A national education crisis is causing problems for Mid Canterbury’s only intermediate school. Ashburton Intermediate School has been unable to find a successful candidate to take up the principal’s position since Gavin Cooper left in September last year. Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president Chris Murphy said the school was suffering a triple whammy with the unpopularity of intermediate schools, principal positions and working in regions.

“There are a number of intermediate schools that have had to go out more than once to attract a principal.” Prospective principal applicants were wary about applying for positions at intermediate schools due to the institutions not being in favour with Education Minister Hekia Parata. There have been concerns in the education world that because of this some may close. There were certainly none that have opened recently, Mr Murphy said. “Nobody wants to be the principal of a school that closes.” Attracting a principal to any school is

also difficult because of the extra workload of the position. Many teachers, when they get to that stage in their career, stay as deputy principals because there is a lot more work that comes with being a principal, he said. “It’s not for all teachers … it’s an extremely difficult job.” Nationally it was also hard to attract people away from cities, with many not wanting to teach in regions, he said.
