Thousands of dollars’ worth of property has been stolen from Mid Canterbury coastal farms this week. A farm on Ocean View Road in the Lowcliffe district was hit twice, the first time overnight on Monday, police reported. Various buildings on the property were broken into and items including water sports equipment, chainsaws, keys, farm equipment and tools were stolen. “Police began making enquiries into the burglary but at approximately

12:50pm on March 21, police received a report from the victim that a second burglary had taken place,” a spokesperson said. This time saddles, bridles, riding clothing and boots were included in the haul. On Tuesday police were also notified of the theft of a farm bike from a property on Islesworth Road, which took place between 2-3pm on the same day. A rural security specialist Hartley Curd said it was not uncommon for thieves to strike again at the same property, particularly if they had noticed items of interest during the first heist.

In other instances the offenders waited until the stolen property had been replaced before returning for a second raid. Curd said there had been an upsurge in the demand for on-farm security cameras, driven by rising rates of rural crime. Stock theft was also on farmers’ radar with several large scale cattle thefts making national news last year.
