Kiwi’s cousin one big bird The tiny, flightless kiwi doesn’t share its closest ancestors with the Australian emu as previously thought, but with the massive Madagascan elephant bird which weighed in at up to 275kg and stood as high as three metres. New DNA research at the University of Adelaide, published in the journal Science on Friday, overturns previous thinking on the ancestry of New Zealand’s national bird. Research published late last year suggested the kiwi – which weighs up to 3.3kg – may have descended from the same bird as the emu, raising hackles among patriotic New Zealanders. Vandals strike An outdoor, lifelike sculpture of a man sleepwalking in his underpants that provoked some concern on a Massachusetts college campus in February has been vandalised. The fibreglass sculpture at Wellesley College was defaced this week by yellow paint. It was one of several properties on campus vandalised. Some students at the women’s college had criticised the statue as threatening and demanded that it be removed.

Council buys land on route path

The Ashburton District Council is on the verge of finalising $1.3 million to purchase two more properties to pave the way for the second Ashburton bridge.

The revelations came before Thursday’s extraordinary council meeting where councillors decided to confirm the independent commissioners’ recommendation to go ahead with land designation for a corridor of land east of Tinwald for a new bridge to be built.

John Rooney said $700,000 had already been spent for a lifestyle block on Carters Terrace, and there was a further property sale due to be settled next week.

Negotiations were also underway with another landowner.

He said that could total about $2m for the three properties.

“People are at different stages of their lives, and these three people who approached the council have made the decision that they want some certainty in their lives,” Mr Rooney said.

Because their land was within the area the council designated

under its notice of requirement for the public work, Mr Rooney said if the landowners wanted to sell their property they had the option to do so to council.

If the council agreed, it would have to do so with a current market valuation based on the “highest and best use” of the property.

That could mean property owners on land that has the potential to be subdivided could be compensated, but “if the requiring authority needs the land you can’t go out, without the requiring authorities’ permission, and

build a $3m house in an attempt to ramp up the value”.

However, if the council did not want to purchase the land, the owner could go to the Environment Court which can make a decision on whether the council should make the purchase or not.

Following Thursday’s meeting it may not be an easy process if land owners in the area remain stubborn.

“If the council confirms the designation, then there’s obviously further land purchases to be considered, and hopefully

that will be on a basis of willing buyer, willing seller.”

Mr Rooney said if the proposed route did not go ahead, the council had a “waiver” which meant it could sell the properties on the open market.

Councillor Russell Ellis said some landowners just wanted some certainty, and it was not a major risk considering the properties prior to yesterday’s meeting.

“If the council found it didn’t need the land, they could sell it on later and probably not lose money,” he said.

Councillor explains his conflict of interest

Ashburton district councillor Darryl Nelson says he did not have a conflict of interest on the Ashburton bridge project when it came to furthering the process, but did when it came to pivotal decisions.

Mr Nelson was speaking after he unexpectedly pulled out from all debate and voting at a heated extraordinary meeting on Thursday due to what he believed was a conflict of interest.

With councillors divided at six-all, the decision left mayor Angus McKay to use his casting vote to confirm the land designation application for the future construction of a second Ashburton River bridge.

Mr Nelson said he did not want to leave himself open to a legal challenge because his sister-in-law and her husband were directly affected by the chosen route through east Tinwald.

He was keen to point out he stood aside when the council

decided to carry on and investigate potential second bridge routes around late 2010.

“All the way through when I took part in the debate it was to further the process only, but when it came to a final crunch on Thursday I felt I had a conflict of interest again.”

Mr Nelson said he spoke with chief executive Andrew Dalziel, who agreed his withrawal “might not be a bad idea”.

Mr Dalziel said because it was a quasi-judicial decision on Thursday “the risks were escalating”.

Having what may be perceived as a non-pecuniary conflict of interest could cost the council thousands if a legal challenge was brought forward.

Although he refrained from voting on Thursday, Mr Nelson said he was pleased with the result, and there were “possibly” other councillors who had a stronger conflict of interest than himself who took part.

“But that’s entirely up to the individual,” he said.

Victim’s parents heartbroken

The parents of an Ashburton man murdered in Christchurch last month say their hearts are broken.

Cory Protos’s parents Jimmy and Gail Protos yesterday released a statement, which painted a picture of a cheeky man who had made mistakes, but had lived life to the fullest.

in the Christchurch High Court last week and pleaded not guilty.

Mr and Mrs Protos – who now live in Western Australia said their lives changed forever when they heard their son had been murdered.

“Cory was a cheeky, loveable man, who liked his sports and lived life to the fullest, the way he wanted,” they said.

“He was a talented builder who had vision and honour in what he would build or create.

Cory – affectionately known as

Grom - was a person who had dreams and ambitions that were of love and life.”

He knew who he was and loved his friends and family.

“He was always there for anyone who needed his help or just to talk.

“Our son will be sorely missed by all his family, friends, and their children; who were part of his life. His little friends will miss him.”

Menz Shed open day attracts members

Ashburton’s newly formed Menz Shed had its first open day yesterday and drew a steady crowd of people through the door. It will hold another open day today.

Men and women turned up to have a look at the new facilities just out of town.

Steering committee member Bronie McMurtrie said in a matter of hours 25 men had signed up for membership.

She said they expected people would turn out to view the facility but were encouraged by those interested enough to commit with membership.

The steering committee put out an invitation to people interested in joining the Menz Shed to view the facility and see what was offered. They could also sign up during the open days.

The concept was to bring men together in one community space to share skills, have a laugh, and work on practical tasks – individually or as a group.

It would suit retired men, working men, or young men keen to share skills, learn skills

They called his death “senseless” but wanted to thank all who had given help, sent cards, called, left messages and sent letters.

“This has given us strength knowing the love that was out there for Cory and us.”

Samson will appear in the Christchurch District Court again on July 18 but it’s likely her trial will begin on April 11 next year.

Truck driver crashes A truck driver’s head was held above water by a passerby after his vehicle slid off a bridge into the Keyburn river in Central Otago.

Police said the cab of the vehicle was crushed when it landed in 1m of water about 3.40pm yesterday.

The 57-year-old driver was trapped but managed to keep his nose and mouth above water until a passing motorist came to his aid. She held the driver’s head above water until emergency services arrived. Police said he was cut free and flown to Dunedin Hospital with lacerations and possible head injuries, which were not considered to be lifethreatening.

‘It’s a weekend full of weather’

Severe gales and snow showers will see winter come early to parts of the country this weekend.

MetService is warning of strong winds and severe gales in the east of the country from Canterbury up to the Hawke’s Bay, while southern centres are

expected to get a dusting of snow.

“It’s a weekend chock-full of weather,” MetService Meteorologist John Law said.

“Sunday is going to feel pretty cold across New Zealand with frigid temperatures combining with a brisk southerly wind to produce an extremely low wind chill effect.”

Weatherwatch analyst Philip Duncan said the wind would come and go in surges over much of the country, including Christchurch, Wellington, Hamilton, Tauranga and Auckland.

“There’s no one time that it’s going to peak - it’s going to be at various times over the next few days.”

However winds would probably be strongest on Sunday, hitting up to 140km/h on exposed hilltops, he said.

The upper North Island was on the edges on the storm system so would escape the worst of the weather.

“Northern New Zealand will be less exposed to severe weather but certainly will be exposed

to the cold change.”

Snow was highly likely in Queenstown on Sunday or Monday, with a moderate risk of snow flurries on the higher parts of Dunedin and potentially Invercargill on Sunday, he said.

“The south is having chop and change with the temperatures at the moment.”

National judges inspect local competition entries

Graham Coe knows what it takes to make a perfect house.

For the past 16 years he’s been a judge in New Zealand’s House of the Year competition and yesterday he brought his judge’s eye to Ashburton, to take in every inch of the new properties put forward for this year’s awards.

Mr Coe – a builder by trade – has built hundreds of homes in his time and has inspected around the country for the awards, ranging in value from small, cheaper new builds, right through to the high end – including one home worth around $30 million.

But more money doesn’t necessarily make for a better home.

Higher end homes can often be simply statements – homes, no matter what they cost to build, still have to be homely and liveable, Mr Coe said.

As a judge, he looks at every inch of a home. For each home the judges have 2000 marks available to allocate. Two-thirds of those marks are allocated for workmanship.

There are 14 homes in the Mid and South Canterbury area vying for the title of the region’s best in the 2014 Registered Master Builders’ New Zealand House of the Year Awards.

Mid/South Canterbury’s winners will be announced at a function in Ashburton on July 11.

Judges are currently on the road judging each of the 317 homes across New Zealand put forward for the awards, ranging from new homes and show homes, to renovations and builders’ own homes.

The Canterbury area has seen a 29 per cent increase in entries from 2013, reflecting the completion of homes throughout the post-earthquake rebuild.

Crash victim siblings farewelled

BY TIMOTHY BROWN The laughter at an upbeat service gave way to grief as North Taieri siblings Danielle and Shannon Kiriau were farewelled yesterday with a stirring haka.

Close friends, with purple and green bandanas hanging from their pockets or around their necks, consoled each other as tears flowed at the end

of the service. More than 500 mourners were at Campbell and Sons Chapel, in Mosgiel, yesterday. Police were required to control traffic in Gordon Rd after the service.

Dozens paid tribute to Danielle, 17, and Shannon, 22, who died when the Honda Integra car in which they were passengers went out of control and crashed on Sunday morning.

The Rev Tau BenUnu, a rela-

tive of the siblings, said everyone was in “shock” and searching for answers following their deaths.

The pair’s older brother Shane Kiriau gave the eulogy.

“These guys won’t be forgotten and will be loved forever,” he said. Danielle and Shannon had 11 brothers and sisters and while the “big family” was a “bit messy” it was very close.

The service was studded

with moments of laughter and many speakers kept the mood light with their stories of the siblings’ “mischief ”.

However, the reality of their loss set in when the lights dimmed and a photographic montage of the siblings was played.

The outpouring of grief continued as the pair’s caskets were carried out by family and friends.

The Ashburton Bridge Club is opening its doors to people interested in learning how to play the card game.

Bridge club member, and national champion Bev Smith said the club would host beginner sessions every Wednesday evening from June 4.

Classes would be taken by tutor Kay Robb and run for 10 weeks. It cost $20, but included subscription until the end of the year.

“We are going to open the doors to people to see what it’s all about. People can come along and see if they think it’s for them,” Bev said.

The card game had the potential to take people into national tournaments or could be enjoyed at a social level.

Bev, along fellow club member Mary Buckland won the New Zealand Women’s Interprovincial Bridge Championships in early December, under the Canterbury umbrella.

They won the title alongside Christchurch women Jane Skipper and Jane Lennon.

A quad bike rider has fled after leading police on a pursuit through the city yesterday. Police were called to Riccarton after members of the public saw the man riding erratically about 10.40am, Inspector Mike Coulter of southern police communications said. Police had found the quad bike on Golden Elm Lane, about five minutes after the chase began, but the rider was nowhere in the area, he said. “The guy abandoned the quad bike and did a runner through some properties and alleys. “(Police) were talking to some people, but as far as I’m aware they haven’t made an arrest yet,” Mr Coulter said.

One-punch killer jailed The mother of trainee teacher Tarun Asthana would often worry her son would get into trouble on a night out, and last year her worst fears came true when he was killed by a single blow.

In the High Court at Auckland yesterday, former Navy sailor Grenville David McFarland was jailed for two years and four months after earlier pleading guilty to the manslaughter of 25-year-old Mr Asthana.

He suffered a fatal head injury after he was punched by McFarland and struck his head on the pavement outside a central Auckland McDonald’s in the early hours of November 2 last year.

McFarland, 27, had just witnessed Mr Asthana have an altercation with a woman.

In a victim impact statement read to the court yesterday, Mr Asthana’s mother Yvette Asthana said her son’s “sheer cheekiness” got him in trouble.

er thought that his blow would have killed my Tarun.

“I hope that in time he would have realised there was a better way of dealing with the situation rather than having to use his fist.”

The Asthanas came to New Zealand eight years ago and Mr Asthana developed a love of the outdoors and an affinity with children.

“Unfortunately Tarun came under peer pressure and got pulled into the drinking culture of this country. As a mother I was always wary of what could happen, but he insisted that he was always safe,” Mrs Asthana

said. The court was told she had accepted an apology from McFarland and the two parties has undergone restorative justice.

Defence lawyer Ron Mansfield argued for his client to avoid jail. He said McFarland was remorseful and not at risk of further offending.

McFarland had walked away from Mr Asthana after he hit him, but didn’t realise how bad the “unintended tragedy” was and did not mean to cause such harm.

When he found out how seriously Mr Asthana was hurt he immediately reported to the Navy, which he had since resigned from, and police.

But while she accepted his remorse and other positive factors, Justice Pamela Andrews said only a jail sentence was appropriate.

Children hit by car One of the two young children struck by a car in Remuera yesterday afternoon has been discharged from hospital. The other child is in a stable condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The two were hit by a car on on Lillington Rd, Remuera, shortly before 3.20pm, police said.

Both were taken to Starship hospital.

He placed his food on the ground and walked towards Mr Asthana and saying, “you’re being a ******* ****”, and punched him once on the left side of his face.

Mr Asthana struck his head heavily on the ground and was knocked unconscious.

McFarland left the scene without helping him. Mr Asthana was placed on life support at Auckland Hospital, which was turned off three days later.

Driver stable A truck driver who crashed into Buller river and was saved after a dramatic two-hour rescue is in a stable condition. A whitewater rafting expert, jetboat, and a raft were involved in rescuing the driver, aged about 50, who was trapped in his partially submerged cab. The driver had been travelling south on State Highway 6 towards Murchison in an empty logging truck about 10am on Thursday when the truck failed to take a bend, went through a fence, across a paddock and over a 30 metre bank into the river, police said.

He was stabilised and flown to Nelson Hospital, and is now in a stable condition in intensive care, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Concerns for baby Authorities are concerned for the welfare of a 10-month-old baby after his mother stopped contact with Child, Youth and Family earlier this month. Police were trying to find 20-year-old Nikki Cribb and her son Bailey, who are believed to have travelled out of the Auckland area. Ms Cribb had not been in contact with CYFs since May 7, police spokeswoman Beth Bates said. Police and CYFS had concerns for the welfare of Bailey and anyone who had seen Ms Cribb was asked to contact those agencies, she said. The pair might be in the Hamilton or Tokoroa areas.

It is getting harder for the first-home buyer to get on to the property ladder and with Ashburton’s economy booming, New Zealand buyers are snapping up properties in the district as investments. Reporter Toni Williams investigates.

Investors squeeze first-home buyers C ashed up property investors from inside and outside the district are targeting Ashburton’s rental market with multiple housing portfolios.

There are many with up to 10 property investments.

Real Estate New Zealand/ Ashburton owner Trevor Hurley said several property owners who used his company had multiple investments.

There were those that had from seven to 10 properties each.

Ashburton was a good investment option. His company alone had four property managers and managed the largest rental portfolio in town.

“A lot of our owners are

from outside Ashburton, so they obviously see Ashburton as a very good investment opportunity,” Mr Hurley said.

There were those who had lived in Ashburton but moved and kept property as an investment or others who saw the town as a good entry level investment, especially with capital gain in the area, he said.

“It’s such a good area with opportunity for job prospects, and employment normally dictates a lot of things (like real estate) in an area.”

Mr Hurley said people bought in various suburbs as they had different investment needs. They did not just target cheap housing.

“Most people buy across

He said they were people from all walks of life and included those semi-retired, former farmers and business people. But there were also those that surfed the internet and saw Ashburton as a good capital gain and investment area.

Other districts, like tourist destination Queenstown, had highs and lows, but Mid

Canterbury had a reasonable and steady market.

Other real estate agents in town agreed.

Property Brokers’ Hamish McLeod said there was international interest from Australia, but also domestic interest from people in Auckland and Christchurch.

Bayleys residential specialist Debbie Boon said many were from Canterbury.

“We have had a lot of inquiries – a lot of people from Christchurch because the prices are a lot more up there and they can get a similar house here for a lot less,” Mrs Boon said.

She said most looked at a price range between $200,000 and $300,000.

RENTALS The Ministry of Business and Innovation and Employment (MBIE) identify the market rent for properties nationwide.

The median rent for a three-bedroom house in Mid Canterbury between November and April was $330. It was $285 for a two-bedroom house.

During the same six month period there were 337 tenancy bonds lodged with the MBIE from the district - 192 bonds were received for three-bedroom houses, 51 bonds for two-bedroom houses, 40 bonds for fourbedroom houses, nine for five plus bedroom houses, 12 for one-bedroom flats and 33 for two-bedroom flats.

They were often working age and had available money.

Whether they were cashed up from insurance payouts and unable to buy in the city was unclear.

But Mrs Boon said whatever their reasons they had done their research about property options in Ashburton.

“They might be renting up there and look at this as an investment, who knows.

“If they can’t get into the property market up there because it’s too dear, down the track when they cash it in, they may then have enough money to get back into the Christchurch market.

“It’s a good way to do it,” she said.

MEDIAN PRICE The median house sale price in Mid Canterbury last month was $310,000.

While latest figures from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand said the median price was higher than the same time last year, but there were fewer sales – 46 sales in April 2013, but just 39 this year.

The median price last year was $271,500.

Describe your childhood home

It was a 1920s Canterbury farmhouse made out of timber milled on the farm with a big roof, high gables and we always imagined living in the roof space.

I was the second of five boys – no sisters. My father calls himself a specialist. It was on an interesting part of the Plains that house. It’s the hinge between the Plains and the Southern Alps, a very manipulated landscape which was all about roads and water races, power lines, a landscape determined by people but then the ruggedness of the Southern Alps around us which is the majesty of nature. We were always deferring to nature. I think my architecture reflects a lot of that landscape.

Did you want to be a farmer?

I was always going to be a farmer, but it’s a hard life.

I think we boys were really just labour units at the end of the day, ha! Don’t put that in because Dad will read this. But none of us stayed on the farm.

Mum and Dad always gave us the freedom to explore different things.

One brother’s in the police, one’s a counsellor, my brother is the Arch-Deacon of Dunedin and another’s at Auckland University. We’re all quite diverse.

Yeah, the farm’s gone now. Dad had a heart attack and he had to sell it.

Were you isolated as a family?

Not at all. Mum and Dad were very active in the community.

Some of my fondest early memories are of (Presbyterian) Sunday School and the kids would be inside and the farmers would gather outside around the oak tree just talking for an hour. The mums were

What’s the ugliest part of Auckland?

The 80s was the decade when modernism had failed us and we reverted to classicism but it was pastiche and so shallow. It was stylism for the sake of it.

I don’t think I even knew what it was.

At Methven High School you could take a languages course or a science course and that was it. Because I was going to be a farmer I took science. So I didn’t have any appreciation of art or art history. I liked building stuff and was always drawing plans but they were very mechanical. We went to a careers day in Christchurch and I saw (Sir) Miles Warren’s beautiful watercolours in the town hall and it was warm and lush and beautiful. I can remember the timber in it. Just beautiful. And that was it.

Is beauty important?

I fundamentally believe it is. I think it’s really important that everyone is exposed to good design, not only buildings that are warm and clean and dry but beautiful. It enriches us.

Do you cringe at some of your earlier house designs?

What do you mean modernism had failed us?

We don’t live that absolute minimalist, reduced way. That’s not life. It’s certainly not life where I grew up with five kids in a house.

You can’t have that clean modernism with books and toys lying around on the floor.

I think we’ve got it about right in our houses now.

8. Your winning small house is just 40m square: is that a

statement about the excess in our homes?

It was really a response to the site in a coastal erosion zone and the brief from our clients, but it was also about the discipline of how small could we make it and it still worked for a family of five. I grew up in a 1920s home with an outside toilet and one bathroom for seven people.

Then post-war houses had one garage, then later it was two garages, two bathrooms, then three bathrooms and two living areas and the question is why?

New Zealand houses are twice the size of the average house in the UK because they build tighter and more efficiently.

Your children will have grown up in a house and lifestyle very different to yours: is that a worry?

It’s a real worry. You need to teach them the value of money.

We built a little holiday house – 130sq m – in Coromandel.

My kids were nine or 10 and Ponsonby kids and they were geared to that cafe-type life, so we wanted a place connected to nature. There is no TV, no computers. They thought their

Should the Auckland Council building be torn down?

No. That’s a great building. If you’re talking about sustainability that’s it – we should be retrofitting and reusing. That gives you richness in the city.

We lost so many good buildings in the 80s because we worshipped progress.

We should definitely not be pulling the council building down. A lot of the debates we get in this city are disappointingly low level and that’s one of them.

What else makes you angry?

The public transport issue is a really poorly debated one.

There’s no doubt that any successful city with successful communities has to have a great public transport system.

Build it and people will come, yet nothing for the City Rail Link in this year’s Budget.

Yes, I did drive to work today because I have a meeting out of the city. But I have got a Vespa. – New Zealand Herald

Fire razes historic homestead A lightning strike caused a large fire which razed an historic homestead to the ground near Glenorchy yesterday.

The blaze ripped through the main building of the Paradise Homestead, after the freak lightning strike around 9.50am, fire service southern communications shift manager Tim Reynolds said.

The category one historic building was built in 1883 by New Zealand’s first government architect, William Mason.

It is now an exclusive luxury lodge.

The homestead was significantly damaged in the fire, with only the chimney stacks and some outer structural walls left

standing. No-one was injured in the fire, which took five fire trucks, from Queenstown and Glenorchy, to get under control.

The fire was “well and truly over now”, Mr Reynolds said.

The historic homestead, which sits on 128ha of land on the Glenorchy-Paradise Rd, was an exclusive retreat, which charged guests up to $1200 a night.

The restored building had been modernised to include central heating throughout the property, including its eight original guest bedrooms and three bathrooms.

It is owned and operated by the Paradise Trust.

Holiday pay precedent set

By Derek Cheng An Auckland company has been ordered to pay $256,000 in holiday pay to a former manager, on top of a multi-million dollar payout.

It’s a case that sets a precedent for entitlement to holiday pay on earnings received after the last day on the job.

The Employment Court decision, released yesterday, is being called an important test case that makes it clear employers are obliged to pay holiday for gross earnings, including bonuses or commissions received after the job is over.

The court has ordered agricultural tag company Zeetags, now MSG Investments, to pay Todd Howell $256,000 in holiday pay, plus interest, relating to an incentive payout that he received almost a year after he finished work.

Mr Howell had spent 10 years at Zeetags, and was the finance and administration general manager when he was made redundant in November 2011.

His contract included an agreement relating to the company’s shares that earned him a taxable payout of $3.2 million – but Zeetags excluded holiday pay.

Zeetags’ lawyer Philip Skelton, QC, argued that holiday pay should not apply because the payment was made after Mr Howell’s last working day, and therefore should not be included in his gross earnings.

Mr Skelton said the period for gross earnings should not be open ended, and there was no legal requirement to pay holiday pay after employment ended.

But Judge ME Perkins called the argument “illogical” and “incongruous”.

“It would be illogical, for instance, that an employee is deprived of holiday pay on a commission or bonus payment simply because they cannot be calculated as at the last date of employment, and can only be payable later.

“A black letter law argument ... which results in him being deprived of the holiday pay when in many other situations he would have received it, is simply not tenable.”

Judge Perkins pointed to the Holidays Act definition of gross earnings as what the employer is required by contract to pay the worker, regardless of when.

Mr Howell’s lawyer, Stephen Langton, said it was an important judgement.

“It clarifies an important issue about remuneration payments you get after you leave your employment – anything from a bonus, to a commission, to a deferred remuneration payment. These are contractual payments, not discretionary.

“And they’re going to get 8 per cent holiday pay on top of it, assuming they get four weeks’ annual holiday. They may not have thought they were entitled to that.”

He said he did not know the extent to which holiday pay had been excluded from such payments.

“The million dollar question – no one really knows the answer – is whether people have just assumed that was the case in the past and no one has challenged it, or whether everyone has just been doing it illegally and didn’t notice.”

He said it was the first time the court had considered such a case, probably because “the money you might be entitled to probably didn’t warrant suing someone for”.

‘Kids on bonnet’ mum sentenced A young mother who crashed her car into a park bench, catapulting her two children from the bonnet, did not “engage her brain”, according to the community magistrate who sentenced her.

Renee Karen Jackson, 28, appeared for sentencing yesterday in Tauranga District Court. She pleaded guilty to a charge of reckless driving and was fined $500, ordered to pay $130 in court costs, disqualified from driving for six months, and sentenced to nine months supervision.

Jackson allowed her children, aged 5 and 8, to climb onto her

car bonnet before driving them around Tauranga’s Kulim Park on May 10.

She crashed into a park bench, throwing the children from the bonnet and seriously damaging the car.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Steve Frost estimated the car would have been travelling at 30km/h before colliding with the bench based on the damage to the car and evidence from witnesses.

The children were thrown 3m to 4m from the front of the car, he said.

“The risk of serious injury to others in the park was a real

risk.” Mr Frost said the car crashed square into the bench demonstrating Jackson’s view was completely blocked by the two children.

“She was driving blind,” he said.

Jackson’s lawyer Jason Owers claimed his client was in first gear the whole time and was not going more than 10km/h. The children were not thrown from the bonnet but rather slid off, he said.

Mr Owers said his client had “absolute regret and remorse” for her actions.

“She accepts entirely the foolishness of her actions,” he said.

CMP Canterbury has a new name and a new look.

A new plinth erected outside the company’s Seafield Road site yesterday signalled the start of a new era for the longtime Mid Canterbury meat processing plant.

It will now be known as ANZCO Foods – the name of its parent company.

This month all ANZCO’s CMP and Riverlands processing sites will be taking on the new name and at the same time ANZCO Foods – which is celebrating its 30th birthday - will be updating its look and logo.

“It’s grown to be New Zealand’s fifth largest exporter by expanding and taking over other businesses. Now we’re bringing those businesses in, under

the ANZCO brand,” ANZCO managing director Mark Clarkson said.

“The change to ANZCO consolidates our business brands and also simplifies our profile and recognises our industry scale.”

The Seafield site processing plant was acquired by ANZCO in 1994 when it became known as Canterbury Meat Packers and then later as CMP Canterbury.

In 1995 it expanded into beef including processing cattle from ANZCO’s Five Star Beef feedlot. The site operates throughout the year and at peak periods employs more than 900 people in a range of processing activities including slaughter, boning, storing of meat products, pelt processing and rendering.

ANZCO was established as a marketing company in 1984 as

part of the Meat Board investment in Japan. The initial focus was on sheep meats but with the liberations of the Japanese market in the late 1980s, beef became an important part of the business.

It then expanded into procurement and processing lamb and beef, and more recently into food and other solutions by adding value to parts of the carcass that had previously not been maximised.

“We’re proud of what we’ve achieved in the last 30 years and the new modern logo has a strong New Zealand look and feel and positions us well as we look to the future,” Mr Clarkson said.

ANZCO Foods is one of New Zealand’s largest exporters with an annual turnover of $1.3b and nearly 3000 employees globally.

Turning passion for travel into a job

P

enny Shearer’s life fits in suitcases.

For the past few years she’s been a traveller. She’s lived around the world and shown off parts of the world to tourists as a tour guide.

But the time has come to settle down.

For now she’s home on the Mid Canterbury farm where she grew up, but for her settling down is a whole new, big adventure.

Along with two others, Penny is turning her passion for travelling into a business. They’ve started up Tuthie Afrika – a company offering tailor-made tours of Africa.

It’s a concept she and America friend Melinda Eades dreamed up while on their own African adventure last year.

They travelled the continent for more than six months and while they loved it, they decided they could do better.

Bed-bound for a couple of days with a nasty bout of giardia, Penny and Melinda came up with a plan, and a driver from their African tour played a vital role in it.

That driver was Arthur Chege, who lives in a small village about two-and-a-half hours outside of Nairobi, the capital of his native Kenya.

They pitched their idea to him and the three joined forces – Arthur as the driver and tour guide, Penny in charge of reservations and marketing, and Melinda looking after the finances.

Just a few short months later Tuthie Afrika was born and next month they’ll take their first tour group away. They got some “guinea pigs” on board – including Penny’s parents, aunty and some family friends – and planned out an itinerary.

Tuthie Afrika caters for small groups. They’ve got themselves a jeep which can carry seven passengers and they’ll take those passengers wherever they want to go.

Penny said her time in Africa had shown her there was a gap in the market. Existing tour companies either focused on budget or high end, involving camping or nice hotels; there was no in-between. Existing companies also focused on a certain age bracket.

Penny, Melinda and Arthur want to change that. They plan to give their clients the exact African experience they want.

“It’ll be almost like having your own car, but you’ve got a driver,” she said.

The name Tuthie Afrika is derived from the Kikuyu language, a tribe originating in the Central Highlands of Kenya. Translated into English, Tuthie Afrika means ‘Let’s go Africa’ and the trio are hoping groups – whether it be friends

or families – will do just that.

“People tend to think that kids can’t go there, but they really can. They’ve just got to be old enough to know they’ve got to be quiet when you’re looking at the lions, that kind of thing.”

Penny knows what makes a good tour; she’s done her fair share, seeing more than 60 countries along the way.

After moving to the UK in 2006 and spending four years there, Penny headed for Central America. She made herself a

home in Guatemala and worked as a tour guide for Intrepid, taking tours from Mexico to Panama.

She fell in love with Central America; so much so she’s about to move back there.

“I like the third world, the first world bores me – it’s just too clean,” Penny said.

Travelling the world has opened her eyes. She’s seen poverty that many couldn’t imagine and it’s changed her thinking.

She knows she’s lucky to have

grown up in New Zealand, in a country where too many people don’t think twice about doing half loads of washing, leaving lights on at night, or spending $60,000 on a new car.

“I just feel very lucky to have been born here and have my passport and be able to come back here for a while and earn some money,” she said.

“People here have no idea how lucky they are and sometimes it takes a trip like this to see what it’s actually like out there.”

Soon Penny will call Nicaragua home. From there she’ll organise the reservations and marketing side of Tuthie Afrika – after all, all she really needs is a laptop and a phone. And she’s got in some good practise using both during the set-up of the company, with the three main players currently living on three different continents – Penny in New Zealand, Arthur in Kenya and Melinda in America.

“The time difference gives me about two hours a day to properly communicate with them,” Penny said.

But they’ve achieved a lot in a short space of time.

They’re registered, insured and legal and their website is up and running. Now all they need is for the bookings to start rolling in; reservations they hope will come from around the world.

“The ultimate goal is that this will become a fulltime reservations job,” Penny said.

For a start they want to focus their attention on Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Ethiopia.

“We went to 18 different countries while we were there and saw them pretty well, so any of those 18 countries we could easily put together an itinerary for. That’s in the fiveyear plan,” Penny said.

Penny said Africa was an amazing place and Kenya was a beautiful country.

It was westernised, but there was still a lot of poverty and the way to help the people was to get them jobs.

The team at Tuthie Afrika hope that as their company grows they’ll be able to provide just that.

Teens fight back against bullying

W

hen bullying became one of the main reasons for Manaia Wereta to leave Mount Hutt College, she never thought she would return to face the same ridicule.

Being a teenage Maori in small-town Mid Canterbury, the teenager was labelled poor and stereotyped by fellow classmates. It took its toll mentally and emotionally.

She decided a stint at East Otago High School might help solve the problem late in 2012, but family reasons meant she had return to Methven last year.

“Nobody really knew why I moved away, so when I came back at the start of October there were rumours going around that I was raped by someone, to me that was the most disgusting thing I have ever heard and it really got to me emotionally, it was heartbreaking,” she said.

Of course it wasn’t true but it was tough to deal with and her first instinct was to shut everyone out.

It was the help of Methven youth mentor Juanita Richards which pulled her through the ordeal.

Today Manaia is a tower of strength and admits she doesn’t take the smaller things to heart as much. She wants to be an inspiration for the many others

Bullying is a massive issue facing Mid Canterbury youth and is becoming more accessible via social media. With more than 1700 local secondary pupils unifying against bullying this week as part of Pink Shirt Day, reporter Myles Hume looks at how we are standing up to the bullies. she now realises are caught in a similar predicament.

Unfortunately tales like Manaia’s are all too common in Mid Canterbury, but the fact she can talk about it shows progress is being made and awareness is spreading.

She felt there was no better time than this week to lay bare her battle, as more than 1700 Mid Canterbury youth participated in Pink Shirt Day, in a bid to prevent others falling victim to the same fate as Manaia.

Both Mount Hutt and Ashburton colleges took part in the anti-bullying awareness day that began in Nova Scotia, Canada, in 2007 when a group of students decided to defend a teenager who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. In a show of solidarity, many of his peers turned up to school the next day wearing pink shirts.

It is all about raising awareness and Mid Canterbury’s Think First project has been the driving force behind that this week, handing out 1700 pink shirt pins to wear on school uniforms to remind pupils to stand up together against bullying and not be afraid to

point out it’s not okay.

The project has almost clocked up its first year and was in response to a local scoping document that found cyberbullying, a culture of brawling among young woman and bullying within junior years at secondary school as major issues in Mid Canterbury.

Think First project co-ordinator John Hobbs says cyberbullying, peer pressure and discrimination are still key issues that he is fighting in a battle that won’t be won overnight.

It is consistent with stories brought to light in recent weeks, including a local teenager who was convicted and discharged on six counts of burglary, which a district court judge linked to “sustained and unprovoked cruelty”.

A report into young Mid Canterbury migrants found “the majority of youth from another country or Maori from another town said they experienced bullying and racism”.

Almost a year into the role, John has already made major inroads into addressing the district’s bullying woes “through awareness and education, pre-

vention and community action”.

Funded by the Te Punanga Haumaru, a body the Government established to fund community action against bullying, John has introduced a series of initiatives including an interactive workshop delivered to 650 local youth, developed a website, produced locally-made videos on bullying scenario situations and yesterday’s Pink Shirt Day. A youth executive board is the driving force behind the different projects, because after all it is their peers who are affected.

“It does take a while to build an identity in the community for a new initiative. Word of mouth is still the best way to gauge if what you are doing is having an impact,” John says.

“We’ve had inquiries from all over the country about Think First and the work we’re doing, and feedback from other local organisations and community groups has been really positive.”

Perhaps one of the most interesting programmes the project has introduced is a youth advocates scheme at Mount Hutt College.

Twenty-two pupils take on a youth advocacy role and fellow teens can approach to ask for advice on where to go for help.

Manaia says she is already seeing a huge crackdown on bullying as a result of the programme only a few months into it, while the college itself has experienced a 50 per cent influx in reported cases of bullying.

While it appears major inroads have already been carved out with the Think First project, what John has in the pipeline will add weight behind the battle to stop the bullies.

A Think First Facebook application, a parents as rolemodels campaign and a new youth event for the district are the big ticket ideas that will be complemented by smaller projects throughout the year.

“One thing we feel will help address all of the key issues above is our parents as rolemodels campaign.

“Bullying is a learned behaviour and a lot of it is learned from parents and other adults.

It’s so important for adults to realise that children see and hear their behaviour and that it influences them.”

Dr Baker stood up for what he believed in

r Ron Baker cared about his community and throughout his life in Ashburton battled for commonsense and decency.

The man who helped establish Ashburton College and who went head to head with the Government to save Ashburton Hospital, died this month, aged 90.

Born in Greymouth, he later lived in Christchurch and began his working life as a pharmacy apprentice. However, with flying experience under his belt and World War Two service calling, he donned the uniform of the RNZAF and was posted for active service in Europe as a Lancaster navigator for bomber command.

It wasn’t until he returned that he eventually began medical training in Dunedin.

As a newly-trained doctor, Ron and wife, Waveney, arrived in Ashburton in January 1954.

Dr Baker was initially the assistant to Dr Todd in general practice in Allenton. The two-roomed surgery had no receptionist, no nurse and there were paddocks and cattle directly across the road. GPs did many house calls then and Dr Baker did a lot of mileage in his Humber 80.

“There was a map kept next to his bag that had sort of revered status in our house and couldn’t be touched because he relied on that to find people,” son Stephen said.

Three years after his arrival in town he set up in independent medical practice, building up a busy obstetrics practice and attending more than 3000 deliveries.

On top of his GP work, Dr Baker also did anaesthetics. He was permanently on-call for anaesthetics and his own patients, along with his GP consultations in the day and evenings.

Dr Ron Baker did not seek the limelight but stood up for what he believed in, helping to shape many aspects of Ashburton today. He is remembered fondly by many.

called Dr Baker their family doctor, but his influence on the district was far greater than his medical practice.

His sense of family and duty to the community compelled him to take the lead in the amalgamation of Ashburton’s two secondary schools, Hakatere College and Ashburton High School. With four children heading into their secondary education phase he sorted out heated issues going on between the two schools.

He later helped secure the current Walnut Avenue site for the new college, lobbying and gaining the support of then Prime Minister Keith Holyoake. All four of Dr Baker’s children went to Ashburton College and he sat on the school board for 12 years.

Boards Association, Council of the University of Canterbury and was on the committee on secondary education. His son Bill said he enjoyed the bigger opportunities it gave him to help shape education policy nationwide.

Dr Baker also loved sport and was involved with several codes.

In his early life he played rugby, but once he took up medicine became an avid watcher.

He was also a Canterbury cricket representative and loved tennis.

In Ashburton he helped to form the Ashburton Squash Club and was a life member, and he helped to move the netball courts from the Ashburton Domain to Ashburton College and was a patron to Ashburton Netball. At one time he was also the boxing club doctor.

An enthusiastic golfer, he was a life member at Ashburton’s Brandon Golf Course.

Woodcarving was a passion of his and he was able to take a piece of wood and create memorable pieces. He not only designed the Ashburton College Phoenix crest, but he carved a large wooden version of it and gifted it to the school. There is also a lectern carved by him with the crest on it, used for assemblies and award presentations.

When he retired from medicine at 66, Dr Baker rekindled his political work. When the Government indicated the closure of services at Ashburton Hospital, Dr Baker, along with Dr John MacDonald, spearheaded a David and Goliath type fight with the government, which was hell-bent on winding

the hospital down.

The fight pitted the men against then-Rakaia MP Jenny Shipley who held the health portfolio.

Dr Baker was part of Age Concern when the hospital supporters had an early win in 1993, but when it flared up again in 1996 he was with Grey Power. He went on to the Grey Power Federation Board and later become their national health spokesman. He was made a life member when he retired from them in 1999.

Post retirement, he wrote a family memoir entitled While You’re Here, Doc and, to his great pride, he was one of the first recipients of a New Zealand Order of Merit in 1996.

Coup troops on Facebook Thailand’s junta has commandeered every TV channel for round-the-clock broadcasts of dour announcements and patriotic hymns. The public’s verdict: DJ, please change the soundtrack.

In this day and age, it’s not surprising that the generals who launched Thailand’s coup have set up a Facebook page.

But it is a sign of the times that the junta’s vintage martial tunes are not resonating with the Facebook generation.

“Since you’re reforming politics, you might as well reform your music,” said one of many postings on the page, which had over 210,000 likes by yesterday afternoon, up exponentially from earlier in the day.

Song requests poured in — for Justin Timberlake, Michael Jackson, the Disney hit “Let It Go,” and for foot-tapping Thai folk music.

“Please give us something more uplifting,” said another comment on the page, which bears the junta’s self-declared name: National Peace and Order Maintaining Council.

The running commentary offered a lighthearted and lively sideshow to the otherwise dramatic events unfolding in Thailand, where the military declared martial law on Tuesday and then announced two days later it was overthrowing the government.

The country’s powerful army chief, Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha, justified the coup as a means of restoring stability and avoiding more violence in a crisis that has left 28 dead and hundreds

Customers at a McDonald’s restaurant were caught by surprise when Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott turned up for a coffee. Mr Abbott spent much of the day in western Sydney spruiking his first federal budget, which has received a cool reception. But the PM was warmly greeted by up to 30 customers at the McDonald’s in Leumeah. “Some people said, ‘Look, some tough decisions had to be made and good on you for taking them’,” Mr Abbott told 2GB radio yesterday.

“Others said, ‘Really nice to have you here’, and others just squealed with excitement and wanted a photo. “No one chose to bite my head off.”

Not all the postings were about music.

While schools were ordered closed Friday, parents posted pleas for the return of children’s channels: “Can I have my TV back? At least the cartoon

channel for my kid? It won’t hurt national stability,” said one father.

One woman posted a picture of a smiling shirtless soldier and asked: “Do you know if he has a girlfriend? I like him.”

The coup Thursday was the 12th since the end of absolute monarchy in 1932.

One comment on the Facebook page suggested that when this coup is over, it would be nice to have a musical souvenir: “When it all comes to an end, don’t forget to make a CD.” - AP

Career criminal jailed for armed robbery Christopher Dean “Badness” Binse was 24 when a Victorian judge told him to stop robbing banks and stay out of jail.

But 21 years later, the career criminal is back behind bars after stealing $235,000 from a Melbourne hotel and shooting at police in a 44-hour siege.

His most recent convictions are the latest chapter in a criminal history that has led to Binse spending more than half his 45 years in jail.

Victorian Supreme Court Justice Terry Forrest said that Binse’s prospects for rehabilitation were poor.

“Your prior record and the gravity of your current offending necessarily leads me to conclude that the community needs to be protected from you,” he said.

He sentenced the Keilor East man to 18 years and two months in jail, with a non-parole period of 14 years and two months.

Justice Forrest said Binse’s armed robbery and police siege had put lives in danger.

“When such crimes are committed, they cause terror to those immediately involved and apprehension in the wider community,” Justice Forrest said.

The 45-year-old pleaded guilty to charges including armed robbery and possessing guns. He had also been charged with making a threat to kill police who confronted him in the restaurant, but was acquitted in a February trial.

When police searched his storage unit after he was arrested in May 2012, they found an arsenal of weapons.

Winter may be on the horizon but the sun continues to shine on Australia’s southeast. For the 13th consecutive May day Melbourne enjoyed temperatures above 20 degrees yesterday, further extending the original 10-day record set in 1972. Adelaide was also warm with temperatures reaching 21 by early afternoon, and it remains on track to beat its own record. The City of Churches needs another two days above 20 to equal the record set in 2002, with temperatures set to reach 22 today, 23 on Sunday and 20 on Monday. Sydney continues to write its own records, spending its 14th day in a row above 22 on Friday, smashing the nine-day record set in 1978 and again in 2007.

Avalanche claims 3 Nepalese officials say an avalanche has swept three climbers and they are now presumed dead on the slopes of Mount Kanchenjunga, the world’s third tallest peak.

Police official Meghraj Kadel says rescuers found no trace of an Indian climber and her two Nepalese Sherpa guides after they were hit by the avalanche at 7300 metres. In April, an avalanche hit a trail on Mount Everest, killing 16 Sherpa guides in the mountain’s worst disaster that led to the cancellation of the climbing season because many Sherpa guides refused work.

McCartney recovers Paul McCartney is on the mend after being treated for a virus that led him to cancel his tour in Japan.

McCartney received treatment at a hospital in Tokyo, publicist Perri Cohen said in a statement.

The former Beatle is expected to make a complete recovery and will be taking time to rest. McCartney cancelled his entire “Out There Japan Tour 2014” this week because of his illness.

McCartney was also scheduled to perform at a Seoul stadium on May 28. It would have been his first concert in South Korea. McCartney, who turns 72 next month, “has been extremely moved by all the messages and well wishes he has received from fans all over the world,” the statement said.

Vincent faces 14 charges of match-fixing Former New Zealand international Lou Vincent has been charged with match-fixing by the England & Wales Cricket Board.

Vincent and former Sussex team-mate Naved Arif have been charged with fixing the outcome of two county cricket matches.

Vincent and Arif, a Pakistani living in England, are being charged with 20 counts of match-fixing.

The matches in question are a 40-over game between Sussex and Kent played at Hove on 23 August 2011 and the Twenty20 match between Sussex and Lancashire earlier that month.

Vincent has already given evidence to the International Cricket Council of fixing in five countries.

The ECB said in a statement: “The England and Wales Cricket Board has issued charges against former New Zealand cricketer, Lou Vincent, and former Sussex cricketer, Naveed Arif, under the ECB’s anti-corruption code.

“Vincent is charged with a total of 14 offences in relation to two county matches played under the ECB’s jurisdiction in August 2011 - a Twenty20 match between Sussex and Lancashire and a 40-over game between Sussex and Kent.

“Naveed Arif is charged with six offences in relation to the 40-

over game between Sussex and Kent in August 2011.

“Both players have been provisionally suspended from all cricketing activities organised, authorised or supported by the ECB, International Cricket Council, any other national cricket federation and any member of any other national cricket federation.”

Meanwhile, a recording of Vincent and Chris Cairns’ friend and former lawyer Andrew Fitch-Holland discussing match-fixing is looming as a crucial piece of evidence for the London Metropolitan Police.

The exact details of the recording, taken before Cairns’ successful 2012 defamation case against former Indian Premier League impresario Lalit Modi, are unknown.

During the conversation, Fitch-Holland sought a character reference for Cairns, his client, ahead of the libel lawsuit in the High Court at London.

The recording also seems to have Fitch-Holland agreeing to Vincent’s assertion that a particular game in the Indian Cricket League (ICL) was fixed.

Vincent, Cairns and Daryl Tuffey, the former New Zealand internationals facing claims about involvement in fixing, all played in the ICL, for the Chandigarh Lions.

Scandal won’t affect World Cup John Key says match-fixing allegations against former Kiwi cricketers are a potential tragedy for those players but will not tarnish New Zealand sport’s “good, honest” reputation.

He has moved to reassure the public that the scandal will not cast a shadow over the country’s hosting of the Cricket World Cup next year.

“I don’t believe in the end it will have a dramatic impact,” he said. “I think if these allegations are proven to be correct, they’ll reflect very badly on the individ-

uals, and there’ll be some serious consequences.

“But I’d be very surprised if it stopped anyone coming to the Cricket World Cup.” Mr Key distanced the World Cup on home soil from the International Cricket Council (ICC) investigation in London, noting that the inquiry was focusing on events that took place in India.

He pointed to New Zealand’s reputation for transparency and low levels of corruption both in sport and as a country. He ech-

oed cricketing legend Martin Crowe’s hope that the ICC investigation would be completed before the event began, but added it was unlikely.

Fast fish

Matthew Harford had an unexpected finish to the swimming season that has resulted in a big expectation for the future.

His haul of nine medals at the New Zealand Age Group Championships in Wellington, four gold, four silver and a bronze, brought the curtain down on a successful season for the swimmer who went expecting far less.

“I only really thought I would win one medal at the most,”

Harford said. “I have no idea what the secret was. It was just a good performance I guess.”

He had claimed the Jennian Homes Ashburton Swim team’s lone medal in 2013, a bronze medal, and in the space of a year he improved to hold four national titles.

Harford had Carl Gordon as a coach last season and he learned plenty from him. And he has thrived under new coach Shane Jones in his first season in charge.

“I wasn’t really developed as a swimmer when Carl left and Shane just picked up where he left off.”

The end of the season meant he had a break from swimming, which was all of one week off before he was back in the pool preparing for the new season.

“I just did nothing really. Anything but swimming really.”

The new season brings new challenges.

“I’ll be up an age group now so that will up the competition and

things will be a lot harder.”

Harford turns 14 in July and first big stop for the season is the National Short Course Championships in Harford’s happy hunting ground of Wellington.

He is already straight back into putting in the hard work, with at least two hours of swim training, both on dry land and in the pool, six days a week and a day off on Sundays.

Out of the pool he gave up football for hockey, only to make things a bit easier for his par-

ents, Dave and Maria, to get him and his brothers and sister about on a Saturday. Harford acknowledged that if it wasn’t for them he wouldn’t be where he was or achieved what he has.

He only took up swimming for “survival” with his mother wanting him and his three siblings to learn to swim. Harford was like a fish in water.

“I just loved being in the water. As long as my passion for swimming is there I’ll keep competing.”

Blues show much-needed grit, despite loss

By Patrick McKendry The Blues’ hopes of making the playoffs were on a knife edge before last night’s 29-24 defeat to the Sharks. Now they have been filleted and sliced and diced for good measure by the men from Durban who look increasingly like championship material.

And yet, while they will need several miracles to feature in the finals, it’s not all bad news for John Kirwan’s outfit, who saw their winning run at home this season come to an end, albeit at North Harbour Stadium, in front of a crowd of 14,500, at least half of whom sounded like they were cheering for the visitors.

The Blues were beaten, yes, and for the 10th consecutive time by the Sharks, but they were up against a table-leading team which punishes mistakes like an old-fashioned gin trap to a rabbit - accurate, cruel and, ultimately, deadly.

The Sharks have flaws, though, and chief among them is the determination to push the referee to the limit with their unwillingness to respect the offside line or release the tackled player.

After the red card to Jean Deysel and yellow to Willem Alberts against the Crusaders last weekend in Christchurch, last night both Jannie du Plessis and Francois Steyn spent time in the bin.

Their reputation could precede them yet.

There was inaccuracy from the home side, but there was also fight.

Jerome Kaino’s tackle on openside flanker Lubabalo Mtembu was one for the ages. The poor Mtembu is unlikely to remember it.

Elsewhere, Kaino was simply immense. He appears back to his World Cup form of 2011; perhaps the time spent recently in the All Blacks’ training squad was the final spark he needed to get there after his time in Japan.

Keven Mealamu, Luke Braid, Charlie Faumuina and Peter Saili followed Kaino’s example, if not quite in deeds, then in in-

tent. It was a world away from the lacklustre defeats to the Hurricanes or Chiefs.

There was real hope among the Blues that Braid’s try just after halftime could have been a game changer, the home side taking advantage of Jannie du Plessis’ yellow card to force a scrum - perhaps determined to do what the Crusaders couldn’t last weekend - and the skipper going under the posts after a Kaino charge.

Hickey’s conversion put the Blues in striking distance at 1613, but another Francois Steyn penalty and some bad luck when halfback Cobus Reinach took advantage of a hack through ultimately put paid to that.

Back came the Blues, though, Ma’a Nonu providing the final pass for Tevita Li to score in the left corner, Ihaia West expertly converting from the sideline.

A West penalty cancelled out SP Marais’ three-pointer which punished Sam Prattley’s rush of blood in front of his own posts.

A measure of the Sharks’ camp’s anxiety in the final minutes was their yelling at their team to kick the ball into the stand, ever aware of the Blues’ threat on the counter. There wasn’t enough of that - Kirwan is missing injured fullback Charles Piutau - but the guts and determination among the forwards almost made up for it.

Almost.

Perry’s big push

etting the nod to start against the Highlanders tonight, Crusaders prop Tim Perry can make a push to play international rugby.

With the June international window, the son of former All Black Grant Perry won’t be following in his father’s footsteps in the black jersey yet, but he has the chance to play international rugby when the Crusaders take on England on June 17.

Perry missed out on an international fixture at the Blues last year when he was ruled out with injury for the mid-week game against France, so the former Mid Canterbury representative is keen to stake his claim.

That starts tonight against the Highlanders where he will go up against another former Mid Canterbury prop product in Chris King.

“They didn’t really say too much about it. Just that I would have a good opportunity this week and I’ll be looking to make the most of it,” Perry said.

He started the first two games of the season against the Chiefs and the Blues but has been resigned to coming off the bench until tonight.

Last week Perry sat out the agonising loss to the Sharks, left unused on the bench as Blackadder stuck with Wyatt Crockett for the full 80 minutes - going away from the usual front row swap in the second half.

“It was really frustrating sitting there watching it, wanting to get

out there make some impact and a bit of a difference, but didn’t get the chance.”

Crockett and nine fellow Crusaders spent part of the week at the All Black training camp, with the All Black coaches hoping all the players at the camp would return to their franchises revitalised by the change of scenery.

However, Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder put last week’s front row of Crockett, Owen Franks and former Corey Flynn on the bench in favour of Perry, Ben Funnell and Nepo Laulala against the Highlanders.

It is a crunch game for both sides with the New Zealand conference top four separated by just four points and only four rounds reaming before the playoffs.

“Last week was a frustrating loss but we need to move on and get the win this week, which is the only focus.”

The Crusaders are at home to the Force next week before the three-week break, where Perry could play right through with another potential run-around for Rakaia and the probable date with the English.

“I’m not too sure if we will be released back to the clubs or not but a chance to play against the English would be an awesome opportunity.

“I’m not a sure thing but I hope to get a big chunk of game time against England.”

With Crockett and Franks set to be busy with the All Blacks, Perry has strong chance to play big minutes against England and can go a long way to making that happen under the roof in Dunedin tonight.

Teams sweat quarterfinals spots

The Combined Country Cup is a week away from deciding which eight sides will feature in the quarterfinals.

Rakaia and Methven are both unbeaten and on track to push for home field advantage, Celtic are relying on other results to lean their way, while Southern and Hampstead are out of the equation.

After their win over Southbridge last week, Rakaia have a prime opportunity to push for top spot in section one if they

can overcome Ashley today and then the struggling Oxford in the final round, with their two main rivals for top spot battling it out, with top-of-the-table Methven heading north to tackle Southbridge.

Methven’s defence has been impregnable in the last five games, not conceding a try since the opening round draw with Rakaia, but they expect a far bigger challenge from defending champions Southbridge than they have had from other teams in recent weeks.

advantage through the finals, facing Prebbleton in the final round, but a loss today could see them wind up third and an away trip in the quarterfinals.

Ashley and Darfield are in the hunt for fourth place in the group while Hampstead are still after a first win when they host Kaiapoi today.

Over in section two, Celtic are clinging to fourth spot but are set to slip down with a bye today.

Celtic are on 17 points while their two nearest rivals Glenmark (16 points) and West Melton (15) square off with the

winner set to take fourth spot.

Celtic will take on Saracens next week, potentially needing a bonus point win to have a shot at the quarterfinals.

Waihora are guaranteed a quarterfinal berth and a win over third placed Burnham-Dunsandel (19) will lock in home field advantage before their bye next week, and would help Celtic out ahead of the final round.

In brief Horwill fronts up Queensland skipper James Horwill will face a SANZAR judicial hearing after claiming the Reds were “robbed” following their Super Rugby loss to Melbourne. SANZAR announced yesterday it had completed the initial investigation into Horwill’s interview after last weekend’s 30-27 defeat.

The matter was referred for a teleconference hearing on Tuesday.

“In the end, once again we were robbed by a stupid refereeing decision,” Horwill said in the interview. The former Australian skipper was fuming after the video referee belatedly reversed a decision and penalised Reds back-rower Ed O’Donoghue for eye-gouging Rebels captain Scott Higginbotham in the 79th minute.

O’Donoghue was later cleared of eye-gouging.

Force flush A day after watching five of his players earn Wallabies selection, Western Force coach Michael Foley feels there are another four waiting in the wings ready to grab their chance. Force skipper Matt Hodgson, Ben McCalman, Nick Cummins, Nathan Charles and Pek Cowan all earned selection in the Wallabies’ 32-man squad for next month’s three-Test series against France. Foley was pleased as punch to see a healthy Force representation in the Wallabies’ squad. And he believes flanker Angus Cottrell, in-form centre Kyle Godwin and locks Sam Wykes and Adam Coleman will also don Wallaby gold in the not-too-distant future. Fekitoa has goods, but needs minding

By Patrick McKendry It appears that a replacement for Conrad Smith has been found.

Yes, Malakai Fekitoa really is rated that highly by the All Blacks selectors. If, heaven forbid, centre Smith is injured tonight while playing for the Hurricanes against the Chiefs, Steve Hansen and Co would have no fear about putting Fekitoa into the starting line-up against England for the first test at Eden Park on June 7.

The 22-year-old Highlander has played so well in his inaugural season at this level that he has convinced the national selectors of his ability and potential.

The senior players among the All Blacks are said to be fans too. While Fekitoa was wide-eyed and more than a little in-

timidated by the thought of rooming with Conrad Smith at the Christchurch training camp recently, a night after putting Smith and the Hurricanes in their place in Wellington during the Highlanders’ 18-16 victory, the experienced players within the national team have been impressed by not only Fekitoa’s willingness to learn, but also his ability to put those lessons to good use straight away. They are abilities not always present in up-and-coming players.

And yet, one name above all others must make the All Blacks’ brains trust wary of pushing Fekitoa too hard, too soon: Isaia Toeava.

Toeava was selected for the All Blacks in 2005 as a 19-year-old after a handful of games for Auckland in the national provincial championship. He played in 36 tests -

his last coming against Argentina in the 2011 World Cup - but never lived up to his billing as one of the most talented backs of his generation.

In hindsight it has been admitted that Toeava, who left the Blues in 2012 for club rugby in Japan with an uncertain future due to a degenerative hip problem, was pushed too hard too soon.

But his biggest problem was the inability to handle the pressure on the biggest stage.

As Hansen is fond of saying, test rugby isn’t for everyone. Tongan-born Fekitoa has a similar background to Toeava, who was born in Samoa. He also appears relatively shy.

Blood remains thicker than water for the Fainga’a twins who remain desperate to stay together as the plummeting Queensland Reds assess their Super Rugby roster.

But it could be in Melbourne, rather than Brisbane, where they suit up next season. While hooker Saia and centre Anthony have been crowd favourites at Suncorp Stadium since 2010, their futures are clouded following the Reds’ astonishing fall from grace in 2014.

Saia confirmed he had offers in Europe but was more interested in keeping his World Cup hopes alive by moving to the Rebels if the Reds didn’t want to re-sign he and Anthony. The 27-year-olds have always come as a package deal since debuting with the Brumbies in 2006 before shifting to the Reds for the 2009 season.

Force re-sign Kiwi The Western Force have re-signed former All Blacks scrumhalf Alby Mathewson for the next two Super Rugby seasons. Mathewson arrived at the Force as their international marquee last season and under normal circumstances he would have only been allowed to stay for a maximum of two years so as to not stifle the development of local players. But the Force received special dispensation from the Australian Rugby Union to extend the 28-year-old’s stay beyond the initial two-year deal. The four-Test All Black, said he and his partner were keen to stay in Perth. “We love it here.”

Rifle range turns 50

Dixon all business ahead of Indy While his motorsport team struggles with setup and speed, Scott Dixon has flown under the radar during preparations for the Indianapolis 500.

It’s exactly how he wants it.

It’s how he has tried to be his entire career.

“I like to live simply,” Dixon said.

As such, one of the most decorated IndyCar drivers of the last decade goes grossly underappreciated for his accomplishments.

Dixon’s 33 career victories rank seventh all-time, and three more wins would leapfrog him past Al Unser Jr and Bobby Unser into fourth place.

The only drivers who rank higher than Dixon in victories right now have the last name Andretti, Foyt and Unser.

Since joining Chip Ganassi

Racing in 2002 while the team still raced in the now-defunct CHAMP Car Series, Dixon has won at least one race in every season except two. He has an Indianapolis 500 win on his resume, and his three IndyCar championships — spread out in 2003, 2008 and 2013 — show a consistency and longevity that’s hard to match.

At just 33 years old, the New Zealander conceivably has almost another decade of racing ahead of him.

But he’s worked in the shadow of some huge personalities and some of American openwheel racing’s biggest stars.

When Dario Franchitti joined the Ganassi organization in 2009, Dixon watched his famous teammate reel off three consecutive championships and two Indy 500 wins. In that

same span, Dixon finished second in the championship once, third three times, and finished second to Franchitti in the 2012 Indy 500.

Living in Franchitti’s shadow never bothered him.

“I preferred that, actually,” said Dixon, who will start Sunday’s Indy 500 in 11th, in the fourth row. “When I come out of the truck and everyone is standing around waiting, they all chased after Dario, and I could just get on the scooter and ride off and get to work.

I’ve never had any problem not having the spotlight on me.”

Franchitti is on the sidelines now, forced into retirement last November from injuries suffered in a crash at Houston a month earlier. The imposing 1-2 attack of the two red Target cars has been broken up.

It means Dixon finally has the team to himself, but he doesn’t view it that way — he maintains it’s always been owner Chip Ganassi’s team — and the laid-back Kiwi isn’t seeking any fame.

It’s a shame, because he’s earned the attention.

Dixon excels at striving for more and putting in the work toward continuing to improve his race craft.

“He doesn’t stop learning.

He doesn’t allow what he’s just done to be the high point in his life, in his career. He only uses that as a springboard for the next day,” said Mike Hull, Ganassi’s managing director and the strategist atop Dixon’s pit stand. “I wish we could clone him, because he’s the kind of person you need driving your race cars.”

Bennett in umpiring frame for Rio Olympics A former Mid Canterbury woman has the next Olympics in her sights, as a hockey umpire.

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has announced that Karen Bennett is now a grade one international umpire, news which followed her recent successful umpiring at the Hawke’s Bay Festival in Hastings in April.

Bennett is part of the FIH Road to Rio Programme, which focuses on developing a group of umpires ahead of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Bennett has worked her way along the umpire pathway and will soon umpire at the FIH

World Cup in Holland.

She has been an umpire manager at a range of national and international tournaments, including five Ford National Hockey Leagues, the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Olympic Qualifying tournaments, Oceania Cup and the Junior Asia Cup. Being an FIH Grade One umpire means she is now in the third stage of a five-stage process – the World Development Panel and the World Panel are the final two stages. The FIH can appoint Grade One umpires to any of their major international events – not just those events that New Zealand is competing in.

The Coronation Smallbore Rifle Club range will mark its 50th Anniversary on June 15. The distinctive mint green building on State Highway 1 has been the home of smallbore shooting for 50 years, however, countless Ashburtonians will have passed the West Street facility unaware of what goes on inside. The site has seen tensely fought competitions, multiple national and international shooters, countless volunteers and athletes and thousands of schoolchildren pass through its doors. The anniversary celebrations will commence in the afternoon with a fun novelty shoot, which will showcase the history of the club and of shooting equipment and styles with an afternoon tea once shooting has been completed before a dinner and formalities at the Hotel Ashburton. The Coronation Club are eager to register all people who have had an association with the club and others who would like to attend the celebrations, with interested parties to contact club president Dean Smith.

Wrestlers gearing up New Zealand are sending a team of six wrestlers to the Commonwealth Games this year, and chasing the first medal in the sport for 28 years.

Tayla Ford, former Canterbury sevens player and national judo representative, is the sole woman in the group, and will contest the 58kg class. She won a bronze in the Commonwealth Championships in South Africa last year and is confident. “I know I can up my game,” she said yesterday. “I have increased the number of wrestling trainings I do and I’ve started weightlifting. The men’s quintet is headed by the versatile Sam Belkin, with Canadian-based Aucklander Craig Miller, Laos-born Soukananh Thongsing of Auckland and Christchurch’s Stephen Hill round out the squad, who depart for Europe and North American to get intensive final training before heading to Glasgow.

Star strikers out The All Whites’ clash with South Africa next week has been further weakened with the withdrawal of attacking pair Shane Smeltz and Kosta Barbarouses. New Zealand had already named a squad short of several first choice players for the match at Mt Smart Stadium, with the likes of Winston Reid, Tommy Smith and Chris Wood opting to rest following club commitments. South Africa, too, have been hampered by the withdrawal of 11 players, now both Barbarouses and Smeltz have been forced to pull out due to injury.

Big Bash signing

Hockey umpire Karen Bennett is aiming for Rio.

The Brisbane Heat have lured clean-hitting Nathan Reardon back home from Adelaide to bolster their batting line-up for this summer’s Big Bash League. Queensland left-hander Reardon was one who slipped through the Heat’s grasp in the opening seasons of the BBL but they have made the 29-year-old their first new signing for BBL04.

After stints with the Melbourne Renegades and Strikers, Reardon has a career T20 strike-rate of 122 from 49 matches.

Young rider set for Melbourne test

Rakaia equestrian Maddie Crowe is ready to take on the Aussies in the Oceania Young Rider Championships in Melbourne next month.

A fortnight out from the event, Crowe is quietly confident her 12-year-old thoroughbred gelding Brogan will peak in time for the trans-Tasman three-day eventing contest.

Horse and rider have had two and a half years to fine-tune their partnership.

Crowe is currently a working pupil at Clarke Johnstone’s stable in Hamilton.

Johnstone has also been selected to coach the four-strong young rider contingent, which includes fellow Cantabrian Bonnie Farrant, Jessica Woods and Sarah Young.

“We’ve been aiming for this all season, and done a lot of events,” Crowe said.

In February Crowe claimed the New Zealand Young Rider title at the Bay of Plenty Horse Trials. She followed this up with a fifth placing in the CCI1** event at the Horse of the Year competitions, and took first place in the CCI1* open at the National Three Day Event at Taupo last weekend.

“We dropped back a level to one-star because it was too close to going to Melbourne to risk an injury,” Crowe said.

Brogan’s forte is dressage, backed up with a bold attitude

toward cross-country.

“He’s very good on the flat, but he’s a very good jumper too – I’ve got a lot of faith in him,” she said.

The horses leave for Melbourne on Saturday, and the young riders follow on Sunday,

until then it will be business as usual for Crowe.

“We will be working on fitness and dressage schooling.”

Crowe rates the New Zealand team’s chances highly.

“It’s a very strong team – Sarah has got a very good horse,

Jess is strong and Bonnie is always consistent,” she said.

It is the first Oceania eventing clash since 2012, when the Australian team rode off against the Kiwis at McLeans Island, near Christchurch, where Crowe competed as a junior.

Adore Me picks up best barrier draw Champion harness racing mare Adore Me looks set to be the shortest priced favourite of Harness Jewels day at Cambridge next week after she picked up the best draw of the hotspots in yesterday’s barrier draw.

New Zealand’s queen of the race track will begin from barrier five over the 1609 metre mobile distance – with her closest rival, Helena Jet, drawn directly to her inside.

The draw should mean despite having been beaten at her last start when she took on the boys in the Taylor Mile at Alexandra Park, that Adore Me will start at the slimmest odds of the day.

That mantle had been set aside for her unbeaten stable mate Follow The Stars, but when he was given barrier 14 his odds became a little more attractive.

Unbeaten in six runs to date,

Follow The Stars will still start favourite – and probably still win – however, now punters will enjoy a price of around $1.60 as opposed to the $1.25 they would have received had he drawn the front line.

Follow The Stars wasn’t the only big gun to cop the sharp end of the stick during the barrier draw.

Brilliant three-year-old filly will have to overcome a second line draw after she picked up the 13 saddlecloth – further aggravated by the fact her arch-rival, Ideal Belle, drew favourably in barrier five.

The most unfortunate in the draw yesterday though was Robert Dunn.

The West Melton horseman has two chances of drawing well in the four-year-old Emerald with his star pacers Franco

Ricky May and Helena Jet in winning form at Ashburton.

Nelson and Elios, but couldn’t manage one decent draw with the pair snaring spots 12 and 14 respectively.

Add to that Say My Name drawing 12 and All Royal Gal being given the outside of the front row in the three-year-old Ruby – and life dealt the in-form

trainer some sour tasting lemons.

Three-year-old pacers Isaiah and Tiger Tara, look set to fight out one of the other highlights of the day, the three-year-old Emerald after they picked up barriers two and three, their main rival Sky Major wasn’t so

lucky picking up barrier 14.

Isaiah will be one of an imposing 18-horse team from the powerful Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen stable.

The current premiership leaders, with 134 winners for the season before racing on Friday, look set to dominate the day again with four of their runners wearing the coveted Harness Jewels colours for the leading stakes earner in each of the nine divisions.

Purdon has trained a total of 17 Jewels winners in the history of the race day, 10 of which came during his record-breaking partnership with Grant Payne.

His team of 18 is miles ahead of any other trainer in terms of runners starting with Cran Dalgety, Robert Dunn and Tony Herlihy the next best stables with seven runners each.

Confidence dips again

By Brian Fallow Consumer confidence has fallen for the third time this year in the ANZ-Roy Morgan survey and it is at its lowest level since October last year.

But ANZ chief economist Cameron Bagrie said it remained high by historical standards, and if anything he would have expected a bigger effect from the two interest rate increases the Reserve Bank has delivered.

The consumer confidence index dropped to 128 from 134 in April. Any level above 100 indicates more optimists than pessimists. “It’s pretty marginal in the overall scheme of things,” Bagrie said.

“There has been a levelling off but until I see four or five successive movements in the same direction I’m coy about making sweeping statements about what it means.”

While interest rates were

rising, households still had much to smile about, he said, including employment growth, a high dollar making imports cheaper and the fact a strong economy would invariably be reflected in wage growth.

The housing market was slowing, but from a gallop to a canter, and consumers would be more influenced by still-rising house prices than by falling turnover.

Falling export dairy prices would affect business sentiment rather than consumer sentiment and the Budget came late in the survey period.

Of the five questions used to gauge sentiment, the biggest fall recorded was in whether it was a good or bad time to buy a major household item.

A net 36 per cent of respondents thought it was a good time – a high reading but down from a net 47 per cent last month.

better off financially this time next year than about their financial progress over the past year, although both readings were down, by four and three points respectively.

People remained more confident about the next five years than the year ahead, but less so than last month, by four and six points respectively.

Expectations of consumer price inflation and house price inflation both continued to drop from highs last December.

Property to be forfeited A High Court judge has ordered property connected to a failed finance company director is to be forfeited.

Police took unprecedented action last year to restrain assets they said were associated with two jailed Capital + Merchant Finance directors, Neal Nicholls and Wayne Douglas.

When these assets were frozen, the Auckland High Court heard that the police were also targeting two properties allegedly associated with Douglas.

After an application brought by police last week, Justice Susan Thomas has made a profit forfeiture order in connection with one of these properties, which Douglas bought in 2008 and had a capital value of $560,000 as of 2011. The address of this property is suppressed.

During last week’s hearing, it was revealed that a settlement had been reached which involved the second property that was allegedly associated with Douglas and was originally in the police’s sights.

A lawyer representing the police told the High Court last week that a bank account with close to $1 million which was restrained last year is still frozen and at this time not facing an application for forfeiture. The police have alleged these funds are associated with Nicholls. - APNZ

Canterbury law firm Tavendale and Partners has signalled a return to Christchurch’s CBD with the announcement that it is the anchor tenant in a premium commercial development on the corner of Durham and Chester Streets.

The development will be known as Tavendale and Partners House and will comprise two three-storey buildings joined at the top floor by an air bridge.

“Continuing to grow the commercial success of our clients has been our key consideration in choosing where our new Christchurch office should be,” director Mark Tavendale said.

Tavendale and Partners also have an office in Ashburton.

“After reviewing all of the various options, both in terms of location and building, the decision was simple.

“Many of our clients are involved in the agribusiness and commercial sectors. They often don’t have an office in the city so we were adamant from the outset that we needed somewhere where our clients could meet with their various business associates and advisers or simply deal with pressing matters if they arise,” Mr Tavendale said.

Tavendale and Partners is scheduled to be in their new offices by March 2015.

Think about risk before you start chasing returns

T

he recovery from the Global Financial Crisis has been long and slow in New Zealand and offshore.

Central governments have kept interest rates low in order to stimulate their economies and New Zealand is the first developed economy to start raising interest rates, meaning that optimism about the economy is higher here than elsewhere.

Y

oung couples looking for a house in Mid Canterbury are starting to become desperate.

While the national media and the political parties continue to focus on the Auckland housing market, Ashburton is facing a housing crisis of its own.

A report in the Weekend Guardian demonstrates that cashed-up investors are putting extra pressure on the local market and make it harder for first-home buyers to get on to the property ladder.

While Aucklanders worry about overseas investors pushing up the prices, the Ashburton real estate market is dealing with buyers from Auckland and other towns, who have identified Mid Canterbury as a relatively cheap and steady investment area.

It must be galling for local couples or individuals to see multiproperty owners, from inside or outside the district, snapping up the houses they were hoping to call their first home.

The loan-to-value ratio was introduced by the Reserve Bank last year to cool down the Auckland housing market, but is putting added pain on Ashburton buyers who struggle to save the 20 per cent deposit while prices keep climbing further out of their reach.

The new LVR may have decreased the overall demand, but it has pushed many first-home buyers out of the market and given cashed-up investors an open playing field.

Sadly, most of the country, including the politicians and media are obsessed about the small number or overseas people owning properties in New Zealand.

Blocking overseas-based buyers, however, will not fix the main problem of wealthy New Zealanders from Auckland, Blenheim or Ashburton buying their third, fourth or 10th property in Mid Canterbury.

The National Government is dead against capital gains tax, but it is hard to accept that low-income Kiwis are expected to scrape together their 20 per cent deposit while the multiple homeowners keep pocketing their tax-free profits.

Unfortunately, any tinkering on the demand side will not fix the real issue of insufficient supply.

Instead of focusing on buyers, the Government should release more land, educate more builders, cut red tape and build more houses.

YOUR VIEW Second bridge I am sure that within 10 or 12 years the volume of traffic though Ashburton will be so great that NZTA will be compelled to upgrade State High way 1 along West and Archibald streets and or plan a bypass.

The proposed second urban bridge will never be built where proposed, as the growth of Ashburton will be so great that logic will prevail with the need of the through traffic, a bypass will be of necessity.

That will then be at NZTA cost and jurisdiction not the ratepayer of Ashburton. Why is it that the councillors voted in favour of the second urban bridge and for it to be funded by rates.

The same councillors vote in favour to build the art gallery museum also at a lavish cost and yet still do not know the final costs. And most of the running cost will also be on the ratepayer.

should be upgrading West Street and Archibald Street to four lanes, especially through the traffic lights to allow better traffic flow.

The council owns most of the land on the north side of Archibald Street anyway. The mayor tries to have a leg in each camp and is not making a very good job of it.

I thought we voted for councillors to work prudently for the future of Ashburton without putting undue burden on the ratepayer.

It is time for the ratepayers of Ashburton to stand up and make their real feelings obvious to the individual councillors.

Salmon release In reply to “Trish” (Ashburton Guardian, May 19) Jay Graybill, chief executive of Central South Island Fish & Game responds: Provisions within the Conservation Act 1983 allow Fish & Game to use various devices and materials for the taking of sports fish “for the purposes of scientific investigation or data collection”. For investigating the alleged illegal release of salmon into Lake Camp, the use of gill nets was the most effective method for capturing fish in order to remove otoliths for chemical analysis. Recreational anglers are prohibited from using such methods.

ot so long ago, the word “Racism” leapt off the Guardian pages into my consciousness.

A smile came to my face and my heart instantly, and not, as you might think, because I approve of racism.

Far from it.

I’ve been involved in the field of anti-racism and human rights for more than 40 years, and of all the places I’ve lived Ashburton is by far the most tainted by the bigotry.

It’s the elephant in Mid Canterbury’s living room.

I have never before encountered the degree of prejudice I have in Ashburton and, what’s more, those who have exhibited it, have seemed quite proud of their biased stance.

The degree of denial and justification astounds me.

I’m sure there are similar things happening elsewhere, but in my experience, most people clinging to these views in other places, at least have the knowledge and the guilty conscience to hide their views.

The prohibited grounds of discrimination are set out in section 21 of the Human Rights Act. They are: Age (from age 16 years)

We’re told population growth in Mid Canterbury is heading towards a third of us being overseas born.

These are people from cultures other than the rugby, racing and beer one we seem so proud of, who have the same civil rights as any other New Zealander.

You may work with them, go to school with them or play sport with them.

It’s time for us to get up with the play and realise everyone has a part.

I met one person, who, in the space of an hour told me everyone with an intellectual disability should be taken out the back and shot, all brown people are thieves and came up with some foul words I’d never heard before to express his distaste for others of a different sexual orientation.

All these were spewed out within earshot of people he so disgustingly reviled.

What infuriated me most

was his belief, a few minutes after meeting me, that I would automatically agree with him.

I have seen people shouting at people in wheelchairs in the belief that their condition made them deaf as well.

One of the most painful occasions was walking with a teenager with multiple disabilities, when a group of kids started calling out “retard”, “handicap”, and “special” (said in a very sarcastic tone).

He became very upset and said: “They are talking about me aren’t they?”

It took a lot of discussion to explain the situation to him.

That young man now runs his own business.

I take my hat off to the the young man who told the Guardian his story about growing up gay in Ashburton a couple of years ago.

I wonder if his frankness and honesty helped, or if kids are still saying “that’s so gay” in a derogatory tone, ignored by the adults around them.

Ashburton is often described as a great place to bring up kids.

Maybe it is if you are white and middle class.

But not if you are different.
