Summer singing school now in session By Katie todd

Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz

If you’re on your way past the Ashburton Trust Event Centre this week, keep an ear out for the hard-working vocal chords of 149 Mid Canterbury Summer Singing School (MCSSS) students. The group launched into a week of practice yesterday before they bring a musical theatre production to the stage on Friday and Saturday. It’s the biggest production yet for the MCSSS, which has been operating each January for 18 years and is musically helmed by Ashburton singing tutor Jo Castelow. “We now have people from all over, from as far as Timaru and Christchurch, and each time brings a new mix of voices,” said Castelow. Some singers have been involved in the week-long course for more than 10 years, she said,

while more than half of this year’s junior group are newcomers. The group range in age from 9 to 21 years and includes members of NAZDA and first-year university students. This year’s production is themed Time Travellers and will cover musical theatre and tunes from across the ages – from My Fair Lady and Bing Crosby to recent hits like Hamilton and Moana, along with everything in between, Castelow said. “Among the juniors everyone knows the songs from Moana, but they find that they love singing the older ones just as much,” she said. And not only does the theme provide something for everyone in the audience, she said, but gives the young singers the opportunity to learn about various musicals. The group received their music a month ago, and auditioned for solo positions on Sunday. They are currently undergoing two days of musical

A number of older buildings around the Ashburton District will shortly be sporting signs that spell out how they rank against new building standards. As part of the on-going drive to ensure all buildings will be earthquake safe, the Ashburton District Council will be sending signs to owners of buildings built prior to 1976 and will be asking them to display those signs prominently on the outside of their property. The public notification is part

It’s been a long process getting to this point, council building services manager Michael Wong said, but the placard templates had now arrived and these would be sent to property owners over the next month. The placards would serve a two fold purpose – making the public aware of a building’s compliance level and encouraging owners to carry out necessary strengthening work. Wong anticipates there will be

Buildings that have not been assessed will be given the lowest rating until an assessment is done, Wong said. There had been a proposal to change the rules so the cut-off date for engineering assessment would have moved forward to cover all buildings built before 2004 and that would have seen hundreds of buildings around

and that dramatically reduced the number of buildings coming into the net locally. If a building is required to have a placard displayed it will contain information on the percentage it complies with building standards and the year with which it will need to be strengthened to come up to code, Wong said. Older buildings that have been assessed and found to be up to strength or that have already been strengthened will not need to display placards. Details on the placard-bearing

Te Araroa walkers are on the rise, benefiting the summer tourism industry in Methven. 3000-kilomeMany who do the 3000-kilome tre trail, which runs the length of New Zealand, end up in the ski town, as it is a natural resting point near the uncrossable Rakaia River. Methven i-SITE consultant Lyndsay Agnew said December to February was peak season for trail walkers, and she was assisting about half a dozen per week. “Most of them are doing the whole trail or the whole South Island, depending on how much time they have got,” she said. “They are really interesting people, you have to be a certain breed to want to go and walk 3000 kilometres.” They mostly came from Europe and North America, and walked north to south, hitch-hiking into Methven from above Lake Coleridge. They generally stayed in the campground or backpacker lodges in Methven. “It’s nice to have them here and they spread the word when they go back,” she said. Walkers rejoin the trail on Blackford Road in the Rakaia Gorge, and Methven Travel provides transport on the “empty” section of its school bus run, and operates an on-demand shuttle service in school holidays. The Te Araroa section through Mid Canterbury goes from here to the Hakatere Heron Road, taking a public access easement over Glenariffe Station, then crossing the 60,000-hectare Hakatere Conservation Park. Among those undertaking Te Araroa is American Clayton Beckett. His trail name is Chef, he has a travel blog at chefspecial5.com and is from Connecticut. The 26-year-old is walking the South Island section, south to north, and was in Methven at the weekend. He said he ended up

While taking out the bins yesterday morning, she said she noticed that the security camera had been taken and the padlock had been cut off from her honesty box. All money had been cleared from the box before the theft, but Raisbeck said she was still gutted to discover the break-in, which she presumes is the work of people “who don’t care about other people”. hitchhiked to Methven, and left at the weekend aiming to hitch to north of Lake Coleridge to resume the trail. Beckett said the trail to date had had many river crossings, and some mountainous terrain, as well as farm tracks and dirt roads. Besides the road walks, which he did not like as they lacked the wilderness appeal of true trail walking, and a lack of markers in some areas, he was enjoying the scen-

south. “A lot of Kiwis don’t even know about the trail,” Beckett said. He was not worried about being without a cellphone. “If you don’t have service it’s not going to help you and you are not going to get that in the mountains,” he said. Dusting of snow heralds winter’s nigh BY KATIE TODD

KATIE.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

As Mid Canterbury awoke and the cloud momentarily lifted yesterday morning, snow-capped alps were revealed. A cold front stalled over the South Island brought snow down to 1000m on Thursday – including a 10 centimetre dusting on Mt Hutt. More snow fell to 2000m yesterday. MetService meteorologist Ciaran Doolin said “temperatures will gradually recover over the South Island through the weekend but there are a few chilly days and nights in store.” Today and tomorrow are also forecast to bring snow to Mt Hutt. In Ashburton, rain is expected this morning and Sunday is forecast to be mainly fine. Left – This week’s temperatures brought a covering of fresh snow to the mountains. Water dispute set to reignite BY SUE NEWMAN

SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

A water supply battle that saw property owners pitched against the Ashburton District Council more than a decade ago, could be about to reignite. Issues with the Ashburton Airport water supply has council officers looking at options for improving the supply. These could include chlorination of the current supply, extending bore depth or revisiting the ex-

tension of Ashburton’s town supply to the airport. This was discussed in 2005 when several property owners along Seafield Road found their wells had gone dry. A public meeting was held and residents left the council in little doubt that they were not prepared to pay to connect to the town supply. The issue arose again in 2008 when another cluster of wells were dry. Council commercial manager

Colin Windleborn said the problem with the airport’s supply was two-fold – quality and quantity. The bore dated back to World War Two and was at the end of its useful life, he told councillors at Thursday’s finance and business services committee meeting. “In addition there have been increasingly high nitrate readings and we may need to look at an alternative supply rather than a deeper bore.”

Because the council was the airport owner, it had an obligation to provide a potable water supply to airport users, Windleborn said. Nitrates were an issue, he said and the council’s monitoring over the past 12 months showed levels were rising. Extending the town supply to the airport had been discussed in the past but there was such an outcry from Seafield Road residents it was shelved, coun-

cillor Russell Ellis said. He suggested it could be worth revisiting that option and the costs would be spread across all Seafield Road property owners. It was a project that would sit well with the council’s long term plans to extend the supply to the north and east of town, he said. While $100,000 has been built into the council’s long term plan for water supply improvements at the airport, council staff will explore all water supply options.

$230m the prediction for Lake Hood’s future By Sue NewmaN

Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Lake Hood and its residential development is forecast to generate well over $230 million in building and furnishing spending in the Ashburton District. And when you add to that the intangible social and community cost benefits, it’s a project that produces a massive return on the original $120,000 invested to buy the lake site, says Ashburton Aquatic Park Charitable Trust chairman Graham Kennedy. The lake’s benefits as a recreational resource were obvious, but it was the economic impact of the entire development that was staggering, he said. What had started out as a desire to provide a body of recrea-

tional water close to Ashburton had become a development that now had a capital value in excess of $120 million he told guests at a dinner on Thursday night, held to mark a meeting held 30 years ago to gauge interest in a manmade lake. The 50 people who turned up at that first meeting and who gave the project the thumbs up, set the wheels in motion for the development of what would become the district’s largest community project. Many of those were at the Lakehouse on Thursday night. “This project has turned out to be, in economic benefit to Ashburton terms, the largest community project ever created in Canterbury at an unbe-

team led the way nationally in requiring the registration of boats using the lake. At the outset the team hoped to achieve 400 registrations; currently there are more than 1800, excluding yachts, kayaks and sailboats, Kennedy said. “The residential subdivision now has approximately 180 homes and growing and there’s a genuine cross section of the community living there from retirees to young families.” The lake and the lake extension project are consented for up to 500 houses. “The return to Mid Canterbury is huge.” That return would continue to grow and the future for the lake was unlimited, Kennedy said.

lievably low community cost. It cost around $5 million to build the lake, whereas the proposed Christchurch rowing facility is budgeted to cost $160 million,” Kennedy said. Of that $5 million less than $1 million came from ratepayers, he said. Lake Hood is now the largest man-made recreational lake in New Zealand and the largest community-created recreational facility in Canterbury, covering more than 370 acres. When the development began it was anticipated passive users would make up the bulk of visitors and that had proven correct, with more than 200,000 (excluding residents) annually. A resident is calling for Ashburtonians to look out for themselves, their neighbours and their communities following a burglary at her house on Thursday morning. The Peter Street resident, who wished not to be named, was targeted by a thief who took a liking to her watches and those of her partner. The burglary occurred at around 9am, just as the resident was returning home from a meeting. By the time she noticed the fridge had mysteriously moved, the thief was able to escape through the front door unseen. She said five watches were taken and four of her partner’s, along with her hair straighteners. While they may never be able to get their property back, she is still hoping that information will come forward about the identity of the thief. It would benefit the wider community to know who is responsible and if everyone “looked out for each other” more often, she said. “Look after your neighbours and community … one by one we can all stop this behaviour from continuing,” she said. “Also, I hope these people will start looking into getting a real job and get the help they need.” A police spokesperson said enquiries were ongoing into the incident. The burglary is one of several incidents following a spike in the number of burglaries and thefts from cars around Ashburton in January and February. Two thefts from cars and a stolen bike have also been reported in the past week. “The feeling of being burgled in your own place … it’s not that fun, especially [as] we have only been there for just over a month,” said the resident.

Stadium trust’s business done BY SUE NEWMAN

SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Ashburton’s Stadium Trust, the driving force that gathered millions of community dollars to kickstart the build of Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre, could soon be out of business. When Ashburton District councillors took a look at the council controlled organisation’s statement of intent (SOI) they decided that virtually every one of its objectives had been achieved. The trust was established in 2005 and its objective was to raise $5 million from the com-

munity for the sports complex. The deal with the council was that work on the project would not start until the money had been raised. Also in the document was a payment schedule the trust had to follow as it passed over the community money to the council. In June this year $171,917 is to be paid over and when the final payment of $10,000 is made in June next year its financial commitments will have been met. While there was nothing in the trust’s SOI that indicated it was considering winding up,

that was a question the council would have to ask when the last cheque was presented, council business support manager Paul Brake said. It would be the council’s decision whether or not to wind up the trust and the trustees would have no option but to follow council’s directive, he said. Trust members had suggested in the past that it could have extended its fundraising if the council decided to go ahead with a major addition to the centre’s facilties, such as a hydroslide. This option has since been discounted.

What’s expected from a public toilet today is a far cry from what passed muster in the past. Gone are the days of public toilets that are austere concrete constructions, foyers exposed to the elements and cubicles hidden in darkness. Today’s public convenience users expect something that’s as close to home comfort as it is possible to get. So taking those expectations on board, the Ashburton District Council decided it was time the last of its concrete white houses disappeared.

First of the remaining toilet blocks to go will be the playground facility in the Ashburton Domain. Its mirror images in Argyle Park and the domain’s picnic grounds will be next on the list. Council open spaces manager David Askin expects a new, prebuilt toilet will be trucked into the domain by the end of the month and he expects it to be commissioned by the end of April. The new facility will boast four uni-sex cubicles. Demolition of the 1972 version will then take place. The concrete block toilets were a standard design used regularly by local authorities in the 1970s.

■ ASHBURTON CIVIC CENTRE

Looking at the best to build the best BY SUE NEWMAN

SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

With land purchase agreements in the bag, Ashburton’s district councillors are wasting no time in exploring design options and opportunities for the district’s new civic centre and library. On Wednesday councillors and council staff visited several Christchurch libraries, including Lincoln, Kaiapoi and Sumner’s community centre/library. That visit was a good learning exercise in how those projects were managed, council business services manager Paul Brake said. Future site visits are likely to include Kapiti and Gisborne. Last week the council reached agreement with both the Methodist Church and Paul May Motors to buy land and buildings that will provide it with a large tract of land fronting Baring Square east and for half of the Havelock Street block, on which to build the new facility. The Methodist Church purchase includes land and part of the current church building, a section that houses its hall, meeting and service rooms. The deal with Paul May on his Havelock Street building comes with a con-

Late last year the council bought 255 Havelock Street as an investment and to future proof the site. From this point, Brake said, there is a relatively clear-cut process to follow. Before any demolition work

begins on the church hall or the former County Council building, strengthening work must be carried out on the church, he said. When the church deal became unconditional, property manager Ken Leadley said he was hopeful strengthening work would begin within three months and be completed by the end of next

year. Once the church has finished its work, the council will demolish the church hall and the former County Council building and then the Havelock Street May building. A small brick building that is the Historic Places Trust office will be retained and will become part of the new build.

With the purchase agreements secured, Brake said the project control group would meet on April 13, update the build timeline and start the process of appointing a project manager for the development. He anticipates it will be at least 18 months before any work starts on the project.

The Ashburton District Council is offering a dog registration and microchipping amnesty day on April 7.

Council offers microchipping for free BY SUE NEWMAN

SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

It has to be a dog owner’s dream, the opportunity to have your dog microchipped for free. That’s the deal the Ashburton District Council is offering and they’re adding to that an opportunity to make unregistered dogs legal with an opportunity to make a late registration without penalty or fine. The dog registration and microchip amnesty day will be held

at the Ashburton Dog Shelter on April 7 Registration fees will make tardy dog owners legal dog owners until June 30. Urban dog owners will pay just $18.50 for that three month registration and rural owners of desexed dogs just $12. A vet certificate will be required as proof of de-sexing. Council environmental services group manager Jane Donaldson said the fine-free day would

help dog owners avoid a penalty of $300 if they were caught with an unregistered dog. “We have many responsible dog owners in our district who microchip and make sure their dogs are registered each year, but unfortunately there are others who don’t. “We want to give these people the opportunity to get their dogs microchipped and [the] registration sorted without the concern of incurring a late fee; this is your

chance to avoid those costs,” she said. The SPCA will be working with the council’s animal control services on the day helping to microchip dogs and answering any questions owners may have. They will also have giveaways, sponsored by Purina. Under the Dog Control Act, all dogs must be registered and owners who fail to do this can be fined. Registration fees are used to help fund council’s animal

control services, including responding to and investigating animal complaints, patrols of public places, operation of the dog pound and providing dog safety education programmes. In the 2016/17 year, there were 6530 dogs registered in the Ashburton District. The amnesty day will be held at the Ashburton Dog Shelter at 19 Range Street in the Riverside Industrial Estate between 9am and 3pm, April 7.

Ed Sheeran fever is set to hit New Zealand with the hugely successful artist beginning his tour tonight in Auckland. NZME’s Siena Yates sat down with the global superstar for a chat.

Sheeran: The ordinary bloke megastar “

I feel like we’re really focusing on this subject,” Ed Sheeran says, trying to move the conversation on. We’re talking about him – and how people feel about him. He’s “very aware” not everyone is a fan. And he’s right, we are focusing on the subject. Because despite the fact he’s about to play six huge stadium shows in New Zealand – setting a new record for the country’s highest-selling tour – he’s also copped online hate from people who “don’t get” his success and come under plenty of fire simply for inspiring that controversial Dunedin mural. “People just hate that I’m doing well,” he says. And he knows why. As we discuss how he’s always described as genuine and downto-earth, he interjects: “I think that pisses people off.” “Honestly I think that’s one of the reasons [I’m so polarising]. I think pop stars are meant to be pop stars, they’re meant to seem a bit larger than life.” Before I met him, Sheeran did seem that way. Making my way backstage for our interview, I was stopped by at least four different security guards. Badges and credentials were checked and even people with full access struggled to convince them to let me near the pop star. As we set up, the videographers told me how “nice” and “approachable” Sheeran is and I nodded disbelievingly. I was a sceptic

to start with, but having seen him perform for nearly 60,000 people the night before and being forced to jump through hoops just to get near him, it felt even harder to buy. He was officially named the best-selling recording artist in the world last year and has been selling out tours since his hit album Divide was released last March. His six-show stadium tour of New Zealand will be our biggest ever – and the biggest in Australasia – having smashed the record for highest ticket sales for a single tour. On the flipside, Sheeran was “trolled” so much last year he quit Twitter and gave up his smartphone – “there was no point waking up and looking at that bile, it was better to wake up and live your life,” he says. So how is it that he’s simultaneously one of the world’s most successful and most hated artists? “The thing ... people hate the most is; ‘He’s just a normal guy’. People are like ‘No he’s not!’ So you writing that would definitely piss someone off,” he says. But I’ll write it anyway because remarkably, Sheeran really is just as down-to-earth as all the reports have suggested. After all the hubbub just to get to him, when he comes in, he’s just ... normal. Almost disappointingly so. We make small talk, compare taonga, he recommends a country cover of my favourite song of

his and asks for tips on where to go when he gets to Dunedin. I ask how he’s managed to stay the same and he shrugs. “Well I don’t really do anything that’s out of the ordinary,” he says. Then, probably noting the doubt in my face, he adds: “Like, I’ve got four of my school mates out on tour with me and we do what we did in school – just on a kind of bigger budget. “Yesterday we sat and drank wine and watched Sons of Anarchy. There’s nothing too out of the ordinary, it’s just we’re doing it in a really nice hotel room.” Life has changed, of course. But if Sheeran’s insisting fame hasn’t changed it, then I ask about the other biggest thing that could happen to a 27-year-old bloke: His recent engagement to his childhood sweetheart, Cherry Seaborn. The singer proposed over the Christmas holiday and admits he’s “had a lot more public interest” in him since. “I’ve never had paparazzi outside my home – ever. And then as soon as the engagement was announced they were just there, that was quite weird. I’ve never been a Hello or OK magazine kind of guy, but I think ... people like the story of it.” He adds, thoughtfully: “I think it’s going to change her life quite a bit more than mine and I have to be quite wary of that.” This is, presumably, where

rumours of Sheeran’s impending retirement from music came from – rumours he’s quick to shut down. “I never said that,” he says, clearly not dispelling it for the first time. “I said I would basically slow down. What I’m doing now is, I’m on a three-year tour to promote Divide and if I had a baby and I was away for three years and I came home and it was a toddler already without me, that’s something I’m not really up for doing.” Fans were also concerned Sheeran’s marriage would spell the end of his career, in that without the heartbreak and pining, what would happen to the music? “The two biggest songs on the record were Perfect and Shape of You and they’re both written about Cherry and both happy experiences. I used to think that as well; like, ‘oh shit I need to be heartbroken to make good music’, but I don’t think it matters,” he says. Sheeran will kick off his New Zealand tour today and he’s surprised to learn it will be the country’s biggest tour ever. He grins saying, “Is it really?” before awkwardly adding: “Cool”, clearly unsure how to react to such news. But it’s news like this which has bolstered his previously “thin skin” and helped him care less about his haters. “I feel like I make music that people either really love or really

hate, and thankfully there’s more on the love than there is on the hate and that’s why I’ve come not to care. For the people who don’t like me in New Zealand for instance, it’s the biggest tour that’s ever happened in New Zealand, so that outweighs it,” he says. “I get to tour around the world, I get to make the music I want to make and play it to people who like it and then I also get the opportunity to convert people ... so it’s a pretty win-win situation.” Is he cocky? A little. But with this level of success, why shouldn’t he be? Is he also likeable, relatable and easy to chat to? Surprisingly, yes. When I leave, he grips my shoulder, wishes me a safe trip home and thanks me for coming. Then his people march me back out to the street and my visitor’s sticker is promptly taken from me, lest I try to sneak back in later. It’s strange because everything about it feels like visiting a megastar, except the megastar himself.

How you can see and block the apps tracking you on

T

he Facebook/Cambridge Analytica scandal has a lot of people looking at just how much data the social network has on them and all the intricate ways the company extracts information out of people. One thing we can all agree on regarding the amount of data

Facebook Facebook collects off you is this: it’s a hell of a lot of it. So how do you keep that data safe? How do you stop Facebook from tracking your every move? If you’re not keen on deleting your Facebook account, there are some other steps you can take to secure your privacy.

Step 1:

Click on the arrow on the top right of your Facebook page on your browser (assuming you’re viewing Facebook on a computer rather than a mobile device)

Step 2: Select “settings” from the dropdown menu

Step 3:

Go to “apps”, on the left-hand column

Step 4:

Try not to panic when you realise the huge list of apps tracking you via Facebook (the list probably includes some apps you don’t even remember hearing about, let alone allowing them to track you). These random apps have access to an incredible amount of your personal information, even when it doesn’t seem to be even remotely relevant to them (why would the “Which The Big Bang Theory character are you?” quiz know my work history or have access to the photos I’ve uploaded to Facebook, for example?)

Step 5:

With your mouse, hover over each of the apps and change the app permissions. You can delete an app completely and the app will no longer be connected to your Facebook account.

Step 6:

You can also just check how much any given app knows about you. Within “apps”, scroll down to “Apps others use”. You can see all the data that, unbeknownst to you (and probably to them), your friends are sharing about you through the apps they authorise in their own accounts.

Keep in mind that, just as your friends are giving away your information through their apps, you are doing the same thing to them, without realising it. This means that protecting your data is not just about your own privacy but about protecting your friends’ privacy too. The good news here, if there’s any, is that you are now armed with the knowledge and can edit the permissions these apps have to dig information about you and potentially spread it around. Note that once you remove an app, Facebook tells you the app will keep the data it has collected about you to date and it’s up to you to contact the app developers about this. – NZME

Markets plunge after Trump move The Dow Jones industrial average plunged 700 points as worries over trade tensions between China and the United States rattled financial markets. The Trump administration announced trade sanctions against China yesterday (NZ time), and Beijing has said it will defend itself. Industrial and technology companies, which depend heavily on foreign trade, took some of the worst losses. Boeing, Caterpillar and Microsoft all fell sharply. Bond prices surged as investors sought cover, sending yields lower. That helped push bank stocks sharply lower too. High-dividend stocks like utilities, another safe-play investment, rose. The S&P 500 index dropped 68 points, or 2.5 per cent, to 2643. The Dow plunged 713 points, or 2.9 per cent, to 23,964. The Nasdaq composite sank 158

points, or 2.2 per cent, to 7181. Trump took the first steps toward imposing tariffs on $US50 billion ($NZ69 billion) in Chinese goods and limiting China’s ability to invest in the US technology industry yesterday, saying the moves were a response to Beijing’s history of forcing US companies to surrender their trade secrets to do business in China. The president directed US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to announce a proposed list of products to be hit with tariff increases within 15 days. After a public comment period, the final list, designed to target Chinese products that benefited from improper access to US technology, will be made public. “The end objective of this is to get China to modify its unfair trading practices,” Everett Eissenstat, deputy assistant to the president for international economic affairs, said. – AP

NEW ZEALAND SHARE MARKET

This Herne Bay mansion has just sold for close to $30 million, complete with helipad and boat shed. 6105sq m property in two titles at 542 and 538 Remuera Road had been sold to a family who came here from China. Speaking from Marseille in France, Simon Herbert said of the Cremorne Street purchase: “We’re very happy. It’s a very special property. We were looking for waterfront but also for a large modern house with presence and position. The house faces north with a touch of west and has exceptional 180-degree views up and down the harbour. “The boat-shed is a great extra although we have yet to plan its use. It’s also one of only a few properties in Auckland with consent to land a helicopter which was on our wishlist, as it will allow us to fly direct to our house in the Bay of Islands,” Herbert said. “Paula will give the house her

special touch although it is in pristine condition and is a credit to its current owners. We are delighted with the purchase and are looking forward to moving.” Brent Hulena said he designed the home last decade for businessman Ross Munroe of Line 7. The concrete structure with basalt cladding, limestone flooring and extensive over-height glazing was designed in 2001 and completed in 2005, Hulena said. “This is a contemporary, sophisticated home of some 1000sq m-plus over three levels including one underground level of wine cellar, media, games and gym areas. The building was conceived to span across the clifftop maximising the views and allowing the many living areas to open on to the outdoor terraces and pool,” Hulena said. – NZME

The sale of an Auckland waterfront home could have set a new national house price record for the year, fetching just under $30 million. Businessman and marina investor and developer Simon Herbert said he and wife Paula had just bought the big Cremorne Street property, a modernist Brent Hulena concrete place with its own boat-shed, helicopter pad, pool overlooking the waterfront and beachfront access. Nick Goodall of CoreLogic said that appeared to set the record to date in 2018. “So far this year, we don’t have any other recorded sales near that amount – nothing exceeding $10m yet. The property at 15 Cremorne Street previously sold for $12.5m in October 2009. Last year, 19 O’Neills Avenue was the top sale at $28.8m,” Goodall said. New Zealand’s most expensive house sale remains the 2013 $39m sale of a Paritai Drive house partly financed by Hanover’s Mark Hotchin to businessman Deyi Shi. Property records show the Cremorne Street property just bought by the Herberts is owned by Stephen Graham Lockwood of insurance business Crombie Lockwood and Lewis Thomas Grant. Graham Wall said he had brokered the deal in an off-market non-advertised sale. “The best part of New Zealand is Auckland and its best suburb is Herne Bay and probably its best street is Cremorne Street. Where else can you live on a beach just five minutes from the CBD?” Wall asked. The Herberts this month also said they had sold one of New Zealand’s most stately city mansions for $25.5 million although as Goodall noted, that deal is yet to appear on official records. Ollie Wall said the Herberts’

OUR VIEW

Winter, tourists just around corner S

ummer days are gone too soon, or at least something to that effect. The days are set to become shorter and darkness will arrive sooner than most of us would want it to. If you haven’t felt the mercury drop a few points this week, you need to shed a few layers of clothing – because there’s no doubt that winter is on the way. And if you need any proof, then you’ll just have to look out over some of our sporting fields this weekend to find it. Our own Mid Canterbury senior cricket competition finished last Saturday and here we are just one week on facing the opening weekend of senior rugby. Yes, that’s right. Just one week.

Cricketing whites and tennis shoes will soon be replaced with rugby jerseys and football boots and wickets will become fields as the transition really kicks in. Gone are the days of a decent separation between our summer and winter sports and they now ride heavily on the coat tails of each other. But it’s an exciting time for this region to know that winter is just about to arrive. Our tourism sector will begin

to boom again as thousands flock to Mt Hutt to enjoy its white gold and we become a through-way for those travelling south, looking for the same sort of adventure on one of the southern skifields. It seems pertinent that we discuss tourism considering the hotbed of conversation that unfolded in Thursday’s council finance and business support committee meeting where councillor Stuart Wilson didn’t hold back on his thoughts around the funding of Experience Mid Canterbury. When councillors were asked to accept a statement of intent (SOI) from Experience Mid Canterbury that set out how it would run its business for the year, Wilson described the

document as a heap of “gobbledygook”. He asked for a statement of intent that outlined the intentions of the Experience Mid Canterbury group and what the expectation from council was as well. A fair request considering the funding sits at $400,000 while tourism operators contribute only another $100,000. Councillor Wilson holds some valid points, there’s no doubt about that and not for the first time this year, he needs to be commended for being one to not shirk around things and instead speak his mind on subjects that hold a major part in our district’s make up. But how you receive his thoughts, very much depends

on what side of the fence you sit on. For ratepayers, the thought of a lessened rate is always going to appeal whereas for those who operate tourism businesses within our district there’s likely to be a little resistance in incurring a new cost. Experience Mid Canterbury do good work in promoting what this district has to offer and they ensure that the word about Mid Canterbury is spread as far, and as wide, as it most possibly can. But who should foot the bill could end up being a debate that rages long into the night before a resolution is found and just who comes out on top is, at this stage anyway, unclear to the naked eye.

ence in all markets. Tourism is, afterall, New Zealand’s largest export industry in terms of foreign exchange earnings and directly employs 7.5 per cent of the New Zealand workforce. In 2017 international tourism expenditure increased 17.1 per cent ($1.7 billion) to $11.8 billion and contributed 17.4 per cent to New Zealand’s total exports of goods and services. Domestic tourism expenditure increased 7.4 per cent ($1.4 billion) to $20.2 billion.

A big portion of this spend is generated by local tourism operators “funding” and partnering with local RTO (Experience Mid Canterbury) to enhance our product in the market place. Does councillor Wilson expect Mid Canterbury businesses to keep treading water (no pun) or have their hands free to attract both the domestic and international dollar. Again, this is another shortsighted response from a councillor who lacks knowledge in the broader economics in our region.

One thinks we need to be working more as a team in our area and growing our presence in tourism/ farming to make sure we are continuing to grow, develop and share our amazing Mid Canterbury community. Councillor Wilson has always made it clear he isn’t interested in tourism, he has managed to shut down Grow Mid Canterbury, force Experience Mid Canterbury to close its i-Site(s) now again forcing EMC to operate on a $386k grant which returns around $169 million in tourism spend in our commu-

nity which is not a bad return on ratepayers’ investment. Council you need to start showing some respect to our community as your lack of understanding is starting to show cracks in your organisation from increasing rates to increasing fees for public use of facilities and now back-stabbing a Council Controlled Organisation in the media when one thinks all you could have done was pick up the phone and speak directly to EMC, not going for glory in the press. LETTERS Housing NZ I am writing in response to your article on Housing NZ in the Guardian on 05/03/2018. In the article it says that there is going to be 10 more new State houses available to people and their families. It also says that these 10 houses will be one-bedroom houses. That’s only enough room for one person or a couple with no children. How does this help couples with children in the Ashburton area? It states that they are going to be building on the sections located at 23-25 Allens road. Well that land would be big enough to build at least four or three-bedroom homes. That would help four families in Ashburton rather than one person per house like they say they are going to build there. I don’t understand why we need 10, one-bedroom houses. Where is the justification in that? Vanessa

Tourism It concerns me the lack of tourism focus within our local council. When I read comments from councillor Stuart Wilson in yesterday’s press article. Balance seems to be the key to a strong local economy of which Mid Canterbury is lucky to have. With a strong rural sector and growing domestic and international tourism Mid Canterbury has a lot to offer or so it would seem. In the wake of retail shops struggling and businesses calling out for more foot traffic I would have thought Wilson’s focus would be broader. Towns in neighbouring districts have seen a huge increase in tourism spend. You only need take a small drive south to Fairlie or Tekapo to see those results. One feels that if Mid Canterbury is to keep its head above water then it needs to have a strong pres-

Shaw goes out on a limb J

ames Shaw, who, singlehandedly, saved the Green Party from political obliteration in last year’s election – after Metiria Turai’s complete meltdown – has now struck another blow for brand Green. In fact, he may even have broken the political mould in a manner never previously even contemplated by any political party in Aotearoa or, for that matter, by any other such organisation ever to grace our planet Earth. In a breath-taking attempt to differentiate the Greens from the generally humdrum nature of Confidence and Supply partners in a much larger administration, he has offered no fewer than 42, Green-allocated, parliamentary questions to the National Opposition to make of them what they will, in what many may see as a doomed attempt to garner sufficient credibility to survive the 2020 election. At present – and always assuming the current fragile coalition lasts until the next gazetted election – the Green role seems simply to put “patsy” – “undemanding” – questions to its senior partner (Labour) to enable Labour spokespeople to advance the government’s causes; the “questions”, therefore, in terms of the effective use of the democratic process, are a waste of everybody’s time. Shaw’s view is that parliamentary questions should see Ministers defending their poli-

EYE ON POLITICS

cies and being constantly held to account. In other words, he wants to see Question Time made better use of and if that means sacrificing most of his party’s official allocation of questions, for the benefit of the Greater Good then he is happy to offer them up. Such apparent lofty altruism has caught a few of us gnarled veterans, who tend to comment about such matters, on the hop. This is either the most naive move since King Canute attempted to stop the tide advancing – even if he was doing it simply to prove to his starstruck subjects that he couldn’t, despite some of them thinking he was a god – or the shrewdest piece of would-be political manipulation since Machiavelli was a boy. Will it bring kudos or calamity to the Greens? Surely, the thinking behind it is too subtle for its own good and likely to be misunderstood by ordinary Greenies everywhere, quite apart from othercoloured politics followers. “Why”, they will cry, “give airtime to your opponents to the disadvantage of the major

party to which you have only recently attached yourself?” Shaw may speak nobly of the Green interpretation of democracy at work, as outlined in its majestic manifesto, but might this not be a leap too far? Needless to say, National’s newly-crowned leader, Simon Bridges, has welcomed the Green manoeuvre with suitable solemnity and appreciation, recognising the significance of this selfless Green gesture. Behind the dignified veneer, however, one can’t help feeling Bridges and his numerous cohorts cannot believe their luck. Forty-two bonus opportunities with which to whack the Government, when many of the Nats still feel they were swindled out of victory by chameleon Winston. Wow! What strikes me as significant is that nominally, co-leader Shaw, who has been de facto leader on his own since Metiria bit the dust will, in the not too distant future, find himself encumbered by a female co-leader – as per the party’s utterly consistent constitution – Marama Davidson or Julie-Anne Genter, perhaps, neither of whom may share Shaw’s seemingly remarkable far-sightedness. Thus, he has felt the need to go out on this precarious limb while he is still the sole decision-maker. Not really that there seems to be any necessity to hurry; the Green leader-election process is one of the slowest-moving in the world.

Why a group of people, who would fit comfortably into a London taxi, should take so long to agree on which two of them – male and female – should be their leaders, has always baffled me. Watch this space, but take your time over it. Elsewhere, if only to emphasise what the world has lost, the gracious presence of former President, Barack Obama, is currently amongst us, albeit with minimal fanfare and maximum secrecy. He will no doubt be playing golf with Sir John Key – at Kauri Cliffs, according to ace investigative journalist, Patrick “Hercule” Gower, once of Newshub fame – though the film coverage from about five metres will not make it easy to be quite sure how the President got out of the distant bunker we think we saw him land in. However distant though and however unlikely many of us will have the chance to meet him, that he is here at all is a real pleasure, if a hideous reminder of the bigot and bully who followed the statesmanlike Mr Obama into the White House. esterday, I had the intriguing experience of dissecting hearts at school. It was fascinating to open up the wonders of the heart – to see the chambers, the valves, the blood vessels. We were struck by the amazing complexity of a pump that will, on average, beat around 2 billion times in an average human lifetime (we get twice the number of heartbeats per lifetime compared to the average of other species). The more you delve into the structure and function of the heart the more incredible it seems. The heart is central to our bodies in so many ways. From ancient times the heart has been used as a term to describe more than the biological

pump in our chest. Going beyond the sustaining of physical life there is the concept of the heart as the centre of all of life. The Bible speaks of the heart as being the wellspring of life. Here the heart is used to describe the very core of who we are as people. Our minds, our emotions, our wills – all of this is summed up in the term heart. It is all of what we might call “me”. From this flows the course of our life. It is not the outside world that produces the flow of our life, but the inside world of the heart.

External environmental factors can have considerable impact on our lives, but it is the state of our heart that produces the outcome. When you consider the condition of the world as the accumulation of the outcomes of people’s hearts – you might wonder about the condition of those hearts. That truly is something to wonder about. Our hearts, individually and collectively are not what they should be. The outcomes are not what we might hope for either. Yet God holds out the promise of better outcomes by dealing with the root cause – the condition of our hearts. God’s Word is His surgeon’s scalpel. It penetrates to the very centre of our heart. It exposes what is wrong.

China threatens to retaliate Primed for economic combat, President Donald Trump has set in motion tariffs on as much as $US60 billion in Chinese imports to the US and accused the Chinese of hightech thievery, picking a fight that could push the global heavyweights into a trade war. China threatened retaliation, and Wall Street cringed, recording one of the biggest drops of Trump’s presidency. But he declared the US would emerge “much stronger, much richer”. It was the boldest example to date of Trump’s “America first” agenda, the culmination of his longstanding view that weak US trade policies and enforcement have hollowed out the nation’s workforce and ballooned the federal deficit. Two weeks ago, with fanfare, he announced major penalty tariffs on steel and aluminium imports that he said threatened national security. However, even as Trump was talking tough at the White House, his administration moved to soften the sting of the metal tariffs, telling Congress the EU, Australia, South Korea and other nations would join Canada and Mexico in gaining an initial exemption. And that raised questions about whether his actions will

PHOTO AP match his rhetoric. China responded by announcing a list of US goods, including pork, apples and steel pipe, it said may be hit with higher import duties. The Commerce Ministry said the higher US tariffs “seriously undermine” the global trading system. The ministry urged the US “to resolve the

concerns of the Chinese side as soon as possible”, and appealed for dialogue “to avoid damage to overall Chinese-US co-operation”. Trump himself, joined by supportive business executives, complained bitterly about the nation’s trade deficit and accused China of stealing America’s prized technology.

Dunedin’s electronic music pioneers Headless Chickens have won the Independent Music NZ (IMNZ) Classic Record award. While the band are most famed for their string of 90s Top 10 hits, like Cruise Control and George, the band received the award for their 1998 debut album Stunt Clown. A much darker and raw experimental record than their later work. It’s an album that has long been regarded as a classic, but now that status is official. Headless Chickens were one of the first New Zealand bands to explore the sonic possibilities of drum machines, synthesisers and samplers in their music.

“Any way you look at it, it is the largest deficit of any country in the history of our world. It’s out of control,” Trump said of the US-China imbalance. The US reported a $US375 billion deficit with China last year, which Trump has blamed for the loss of American jobs and closing of plants. - AP

Pacific garbage patch ‘growing rapidly’ A collection of plastic afloat in the Pacific Ocean is growing rapidly, according to a new scientific estimate. Predictions suggest a buildup of about 80,000 tonnes of plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch between California and Hawaii. This figure is up to 16 times higher than previously reported, say international researchers. One trawl in the centre of the patch had the highest concentration of plastic ever recorded. “Plastic concentration is increasing – I think the situation is getting worse,” said Laurent Lebreton of The Ocean Clean-

up Foundation in Delft, Netherlands, which led the study. “This really highlights the urgency to take action in stopping the in-flow of plastic into the ocean and also taking measures to clean up the

existing mess.” Waste accumulates in five ocean areas, the largest being the patch located between Hawaii and California. The researchers used boats and planes to map this area of

the North Pacific, where rotating currents and winds cause marine debris, including plastic, seaweed and plankton, to converge. The three-year mapping effort showed that plastic pollution is “increasing exponentially and at a faster rate than in the surrounding water”, said the international team. Microplastics accounted for 8 per cent of the total mass of plastic afloat within an area of 1.6 million square kilometres. Of the estimated 1.8 trillions bits of plastic, some were larger than microplastics, including fishing nets, toys, and even a toilet seat. - BBC

Truce agreed in Syrian rebel enclave Carrying their light arms, hundreds of defeated rebels began evacuating with their families yesterday from a devastated town in eastern Ghouta, an effective surrender under a deal with the government after a long siege and bombing campaign of the enclave on the outskirts of Damascus. The departure of the powerful Ahrar al-Sham group – the first such arrangement for

eastern Ghouta – could serve as a blueprint for fighters in other towns, bringing President Bashar Assad’s government closer to ending years of rebellion in the territory just east of the capital. As night fell, Syrian TV showed dozens of white buses carrying opposition fighters and civilians pulling out in a long convoy after being parked all day on a main highway.

Among the 1580 evacuees from the town of Harasta were 413 gunmen, it said. Earlier, a few fighters with automatic rifles slung on their shoulders were seen milling around the buses. As the sun set, a group of rebels knelt on the Harasta highway and prayed. Ahrar al-Sham is a powerful, ultra-conservative Islamic group in Syria. It is one of the

smaller rebel groups based in eastern Ghouta — and the first to acknowledge defeat. Under the agreement with the Assad government, the group’s fighters and their relatives will leave their base in the town of Harasta and head to opposition-controlled Idlib in northern Syria. The deal will see 1500 rebels and 6000 civilians depart, according to the state-affiliated Military Media Center. - AP

Darren Aronofsky claims Jennifer Lawrence became “emotionally overwhelmed” on the set of Mother!. The 49-year-old director has rubbished suggestions that he was responsible for Lawrence tearing her diaphragm on the set of the film. Aronofsky instead insisted that her particular acting style led to the painful injury. He shared: “I wasn’t pushing Jennifer on that day. I was pulling her back, [encouraging her] to remember that we were just making a movie ... I’ve never had that situation where an actor was so emotionally ... um ... overwhelmed by the material that they lost control and hurt themselves.”

Evans, Slate separated Chris Evans, the 36-year-old actor – who is best known for playing Captain America in the Marvel superhero movies – and Jenny Slate the American comedian have quietly ended their onagain, off-again relationship. The news has been revealed in a profile piece about Chris in the New York Times newspaper, which says that their relationship recently ended”. In spite of their turbulent romance, Jenny has always been keen to praise Chris in public. But the 35-year-old beauty admitted that, ultimately, Chris’ level of fame and success played a role in their love troubles.

The hard yards are over, now it’s time to row for some bling. Ashburton College rowers heading into today’s final day of racing on Lake Ruataniwha near Twizel in a strong position to push for some serious medals across the day after strong results in semi-finals yesterday. Four crews were impressive winners of the semi-finals – most looking like they still had plenty up their sleeve as they charged to the line too, while those who snuck through into the finals didn’t push them-

selves over the final stages with a spot already guaranteed with a top four finish. Ashburton’s golden girl, Veronica Wall will be looking to continue her domination of Maadi Cup single sculls when she starts a hot favourite in the under-18 girls’ event. Wall has been without peer in recent years at this competition and is in line to break the record for the number of gold medals achieved by a single rower at Maadi Cup should she complete the process today. Wall will be rowing in three finals across the day’s programme, including the girls’ under-18 double sculls which she was vic-

torious last year with Grace Wilson. Today she teams up with her own heir apparent, Mollie Gibson, with the pair untouched throughout the heats and semifinals and also favoured to pick up a gold medal. The pair will then combine with Lara Biggs, Emma Stagg and Harriet Leverton in the girls’ under-18 coxed quad sculls final – again off the back of a strong run through the heats and semis. Gibson also tackles the girls’ under-17 single sculls final after finishing a comfortable second in her semi-final yesterday afternoon.

The young talent sat up inside the final stages of the race and coasted to the line – producing similar results to what she did last year on her way to win the under-16 title. In the boys’ under-18 single sculls, Haxby Hefford will start in the A Final after finishing third in a close finish in his heat while Harrison Davies will head to the B Final after he finished fifth in his heat – narrowly missing a finals berth. The under-17 coxed quad sculls, consisting of Emma Stagg, Mollie Gibson, Aidan Elvines and Lara Biggs with Harriet Leverton the cox, are into today’s A Final.

■ CRICKET

Kane creates history BY ANDREW ALDERSON With a cut through gully for a single, Kane Williamson yesterday became the leading centurymaker in New Zealand test cricket at Eden Park. The ball was bobbled and nonstriker Henry Nicholls called him through to history. He was congratulated by Nicholls, before removing his helmet and offering a stoic raise of the bat to an applauding crowd. The New Zealand captain began the second afternoon nine runs short of breaking the deadlock between himself, Ross Taylor and the late Martin Crowe as the first Kiwi cricketer to reach 18 test tons. He straight drove Stuart Broad for four to re-open his account in overcast conditions, then made his next four runs from

three scoring shots between midwicket and square leg before he grasped the moment. Crowe made his last test century, 115, on July 5, 1994 against England at Old Trafford. However, he has held – and shared since Williamson and Taylor’s feats – the national record since he made his eighth ton against Australia at Adelaide on December 12, 1987, passing Glenn Turner and Bevan Congdon. Twenty years, three months and 11 days later we have seen a changing of the guard. Williamson’s milestone is the next step in a test career that began as the eighth New Zealander to make a hundred on debut with 131 on November 7, 2010 against India in Ahmedabad. He has brought metronomic consistency since, with centuries

against every country that has played the longest format. Ahead of the 2015 World Cup, Crowe was asked about Williamson’s development. “We’re seeing the dawn of probably our greatest ever batsman.” He chose Williamson over a field of candidates which includes himself, protégé Taylor, Turner and Bert Sutcliffe. Williamson reached the record century mark in 114 innings across 64 tests; Crowe took 131 innings across 77. Not that the milestone will matter a jot to the New Zealand captain. If pedigree is a judge, he will be more concerned in enforcing his side’s dominance over England after the visitors were routed for 58 in Thursday’s opening session of the first test. The hosts were 197 for three in reply when tea was taken after

rain stopped play, after starting the day at 175. Williamson’s batting, alongside Tom Latham’s stoic 26 off 112 balls, Taylor’s 20 and Henry Nicholls’ 36 not out took an axeman’s grip on the country’s maiden day-night test. The rain was bucketing down on Eden Park late yesterday afternoon as New Zealand sat on 2294, 171 runs ahead of England. The forecast is similarly poor for today and Sunday. Fortunately for Kiwi captain Williamson, he had enough time during the patches of cricket to secure his record-breaking ton. He was duly snared lbw by James Anderson for 102. Henry Nicholls, who dutifully anchored for Williamson, remained at the crease with 49 from 143 deliveries, while BJ Watling was on 17 from 20 balls. - NZME

Time trial honours for Bond in Oceania champs Multi Olympic and world rowing champion Hamish Bond has claimed elite time trial honours on the opening day of the Oceania road cycling championships in Tasmania. Bond, who moved to cycling last year, produced a confidenceboosting performance to claim the 41km test against time three

weeks out from his cycling introduction to the Commonwealth Games. The Waikato rider clocked 51 minutes 03.44 seconds in Evansdale near Launceston to beat two-time defending champion Sean Lake (Australia) by 32 seconds. It proved an excellent day

for New Zealand riders, with Christchurch’s Jake Marryatt winning the men’s under-23 honours, while Mikayla Harvey (Central Otago) won the women’s under-23 crown. Commonwealth Games-bound Sharlotte Lucas (Canterbury) took out third place in the elite women event.

The competition didn’t include many professional riders, with all the leading World Tour and procontinental riders from down under riding in pro races around the world. However, Bond said the win was an encouraging stepping stone leading into the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. - NZME

Triangular tournament The Midlands Triangular, being held this weekend in Geraldine, is a squash tournament contested annually between Midlands, Otago and Central Otago. The Midlands team is made up of 10 players, a male and female of each grade B, C, D, E and F. Ashburton representatives in the Midlands team are Lee Barker (Ashburton, men’s B), Rachel Hart (Rakaia, ladies E) and Charlotte Smith (Ashburton Celtic, ladies E2/F).

Horan wins para silver Accomplished Kiwi Kate Horan has provided lustre to the start of the para cycling track world championships in Rio by winning silver. Two-time Paralympian Horan, 42, finished runner-up in the women’s C4 500m time trial, less than two seconds behind Chinese winner Jianping Ruan. “I was so nervous which really shocked me as I have been around international Para cycling for a while now,” Horan said. “But I think I felt the pressure more than I ever have as I am now a senior member of the team and there are no excuses.” - NZME

Zimbos lose qualifier Zimbabwe have effectively failed to reach the Cricket World Cup for the first time since 1983 after losing a must-win qualification match against the already eliminated United Arab Emirates by three runs. The hosts needed to beat associate side UAE yesterday to be assured of making the tournament in England and Wales in 2019. But the result means new test teams Ireland and Afghanistan will play a virtual knockout match today, with the winner qualifying for the World Cup and playing the West Indies in the qualification final on Sunday. - PA

Newlands pitch ‘like 2011’ Centurion Dean Elgar insists the pitch in Cape Town is no batsman’s paradise, while AB de Villiers says it reminds him of the surface at the same venue on which pure chaos unfolded in 2011. South Africa resumed at 8-266 on day two of the third test, having been in the box seat to post a far more imposing first-innings total at 2-220. Australia are well placed to bat long, but as some members of the current side know all too well, test cricket is a funny beast. Australia rolled the Proteas for 96 at Newlands in 2011, claiming a first-innings lead of 188 runs, then watched in disbelief as they were skittled for 47. - AAP

Surreal day for Boult At one point in England’s stunning capitulation at Eden Park, Trent Boult looked up at the scoreboard. “It said 23 for eight. That was pretty surreal,’’ New Zealand’s bowling spearhead said. Boult and his new ball partner Tim Southee rolled the tourists for 58, their sixth lowest test total ever and worst against New Zealand. Boult’s six for 32 are his test-best figures. He’s had a long summer – and an IPL stint to start next month – but he’s feeling good. “Six-for probably helps loosen you up nicely,’’ he said. ‘’It was just a great day. It was nice to see the ball moving around against a quality side that’s very experienced.’’ - NZME

Methven loses a thriller By Matt MarkhaM

Matt.M@theguardian.co.nz

A last-minute penalty and a 90-metre intercept try inside the final quarter will live on and haunt Methven after a first-round victory in the Combined Country Rugby competition slipped through their grasp on Thursday night in Darfield. The Methven side looked the better of the two teams for much of the encounter, but costly errors at key points of the game and a woundup Darfield forward pack in the final quarter of the game ultimately proved to be their undoing. That, along with the lurking presence of a familiar face in Richard Catherwood. It was the former Methven and Mid Canterbury player who broke the hearts of his former team when he threw his hands up to a Davey Maw wide ball and found himself in open space before running the 90-odd metres to score under the posts at the opposite end of the paddock. At that stage, Methven were in control. They’d been up 21-6 and looking strong at half-time, but a Darfield try then the Catherwood

Ashburton Guardian 17

dash put them under the pump. A further Darfield penalty – of which there were plenty during the 80 minutes, took the hosts out to a 23-21 lead with seven minutes to play but when Davey Maw slotted a 45-metre penalty on the 78-minute mark, Methven looked set to pull off the victory. A late penalty, right on full-time to Darfield proved a bridge too far for the Methven lads though and they watched the ball sail between the uprights as the final hooter sounded with the final score 24-26. While beaten, Methven will have taken plenty of positives out of the match. Their mid-field attack worked strongly while the forward pack was strong in the opening half of the match. Winger Hugh Griffiths had a strong game – scoring two tries, using his speed for both while Tyler Blackburn and Davey Maw have continued their strong combination. Methven gain a point out of the match for finishing within seven of their rivals, but they’ll be rueing the lost opportunity for three more points for the victory.

Conrad Smith is eyeing up an advocate role for players when he retires from rugby in May. Smith confirmed he will hang up the boots for good after seeing out the French season. The 36-year-old centre was among a hardened core of All Blacks to retire from the international game after clinching the 2015 World Cup – the second global trophy triumph for Smith. - NZME

Highlanders steel for Hurricanes’ challenge Another stern challenge awaits the Highlanders tonight as they venture away from their Forsyth Barr Stadium fortress for the first time this Super Rugby season. Unbeaten after three matches, and coming off a 25-17 victory over the Crusaders last week, the southerners head to Wellington to take on the Hurricanes. The Highlanders and Hurricanes sit first and second respectively in the New Zealand conference, both having enjoyed wins over the defending champion Crusaders in the early rounds. Nonetheless, coach Aaron Mauger says the Highlanders have plenty of room for improvement this weekend. “I thought we got given a couple of gifts last week from the Crusaders around some of the areas we didn’t nail, and they really attacked us,” he said. “I don’t want to give too much away because it’s been a really key focus for this week, and I’d be telling John Plumtree and Chris Boyd how to do their job, so we’ll just leave them to figure it out on Saturday night”. Weaknesses in the Hurricanes game are few and far between with three worldclass playmakers in their ranks in All Blacks TJ Perenara, and Beauden and Jordie Barrett. “There’s not too many chinks in their armour, but we’ve come up with some strategies through the week to try and expose them where we think we can, and look forward to testing them out on Saturday night,” Mauger said. Elliott Dixon replaces the injured Liam Squire on the blindside flank in one of three changes to last week’s run-on team, the others coming in the front row where

Club rugby Hampstead Coach: Shaun Bovey and Craig Dwyer – Captain: Peter Milo

The Hampstead boys are feeling the positives.

A new outlook, a new focus and most important of all – a new team culture. Shaun Bovey’s under no illusions that Hampstead are going to step out this season and win the Combined Country Rugby competition, but any form of progress will be a great result and he’s sure that his band of men might just cause an upset or two along the way. After battling in recent seasons, Bovey, who, along with Craig Dwyer, has taken over at the helm of the side said things are looking good. “They’re focused and all of a sudden we have this huge amount of culture within the group,” Bovey said. “There is excitement to get out on the paddock and play some rugby and

everyone is feeling really positive.” While 2018 might be more about rebuilding, Bovey and Dwyer have had the advantage of looking at the team through fresh eyes as new coaches with little or no knowledge of abilities. That’s meant they’ve selected on application and effort. “It’s the guys who turn up and do the hard yards who are going to be rewarded with game time.” The side has lost some of its big names from recent seasons, but there’s some strong core players within the group who will be looked at to drive the team when the motivation is required. Peter Milo has taken over the captaincy role for the side with the talented Romeo Touli his deputy. As always the Hampstead backline is brimming with skill and talent and when allowed to create opportunities,

Bovey is sure they will take them. He gained encouragement in a recent pre-season match with Timaru Old Boys in which the blue and golds came from 10-nil down to draw level before conceding a late try which would have normally spelt the end of things. But they gathered themselves and answered with a good late try to leave things locked at 15-all. “In the past I gather that the heads would have gone down, so it was great to see them lift back up and get that try to level it.” Hampstead have a tough opening run of matches with Lincoln at home today then games against Celtic and Southbridge, but Bovey said they were looking forward to starting with a clean slate and sinking the teeth into it.

Southern Coach: Andrew Carr, Jason Gill and Geoff Frew – Captain: Eric Duff There’s a Watters Cup sitting in the trophy cabinet to underline a strong 2017, but a complete showing in the first half of the season will be a key goal for the Southern lads when they take to the paddock this season in the combined competition. With a new coaching panel of Andrew Carr, Jason Gill and Geoff Frew – there’ll be some expectation of good results early doors from the side as they build once again to defending the Watters Cup.

Retaining a good basis of players from last season and adding in a few new faces has helped the process for the new coaching panel and they’re ready to launch this afternoon. “We struggled for numbers a bit until harvest was finished, but the last few weeks have been really good,” Gill said. “We’ve had a few good solid hit-outs too, including a trip down south to play Taieri last weekend before heading to the Crusaders and Highlanders match. “That was a good hit-out and a good chance to see how we might stack up this year.”

With a similar squad, rugby enthusiasts will see plenty of familiar faces in the Southern jersey again this year including the seemingly ageless Jon Dampney who is back for another season. Eric Duff will captain the side again too, adding more valuable experience to the usually strong forward pack. Southern begin their campaign today with a home game against Oxford which Gill said is going to be no easy task first up. “They’re a good side who usually finish high up the table so we’ll have to be on our game.” Jon Dampney will be going round for Southern again.

The Combined Country Rugby competition, featuring teams from North Canterbury, Ellesmere and Mid Canterbury officially kicks into full swing today after Methven and Darfield battled it out on Thursday night. Matt Markham looks through the five teams from our neck of the woods ahead of the popular competition.

Rakaia Coach: Wayne Foxcroft - Captain: Jackson Donlan

Jackson Donlan will again be leading from the front.

Wayne Foxcroft isn’t one who steps backwards when he’s going forward, so when he says that this season’s Rakaia squad features some of the best talent and best combinations the club has ever seen, then you need to take him seriously. This year Foxcroft has sole control of the side who finished runner-up last season with his offsider, Sean Carter, elevated to the role of Mid Canterbury’s Heartland coach. So, his role for 2018 is more intense than it’s ever been, but he’s resting easy on the fact that what he’s seen in trainings and Rakaia’s sole pre-season match against Temuka has his side ready for redemption. “It’s exciting, we’re ticking along pretty well,” he said. “The general nucleus of the squad is there from last year, but we’ve picked up a few new faces along the way too. “There’s a couple of guys down from Auckland

and few who have come up from South Canterbury who just give us some stronger options.” Foxcroft has the undoubted luxury of a backline which just streams with talent with Tom Hanham-Carter, who’s been a frequent player for the Crusader Knights side in recent weeks, slotting into the No.10 jersey. He’ll play inside powerhouse mid-fielder Nete Caucau while the experienced shoulders of guys like Andrew Letham will provide balance from either centre or fullback. “It’s a pretty slick backline, there is some great talent there, so we’re excited to see what they can do.” Jackson Donlan will retain the captaincy role after making big strides last year in the role, as well as leading the Mid Canterbury Heartland side. Rakaia begin their season this afternoon with a trip just up the road to take on last season’s cellardwellers, Rolleston – a match which they would be disappointed to not walk away with maximum points from.

Methven Coach: Andy Pearce - Captain: James McLeod Transition is no longer a word in the vocabulary of Methven coach, Andy Pearce. It’s a path they’ve been down for the past couple of years as they blooded new players, but now Pearce is ready to unleash the beast. With a strong squad, mixed with some handy off-season acquisitions, some new faces and a few old hands the goal for Methven this season is to be more competitive than they have been in recent years. A lot of that will sit on the shoulders of their core leadership group of James McLeod, Tyler Blackburn and Davey Maw – but there’s enough raw talent in amongst the mix to carry the side too. “It’s a good squad – we’ve got depth too which is fantastic,” Pearce said. “We have been in this holding pattern for a cou-

ple of seasons, but I feel like now we are ready to do better and to be better than we have been.” Pearce has high hopes for a big season from former Finnish national, Kalle Vallemaki, whose big frame and powerful work in the scrums alongside Matt Groom will make the Methven front row a force to be reckoned with. Maw’s experience and skill will also be a key asset. His ability to read a game and utilising a tactical kicking approach with a forward pack which is going forward is a big tick in the right box. “I hope we will surprise a few teams this year with how well we stack up.” Things didn’t start quite as well as they initially looked like they would for the Methven lads who were buried by an 80th minute penalty in their match with Darfield on Thursday night, losing 24-26. A full match report can be found on Page 17.

Davey Maw is part of a powerful leadership group at Methven.

Celtic Coach: Shane Enright – Co-Captains: Danny Hurley, Hamish Finnie, Nathan McCloy

Celtic will expect to pick up many points from Nathan McCloy’s prolific boot.

Shane Enright’s had one of those off-seasons that coaches dread. After a promising 2017 campaign, the Celtic side looked set to step up in 2018 and push their case even more seriously than before, but a huge player drain during the off months has seen Enright and his coaching panel almost starting from scratch in some areas. Of the main squad of 22 last season, 12 are not returning to the fold for a whole variety of reasons. “It hurts us a lot, but there’s not much we can do about it,” Enright said. “We’ve lost them for all sorts of different things too, some have moved away others have season ending injuries, but it is what it is.” The side does welcome back influential leader Danny Hurley, who spent most of last season on the sideline injured. He, along with Kirk Chettleburgh, Nick

McCain, Matt Miller and Hamish Finnie will be charged with leading a relatively newlook forward pack. Celtic have managed a couple of key signings during the off-season, with both Brian Matorausha and Shepherd Mhembere joining the team. “They are both very good players and already I think they have improved their games.” Nathan McCloy will carry the task of guiding the backline through their paces and building on his good form of last season. Celtic begin their season today when they host Ohoka. They’ve faced them early in the season for the past two years and while recording wins in both those fixtures, Enright’s conscious of their steady improvement. “I went and watched a bit of them last week, they’ve come a long way and will be a good side this year, I think.” Points on the board will be the key for the Celtic side in their opener, but not just on the scoreboard with points on the standings table a critical as well.

In brief

■ WAIMATE

Classy mare back on track Delightful Dash makes an unlikely return to racing in tomorrow’s Waimate Cup after last being sighted in New Zealand in December, 2016. The seven-year-old daughter of Lis Mara has won 11 races and $111,000, but she hasn’t won since September of 2015, or twoand-a-half years ago. She spent the latter half of last season racing in Australia, which didn’t go so well, and she missed to Somebeachsomewhere twice this past breeding season. Delightful Dash is now having her fourth stint with Bruce Negus, for whom she has won five times, while she has also been with Cran Dalgety (one win), Tony Barron (five wins) in Southland and Ken and Tony Barron in Canterbury. “She’d reached a tough mark towards the end of her time here and was finding the going a bit

tough, so the plan was to race her at Menangle and get a good time on her and then bring her back for a broodmare career,” said Negus. “I’m not sure what happened in Australia, but she didn’t look as sharp as she could, and she didn’t get in foal although I understand there were all sorts of problems there (with Somebeachsomewhere). “So, the owners decided to put her back into work and have one more go.” Bred by Syd Brown from the family of Foreal and Field Marshal, Delightful Dash is owned by South Australia’s David Shammall and Dunedin’s Barry Barber, who had Quick As A Trick with Negus and who also won a Wellington Cup at Trentham with Cluden Creek. Delightful Dash raced 11 times in Australia and her best perfor-

pects she will need the outing. “She’s a great big mare that takes a 68-inch hopple and I’d expect her to need some racing to get back to her best, having been away so long. “For all we know her best days could be behind her, but we’ll find that out soon enough I guess.” While Negus is not overly confident about the prospects of Delightful Dash, he does have some with his other seven-year-old mare Highland Reign, who will again be driven by wife Colleen in the race for amateur drivers. Highland Reign was trapped three-wide for the first 1000m in the same event at Motukarara last Sunday and was only just beaten by Maninthemirror. She has drawn the second line in the first race on Sunday and “she should get a better trip from there”. - NZHN

Bruce Negus mance was arguably a close third at Menangle for John McCarthy, in a race run in 1.53.3. She was later campaigned in Queensland by trainer Vicki Rasmussen, but the best she could manage there was a third at Albion Park last April. Delightful Dash has had just the one workout lately at Methven last Saturday and Negus ex-

Aussie jaunt beckoning for Excelleration Excelleration has made the most of her southern campaign and she may be in line to travel even further afield. She was prepared at Pukekohe by Nigel Tiley to win the Listed Gore Guineas (1335) and the daughter of Exceed And Excel

Downs South Island Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m) will bring a trip to Australia a step closer. “If she runs well on Saturday we would look at a hit and run mission to Sydney,” co-breeder and part-owner Bill Gleeson, of

Wellfield Lodge, said. “It’s all performance-based and against the older mares we’ll get a good line on her.” The race in Sydney under consideration is the Gr.3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on April 7. - NZME

Junior driver Matt Anderson continued his high-flying season by winning his 100th race in New Zealand at Forbury Park on Thursday night. Anderson produced the kind of tactically aggressive drive that has put him at the top of the national junior drivers’ premiership to win with The Doorman. The Brad Williamson-trained pacer surged to the lead with a lap to go in the race before hanging on for a half-length victory. - NZHN

Master Moonlite sold Master Moonlite was scratched from the Vero Flying Stakes at Addington last night following confirmation of a sale to Victorian interests. “It was a bit of a difficult one but it’s the right time for us to sell as he’ll be four in a few months’ time and it’s an opportune time to let him go,” said trainer Cran Dalgety. Master Moonlite has been sold by Ashburton agent Peter Larkin to clients of young Terang trainer Mattie Craven. - NZHN

Nicoletta well suited Cambridge trainer Murray Baker is no fan of set weights and penalties racing but concedes that conditions ideally suit his Group Oneplaced mare Nicoletta in today’s Windsor Park Stud Japan-New Zealand International Trophy at Matamata. The Lib Petagna-raced four-year-old carries just 53.5kg under the race conditions, her halfkilogram penalty coming through her defeat of subsequent Group One winners Devise and Bonneval in last year’s Desert Gold Stakes (1600m) at Trentham. - NZME

In brief High praise for Corvo Warriors hooker Issac Luke has put his 2018 NRL rejuvenation down to the high expectations of fitness guru Alex Corvo. Luke has endured a tough two years since joining the Warriors in 2016, culminating in his omission from the Kiwis’ 2017 World Cup squad. But he has appeared fit and firing in the first two games of the 2018 season, helping his side to comprehensive wins over the Rabbitohs and Titans. “All the boys are looking really good – probably owe that one to Alex Corvo, it’s been a pretty tough preseason,” Luke said. - NZME

Hamilton dictates practice By Laine CLark A bad omen might have appeared for four-time world champion Lewis Hamilton yesterday at the Australian Grand Prix. But rivals Red Bull reckon the 2018 Formula One championship already looms as a one-man show, warning that results will depend on “how fast Lewis wants to go”. Hamilton, 33, sounded his intentions for 2018 by dominating opening practice at Albert Park. The Briton clocked an impressive lap time of one minute, 24.02 seconds on the 5.3km circuit in the 90-minute session, more than half-a-second quicker than Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen third fastest.

Four-time world champ Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari was fifth quickest, with local hope Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull sixth in the 20-strong field. Hamilton showed no sign of slowing down as he looked to equal Argentine great Juan Manuel Fangio’s five world titles. Only Michael Schumacher (seven) has won more. But Mercedes team chief Toto Wolff baulked at talk of Hamilton joining Fangio’s elite club this year ahead of tomorrow’s season-opening Australian Grand Prix. “With four championship titles, he is already in a good group of drivers, but I don’t think it is a good omen to think too much about it (Fangio’s record),” he said.

“It is better to look at those records afterwards.” After impressive testing results, Red Bull this year is expected to join Ferrari and threaten Mercedes, who have claimed fourstraight drivers’ and constructors’ world titles. However, Red Bull chief Christian Horner believed Hamilton was still clearly the benchmark. “It’s a long season. Form will vary from race to race and 21 races is a gruelling calendar, so it will be fascinating to see how teams develop during the year,” he said. “It is the rate of development that will dictate the outcome of performance over the season, but you’d have to say Mercedes look in great shape. “It depends on how fast Lewis wants to go.”

Wolff was confident Britain’s highest-paid sportsperson Hamilton would soon sign a new twoyear deal reportedly worth $73 million a season. “Discussions are going in the right way. We are about to finalise the last topics (of contract),” Wolff said. “He is in a good frame of mind. He has come back strong.” Asked how long Mercedes could stay on top, Wolff said: “I have tried to find a stat of a team in a sport that is winning every year and there isn’t one – at some stage, someone else picks up the ball and runs faster. “We have to be on our toes every year. “We will be running around with a target on our backs and everyone is trying to get us.”- AAP

Mixed fortunes for Triple Eight Supercars By Ben MCkay Shane van Gisbergen looks set to relinquish his Supercars championship lead after a series of qualifying struggles at the Australian Grand Prix. The Kiwi flyer won a pair of poles and race victories at the season-opening Adelaide meet but hasn’t threatened in qualifying at Albert Park. He backed up fifth and seventh-placed finishes in qualifying on Thursday with 17th and 26th – last place – yesterday.

Despite holding his own against one of his boyhood heroes, Brodie Croft is still very much a work in progress, Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy says. The 20-year-old rookie halfback helped the Storm to a 30-14 win in their grand final rematch over North Queensland on Thursday, led by superstar Johnathan Thurston. Croft, who replaced Cooper Cronk this season following Cronk’s departure to the Sydney Roosters, paired with 23-year-old Cameron Munster to go head-to-head with Thurston and test five-eighth Michael Morgan. - AAP

The 2016 series champion failed to set a time around the Melbourne street circuit in the final session. He will start tomorrow’s final race from the last row. Van Gisbergen’s struggles contrasted sharply with team-mate Jamie Whincup, who won two of the four poles available. Triple Eight manager Mark Dutton said his team would be working overtime to deliver the No.97 car a better balance. “We still haven’t quite put our finger on that one little thing in Shane’s car that’s triggering off

the chain reaction,” he said. “You can’t finesse it when you’re waiting for it to bite you. “But we’ve got some ideas.” Van Gisbergen hasn’t begun a Supercars race from last place in the field for three years. Scott McLaughlin, who smashed the pole position record in 2017, grabbed the other two poles available and looks set to be Whincup’s sternest test for maximum points – and the Larry Perkins Trophy – from the meet. The Supercars are racing for points for the first time in 22 pre-

vious visits to the Grand Prix. Holden drivers enjoyed better fortunes yesterday in qualifying, with Scott Pye the biggest improver after charting 2nd and 5th-placed results. In the demanding qualifying format, with 10-minute sessions that allow drivers just one chance at a flying lap, other drivers fell by the wayside. James Courtney will start 25th in Sunday’s race. Fallen Ford champion Mark Winterbottom’s best qualifying result was 10th. - NZME

Ryan James expects the return of Queensland Origin prop Jarrod Wallace will allow him to run amok on the edge against St George Illawarra. The Gold Coast captain is happy to have Wallace back from a three-game suspension as the NRL side looks for ways to plug their own centre-field defence and stop the unbeaten Dragons tomorrow. James played in the front row last season and, while he will still do stints in the middle, is likely to see more time in the second row with Wallace’s return. - AAP

Gallen ‘certain starter’ Cronulla captain Paul Gallen is certain to take the field for the pivotal clash against Parramatta, coach Shane Flanagan has confirmed. Gallen had been in doubt with a foot injury that kept him from training earlier in the week but Flanagan said his key player trained strongly yesterday. “When you’re getting a bit older, sometimes you don’t train at the start of the week. He trained well today, trained as Gal does on the captain’s run and he’ll be there tomorrow,” Flanagan said. - AAP

Carney ready to return Todd Carney has ticked all the boxes and deserves another chance to play in the NRL, according to Canberra captain Jarrod Croker. Carney was a groomsman at Croker’s wedding last year and the pair have a longstanding friendship having grown up together in the NSW town of Goulburn. The 2010 Dally M winner met with representatives of the NRL’s integrity unit this week in a bid to have his contract with North Queensland registered. Croker says he has seen firsthand the work Carney has put in to turn his life around and earn a contract at a fourth NRL club. The NRL has asked Carney to provide documentation of his rehabilitation. - AAP

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You know better than to force your own thinking. It just doesn’t work like that. Your mind will solve problems while you’re busy doing something else. Amazing! TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Water under the bridge can still flood the bridge. It will take effort to leave the past behind. You could use a metaphorical hot air balloon or... then dream yourself into it and rise above. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): This chapter in your life doesn’t have a title yet, and you shouldn’t worry about finding one for it right now. Let the narrative roll out. Let the relationships go undefined for a little while longer. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): A lot will depend on the company you keep. Meeting interesting people makes you feel like a people person. You will be rejuvenated by excellent conversation, smiles, hugs and laugher. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): There are definitely perks that come with being hard on yourself. You achieve more. You surprise people, including you. You put out fabulous work. Everything within reason, right? VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): When people get what you’re saying without you having to say it obviously, when people laugh at your jokes, when they understand your shorthand – this is love. No wonder it makes you so happy. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): It will be significant to recall how you got here. There’s a part of this journey you’ll want to repeat, and there’s a part you’ll never want to. Go back to the beginning. Do you remember how this started? SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You’ll have to determine something a little difficult today: Is temptation to be resisted or a signal to get what you need? Are your cravings a gift from heaven or an enticement toward a lesser version of yourself? SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Pain leaves scars, and happiness doesn’t. That’s why it’s harder to remember! But don’t let it slip away. Make the effort to capture something of it – a picture, a souvenir, a keepsake for your heart. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): The team is the theme. There will be great satisfaction in providing what the other lacks and accepting the contribution you need. Together you’ll fix it. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): When you’re not represented by stories around you, it can be alienating. But you’re not an outsider. This is where you belong. And there are more who think like you. This is why you must tell your story. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Your appreciation will matter even if it doesn’t seem to. For instance, stopping to appreciate a high-flying bird will make a difference – maybe a mystical difference, but it still counts. Don’t assume that every score is added in this realm.
