District court news P5
A Rakaia dairy farming business is this year’s winner of the prestigious Ahuwhenua Trophy BNZ Maori Excellence in Farming Award. It is the first time in the 83 year history of the competition a South Island dairy farm has taken the award, worth $40,000. The proprietors of Rakaia Incorporation’s farm Tahu a Tao, have a long and proud history dating back to 1886. Rakaia Incorporation was chosen from two other finalists, Ngai Tahu Farming Limited, in North Canterbury, and Tewi Trust based in the south Waikato. Tahu a Tao, originally designated as a resting place for travellers, was converted to dairying in 1996 under the guidance of consultant John Donkers and operates under a 50/50 sharemilking arrangement. Current sharemilkers Mark and Jul-

ie Cressey are in their ninth season on the property. Ahuwhenua Trophy management committee chairman Kingi Smiler said the achievements of all this year’s finalists mirror the aspirational vision of Sir Apirana Ngata and Lord Bledisloe who inaugurated this competition in 1932. The presentation of the Ahuwhenua Trophy came at the end of an intensive six month process, accessing applications to single out the three finalists at a function at parliament. Each finalist held a field day on their respective properties, which were open to the public but part of the judging process.
