Pride in paint pays off

“They day I stop enjoying what I’m doing and do it solely for money rather than the passion is the day I’ll retire,” Craig Bishop says.

On the eve of 20 years in business, The Finishing Company has celebrated early after receiving numerous national awards in Rotoroa earlier this month.

Owner-manager Craig Bishop has been in the industry since 1983 and started The Finishing Company in 2000 but this year was the first time he entered the awards – not for the prestige, but for the judgement.

“It was not about the accolades or the trophies, I like outside audits,” Bishop said.

“It was about how other people, totally independent, judged what we do.

“It was a measuring stick for after 20 years in business, are we on the right track.”

The judgement they received was a big tick of approval.

At the National Awards for New Zealand Master Painters’ Association, The Finishing Company received Highly Achieved Residential Wallpapering, Gold Award for character home repainting, Gold Award for character home re-wallpapering, Gold Awards for new residence interior painting over $25,000, exterior new residence over $25,000, and were the overall winner of new residence exterior over $25,000.

Bishop is passionate about what he does and takes great pride in his company’s performance so was understandably thrilled with the results.

Being a company in a smaller community, Bishop said, meant they cannot afford to be mediocre.

“You are only as good as your last job.

“We always have to do a good job.

“Do a good job and 10 people know, but do a bad job and 100 people find out.”

Bishop has been in the industry since 1983 when he started out as an apprentice with Bradford’s, trained by Allan Wilkinson, and was a high achiever in receiving second best marks in the country in his trade certificate in 1987.

He worked at Bradford’s until November 2000 when he branched out on his own, starting The Finishing Company with his wife Sonia.

“In 2004 we started to get really busy, but there wasn’t the tradesmen around.”

That’s when Bishop ended up taking over another Ashburton firm, TH and TN Shaw, and shifted The Finishing Company to the site on Grey Street where

they are still based 16 years later.

In his 37 years as a painter, a lot has changed in the industry.

“The whole industry has evolved.

“There were no water blasters when I started, so you cleaned roofs down with wire brushes and garden hoses.”

They now also have acrylic fillers, joinery is pre-finished, access to better tools and products, he said.

“It used to take us three weeks to paint a normal house and now we can go in and out in eight to 10 days.

Health and safety has also come a long way, with better products and safety equipment.

The industry has come a long way and after all these years, Bishop still enjoys his work.

Fine Lion restaurant counting down to opening

Bookings are flooding in for Ashburton’s newest restaurant.

The Fine Lion is not set to open until mid-November, but wouldbe diners and tipplers are already keen.

Owner operators Matt and Belinda Fine, who are well known through their current and previous successful Ashburton hospitality enterprises of Kelly’s Café Bar and Robbie’s respectively, said they had been busy taking bookings for their new venture, and this had included a number of Christmas parties.

They are looking forward to operating the first-floor restaurant in the new Murney Main building on East Street, where tradies are busy making sure the interior is as magnificent as the restaurant’s designers have planned it to be.

There will be a luxurious vibe complete with intricate and expansive tiling on the floor and walls, as well as wooden floorboards, velvet seating, brass trimming and plants. The theme is post-colonial African, and has been dreamt up by the same designers who are responsible for the stunning interiors which have been so well-received at Christchurch’s bars and restaurants on The Terrace.

Perhaps the most striking feature will be its large balcony, which altogether forms about one-third of the overall restaurant bar public space.

“It’s going to be pretty cool when it’s done,” said Matt as he visited the worksite with the Guardian this week.

He said the restaurant would offer casual and relaxed dining, and would not be expensive.

He and Belinda enjoyed being in hospitality, although it had once been an industry they had never really seen themselves going into.

They had been at Kelly’s for about five years, and prior to that brought the Robbie’s franchise to Ashburton with their business partners at the time, building the restaurant which is today the Phat Duck.

til then,” Matt said.

Matt had been a car salesman while Belinda worked in administration.

Hospitality had since turned into a fun and rewarding career.

“It’s obviously what we are meant to do because we are still in it,” Matt said.

The couple are long-time Ashburtonians, and both used to visit the former Coach Wheels on the first floor of the former Somerset building opposite Murney Main.

They have fond memories of the restaurant, and are excited to bring first-floor dining back to Ashburton on the very same street corner.

“I used to go there as a kid, it was great,” Matt said.

“Everyone would go there for tea before the school balls,” Belinda said.

Access to good health care top priority

Health professionals in the Ashburton District are committed to ensuring every patient has a GP and good access to health care.

While a person may be told the patient list was full when they contacted a local practice to enrol, they would be helped to find another general practice team that would suit their needs, says Sue Fowlie, Rakaia Medical Practice clinical director.

Fowlie is also a member of the Canterbury Clinical Network Alliance Leadership team and said ensuring people and their families were able to access the care they needed, when they needed it was a top priority for general practice teams and the wider health care community in Ashburton.

“Health providers across the Ashburton region have worked together with their community to ensure that it’s easy for patients to enrol with a new practice or transfer between practices,” she said.

If a practice was not taking new patients, that decision was made in the best interests of current patients, staff and potential new patients, Fowlie said.

“It is simply not safe for a practice to have too many patients to care for, but

there will always be another option, which can be worked out with the patient.”

A patient also had a right to change their GP or their practice if they wanted and they should not feel uncomfortable doing this, she said.

“GPs just want to know that people are getting the care they need and won’t be offended if you transfer to another doctor. It’s all about the patient feeling comfortable and not delaying their care.”

A number of changes had also been made in practices where appointments were now not always face-to- face.

Many were offering appointments by telephone and/or video, and that meant often patients did not need to actually need to be on site, Fowlie said.

Patients contacting their practices would now be offered the range of options that best suited their needs, such as just a prescription only, that could be sent straight to the pharmacy. And

there were issues that could be safely checked via a video or phone consult, she said.

“The response to the variety of ways you can receive care has been overwhelmingly positive, as it means patients can save time as they don’t always need to travel and take time away from work and their whanau.”

If an appointment was for a person who had possible Covid-19 symptoms, precautions can be put in place, such as PPE and meeting the patient at a different entrance to the practice.

Care is always available around the clock, Fowlie said, and the first step if you need health advice should always be to call your general practice team. The call would be answered 24/7.

“Sometimes the call may take a little while to answer, but stay on the line.

Some practices have extended hours, so if you call late in the day, you may be able to talk to your own practice team. Otherwise it will be diverted and answered by a health professional who will offer advice and suggest where to get care if appropriate.”

The process supporting patients to transfer and enrol with general practices in Ashburton has been created through the Ashburton Service Level Agreement, a group of health professionals.

Ready for a bucking good time

Home-grown horses will be the stars of the show at the Methven Rodeo on Sunday.

After weeks of living the good life, the broncos have made their annual pilgrimage to take centre stage.

The Methven Rodeo Committee has always had its own broncos, but four years ago they made an investment in bolstering their numbers.

Methven Bronc String manager Simon Ward said they purchased some horses from the late Colin Booth and started contracting them out to other events.

“Since then we have brought the string up and chipped away at them,” Ward said.

The broncos only compete a few times a year and the rest of the time they live in luxury, grazing with some of the most picturesque views New Zealand has to offer, Ward said.

“We own a couple of stock crates that we use to put them on the back of a Wareings stock truck and cart them up the road the day before an event.

“We buck them and bring them back home to their grazing block the next day.

“These horses are not like saddle horses that are ridden a few times a week they are only ridden four or five times a year and spend the rest of their time on the hill living the good life.”

The horses have been contracted out to rodeos at Wanaka, Mataura, Waikouaiti, Waimate and the Canterbury rodeo in Christchurch.

Methven currently has 32 broncos, and they will all get a run, but unlike many of the human competitors who will contest the Winchester rodeo on Saturday, they will only run at Methven this weekend.

“It’s a bit hard on them to take them to Winchester and then turn around and buck them again at Methven, they’d get a bit tired.”

A long time rodeo competitor, the former North Islander has always had a passion for horses which led him to take up the role.

“I was competing anyway as a steer wrestler – I used to ride bulls when I was younger, and after a few years off, got back into it as a steer wrestler.

es when the opportunity came up to run the Methven bucking horses string, I dove at it.”

Like any stockman, Ward takes great pride and puts a lot of effort into the broncos.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for those horses.

“We get to know them very well and know each one individually and their own characteristics.”

Of the Broncos, Ward said Black Betty, a former national title winner, and Clyde are the ones to watch this weekend.

“They are as good as each other and they are the ones that guys want to draw.

“Cowboys know if they get on them and do the job properly, they are guaranteed to be winning some money.

“The judge scores 50 points for the bronco and 50 points for the rider, so the better the horse goes, the more points you get and the more chance you have of

winning”.

“So if the cowboy can sit up there and make it look pretty, with the good style, and all that sort of stuff they’ll match the horse points-wise and hopefully come away with the win.”

The cowboys aim to stay on top for eight seconds, which is a lot longer than it sounds, Ward said.

Due to injury, Ward will be behind the scenes this weekend.

“I’m not competing because my knee is buggered and I’m having surgery in a few weeks.”

He probably won’t even get the chance to be a frustrated spectator.

“I’ll probably be too busy to be watching too much, as once we get in there we are flat out busy and run off our feet most of the day – it makes the day go past pretty quick.”

He will be assisting with animal welfare officers at Winchester before running the broncos and the

stock chute in Methven.

The Methven Rodeo gets under way from 8.30am, with the main events starting at midday.

There will also be a charity auction at lunchtime to support the McLeod family, whose two boys have been diagnosed with a rare genetic condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

Tickets to the rodeo at the cash-only gate cost $20 for adults, $10 for children between five and 16, and a family pass is $50.

Chorus fibre box brought to life

There is a new bright spot in the Ashburton Industrial area, home to two native birds. It’s an artwork on a Chorus cabinet, the first of five that will be brightened up in the district.

Chorus invited artists to submit their designs to be painted in various locations through the district back in July, and one of the successful applicants was Christchurch-based artist, Nick Lowry.

A repeat cabinet artist, the cabinet on JB Cullen Drive is his sixth completed cabinet to date around Canterbury, but first in the Ashburton District, and he is off to Alexandra next week for another one.

“It was just something that I found online.

“I always trawl online for opportunities.

“A friend had done one in the North Island, so I looked it up down here and applied for my first one.”

His latest work depicts two native birds in a regular setting but with irregular colouration.

“It’s taking on reality and tweaking it into the abstract.

“I like realism, but that cross-over between realism and abstraction.

“It’s just a different perspective and why I like to use those hyper-real colours.

“New Zealand birds are quite distinctive in their colours, so I have tried to keep their shape and form as basic as I can and mix in some brighter colours and weird fades around them.”

Chorus piloted the Cabinet Art project in Auckland in 2010 and after it proved successful it was extended throughout the country and they now complete on average 120 murals a year.

It commissions local artists to create artworks on the cabinets and pays them a set fee based on the size of the cabinet, and funds materials on top of this.

When finished, the murals are protected by an anti-graffiti sealant.

From a blank metal box to a work of art, Lowry said he has enjoyed creating the mini-murals.

It’s his first Chorus cabinet in Ashburton, but not the first time his artwork has been on display in the district.

“When I was younger I painted the skatepark here, years and years ago before there were murals on it.

“I’ve also had a few things in exhibitions down here.”

irst planted in 1901 as part of a timber production experiment, Rotorua’s majestic grove of towering Californian redwoods, spanning 6 hectares, has been lovingly safeguarded as a sublime recreational reserve.

Part of the original treewalk. There’s a much more heart-in-the-mouth experience called Altitude which sees you much higher up in the trees’ canopy.

All of my mountain biking friends consider Whakarewarewa as the gold-standard in New Zealand, so I was keen to check it out and rock some forest trails.

I met up with Marcello Ojero, senior guide at Mountain Bike Rotorua.

Suitably kitted out with hire gear, I was jumping on board a fabulous Giant Trance mountain bike, which has the most spectacular suspension.

With around 140km of continually evolving trails, all riding levels are catered for, from beginners and family groups through to experts looking for extreme action.

Despite some overnight rain, the trails appeared bone-dry and as solid as concrete. Marcello confirmed that the rock-hard pumice base is really what sets Whakarewarewa Forest apart, because you’ll never strike a boggy trail.

What also swept me up about the forest trails is the scenic splendour.

It’s one thing to be riding at the foot of those reverential tall trees, but it’s the finery and denseness of the ferns of the forest that make Whakarewarewa so unstoppably picturesque.

We stuck to the beginner, easy and intermediate tracks, but my favourite trail was The Dipper, which is like a relentlessly undulating roller-coaster bike ride.

The fact that you are just minutes from the centre of Rotorua, within this vast domain of two-wheeled adventure, is virtually beyond belief.

No wonder Rotorua’s mountain bike offerings are so revered.

Rotorua’s culinary credentials are well established, exemplified by the parade of temptations along Eat Streat.

I really enjoyed the Pig and Whistle, at the southern end of the street, which was formerly the city’s police station.

Whether the restaurant was irreverently named in reference to the building’s past life is wide open to conjecture.

The place was absolutely cranking on a Sunday night when I called in to dine.

Many devotees claim the Pig and Whistle serves up New Zealand’s best pigtail fries, I loved their lamb salad and their Kiwiana cocktails like the Kiwi Bach are superb.

Where to stay? The city’s oldest hotel is the Prince’s Gate, overlooking Government Gardens, a superb double-decker delight, cleaved out of kauri and rimu, with sweeping verandahs.

The Prince’s Gate was first assembled in Waihi in 1897, but relocated to Rotorua to cater to the tourist boom, after serving as a hospital during the Spanish Flu pandemic.

Labour’s Jo Luxton received 13,663 votes (36.6%) in 2017 to run second to National’s Andrew Falloon with 19,994 – 56 per cent of the vote and a margin of 6331 over Luxton.

In 2020, Luxton has increased by 5213 votes to tally 18,876 (49.2%) and beat National’s Megan Hands by a margin of 3484.

Hands received 15392 votes (40%).

The previous three elections National had polled over 50 per cent in Rangitata.

National received 20,106 votes in 2017, 53.03%, to Labour’s 12,729 (33.5%).

In 2020, Labour received 18,531, to equate to 43% of the vote, to national’s 12,244 (32%).

ACT received just 193 in 2017 but had 3721 (9.7%) in 2020.

There were 1050 votes for the Greens (2.7%) compared to 1321 (3.4%) in 2017.

NZ First went from 2281 votes (6%) to just 770 (2%)

Splitting the electorate at the Rangitata River, the statistics show an electorate of two halves.

Advanced voting had Hands ahead in Mid Canterbury ballot boxes with 5238 votes to Luxton’s 4917.

But in the Timaru District, Luxton was 4633 ahead, receiving 9205 votes to Hands’ 4572.

On Saturday, Hands received 3563 votes in Mid Canterbury compared to Luxton’s 1815.

In Timaru, there were 2910 votes for Luxton and 1969 for Hands.

In total, Hands won out in Mid Canterbury ballot boxes 8801 to Luxton’s 6732, a 2069 difference.

However, south of the Rangitata had Luxton received 12,115 votes to Hands’ 6541, a whopping 5574 vote-margin.

That equates to a total 3505 vote advantage to Luxton from votes placed within the electorate.

Advance votes from outside the electorate totalled 79, of which 50 were for Hands.

The other candidates had a combined total of 3453 votes, led

by Act’s Hamish Hutton with 1220 while there were also 585 informal votes.

Of note, the Not A party candidate James Rae, who specifically asked voters not to vote for him, received 56 votes – of which eight came from Timaru District voters.

In the party vote, the Timaru District was a landslide for Labour and the red tide washed into the traditionally blue Mid Canterbury ballot boxes.

In the advance voting, Labour received 8961 votes in the Timaru District, with National receiving just 3663.

In Mid Canterbury, Labour also came out on top with 4904 votes to National’s 4192.

On polling day, National received 2814 votes in Mid Canterbury with Labour collecting 1824 while across the river it was 2822 votes for Labour to 1533 for National.

That meant that National came out ahead 7006 to 6728 in Mid Canterbury.

In the Timaru District, it was 11783 to Labour, more than double National’s 5196.

Rural urban split In Mid Canterbury the rural vote, ballot boxes outside of Ashburton, went in favour of National 1988 to Labour’s 1202, with 627 votes for ACT. The urban vote went in favour of Labour 5526 to National’s 5018 – with 1398 votes for ACT. In the Timaru District the urban vote - all the ballot boxes within the Timaru city boundary – was heavily in favour of Labour, with 9569 votes to National’s 4071, with 1284 for ACT. Outside of Timaru the rural vote, including Temuka, was also almost heavily in favour of Labour, with 2215 votes and 1125 for National.

Voters in Temuka went with Labour to the tune of 1734 votes to just 704 for National.

The rest of the rural vote had Labour just ahead on 481 to National’s 421.

In terms of votes for the minor parties, ACT had 2025 total votes in Mid Canterbury compared to 1689 in the Timaru District.

The Greens received 658 votes in Timaru and only 378 in Mid Canterbury.

In 2017, National’s Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon made a clean sweep at every polling booth in the Ashburton District’s side of his electorate.

In 2020, Labour’s Jo Luxton had the majority in six of the 10 advance voting stations and picked up two polling booths on election day The Ashburton Trust Centre received the most advanced votes, a total of 3416, with Luxton coming out on top 1643 to Hands’ 1511.

The Walnut Ave Pavilion also had some 3318 votes, with 1633 for Hands and 1435 for Luxton.

Luxton won 14 of the 15 advanced polling booths in the Timaru District, predominantly by big margins, with Hands taking out Geraldine.

On election day, Mid Canterbury polling booths voted in favour of Hands at 24 of the 26 locations, with Luxton again taking out the Ashburton Trust Centre and Hampstead School.

South of the Rangitata, Luxton enjoyed some big margins in winning 17 voting stations with Hands managing to come out ahead at 10 – all considered rural locations – but by small margins.

In terms of the party vote, Labour claimed a victory at seven of the 10 advanced voting sites in Mid Canterbury.

Labour had a clean sweep of the Timaru District’s advance voting booths and on election day came out ahead at 21 of the 27 polling booths.

National had the higher count at five locations – all low number rural locations.

The Act party claimed the polling booth at Geraldine Primary School.

National had the highest number of votes at 23 of the 26 booths on election day, with Labour ahead at the Ashburton Baptist Church, Trust Event Centre and Hampstead School.

In 2017 the Winchmore Hall showed a zero count across all parties and all candidates on election day, but in 2020 it had 84 voters – 72 for Hands and 61 party votes for National, and 11 for Act.

L

anguage is the ultimate barrier that stops Pacific Islanders feeling at home in the Ashburton District, a community leader says.

Robert Tito, chairman of the district’s Pacific Island group said that their lack of fluency in the English language was a fundamental issue for many Pacific people and that meant they struggled when it came to accessing health care, housing and educational opportunities.

Many of those coming to New Zealand for work or on sports contracts came from small islands where they may have left school in their early teens to work on family farms and that meant they arrived in their new country with limited English, Tito said.

It’s a problem he understands well.

“I arrived in Auckland in 1984 and my English wasn’t great so I went to polytech to start learning,” he said.

That’s an option not available in Ashburton and, while some in his community attended classes in Christchurch, this meant partners had to stay home with children and that in turn could compromise work or sporting commitments.

“The very real need here in Ashburton is to have some form of language instruction,” Tito said.

However, it was conversational rather than formal English classes that were needed, he said.

“It’s not uncommon to have young fellows who won’t go for job interviews because of the language problem.”

With the Pacific Island community growing quite quickly, the language issue would also grow and that would see an increasing number of people struggling to feel part of their new community, Tito said.

Pacific Islanders were generally quite shy and were reluctant to ask for help and having limited English compounded the problem.

Young Pacific Islanders who had limited English and therefore limited job opportunities needed help or they would become a problem for the community, he said.

conversational English.

He established an after-school homework club for Pacific Island students and found mothers were also turning up because they were looking for an opportunity to practise their spoken English. For students, limited English meant limited job opportunities, Preece said.

“We have kids coming to school with English that’s not good enough to use in the school system and they end up leaving school and working on the chain at the meatworks. They’re trapped.”

He believes there is a need

to create a regular event where Pacific Islanders can get together with locals to talk. A non-threatening, informal situation needed to be created simply for conversational English, he said.

While it was the college’s job to educate students, Preece said it was clear that if the parents were more proficient English speakers it would help students too.

“It’s about the simple things, having a conversation, just talk-

ing to one another. Doing this would take time and it would need regular people turning up to build confidence and it needs to be done in a small group.”

Esera Lauina who came to New Zealand from Tonga to play rugby, said the lack of language proficiency made it very difficult in the workplace, where Islanders were afraid to raise issues, afraid they would be misunderstood or that raising concerns

might jeopardise their immigration status.

“We came here for good schools and we want our children to have a better education and better jobs. We want our kids to understand that there are good jobs out there,” he said.

The language barrier made it very difficult for many islanders and it meant that young people struggled to find jobs and ended up hanging around town.

“This is a family community, but it’s very hard with the language barrier. It can be very frustrating when you cannot speak proper English,” he said.

A

desire to provide an agricultural and social event for the farming community in a year when many traditional events have been cancelled, has led to 21 Mid Canterbury businesses joining forces to organise their own.

The Mid Canterbury Farm Machinery Expo will be held on Thursday, November 5, on JB Cullen Drive, Ashburton Business Estate.

The expo is squarely focused on agricultural machinery and products, said an organiser Sebco managing director Ed Harrison.

This included everything from tractors and cultivators to irrigation and diesel tanks.

The cancellation of the Ashburton A&P Show and other agricultural events in the wake of uncertainty over Covid-19 restrictions on gatherings prompted the event, which was organised within a few weeks.

“The expo is to not only showcase our individual businesses, but also to invite the Mid Canterbury farming community to a get-together that can be a social function,” Harrison said.

“Farmers haven’t had the opportunity to go to a show and

“We are not looking to compete with the A&P show or anything,” Harrison said.

“We sent out an email and had a meeting the following Monday and it was all go.”

he agricultural equipment sector remains in a positive mood throughout the country, says the Tractor and Machinery Association (TAMA), which represents the sector in manufacturing, retailing and distribution.

TAMA sales statistics for the year to date (September 30) are down around 18 per cent compared with 2019’s recordbreaking year. However, indicators remain positive as New Zealand enters the peak of another growing season.

TAMA president Kyle Baxter said despite sales volumes being down in some equipment ranges, members were confident regarding business trading across dealerships and local equipment

manufacturing.

Customers were already discussing their machine requirements for autumn and spring 2021, which was a really encouraging sign, Baxter said.

“Everyone has benefited from a mostly favourable winter around the country. This weather was greatly appreciated by many customers in a year that has seen a never-ending list of challenges.”

Baxter said one big challenge still facing TAMA members was the continuation of international border restrictions.

“Many TAMA members rely on overseas staff to fulfil a broad range of roles within dealerships, manufacturing and technical support roles. With these roles not being able to be filled from overseas during the season, and possibly beyond, TAMA is urging its members to look at other options available.”

These options included Covid-19 government funding for businesses who take on new apprentices or retrain unemployed people from other sectors.

The TAMA triennial employment survey, which came out in August, showed that the industry had

318 apprentices, but needed 176 more. The survey also showed that around 25 per cent of the workforce could likely retire in the next 15 years while only 32 per cent of staff are aged under 30.

“We want to attract more under 30s into our industry to help ensure sound succession planning.

Given the huge uptake and integration of new technology into our sector, the job opportunities continue to develop as quickly as the technology.

Grilled snapper fillets with chermoula on couscous

4 x 200g snapper fillets 200g couscous 2 t chargrilled pepper, chopped Chermoula Paste 3 garlic cloves 1 t salt 1 small onion, diced small bunch fresh coriander, chopped small bunch fresh parsley, chopped 1 t paprika ½ t chilli powder ½ t cumin 6 T olive oil juice from 1 lemon ■■ Combine all ingredients and make into a paste using a food processor or mortar and pestle.

■■ Rub fillets with paste and marinate for at least 20 minutes (keep 2 tsp of paste aside for couscous).

■■ Grill on direct heat for approximately 9-10 minutes.

■■ Cook couscous and mix in 2 tsp of paste and chargrilled pepper.

Waldorf and Statler go to war again

I

f the New Zealand election last weekend was the entrée, then the race to the White House in America must be the main course, judging by the way things are unfolding.

Political campaigns tend to grow a habit of being a little bit ‘he said, she said’ and it’s more about who can out-muscle the other while doing their best to discredit the other.

We’ve seen a little bit of it here on our shores over the past few months, but nothing like what’s happening on the other side of the world between Donald Trump and Joe Biden.

To be fair, it’s a little bit like watching Waldorf and Statler, from the Muppets.

Two men, throwing insult after insult with the only difference being that instead of throwing shade towards people on the stage, they’re throwing it at each other – seemingly just for the sake of it.

I should add here that Waldorf and Statler are actually quite funny while Trump and Biden are hilarious to watch – unfortunately, just not for the same reasons.

Yesterday, they had another debate. I’ll use the term debate lightly though, because it was hardly a battle of intellect, but instead a mud-slinging fight akin to something from the sandbox when you were five years old.

For all its bravado and pride in its country, America is without doubt in a very interesting situation.

It feels a little bit like the piece of string holding the country together is slowly, but surely fraying every time one of the pair open their mouths and say something controversial.

Every step is another step closer to breaking point and the result of the election may very well be that point, irrelevant of who the result happens to fall to.

There’s bound to be some impact on New Zealand when that moment does happen too.

And perhaps there is a warning in that because although the general rhetoric here in our country is to laugh and ponder how things become so ridiculous at times, we should be aware the ticking time-bomb that seems to be slowly, but surely developing over time.

The bullying bovine

C

ow-nfrontation.

Not a-moo-sed!

One of the advantages of having family with a ten acre block, is that there is room for a shipping container to accommodate ones father’s treasures.

Commonly referred to by others as “dad’s shit.”

My son’s family have a block out Loburn way in North Canterbury, and I have taken full advantage of this glorious, most convenient opportunity.

On my most recent visit, I announced after some time, that “I would just go down the back and check out some stuff in my container.”

The property is broken into a number of paddocks, and so the process began of opening and closing gates as I made my way down to the furthest one.

As I progressed I noted fresh cow pats in the paddock containing the er . . container.

I made a quick assessment of this noting that from what I could ascertain, there were no cattle beasts present in said area.

Even if there were, cows are passive creatures huh?

Then I became aware of a thunderous pounding breaking the still country atmosphere.

The ground shook.

I looked around and then to my deaf side whereupon I witnessed a massive, gigantic, herculean-sized dairy cow stampeding its way down the fence line with enormous determination in the adjoining paddock.

My eye got ahead of it and at the end of that fence line was a gate.

An open gate.

Leading into the paddock of which I was currently an occupant.

Yikeeeees.

I did some quick reckoning.

I had a 50-metre sprint to make it to the container, and my arrival by dead reckoning would have put both the cow and

myself at the container door at virtually the same moment.

There was a further complication.

I needed time to open the container and that wasn’t going to be available.

Still, my gut instinct said “what are your options? They are slim.”

Press on with Plan A. In fact Plan A was the only plan.

I immediately reached into the flight-or-fight part of my brain and selected “flight”.

There-upon I broke into a semi-geriatric sprint, and as the container loomed closer out the corner of my right eye said cow was bearing down on me with equal intensity.

I called on my only other

weapon available at that time.

Loudly projected profanity detailing the cows family pedigree and when I ran out of new words I just yelled the old ones even louder.

Straight at its face.

As I fumbled with the doors it was bowel-cleansing relief when I stepped safely inside, pulling the door closed behind me.

Heart pounding.

Temporarily safe.

As I weighed my further options, I eased the door back open a bit, only to be greeted by a large bovine face just inches away, and secreting drool and exhausting steam.

One of its ears was bending back.

Surely a sign of aggression?

My life flashed before my eyes.

That time I thought I was going to die on Manchester Street during the bad Christchurch quake.

When I stepped out on the road and avoided being crushed

by a falling pile of bricks.

I yelled and stomped through the partially-opened door and bought myself a few feet of separation.

Then I picked up a microphone boom stand and fully extended, I ventured gingerly out the door and broke into

Spirituality in the modern world

ctober 17 was New Zealand`s election day.

Coming each three years, a General Election gives us all the opportunity to look closely at members of Parliament, their personalities, and their policies.

Before we vote for them, we want to be sure their views align

with ours, so we carefully scrutinize all they say and do.

When, during the campaign the Leader of the Opposition was photographed at prayer in a chapel, different media outlets reported this very differently.

Some were critical that a politician should be using her spirituality as an election ‘prop’.

Others considered the media should not have intruded into this private domain.

The media reflected the wide differences we all have in understanding ‘human spirituality’.

All human beings are spiritual beings. Everybody has the capac-

ity to develop their spirituality but like most human activities, proficiency is only achieved through practice.

A musician may understand the musical theory, but until they practice and make their fingers or voice work, they will not make music.

The All Blacks train their minds with the game plan, then train their bodies with field practice.

So, it is with spirituality.

We can all sense the divine in a beautiful sunset, or the innocence in a child`s smile, unless we train our spirituality, we are

mere observers, unable to do more than watch.

That we are uncomfortable at observing another person exercising their spirituality says much about us.

We do not understand, therefore we criticise, or condemn.

Christians try to train their spirituality through study of theology and regular observances.

Others embark of journeys of self-awareness, to gain understanding.

In all human journeys, our frailties are ever present and outcomes unknown.

However, I find it oddly com-

forting to see a senior political figure in New Zealand kneeling before her ‘spiritual leader’ and practising the teachings of the greatest spiritual leader the world has ever known.

In particular, as recorded in Mathew 22 v 37 the command to love the Lord your God and to love your neighbour as yourself, is the greatest command to us all.

What better instruction to one of our political leaders.

Frank Guinness – not a fan of the ‘black stuff’

F

rank Guinness, Ashburton’s magistrate in 1879-80 had faced numerous challenges in his 60 years, but nothing prepared him for the night in July 1879 when he had an astonishing encounter with a wizard at the Town Hall.

Guinness had confronted many challenges in life.

One of his earliest was coming to terms with his famous family and what he saw as their contradictory values.

His grandfather was Arthur Guinness, founder of the renowned Dublin brewery, an extremely lucrative business. During Frank’s growing years his uncle Arthur Guinness II managed the enterprise and saw significant growth, wealth and status come to the family.

Frank’s father, however, Rev Hosea Guinness, was an ardent clergyman involved in religious and charitable activity in Dublin.

Frank’s mother Jane died when he was 15, one sister suffered from mental health issues and a brother struggled with alcohol abuse.

Frank could have had a career in the firm if he wished, but family legend is that he was seriously disenchanted with what he saw as a hypocritical combination of religion and the liquor trade.

His answer was to leave home at 18 and go to India and work in indigo dye production.

There he faced the challenge of more elitism – powerful colonial interests using local labour and resources to create fortunes, a privileged life that he eventually rejected.

Persuaded of the opportunities in New Zealand by his cousin, Canterbury pastoralist Michael John Burke, he eventually moved here with his wife Catherine and five children.

The challenge of farming was too much for Frank, so he left the land and set up in Christchurch as a horse trader, commission agent and real estate dealer.

With two more children, Guinness cast his eye towards steady work in the public service and was eventually successful in several jobs in Canterbury and the West Coast.

In 1861 he joined the Police force and seemed comfortable in the law-enforcement role.

The high point might have been in September that year when he was part of a posse that

rode from Christchurch to Lyttelton to quell rioting miners who spent the day drinking and creating mayhem, then tried to hide on their ship and quickly sail out of port.

The authorities were having none of that and the ringleaders were arrested at gunpoint.

Despite such commitment Frank’s boss found him wanting as a policeman and engineered his departure, not made easier by bankruptcy proceedings.

Success of a kind came, however, with a move into courts administration in Akaroa and then Greymouth for 10 years. Further success followed with his election to the Nelson Provincial Council, but his challenge to the provincial superintendent was not welcome, and when the opportunity came to appoint Guinness to the role of magistrate in Collingwood it was too hard to resist, for the superintendent and for Guinness.

Guinness relished the authority of the Bench and when transferred to Ashburton in May 1879 he soon reduced the fees payable to lawyers in civil cases and warned cattle owners that the fine for beasts straying onto railway land would be the maximum £5 rather

than the 5 shillings his brother magistrates had been imposing.

It could be said that in the 28 years Frank Guinness had been in the colony he had met the demands of supporting his wife and family and contributing to society.

He probably would not have suspected anything untoward attending the benefit concert for the recently widowed Mrs. Hill.

He might have seen the item on the programme announcing a “wondrous feat” by the Ashburton Wizard, and

he probably willingly took part in that magic trick, only to be shocked and humiliated by the outcome.

Why was Guinness singled out for such humiliation?

Two stalwarts of Mid Canterbury rugby were honoured at last week’s annual celebrations.

Graham Thomas and former All Black and vice president John “Jock” Ross were both presented life membership badges by the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union during the rugby awards evening in Ashburton.

The pair received their badges from board chairman Gerard Rushton.

Thomas, a former MCRU president, has more than 40 years of involvement within Mid Canterbury rugby. He first became involved as a player during the 1960s, before completing a transition to administration once he retired.

He served as a delegate to the Mid Canterbury Rugby Junior Advisory Board in 1974, before progressing through to the union’s management committee in 1982.

Thomas has also been prolific among age grade teams as a manager, looking after several rep teams between the late-70s and early-90s.

He was also influential during the resurgence of Maori rugby in the late 1970s, acting as the union’s representative and

leading a Mid Canterbury Maori selection to a Ratana Cup triumph in 1982 over its Canterbury counterparts.

Thomas turned his hand to community radio from the mid-80s and onto the 90s, when he established himself as the “voice of Mid Canterbury Rugby” with his weekly Saturday morning radio programme.

Ross, meanwhile, has provided 50 years of service to the local game, firstly as a player and then as a coach and television pundit. He first played club rugby for Old Boys, then the newly-formed Collegiate club, before rounding out his long playing tenure at Southern.

The former lock still holds the Mid Canterbury record for representative appearances, with a total of 161 games for Mid Canterbury between 1970 and 1987.

He made five appearances for the All Blacks on their tour of France and Romania in 1981, sharing locking duties with the likes of Andy Haden and Gary Whetton.

His son Isaac followed in his footsteps when he was selected for the All Blacks in 2009.

Following stints coaching the game across various levels, he moved into a role as a Heartland rugby television presenter.

The current vice-president of the MCRU, he has spent the last four years as president of the union.

Sevens get amongst the silverware The Mid Canterbury Combined under-15 sevens team has scrapped its way to a strong finish at the South Island Secondary Schools 7s Championships in Timaru.

The young team took out the Bowl final to finish third in Sunday’s tournament.

The side proceeded to knock over Timaru Boy’s High School before going down to eventual winners Christchurch Boy’s High School.

After beating McKenzie/Waimate in its third game, it beat Roncalli in the third and fourth place playoff.

McLeod returns to bench

Dallas McLeod is set for a long awaited return to the field in what serves as a potential milestone for the young backline utility.

The Methven-born player has been named to return for Canterbury for its Mitre 10 Cup round seven clash against Bay of Plenty in Tauranga.

McLeod, who injured his foot in the opening minutes of Canterbury’s competition opener against North Harbour last month, has been named on the reserves bench after a five week layoff.

The match could also serve as McLeod’s first blazer game for the province if he gets on the park, in what would be his 12th appearance for the red and blacks.

“Dallas has been training the house down, he’s done all his rehab and is itching to go,” Canterbury co-coach Reuben Thorne said.

“He’s a quality player, with Super Rugby experience and will give us another option.

“It was a real shame for him to pick up the injury at the start of the season.”

Canterbury sit in fifth spot on the Mitre 10 Cup premiership standings after being pipped by Waikato 16-15 in Christchurch last weekend.

Double header at Domain

It is a timely return to home pastures for the Technical Stags.

There is a catch however with a another tough opposition in the form of Pleasant Point lurking.

The Stags face the South Canterbury club as senior cricket returns to Ashburton in the form of a double header at the Domain today.

Allenton also has its first home game of the season in the Canterbury Country Combined competition as it meets Weedons after it got on the board in last weeks second round.

But it is Technical who will be desperate for good fortunes after a tough first up foray in the South Canterbury senior competition.

Two games without a win thus far, the familiar surrounds of the Ashburton Domain as they take on the most impressive after two weeks.

Technical’s collective batting line-up made a better fist of proceedings against Temuka after it was asked to pad up first.

It was unable to defend its total of 183 however with the hosts getting home with five wickets in hand and three overs to spare.

Pleasant Point meanwhile look in ominous touch after two weeks recapturing its title winning form from two years ago when it went on an unbeaten run to win the Tweedy Cup. A fortnight ago it got past Star by five wickets before hammering Timaru by 139 runs last weekend.

Top order bat Ollie Clayson looms as the biggest threat for the hosts today after scores of 49 and 92 over the first two weeks.

The Stags have plenty of allround prowess but need to consolidate those strengths today.

Richard Print, who missed last week, shapes as a key man with the ball at the top of the innings for the Stags.

The confidence levels for Allenton received a boost courtesy of a well taken four-wicket away win over Sefton last week.

It was another quality all round bowling performance from Allenton with Manpreet Hakkla again superb with another three-for and Satwant Singh one-upping Manpreet with 3-10 from his seven overs in a watertight turn at the crease.

The Mid Cantabrian club should be favoured against a Weedons side which has been exposed with the bat over the opening fortnight.

Eels vie for southern glory

A handful of Mid Canterbury players are lacing up for representative rugby league duty this weekend.

Although most fans have turned their attention to tomorrow night’s NRL grand final across the Tasman, the South Island Men’s Championship will be an enthralling showcase for some of the best in the Southern Zone.

The two-day tournament is to be played at Timaru’s Alpine Energy Stadium and will feature representative selections from Aoraki, Otago, Southland and the West Coast.

Six players from the Mid Canterbury region are part of the 22-man Aoraki squad coached by Blair Hanafin and Anam Mana who will play on home soil.

Waireka’s stars continue to shine

Picking up from where they left off earlier in the year, Waireka’s croquet troops continue to shine on the green.

Club players were among the medals last week at the South Island Masters in Timaru as the playing group clinched a total of 13, including five golds.

Bev Blair won gold in the golf croquet singles. Golf doubles pairings Bill Allnutt and Pat Alston and Brian Goodwin and Joy Hayes both clinched gold medals.

Raylene Phillips followed suit in the association singles, and again in the doubles alongside Jill Wilce.

A further three silvers were also nabbed, including Colin Lamb in the croquet singles. Another five bronze medals, including Pauline Scott and Bev LePoidevin (pictured) in the golf doubles, completed the successful haul.

Croquet proceedings continue at Waireka today with the four-day South Canterbury Handicap Singles and Doubles tournament.

Singles action starts at 9.30am this morning, before doubles kicks into gear on Monday afternoon.

A total of 15 players will contest the singles and five in the doubles, including representatives from Oamaru, South Canterbury, Christchurch.

Juniors take centre stage TENNIS

Seven days after the launch of interclub tennis and it is about to get serious on court for the juniors.

The Ashburton Trust Junior Open begins today, in what is the first significant local tournament of the season with interclub taking the week off.

Mid Canterbury tennis administrators have previously spoken about providing young players an opportunity to play tournaments and more meaningful tennis for the 2020/21 summer stretch.

A total of 114 players have been

confirmed across 22 events spanning under-9s to under-16/18s.

The likes of Tyler Leonard, Jess Aldridge, Maggie Crosby, Josh Gilbert and Jake Parsons will be some of the youngsters to watch on court.

Singles matches will be the best of 3 tie-breaker sets for under-12 to 18. Graded draws and play-off matches will be 3rd set match-tiebreaker to 10.

Under-10s will play short sets to 4 with 3rd set match tie-breakers to 7.

In doubles action it will be short deuce and third set match tie-breakers for all grades.

The tournament wraps on Monday.

Taking a gamble on the youngsters

eorge Bower.

The first time I heard his name, I thought silly buggers, how could you get George Bridge’s name so wrong?

Then I heard it again, and went back to the team sheet, to see who this new Crusader might be.

Turns out this hulking prop, nicknamed The Fijian Bulldozer, a bolter presented by coach Scott Robertson, had indeed done his time in the trenches, playing his first top-level rep game for Otago in 2014, and slowly (actually, very slowly) making his way through the ranks from there.

And now here he is, another coach’s bolter, this time Ian Foster, who, like it or not, is the incumbent All Blacks coach.

So now the rest of the nation is echoing that ‘who?’ call.

He does have one excellent back-story; he’s already worn the black jersey, called in to help out the All Blacks for a photo shoot,

to act as tackle fodder, when he was a club player in Dunedin – and now he’s back, except the real deal.

Will he make it? Nobody knows of course, but for a prop he’s young, and he has what so many promising up-and-comers haven’t – the opportunity.

The selectors, over the entire existence of the ABs, have cast their nets far and wide, although with the emergence of instant news anywhere and everywhere over the last few decades, most of their choices are now well-telegraphed.

We’ve had a few of our own, although most have had to go elsewhere playing top-level rugby before getting noticed by those that matter. I think the only ones who made it while representing Mid Canterbury were Denis Cameron and Grant Perry, both from Rakaia, and Jock Ross, although there’s been several more in the other category, including a couple of follow-in-your-father’sfootsteps blokes.

There’s also a few from around here who could have made the

cut over the years, if the selectors had just tossed that final coin the right way.

Historically there have been a few to upset the couch potato selectors.

The closest to Bower’s story is from just a couple of seasons ago, when Karl Tu’inukuafe, a player without even a Super Rugby contract at the start of the year, was suddenly charging through the ranks at the Chiefs, and his irresistible form carried him right into a black jersey, making six starts and seven runons for the national side.

That he didn’t make the World Cup squad was more due to the swathe of in-form props available, so there was no fairytale finish for Big Karl.

With a history of wings scoring record numbers of tries in their early All Blacks years (think Joe Rokocoko, Ron Jarden, Julian Savea, Doug Howlett, Bryan Williams, JK, Jonah etc etc), it’s a tough school to break into, but Nehe Milner-Skudder hotstepped his way straight into the ABs, until recurring injuries blew

his career apart.

The aforementioned Bryan Williams was a promising 19-year-old wing for his Ponsonby club when Ivan Vodanovich suggested he might like to tour South Africa. He found himself on the plane alongside Alex Wyllie, Brian Lochore, Colin Meads, Fergie McCormick, Chris Laidlaw and Ian Kirkpatrick.

You may have heard of some of those names – BeeGee had grown up idolising them, and in a flash he was on tour with them,

in the toughest rugby arena in the world.

Turns out he could play a bit.

Of course they don’t all make it – Simon Mannix got the call in 1990, another 19-year-old punt from the selectors.

He went to France with the All Blacks and had a few games, but a fella called Andrew Mehrtens was just crash-landing onto the scene, not long out from the CHBS All Blacks assembly line, and Mannix quickly faded into the background.

Even Jerome Kaino can be considered a bolter; he was a fullback in earlier years, and was hovering around for a couple of seasons before the light bulb went on, and he rapidly blasted into his career as one of our best No. 6s ever.

So George Bower has plenty of form to follow, and it is entirely up to him, and the fickle rugby gods, as to whether he will turn out to be the superstar of Rugby World Cup in France 2023.

Out to fix the anomaly Winterfell gives Todd strong Ashburton hand

Horse racing is often about the little variables that can make all the difference when it really matters.

Things like fitness, manners, making the most of an opportunity and being at absolute peak are always paramount.

But above all else, comes experience.

There is nothing quite like the idea of having been there before and reached the summit.

It’s only fair that all the talk in the lead up to the New Zealand Trotting Cup this year is focused on three horses; Self Assured, Spankem and North Island star, Copy That.

However, they all lack one

thing that a key rival they will face in Monday’s Ashburton Flying Stakes has up his sleeve, and that’s victory in the greatest race of them all.

His name?

Thefixer.

The 2018 winner of the great race is on the comeback trail from a potentially career-threatening injury.

And while he hasn’t been demanding the headlines and boasting the form lines that some of his rivals in both the Cup and Monday’s Ashburton feature have, he in no way deserves to be given the tagline of the forgotten horse of this year’s open class pacing ranks.

And on Monday, we might just get a glimpse as to why.

The now Regan Todd-trained pacer showed he was back on track with a solid fourth last week at Addington in what was effectively his first race day outing for the season, after a heart issue impacted on his return a few weeks earlier.

“We started from scratch again really, we had too,” Todd said yesterday from Woodend Beach.

“But boy, I’ve been so pleased with him this week – he is really bright and has bounced around since that run last week.

“He’s taken another step and for us that’s the focus, one step at a time.”

“I’ve been lucky enough to have trained a few good horses here, a pacer like Saveapatrol being an obvious one, and you can just tell with horses who have that little bit extra about them, and this guy is definitely one of them.”

Taking that next step is the big goal for Monday’s race and if that happens then Todd will be a happy man.

“I’m not expecting him to come out and just win it or anything like that, but I am expecting a really good performance from him and seeing that will tell us that we are on the right path to where we need to be.”

Monday’s meeting on the Ashburton track will mark another big moment for Todd, who last weekend was gifted a huge opportunity in his training career.

He was approached to take over the training of reigning Inter Dominion champion, Winterfell, from All Stars’ Mark Purdon and

Natalie Rasmussen – the same stable that Thefixer came to him from.

Winterfell will contest the other feature – the Ashburton Trotters’ Flying Mile.

“It was a bit of an honour to get asked to be fair.

“He’s a great horse.”

While no doubting the ability, the manners side of things for Winterfell have been problematic in recent months, and it is hoped that a change of environment and some time on the beach might help stem some of those issues.

“He’s in incredible condition, he looks amazing.

“This week has been about getting to know him really, but I’ve loved every bit of what I’ve seen from him.

“We just need to get him relaxed and enjoying life again and then hopefully things will happen as they should be again.”

The pair are joined by five other runners from Todd’s stable for the meeting, including Splash Cola, who also contests the trotting feature, with pacing mare Cheezel also a good each way chance in a strong mares’ event later in the day.

Investing in Ashburton

ith the Ashburton District’s road maintenance contract in their hands HEB Construction is determined to make the most of the opportunity that it has been afforded.

And a key part of the entire operation is ensuring that we integrate into the community seamlessly.

HEB executive general manager – civil and maintenance, David Simpson, said: “It’s important to us that residents and visitors experience much more than just a journey – we want them to feel meaningfully connected to the region and our work, so we are really looking forward to delivering this crucial programme.”

Last month the company was awarded the contract from the Ashburton District Council that will see them responsible for all aspects of maintaining both sealed and unsealed roads across our 2600 kilometres of roading network.

Simpson said the team was excited to take up stewardship of the district’s roads.

“As a national maintenance provider, HEB Construction are committed to the safety and growth of our regions.

“We are delighted to begin working with the council, iwi and the community to look after this vital infrastructure.”

The contract also encompasses signage, road markings, drainage and bridges and hoping to begin on December 1 this year.

So, with time ticking – it’s a case of putting the foot to the floor and doing the background work to ensure that when that date arrives, HEB Construction is ready to rock and roll.

“We’re really excited, it’s an excellent opportunity for us to establish ourselves

in the district and we can’t wait to get up and running,” business unit manager for HEB Construction, Johnny Brown said.

A former Ashburton local himself, having grown up here before moving to Christchurch, Brown said a smaller contract awarded to the business last year gave them the opportunity to get a feel for the area.

“The feedback we got from our staff was incredible, we had them staying in Ashburton and also in Methven and they just loved it – it is such an amazing area.

“That was a great justification for us that it was worth exploring our options and we were over the moon when we were awarded the contract.”

Work is under way to secure a site in Ashburton to operate out of and with two short-term options on the table to get the ball rolling, a more permanent base in the near future is high on the priority list.

“We’re lucky in that we have an immediate option available for us, and it gives us a little more time to find somewhere to permanently call home.”

As well as a location, HEB are also on the lookout for staff and are hoping tobegin on December 1 with 10 new staff on board across a variance of roles, from leadership through to labourers.

“We’re incredibly focused on our people, we want to create an environment where they enjoy coming to work, and are proud to work for us.

“And allowing opportunities for people of the Ashburton District to come and join our team is just a big part of that.”

We are growing a capable Temporary Traffic Management team nationally with a great focus on upskilling our traffic team.

This is a permanent, fulltime position working a minimum of 40 hours per week. The work is Monday to Friday between the hours of 6am to 6pm and Saturday work will be required from time to time.

We have fantastic opportunities for reliable, motivated and physically fit Crew Leaders to join the newly formed Ashburton road maintenance contract team here at HEB Construction in Ashburton.

Two positions will be leading our Cyclic crew and two will be supervising our Heavy Maintenance teams. These are permanent, full time positions working a minimum of 40 hours per week. The work is Monday to Friday between the hours of 6am to 6pm and Saturday work will be required from time to time.

We have fantastic opportunities for 2 Cyclic and 3 Heavy Maintenance Operator Labourers as part of our newly formed Ashburton road maintenance contract team here at HEB Construction in Ashburton.

This is a permanent full-time position. The work is Monday to Friday between the hours of 6.00am to 6.00pm and Saturday work will be required from time to time.

ABOUT YOU – STMS L1 Practicing – Practical working experience in the civils/ infrastructure industry – Full clean Class 2 driver’s licence, with Class 4 and WTR endorsements being advantageous.
