for all the opportunities that are on offer here at college.

One thing you are looking forward to after Year 13 comes to an end?

As I’m going to university, I’m looking forward to being more independent and also to meet new people.

Any advice to Year 12s going into Year 13?

Definitely enjoy the year.

There are so many cool things you get to do as a Year 13, take the time to enjoy it as well as concentrating on school.

What would you say will be your biggest challenge once you no longer go to Ashburton College?

Being a shy person, I think stepping out of my comfort zone will be the most challenging because of not knowing many people at my university.

These two mentoring programmes have been around for many years and are aimed at making junior students fit in and feel relaxed in a college environment, while helping Year 12 students gain experience and social skills that will aid them in going out into the real world and preparing them for the responsibilities Year 13 will bring.

After running her own tutoring groups last year, Brooke Maslin has taken the initiative and decided to start up her own science mentoring programme.

“In my experience of being both a mentor and a mentee, all expe-

riences have been positive,” Miss Maslin said.

“Getting that one-on-one attention that students wouldn’t normally receive in class seems to be vital in their learning process, and being paired up with a senior student gives them a buddy to look up to and talk to.”

The goal of Miss Maslin’s programme is also to make everyone feel more comfortable asking questions and seeking help.

Miss Maslin said she hoped each student would see an improvement in their grades in class and have the confidence to even help others around them.

son and Kate Whiting, also believe in the philosophy of student mentoring, especially with Ashburton College being such a large school.

Junior students’ achievements were sometimes drowned out by others, especially if some of these achievements occurred outside of the college.

The pair wanted to find a way to encourage the students to keep representing the school well and make sure they know the school is aware that their efforts, big or small, do not go unnoticed.

The solution they came up with was to write a letter to each individual student that achieves something great, but would usu-

ally go unnoticed, and to send that letter out to them in the mail congratulating them and telling them to keep up the good work.

Their hopes were that this would show students and parents that the senior leaders did notice how hard the junior school worked and would encourage them to participate fully within the school while giving them the recognition they deserved.

Although this is a different method of student mentoring, I believe that this idea will help junior students stay active within the school and always strive to do their best.

By the senior school acknowledging their actions, they would

get a sense of involvement and achievement while hopefully wanting to continue doing great things.

I believe that student mentoring is the way of the future, and Ashburton College has already taken a step in the right direction.

Preparing senior students for the real world, while giving juniors that older person to look up to, mentoring is a positive experience for all involved.

By having students teach students we are levelling out the playing field and giving junior students a better chance at success by putting them in a comfortable environment with their peers.

It’s not nice to stereotype

BY ELISABETH BRAMHALL Stereotyping is a big thing in this generation.

I can’t walk around school without hearing someone say something stereotypical and I suspect that people don’t realise that they are actually stereotyping people.

For those who don’t know anything about stereotyping, it is when someone says something mean that can hurt people’s feelings. While stereotypes may refer to a specific sex, race, religion or country, often the perpetrators link various aspects of identity together.

Stereotypes are generalisations, or assumptions, which people make about the characteristics of all members of a group, based on an image (often wrong) about what people in that group are like.

For example, one study of stereotypes revealed that Americans are generally considered to be friendly, generous, and tolerant, but also arrogant, impatient, and domineering.

Asians, on the other hand, were expected to be shrewd and alert, but reserved.

Clearly, not all Americans are friendly and generous and not all Asians are shrewd.

If you assume you know what a person is like and don’t look at each person as an individual, you are likely to make errors in your estimates of a person’s character. The one thing that people never remember about calling people names is that, whatever you say to them it will stay with them forever and they repeat it in their mind over and over again and it can end up holding them back for years to come and imagine if the situation was reverse and you were the one being stereotyped, how would you feel.

How are you preparing yourself to be a leader of the school next year?

I am making sure I get involved in all things possible and putting myself out there so teachers can see that I am willing to step up to the plate. Also ensuring that I wear my uniform correctly and show pride.

Any tips for the Year 12s coming into next year?

As hard as it is, this year IS the year that really counts. Especially if you’re looking into university. Make sure you balance your commitments to your schoolwork so you don’t get overworked.

Are you looking forward to leadership camp?

Yes I am, as it will be a way for the possible exec committee members to bond and learn how to work together to make a great team for the year ahead.

Favourite moment of Year 12?

The ball. It was a night where the atmosphere was so exciting and the whole year group came together with such positive vibes.

For the people that don’t know, can you briefly explain leadership camp?

Where to now for health care?

Mid Canterbury is a district that is constantly changing, growing and adapting. Over the next few weeks, Guardian reporters will examine what the future has in store for sectors across the district – from education to agriculture and everything in between. This week the Guardian’s Caitlin Porter checks out what’s ahead for Mid Canterbury healthcare.

id Canterbury’s health sector has had a major overhaul in the past 30 or so years. From a well-serviced hospital and many local GPs, to a hospital that is partway through being completely refurbished and an ageing GP population, the Mid Canterbury health sector has had some ups and downs.

In recent years Ashburton Hospital has undergone some major changes – not only in terms of demolition and reconstruction, but management too.

The retirement of the Ashburton and Rural Health Services general manager Garth Bateup after 32 years at the helm, saw three new faces called to the forefront to temporarily replace him.

Now the Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) is working on a proposal for change that would see the number of junior doctors at Ashburton Hospital increase and replace six current positions with eight new roles.

Then, two years ago the hospital hit the headlines when it was announced an $8.7 million rebuild would take place to strengthen unsafe operating theatres and outpatients’ buildings.

It was originally scheduled to be finished by the end of last year, but multiple delays have pushed out its tentative completion date to mid-2016.

Looking ahead Ashburton GPs’ spokeswoman Dr Charlotte Cox

said health care within the district – particularly primary health care – is going to be “fantastic”.

“The primary health care workforce will feel highly valued and they will be supported by district health boards,” she said.

Being optimistic is crucial, she said. “It has to happen.”

Dr Cox said that in years to come she would like to see services returned to Ashburton Hospital and, eventually, the implementation of an emergency after-hours department.

“If our tourism promoters are going to push Mid Canterbury, then primary health care needs to be supported,” she said.

“If you don’t have good health provisions within the community, then you have nothing.”

Looking ahead there will be an increased number of GPs in town too, she said.

She envisions young people and their partners recognising what a great place Ashburton is to raise families and educate teenagers.

Not only will primary health transform, the resthome and aged-care industry will also see some rapid growth.

“Resthomes and retirement villages will be recognised as great business ventures and health care will be well catered for,” Dr Cox said.

Mental health services too will see “great improvements”, with targeted, specialised services available in the district for the people of Mid Canterbury.

However, in order for this growth to happen the community needs to rally.

One of the major issues that needs to be addressed – and also needs a community voice – is

after-hours rosters, she said.

There will have to be a push for making better and less demanding after-hours commitments for GPs. The current system is an “antiquated hangover of days gone by” with each GP working roughly 535 hours or three months a year, after hours, Dr Cox said.

“There needs to be fairer afterhours care, that is something that has to be worked through.”

Dr Cox said the archaic system was one of the reasons GPs won’t come to, or stay in, the district.

The CDHB needs to step up and provide better support for GPs too, she said.

“Junior doctors do the sums and they realise they are better off on a district health board contract than in primary care.”

“They need a far fairer and reasonable environment for GPs.”

To help push health care along in the district a Service Level Alliance has been formed.

The SLA is part of the Canterbury Clinical Network and is a type of integrated health alliance that consists of health care providers, leaders and professionals from around the district. These people will work together to aid the transformation of health services in Ashburton.

Facilitator Craig Watson said the SLA was founded to support the Ashburton District in receiving health care services that were sustainable and forward focused.

“An integration and collaboration approach between health services was vital in modelling a health service that meets the needs of the district,” Mr Watson said.

“This should, and likely will, look at how community, primary, secondary and tertiary health services can work smarter with the patient in the middle of the picture.”

However, for all these ideas to come to fruition and for health care to take a step forward, the people of Mid Canterbury need to let their voices be heard, Dr Cox said.

“People have to stand up and demand services. It’s all very well to talk about what we need but what we really need is people to be a little more vocal and demanding.

“We all know what is required and the current problems and solutions.

“Get up and start talking and start doing.”

In brief Drunk in charge An Oklahoma woman has been arrested after police say she drunkenly fell out of her pickup truck and her three-year-old son steered the vehicle to safety across a four-lane road. Taloa Foster, 33, was charged with child endangerment. Witnesses said the toddler grabbed the wheel and steered the truck across lanes of traffic after his mother tumbled out of vehicle. The boy’s twin brother was also in the truck at the time. The woman told police the boy had unbuckled his seat belt and she was trying to secure him when she fell out of the vehicle.

Racist motive behind attack The attacker who stabbed two people to death at a school in Sweden before being shot and killed by police had a racist motive, police said yesterday.

Police labelled the stabbing in the industrial town of Trollhattan a hate crime based on discoveries they made when searching the perpetrator’s home, the way he dressed, his behaviour at the scene and the way he selected his victims.

“All together, this gives a picture that the perpetrator had a racist motive when he committed the crimes at Kronan school,” police said in a statement.

A 21-year-old masked man, who has not been identified by police, entered the school in

southern Sweden and stabbed four people, two of whom died, before he was shot by police. He later died of his wounds.

The attack stunned Sweden, where violent crime is relatively rare, though there has been a recent spate of arson attacks on asylum centres in the south of the country as the influx of migrants has surged.

Immigration officials estimate that some 190,000 will arrive this year, second only to Germany in western Europe.

“This is a black day for Sweden,” Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said of the attack, the deadliest ever to target a school in Sweden. “It is a tragedy that hits the entire country.”

According to Swedish media, the assailant posed for photos with students before beginning his deadly rampage in the halls of the Kronan school in Trollhattan, which has a large immigrant community. A majority of the students at Kronan are foreignborn.

Many students thought the attacker was playing a Halloween prank. News outlets posted a photo of a black-clad man they identified as the attacker wearing a military-style helmet and a black mask with a sword in his hand.

Panicked students fled the school, as police and ambulances rushed in. They found a dead male teacher and three people

seriously wounded — two boys, aged 11 and 15, and another male teacher. One of the students later died of his wounds.

None of the victims have been identified.

Officers fired two shots, hitting the attacker with a bullet in the lower chest, and he later died at a hospital.

Police said the assailant had entered the school through a cafe in its lobby that is open to the public, then knocked on the doors of two classrooms, stabbing his victims.

Dozens of people gathered quietly to pay their respects outside the school, whose roughly 400 pupils range in age from preschool to high school.

Bomb blasts kill at least 18 at mosque Twin bomb blasts have killed at least 18 people at a northeast Nigerian mosque crowded with people observing pre-dawn prayers yesterday, a self-defence fighter at the scene said.

The fighter was among rescuers who evacuated bodies while troops cordoned off the zone.

It is the latest in a string of suicide bombings blamed on Boko Haram Islamic extremists who have indiscriminately killed Christians and Muslims they ac-

cuse of not following their radical version of Shariah law.

The fighter said there appeared to be only one suicide bomber though “we all heard two explosions” around 5am in a mosque in the Jiddari Polo area of Maiduguri, the biggest city in the north-east and the birthplace of Boko Haram.

Nigeria’s homegrown Islamic extremist group has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group and wants to recreate an

Islamic caliphate over a swath of West Africa that sprawls across Nigeria’s border into neighbouring Chad, Cameroon and Niger.

Suicide bombers in all four countries have killed hundreds in recent months. The 6-year-old uprising has left an estimated 20,000 people dead and forced 2.3 million from their homes.

A promised offensive by a multi-national army of troops from Nigeria and its neighbours has been delayed for months with-

out explanation.

Nigeria’s police chief warned this week that Boko Haram is building bombs in iPads, laptops and cellphones and leaving them for people to pick up.

Inspector Gen. Solomon E. Arase issued the warning while announcing five suspects were arraigned Thursday in Abuja High Court in connection with twin bombings in Nigeria’s capital that killed 15 people on October 2.

Forty-two people, mostly elderly tourists starting off on a day trip, were killed yesterday when a bus and truck collided on a country road in wine country in southwest France, officials said. The cause and circumstances of the crash — near the village of Puisseguin, about 50 kilometres east of Bordeaux — were unclear. Scores of emergency workers rushed to the scene. The death toll may have been so unusually high because the bus caught fire, an official with the national gendarme service said. French President Francois Hollande, on a visit to Greece, said the government was “totally mobilised” to help after what he called a “terrible accident.”

Drug tunnel found Authorities seized 12 tons of marijuana and arrested 22 people after discovering one of the longest cross-border tunnels between the US and Mexico, officials said yesterday. The passage connecting warehouses in San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico, was about 730 metres long and 10 metres deep. It was lit, ventilated and equipped with a rail system — hallmarks of the most sophisticated tunnels found along the border. Police stings resulted in six arrests in San Diego and 16 in Mexico.

Gun laws only affect the good guys Sue Newman

uying a firearm online without a firearms’ licence might not be a smart move, but thanks to the efforts of a television journalist, what is probably a common practice might now be stopped.

To prove a point, Heather du Plessis-Allan bought a .22 rifle using a fake name and a fake gun licence. The money changed hands and she became a firearms’ owner, sans firearms’ licence. The exercise backfired, however, and she found herself under fire from several quarters because technically she’d broken the law.

But she did prove the point she set out to prove and the end result has been exactly what she hoped it would be – a loophole in the gun-buying laws was identified and police are now moving to seal it shut.

The exposure of deficiencies in our gun laws has come at a good time, with the number of people applying for gun licences in the past year going from 21,000 to 34,000. The number of gun licence holders is staggering, around 230,000 and numbers are growing.

Police statistics indicate there are more than 1.5 million guns in New Zealand and that’s only the ones they know about. How much greater would that number be if the owners without licences were added?

We’re an outdoor nation and for many that means hunting is their top recreational activity.

Hunters by and large are responsible owners, they understand the power of the weapons they own and they treat them with respect.

It’s the others, the unlicensed owners, that are the concern.

Du Plessis-Allan has shown how easy it is to obtain a firearm fraudulently. If she can do it, how many thousands of others have done exactly the same?

Tighter rules around gun purchases, unfortunately, are unlikely to touch the gun underworld that obviously exists, one where contacts and cash can buy whatever you want.

The changed rules simply make it harder for the good guys.

It will take a lot more fire power to reduce the number of illegal firearms in unlicensed hands.

Mr fix-it farmer and the short tale of a rat A

rodent caused chaos in our household this week and it was all down to the Farmer and his “I can fix anything” attitude.

You see we have been without our dishwasher for a good month now. The first dish drawer stopped working six months ago while the second broke down more recently.

Now I’m a patient woman – I have to be, living with the Farmer, but after months and months of having to wash dishes I finally lost patience and threatened to call in the repair man.

Immediately he was all action and I arrived home to find the dishwasher in bits on the kitchen floor and no cold water available for my sink.

“It’s alright love,” he assured me when I scanned the floor in dismay.

“A rat’s eaten through the hoses. I’ll just have to get some replacements.”

I gritted my teeth, remembering when we did up the kitchen and a hole in the wall behind the dishwasher the Farmer was going to fill to stop rodents coming in.

Somehow though, that got put on the backburner.

A week later and the dishwasher was still in bits on the floor, but still he assured me the parts would be coming

soon. “When?” I demanded.

“Aaaah,” he smiled. “That’ll be when I next get into town love.”

And so another week passed, dishes stacked up even though I spent hours every day washing them and the farmer sidled in and out, making hollow promises of it being fixed soon.

So you can imagine the consternation earlier this week when the girls and I were happily watching telly after dinner and a rat slunk in front of us slowly across our floor.

Amid shrieks, screams and the tiny terror shouting “out, out” the Farmer gingerly entered the room asking what the fuss was about.

Upon sighting the rat he tried to look heroic as he picked up the fire poker and proceeded cautiously to the table where the rat was crouched.

The tongue can do great good and evil

ecently, at the Sunday service, we read from Chapter Three of James’ epistle to the 12 tribes of Israel.

One commentator asks the question of this passage, “Can the tongue be tamed?”

Various versions of the Bible have different titles for the section of the epistle, (verses 1 – 9). In NIV the title is Taming the Tongue, while the new King James version refers to it as The Untameable Tongue.

The passage compares the tongue with the bit in the horse’s mouth, which can turn the

animal, with the ship’s rudder, which though small movements, can control a large ship, and with a small fire, which can burn a whole forest.

The tongue, though small, can do good and evil.

James reminds us that we all stumble at times, if we are never at fault we are perfect and able to keep the body in check.

We know that none of us are perfect.

Can any of us say that we have never said something that we regret almost as soon as we have spoken?

This message is as relevant today as when it was written.

We are constantly hearing of bullying and intimidation, at work, at school and at home.

The word today may be both spoken and written.

We need to be aware of the potential damage done by a loose tongue.

time to time, but we should endeavour to think before making hurtful comments to others.

■ Place a rice paper wrapper in a bowl of hot water for about 30 seconds or until it has softened enough to roll. Pat dry and place on a flat surface.

■ Place some of the chicken, cucumber, carrot, lettuce, mint, coriander and spring onion in a line down the centre of the rice paper wrapper, leaving about 3cm

at one end. Fold up the wrapper at this end. Roll up tightly to enclose the filling, leaving the filling exposed at the top. Repeat with remaining rice paper wrappers and ingredients.

Lewis eyes podium finish

Lewis Dray is gunning for a top three finish in the 250cc production class at the New Zealand Superbike Championships in January and March, after placing fourth earlier this year on his 125cc GP bike.

The 19-year-old retained the 150cc title at the Battle of the Buckets held in Christchurch last Saturday, and will next be in action in round three of the King of Ruapuna event in four weeks’ time.

It will be a busy weekend for Mid Canterbury’s junior tennis players in the Ashburton Trust Junior Open and the Junior Masters Top 8 Finals in Christchurch.

More than 130 players will be competing at the Junior Open in Ashburton, and 15 of those will be from Mid Canterbury, while local starlet Tessa McCann battles to qualify for the Australian Individual and Teams Nationals in

Melbourne in December.

Mid Canterbury coach Chris Anderson said she expects a high level of tennis at the Trust Ashburton Tennis Centre this weekend.

“It’s a very good turnout, it’s more than last year, so it’s great

considering the junior masters are being played in Christchurch,” she said.

“When I look at some of the names competing, from here and elsewhere, there are some really good players.”

Ashburton College’s 1st XI will host Riccarton High School at the Domain today in day two of two with College leading the visitors by 101 with one wicket remaining.

College did not let a three hour rain delay affect their focus last Saturday, as they ripped through Riccarton’s top order after winning the toss and electing to field.

Sam Hall’s second ball saw Tim Bridgeman caught behind, before Josh Buchanan removed Jessy Daly.

Ben Bridgeman’s wicket was next to fall before Buchanan found off stump again to have the visitors four down.

The Hall-Zach Naldrett combination then removed Lehman Taleni for a duck.

The sixth wicket proved the most stubborn as James Rennie (27) top scored to move the score on to 48 before being dismissed by Punselie.

Twelve runs later, Punselie had another breakthrough, thanks to the sharp reactions of Josh Gill at slip, to remove Ethan Ng for 5.

Punselie then dismissed Max Con-

nolly for a golden duck, before Will Graham and Punselie mopped up the tailenders to leave Riccarton all out for 72.

Ashburton College’s openers, Michael Burton and Josh Gill, batted solidly to post 50 for the first wicket before Burton was dismissed.

Wickets fell in clusters with Gill being bowled without any increase in the score.

Tom Ravenscroft (9), Kieran Hunt (3) and Zach Naldrett (0) all failed to deliver, leaving College 5 down for 65.

Liam O’Connor and Gareth Hunt consolidated the innings, the duo were stoic in defence and punished anything wide before Hunt was dismissed with the partnership one run shy of 100.

A number of wickets then fell leaving Josh Buchanan to face one ball, the last of the day, and he smashed it straight over the bowler for a four as College finished the first session of the contest on 101 ahead, with the last wicket still intact.

College will aim to bowl Riccarton out again today for an outright win, the action will begin at 10.30am.

am Watt is one of a dying breed, a multi-sport athlete, nearing the peak of his powers, achieving at national and representative level.

Watt donned the green and gold jersey of Mid Canterbury six times this season, missing two matches to fight, and win, national and Canterbury heavyweight titles.

The Papanui Boxing Club fighter took a unanimous points decision over Waikato’s Frank Masoe to retain the Dewar Shield and national heavyweight title at the national championships held in Invercargill a fortnight ago.

Following his shock split-decision win over Commonwealth Games silver medallist David Light last year, Watt’s name now features twice on the shield, alongside the likes of David Tua, Shane Cameron and former All Black Kevin Skinner.

The former Christchurch Boys’ First XV flanker has two national, six Canterbury and five South Island Golden Gloves boxing titles to his name, and is now eyeing the Asia and Oceania Olympic Qualifiers in China.

To achieve his goal of representing New Zealand, the 23-year-old will have to upset another Commonwealth Games medallist, but this time, a gold medallist.

Since winning the light-heavyweight gold medal in Glasgow, David Nyika has stepped up to the 91kg category, and despite Watt being national amateur champion, Nyika is ranked number one.

“That’s the disappointing thing, that he’s ranked ahead of me although we’ve never fought.

“I feel I deserve to get a crack,” said Watt.

Watt, who is trained by veteran coach Mike Pimley, is hoping a fight with Nyika can be organised for early next year.

“I know I’m a massive underdog.

“He’s a fulltime athlete, but that was the same when I fought David Light.

“I’ll give it a crack and if he wins, I’ll shake his hand and let him know that I hope he qualifies for Rio.”

49ers drop Hayne Jarryd Hayne has been dropped by the San Francisco 49ers for their crucial NFL clash with the Seattle Seahawks. There was speculation Hayne might be left out of the 46-man squad to play the Seahawks after he fumbled his third punt return in six games and didn’t touch the ball as a running back in last weekend’s win against Baltimore. The 49ers confirmed Hayne’s axing when they announced, 90 minutes before the game, the Australian was made “inactive”.

Injured Pye tops practice at Gold Coast Ford driver Scott Pye has overcome a painful broken rib to post the fastest lap in opening practice at the Gold Coast V8 Supercars event yesterday.

Pye, who broke his rib in a heavy collision with a wall at Mount Panorama during the Bathurst 1000 earlier this month, clocked a one minute and 11.7073 second lap on the 2.98km Surfers Paradise street circuit.

Australian Daniel Ricciardo said yesterday that he felt confident he will be on the Formula One grid in a Red Bull car next year, despite the team’s lack of a confirmed engines supplier.

He said that he is more concerned with ensuring that he is at the wheel of a competitive and well-designed car than he is by the team’s ongoing struggle to secure excellent power units.

“Not much has changed to be honest,” he said ahead of this weekend’s US Grand Prix. “We are still not really confirmed with anything yet, but I am confident we will be racing. - AFP

Bathurst in the past It was the big talking point of the Bathurst 1000 but Red Bull Racing’s Roland Dane says all is well between him and star V8 driver Jamie Whincup. Team owner Dane was livid after Whincup ignored orders to pit at Bathurst and passed a safety car, relegating him from second to the back of the field with 20 laps left in the great race and he finished 18th. Dane says while there was obvious disappointment, he and Whincup’s engineer Mark Dutton had cleared the air and were moving forward at this weekend’s Gold Coast 600.

Clash of the titans

BY PATRICK MCKENDRY One has remained at the top of his game despite the ravages of time and the often foul intentions of the opposition, while the other has stayed there despite a neardeath experience and a disregard for his on-field safety.

These are just a few reasons why the battle between All Blacks skipper Richie McCaw and Springboks vice-captain Schalk Burger will be as compelling as it is significant to the fortunes of their respective teams in tomorrow’s World Cup semi-final at Twickenham.

Both are great leaders and great flankers and both are cut from the same cloth in terms of their toughness and the way they conduct themselves off the pitch.

Both are inspirational in their own way; McCaw through his utter commitment to the cause and his willingness to dig deeper than anyone else for victory, and Burger for his dedication to his teammates and his ability to switch off and enjoy life to the fullest once he’s off the field.

As his coach Heyneke Meyer said this week, Burger’s presence in the team should be an inspiration in itself following his near-fatal brush with bacterial meningitis two years ago, an illness which required a six-week stay in hospital.

“My wife phoned family and friends and said, ‘Listen, I think he is on his way out’,” Burger told the Daily Mail last month.

“I didn’t open my eyes for five days. I was there but sometimes it felt like I was going to stop fighting and then I would go, I’d be gone.

someone was putting a knife straight into my head.”

The problems started for Burger in early 2013 when he found a lump in his left leg. After a hospital scan a cyst was found in his back which was depressing his spinal cord. After an operation infection set in which contaminated his spinal cord.

As the 32-year-old father-of-two said: “This was the scary part.”

Burger added: “I went in weighing 110kg and things just changed like that.

“I had my first operation and then I was in dire straits - I knew I was in trouble. It was more scary for everyone around.

“I was battling heartbeat by heartbeat just trying to get through and that lasted for five days. I had another four operations to get rid of the cyst and pressure on my spinal cord and came out of hospital weighing 90kg.”

The blond-headed flanker, who has good friends among the All Blacks, including fellow loose forwards Jerome Kaino and Kieran Read, had to teach himself to walk again but last year was recalled to the Springboks and quickly found the destructive form which has made him one of the most feared flankers in world rugby.

The 84-test veteran credits his laidback attitude towards rugby in part to his illness, saying it helped put his life in perspective.

“The great thing about Schalk is that I still can’t work him out. He’s an amazing human being,” Boks coach Meyer said.

“If you just check what he’s been through, for him just to be alive is great, that’s why he just enjoys life.

“I’m a little bit more uptight at times and Fourie [du Preez], the captain, is as well, but Schalk is more relaxed and I think you need that balance.

“Even before we go into battle he’s still fully smiling and I think he’s not ready and then when he goes on the field he’s a different human being.

“You need that, you need characters in the team and he’s one of them.”

McCaw, 34, and with 146 test caps, is more clinical in his approach to the game than the passionate Burger, but that ruthless efficiency allows him to respond to pressure and makes him so important to the All Blacks.

“He’s become one of the great leaders of world rugby, especially under pressure,” coach Steve Hansen said. “He’s well supported

by Kieran [Read] and the rest of the leadership group.

“There’s a lot of mental fortitude there. We’ve been through some tough times and had success in those tough times and that breeds I guess a deep-seated self belief.”

Dan Carter, who has played alongside McCaw for many years with the All Blacks and Crusaders, said: “He’s a fantastic player both on and off the field.

“He’s a real inspiration and a player who really motivates this side first of all because of his actions.

“At training he’s always first out there and last to leave. His work ethic is fantastic.

“Also, out on the field he’s the first guy to put his body on the line.

“When you’re working so closely with him that inspires you to do the same ... I feel pretty honoured to play alongside such a legend of the game.”

Sharp end of the tournament arrives W

here does one begin?

The Rugby World Cup, which appeared to be percolating along quite nicely, with plenty to occupy everybody’s attention, has suddenly exploded into life as the knockout stage arrives, with every team faced with the ‘go hard or go home’ scenario.

And who’s gone home?

Oh, everyone, that’s every single team, north of the equator, leaving the Rugby Championship teams to fight it out to see who is going to have an extra seat on their plane for William Webb Ellis.

England, the alleged ‘home’ of rugby, didn’t even make it to the exciting stage.

They exited their own tournament after leaving no stone unturned, spending millions of pounds and organising the best of the best of everything for their players and coaching staff, and now they’re a beaten rabble, tearing themselves apart internally as the post-mortems become more and more vicious.

Excellent viewing, as if the on-

field action wasn’t enough.

A giant part of their problem appears to be that the English system is based on the same lines as the English Premier League, a fantastic football competition, best in the world (although we’re not allowed to watch it on Sky) but their national team remains rubbish.

The clubs have all the money and all the power, whereas our system, starting right from the littlies at school, is aimed fair and square at producing All Blacks, and the result of that programme showed last weekend, when we went quite well against the French.

There’s drama, truckloads of it.

The World Rugby organisers came up with a masterstroke when they publicly skewered referee Craig Joubert after his calamitous mistake which meant the Aussies stayed alive (only to become a nice steak dinner for the Argies this weekend).

While all the vitriol worldwide had been aimed squarely at

Joubert, whose career at the top is probably over, now World Rugby is taking the heat for throwing one of their own to those very wolves who were ripping the unfortunate ref to shreds all last week.

It’s either the aforementioned masterstroke - or perhaps their silliest public pronouncement ever, you decide.

Two brilliant pieces of television to comment on.

The first, from sport’s best funny man James McOnie, is entitled Fat Bottomed Props, and out of all the good stuff he’s done, this may well be be his tour de force.

The other, which you’ll probably see on some TV ad soon, involves a rugby coach showing his young charges (8 to 10-year-olds)

how to tackle, repeatedly getting them to hurl themselves at one of the coach’s mates covered head to foot in full tackle garb.

After half an hour’s hard slog, the tackle dummy removes his headgear to reveal - Dan Carter.

The looks on the kids’ faces is absolutely, utterly priceless.

I’m sure you can catch both clips on YouTube, everything else in the entire universe is on there.

Staying with television, I’ve heard an awful lot of folks saying for months they were thinking seriously of ditching Sky after the Rugby World Cup, citing increasing fees while putting up with lesser quantity and quality.

Now these folks find that Prime is broadcasting the Rugby World Cup’s big games for free, and LIVE. Yes, the same time as Sky subscribers are paying good money for.

If they were angry before, they might be upgrading themselves to enraged and irate, and Sky will definitely be hearing from them just after the final whistle on November 1.

Jonah an inspiration South African flyer Bryan Habana goes into tomorrow’s Rugby World Cup semi-final against New Zealand at Twickenham just one try short of breaking Jonah Lomu’s tournament record of 15. Habana, who as a fan watched powerhouse Lomu rampage his way round rugby fields in South Africa at the 1995 World Cup, cannot get over being talked about in the same breath as the legend. “For me he is an inspiration. In 1995, for me in that World Cup to see a guy like Jonah Lomu demolish England, he went on to become a global superstar. I will never forget. I was there targeting signatures,” said Habana. - AFP

Pocock ‘vital’ Former captain Stirling Mortlock has tackled the elephant in the Australian room, declaring the Wallabies can’t win the Rugby World Cup without David Pocock. Wallabies coach Michael Cheika is refusing to publicly rate Australia’s prospects without their inspirational back-rower, who remains only an outside chance of recovering from a calf injury in time for the semi-final against Argentina at Twickenham.

Mortlock, though, not only doubts Australia’s ability to win without Pocock but also fears the No.8 is no chance of taking on the Pumas.

Sonny Bill Creevy Argentina’s answer to All Blacks powerhouse Sonny Bill Williams has Australia on high alert over their offloading ability ahead of Monday’s World Cup semi-final. Argentina captain Agustin Creevy remains in doubt for the clash with a leg injury but he poses a major threat to Australia after drawing comparisons with the dynamic dual international. Williams is built like an Adonis, while Creevy has the David Boon physique, but the 30-year-old hooker has earned the nickname “Sonny Bill Creevy” due to his ability to draw defenders and get offloads away - much like Williams, who developed his freakish talents in the NRL. - AFP

‘Ignore mind games’ Heyneke Meyer’s lavish praise heaped on the All Blacks this week has been described as mind games by his opposite Steve Hansen, who has told his team to take no notice.

Springboks coach Meyer has called the All Blacks the best team to ever play the game, adding his players would have to play the match of their lives if they were to be successful in Sunday’s World Cup semi-final.

Hansen, a coach well versed in mind games and the use of the media as a motivational tool, responded to his friend’s comments with a knowing smile. “He’s a cunning wee devil is Heyneke,” he said. “He’s been praising us all week and whilst I know he means some of it, at the same time they are getting ready to rip our heads off.”

Drop goals in ABs’ arsenal

By GreGor Paul It has been hard to know whether there is a World Cup in full flow as there hasn’t yet been a glut of drop goals.

But there could be in the remaining three games - and the All Blacks are fully prepared to lead the charge if they feel it’s required.

The drop goal hasn’t typically been part of the All Black repertoire.

Even at World Cups, where the proliferation of dropped goals is marked, the All Blacks have been almost steadfastly resistant to the idea they should join the craze.

In 2007 there were four million people crying out for them to take their time; rumble the ball towards the posts and then have someone stand deep and snap at the posts.

There were 12 long minutes in that quarter-final where the All Blacks didn’t appear to even have the first idea that they were allowed to win with a field goal.

They did everything to avoid setting up for one - until the final seconds that is when Luke McAlister fired one opportunistically and hopelessly from just inside his half.

“We have worked on it at training and in various positions. We have plans in place to execute it but as I say, we just haven’t needed to do it.”

If previous games between New Zealand and South Africa prove to be an accurate guide, then there is every chance the semi-final clash at Twickenham will go to the wire with a only a few points separating the teams.

That’s when the dropped goal will be critical.

It’s often seen as a play to be

Carter has had one attempted dropped goal that was charged down against France.

It suggests the dropped goal hasn’t featured in the All Blacks’ thinking or training.

Not so says Carter.

“It is something we have worked a lot on in training,” he says.

“We have seen in the past that dropped goals historically have been a big part of Rugby World Cup play.

“We just haven’t been in a position where we have needed it.

But the All Blacks may surprise this time and use the dropped goal earlier in the game to help apply scoreboard pressure.

Ideally, the All Blacks would like to build a big enough lead to eliminate the need to be scrambling points in the closing stages.

But they accept against an opponent such as South Africa, that luxury may be denied them.

So if it comes down to landing a pressure kick, how does Carter feel the All Blacks will cope?

Is it an advantage that halfback Aaron Smith can pass the ball so far and with such speed and accuracy?

“You don’t want to be too far back,” says Carter. “The closer you are to the posts ... [the easier it is]. The challenging thing for the dropped goal is the timing of the whole thing.

“Making sure everyone is on the same page and you are not making it so obvious that it’s the play you are going for.

“We have systems in place and to be honest it doesn’t matter what halfback is in the field for us as they are all fantastic passers.” - NZME

He epitomises the values this squad believes it is built on. He’s shown incredible perseverance to finally nail a starting spot and connected to that is a deep loyalty to the jersey, having turned down a lucrative overseas offer in 2013 to stay in New Zealand for four years. What’s most impressive, though, is that he has become a global superstar on the field while remaining the same person off it. In a back three loaded with speed and finishing power, it’s Smith who consistently provides the balance.

The bank said lamb had been the “quiet achiever” in recent months.

“The price of a 17.5kg lamb has snuck back over the $6 per kg benchmark,” it said. “Indeed, lamb prices have headed higher with little fanfare over recent months,” it said.

“Moreover, after being behind year ago prices all year, prices now sit marginally higher,” the bank said.

In addition, prices in New Zealand dollar terms have lifted despite the strong Kiwi dollar.

While the lamb price index has lifted around 5 per cent in

NZ dollar terms, it is over 12 per cent higher in British pound terms.

“This strength bodes well heading into the important Christmas shipment period,” ASB said.

“We expect lamb and mutton prices to firm over this period mainly on the back of low New Zealand lamb and mutton production,” it said.

Beef and Lamb’s recent forecasts showed decent falls in the lamb crop and mutton slaughter this season.

However, the bank said the el Nino threat loomed large for the sheep sector.

“Another dry summer is likely to take the wind out of the sector’s sales much like it did last summer,” it said.

The Auckland housing market remains a risk to the New Zealand economy, Finance Minister Bill English says.

“The longer it goes rising at 20 to 25 per cent a year, the more of a risk it becomes,” the minister told reporters yesterday.

“You’ve got the median house prices about nine times the average income. That can’t last.”

Mr English made the comments after making a speech to a social housing conference in Wellington.

In the speech, he said the Government would come under huge political pressure to provide assistance to middle-income families if interest rates rose.

“As households get a bit stretched in meeting the rising cost of housing, it inevitably creates pressure for government to lift the cash transfer programmes.”

He said that in the mid-2000s, interest rates of 8 to 9 per cent
