Mayors, minister on digital connectivity mission

A group of Canterbury district mayors and Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy visited rural Mid Canterbury yesterday afternoon after the launch of a refreshed Canterbury Regional Economic Development Strategy (CREDS) in Christchurch.

They were at the Methven farm of Craige and Roz Mackenzie to find out more about precision agriculture specialists Agri Optics and how the company helps farmers utilise digital connectivity to help their businesses.

Digital connectivity is one of the seven work programmes that make up the regional development strategy.

Timaru Mayor Damon Odey, who has led the strategy’s digital connectivity work programme over the past two years, says the region needs fast broadband and reliable mobile coverage and rural communities should not be left behind.

The Ashburton and Selwyn district councils’ strategy responsibility was leading the newcomer and migrant support programme that aims to help skilled workers settle in the community.

The refreshed CREDS was launched in Christchurch yesterday by the Canterbury Mayoral Forum, Communications Minister

Simon Bridges and Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy. The original strategy was first developed by the Mayoral Forum in 2015 with a focus on developing the Canterbury economy in preparation for the completion of

the earthquake rebuild of greater Christchurch.

Following the local body elections last year the forum reviewed and refreshed the strategy, including identification of priority actions between 2017 and 2019.

No solutions to stem erosion

There are no solutions to stem widespread erosion which has claimed almost 50 metres of coastline near the Hakatere Huts settlement in the past 52 years, a new report advises.

Recent large coastal storm events caused about three metres off the cliff top to erode in the area at the end of Hakatere Drive in the upper part of the settlement,

forcing the closure of a visitors’ carpark after Queen’s Birthday weekend.

Environment Canterbury’s coastal scientist Justin Cope visited the area on Monday. He has been surveying that part of the coastline for years.

“It is likely that the elevation of the beach barrier crest adjacent to the parts of the cliff that have fallen away was low at the time of the coastal storms, possibly due

to the river mouth recently having cut through the beach at this location,” he said.

This probably allowed waves generated by the storm to swell over the beach and attack the base of the cliff.

Cope said it was not uncommon for large portions of these coastal cliffs to be eroded in a single event and it would be ongoing.

“When and to what extent is unpredictable and depends on the

combination of coastal storm frequency, river flows, the position of the river mouth and beach height and volume,” he said.

“Given the complexity of the environment and the widespread and chronic erosion of the shoreline, any erosion mitigation measures, for example protection structures such as rock revetments (retaining walls) are likely to be extremely expensive, very high in maintenance and at best

only effective in the short term.

“They are also likely to have significant adverse effects on the natural functioning of the river mouth lagoon environment.”

Between 1941 and 2010 the cliff eroded about 45 metres and has continued to claim about 0.7m annually.

Ashburton District Council has been given the report and will consult with the Hakatere Huts residents.

Grant raises Ashburton passenger rail hopes

A $50,000 government grant could be the catalyst that kickstarts a passenger rail service linking Ashburton with Christchurch and Invercargill.

Yesterday tourism minister Paula Bennett said that $50,000 had been tagged for an independent assessment of the business case for reintroducing the rail service. And that, Experience Mid Canterbury chief executive Bruce Moffat said, was a solid indication that there was top level interest in the project.

He’s one of a team led by Timaru Mayor Damon Odey that has been working on the rail revitalisation project, and that cash injection showed the government was listening, Moffat said.

“I’ve been a 100 per cent supporter of looking at rail across the South Island. I was involved in earlier discussions and I’d love to be involved again at this new level.”

An assessment of the business case was the first step in getting the project off the ground, he said.

“The Kaikoura earthquake and then fires in Arthur’s Pass closing rail links would have given Kiwi Rail an opportunity to realise just how valuable the service is. Now is a really great opportunity for us,” Moffat said.

He believes a new rail service would be used by both tourists and locals wanting fast, easy transport up and down the South Island.

“As long as it’s good value and it takes less time than road it’ll be used and it would get vehicles off the road.”

Moffat heads both Mid and South Canterbury’s tourism organisations and said he could see the rail link opening up employment opportunities for people living in Rolleston, Ashburton and Timaru.

The rail investigation fund was announced along with a new $160,000 investment to support tourism strategy projects in Canterbury that is part of a refresh of the Canterbury Regional Economic Development Strategy (CRED).

While there was no detail around how the money would be utilised, the government has said it would help develop a visitor strategy that would help grow a sustainable tourism industry that ensured Canterbury became the gateway to the South Island.

There was an indication this would focus on the high-end visitor market and would encourage a longer seasonal spread of visitors. That tied in perfectly with several initiatives Experience Mid Canterbury had developed utilising the Mid Canterbury high country, Moffat said.

The funds are additional to the $2 million recently awarded for tourism infrastructure projects in Canterbury through the Regional Mid-sized Tourism Facilities Grant Fund.

The Ashburton District received $105,000 for a toilet block at Lake Camp.

The crew at Tiddlywinks Preschool love Pyjama Day, and this year they’ve found a great cause to support while rugged up in sleepwear on a wet, winter day.

Parents were asked to contribute a pair of new pyjamas or a gold coin donation to the Foster Hope charity, which supports youngsters in foster care.

Preschool owner Amanda Moore said the response from the preschool community had been fantastic, with a pile of col-

ourful and cosy pyjamas stacked up and about $60 in the collection bucket yesterday morning.

Foster Hope runs the new pyjama drive each year, aiming to contribute 5000 pairs each time.

While most children take pyjamas for granted many in foster care have never owned a brand new pair – a thought which tugged at the heartstrings of the preschool’s parents.

Could it be that The Opportunities Party (TOP) founder Gareth Morgan has mastered the politician’s art of not answering questions directly?

On his way through Ashburton yesterday he stopped for breakfast around 10am and took time to talk to the Guardian.

The Opportunities Party is sitting at around 1 per cent in mainstream media polls and aiming to get into Parliament with at least 5 per cent of the vote this coming election.

On whether Morgan was confident he could grow support to this level over the next three months, he talked generally without giving a yes or no answer.

When put on the spot, however, he said he didn’t want to say

he was confident, because after all he really did not know.

“That’s just political spin, I don’t do political spin, it’s not up to me, it’s up to the voters,” Morgan explained.

Rather than being guilty of avoiding direct answers, it seems Morgan is not a fan of the media sound-bite.

He said the party was starting from nothing and going up against other parties which had been there for 100 years, and as such he had to be realistic.

“We just had this crazy idea before Christmas to form a political party,” he said of TOP, which he has dedicated himself to ever since and is now touring the country promoting the party’s policies in a relentless schedule.

He was glad he had established TOP, but at the same time woke

up every second day and thought “what the hell am I doing this for?” but any such doubts didn’t last long.

“In the end all we are trying to do is just get whoever the government is just to do something and not just serve up the same old same old, and have the place riddled with inertia and no progress, there is so many cool things to do. Some things are going really well in the economy, some things are crap,” Morgan said.

He was pleased with the levels of engagement at the “gigs” he had staged on the tour to date and in Timaru on Thursday night about 170 people turned up, with over 200 in Dunedin the night before and 100 in Invercargill.

Yesterday he was on his way to Christchurch and from there he will fly home to Wellington for a

short break.

Whatever the result come election time, he would not be disillusioned.

“Because I will have known I have done my best, taken best practice policy out there to the public.

“I have tried to reach as many people physically as I can, what will be will be, I either get my life back in September or, slightly worse than that, I end up in the zoo (Parliament),” he said.

He planned to hold one of his gigs in Ashburton in August and was thinking of hiring the Ashburton Trust Event Centre.

He had held meetings a few times in the past in the town, talking on topics such as economics, investment and his and his wife Jo’s passion of riding around the world on motorbikes.

Barrister branches out

Ashburton barrister Paul Bradford has become the town’s first barrister, solely specialising in criminal, traffic and child care cases.

Bradford, who had been working for Russell Moon and Fail since 2011, will be hanging out his shingle at 123 Burnett Street this week, but his phone is already ringing with clients who have had a brush with the law.

Bradford is one of two Ashburton lawyers taking on legal aid cases which, for him, have ranged from applications for a limited licence to a recent High Court manslaughter trial.

He represents clients mostly in the Ashburton District Court, but also in Timaru and Christchurch, and says criminal convictions – especially for young people – can have massive consequences.

“One moment of idiocy can taint someone’s life forever. Theft is the worst, it is a dishonesty thing and employers look for that. Convictions are pretty big things.”

It is his job to help the court see his client in a fair light, whether it is defending a charge or setting out special circumstances in which a crime was committed.

Bradford says alcohol is the major reason people get into trouble or commit crime.

Criminal law has always been his interest since passing the bar in England in 1995.

He has great interpersonal skills and puts people at ease quickly, employing a little humour sometimes to break the ice: He likes solving problems.

He also enjoys the courtroom arena and the traditions of the legal fraternity appeal to his love of modern history.

In fact he had already departed university in London with a history degree when he decided to return for a one-year law course, which he passed with a commendation.

The UK system differs from New Zealand’s and Bradford then commenced a one year course at the Inns of Court School of Law, (the equivalent of NZ’s Profs),

Shot man remanded A 24-year-old shot in the face by police is a convicted sex offender, it can now be revealed. Murray James Allan pleaded guilty to a variety of charges in the district court yesterday after the incident in Woolston earlier this year. Police fired on Allan after he aimed a blank firing pistol at officers when a patrol went to search the parked vehicle he was in. Records show in January 2013, the then 19-year-old was jailed for three years and two months for having non-consensual sex with a 14-year-old in what was described as “very close to rape”. Allan has been remanded in custody, and will be sentenced for the February incident on August 10.

Teen on murder charge

Barrister Paul Bradford is making his own way in Ashburton’s legal circles. and 15 months later was called to the bar.

All barristers have to join one of four Inns of Court and he joined Lincoln’s Inn based off Chancery Lane.

The inns are steeped in history and tradition, channel Harry Potter, he says.

Freshly minted and qualified, he got a job at Lloyds Bank at 24 and met Kiwi Nina Field, who would become his wife. Field, a veterinarian, brought him back to New Zealand in 2000.

“I had not a clue about the country. I thought there were lots of sheep and, as a footballer, I didn’t really know about the All

Blacks. We landed in Christchurch on a Wednesday night and went out for tea … there was just no-one about. You could have fired a machine gun down the street and not hit anyone.”

The couple travelled extensively and returned to England, where they married; in 2004, with five-month-old Parker, they ventured back to New Zealand to make a family life.

Parker, now 13, and Honor, 11, keep them busy with their sport and the household includes Plum the dog, two cats, two guinea pigs and a recently arrived rescue rabbit.

Bradford, the modern his-

tory buff, says he sometimes misses the oldness of Europe and the ability to wander around the remnants of centuries-old castles. But there are other attractions, like a skifield on your doorstep.

Bradford has kept his passion for football alive by joining Mid Canterbury Football’s masters team and he is president of the club, which has teams from 12th grade to seniors.

He is also the judicial officer for Mainland Football, which sees him dealing with offences on football pitches throughout the Canterbury, Marlborough and West Coast area.

A teenager has been named as the third person charged over the murder of a badly bashed man found in a Sumner carpark this year. Name suppression for Moses Eli Hurrell, 16, lapsed at the High Court in Christchurch yesterday.

The teenager has been jointly charged with the March murder of Pierclaudio Raviola, along with Cyle Robert Jetson, 20, and 38-year-old Deborah Jean Tihema.

Newsman dies Award-winning producer and legendary newsman Keith Slater has died, aged 68, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. As recently as this year he was still involved with investigative documentaries, but in recent days his health deteriorated. Careers expo deemed a success

Just what to dedicate one’s life to is a huge decision, and it is what Mount Hutt College students gave some thought to this week.

About 200 attended their school’s inaugural Career Pathways Expo, 1pm to 3.30pm on Thursday at the Methven Heritage Centre.

The expo has replaced the previous career evenings held by the school.

Careers assistant Shannon Reeve said making the expo compulsory and in the day time made sure that everyone who needed to attend was there.

She said deciding on a career path can be stressful for secondary students.

“Not just where you want to study, but what you want to study, and more so they are aware of the cost of it now,” Reeve said.

As well as students, parents and caregivers turned out for the expo.

Fourteen providers were represented, including universities, polytechs, ITOs and gap year providers.

Mockford re-elected Gordon Mockford has been re-elected as chairman of the Ashburton Citizens’ Association at its annual meeting this week.

While it is not actively involved in any community issues at the moment, Mockford said the organisation remained a strong voice for the community and was ready to swing into action when required. The association was formed as a community watchdog in 2011 and for several years was a strong voice on community issues. Its last major project was fighting the sale of land in the Ashburton Business Estate to a water bottling company.

There has been a changing of the guard around the board table of the Community Trust of Mid and South Canterbury. After four years as a trustee Ashburton man Rex Whiting will step down and he will be replaced by fellow Ashburtonian Alister Wing.

A second trustee Raeleen de Joux will also retire and will be replaced by Lisa Stevenson from Temuka. In its latest round of donations, the trust gave more than $560,000 to 29 community groups and 67 schools. More than $200,000 of this came into the Ashburton District.

‘Well done to all concerned’ Excitement buzzed in the air as the children arrived on stage for the final night of the Music Festival 2017.

Maria Lawn and Caendal Harris began the night with a clearly spoken introduction and an invitation for Andrew Wilson from Heartland Bank to speak to the audience.

Quick quiz participant Dion, from Tinwald School, gave an entertaining start to the festival.

All Massed Choir items throughout the night had clear diction, great dynamics and were sung with enthusiasm. It can be a challenge to get so many children to sing as one, well done to Anna Lischner, Melanie Sloan and Kerrin Lester in achieving this. The inclusion of Ruairidh Maclean on the bagpipes was an added bonus for the audience.

Individual schools presented two songs each and all were well received by the audience.

Longbeach School songs had catchy backing tracks and the students sang with crisp diction.

Hinds School had worked hard on their pieces, with some echo parts, which added colour to their songs.

Tinwald School presented wellrehearsed songs with great dynamics and the added difference of being accompanied by the guitar. The singing was tuneful and the children enthusiastic.

Hampstead School had great contrasting songs which they performed confidently and effectively. The choice of songs was great and the singing tuneful.

Ashburton Intermediate Choir B sang songs with clear diction.

The students enjoyed their Chattanooga Choo Choo actions.

Elaine Vallender conducted the Representative Choir. The soloists, Casey Higson and Rebecca Brown, did a great job and were ably backed by subtle background singing of the choir. The students handled the part singing well and the choir was a pleasure to listen to.

Rock band Warheights from Ashburton College added another dimension to the entertainment and was enjoyed by all.

It is great to see so many students having the opportunity to perform. Well done to all concerned. It was a very enjoyable night’s entertainment.

hen Gwenda Ireland and Daphne Early wheel the tea trolley around Ashburton Hospital’s Ward Six, they’re dispensing much more than cups of tea.

For 29 years the pair have brightened patients’ Wednesday mornings as they pour tea, chat, joke and for some, provide their only visitors of the day.

It’s a job they love and they take pride in being two of the 50 plus members of the Friends of Ashburton Hospital and Tuarangi.

Over the years Gwenda said the hospital had changed and many of the staff had changed, but one thing that has not is the need to spread a little joy on the hospital wards.

“It’s a lovely job and it’s about a lot more than a cup of tea,” she said.

In recent years there have been growing numbers of patients from Christchurch who are undergoing rehabilitation treatment in Ashburton and for them, the ‘tea ladies’ are very welcome visitors.

“They’re always here for a while so we really get to know them,” Gwenda said.

The service has been running for around 40 years and like most of the early volunteers Gwenda and Daphne joined by invitation. That’s the way it was in those days. From day one they’ve worked as a team and from day one they’ve been firm friends.

“It’s a good social thing for us and we get a lot out of doing this, it’s really rewarding. It doesn’t even take two hours out of our day but we hope it makes a difference for people,” Gwenda said.

The hospital friends group does more than dispense tea; members also knit singlets, rugs and booties for newborn babies and these are handed out through the maternity ward.

Gwenda’s volunteering is not limited to the hospital, she’s also been with the Cancer Society for 29 years – on the front desk, providing food, as a driver and as a personal visitor.

The hospital ‘friends’ group also takes on the role of volunteer librarians. Two of those who visit every ward in the hospital each week are Lyn Leadley and Dianne Moss.

They deliver books and magazines to patients but often find people are just happy to spend

time chatting; borrowing a book is secondary.

Lyn’s been on the job for 15 years and Dianne for two, but for both being a volunteer is something they’re passionate about.

When Lyn retired from nursing she decided becoming a volunteer would keep her involved and active in her community. She signed up with the hospital group and also gives her time as a sitter in a patient’s home to allow a carer to take a break.

Volunteering on the wards is a very social event for both patient and volunteer, Lyn said.

Dianne also does double volunteer duty as a hospital volunteer and as a member of a group that makes quilts to donate to Ronald McDonald and Ranui houses in Christchurch.

Group members meet monthly to pool ideas and to collect some of the piles of fabric that are donated.

There is a large group of quilters, Dianne said who all take pleasure in knowing their handiwork will bring pleasure to people who are undergoing medical treatment that means they are often away from home for long periods of time.

20 years of service to his club

t every sports club around the country, there are volunteers who make the club tick.

They do not do the glamorous jobs, but they do the important ones.

For Mid Canterbury Football, that man is Owen Wylie.

What started as a few odd jobs while his son played football for the club, has turned into 20 years of service to the club.

“My son got involved and it just led on from there,” he said.

“I was sort of doing things with Collegiate and then someone asked me cause they needed a hand with a few jobs with the club.”

From ensuring the fields are adequately marked, to performing any maintenance and ensuring the fields are ready for play each weekend, Wylie’s jobs are small, but vital.

When it comes to the why? The answer is simple.

“It is just for the kids really. I just like seeing kids in sports, that’s all, and off the street. It is just a shame there aren’t more doing it, it doesn’t matter what sport, just as long as they are off the street,” he said.

“I’ve never played the game, I just started with my son and kept on going. I enjoy doing what I’m doing and if there is a day I stop enjoying what I’m doing, well that will be the day I stop.”

Volunteers at the Salvation Army enjoyed lunch at the charity’s Family Store on a wet afternoon this week to celebrate Volunteer Week.

Thirty-six men and women of all ages regularly give up their time to help out with the foodbank, sorting and hanging clothing, stocking the shelves and working behind the counter.

Others assist with collecting donated items.

“They do anything and everything,” family store manager Maria Macdonald said.

Trish Moylan loving her role as a volunteer driver for Age Concern.

rish Moylan can’t remember a time when she wasn’t filling the role of volunteer driver.

It started when her children were young and parents were needed to ferry groups of youngsters to sports and cultural events and it’s continued into her retirement.

Today she spends several hours each week driving people around Canterbury, often heading out early morning or returning home very late at night. And she couldn’t be happier.

“I’ve always been happy to take anyone who wanted to be taken anywhere,” she said.

She’s now ‘working’ under the umbrella of Age Concern as a volunteer driver who will ferry people to appointments, airports, on family visits, driving their car and providing companionship and friendship as part of the deal.

For some that makes the impossible, possible, but she’s modest about the time and effort involved.

“For me it’s a change of scenery and I just love driving,” she said.

Most often those trips are about taking people to medical appointments or to hospital and that can mean sharing their fears and concerns and supporting them emotionally, Trish said.

Other times she drives people to the airport

early morning or on family visits they would otherwise be unable to make.

Trish has lost count of the trips she’s made and the years she’s put in behind the wheel.

For her the rewards come in the friendships made and in knowing she’s helped make life a little easier for someone.

“I go the whole journey with people and I’ll sometimes have a little weep with them if things don’t go right for them,” she said.

Her clients can be referred to her by Age Concern and through notices in doctors’ surgeries and Ashburton Hospital. While awareness is growing, she’s concerned there are many people who do not know it’s available. It’s a free service, using the client’s own vehicle.

“It’s for anything that people need a lift to.

I’ll take them in their car and bring the car back and lock it up in their garage if needed.”

Some weeks she’ll make upwards of three trips with clients and often she’ll spend an hour or two waiting while they attend appointments. That’s just part of the job.

Before she heads out Trish spends time checking maps and planning her route to ensure the trip is as problem free as possible for her clients.

While the service is a winner for her clients, the role of volunteer driver is immensely satisfying.

“I just love helping people, just love doing this,” she said.

“I used to work two mornings a week, but now I just work on the counter on Friday afternoons,” she said.

“I’ll keep going as long as I’m able to.”

Cherill Butler is also a familiar face, with 38 years under her volunteering belt. She too plans to keep up the good work.

Community foodbank manager Judith Lilley said the charity would not function without the contribution volunteers made.

Thursday’s lunch was an opportunity to thank them for their efforts, she said.

omething as simple as a coffee machine can turn around people’s lives, as is happening at Christchurch Women’s Prison thanks to Zonta Ashburton.

So far eight inmates at the prison have completed unit standards in barista training on a coffee machine donated by the group.

In honour of National Volunteer Week this week, Minister of Corrections Louise Upston thanked the more than 2000 volunteers nationwide who gave their time to help prisoners and offenders. This included those who taught important skills and, among those getting a personal mention, was barista trainer Vanessa Clements, alongside Zonta Ashburton, which donated the coffee machine Clements teaches students on.

“Volunteers bring diversity, community perspective and connection.

They also support our goal of reducing reoffending by assisting offenders rehabilitate and transition back into the community,” Upston said.

Zonta past president Robin Kilworth was president at the time of the donation, made last year.

She said in researching where to donate funds members made contact with prison management.

“Because we are about empowering women. These are probably

The machine cost about $4000.

Members visited the prison to see the machine in action in November last year and a small group of prisoners made them coffee and told them about what they had learned.

Zonta International focuses on empowering women through service and advocacy.

The Ashburton branch raises funds in a number of ways, including through events such as a quiz and auction last year, making truffles, selling lilies and parking cars at

the Ashburton A&P Show.

Among its services to the community the group hosts an International Women’s Day breakfast at Hotel Ashburton, featuring inspiring guest speakers. This year’s, in March, attracted around 300 women.

Zonta Ashburton president Stephanie Butchard said such projects were thanks not only to the hard work of the approximate 36 members of the club, but also extended family, friends and businesses.

“We find that the community as a whole is very supportive towards us.”

Watters Cup heats up

Once the mud settles on Saturday afternoon, the landscape of this year’s Watters Cup campaign will be much clearer.

Both co-holders will be in action this weekend, in front of home crowds.

Rakaia will host Celtic, while Southern will host strugglers Hampstead.

Rakaia are coming in to the match fresh off the bye, and coming up against an unfamiliar opposition.

“We haven’t played them this

season so it will just be a matter of going out there and doing what we do,” said Rakaia cocoach Wayne Foxcroft.

“We want to get out there and win this trophy after missing out the other week.”

Opponents Celtic will have a shot of confidence after their bonus-point victory last week, but co-coach Shane Enright is keeping things realistic.

“We have got to realise we are playing one of the best teams in the competition,” he said.

Despite thrashing Hampstead last week, Enright wasn’t entirely

pleased with his team’s performance, and said they had been working on defensive communication amongst other things ahead of today’s match.

In today’s other match, Hampstead co-coach Regan Broker is expecting another tough match.

“The boys know what they are up against, they’ll have one of the strongest forward packs in the competition,” he said.

“I suspect a lot of the time it will be trying to stop the onslaught.”

For Southern co-coach Michael Ellis, he is just hoping his side will be a bit sharper out of

the blocks this week after conceding three tries in the first 10 minutes last week.

“Starting better is a pretty key thing. We just want to get stuck in and dominate them early,” he said.

“If there is any wet weather that could make things challenging as it is a good leveller.”

While only wanting to take each match one at a time, Ellis said picking up the full five points today would set the side up for the rest of the campaign.

Methven will sit out this week’s round of fixtures with the bye.

Tyres still an issue Tyre blow-outs remain a talking point in Supercars with problems surfacing at last weekend’s round at Hidden Valley in Darwin.

Defending series champion Shane van Gisbergen suffered a crucial blow-out on Saturday, which sent him to the back of the field. James Moffat also suffered a similar problem on Sunday. The 2017 Dunlop tyre seems to work best with substantial camber applied to the car’s set-up but the risk with that is the tyre taking so much stress it blows.

Bottas’ future uncertain Formula One driver Valtteri Bottas is uncertain about his future with the Mercedes team despite a strong start to the season. Bottas was drafted in on a one-year deal as an emergency replacement for Nico Rosberg after the German retired. Bottas has won one race and is third in the title race, but that does not necessarily guarantee a new contract. “I don’t know when I will know. For sure discussions will be opened soon, because as a driver at some point it’s always nice to know what you are going to do,” Bottas said.

Tension high on the court

On Thursday night, six high-pressure games of netball played out at the EA Networks Centre.

Plenty was on offer for sides to take away from the final matches of round two in the Mid Canterbury Netball premier competition.

Two teams were in the running for top spot in the premier grade, with Ashburton College holding a slender, one-point lead over Celtic.

With the way the draw was set, College had the chance to win the round before Celtic even took to the court, with Ash Coll’s game against United being played at 6.30pm, and Celtic’s

against Southern at 7.30pm.

In what was a very physical match between Ash Coll and United, both sides traded goals in the first quarter, finishing on five each.

United stepped up a level at the beginning of the second, turning the screws on Ash Coll and giving themselves a two-goal buffer.

However in the last two minutes, College were able to rally and end the quarter tied on 14 points.

From the first whistle of the third quarter however, it was all Ash Coll’s match as they piled on the points to lead 24-19.

All that was left was for the College girls to see out the match with a final score of 29-22.

Coach Angela Mitchell said

she was really happy with the performance, and that winning the round really showed how the team had developed and matured over the past few years.

Despite only playing for pride against relegation match confirmed Southern, Celtic showed why they are not a team to be taken lightly. After trading points early in the first-quarter, Celtic put on a three-goal lead in the second quarter, before really hitting their straps in the third, nearly holding Southern out for the entirety of the quarter.

In the end Celtic put on 37 goals, while Southern could only muster 18, and will turn their focus to the promotion/relegation match next Tuesday.

In the lower grades, it was a close battle between three sides for who would face Southern, with Rakaia A, Hampstead B and Celtic B all tied up heading in to Thursday night.

Both Rakaia A and Celtic B played at 6.30pm, with Rakaia romping to 40-11 victory against Southern B, while Celtic B defeated Celtic C 33-24.

Hampstead B were unable to join in the mix at the top of the table, after losing 14-28 to Ashburton College B. With a superior goal ratio of 1.508, it will be Rakaia A who will play Southern for the chance to be promoted to the top grade on Tuesday.

The final round will start next Thursday.

Team New Zealand boss Grant Dalton says the Kiwis are on the edge of sailing “perfection” as the countdown to its America’s Cup destiny approaches this weekend.

Buoyed by a “pretty much errorfree” training day on Bermuda’s Great Sound in 14-knot conditions, Dalton sounded confident about resuming locking horns with Oracle Team USA from tomorrow morning NZ time.

“We just had a really good session,” he said.

“The boat was going really, really well. It was one of the better sails we’ve had frankly, pretty much error-free.

“There is definitely a desire among the guys, and really the whole organisation, to reach perfection as much as is possible in this sport.”

Dalton also revealed he was confident Emirates Team New Zealand knew exactly what Oracle had been up to since racing went on hold for five days after the Kiwis had carved out an impressive 3-0 lead in the first-toseven-wins final.

“We’ve absolutely monitored every step with them,” Dalton said of Oracle’s bid to find speed.

“They’re playing with a few things, a few settings.

“They’ve made alterations to their dagger boards.

“They’re working on the way they’re trying to heel the boat to weather, a bit more like us, they’re adjusting the wing a little more than they were.

“They’ve put in huge hours on the water and had a huge week, and I guess at some point their guys will start getting tired because these are pretty physical boats.

“My guess is they will have a short sharp one tomorrow, as we will, and game time again here on Saturday.”

New contracts Colin de Grandhomme, Jeet Raval and Neil Broom are the new names on New Zealand Cricket’s list of 21 players offered central contracts for the 2017-18 year.

Under the terms of NZC’s Master Agreement with the New Zealand Cricket Players Association, the players have until June 28 to accept or decline the offers.

Of the players centrally contracted during the previous year, off-spinner Mark Craig and pace bowler Doug Bracewell have not received offers to renew, while wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi has announced his retirement from international cricket.

BJ Watling is the only specialist wicketkeeper offered a contract, leaving aspiring candidates such as Tom Blundell, Glenn Phillips and Tim Seifert to develop their claims.

Spin bowler Jeetan Patel, who made himself available for several recent tests and ODIs, including the Champions Trophy, was not considered.

Klopp welcomes Salah London Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says Mohamed Salah’s signing is exciting, as the English Premier League giants strive for Champions League action next season.

Egypt winger Salah left AS Roma yesterday in a deal reportedly worth STG34 million pounds.

The 25-year-old, who scored 15 goals for Roma last season, signed a five-year deal, Liverpool said.

“I will give 100 per cent and give everything for the club. I really want to win something for this club,” Salah told Liverpool’s website.

Klopp said Salah, who will wear the club’s No 11 shirt, will add pace and attacking bite to his side.

“Mohamed has the perfect mix of experience and potential – this is a really

exciting signing for us,” Klopp said. “Most important though, for us, is that he is hungry, willing and eager to be even better and improve further. He believes in what we are trying to do here at Liverpool and is extremely keen to be part of it.”

Salah joined Chelsea in 2014 but played just six matches before being farmed out on loan, eventually joining Roma.

“He knows the Premier League, he has pedigree in the Champions League and he is one of the most important players for his country,” Klopp said.

Salah’s fee matches the figure Liverpool spent bringing Sadio Mane from Southampton last summer and is just short of the club record fee of STG35 million pounds they paid Newcastle for Andy Carroll in 2011.

Time for talking is over

BY GREGOR PAUL No more trash talk said Lions coach Warren Gatland on Thursday.

There’s been enough of it he reckoned and on the eve of the first test, he felt it was time for rugby people everywhere to clear the decks of all the nonsense and simply love the game, the series and the tour.

This was yet a new persona of sorts for him.We have seen since the Lions arrived, Grumpy Gats, Ratty Gats, Happy Gats and maybe this was Hippie Gats, a freewheeling easy loving sort of dude reaching out to Steve Hansen to just like totally mellow.

Watching or sensing the relationship between Hansen ad Gatland fray to the point of breaking has been the sub plot to this Lions tour.

It has made life interesting, added edge, drama and an undeniable sense of theatre that among other things, most starkly illuminates the ferocity of each coach’s desire to be successful in this series.

Gatland is after a careerdefining moment: a landmark achievement that will allow him, regardless of how the remaining years of his career pan out, to enter the Pantheon.

Victory for the Lions will also strengthen their case to survive amid growing concerns their place in the rugby landscape is not as secure as it should be.

Hansen just likes winning, because that’s the expectation that comes with the All Blacks.

Unquestionably if the two men were distantly respectful to one another before the tour, they no longer are.

When the final whistle blows at Eden Park, there won’t be much warmth when the two respective coaches shake hands.

For Hansen, that will be just fine. He hasn’t set out to make an enemy and he no doubt found it curious that Gatland should even think there has been trash talk in the build-up to this series.

To his ears maybe but to everyone else’s All Blacks coach Hansen has been asked over the last few weeks questions about the Lions and answered them.

It has been standard fare. Or at least standard fare as far as Hansen goes.

If he sees a way to help the All Blacks, he’ll take it.

It’s all part of a wider strategy to give his side some kind of advantage come the crunchy part.

He’s twisted many a Wallabies coach into knots over the years, leaving the likes of Robbie Deans, Ewen McKenzie and now Michael Cheika second guessing every decision.

The fact Gatland has interpreted much of Hansen’s commentary as some kind of orchestrated personal attack, alludes not so much to a surprisingly thin skin, but to a much more potentially damaging frailty.

Every time Hansen has been asked about the Lions, he’s brought up the style in which he thinks they will play.

Why? Because Gatland takes it personally, reacts to it and seems to be rattled by the suggestion he has a particular coaching style known to one and all as ‘Warrenball’.

And if Gatland is rattled it is good for the All Blacks.

If Gatland is caught swearing under his breath as he was earlier in the tour, then that, too, is good for the All Blacks.

“I didn’t have any conversations about Gats,” said Hansen when he was asked if he was concerned that the build-up to this series had been marred by the perception of bad blood.

“I have just answered the questions you blokes have asked me.

It would be a really boring old press conference if I sat here and said nothing.

“Warren Gatland is a good coach.

“He’s got his own style and he’s selected a really good team and we have to go out and earn their respect as they have ours ... which is why it is called a test match.”

Gatland has understandably felt a little on the back foot since the Lions arrived. Their opening two games were poor, but when the Maori were despatched in Rotorua and the Lions had two good Saturday performances behind them, Gatland was in a better place to be more challenging of the All Blacks and Hansen.

And he obviously felt he needed to say something. To stand up for himself and have a crack back.

“I was surprised a little bit in terms of Steve Hansen,” Gatland said. “Normally he’s pretty calm but he’s been doing a lot of press conferences in the last couple of weeks. I can only take that as a sign of respect that he’s potentially a little bit worried.”

Of course Hansen just laughed that off, revealing his emotional state as: “Pretty cool, calm and excited. You guys who know me will know that I tell you all the time that worry is a waste of emotion.

“It is a wasted emotion because if the thing you are worried about has happened you need to fix it and there is no point in worrying about it.

“If it hasn’t happened then get a plan so you don’t have to worry about. It’s good feedback from Warren. I appreciate it.”

Trash talk or just talk, the distinction no longer matters.

Which one of them has analysed most deeply, stategised most effectively and come up with the best plan?

Hansen and co well prepared for Lions’ tricks D efinition of rush defence: You wait on (or a bit over if the ref isn’t looking) the offside line, and when the opposition gets the ball you run at them very quickly and stop them from doing anything.

Wow, that’s some devilishly radical tactics right there; apparently it’s only just been discovered by Warren Gatland, and it’s the super-secret weapon that he will use to defuse the might of the All Blacks’ attacking skills tonight, and over the next few weeks.

Couple of things about that.

First, of course there’s nothing remotely new about it, every team strives to do exactly that, but Gatland has honed his team’s skills in that regard to an exceptionally high-level art form, which has served them very well thus far.

Secondly, Steve Hansen has in his possession a whole lot of video time to pore over, and

undoubtedly there will be some new tricks out there to negate what is an extremely menacing part of the Lions’ arsenal.

History will be cruel to the Crusaders when folks revisit this Lions tour in 20 or 40 years time.

The team they faced bore zero resemblance to the outfit that ran out against the Barbarians, who with an ounce of luck could have caused a major upset, or the Blues.

The Lions were still very much in the process of sorting out their second-stringers, and it was a test-strength unit that ran out on to AMI Stadium a couple of weeks ago.

While the Crusaders’ forwards competed, and sometimes dominated, the backs department hit a serious case of culture shock.

Bryn Hall, Richie Mo-unga, George Bridge, David Havili and Jack Goodhue, who all season had been on top of their games in Super rugby, all suddenly

found out what test rugby was all about.

In Super rugby they could try 10 things in a game, and three or four would come off, enough to win every game so far.

Against the Lions, everything they tried was shut down, and shoved right back at them with interest.

Hopefully they will all learn plenty from that experience; a couple of them may indeed find themselves in the test arena in years to come.

But for the forwards, it was a valuable outing, finding out some of the Lions’ front row’s nasty little sideways soft-shoe shuffle

tricks, and for those of them (and of course it’s just about all) who will be turning out at Eden Park tonight there was 80 minutes worth of valuable lessons right there.

With the addition of Kieran Read, Jerome Kaino and Brodie Retallick, the pack in black will not be taking any backward steps, ever.

And their own ball will be better delivered from rock-solid set pieces, Beauden Barrett will be standing back half a pace more, and unlike both the Maori and the Chiefs who had Ferrari backlines but broken gearboxes, the All Blacks will have that extra split-second to work with, and that will count for plenty.

Hey, the wings might even get the ball!

Bottom line: the All Blacks actually have to win, the fallout from the northern hemisphere media would be simply unbearable if any other result transpired.

Opposing coaches have memories of tours past Steve Hansen was 12 years old when the British and Irish Lions conquered New Zealand in 1971, Warren Gatland, not yet eight.

But the victorious tour – and the indelible legacy of Barry John and company on the Shaky Isles – remains with both Kiwi coaches to this day, as their All Blacks and Lions troops prepare for tonight’s test battle.

The Mosgiel-born Hansen attended his first ever Test match at Carisbrook in June 1971, where the Lions trumped the Kiwis 9-3 in the first of a four-test series they went on to win 2-1 with one draw.

Standing on the fence, he recalled hearing the players’ onfield banter – particularly one exchange between Sandy Carmichael and Colin Meads.

“It was awesome because I was right up by the fence and I overheard Carmichael say to Colin Meads, ‘How do you like that scrummaging, boy?’ Anyway, Meads just said, ‘Yeah not too bad but we’ve just scored a try’,” Hansen said.

“My sense of humour enjoyed that.

“I thought, ‘Wow, these guys actually talk to each other on the park.”

As it turns out, Hansen’s memory is hazy.

Carmichael didn’t play in the first test at Carisbrook, having been beaten to a pulp by Canterbury the week before and Meads’ All Blacks didn’t score a try on that day.

Nevertheless, Hansen’s point remains – Lions tours and the sheer novelty of a touring rugby side linger in the memory.

It’s unclear if Gatland went along to the Lions’ 35-14 win over Waikato in May 1971.

But he was certainly present 22 years later, dotting down for a try as the Mooloo men crushed the tourists 38-10 in Hamilton.

That 1971 tour was Gatland’s first taste of overseas rugby, in a career that has taken him from New Zealand to the British Isles.

“I thought rugby was invented in New Zealand when I was growing up and I thought the All Blacks could never be beaten,” Gatland said.

“It did have an impact on me.”

Hansen has spent parts of this week drilling his troops on the Lions’ history in New Zealand – “the good, the bad and the ugly,” as he phrased it.

Playing the test selection was a once-in-a-career proposition.

“The past is important, it helps shape the future,” Hansen said.

“You look at the (provincial Barbarians) who played in that very first game, from the lesser teams, made up from the nonfranchise teams.

“What a great opportunity.

“They loved it (and) that’ll excite them to go to higher levels.

“That’s what this Lions tour does for our rugby.”

Barrett a freak of nature

BY GREGOR PAUL The Lions felt they lucked out the last time they were here.

They encountered what they thought – what everyone thought – was a once-in-a-generation player in Daniel Carter who just happened to come of age during the 2005 series against the Lions.

They might just be a really unlucky team, cursed even because 12 years on they are walking into a similar storm.

They will meet at Eden Park, a player whom they may have a plan to shut down and a player they genuinely believe can be restrained and reduced in influence, but who most likely can’t.

The Lions are going to face Beauden Barrett for the first time on this tour and while they think they have taken some kind of journey into his head to see what he sees, they haven’t.

There’s no real way to define what Barrett has.

Maybe it’s best to think of him as the ultimate nonconformist.

Somehow he remains an enigma in a world of micro analysis and uber structure.

Teams run into action these days with just about every scenario planned and prepared for, then they come up against Barrett who rewrites all the rules by doing something opponents never imagined was possible.

He’s not a maverick as such.

He doesn’t play outside team protocol or suit himself how he attacks and defends.

That’s not it. That’s not him.

He works within the patterns yet manages a way to execute the unthinkable without it seeming to have been an enormous risk.

That’s what throws defences – they think

they can see what is coming and only realise too late that it wasn’t quite what they expected.

Never was there a better example of his insane unpredictability combining with his natural gifts than the try he scored against Ireland in Dublin last year.

It was direct from first phase ball – Aaron Smith fired the pass from a scrum and Barrett found a way to get on the outside of Conor Murray and score from 45 metres without an Irish hand being laid on him.

How does that happen in modern rugby – a try like that from first phase?

It happened because Barrett has the big five of pace, agility, vision, phenomenal skill and confidence.

There’s more to him than that, though. He is greater than the sum of his collective parts.

He will try what no one else will and nine times out of 10, he pulls it off.

Barrett has a gift to make things happen and break even the tightest defences.

Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd said earlier this

year after Barrett had been magnificent against the Blues that the first-five is going to bring seven to 14 points to every game he plays simply by being himself.

It seemed like a fair value estimate of Barrett, who even at test level seems to either create or score at least one try per game purely on the back of his outrageous ability.

This is the bit the Lions have to reconcile.

They have built a stunningly effective defensive system on this tour.

They have generated incred-

ible linespeed and been quite masterful – the test team at least – at shutting down opponents and squeezing the life out of them.

They are planning to do the same to the All Blacks at Eden Park, yet it feels like they are only kidding themselves a little bit if they think they can contain Barrett for 80 minutes.

He will find a way through their defence, be it from first receiver or from the back field.

Barrett will manufacture some kind of unexpected business that the Lions can’t shut down or if they do, not before it has created another hole somewhere else.

Big games tend to always have defining plays and defining players.

The Lions would love for it to Murray or Owen Farrell, but as good as they are, they are bringing the conventional to this series.

They are phenomenally good conventional skills but conventional nonetheless.

Barrett on the other hand is bringing something entirely different – a skill set that has a conventional theme but utterly unconventional application.

He mentioned on Thursday that he has distinct memories of the last Lions tour to New Zealand.

What he remembered from 2005 was the performance of Carter and maybe there was just a flicker of something behind his eyes as he said it.

Maybe there was a realisation within himself that New Zealand’s next oncein-a-generation first-five could be inspired by him and the role he plays in this Lions series.

Nothing new in Gatland’s selections

BY BRIAN MOORE The composition of the British and Irish Lions side for the first test against New Zealand at Eden Park tonight is being interpreted by some as a bold selection by coach Warren Gatland.

It might have one or two surprises but it signals nothing in terms of a change in tactics by the Lions.

The only realistic way the Lions can hope to beat the All Blacks is by implementing Andy Farrell’s defensive strategy to the letter and taking the few chances they will fashion.

They have the talent but not the time to try and match New Zealand’s ubiquitous attacking style and Farrell’s strategy is central to their efforts because as first an England, and now an Ireland, coach he has worked with 11 out of the starting XV in detail and the rest since the start of the tour.

While the back three of Liam Williams, Elliot Daly and Anthony Watson has footballing ability and can counter-attack, they are being picked just as much for their familiarity with the aerial kicking game and their ability to help the Lions’ exit strategy from their own half.

Given the way in which the Lions intend to try and squeeze the All Blacks and punish any illdiscipline Daly also has the added advantage of having a boot that puts anything in range from about 55 metres. In some ways Gatland has chanced upon this combination as the performances by most of the back three contenders has been uneven at best.

He must wish this trio had performed earlier in the tour so that they were not going into the first test untried as a unit.

The performance of the front five will go a long way to settling the game but not neces-

The set piece is an area the Lions will look to exert pressure on the All Blacks but they will not expect to be able to gain enough penalties and points to win the game. Such pressure will be to try and give the New Zealand backs and back row poorer quality ball than they usually get.

The Lions will try to make them move ball against a defensive line which has been quick throughout the Saturday games on tour.

With the leading defender

shooting out of the line from outside centre, the Lions will try to make attacks turn back inside where a hard-working front five can take care of the tackling.

There will be space outside this curve but floating cut-out passes will have to be very precise not to give interceptions or have the outside runners hit man and ball.

The front five will also have to replicate their defensive performance of the last two weekends.

This isn’t just a question of stopping runners at the point of contact, it also committing the right number of tacklers to be effective and no more.

If both these demands are met it gives the wider defensive strategy much more chance to work if defenders are not retreating and line speed is not compromised.

The Lions’ ambitions will be limited to achieving the right result and their best chance comes in the first test.

Surprise for volunteers Lions series volunteers got the surprise of their life when All Blacks’ players popped in for morning tea.

Luke Romano, Brodie Retallick and Waisake Naholo arrived unannounced at a morning tea at Eden Rugby Club yesterday, to thank Auckland-based volunteers for their hard work during the British and Irish Lions tour.

Retallick, who used to volunteer as a kid at the motorcross track in Christchurch, said volunteers put in a lot of work behind the scenes, to make the games a good experience for everyone. - NZME

Selection shock Rob Horne has admitted he thought his Wallabies days were done before his surprise call-up for tomorrow’s test against Italy at Suncorp Stadium. The 27-year-old wasn’t in coach Michael Cheika’s initial squad for the June window but was a late injury replacement for Samu Kerevi, and will line up at outside centre for his first international appearance in a year.

It will probably be his last, with Horne to move to Northampton next year – making him ineligible for Wallabies selection – and Kerevi expected to come straight back into the midfield against New Zealand on August 19.

Back to the Brumbies Former Brumbies coach Laurie Fisher will re-join the club for the next Super Rugby season as an assistant to Dan McKellar, as the post-Stephen Larkham era begins to take shape. Larkham will leave the ACT-based franchise at the end of the season to take up a full-time assistant role at the Wallabies with forwards coach McKellar already announced as his successor. Fisher, who led the Brumbies between 2005 and 2008 as well as co-coaching the club with Larkham in 2014, finished a stint with Gloucester earlier in the season.

Extraordinary comeback Christian Lealiifano has made a remarkable comeback to rugby, playing for the Brumbies a little more than seven months after a bone marrow transplant to treat leukaemia. The star five-eighth came on just after 50 minutes of the Brumbies’ match against the Asia-Pacific Dragons on Thursday in Singapore. It didn’t take long for Lealiifano to return to the scoresheet as he knocked over five conversions in the franchise’s 61-14 victory. The 29-year-old was diagnosed with cancer in August and had surgery in November.

Big season coming up Ardmore Lodge trainer Joanne Surgenor is eyeing a big season as she heads into her twelfth term as a trainer.

The daughter of jockey John Surgenor credits much of her success in those 12 years to legendary trainer Colin Jillings, who she worked for before taking up her dream job as private trainer for Peter Walker.

“Colin took me under his wing, I still learn a lot from him,” she said.

“When I first started out training he was amazing. He was so helpful with advice and came out to look at my horses for me.

“He’s an amazing teacher, and a really patient guy as well.”

Surgenor has a long association with racing.

She began her career riding track work for Gareth Jackson as a 13-year-old schoolgirl in Christchurch before moving to Auckland to work for Haunui Farm.

She then moved to Japan where she worked for Nasu Training Farm in a diverse role that ultimately led her to travelling with the Japanese equestrian team to the 2000 Sydney Olympics as a groom.

“I rode track work in Japan and was also schooling jumpers and did a little bit of show jumping as well,” she said.

“It was an amazing experience being at the Olympics. It actually gave me a lot of skills. I did a lot of training, it was quite disciplined and we worked hard.”

After the Olympics Surgenor returned home to New Zealand to ride work for Jillings before becoming Walker’s private trainer.

She has enjoyed some great highlights in the job, but none more so than Cross Roads winning the Dunstan Feeds Championship Final.

“He won the Dunstan and six races in a row,” she said. “That was pretty amazing.”

Surgenor believes she has another well above average racehorse on her hands in the five-year-old gelding Fully Funded.

The seven-win son of Fully Fledged was brave when winning at Ruakaka last Saturday after a short lay-off due to injury and track conditions.

“He came out of the race at Ellerslie bouncing. He was very well. I was hoping to go to Te Rapa but he got a stone bruise. Then I was hoping to go back to Ellerslie but the track was way too heavy, so we were tossing up whether to turn him out or not.

“I thought I’d put him in at Ruakaka. He trained on really well and I was pretty confident going up for the race, but I was worried he might be on the fresh side. But he dug deep, he’s a good horse.”

Surgenor is now eyeing loftier targets for the gelding next season with the Railway Stakes on New Year’s Day a possibility.

“He’s been put away now, he loves Ellerslie, so if he can make it into the Railway that would be fantastic,” she said.

First winner for sire A more focused Veuve Clicquot improved on her debut run to open her account at Otaki yesterday and in doing so provided her sire Rock ‘N’ Pop with his first success. The filly had been very green when beaten into third at Trentham earlier this month, but the addition of blinkers saw her safely home for the thick end of the stake in the New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Pearl Series Race.

‘A lot of Kiwis are losing their work ethic’ With demand growing for skilled hospitality workers around the country – one Rotorua restaurant owner believes Kiwis are losing their work ethic.

New data shows a large increase in hospitality job vacancies across the country and Rotorua’s Restaurant Association president agreed there was “definitely a shortage of skilled staff”.

The latest Jobs Online report issued by the Ministry of Business showed vacancies in hospitality and tourism were up 1.6 per cent from April, despite it being a traditionally quiet time of year.

For the past year, the number of tourism and hospitality jobs advertised online has increased by

15.8 per cent, one of the biggest increases of all industries measured.

Sharon Wallace, Rotorua’s Restaurant Association president and Rotorua Hospitality board chairwoman, said she got daily phone calls from people needing more staff.

“There is a real shortage,” she said.

“There doesn’t seem to be enough employees out there to fill the demand and the requests for staff have increased significantly.”

Advertisements for chefs were up 18 per cent in May compared to the same time last year, while hotel and motel managers were up 11 per cent and coach driver

vacancies were up 64 per cent.

Wallace said times had changed, that nowadays people had other priorities and “want a life”.

“From an industry perspective they need to realise that people want things like a weekend off to spend with their families,” she said.

“People don’t want to live just to work. Most people will do a good job, but that cuts both ways.”

There were also significantly more advertised vacancies for lower-skilled roles like housekeepers up 61 per cent, cooks up 40 per cent, bar attendants and baristas up 18 per cent and kitchen hands up 20 per cent.

Two Auckland high-rises have Grenfell-type cladding Auckland Council is looking into the cladding on high-rise buildings in the wake of London’s Grenfell Tower disaster.

The council says it has already identified 90 buildings of interest and has reviewed 21 of these.

So far, two privately-owned apartment buildings have been found to be clad with aluminium composite panels – a building material used on the Grenfell Tower block which burnt down nine days ago in London.

At a press conference yesterday, Auckland Council general manager Building Control Ian McCormick, said the two buildings are currently being reclad for weathertightness issues, rather than fire safety concerns.

The council would not identify the buildings as the occupants still needed to be told.

It couldn’t comment on reports that occupants of these buildings were being moved out.

Ryman Healthcare yesterday released its annual report to the NZX, showing it made $362.9 million annual pre-tax profit – but have not paid a cent in tax.

Notes to the accounts showed New Zealand’s largest listed retirement business, with a market capitalisation of $4.1b, incurred a tiny $6.2m income tax expense.

But even that was deferred, meaning it didn’t need to be paid.

Under the item ‘current tax expense’, there appeared a bar, indicating no tax was paid for the March 31, 2017 year. The company’s statement of cash flows also showed no tax payments.

I

t’s an idea whose time may have come, but it’s an idea that will take a huge cash injection and massive community support to go from good idea to good business.

The injection of $50,000 by the Government into testing the business plan for a South Island passenger rail service means the idea is being treated seriously.

Until now it’s been a dream on the agenda of tourism and business groups who saw it as a way to boost business on both fronts.

The idea’s knockers were many, but full credit to those who dug their toes in and maintained the train service was an opportunity in waiting.

The cash investment indicates the Government also thinks there’s merit to the idea.

Now it’s time to show our support, to get vocal, to put pen to paper, to go online and say “Yes”.

For the service to be well used not just by travellers but also by locals, however, it would need to run at work-appropriate times for people travelling to jobs in Christchurch, Rolleston or Timaru.

The re-birth of a passenger rail service along the main trunk line can’t help but be a winner for Ashburton, but if it becomes a reality, we’ll be facing one major problem – we’ll have a train service, but we won’t have a train station.

Our elderly station became a victim to under-use and undermaintenance and it went the way of many old buildings – on a fast truck to the demolition yard.

Even if it was around today, however, it would have been a bad fit for a modern-day passenger train service.

If trains become a transport choice in and out of Ashburton, we’ll need a building that’s fit for purpose in a central town location. And logically that would have to be built on to the backside of the i-Site on East Street.

A train stopping once, twice or three times a day, disgorging passengers into the town centre could be just the boost to business our retailers are praying for.

And the rail passengers would bring valuable business in the way of ticketing to the i-Site and that might just safeguard its future.

This could be a project with wins all round.

This year was another 100 per cent fawning – a figure often reached. All achieved by feeding – funny that.

Leadership lacking “

Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown,” as the Bard once said.

As the crown-wearer on the day of the recent British snap election, Theresa May must now be feeing the discomfort of a crown no longer firmly in place.

Her “unelectable” challenger, gnarly Jeremy Corbyn, 30 years a backbencher and never an office-holder throughout that time, emerged, unexpectedly from the contest with that same Crown almost within his reach.

The pundits were perplexed, the gurus gobsmacked. How could this be? Despite last year refusing to accept an overwhelming vote of no confidence from his Labour colleagues, Mr Corbyn refused to lie down.

Instead, he managed to build a small group of supporters who, on the day, came out of their less-than-wealthy homes and voted for him.

During the brief run-up to the election, Mrs May subjected Mr Corbyn to an endless tirade of invective and personal denigration (when she wasn’t hiding in No. 10, dodging leaders’ television debates).

Mr Corbyn’s response to the abuse was simply to say and to reiterate endlessly: “I don’t do personal politics.”

To all our would-be politicians post September 23, take note: voters, worldwide, have become much more sophisticated in their attitudes to politics and government.

Simply rubbishing opponents no longer cuts it. So if theNational Party, in particular, was thinking of indulging themselves in mudslinging and

emphasising the so-called inadequacies of the opposition, it might be wise to think again.

A meaningful manifesto and not merely a complacent continuation of the status quo is a first requirement of those who would be government.

It seems considerable overconfidence amongst the members of Britain’s ruling Conservative Government also played a big part in the failure of the party to obtain the “landslide” victory.

Suddenly, they are about to find out what life is like when you have a tail-wagger to whom you have to defer repeatedly if you are to count on the meagre majority such tail-waggers undertake to give you when it matters.

In Britain such an alliance seems to involve a disparate gaggle of 12 with a variety of conflicting views and priorities from a fringe Irish Party.

In New Zealand, the party that wins the most seats on September 23 – highly unlikely to be a majority in its own right – will also be looking for a partner with whom to coalesce. At the very least it will be looking for one to rely on for confidence and supply, which, again, looks like being Winston Peters and his New Zealand First foot-

sloggers.

One would have to think Winston and his cohort would be a more dependable outfit than the Democratic Ulster Party, the creation of that old rabble-rouser, himself, the Rev. Ian Paisley.

Their views on practically everything can only be described as “quaint and quirky”.

Then there is consistency to be considered by those who would offer us their version of a benign dictatorship. In this regard, the MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) between Labour and Green has further unravelled this past fortnight, with Labour suggesting we take in far too many immigrants, while their “understanding” colleagues feel we should increase our quota from one to five thousand.

Something has to give somewhere if the MOU is going to hold up. As in the UK, so here.

Immigration and the right to move unimpeded from one European country to another seems to have been the famous straw that broke the British camel’s back and led directly to Brexit.

Immigration, over-crowding, homelessness and sleeping in cars, the outward and visible signs of the same thing are happening here.

What’s more, we have, superimposed on the immigration debate, the constantly smouldering issue of “bipartisanship” and the yearning in some quarters for two distinct strands of government in Aotearoa, New Zealand, “them” and “us”, of which Messrs Brash and Peters are the best known opponents.

There can be little doubt that over the past eight years the National-led administration has contributed substantially – led mainly by Mr Chris Finlayson – to this doctrine, though I sometimes feel many of his colleagues are still blissfully unaware of the effects of his stewardship. The prospect remains of the balloon going up, not necessarily as far into the future as some might have us believe.

“We are all New Zealanders,” cry the good doctor, Brash and his fellow “Hobson’s Choice” believers, echoed, loudly by “Bottom Line” Winston. Maybe we are but not, I suggest, in quite the way those two gentlemen have in mind. Again, “the water belongs to no-one in particular”, or, “to us all”, but can we really be sure of that?

Now, in the sort of “breaking news” beloved by media sleuths, there is talk of a developing “Diptongate” involving secret tapes, as well as our laid-back PM in some sort of “scandal”.

As I said, “uneasy lies the head that wears the crown”.

Mr Little currently holds 7 per cent in the polls but, at one stage, Corbyn had less even than that.

Who knows on whose head the Kiwi crown will come home to roost?

Immigration – a Christian’s perspective

n the Christian Bible, in the Gospel of John 10.10, Jesus tells his followers, using the image of a good shepherd who cares for his flock, that he has come “so that they may have life and have it to the full”.

He contrasts this explanation of his mission in life with that of a thief who “comes only to steal and kill and destroy”.

As the fortunate heirs of two millennia of human history that has been strongly shaped by Christian beliefs and values, we take it virtually for granted that as human beings we have a dignity that is to be valued and respected, and human rights that need to be propounded and protected … To live a full life, from conception to natural death, is not only a Christian belief but a fundamen-

tal human desire, for oneself and for those we love.

Seeking the opportunity to live with dignity, to have the freedom to receive an education, to work at a job or profession that pays a living wage, to marry and raise a family, should one desire to do so, and to feed, clothe, house and educate in turn, to own property and so on … these are the things we New Zealanders value highly.

Since we are all migrants, or descended from migrants who came to these magnificent islands from other lands, we can fairly assume that for most a mo-

tivation has been to live a better life than was possible “back there and back then”. And, as migrants we have brought our cultures, our costumes, our histories and philosophies, our sports and our religions, our education and our work skills, and, above all, our hopes and dreams with us.

These are the “added value” of migration. As a nation of immigrants, we continue to increase, multiply and diversify.

Recent moves by our politicians are aiming to raise the bar and make it more difficult to come and to stay here.

Policies that effectively treat people just as expendable objects of monetary value, who can be used for a short period and then discarded, to be replaced by another group that will be treated the same, are a real affront to human dignity and human rights.

It may not be easy to develop a sound, just and humane system to control immigration, but it is vital that we do so.

The minister, Michael Woodhouse, stated on a recent TV interview that an employer whose hospitality business was being threatened by recent changes

in immigration rules needed to “change their business model”.

What is really needed is a change of heart and a more humane perspective on human rights, hopes and real-life situations.

As people of a district where these a very real felt concerns, we need to continue to voice our concerns to those who have the power to make changes.

Trump: ‘I don’t have tapes’ Donald Trump says he did not make and does not have tapes of his conversation with fired FBI director James Comey.

“With all of the recently reported electronic surveillance, intercepts, unmasking and illegal leaking of information, I have no idea ... whether there are ‘tapes’ or recordings of my conversations with James Comey, but I did not make, and do not have, any such recordings,” Trump said in a pair of tweets.

However, Trump did not explain why he made the suggestion in the first place, which came in a tweet days after he fired Comey.

“James Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!” Trump tweeted on May 12.

Comey, who was running the FBI’s investigation into possible collusion between associates of the president and Russians seeking to influence last year’s election before he was fired on May 9, says Trump pressed him to drop the inquiry into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Hollywood star for Irwin The late Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin will be honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame – joining other big name stars such as Audrey Hepburn, Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas and Marilyn Monroe. May offers EU citizens post-Brexit status British Prime Minister Theresa May promised yesterday EU citizens will not be immediately kicked out of Britain when it leaves the union and says their fate will be a top priority in Brexit negotiations – prompting guarded praise from other EU leaders at a tense time for the continent.

May’s proposals at an EU summit were a carefully timed gesture days after talks began on Britain’s departure.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel called them “a good start.”

May laid out benchmarks for the rights of 3 million

EU citizens living legally in Britain and how they should be shielded from excessive harm because of the divorce.

She made it clear that Britain wants reciprocal measures for the 1.5 million British citizens living in the EU. The issue of citizens’ rights is especially sensitive in the Brexit talks.

Under May’s proposal, EU citizens with legal residence in the UK will not be asked to leave and will be offered a chance to regularise their situation after Brexit, a senior British official said. May also promised to cut the burdensome bureaucracy such pa-

perwork can involve, the official said. “No one will face a cliff edge,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity since May made the proposal at a closed-door EU summit dinner.

Merkel welcomed May’s promises, but insisted that “there are, of course, many, many other issues.” She mentioned the bill that Britain will have to pay to leave and questions about how to deal with the border between Northern Ireland and EU member Ireland.

“It means we have lots left to do,” Merkel said.

Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern said May’s proposals are “a first step” but warned there are still many European citizens in Britain who would not be covered by the proposals. “We are now at the start of all this and we don’t know whether it will be a sprint or a marathon,” he said.

The Dutch prime minister, Mark Rutte, said there are “thousands of questions to ask” about May’s proposals, and questioned why the British leader was laying them out with EU leaders instead of with the Brexit negotiators.

Kidman close to quitting Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman has revealed she once came close to quitting acting. In a one-on-one interview with director Sofia Coppola, the star said being pregnant made her reconsider her high-profile career. “At one point – I think I was pregnant with Sunday – and I was like, ‘I’m going to give up acting, I’m done. It’s too much. And the baby and that’s it’,” explained Kidman of the 2008 period. However, her mother, Janelle, talked her out of it. “My mum was like, ‘Don’t do that. Take some time off but don’t give it up’,” Kidman recalled. “She said, ‘Keep your toe in the water’.”

Boys wear skirts in protest at no shorts rule Schoolboys have turned up for class dressed in skirts in protest over a no-shorts uniform policy, despite the heatwave.

Students at ISCA College in Exeter formed a mass protest over the “inflexible” uniform policy which insists boys wear long trousers even throughout summer.

On Thursday, five boys led the way by wearing skirts on the hottest day of the year.

Yesterday, more than 50 decided to do the same, with some borrowing skirts off girls near the school to join the demonstration.

After the teenagers turned up in their skirts, the school said they were considering changing the policy.

But fellow pupils later reported that many of the boys were put in isolation by the school.

Yesterday, one student claimed he was told to change his skirt because it was too short while another said it was because his legs were too hairy.

They added that some of the older boys bought pink razors from a local shop and shaved their legs on the way to school.

Teenager Josh Baxter said: “I wore a skirt yesterday and was

One of Tom Cruise’s former co-stars has described the actor as someone who “understood how to successfully juggle Bible study and groupies”. Curtis Armstrong appeared alongside Cruise in the 1983 movie Risky Business and has penned a juicy memoir, which reveals what 19-year-old Cruise was like behind the scenes. In the book Revenge of the Nerd, Armstrong writes that Cruise “self-identified as a born-again Christian” and would often choose to read the Bible over socialising. Armstrong was understandably surprised then when he discovered that Cruise was “cutting a wide swath through the local talent”.

FOSTER HOMES NEEDED

Because some need a little extra help.

The foster programme aims to increase the number of animals we are able to assist.

Each year the demand for animals needing to come into care grows, so in order for us to be able to meet these demands we are always looking to find more Foster homes to provide the animals the love and time needed until they are adopted. Every animal that comes into foster care is given a second chance at life. Your work as a ‘foster parent’ really can ‘save lives’!

We have a limited amount of space and people to care for these animals so we rely on our fantastic fosterers to offer temporary homes to animals in need.

The majority of the animals in need of foster parents are kittens, with or without their mothers. We particularly need fosterers during the kitten season, (October to May) when we have hundreds of abandoned and unwanted kittens coming into our care. Although this is often our busiest time, we need temporary homes all year round.

We understand that looking after an animal is a big undertaking so we try to make it as easy as possible. We will supply all food, medicine, necessary equipment, toys and bedding, to help make your animal comfortable within your home, you just provide the cuddles and daily care. Due to company growth a fulltime Seed Cleaning Machinist / Storeman position has become available in our Rakaia processing facility.

Reporting to the site manager duties will include overseeing (in conjunction with the site manager) the production and operation of a modern seed cleaning plant, serving farmer clients, forklift operation and general store duties.
