Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre has faced its toughest test and it’s passed with flying colours.

When the gym opened in May, 2015, the Ashburton District Council opted to manage the facility but undertook to review that management after three years. That review has been completed, the gym’s operation has been given a giant tick and it will continue to be run by

When the gym opened the council faced the ire of private gym operator John Moore who said it was setting itself up in opposition to private enterprise by offering memberships that were lower than commercial rates.

While the council said the gym would be a moneymaker, Moore said it would not. He wanted the gym to be leased to a private operator.

Whirlwind China trip identifies opportunities ADC to

A three-person delegation to China could yield big benefits to the Ashburton District in the form of trade, tourism and a raft of international students.

Deputy mayor Neil Brown, Ashburton College principal Ross Preece and Experience Mid Canterbury chief executive Bruce Moffat have returned from a whirlwind, five-day, fivecity, 18-presentation tour with a book full of opportunities to explore.

The overwhelming response the group received wherever they went was that Chinese towns and cities had a strong desire to build a friendship with towns and cities in New Zealand.

Rather than the traditional sister city relationships that had been developed in the past ,there was a strong drive now for “friendship” relationships, Brown said.

“These are on a lower and less formal scale. I came back

Ashburton already has one sister city relationship with Ziayong.

“This is about exploring a relationship of co-operation.”

Brown’s role as a civic leader was key in opening doors to discussions at civic levels in the five cities.

“If either the mayor or deputy mayor isn’t there then you don’t get anywhere,” he said.

His role was also to discuss business and agricultural trade opportunities “They were very impressed when we talked about small

seeds and when we told them the percentage of world seeds we produce for such a small country.”

In terms of education, there were clearly plenty of opportunities to boost fee-paying student numbers.

New Zealand is high on the list of preferred destinations for Chinese schools when it comes to sending students overseas to study. Those study periods could be anything from a week to several years, Brown said.

“They’re already sending students to Canada, the US and England and they see New Zealand as a very good fit.”

The potential for tourism was also huge, he said, with strong indications that the Chinese tourism industry is very keen to move into the New Zealand market in a much stronger way.

While the tour had packed a lot into a short space of time, it was clear there were plenty of opportunities that could come from the contacts made, he said.

■ COUNCIL LONG-TERM PLAN

Keen response to input call

More than 180 people have taken the time to have a say on the way in which rates money will be spent over the next 10 years.

While the turnout to a series of public meetings to discuss the Ashburton District Council’s long term plan attracted more councillors and council staff than they did members of the public, when it came to putting their thoughts on paper, residents were keen to respond.

Of the 180-plus who chose to comment, 31 are taking advantage of the opportunity to tell councillors in person what they think of their spending plans.

Those submissions will be heard on Monday and Tuesday next week.

In a pre-consultation survey roading emerged as the number one concern for most residents.

In the plan councillors are looking at three options when it comes to funding what is likely to be a shortfall in funding from the government – do not fund the anticipated $3 million from council funds, partially fund this or fully fund the amount needed.

Seventy-two per cent, 129 submissions, were on roading with 78 per cent of those wanting the council to partially fund the shortfall. Twenty per cent said fund the lot while only two per cent said do not put any more money into roading.

If councillors opt to partially fund the shortfall, the $1.7 million needed would not increase

rates but it would see a lesser level of service on roading work.

The second urban bridge, planned to cross the Ashburton River at the end of Chalmers Avenue, attracted the second largest number of submissions, 66 per cent or 119.

While the project is likely to attract 51 per cent funding from NZ Transport Agency, the council is pushing for this to be funded 80 per cent by the agency because it will ease traffic congestion on State Highway One. The majority of submitters, 77 per cent agreed. The 51 per cent split was supported by 49 per cent while only 20 per cent supported the council paying the full cost, likely to be $35 million.

for developments at the EA Networks Centre. An extension to the swim school pools and a new splash zone was supported by 63 per cent of submitters with 37 per cent opposing this development.

A proposal to build a climbing wall in the stadium was supported by 59 per cent and opposed by 41 per cent while the development of sports fields was supported by 52 per cent and opposed by 48 per cent.

The sportsfield development would require some financial input from user groups.

In addition there were hundreds of comments made either supporting or opposing the plan’s contents as well as on other issues, with other suggestions for rates spending.

It had been an anxious time for staff until the outcome of the review was known, Prescott said.

“I think everyone can be pretty proud of what they’ve done here.

We’re stoked, particularly gym manager Anna Johnson, it’s been her baby and she’s done a sterling job. And for our members, they’ve now got security that we’re here for the long haul, not the short haul.”

The review was about the financial side of the business more than the operational side, and it confirmed what he had always maintained, that the gym made money, Prescott said.

“The figures vindicated everything.”

In his report Murray Straite from Miro Business Services found there was a far more compelling case for the council remaining owner and operator of the gym than there were for leasing it to a third party. Ashburton is one of 27 councils that have chosen to manage their gym in-house.

Financially the council is significantly better off retaining ownership of the gym to the tune of $134,000 per year.

The EANC gym’s membership rates are at the lower end of the scale across five Ashburton gyms. Two of these are open 24/7, two (including EANC) open 16 hours a day and one opens for 12 hours daily.

The gym’s financial surplus subsidises the operating costs of the entire EA Networks Centre and mayor Donna Favel said that made leaving its management with the council the best financial option for ratepayers.

“The decision to review the option of leasing it out was to help ensure we were making the most financially prudent decisions about the EA Networks Centre for ratepayers,” she said.

“That means that intervention begins with the lower level measures like home visits from a police youth aid officer, and if needed, we work our way up to more restrictive approaches,” Hooper said.

At the top of the hierarchy, and relatively uncommon for Ashburton offenders, is an appearance in District Court or time in the youth justice facility Te Puna Wai. Hooper said he believes youth justice organisations in Ashburton make positive changes for every child and young person they work with – but ultimately it comes down to them and their families to embrace these changes.

Fonterra’s latest milk price forecasts are very good news for Mid Canterbury farmers, the former chairman of Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury dairy section, Nathan Currie, says.

Fonterra yesterday increased its 2017-18 forecast milk price by 20 cents to 6.75 per kgMS, and at the same time announced an opening forecast farmgate milk price of $7 per kgMS for the 201819 season.

Currie, a Fonterra supplier who stood down from his feds position within the past fortnight, said the 20 cent increase was very exciting for Mid Canterbury farmers, who had weathered some tough times in the past few years due to lower payouts.

“A payout of $6.75 is nothing to be sneezed at and it’s very exciting to see what the forecast is for next season.”

However, he had a word of warning.

“We’ve been here before with

Fonterra. They’ve promised us the world and have not delivered.

I hope that doesn’t happen this time. Fingers crossed it doesn’t.

“If we can string a few years together of reasonable payouts, it’s going to be very positive going forward,” he said.

The break-even point for dairy farmers seemed to climb faster all the time, Currie said, with the costs of parts of their business, like environmental compliance and staff, climbing all the time.

Fonterra chairman John Wilson said the strong milk price reflects a global supply and demand picture that continues to be positive for farmers.

“Global dairy prices have risen since the start of the season. The price of whole milk powder is particularly strong due to continued growth in demand from China and across Asia.

“Our co-operative’s forecast milk collections here in New Zealand have increased to 1500 million kgMS, up from the 1480 million kgMS we reported at half

year, thanks to improved farming conditions in March and April after a challenging spring and summer.”

He said the higher milk price is good news for farmers who are still recovering after the two years of lower milk prices in 2015 and 2016.

Wilson said the strong opening milk price forecast for next season reflected a continued positive global supply and demand picture.

“Demand is expected to remain strong – especially from China and for butter and AMF (anhydrous milk fat). We are expecting the global dairy market’s current prices, especially for fats, to continue throughout the new season.

“We are also forecasting our New Zealand 2018/19 milk collections to be 1525 million kgMS, a 1.5 per cent increase on our current forecast for this season, and we expect to see a lift in supply from the EU, US, Australia and Argentina.”

When Senior Sergeant Phil Dean asked Ashburton’s Youth Aid Officer, Senior Constable Rob Hooper for a list of the town’s top 10 current youth offenders he received a surprising and optimistic response.

“He told me there isn’t actually 10 of them,” Dean said.

Ashburton is in the midst of a reasonably quiet time for youth offending, Hooper said, with markedly less activity than 12 months ago.

While youth crime tends to come and go in waves and can decline in the winter months, he said he is happy to say it is in a nice little lull.

Hooper said the youth justice system is made up of a whole lot of little cogs – organisations working together to help youth offenders via a holistic approach.

“Police are only one of these little cogs,” he said.

He credits organisations like Safer Ashburton, He Waka Tapu, ACADS, and education providers among a host of others, who provide education programmes, counselling and interventions to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Finding an approach that works for individual youth offenders can be a long process, but ultimately, the youth justice system works, he said.

Bringing ball fairytales to life for those in need

Louise Duke and Kirsty McGlynn barely had time to put the call out for pre-loved ball dresses before donations galore were flowing in.

The founders of the hugely popular Once Upon a Time Project, now in its second year, said people have been “very, very generous” in the lead up to Ashburton College’s 2018 ball.

The initiative aims to give deserving girls all they need for a fairytale night by setting them up with a preloved ball dress, a free ticket, and even hair and make-up pampering.

McGlynn said school balls can be a costly time for some students and their families, with the tickets alone costing $80.

But this year a range of goodies will be dished out, including brand new dresses, homemade corsages and hairdressing packages from Minx and Tanglez Hair Studio.

Two boy’s tickets have also been donated, for which the organisers are currently receiving nominations, and Duke said they have already received nominations for six very deserving girls.

A new secondary education provider could be on the horizon for Ashburton.

After consultation between parents and the board of trustees, Ashburton Christian School have confirmed they are looking at the feasibility of adding Year 11, 12 and 13 students to their roll.

The co-educational, state integrated school currently teaches 105 Year 0-10 students on a six classroom site.

ing peers receive their fairytale experience. “We put so much work into the ball, and everyone has that dream of the perfect night,” McCrea said.

While the idea of including secondary students is in its “very early days”, principal Tim Kuipers said there are two major benefits to be considered.

Firstly, for Christian families, he said it would provide a secondary option with a Christian focus.

Secondly, it’s just about having another option, he said.

“Most towns our size have a second option – and while you could say Mount Hutt (College) is our second high school, I think some families desire to have an-

other choice here.”

If Ashburton’s population continues to grow at projected rates, he believes the change would not impact Ashburton College’s roll.

However, he said he has full support for Ashburton College, and the excellent job that they do.

“We don’t want to be opposition to them, we just want to provide an option. I think we’d hope that we can work in with the college,” he said.

Throughout coming months the board of trustees will be un-

dertaking a “feasibility study”, looking at how the change could work in terms of school finances and the curriculum.

As they are at full roll cap, they may also have to apply for a roll increase, Kuipers said.

He said any changes would likely not take place until 2020 or beyond.

Ashburton Christian School was first opened in 2009 and became integrated in 2011. In 2012 the school was approved to extend their classes to Year 9 (2013) and Year 10 (2014).

Shots fired at a Northland community police station smashed a window and went through into the main office area.

The Ōtangarei Police Station, in Whangarei, is attached to a series of flats in Matai St was targeted about 2.30am yesterday. No one was in the building at the time and no one was injured. Police confirmed the shots had been fired and an investigation to find the culprits was under way.

It’s not the first time the station has been targeted. In August 2012 four shots were fired at the building, which blasted through the window and shattered a front door glass panel.

A Christchurch property consultant who stole $300,000 from Selwyn District Council over eight years was yesterday jailed for nearly three years. Stephen Rolf Gubb, 62, was employed

by Hughes Developments to sell land, leases, and design and build packages for the local authority’s business hub development, Izone.

But the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) found that Gubb, and a codefendant who has interim name suppression, worked together to fraudulently get commission payments for the sale of land.

Yesterday at Christchurch District Court, he was sentenced after earlier admitting 14 Crimes Act charges of obtaining by deception.

Caught over hit and run A Blenheim motorist who allegedly took off after a head-on crash has been located by police after leaving his windscreen with registration details at the scene. The two cars collided at the intersection of Arthur St and Richmond Road in Blenheim around 1.30pm on Friday. Police said initial reports suggested one driver left the scene after the crash. The motorist also left their windscreen behind at the scene of the collision. No one was seriously hurt in the crash. A police spokesman said a 22-yearold man had been charged with operating a vehicle carelessly and was due to appear in the Blenheim District Court on May 30.

Teachers head back to the classroom to update skills

Around 100 teachers from nine Mid Canterbury schools swapped places in the classroom on Tuesday for an afternoon spent learning and brushing up on their own skills.

Mount Hutt College hosted a massed professional development afternoon for teachers in the Opuke Community of Learning (COL).

While students relished an early finish, teachers spent the afternoon building connections with other teachers and undertaking personal development activities focused on lifting student achievement in writing.

Opuke COL leader and Methven School Principal Chris Murphy is away on sabbatical, but filling in for him were Dorie School Principal Anthony Dorreen and Rakaia School Principal Mark Ellis. Also helping to organise the personal development session was Across Schools Teacher Rosie Robinson.

Robinson said the COL share the vision of learning together (Ako Tahi) working together (Mahi Tahi) and raising achievement (Paetae Kohi).

“It’s building our own expertise by using the expertise right beside us,” she said.

Tuesday marked the second time the Opuke COL have teamed up for a professional development event and another is planned for

Opuke is one of two COLs in the district, with Hakatere COL encompassing a further 12 schools.

Kapiti Coast councillor found guilty Kapiti Coast councillor David Scott has been found guilty of indecent assault.

The jury in the trial at Wellington District Court took three and a half hours yesterday to reach the verdict.

David Scott, 71, had earlier pleaded not guilty to one charge of indecent assault.

Scott said outside court that his family would be devastated by the verdict.

“I haven’t had any sleep for a year and two months.”

He said he was not sure how the verdict would impact his role as a councillor. He said he hoped to be at Kapiti Coast District Council today.

The Crown has argued Scott pressed himself against a Kapiti Coast District Council employee at a morning tea following a council meeting in April last year.

In her closing address to the jury

lawyer Kate Feltham said the complainant was a professional woman who took her job seriously.

“The evidence she gave was given in a calm, coherent, logical way.

She was sure of what happened.”

Feltham said it could not have been Scott’s wallet the employee felt because he kept his wallet in his right pocket not the left, which is the area the complainant said she felt the penis.

“Now whether she felt his penis

or whether she felt something else, I suggest doesn’t actually matter because his actions in grabbing her, holding her and thrusting himself into her were what made it indecent.”

Feltham said when the complainant turned to look around there was plenty of space.

“So clearly it was a deliberate act on his part to come so close and to grab her in that way.”

In his closing address to the jury

defence lawyer Mike Antunovic said the alleged thrusting was at the heart of the case because that was what made it indecent.

But he said the Crown had not proved that beyond reasonable doubt and the complainant had exaggerated her account.

Antunovic asked that a conviction not be entered.

Scott has been remanded on bail until June 19 for sentencing.

Cannabis, euthanasia votes possible before 2020 New Zealanders may get the opportunity to vote on legalising cannabis and voluntary euthanasia at the same time, possibly as early as next year.

Labour agreed to hold a public referendum on legalising cannabis for personal use at or before the 2020 general election as part of its confidence and supply agreement with the Greens.

The Government now says it could be held ahead of the election to make sure it did not overshadow the election campaign.

Parliament is also considering a bill to legalise voluntary euthanasia, and NZ First has said its support is conditional on a binding referendum on the law change.

The bill’s sponsor, Act Party leader David Seymour, has agreed to that proposal, though it will still need majority support in Parliament to proceed.

Justice Minister Andrew Little said there could be some benefits to holding two referenda at the same time.

“If you’re going to do one, you might as well do a job lot,” he said.

“It would make sense to not have to spend a lot of money on a succession of referenda.”

There could also be some value in holding a referendum outside the election period, Little said.

Cabinet had not yet considered the cannabis referendum, but when it did the date would be one of its considerations. ”Do we run it at the same time as the general election, as there will be some cost saving in that?” Little said.

“The other question is do we want the general election dominated by the referendum which might suggest an earlier timetable than 2020.”

The earliest a referendum could

take place would be late 2019, because it would need to be preceded by a public information campaign.

Holding the referendum outside the election period could open up the Government to criticism over the cost.

Labour was critical of the $22m cost of the National-led Government’s public referendum on changing New Zealand’s flag in 2015-16, though that included the costs of the design process, expert panel, and nationwide roadshows.

Green Party co-leader James Shaw said it made more sense to hold a referendum at the same time as an election.

“Just on the basis of cost and convenience – people are going to be going to the polling booths anyway. And the mail is a declining way of staying in touch in this country so I don’t know what the turnout of a postal referendum would be.”

He did not share Little’s concern that a referendum could detract from a general election.

“I think people would treat it as a distinct issue,” he said.

NZ First leader Winston Peters said he wanted the cannabis referendum to be binding on the Government.

But Little said neither of the referenda were likely to be binding: “We don’t typically do binding referenda in this country.”

Labour has previously said it did not want a euthanasia debate in election year.

Former Labour leader David Shearer went as far as to make former Labour MP Maryan Street remove her pro-euthanasia bill from the private member’s ballot in 2013 in case it was pulled in election year.

‘Stupid little girl’ comment sparks row Open warfare has broken out after National criticised Speaker Trevor Mallard’s handling of Parliament and criticised him for telling the media a National MP had described PM Jacinda Ardern as a “stupid little girl” – a comment it says has never been proven.

National’s shadow Leader of the House Gerry Brownlee has written to the Speaker, saying National’s confidence in him was “significantly shaken”.

Brownlee questioned whether the Speaker had told media a National MP had called Ardern a “stupid little girl” in Parliament earlier this month, a comment

that did not appear to be heard by anybody else and could not be heard on Parliament TV. Mallard has now confirmed to the Herald he did tell a journalist he had heard that comment.

“I was asked by a journalist what the comment was. I answered.”

On May 9 when the “stupid little girl” comment was said to be made in Parliament, Mallard had called for a National MP to apolt ogise for a “very sexist remark” but nobody owned up and Mallard would not repeat the comment when Brownlee asked what it was.

Newshub reported on May 15 that a source had told it the re-

mark was “stupid little girl” but it could not be heard on Parliament TV. Brownlee said if Mallard had passed on such information it was unacceptable.

No National MPs had heard the comment in question and all denied saying it. “If the source is the Speaker that is unacceptable.

The Speaker cannot go briefing the media against the Opposition.”

Brownlee has asked for an explanation by 2pm today and said National would decide what other steps it would take after considering the response.

NZ’s energy future coming quickly

New Zealand dairy companies could lose the right to use terms such as feta, parmesan, brie and camembert if a free trade deal goes ahead with the European Union, warns a trade expert.

The EU has given the green light to trade talks with New Zealand and Australia, with free-trade agreement (FTA) negotiations set to take place in the coming months.

Trade commentator and former negotiator Charles Finny said it was “very good news” but the negotiations would have challenges.

Finny said geographical indications around dairy could be the most challenging part of negotiations, although forcing change would be “ridiculous”.

“If you look at their mandate [the EU] you’ll see that they’ve got pretty strong interests in protecting their terminology and I would have thought we wouldn’t be too keen on that, so that will be a tough bit of the negotiation,” he said.

“What they’re wanting is [a] very similar regime to what we have now in the wine area, we used to be able to make New Zealand champagne and now we can’t.

“We don’t call wine bordeaux or burgundy anymore, so we can survive in the wine area, we can probably survive in dairy. I think some of these terms are of such common usage that it would be ridiculous to force change.”

The EU has estimated that a trade deal could result in a $1.2$2 billion boost to New Zealand’s GDP and up to a 20 per cent increase in exports.

deal with one of the largest economies in the world that would boost jobs and incomes.

“It’s very significant. That flows through to more jobs and higher incomes for New Zealanders,” Parker said.

“I’m sure one of the areas of sensitivity for the French is our agricultural exports to Europe and that will be a difficult part to negotiate. But we want to get the negotiations started.”

Finny said the talks were made possible by the hard work of others over many years in keeping access to that market open.

“It’s particularly important from a strategic perspective at a time when we are seeing a number of other players looking inward. This demonstrates that the EU, New Zealand and Australia are looking outward and wanting to expand their free trade networks.”

Beef + Lamb New Zealand chief executive Sam McIvor said the agreement to start negotiations represented a significant milestone for the sector in the face of growing protectionist rhetoric worldwide.

“The FTA will create a stable

and level playing field which is crucial to the growth and future prosperity of the sheep and beef sector and New Zealand as a whole,” McIvor said.

“Over 600,000 New Zealand jobs directly depend on international trade, with the red meat sector alone employing over 80,000 people in New Zealand. All these jobs depend on our ability to export competitively and in a stable and predictable trading environment.”

The EU is an important market for New Zealand red meat products, worth more than $1.8 billion in the year ended December 2017.

EU trade commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said that Australia and New Zealand “are important friends and allies. They are part of this circle of friends who believe in good trade and in multilateralism”.

Statistics New Zealand data showed exports to the European Union for the year ended December were worth $8.61b, with imports of $12.98b. New Zealand’s total exports were worth $76.34b for that period, with imports of $72.19b.

Transpower chief executive Alison Andrew said technological improvements in EV and batteries, more efficient electricity use and more renewable generation from wind, solar and geothermal would avert brownouts or blackouts.

“I’m confident if there is demand the industry has proven it can meet it with building power stations. There is a lot of consented wind out there and solar technology is coming at us very quickly. There is a huge technology push.’’

She said there would be hurdles to reach, such as the forecast huge demand for EVs given price and availability. However, with more car manufacturers moving from petrol to electric affordability would improve.

There was no modelling done on power prices as a result of building new stations but big spending on the national grid for major new infrastructure would not be necessary.

Andrew said the grid was in good shape to cope with expansion following a $5 billion investment during the past decade.

A major report into New Zealand’s energy future finds demand for electricity will double and forecasts electric vehicles will make up 85 per cent of light vehicles by 2050.

And as fossil fuels are dumped as a way of powering industry, the Transpower-commissioned report found the equivalent of more than four big wind farms a year would be needed to keep up with surging demand.

By as early as 2030 electric vehicles (EVs) would make up 40 per cent of the fleet of more than three million light vehicles as they become cheaper to buy, run and have a longer lifespan than internal combustion engines.

The study predicted the country’s peak demand risk would be exacerbated with growing demand being met from increasingly intermittent energy sources.

One way of solving this could be a trans-Tasman cable to import power from Australia – assumed to be generated from vast solar plants in the Outback.

While new technology in this country would mean increas-

Not only would there be a mass move to electric vehicles, aircraft and ships could also run on batteries.

Youth crime going in right direction T

welve months ago, the terms youth and crime went together like a match made in heaven – or should that be hell.

As a district we were stuck.

Stuck in the seemingly neverending depths of a run of petty crime caused by a group of young individuals who had taken it upon themselves to rule the roost over our sleepy little towns.

Citizens were afraid to walk the streets of the CBD for fear of intimidation and a constant stream of incidents were reported to police, almost on a daily basis of a raft of different things, from verbal abuse on the street to night time break-ins and theft at establishments around the region.

It became a vicious cycle.

There appeared to be no end in sight.

A public meeting was called in an effort to band together to put things in place to help bring a halt to the crimes from the young individuals. People were desperate.

The result of that meeting has been a long-time coming, but this week it arrived and for once the news was positive.

That Ashburton police have noticed a dip in the number of youth offenders in the district is a real positive for us.

Yes, there are still some individuals out there – but they are being watched closely and with the list of undesirables at its lowest ebb for quite some time, the prospect of getting all our troubled youth off the street, or back on the straight and narrow, now seems better than ever.

The public often give the police in this district a pretty hard time of it.

They are the first group to be criticised for not doing their job properly or for being too slow to respond, but they deserve praise for their efforts in trying to curb the wave of youth crime

that threatened to bubble over around this time last year.

But the challenge will now be maintaining those figures.

If we can keep the list of undesirable youth offenders to below 10 consistently for a period of time, then we have to put some strong systems in place that are both effective and strong.

There is no doubt that more active and involved participation from groups like Safer Ashburton, He Waka Tapu, Acads and education providers will ensure that.

But a special mention must go to our own police youth aid officer, Rob Hooper, who works tirelessly with some of these youngsters in an attempt to get their lives back on track while

also attempting to provide restitution for those impacted by their actions.

But whether or not a change is made to one youngster’s life, doesn’t depend on the involvement of those around them.

They are ultimately responsible for themselves.

If they want to improve their lives and leave crime behind, they are the only ones who can do that.

Those in charge of helping them are only there to guide them on the right path.

And judging by the news this week around the youth crime rates in this district, that path that they’re being guided down is definitely heading in the right direction.

The big little Ashburton performing arts explosion Peter Mac

I

t is hard to imagine our town without the Ashburton Trust Event Centre.

And as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of ATEC, it doesn’t seem all that long ago that Bradfords moved on to the site formerly occupied by the old Regent Theatre and commenced sub-ground level works on the area now occupied by the orchestra pit, stage and fly tower. It was enormously exciting to watch those beginnings and proof that great things could happen if enough determination was shown.

As the structure rose above ground, so did the dreams of the small band of people who began as the Regent Theatre Trust and morphed into an organisation to spearhead this new performing arts and event space in Mid Canterbury.

When nationwide cinema operators Kerridge Odeon announced plans to dispose of the old Regent building back in the 1980s, the Ashburton Operatic Society sprung into action to put the asset in local hands. The Regent Theatre Trust was born.

Purchased freehold for approximately $60,000, the cinema side of the operation was leased out to a private operator, and the theatre was secure as a performance space in local hands for the meantime.

I well remember the old Regent, having worked in it as a projectionist and manager in the 70s. Although opened in 1954, the building previously known as The Majestic, had spent the years since it was gutted by fire in 1937 as an abandoned shell, then grain store, then refurbishment and re-opening in the 50s as The Regent.

In fact, much of the rear end of the Wills Street structure went back to the 19th century when it was built as The Theatre Royal. It had a stage and some very primitive dressing rooms, but little had changed in these areas right up to the time of its eventual demolition to make way for the new complex. There was no room in the wings, no overhead space to fly scenery or lighting, no pit for

the orchestra who sat in front of the stage on sawn-off primary school chairs.

It was a solution of sorts and the Ashburton performing arts had a home, but the building, despite some great efforts to maintain and conserve it, was on borrowed time.

As a kid in the 60s, I can always remember my father who was a founding life member of the Ashburton Operatic Society and has been instrumental in the Regent Theatre Trust from day one, saying ... “what Ashburton needs is a proper theatre, with an orchestra pit and a fly tower”.

After protracted efforts spanning many years, the ultimate dream turned into a hard-won reality.

The tiny team of local community, arts and business people fought hard to make it happen and 10 years ago their efforts were evident for all to embrace.

And embrace it the community most certainly has.

It can be no accident that in the past decade there has been a virtual explosion in output of the performing arts in this town. It must be tremendously satisfying for the old hands of what is now known as Variety Theatre Ash-

burton, to see organisations like the Big Little Theatre Company flourish.

BLTC director Jackie Heffernan agrees that without the catalyst of a modern well-equipped performance venue, the arts would not have progressed to the extent they have.

Heffernan describes the Ashburton situation as quite incredible. “We go to other places around New Zealand and see similar organisations struggling to find a home and facilities like we have here.

“The team at the event centre under Roger Farr take us seriously and go well beyond their brief to make our efforts successful and shine, and not just for our group, but for all users.

“Theatre isn’t just a job, it is about passion whether it is my students bringing stories to life on stage, or the ATEC crew looking at creative ways to problemsolve and create performance technical magic. It has never been about turning young people into stars, it is about creative expression and story-telling and creating a life-long appreciation for live theatre performance.

“That is why we do it.”

Her organisation and the inception and growth of the parent-powered committee The Big Little Theatre Inc. parallels that of ATEC. The development of talent from as young as 6 through to 17 has spawned some spectacular results. A number of students have gone on to roles in major productions in big city centres and, for two years running, exams held under the Trinity College of London saw BLTC Ashburton actors score highest marks in the world.

That’s right – the world! Global domination from Ashburton.

Now, from those tiny shared beginnings 10 years ago, there is a bold new vision. To take a group of her seniors, the 12 to 17-year-olds, to London to study and workshop under the invitation of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the Royal Academy of Performing Arts – climaxing in a production presented on stage at the hallowed Globe Theatre.

Heady stuff by any measure.

Already accommodation has been sorted at the Halls of Residence of the Imperial College of London. The pieces of the picture are starting to fall into place.

Ahead lies a massive drive to raise funds to finance the three-week creative powerhouse experience. The learning and life experience to be gained by these youthful Ashburton participants will be priceless and who knows where some of these performers will end up on stages across the planet, in the years ahead.

It sounds incredibly exciting to me – and I’m not even going.

It is just so brilliant to see what grows and develops when a seed is planted and you refuse to take “no” for an answer.

These are our people and this is their opportunity. Who wouldn’t get on board?

The Ashburton community pulled together 10 years ago to give us our beloved Ashburton Trust Event Centre.

We can do it again to get these young thespians the worldly theatrical experience and training they have proven they so richly deserve.

Let’s get right behind them.

Intermediate team to slug it out in AgrikidsNZ grand final

Ashburton Intermediate School held a special mufti day yesterday to raise funds to help send its AIS Fencers team to the AgrikidsNZ grand final, held as part of the Young Farmer of the Year event.

The three-strong team of Tim Connelly-Whyte, Henry Gray and Austin Watson qualified for the final by finishing third in the Aorangi regional final held in Waimate last month.

A record 50 teams took part in the fiercely contested regional event, which tested the teams’ theoretical and practical skills.

That competition was held over two rounds, the first of which included categories like riparian planting, farm safety, identifying soil types and putting together a shearing handpiece.

They did well enough to qualify for the second round top seven race-off, eventually winning bronze medals and qualifying for the final, which is being held in Invercargill in July.

The boys all live on farms in the Ashburton area and are confident they will perform well in the final.

Their teacher, Hinehau Butcher, said the school this week received some tips and hints from NZ Young Farmers about what might be included in the final.

EU trade deal a step closer – Beef + Lamb Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) and the Meat Industry Association (MIA) welcome the agreement to start the New Zealand-European Union free trade agreement negotiations following the agreement from all European Union member states on the negotiating mandate.

B+LNZ chief executive Sam McIvor said the agreement to start negotiations represents a significant milestone for the sector in the face of growing protectionist rhetoric worldwide.

“The FTA will create a stable and level playing field which is crucial to the growth and future prosperity of the sheep and beef sector and New Zealand as a whole.

“Over 600,000 New Zealand jobs directly depend on international trade, with the red meat sector alone employing over 80,000 people in New Zealand. All these jobs depend on our ability to export competitively and in a stable and predictable trading environment.”

The European Union is an important market for New Zealand

red meat products, worth more than $NZ1.8 billion in the year ended December 2017. It is New Zealand’s largest market by region for sheepmeat exports and second-largest for wool and chilled beef exports. It takes our highest quality and value cuts.

MIA chief executive Tim Ritchie said the sector still faces a range of significant tariff and non-tariff barriers into the European market.

“New Zealand pays approximately $NZ53 million in tariffs per year on its red meat exports to the EU. “A number of competitors, such as Canada, already have an FTA with the EU and New Zealand is only one of six World Trade Organisation members without an EU FTA in place or under negotiation.

Doubts over summit President Donald Trump laboured with South Korea’s Moon Jae-in yesterday to keep the highly anticipated US summit with North Korea on track after Trump abruptly cast doubt that the June 12 meeting would come off.

Setting the stakes sky high, Moon said, “The fate and the future of the Korean Peninsula hinge” on the meeting.

The summit, planned for Singapore, offers a historic chance for peace on the peninsula – but also the risk of an epic diplomatic failure that would allow the North to revive and advance its nuclear weapons programme.

Trump’s new-found hesitation appeared to reflect recent setbacks in efforts to bring about reconciliation between the two Koreas, as well as concern whether the selfproclaimed dealmaker can deliver a nuclear accord with the North’s Kim Jong Un. In an extraordinary public airing of growing uncertainty, Trump said “there’s a very substantial chance” the meeting won’t happen as scheduled.

Seated in the Oval Office with Moon, Trump said Kim had not met unspecified “conditions” for the summit. However, the president also said he believed Kim was “serious” about negotiations, and Moon expressed “every confidence” in Trump’s ability to hold the summit and bring about peace.

Archbishop steps down after abuse cover-up An Australian archbishop said yesterday he will stand aside but does not intend to resign after becoming the most senior Roman Catholic cleric in the world to be convicted of covering up child sex abuse.

Archbishop of Adelaide Philip Wilson was convicted on Tuesday in the Newcastle Local Court, north of Sydney, of concealing the sexual abuse of two altar boys by a pedophile priest in the 1970s.

The 67-year-old who has Alzheimer’s disease was released on bail and faces a prison term of up to two years when he is sentenced next month.

Wilson said he would stand aside on Friday after administrative arrangements were made to manage his archdiocese.

Wilson said he was still discussing the magistrate’s decision with his lawyers.

“While I do so, it is appropriate that, in the light of some of

Before Wilson announced he would step down, Frank Brennan, an Australian Jesuit priest, human rights lawyer and academic, said the move was inevitable.

“There’s no doubt that Archbishop Wilson in recent years ... has been one of the good guys. He has been one of the bishops in the Catholic Church who have been trying to clean things up,” Brennan said.

“But this relates to when he was a young priest. Even someone like him who later got it back in those years was so confined by our culture that it would seem there was no disclosure,” he added.

Urgent warning on show US parenting groups have called for the controversial teen drama 13 Reasons Why to be cancelled due to a plotline which features a graphic rape scene that drives the victim to attempt a school shooting.

The Parents Television Council has issued an “urgent warning” to American parents and schools about the programme and asked creators and distributors Netflix to pull both seasons of the show “because of the potentially harmful content”.

The series was released on Netflix on Friday, the same day that 10 teenagers were killed in the Santa Fe school shooting. The LA premiere for the show was cancelled.

flour, place in casserole dish and brown on both sides (do this in batches to avoid overcrowding the dish). Transfer to a plate as you go.

■ Lower the heat and add another dash of oil. Add the celery, carrot and onion and cook until soft. Add the garlic, bay leaves, orange rind, ground cumin and allspice and cook for a further minute.

■ Return browned beef cheeks to the casserole dish, pour in the

red wine and bring to the boil.

Pour in the beef stock, bring up to the boil again then cover with a disc of baking paper and a tight fitting lid. Place in the oven and cook for 3-3 1/2 hours or until the beef cheeks are almost falling apart. Stir beef cheeks halfway through cooking and check seasoning as required.

■ Remove bay leaves and serve beef cheeks with polenta or mashed potato and carrots that have been cooked in a little water with a teaspoon of honey and butter. Garnish with a sprinkle of fresh parsley.

■ Slow cooker option: Preheat slow cooker for 20 minutes.

Brown ingredients as per recipe and make the sauce, then transfer to preheated slow cooker and slow cook on low for 8 hours.

Ashburton Dahlia Circle The AGM and trophy presentation of the Ashburton Dahlia Circle was held on May 15 at the Stables restaurant. The evening was well attended with a meal first, to start the evening at 6pm.

President Brian Glassey opened the meeting welcoming everyone and accepting apologies. Special mention of our sick members and trusts they will be back with us again soon.

The annual balance sheet was presented and adopted showing a healthy income. Partly due to a successful Dahlia Tuber Stall held at the Farmer’s Market early in November.

Thank you to Alison Donald for the work done in the position of Secretary/Treasurer. She certainly does keep everyone well informed. Noted was the increase in membership this past year, hopefully more people will be keen to come along in the new season. The group will now resume activities again in September.

Patron Graham Gunn was re-elected in this role and then took the chair for election of officers.

Ashburton Golf Club We now have the finalists all sorted out for the Watson Cup and Newton Trophy, and it looks like we have two good games in store. In the Watson, Bill and Jeff showed their superior fitness by taking the Stoddart boys down the 19th and coming up trumps. Then Terry and Robert continued their good form in knocking out cup favourites Chris and Sa with a great win. In the Newton, Charlie and Noel are looking very strong, and they will come up against Hamish and Arkright who aren’t!

As of going to press I don’t know when these games are going to be played, but good luck to all eight players, should be two ding dong battles.

This Saturday we have club champs qualifying round #3, stroke round off blue tees. You need your best two rounds out of a possible five to qualify for the knockout stage which commences on September 1. It is also an RMF Cup counter with points on offer.

News from last Sunday’s weekend pennants, I haven’t got Shanes Alex team result in yet, but Hamish and the Holmes boys had a solid draw against Tinwald at Highfield, Hoppy and the Redpath team came down to earth with a bump, getting beat by Tinwald at home. Then we have the lowly old Patterson team, who are now showing signs of steady improvement, after two big defeats. The boys travelled to Timaru to take on a strong Highfield team on their own course, now some boys just aren’t built for wind and hills. Poor old Bruce, with one leg shorter than the other, really struggled round but still came home with a massive win.

Arkright has lost too much bulk on a recent diet and with his clothes being a bit big for him, the wind turned him into a kite, we had to tether him to his trundler so he didn’t take off. All the stress got to him so a loss ensued. Gaby and Paddy picked up sneaky wins, of course.

Peter Marriott were runners up and Johnny Wright and Neville Bensdorp finishing third.

Our club women’s drawn triples were held on Sunday and once again Rosemary McLaughlin won the trophy along with Karen Bensdorp. Runners up were Ellen Pithie and Jan Guilford, and third was Rewa Kyle and Johnny Wright.

Our club men’s drawn doubles were also held on Sunday, and Richard Browne won this as well along with Eddie Adams, runners up were Neville Bensdorp and Peter Marriott. Third was Jonathan Crum and Mick Little.

We were pleased with the entries for these three competitions and we thank you all for taking part, and a thank you for the helpers behind the scenes.

Ashburton Musical Club The programme for the Ashburton Musical Club was titled Merry Notes In May. The audience was treated to a great variety of items.

It began with five members of the Southern Celtic Fiddle Orchestra playing a selection of Irish and Scottish music in two brackets. Vocal items were given by Abigail Jones who sang Lipstick on your Collar, Homeward Bound, and A Mother’s Love is a Blessing. Peter Rumping sang Love, also The Sunny side of the Street.

Elena Chester played the lively 1st Movement of Sonata in C by Mozart, also on the piano Tamieke Kuipers played a modern Square Dance, Hannah Kuipers another modern piece Hound dog, Hannah and Sam Kuipers in a piano duet played Bluebird by Alexis Ffrench and Sam then played Improvisation by Faure.

Anna Petrus played My Computer and the theme from the film spirit. Her father Michael played on his guitar two original pieces, one was dad when are you going to build me a big Lego car.

Ashburton Photographic Society April saw members being reminded how we should be mounting photos for our competitions.

All members that were at the April meeting had to mount a 6x4 photo into a frame.

All photos for our print competitions have to be mounted, so doing this correctly is very important. We also covered resizing the digital images and a new process for uploading these through our website. This will save time for the Competition Secretary.

A trip to Peel Forest and the Dennison Track saw 16 members heading down a one hour walk and staying there for up to three hours. Spending so much time walking this track with a like-minded group of people was ideal.

We took our time and were able to locate many interesting species of fungi for our Natural History competition. We had to send out a search party for two members after we had lunch and they still had not come back.

Grey Power Ashburton The president Peter Thomas welcomed 60 plus members to the Annual General Meeting of Grey Power Ashburton.

Apologies were received from; Barbara and Denis Blincoe; Pat Gibson; Eunice Green and George; Peter moved that these be accepted, seconded by Betty, carried.

Peter asked that members stand for minute of silence in memory of committee member Blair Stringer who passed away recently.

Minutes of the AGM 2017 copies had been circulated and as there were no amendments or business arising, Secretary Natalie Blampied moved they be accepted; seconded by Sheila Graham, carried.

President’s Report – The report from the President was on the back of the minutes and as there were no questions, Peter moved its acceptance seconded by Colin Cameron, carried.

Ashburton Financial Statement – copies of the audited financial statement had been circulated, and as there were no queries Treasurer Sheila Graham moved that it be accepted, seconded by Trevor Gamblin, carried.

Peter then introduced the speakers for the afternoon, Councillors Diane Rawlinson and Selwyn Price.

They adopted an informal style of addressing members while seated, and sharing the microphone. After briefly introducing themselves they spoke of their positions at the Council and soon covered several topics including roading; footpaths; the employment of a new CEO; and the renewal of the CBD, and the consultation paper currently out on this topic.

Questions from the floor covered a variety of topics including not contributing to the stadium project in Christchurch, problem trees on properties, there was lively discussion on several other topics.

Trevor Gamblin passed a vote of thanks and presented them each with a fruit tray.

The raffle was drawn and prizes distributed.

Councillor Selwyn Price then conducted the election of officers as follows; President - Peter Thomas; Vice President - Colin Cameron; Secretary - Natalie Blampied; Treasurer - Sheila Graham; Membership Sec. - Shirley Stringer Committee Bill Allnut; Cath Carr; Trevor Gamblin; Betty King; Greer Ricketts.

As there were no further nominations from the floor Selwyn declared the above duly elected. The meeting concluded 3:10pm and afternoon tea was served.

Next meeting June 18 – speaker will be John Collyns from Retirement Villages Association.

MSA Golf Section On Sunday May 20, sixteen members of the MSA Golf Section with three other people who are going on the Australian Trip with the MSA Golf Section travelled to the Everglades Golf Course in Christchurch.

All had a great day and was enjoyable; with the overall winners of Paris Competition were Wayne Smith and Trish Clarke and runners-up Charlie and Maddie Smith.

Winning man was Richard Thompson and winning lady was Jacki Beardsley who has just joined the section, so welcome. The day went well even through Steve had to be picked up as was late and Richard remembered his golf shoes, until next time.

Who can topple Celtic A?

They got through round one of Mid Canterbury Netball’s ACL premier one competition unbeaten, now the question on everyone’s lips is can anyone topple Celtic A? Celtic A have set the benchmark this season after putting in a strong showing against teams from around Canterbury in the pre-season inter-centre competition and they continued that form into the local competition.

In every premier one game they’ve played so far this season they’ve surpassed 30 goals by full time, but last week against United A they showed that they weren’t perfect. For the first time this season they failed to win a quarter, with Hampstead A holding them to 8-all in the first quarter of their final round match.

But Celtic A soon hit their straps and ran away with the game and they’ll look to start strong against Methven A – the team they defeated in last season’s semi-finals – at the EA Networks Centre tonight.

Meanwhile last year’s beaten finalists Ashburton College A finished the first round on a high with a last-gasp win over United A. The win came off the back of a big loss in the first round of the Canterbury secondary schools’ SuperNet competition the night before.

Girls have chance to test out tackle pads

One day, the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union (MCRU) would love to field a women’s representative rugby team.

But to do that, they need to get more girls playing rugby, so tomorrow they’re setting some wheels in motion which they hope will eventually lead them to that end goal.

A have-a-go rugby session aimed at girls in Year 5 and 6 will

be held at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds which will allow girls to try the sport, learn some skills, and give the often-dreaded tackling a go in a safe and controlled environment, MCRU rugby development officer Jason Ree said.

It’s part of New Zealand Rugby’s nationwide push to get more young girls playing rugby, and it’s the first time a session has been held specifically aimed at girls in that nine to 10 age bracket in Mid

Canterbury, Ree said.

He said a number of girls play rugby in the younger Rippa Rugby grades in Mid Canterbury, but girls can only play in mixed teams with boys up until under 13 level.

Ree said there are a handful of girls playing under 13 rugby with the boys this season and they’d love to see those girls continue, and more to join them.

“We want to give them as many opportunities as possible,” Ree

said. He’d love to see Mid Canterbury field an under 15 rep team, and a schoolgirls’ rep team take to the field one day.

“Eventually, the big picture is, we want a Mid Canterbury rep team,” Ree said.

The have-a-go session will be held at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds from 4pm until 5pm on Friday.

Registration is not required and girls are welcome to turn up on the day.

All Blacks call up Chiefs’ rookie prop Rookie Chiefs prop Karl Tu’inukuafe is the seventh uncapped player called into the All Blacks squad, capitalising on injuries to a host of rival props.

A hamstring injury suffered

by Tim Perry during an All Blacks training run on Tuesday has allowed 25-year-old Tu’inukuafe to continue a dizzying rise.

Having failed to earn a Super Rugby contract in 2018, he made a series of reserve bench

appearances for the Chiefs following injuries to their test props, Kane Hames, Atu Moli and Nepo Laulala.

A broken ankle to Aidan Ross a month ago handed a first start to Tu’inukuafe, who has been a cog in one of the strongest scrums in the competition.

He will join the All Blacks squad at a camp in Christchurch next week as they build towards the three-test home series against France in June.

the thinning loosehead options available to Steve Hansen because of injuries and the international retirement of Crusaders loosehead Wyatt Crockett.

Perry was one of six uncapped players in the initial group of 32 announced on Sunday.

History as top female players offered contracts Skipper Fiao’o Faamausili has put her retirement on hold with the naming of 28 of New Zealand’s top female rugby players becoming the first-ever 15s players to be offered Black Ferns contracts.

The 28 contracted players include 17 Black Ferns from the 2017 World Cup winning side.

Black Ferns Head Coach Glenn Moore said Faamausili was encouraged to lace up her boots and put herself in a position to be considered for the Black Ferns again to bolster the experience among what is likely to be a mixed squad of familiar and new players.

“We are thrilled to offer Fi a contract. She is as fit as she’s ever been and is super passionate about being inolved. There are a number of new faces among those named and to have Fi’s skills and experience to call on will be invaluable. She also brings fantastic skills in her position and it’s an area we need to develop with newer players. She can help us with that.”

“Among this squad are a number of very talented young players who have been working hard in their clubs and provincial unions.

Our talent identification programme has helped us develop depth in our wider player pool and the Black Ferns’ performance at the World Cup has given players something to aspire to.”

Moore said the 28 players announced yesterday weren’t necessarily guaranteed a spot in the 2018 Black Ferns team and they would need to continue to work hard in their club teams and provinces to be considered for the black jersey.

“We have a Black Ferns training camp in mid-June when we’ll get a much better idea of how everyone is tracking. There’s also the possibility we’ll offer a contract to players outside of the initial contracted squad.”

Moore said there were two more contracted positions to be filled.

NZR recently announced the Black Ferns would play two Test matches against Australia for the Laurie O’Reilly Memorial Trophy. Both August Tests will be double-header fixtures with the All Blacks’ Bledisloe Cup matches versus Australia.

On November 3, the Black Ferns will face USA Eagles women in a triple header with the Maori All Blacks v USA Eagles and Ireland v Italy at Soldier Field in Chicago.

NZR Head of Women’s Rugby Cate Sexton said the signing of contracts, under the newly introduced Black Ferns Performance Programme, marked a significant moment in rugby and reflected the growing interest in women’s rugby in New Zealand as well as globally.

Injuries take toll on AshColl

An injury-plagued Ashburton College senior girls’ basketball side was beaten 88-58 by Rangi Ruru in Canterbury secondary school basketball’s Whelan Trophy series in Ashburton on Tuesday night.

Ashburton College coach Mark Douglas said that with a number of players out with injury for a game against such a traditionally strong side Rangi, it was always going to be a tough night at the office, but it wasn’t all bad.

Rangi got off to a flying start but Ashburton College’s nevergive-up attitude saw them win the second and third quarters.

The home side ran out of juice in the final quarter though, with Rangi Ruru heading back to Christchurch the winners.

“It’s definitely still progress.

That’s our third game and to take two quarters off one of the top teams, that’s progress,” Douglas said.

Ashburton College lost to Christchurch Girls’ High School in round one but beat Cashmere High School in round two.

Life is about to get a whole lot harder next week though, with top seeds St Andrew’s College their next opponent.

Ashburton College were seeded last for this year’s competition, and Douglas said their goal was to defy that seeding.

If they could shake the current injury woes that are plaguing them, that would help.

Douglas said the battle of the Strawbridge sisters – Ashlee for Rangi Ruru, and Jasmine for Ashburton College – didn’t eventuate on Tuesday night with Ashlee (knee) and Jasmine (concussion) both ruled out with injury, but Ashburton College’s long injury list did allow another set of sisters to take to the court. Ella Pearson and Kathleen Anderson were both called up from the junior girls’ team for the match, with Kathleen joining her older sister Summer on the court.

They took on Rangiora New Life School – a relatively new side to the competition – in their first Thomson Trophy home game of the season and came away with an 89-55 win despite also having a number of players out thanks to injury.

Coach Brian Kerr said he had to call four players up from the B team for the match, and they all made the most of the opportunity.

“With injuries and a couple of withdrawals we haven’t really had a full squad for a while, but these young fellas, they are stepping up and doing really well, and a couple have put their hands up and said ‘I’m the guy for the job’,” Kerr said.

For the first quarter, college played a man-to-man defence and took a small lead into the second quarter, before a change to a zone defence and a marked increase in defensive intensity allowed college to force turnovers

as the game progressed.

That, along with securing the defensive boards, allowed college to get its fast break game going, where both Marc Juntilla (22 points) and Sam Pearce (20 points) excelled, Kerr said.

By the end of the second quarter Ashburton’s lead had been stretched to more than 20 points and they went on to dominate the second half.

The Ashburton College boys take on Papanui High School in Christchurch in the next round.

ABs’ stars in doubt for first against the French

Strong field on court

The Celtic Squash Club will be holding their annual Ray McBeth Memorial tournament this weekend, at their Keenans Road courts.

It is the 29th running of the tournament, named after a man instrumental in forging a superb relationship between Ashburton Celtic and the Oamaru squash clubs, before he was tragically killed in a car accident.

This year’s edition has attracted good numbers, with 56 players battling it out over seven grades; five men’s and two women’s.

Those numbers mean the tournament will begin tonight for many local players, with the Collegiate courts also being required for some Saturday games.

Jackson Beresford, an A1 from Christchurch, takes the mantle of top seed in what is a very strong men’s open grade, but he will have to be on his game with three A2s, Charles Barker, Keidah Bungard and Nick Wilson filling the other seeds.

Celtic is represented by Kevin Milne (B2) in that grade.

Last year Lily Rae from Timaru managed to get the better of her mother Vicki in the ladies’ final of this tournament.

This year she returns as a B1, still a junior, with Ella Knutson (B2, Christchurch Football), Vicki Rae (B2) and Julie Smith (B2, Ashburton) seeded to give her the most competition.

Home club Celtic is represented by Kirsty Clay (C2) in the top grade.

Celtic also provides the top seed in the men’s A, with John McDonnell the man to beat, while Ryan Ko, a C1 from Burnside, demonstrates the depth of the competition by filling top spot in the men’s B. Adam Clement (C1) from the host club has his name at the head of the men’s C grade, while Matt Parsons is top seed in men’s D. Celtic’s Melissa Wilson will have the big target on her back in the women’s A grade.

The tournament finals are scheduled to begin at 4pm on Saturday at Celtic, with the men’s open finalists on court at 7pm.

Squash in the Midlands catchment, of which Mid Canterbury is part of, is in full swing, with the Tuesday night interclub compe-

tition as hugely competitive as always.

This year there are seven teams fighting it out for Division 1 honours, 13 teams in Division 2, 13 in Division 3, nine in Division 4 and six teams in the newly-created Division 5, which aims to encourage lower graded players to experience interclub atmosphere.

There is an increase of two teams on last year’s competition, and teams will be battling highintensity rounds until the finals, which are schedule for Friday, August 10.

Of the 16 squash clubs in the district, 14 have at least one team in the competition, meaning that every week clubs from Oamaru and Fairlie right up to Rakaia have players in action somewhere in the district.

Rockets break Warriors’ winning home streak Chris Paul pounded the ball down demonstratively on Stephen Curry’s home court in sheer delight.

And maybe he sent a little message: These Rockets are for real and very much remain in the championship chase.

Houston handled the defending champions in their hostile, imposing home arena and sus-

tained the latest second-half flurry by Curry, getting 30 points from James Harden and another 27 from Paul to even the Western Conference finals at two games apiece with a 95-92 victory Tuesday night.

Curry scored 28 points and Kevin Durant added 27 points and 12 rebounds but the Warriors missed their final five shots from

the floor and their NBA-record post-season winning streak at home ended at 16 games.

The Rockets shook off a 41-point embarrassment in Game 3, a 12-0 deficit to start and another big run by the Warriors in the third, then won it with defense down the stretch.

“We’re a team. We’re really good as a team,” Harden said.

Paul rebounded Klay Thompson’s miss just before the final buzzer sounded for the first time and celebrated in front of a stunned, yellow-clad home crowd. A replay determined Shaun Livingston fouled Paul before the game ended, so Paul made a free throw with 0.5 seconds left.

The first test against France is a little more than two weeks away and while the All Blacks can’t be certain that both Sam Whitelock and Sam Cane will be available, they remain confident they will be.

Whitelock, having missed the game last week against the Blues due to feeling some concussionlike symptoms, has again not been named by the Crusaders for their top of the table clash with the Hurricanes.

The newly appointed All Blacks captain is still not reporting as 100 per cent right and the Crusaders have opted to give him another week off as a result.

His symptoms are believed to be mild but neither the Crusaders nor All Blacks will allow him back on to the field until they are certain he is symptom-free.

Everyone is hopeful that will be the case by next week, but the nature of concussion is such that there is no guarantee. But given he was well enough to train in the early part of last week before being withdrawn, the All Blacks are confident that their captain will be available to play in the first test at Eden Park on June 9.

Cane, like Whitelock, will also not be playing this weekend as he’s still being troubled by a minor stomach injury.

He’s been with the All Blacks in camp, having extensive treatment and says he isn’t overly troubled by the injury but frustrated that after a few weeks, it still hasn’t quite fully come right.

And because it hasn’t yet sorted itself out, he’s reluctant to put a date on his probable return to action. But again, the All Blacks coaches are expecting him to be fit and available to play in the first test.

“There’s no real time frame on it,” explained Cane. “It feels like it’s almost there but it’s probably not quite so unfortunately another week.”

The flanker is doing his best to avoid rushing back and re-aggravating the injury before the opening test. “It’s hard not to think about those sort of things and try and rush and push it. But I’ll do my best to be patient to get it right properly.”

Injuries were the story of last season and they have dominated the narrative in Super Rugby this year, too and the All Blacks are wary that they have a number of players in their probable match day 23 who are short of football.

Owen Franks only returned to play from major Achilles surgery in late April and will miss the next two games due to suspension.

Joe Moody, Liam Squire and Ryan Crotty have also had their seasons disrupted by injuries worries.

Top mare Bonneval returning to work Reigning New Zealand Horse of the Year Bonneval’s return to her Cambridge base is imminent.

The multiple Group One winner and the country’s top-rated performer was sidelined earlier this year with a suspensory ligament issue.

The winner of the Gr.1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield in the spring off the back of a first-up success in the Gr.2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley, Bonneval subsequently spelled and was being prepared for the Gr.1 Haunui Farm WFA Classic (1600m) before she was injured.

“She’s looking good and she’ll be back in the stable next week, along with Jon Snow and we are hopefully looking toward the Melbourne spring with them again,” said Murray Baker, who trains in partnership with Andrew Forsman.

When Mid Canterbury Netball’s premier two competition got under way this season, a new team full of familiar faces made its debut.

For other teams, Mt Somers A was an unknown quantity, but they quickly found out this new team was pretty handy on the netball court.

With a number of ex-premier grade players within their ranks, Mt Somers A cruised through round one of premier two unbeaten and earned themselves automatic promotion to premier one.

Tonight at the EA Networks Centre they take to the court in

the top flight for the first time ever against Ashburton College A, and Mt Somers are just as intrigued as anyone to see how they’ll shape up, team spokesperson Kate Oliver said.

“I’m expecting we will be a really competitive team and our aim is to go as far as we can, and we don’t see any reason why that can’t be a semi or a final,” Oliver said.

Mt Somers is a team made up primarily of ex-premier grade players who wanted to get back into the game socially, but still wanted to play in the premier grade. Some were wanting to get back into the sport after having children – after a quick count-up

Oliver said there were 18 kids between the Mt Somers players.

Some – like Oliver – hadn’t played premier netball for around six years. They wanted to get back into it, but they didn’t want to have to trial, and with so many kids between them trying to find a time that would suit everyone to practise was never going to be easy. They wanted to play premier netball without all the added demands.

So, Oliver came up with an idea.

With about five ladies keen to play they set about finding enough to field a full team, and then a club for them to play for. They succeeded on both.

accommodate them, Oliver said.

A club that had previously only had a social team, the club had doubled in size with the addition of the A team.

“They’re pretty stoked to have a team in there, and they knew we were going to be a team that was going to be competitive,” Oliver said.

Competitive they have most certainly been, winning all of their premier two games, with Celtic B the only side to get within a handful of goals of them in premier two.

Their biggest winning margin this season so far was 46 goals.

one her side was looking forward to. She said Mt Somers was a relaxed and social team, but they still wanted to win.

“If we lose we will be gutted, but it’s probably not the main aim of us getting together, it’s about playing competitive netball and doing it in a way that fits in with our outside needs,” Oliver said.

They didn’t have set practises, but if time and family life allowed, they might get together for a bit of training.

“That’s the flexibility that we wanted. We can sort of come and go as per what we need,” Oliver said.

“The aim is to win, but the aim is to have a lot fun along the way.”
