The rain may be over but the clean-up is likely to take some time, which is not surprising given the district almost doubled its previous 24-hour rainfall record on Friday. Graham’s Weather Station in Netherby recorded 116.9mm of rain that day, dwarfing the earlier record of 63.2mm set on July 31, 2008. By yesterday there was little sign of that as the floodwaters had receded and most roads re-opened. However, problems remained for some people, with the Ashburton District Council asking residents to be aware of sewage issues triggered by flooding. Residents who had signs of sewage in
surface flooding on their properties were urged to phone the council on 307-7700. They should also avoid any contact with contaminated areas and evacuate if sewage was either blocking property access or had gone inside. Community relations manager Vincie Billante said council contractors worked around the clock over the weekend to address stormwater issues and drain blockages. “Council understands that this is of great concern to residents at the moment,” she said. “We appreciate how difficult this event has been for residents and ask for continued patience whilst this work is under way to look after the public’s health.”
The council’s boil water notices for the Methven, Mt Somers, Methven-Springfield and Montalto schemes were still in place late yesterday. Billante said Fulton Hogan had been busy over the weekend tending to road damage throughout the district. Roads still closed late yesterday were Barkers Road near the Rakaia Gorge and Thompsons Track. Other roads around the district, particularly around Methven, still had water on them. They were open to traffic but drivers should drive to the conditions, she said.
