Maori names only The names of New Zealand’s towns and cities should be in Maori language, former All Black Dallas Seymour says.

He made the call during Maori Language Week, saying reverting to the Maori names would make te reo “normal and an everyday part of life”, and “celebrate our combined heritage”.

Under his suggestion Auckland would be known as Tamaki Makaurau, Wellington as Te Whanganuia-Tara, and Christchurch as Otautahi. “Having te reo visible daily makes it normal and an everyday part of life, which it should be,” Mr Seymour said.

Beetles kill George Harrison tribute tree A tree planted in a Los Angeles park in memory of the late Beatles guitarist George Harrison has been killed by beetles, a city councillor has said. Tom LaBonge, whose district includes Griffith Park, told The Los Angeles Times that the pine tree, planted in 2004, would be replaced shortly. It had grown more than three metres in the space of a decade, only to succumb to beetles known to attack trees in the vast and popular inner-city park, the Times reported. Harrison, the Beatles’ lead guitarist as well as a chart-topping solo artist and avid gardener, lived in Los Angeles prior to his death in 2001.

Thirteen arrests; 44 charges laid

Gaskin said Operation Webster focussed on people “who do not think the law applies to them”.

It saw police from Christchurch and Timaru, assisted by members of the Armed Offenders’ Squad, converge on the town.

“It’s targeting the underbelly of Ashburton – the people that we don’t want living here,” Mr Gaskin said.

“Ashburton does have a drug underbelly, unfortunately.

“There’ve always been drug users in town, but there are more of them now.”

The first search warrants were executed at about 8am.

Eight addresses were searched – and there would be more to come, police said.

The “underbelly of Ashburton – the people that we don’t want living here” were targeted in a drug scene shakedown that started early yesterday morning, police say.

In one case, police placed a sign outside a house they had just raided. It read “Drugs will no longer be sold from this house”.

In all, 13 people were arrested and 44 drug related charges were laid.

Cannabis, methamphetamine and a substantial amount of money were also seized as numerous search warrants were executed around urban and rural Ashburton.

It was common in cities for such signs to be put outside addresses where police suspected drugs were being sold. Yesterday may have been the first time they were used in Ashburton.

“The sign makes people realise it’s serious,” he said.

In the past, people who suspected there was a drug house in their street or community often did nothing about it. Po-

lice wanted people not to turn a blind eye to such activity, he said. “My feeling is this is a good community, there are just some people taking advantage of others.”

Four of those arrested were held in custody last night and will appear in the Christchurch District Court today. The other nine will appear in the Ashburton District Court at a later date. Mr Gaskin was pleased with the progress made yes-

terday, but said there was still work to be done.

“We’ve certainly woken the place up. Has it been entirely successful? I’d say no, but we have made a step in the right direction,” Mr Gaskin said.

Police would continue to take more steps in the coming days.

“It’s not going to be just one day; we will go on for a period of time and we hope that we’ll stop people from going back to their old behaviour.”

Operation Webster is an ongoing operation aimed at shaking Ashburton’s drug underbelly up, and phase one was about breaking the cycle for those in the drug world, and informing the community of what was going on around them.

Police visited a number of businesses and knocked on countless doors yesterday as they handed out flyers to raise awareness of drugs and organised crime, Mr Banfield said.

It was about reassuring the community; letting them know that only a small minority of the community were involved in the district’s drug underbelly, he said.

An operation aimed at hitting Mid Canterbury’s drug scene hard is about more than just locking up the bad guys, Ashburton’s top cop says.

But Ashburton police senior sergeant Scott Banfield said the operation was just as much about helping those in need as it was charging those found with drugs in their possession.

Police identified and interviewed a number of drug users during yesterday’s first day of what will be an ongoing operation, he said.

It was hoped that by sitting down and talking to the known drug users and letting them know what help was available to them, police might be able to assist in breaking the cycle of drug abuse, he said.

Drugs are behind a rise in crimes such as thefts from cars and burglaries in Ashburton in recent months, police say.

Mid Canterbury’s crime scene is under the microscope with the start yesterday of Operation Webster, an operation which police hope will make significant inroads into the district’s drug scene.

Gaskin yesterday called on the community to stop turning a blind eye to activity they deem to be suspicious.

“There has been a lot of crime in Ashburton in the last 12 months and the community needs to do something about it.”

Much of that crime involved people stealing in order to get money to buy drugs, Mr Gaskin said.

People can expect to see more police on the street as Operation Webster continues.

“It will be ongoing until we are satisfied that people have changed their attitudes, or stopped committing offences,” Mr Gaskin said.

Any suspicious behaviour needed to be reported to police immediately.

“There’s been a steady trickle of less desirable people moving into the district, and an increase in gang members.

“We are saying to the community ‘you don’t have to tolerate this’.”

Christchurch City Council might be battling to meet time targets for building consent issue and site inspections, but Ashburton’s teams are meeting deadlines – most of the time.

For the first six months of the year, the council’s inspection teams issued 689 consents and 97.82 per cent of those were issued within the 20 working days time frame.

The remainder ran over by just one or two days, Ashburton District Council building services manager Michael Wong said.

The council runs a team of five inspectors compared to the city council’s 37, but the strug-

to issue consents. Ashburton, however, passed its last accreditation with flying colours and is just awaiting sign-off on its second pass.

Ashburton’s inspection teams have provided a helping hand to Christchurch over the past few months, issuing $10 million worth of consents. It is not processing city consents at present because of a rising workload within the district.

“We have 98 consents being processed at the moment and 33 of those are for new homes,” Mr Wong said.

Add a large commercial building to the mix, and the workload rises dramatically.

Currently the council has consents for Ashburton Hospital’s

theatre block and the Westburn Courts complex to process and Mr Wong said he was aware a consent application for an aged care hospital at Lochlea Lifestyle village was about to be lodged.

A project such as the EA Networks Centre required about 140 hours processing time. Site inspections on this project could take up to a full day for each stage, he said.

“We do pretty well. We’ve got a good team and our builders, plumbers and so on are getting a lot better at providing information. We try to be proactive. Yes, we’re the people who have to do the compliance but we’re also part of your building team.”

Vote binding

The future of the Winchmore water supply is now in the hands of its users.

Voting papers on the supply’s future have been posted and residents can have a say on the future of the scheme through a binding referendum.

The proposal to close the scheme was initiated by a request from residents and the referendum is part of the process required to close a small community water scheme.

Council assets manager Andrew Guthrie said that if 75 per cent or more of votes cast were in favour of the closure, the supply would cease to operate from noon, on November 14.

“Information on the proposed closure includes a summary of the Medical Officer of Health’s recommendations, and this has been included with the voting papers,” he said.

Voting papers must be returned by noon on August 14.

A polling booth will be open during normal office hours until August 14 at the council’s Baring Square West, office.

The results of the referendum will be announced on 20 August.

Home for prisoner The Ashburton man with an intellectual disability who was remanded in custody is now in a residential facility. Yesterday the Guardian reported on the plight of Brett Allan King, who appeared in the Ashburton District Court on charges of burglary and driving matters. Because his disability did not meet the criteria for mental health support, Judge Joanna Maze was left with no option but to send him to prison to wait out his remand. Yesterday afternoon King’s lawyer, Michelle Barrell said he had been transferred to a Christchurch hospital, which offers residential support. King will remain there pending his return to court for sentencing on August 25.

Truck rolls on ice A light truck hit ice and rolled four times near Fuchsia Creek, in the Lower Buller Gorge, yesterday morning. Westport police community constable Paul Sampson said the WestReef Services truck was travelling from Westport towards Inangahua when it hit the ice, lost control and rolled about 8am. St John Buller territorial manager Robbie Blankenstein said the truck’s two male occupants suffered minor injuries including bruises, bumps and small cuts. Firefighters were called to the crash. Fire chief Pat O’Dea said the truck had struck thick ice on a bridge.

Birthday celebrations planned

Ashburton’s domain is about to have a birthday and a handful of its original settlers will be there to celebrate.

The domain turns 150 later this year with some of the first plantings, some macrocarpa and pines, still standing and likely to be so for many more years, said Ashburton District Council open spaces manager David Askin.

The birthday celebrations, planned to run from October 25 to November 30 will be more about people than plants, however.

There will be concerts, fairs, sports matches, civic ceremonies and an historic display, but the main event will be a sculpture symposium. This will see one tonne blocks of Mt Somers stone turned into art works that will later be auctioned.

Sculptors can buy a block until the end of August and when the first stone is chipped they will have two weeks to complete their work. The symposium will be held in a marquee near the Walnut Avenue children’s pool and playground.

Two artists have already committed to the project and six more are in the pipeline. A chainsaw wood sculpture competi-

tion may also be added to the programme.

While there is no upper limit on the number of working artists who can be part of the symposium, Mr Askin said he hopes to have at least eight sculptures to auction on the last day. The symposium is likely to become a biennial event, shared with the Waitaki District Council.

During the five week celebration, Mr Askin said there will be a number of special sporting events staged by domain users and domain tours will be available. An exhibition on domain history is planned in the Ashburton Museum.

The centennial celebrations will wrap up on November 30 with the sculpture auction, a concert and a fair.

The 150th celebrations tie in with the Grigg family’s personal celebrations to mark their family’s arrival in the Ashburton District.

Ashburton founding father John Grigg was a member of the first domain board and the iron gates at the domain’s West Street entrance were made in the blacksmith’s shop at the Griggs’ farm, Longbeach..

During the family’s celebrations a plaque will be placed on the Baring Square statue of John Grigg.

Controversy surrounding Nigella Lawson hasn’t stopped Whittaker’s from again taking the title of New Zealand’s most trusted brand.

Boiler room fire A meat processing plant near Hastings has been damaged by a fire early yesterday. Fire crews were called to the Silver Fern Farms meat processing unit in Whakatu, just after 4am, central fire communications shift manager Murray Dunbar said. Red light relief on way Relief could be at hand for motorists and cyclists suffering red-light rage on Auckland’s clogged roads. Road users are being promised less waiting time at traffic lights linked to CCTV cameras. Ashburton District councillors today will walk a fine line as they try to balance community feeling against their legislative requirement to allow products such as synthetic cannabis to be sold in the district.

The council wrote its draft locally approved products policy (LAPP) that came with regulations about where the products could and could not be sold.

This went out for public comment and several individuals and groups made submissions. The council now has to consider those against its draft policy.

No submitters wanted to take their concerns to a hearing.

While none supported the sale of products such as synthetic cannabis, all submitters acknowledged Government legislation allowed their sale and the council had to write a policy that would meet local needs.

All submitters said that the council needed to impose tougher rules around buffer zones that would separate sales points from sensitive areas.

The council has suggested a 50 metre zone around educational facilities, churches, residential areas and open public spaces. That does not go far enough for most who wanted a buffer zone of at least 100 metres.

Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan suggested this could extend to 1000 metres.

“The distance should act to avoid the likely activities associated with such retailers and their customers negatively influencing the operation and nature of neighbouring schools, areas and spaces…once sold, there is no restriction on

a customer immediately using the psychoactive substance they have just purchased…” Mr McMillan wrote.

He was concerned that people under the influence of the substances would congregate, interact with each other and the general public. This would be unacceptable within visibility and hearing range of an education centre, he wrote.

For Ashburton Borough School’s board of trustees, David Harford said the council also needed to tighten up its proposed sale zone, confining this to shops within East, Cass, Havelock and Moore Streets, possibly including businesses fronting onto West Street within that area.

Sharon Mackenzie and Brendon Adam wanted the buffer zone to extend to 500 metres and they wanted the places it was imposed to also include movie theatres, museums, libraries, public toilets and sports facilities (including swimming pools.)

A shop selling synthetic cannabis had been established in Rakaia and based on that experience, the Rakaia Community Association said in its submission said that if the council cared about the future of younger people it would find a way to keep the products out of the district.

The council might be bound by government legislation to provide for their sale, but the association was firmly of the view that they should not be available in any community, association chair Neil Pluck wrote.

While the council will deliberate on the submissions today, it is unlikely to sign off the final LAPP until the next council meeting on August 6.

Arsonist unsuccessful

BY KATIE HOLLAND A Tokoroa arsonist with a “significant personality dysfunction” has unsuccessfully appealed her jail sentence.

Judith Merel Ane Meha, then 49, was sentenced in the High Court at Rotorua last November to four and a half years’ jail after being found guilty of three counts of arson and one of attempted arson.

Meha had met the victim on an internet dating site and lived with him for several months.

After they broke up and she moved out she began sending him threatening text messages.

In September 2012 she set fire to his home three times and attempted to do so a fourth time.

Meha appealed the sentence to the Court of Appeal, claiming it was manifestly excessive on two grounds – that Justice Jillian Mallon had taken too high a starting point and that the sentence was not discounted enough for Meha’s “personality functioning difficulties”, otherwise good character and lack of previous convictions. - APNZ

Call to get back to basics

Modern teaching is about tailoring learning to individual children and sometimes kids need extra help, according to Mid Canterbury educators.

It was a shared sentiment by schools and private educators.

D. Ross Gibson is a retired teacher turned private tutor.

In the past 17 years tutoring he had taken on 236 pupils, all by word of mouth.

At the height of his parttime practice he had 42 pupils, but had lately reduced his workload to 10.

“Unfortunately there is still demand out there for private tutors,” he said.

He said some of the children he had seen were “pretty bad” and often at least three years behind where they needed to be.

He blamed the fast paced curriculum learning.

“The thing is they are not getting the individual instruction through the school at the appropriate time.

“Or the work is going through at such a fast clip that they are just not catching on and too much of it is being done on the computer,” he said.

“To me physically writing something is more important than pushing a key,” he said.

“I don’t know what the whole answer is, go back when I started teaching we had 44 in the classroom, today we have nowhere near that number,” he said.

However, he believed additional learning in the curriculum was detrimental to the students.

“It’s just a matter of going right back to the basics,” Mr Gibson said.

However Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president Chris Murphy disagreed.

He said children were being prepared to face the world.

“We are dealing with increasingly complicated social and behavioural issues that were not present in our schools 20, 40, 60 years ago and teachers are having to deal with that first before they have to get on with education,” he said.

He said it was not all classes in all schools but just one reason some children did not learn as well as others.

Mr Murphy said digital learning was just another tool in the classroom like an atlas or a dictionary.

“We are doing the children a disservice if we don’t prepare them for that.”

“It’s just a tool to assist with learning. You’re never going to replace good teachers with digital equipment.”

Mr Murphy said good teaching was the “best possible thing to put in front of a child”.

“Teachers need to learn to develop programmes for the individuals, tailoring for each child that’s what we want for every child,” Mr Murphy said.

It was something the educators agreed on. “(Mr Gibson) is working out what the children can and can’t do and that’s what we want for every single teacher to be doing for every single child,” Mr Murphy said.

Middle income Ashburton is one of the growing number of groups to access budget advice in town.

Demand on the service had increased in the past year and Ashburton Budget Advisory Service acting co-ordinator Joan Lawn said the service had even more new clients than usual in the past year.

“Although Ashburton is a fairly affluent town, we are seeing quite a bit of poverty,” Mrs

Lawn said. “We are very busy.

We are up… we had 199 new clients in the last year, that’s new clients seeking budget advice.”

Mrs Lawn said post-Christmas was a bad time, then February/March when the overdue accounts started to arrive.

She recommended people presented early rather than leave their bills too late, there were also a number of plans people could choose.

On Saturday night the Fernando family noticed swelling on the side of Pansy, who never wandered far from her Elm Row home. The cat was shaved and the vet noticed more than a dozen holes, possibly caused by a pellet gun, around her body. One of those pellets had pierced her stomach, and despite intravenous antibiotics she died on Tuesday.

Trust fund set up A trust fund has been established by the family of Rob Ayley to support his two sons after he was killed in the MH17 disaster. Rob was one of 289 victims on board the Malaysia Airlines flight when it was shot down over Ukraine on Friday.

John Ayley, Rob’s father, said the family decided to set up the trust to allow people to donate to the two boys left behind. “It is to make sure the boys have a roof over their heads and a reasonable standard of living.” Rob and wife Sharlene’s sons Seth, 4, and Taylor, 2, would be the only beneficiaries, he said.

One-way bridges stay West Coast drivers should get used to the single-lane bridges around the region – the New Zealand Transport Agency says it has no plans to widen them.

NZTA southern regional director Jim Harland said they recognised the high number of bridges on the West Coast, but added that most of them still had a long economic life. Forty-three one-way bridges are located on the State highway network, out of a stock of 446 on the West Coast.

Check results ‘disappointing’

By Sophie Ryan Plunket and police were disappointed to find 22 children aged under five not properly restrained in vehicles during a police operation in Auckland yesterday.

A checkpoint set up on Great South Road in Manukau stopped 141 cars and issued 133 offence notices over four hours.

Inspector Neil Fisher said police found 22 children under the age of five who were unrestrained or incorrectly restrained.

“We are shocked to find that parents are willing to make this sort of risk with their child’s life.

“Additionally 18 children between the ages of eight and 15 were unrestrained, and three adults.

“The results we’ve found make it clear that people are still gambling with their lives, and the lives of their children, on the road.

“We can’t emphasise enough that simply wearing your seatbelt can be the one thing that prevents a tragedy or saves your life.”

She said she wasn’t surprised with the number of unrestrained children they came across.

“It’s strongly disappointing,” she said.

“We always hope [the number of unrestrained children] would be lower.”

Ms Budel said a number of children were in appropriate seats but were incorrectly fastened, or in seats that were old and past their expiration date. “[Parents] put [children] in very thick jackets and then they can’t get the harness closed up.

“An expired seat is not the end of the world but it might not perform well in a crash.”

She said the numbers seen at the checkpoint were reflective of most parts of Auckland and Northland.

“It takes a lot of effort to do the right thing. “[The parents] haven’t thought of the fact that restraining their child in the right way will keep them safer than just putting them on the back seat without a booster seat at all.”

Both Mid Canterbury ducks and duck hunters will have to be on alert this coming weekend.

It will be the last weekend of the duck hunting season for the year, and as such is likely to entice out twice as many hunters as other weekends throughout the season.

And while the ducks will be dodging bullets, hunters themselves will have to make sure they have their licence, the right ammunition, and do not shoot any protected species.

Central South Island Fish and Game officer Mark Webb said there had not been any prosecutions since opening weekend, but rangers “probably will be” out this coming weekend.

Opening weekend had been “a bit disappointing” in terms of enforcement, and he hoped closing weekend would be better. At opening weekend in May there were eight hunters in Mid Canterbury who had their firearms and lead shot seized, as well as facing offence notices and fines for either not having a game bird licence or using prohibited lead shot.

Mr Webb said the weather was looking good for Saturday, with southerlies forecast on Friday likely to make the sea rough, so send ducks to land.

Hunters nabbed an average of 17 ducks each on opening weekend in the Central South Island, and the average season bag was 25 to 35 birds per hunter, with some hunters continuing to shoot most weekends throughout the season.

Crown to appeal discharge Crown Law is appealing the discharge without conviction handed down to the son of Maori King Tuheitia Paki earlier this month.

Korotangi Paki, 19, was let off charges of burglary, theft and drink driving by Judge Philippa Cunningham after his defence counsel successfully argued a conviction would ruin his chances of succeeding to the throne.

He had earlier pleaded guilty to all the charges, which related to two separate incidents dating from March this year and October 2013.

In a statement, media advisor for Crown Law Jan Fulstow said an appeal had been made.

“Crown Law does a very careful and thorough review of cases such as this before a

decision is made. “Having now completed a review of this case Crown Law has today filed an application in the High Court to appeal the matter.

“As this case is now before the Court we will make no further comment on the matter.”

Judge Cunningham said in the Auckland District Court on July 3 that she was “driven to the conclusion” that Paki would lose out on being a successor if convicted.

“There’s only two sons and in my view it’s important that the king at the appropriate time has the widest possible choice of a successor and it’s important for Mr Paki, as one of those two sons, to have the potential to be a successor in time.”

While his drink driving was

moderately serious, she said, the direct and indirect consequences of a conviction were “out of all proportion” to the offence.

However, she said she was concerned that alcohol had been a factor in both incidents, and made the ruling conditional on receiving a report from a medical professional clearing Paki of any alcohol addiction or alcohol abuse issues.

He was also disqualified from holding a driver’s licence for eight months.

Paki’s friends – Te Ahorangi Totorewa, 20, Hamuera Wipoha Pugh, 19, and Raa Ngaru Smith, 18 – were all discharged without conviction in Gisborne District Court over the March burglary and theft incident.

boards from a Top Ten Holiday Park and clothes from a man’s car after a drinking session in March.

Judge Cunningham also praised the work Paki and his friends had undertaken in terms of restorative justice and community work, as well as an on-going mentoring programme.

Defence for Paki, Paul Wicks QC, said the consequences of a conviction would outweigh the seriousness of the crime, because it would render the teen – who will become a father in September – ineligible for the role of king.

However, police prosecutor F. Gul Qaisrani, opposed a discharge without conviction, saying it would send the wrong message to society.

Verdict disappoints The family of a 16-year-old boy stabbed to death by another teenager in 2010 reacted with disappointment and outrage to a High Court jury’s manslaughter verdict yesterday.

William Peter Lewis, 16, was fatally stabbed three times on April 1, 2010, in Oamaru by Daniel Ethan Smith, 20, also 16 at the time.

At 12.40pm on the sixth day of Smith’s retrial, a jury in the High Court in Timaru delivered their verdict.

The jury of six men and six women found Smith not guilty of murder, but guilty of manslaughter.

Smith was convicted and has been remanded in custody. He is due to be sentenced on August 29.

Smith remained calm when the jury returned the verdicts, while there were gasps and tears from William’s family and friends.

Outside the court, William’s father Peter Lewis criticised the verdict and questioned if three stabs in the back with a 20cm hunting knife did not mean murder then what did.

He believed the evidence justified a murder verdict “totally”.

Mr Lewis described the manslaughter verdict as “an outrage”, but vowed he and the family would present victim impact statements again when Smith was sentenced.

William’s mother Jenny Brokenshire said the family was “frustrated” and “really disappointed” by the outcome.

“But we would like to say a huge thanks to all William’s friends and family and to Andrew and Anne-Marie McRae, Derek Shaw and Victim Support – they have been fantastic,” she said.

The number of William’s supporters in court for all six days of the retrial was an indication of how much he was loved and missed, she said.

Smith’s family did not want to comment.

Crown prosecutors Andrew and Anne-Marie McRae had alleged Smith had murderous intent when he chose to stab William in the back “not once, not twice, but three times” during what was “not more than a verbal scuffle”.

Smith’s defence, Christopher Stevenson and Catherine Milnes, claimed he acted in selfdefence, “instinctively to a situation he didn’t create”.

The jury of six men and six women retired for deliberations at 2.50pm on Tuesday, and broke for the night at 5.20pm.

They delivered the verdict after further deliberations yesterday.

Methven woman takes up challenge

Methven grandmother Wendy Carter likes nothing more than a glass of white wine as she cooks tea each evening.

But she is foregoing her daily tipple as she participates in the national cancer support fundraising Dry July initiative.

“I actually feel so much better for it,” Mrs Carter said this week.

She said her main reason for participating in the challenge was her friend Adele becoming ill with cancer, when she was only in her 40s.

As Adele’s battle continued, Mrs Carter was inspired by her courage and outlook on life.

“She’s just so amazingly positive,” Mrs Carter said.

Additionally her mother Jean was a breast cancer survivor.

“And I have worked with a lot of cancer patients when I was nursing,” she added.

She also had her own reasons for taking part.

“The other more selfish reason is I thought I was drinking too much,” Mrs Carter said.

Not only would she have a glass of wine while preparing tea, but also often another glass after tea.

Now she has a glass of soda water with a slice of lime.

She said not having drunk any alcohol for over three weeks was benefiting her waistline, and she had lost three kilograms.

Mrs Carter said she recently attended a Methven lawn bowls function where her favourite wine was put on the table as part of a member’s birthday celebrations.

“But I resisted,” she said.

She was not sure how much she would end up fundraising, but was expecting friends and relatives would donate at the end of the challenge via the Dry July website or Facebook page.

eddlers of misery and despair have no place in a town we choose to call

home.

They have no place selling drugs in our neighbourhoods and they have no place bringing danger – no matter how unlikely – to our streets.

But they are here nonetheless, doing business from houses beside our homes and bringing crime to yards near where children play.

Some dealers may think they thumb their nose at the law. In truth, they thumb their nose at our community.

The alleged drug trade in our suburbs was hinted at yesterday when police began executing search warrants at properties all over Ashburton.

Among those targeted was a house on Allens Road. It was no secret the house was raided: the police even erected a sign suggesting what happened.

The white footpath-style sign, plonked on the roof of a car parked near the house, read: “Drugs will no longer be sold from this house”. It was big, bold and definite.

It was also shocking. It was outside a house on the same street as Allenton Kindergarten and Allenton School. Children walked past it every day, just as they did yesterday morning.

Children are not big drug buyers, so it could be argued the alleged sale of illicit drugs on a school route is not, in itself, dangerous.

But that does not mean properties linked to drugs are home to simple, demand-driven businesses. Far from it.

The drugs trade is one of those rare businesses where some buyers will do almost anything to secure their next purchase.

Some are stealing from cars.

Some are breaking into houses.

Some are neglecting the people who matter to get what they can for their next fix.

And where is their fix from?

From small-time growersellers? From a friend of a friend? Or from people much more closely aligned with organised crime?

It does not matter where it comes from or who wants to buy it. It matters that our community has to deal with whatever happens next.

I agree wholeheartedly with Mr Cocks that the decline in morality (and in our quality of life) has declined over the years and I believe will continue to decline unless the church is revived.

When the apostle Paul came to town there was a revival or a riot or both. It is sad to say but Paul would not be accepted in most of our churches today.

We have the most powerful weapon at our disposal that will back off any evil force – the Word of God and the name of Jesus! – Evil has become good and good become evil. What a woeful condition. When are we going to hate it?

Mr Cocks makes the point that many leave church because they are not spiritually fed. Well let me say I would leave too and sadly that that is the case in many. But after 34 years in ministry the decline I have seen has not been through a lack of being fed, but one of not enduring sound doctrine.

ew Zealand’s education policy should not be a coffee shop deal. We are coming to the point in this pre-election where policies are being formulated and promoted in order to win votes.

Our children, parents, schools and communities deserve better than political deals done in coffee shops with education policies being a bargaining chip.

With the election result a foregone conclusion I believe Prime Minister John Key should have the confidence to let the voting public know who he intends to have a coffee with and what is on the table.

Major changes to our education system should not be part of this discussion. Otherwise we could possibly end up with the following scenario: Phone rings in the beehive.

“Hello it’s John speaking.”

“John, it’s Colin here, can we have a quick coffee and a chat?”

“Colin who?”

“Colin, Colin Craig from the Conservative Party.”

“Oh – vapour trail guy, sure what’s on your mind?”

“Well John I would rather discuss this over a cuppa in private actually.”

“Hmmm, last time I did this Colin it didn’t go very well.

Can you think of somewhere we can go and no-one will notice?”

“Sure John, I was thinking of the Somerset Grocer on Burnett Street. They have a great range of tea and coffee.”

“Burnett Street is in Parnell?”

“No John, Burnett Street is in Ashburton. I thought we could meet in heartland New Zealand, in a simple town with no chance of the media finding out.”

Three days later a little meeting takes place in the Somerset Grocer. Two men in smart suits sit huddled over coffees talking quietly: “Are you sure Colin we will be unnoticed here? There are a lot of farmers who could be on the way to the bank and could see us.”

“No John, I had my advisers advise me that all farmers are busy right now cropping their heifers.”

“That sounds painful – are you sure that is right?”

“Yes and then once they have finished they go straight on to planting their lambs ready to harvest them in time for Christmas.”

New Zealand families, schools and communities deserve better than political deals done in coffee shops with education policies being a bargaining chip.

“Look John, currently I’m not polling enough to get in after the election. I thought we could come to an arrangement whereby I support you with supply and demand votes and you allow a few of our ideas through.”

“Ok – I can see this working, what ideas? Are there any in particular you really want to see go ahead?”

“Too right John. Education is a big cost and simply put we believe in parental choice.

We think we cut the cost of running the education system and give it back to schools and parents.”

“Ok, I can follow giving savings back to schools but how does the parental choice work?”

“Well John we could use vouchers so that the funding follows the child. A par-

ent chooses to send them to a school that they believe best suits their needs. When they enrol the child at the school of their choice they give over a voucher and the school receives the funding.”

“Whoa – that’s not exactly new is it Colin. Sweden introduced this and since the 2000s their rankings in the international PISA results have been declining. That is not exactly a ringing endorsement is it?”

“Details John, merely details.

The point is we believe in giving people a choice. That is the heart of the matter.”

“Right I can agree with giving people a choice. If we allow your education ideas and you support us in supply and demand, what do you want in return?”

In brief 121 and counting A 121-year-old Vietnamese woman has been announced as the oldest living person, local officials say.

Nguyen Thu Tru lives in Ho Chi Minh City with her youngest Nguyen son, who is Thu Tru 72. She had 11 children, four of whom are still alive. “We have sufficient evidence that proves Tru was born on May 4, 1893, such as documents granted by French authorities, by the Republic of South Vietnam and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam,” said Le Tran Truong An, director of the Vietnam Guinness Book Centre.

Identification ‘to take months’

By Julian Drape A refrigerated train carrying the remains of Australian and other victims of downed Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 has arrived in Kharkiv amid tight security.

The safe arrival of the bodies in Ukraine’s second-biggest city marks the beginning of Operation Bring Them Home.

The first remains are now expected to be flown to the Dutch city of Eindhoven today.

The refrigerated train, which had travelled from the rebel village of Torez, was taken to the Malyshev military plant just southeast of Kharkiv’s city centre.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte subsequently announced the first group of MH17 victims would be flown today

to the Netherlands, where their identification could take months.

“Preparations will be made in Kharkiv so that identification can be done in the Netherlands as well as possible,” Mr Rutte said.

“As soon as a victim is identified, first and foremost, the family will be informed and no one else. That can take weeks or months.”

Outside the guarded Malyshev complex, there were intense discussions between Dutch officials and members of the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART).

The Dutch, who are leading the identification and crash investigation missions, weren’t able to allow all of the SMART team members into the con-

trolled area. Just 20 were granted access.

All journalists have been banned from entering the restricted zone, too. One Malaysian reporter told AAP: “Why haven’t they let us in?”

“It is out plane - we have to show the Malaysian prime minister.”

Dutch forensic specialists are aware they have a huge task ahead of them.

A spokeswoman said some of the remains could have to be repacked before being flown to the Netherlands. The bodies are also expected to be put through security scans.

Malaysian investigators have taken possession of the two black boxes from the flight, which will shed light on cockpit conversations and flight data in MH17’s final moments.

Up to 39 Australian citizens and residents were among the 298 people killed when MH17 was downed, likely by a missile fired by Russia-backed separatists.

The Netherlands lost almost 200 people on MH17.

The transfer of the bodies in Kharkiv is expected to be observed by Australia’s ambassador to Ukraine, Jean Dunn, and a defence attache from London.

Two other Australian consular officials are later expected to travel with the Australian bodies to Eindhoven.

The plane will likely be greeted there by Australia’s ambassador to the Netherlands, Neil Mules, and a defence attache from The Hague.

In Holland, forensic experts from Australia will assist in the identification process. - AAP

Queen’s Gold Cup winner fails drug test A horse owned by the Queen which won one of England’s most prestigious races has failed a drugs test, Buckingham Palace says.

Estimate, which lifted the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in 2013 and came second in this year’s edition, has tested positive for morphine, a banned substance.

A statement issued by the Queen’s racing adviser said ini-

tial indications were the positive test had resulted from the “consumption of a contaminated feed product”.

The Queen, renowned for a love and knowledge of racing which dates to the 88-year-old monarch’s childhood, cheered on Estimate when the filly won at Ascot last year.

A statement by John Warren, the Queen’s bloodstock and racing adviser, said: “On Thursday

July 17 the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) announced that a number of post-race samples, obtained from recent race meetings, had been found to indicate the presence of morphine, which is a prohibited substance on race days.

“Five horses, under the care of various trainers, were affected.

“I can confirm that one of those horses was Estimate, the

five-year-old filly trained by Sir Michael Stoute and owned by The Queen.

“Initial indications are that the positive test resulted from the consumption of a contaminated feed product. Sir Michael is working closely with the feed company involved to discover how the product may have become contaminated prior to delivery to his stables.

The Israeli army has confirmed that a soldier who Hamas militants claimed they had kidnapped is dead and his body remains unaccounted for. The army named the soldier, whose body is still missing, as Oron Shaul, two days after Hamas said they had kidnapped an Israeli soldier of the same name. A spokeswoman said Israeli pathologists had identified 12 out of 13 soldiers killed in Gaza over the weekend but that 21-year-old Shaul’s body was still unaccounted for. Publication of the name suggested Hamas was likely to be holding the soldier’s remains.

Alleged gang rape Sri Lankan police are investigating the alleged gang-rape of an 11-year-old girl by seven sailors in the island’s former war zone. The victim, who cannot be identified according to Sri Lankan laws, was repeatedly raped by more than one man, police spokesman Ajith Rohana said yesterday. He said she alleged that sailors from a base in the Jaffna peninsula in the north had attacked her. The sailors were arrested but freed on bail.

Bags of body parts Tanzanian police say they had arrested eight people after 85 bags stuffed with human body parts including limbs, fingers and skulls were found dumped in a landfill. The black bin bags were discovered in a suburb of the commercial capital Dar es Salaam.

“We have arrested eight suspects in connection with the 85 bags found in Kinondoni area of Dar es Salaam,” city police chief Suleiman Kova said yesterday.

Against violence Mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik now renounces violence, his lawyer has said as Norway commemorated the third anniversary of the massacre in which he killed 77 people.

Breivik, 35, “has now become very clear that he doesn’t support violence and that he doesn’t encourage others to carry out violent acts”, his lawyer Tor Jordet said yesterday, but declined to elaborate. Breivik is serving 21 years in prison, which could be extended indefinitely as long as he is still considered a threat to society.

“This is not a decision we have taken lightly and we are working through a consultation process with our people around the proposal,” he said.

Staff members gathered at the Kingsgate Hotel in Hamilton yesterday and were told the plant was running below capacity and that changes were needed.

media, citing confidentiality agreements. Spurway said a formal consultation with staff would likely begin next week and expected the proposed changes to be enacted by late next month or early September.

Fonterra employs around 2000 people in the Waikato and has invested more than $150 million in the area in the past three years.

Earlier this month, Danone said it was mulling its next move after its legal action against Fonterra was put on hold, with the High Court saying arbitration in Singapore should happen first.

Xero chairman Chris Liddell said market factors were another matter Xero had to consider which the company had no control over.

“As our business continues to develop, a logical step for Xero would see us list on a US exchange,” Liddell said.

“While this will be dependent on internal and external conditions at the time, this would be a significant milestone in becoming a truly global company,” he said.

“We should all be proud that Xero, as a New Zealand company, is playing on the international stage at this level.”

Drury said a listing would be more about getting exposure for Xero’s brand than raising money.

Xero in May this year passed $100 million in annualised sub-

scription revenue for the first time. The company had 334,000 customers, Drury said in his presentation, up 50,000 from March 31 this year.

Xero had 870 staff, up from 758 at March 31. The company had hired 390 people in the past year.

At March 31 the company had 18,000 US customers, less than 1 per cent of the 29 million small businesses in that country.

Xero’s biggest market segment is Australia where, at March 31, it had 109,000 customers or a 5 per cent share of small businesses.

In Britain Drury said the company was already a leading cloud accounting provider.

In this country Xero had 102,000 customers at March 31, about 23 per cent of the small business market.

Xero shares closed down 41c yesterday at $23.50.

Xero eyes US stock exchange listing Software company Xero will get to a position this financial year where it can make a listing on a US stock exchange “when the timing is deemed right”, says chief executive Rod Drury.

The cloud-accounting software company was forecasting subscription revenue growth of 80 per cent for this financial year, Drury said yesterday.

“This is on a constant dollar basis,” Drury said.

This is similar to the targets the company predicted and met in the 2014 financial year. Subscription revenue was $66.6 million in the year ended March 31, up 84 per cent.

Xero held its annual meeting in Wellington yesterday and released its presentations for this to the New Zealand stock exchange.

“During the year we will pass through US$100 million in annualised committed monthly revenue positioning us for a US listing when the timing is deemed right,” Drury said in the presentation.

Asked if a listing could happen during this financial year, Drury said the timing was more likely to be right after this period but possibly in the 2015 calendar year.

He said the company had not decided on its preferred exchange.

“Now we’ve sort of said that we are considering if we can

centrate recall triggered by a botulism scare.

It put the cost of the recall at €350 million when it revealed its third-quarter results last year but in its court action it alleges projected costs and lost sales will total €630 million, According to its website, Canpac produces enough cans per year to stretch, end-to-end, from London to Los Angeles. Up to 40 truck or rail loads of freight depart the site every day.

Most of Canpac’s output is exported to China and greater Asia, but it also produces lines for New Zealand/Australia/ Pacific (14 per cent), the Americas (8 per cent) and Japan (2 per cent).

Units in the NZX-listed Fonterra Shareholders’ Fund last traded at $5.97, down 2c from Tuesday’s closing level.

Fonterra is looking at laying off up to 110 workers at its Canpac packing operation, near Hamilton, partly in response to last year’s botulism scare and to tighter quality control conditions imposed by China on formula imports.

Canpac is Fonterra’s largest secondary packager of milk powders, supplying branded nutritional powders, bulk blended nutritional milk powders, cans and can components. Fonterra offers contract infant formula manufacturing services at its Canpac plant, which employs 330 people.

Fonterra is looking at making Canpac a 24-hour-a day, Monday to Friday, operation, instead of the current seven day a week, 24-hour a day roster.

Last August, Fonterra issued

an alert concerning a possible botulism-causing contamination of ingredients supplied to Danone and other customers.

Additional tests later revealed that it was a false alarm, causing Danone and others millions of dollars in product recall costs.

In January, Danone terminated its supply contract with Fonterra.

A Fonterra spokeswoman said Danone’s move had played a part in decision to scale back Canpac.

“Yes, obviously Danone had an impact, but also changes to the Chinese market access conditions have affected some of the third party manufacturers as well,” she said.

“It (the scare) played a role, but it’s not been the major part of it,” she said.

Sheep, beef farmers feeling

Mid Canterbury sheep and beef farmers are quietly optimistic heading into spring.

Federated Farmers provincial president Chris Allen said it had been a challenging autumn, but soil moisture levels had declined and to date it had been a favourable winter.

Lambing is well under way on the coastal belt and grass growth has been reasonable.

“There appears to be plenty of feed around, but some of the winter feed crops haven’t fed out as well as was hoped,” Mr Allen said.

“The crops look good but the yield has been down – that’s a direct reflection on the lack of sunshine hours last summer, which we don’t expect in Mid Canterbury.

“At this stage the stock is in good condition and we are looking forward to prices steadily improving. The challenge now is the strong dollar which is taking the advantage out of having a better schedule overseas.”

Mr Allen said there was yet to be a resurgence in the sheep industry, but the tide may be about to turn.

“There hasn’t been a marked turnaround in interest in sheep farming, but it only takes a correction in one industry’s prices, in this instance dairying, and that can change.

“No doubt dairy support will be affected by a slightly lower payout, if it is reflected in the payout.

“Some people might decide to look at lambs – or beef, which is

pretty good at the moment and looking quite positive internationally.”

Strong interest from China in both sheep and beef meat was driving prices up, Mr Allen said.

“They want good quality sheep meat that’s what we’ve needed to stabilise prices.

“The Chinese have been there at the right time, as long as we don’t become too reliant on the

market that’s my only caution.

“I believe large volumes of our beef are starting to head that way too. I was talking to the Aussie Federated Farmers recently, and they were really

upbeat about the Chinese market for beef.”

A line of store lambs peaked at $91 a head, with the average price sitting at $80.

Prices and sales continue to rise in the rural real estate sector, but the trend is reversed when it comes to dairy farms, as the fallout from slumping global commodity prices kicks in.

Figures released this week by the Real Estate Institute (REINZ) showed the 544 farm sales over the three months to June were up nearly 15 per cent on the same period a year ago.

More than 1900 farms sold over the year, representing 27.4 per cent increase.

The median price for all farms rose to $26,612 per hectare, an increase of 35 per cent last year, and a 6.4 per cent lift on the three months to May this

year. “Sales volumes and prices for the three-month period to June reflect the trends shown in the overall market in recent months,” REINZ rural spokesman Brian Peacocke said.

“While the figures for the 12month period show a strong lift, from a monthly perspective, evidence suggests steady incremental increases rather than dramatic surges.”

He said farmers were gauging the potential impact on the forthcoming sales season as a result of clear signals regarding a possible reduction in incomes from the mix of lower product prices, rising interest rates and the very strong New Zealand dollar.

This showed up in dairy farm

sales, which slumped from 95 to 69 between May and June.

However, dairy farm median prices were $33,543 per hectare, on par with May and well up on the $29,555 price tag a year ago.

The Reinz Dairy Farm Price Index, which adjusts for farm size and location as well as price, rose by 5.2 per cent from May and 12.5 per cent compared to June last year.

Overall, nine regions recorded higher farm sales than a year ago, with the largest increase in Bay of Plenty, up 27 sales, followed by Otago and Northland.

Congratulations to all. A team from Chertsey/Pendarves WI were the winners of the afternoon Quizco. Seventeen teams participated, including visiting team Canterbury East who gained second place.

Don’t forget the bowls competition for Mid Canterbury federation play-off is on August 25 at McNally Stadium at 10am with a cuppa at 9.30am. BYO lunch.

Discovering those pearls of wisdom T

he arrival of Beaded Wheels magazine is always welcome and the June/July 2014 edition was no exception.

Beaded Wheels is published every two months, and the only scary thing about receiving the latest edition is that it doesn’t seem like two months since the last one came out.

Time flies!!

A letter in the “Mailbag” – “Letters to the Editor” – was amongst the many interesting items which caught my attention this time round.

Brian Wood submitted a photograph which appeared in the June 1954 issue of Modern Motoring.

It’s a photo of a car built by his father the late Reg Wood.

With assistance from his three sons it took Reg Wood three years to manufacture the car in the back yard of their home in Riccarton.

The chassis was based on three Essex frames.

Brian says from time to time he and his brothers often wondered what became of the car after it was sold, possibly in the 1970s.

The family have written to Beaded Wheels in case any readers have information about this unique and unusual car.

With the passage of time memories sometimes change. I hasten to add for some of us!

My navigator tells me, and she who must be obeyed is probably correct, that I’m in that category.

I may well be dreaming, but then again I may not.

Funnily enough the shape and construction of the roof and the sloping side mounted aerial keep swirling around in the mists of memory.

I’m sure I sometimes saw a car like this in our Hampstead neighbourhood years ago.

I’m planning to contact Brian Wood, but before I do it would be interesting to know if any of our readers can shed any light on this.

The aforementioned naviga-

tor recently gave me another magazine to read.

Classic Driver always provides a good read.

In this copy editor Tony Haycock refers to a little light reading – The Gentleman’s Guide to Motoring.

Tony had seen the book, published in England by the AA, years ago at a friend’s home in Frankfurt.

He says when he saw a copy at a book stall here in New Zealand he was quite amazed and simply had to have it.

Glad about that because he has shared some of the pearls of wisdom the book contains.

These include: A gentleman motorist recognises only two speeds – moderate tootle and a fair old tick.

Never venture behind the wheel of a car unless in suitable attire accompanied with goggles

and a pipe. It is impossible for a gentleman motorist to wear too much tweed.

Always greet members of the Constabulary with distant respect and avoid endearments such as “My dear fellow” or “Me old china”.

Treat fellow motorists with utmost courtesy even if most of them are hapless fools.

A gentleman’s motto is “I doff, therefore I am.”

Tony says should he happen upon his good readers while motoring he will be checking they are doing their best to live up to these standards!

The obviously very amusing book contains much other useful advice as well.

It was probably obvious to Steve Devereux and Roger Hart from my vacant expression, I was not entirely sure what they were talking about when they mentioned the famous, or maybe infamous, Benelli which was the first company vehicle owned by this newspaper.

Since then it has been explained the Benelli is an Italian motor scooter.

Some, but certainly not all, of the staff ’s exploits with the company vehicle have also been mentioned.

“A “Trade Me” report is a regular feature of the Micro Car Club’s newsletter.

The Benelli described as complete but not entirely original and not running - exceeded its reserve by a whopping 62 per cent. Mind you the reserve was just $50 – it sold for $81.

Amazing isn’t it – one hears or sees something for the first time, and then all of a sudden they are everywhere!

Derek Wilson a long time motoring enthusiast and may I add former classmate (which means he’s not a long, longtime motoring enthusiast) is a keen supporter of Formula Ford racing.

Formula Ford racing provides an opportunity for newcomers, especially young people, maybe with go kart experience to get into the excitement that motorsport provides.

Derek says the Formula Ford class is a great way for anyone to enjoy motorsport.

The club actively encourages people wanting to experience motor racing, and with this in mind is staging a Formula Ford drive day at Ruapuna today.

We are looking forward to reporting on this innovative event.

aguar has extended its support as an Innovation Partner to Team Sky by designing, engineering and building a bespoke F-TYPE Coupé high performance support vehicle for the team to use during Stage 20 of the race.

Stage 20 of the 2014 Tour de France will see riders traverse from Bergerac to Périgueux.

Development of this bespoke F-TYPE Coupé by Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations follows the successful launch of the Jaguar F-TYPE R Coupé - the most dynamically capable, performance-focused production car Jaguar has ever built, which went on sale worldwide earlier this year.

This unique F-TYPE concept vehicle is based on the F-TYPE R Coupé and will be supplied with the same 550PS/680Nm 5.0-litre V8 supercharged engine.

Jaguar does not plan to place into series

production any version of this unique FTYPE Coupé. Engineers working in the new Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations team were briefed specifically to develop one vehicle for Team Sky, and this exciting version of the F-TYPE sports car is now set to support some of the Team Sky riders on Saturday July 26 during the time trial (TT).

Bespoke features include a new racking solution, which carries two of the team’s Pinarello Bolide TT bikes.

The vehicle exterior is finished in Team Sky’s famous livery, with colour ways and other Team Sky graphic design features also present inside the car.

Further specifications include a separate electric supply in the boot which provides power to the radios, amplifiers, microphones, horns and televisions which support communications between Team Sky’s Sports Director and the rider.

“The visual impact of the F-TYPE Coupé during Stage 20 will also of course bring added attention to Team Sky and our unique partnership”

Adams to carry NZ flag

By Kris shannon Shot putter Valerie Adams has been spending some extra time at the gym in preparation for her role as New Zealand’s flag bearer for the Commonwealth Games’ opening ceremony.

Adams was this morning (NZT) awarded the honour at a team function inside the majestic Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, following in the footsteps of the likes of Sarah Ulmer (2002), Hamish Carter (2006) and Irene van Dyk (2010).

More than 300 athletes, coaches and officials gathered for the announcement, with Adams being draped in a New Zealand flag by chef de mission Rob Waddell.

The defending Commonwealth, Olympic and World Champion will now lead the New Zealand team into Celtic Park at tomorrow’s opening ceremony - a role for which she has put in a little extra preparation.

“I’m just going to try and enjoy the moment as much as possible,” she said. “But one thing’s for sure - I worked out yesterday, I’m going to work out tomorrow morning at the gym and make sure I fly that flag nice and high.

“I think the most important thing is representing that silver fern with pride. Black is such an amazing colour. We look so smart and you can spot us from a mile away, so it will be great to see that sea of black coming in.”

Adams, unbeaten in 53 competitions heading into the Games, revealed she learned the good news from Waddell through a phone call some two months ago, keeping the secret from everyone but her sister, partner and manager.

Valerie Adams will carry the New Zealand flag at the Commonwealth Games’ opening ceremony.

“Just a couple of really close people, who actually changed their flights and bought tickets for tomorrow night. So I’m actually quite excited.”

“The Commonwealth Games is a special event and it’s going to be so exciting for myself and my teammates to be part of the opening,” she said.

“I’m very honoured and humbled to be leading New Zealand in with our flag.”

That pride, her impeccable record and role as a leader within the New Zealand team made Adams an obvious choice as far as Waddell was concerned.

“Valerie is arguably New Zealand’s greatest sportsperson

and a true inspiration, especially to young people,” he said.

“Not only is she an outstanding athlete, she’s also an outstanding New Zealander.

“While competing at the highest level, she works with young athletes and spends considerable time with children, encouraging them to succeed.”

Along with her unbeaten streak, Adams also has two Olympic gold medals, two Commonwealth gold medals and four successive world titles to her name. She is the hottest of favourites in the shot put but, unflappable as always, Adams sees that pressure as merely a driving force to continue

her dominance.

“It’s been four years that I’ve been unbeaten now and the pressure’s still there but the motivation’s still there to do well,” she said.

“I know that I am the hunted now and people try to hunt me down and beat me. But until that day comes, I’m going to enjoy it and I’m going to bust a nut to make sure I stay on top for as long as possible.”

Adams is the 10th track and field athlete to be named flag bearer.

The last to do so was discus thrower Robin Tait at the 1982 Brisbane Games.

Warriors not desperate enough - Townsend Warriors five-eighth Chad Townsend says they need to improve their defensive mind-set and show greater desperation when they take on the tabletopping Manly Sea Eagles at Mt Smart Stadium on Sunday.

Townsend was critical of the Warriors’ lack of intensity in their 28-22 loss to the Brisbane Broncos last Saturday, and believes they let their standards drop after a good run in which

Some prospective buyers were looking at the possibility of keeping the track while developing around it, he said. The Wellington Phoenix brought professional football back to Auckland with a bang last night, beating English Premier League side West Ham United 2-1 at Eden Park. Set to break records Manchester United are prepared to break transfer records to give new manager Louis van Gaal the players he wants, according to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward. The English giants have already spent more than £50 million ($NZ98 million) on England left-back Luke Shaw and Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera, and Woodward says they are ready to spend even more. Some rivals have spent big recently. Real Madrid this week signed James Rodriguez from Monaco for around £63 million, while Barcelona paid Liverpool about £75 million for Luis Suarez. Wallabies debut?

Fiji-born winger Henry Speight’s worth to Australian rugby has been highlighted by immediate inclusion in the Wallabies squad for the upcoming Rugby Championship.

Despite being unavailable for the opening half Australia’s campaign, including the first two Bledisloe Cup matches, Speight is one of two specialist wingers in the 32man squad. The in-form Brumbies flyer won’t be eligible to play for the Wallabies until September 11, which will end a frustrating 12-month wait to play test rugby.

Williamson’s action ‘illegal’

By Dylan Cleaver Kane Williamson has scored an unwanted first, becoming the first New Zealander to be suspended from bowling because of an illegal action.

Williamson’s action was assessed at Cardiff Metropolitan University and his elbow extension was deemed to have exceeded the 15 degrees of tolerance permitted under ICC regulations.

The off-spinner will have to modify his action and prove to assessors its legality before he can bowl again.

Williamson’s bowling is strictly the second string to his bow, but he has developed a reputation for chiming in with useful, partnership-breaking wickets.

He was reported by umpires and the match referee during the second test between the West Indies and New Zealand at Port of Spain in June.

He was able to continue bowling during that tour.

Williamson, who is enjoying a stint of county cricket with Yorkshire, said he aimed to return to the bowling crease.

“I note the findings of Dr Craig Ranson and his team at

New Zealand cricketer Kane Williamson has been suspended from bowling because of an illegal action.

Cardiff Met and will concentrate on changing whatever’s necessary to return to the bowling crease,” Williamson said in a release.

“Clearly, the onus is on me to satisfy assessors as to the legal-

ity of my action, and I’m aware I have some hard work in front of me to achieve that goal. It’s never nice, going through this sort of process but it will be worth it if I can manage to bowl again at international level.”

Williamson’s case is a curious one in that he does not possess a “doosra” or mystery ball, which is the delivery that has caused lawmakers the most conniptions. The doosra is a leg break delivered with an off break ac-

tion, best practised by Pakistan’s Saeed Ajmal.

The are many opponents of the delivery, believing it cannot be bowled with a legal action.

Williamson’s issue is bowling the conventional offspinner.

There have long been mutterings about his action and references to the fact he always bowled with buttoned down sleeves _ a common tactic to make it more difficult to tell with the naked eye whether the elbow was bending more than 15 degrees.

New Zealand coach Mike Hesson was hopeful Williamson would play a further role at the bowling crease.

“Kane’s disappointed, clearly _ anyone in his situation would feel the same way,” said Hesson. “He now has a challenge on his hands if he’s to bowl again at the top level, but we’re very hopeful he can manage it.”

The West Indies Shane Shillingford and Sri Lanka’s Sachithra Senanayake are offspinner’s who have been recently suspended by the ICC. Williamson has taken 24 test wickets at an average of 40.66.

In ODIS he has 23 at 30.91 with an economy rate of 5.49.

Crusaders set to fight fire with fire

By PatriCk MCkenDry The Sharks swept the Highlanders before them in their qualifier by virtue of their powerful scrum but it is an area that the Crusaders, who possess their own heavy artillery, are likely to target in their semifinal.

Jake White’s men will know they will be in for a tougher night up front in Christchurch on Saturday than they experienced in Durban last weekend.

The Highlanders’ pack retreated time and again at Kings Park; a repeat of their faults of a week earlier at AMI Stadium. In the end it is what cost them a place in the semifinals.

The Sharks will be aware of the power that Wyatt Crockett, Owen Franks, Sam Whitelock and Dominic Bird can provide within the framework of a technically excellent set piece, but will still probably back themselves to come out on top. It is a challenge that the genial Crockett will relish, the playoff a repeat of the 2011 qualifier in Nelson which the Crusaders won 36-8 when the 31-year-old marked du Plessis and then sat beside him on the flight to South

Africa – the Crusaders heading to Cape Town for their semifinal, which they won, the Sharks heading home with their season over.

Crockett is a player of rare skill for the Crusaders. Very tall for a prop – at 1.93m he is the same height as No8 Kieran Read – he has ball skills, a high workrate, and perhaps most remarkably, vision. It was his piece of quick thinking in the roundrobin match against the Reds at

Suncorp Stadium in May when he scored from a quick penalty tap close to the line which opened the floodgates in a 57-29 victory.

Du Plessis, also 31, plays a tighter role for the Sharks – he had what would have been his first Super Rugby try in more than 100 matches ruled out for a double movement against the Highlanders.

After several nights of subzero temperatures in Christchurch, the weather is expected to warm slightly in time for the match with an expected overnight high of zero. Those conditions, the sudden death nature of the contest, and the strengths of the two teams, suggest it will be an armwrestle of a match.

The Sharks will be hoping it is – just as it was during their round-robin victory in the city two months ago. In that case it was the Crusaders who didn’t have a Plan B, but with the likes of Kieran Read and Dan Carter back, they have more attacking threats this time.

Ashburton Electronic Organ and Keyboard Club July club night Yours truly played in this time. On a very, very cold night, to a boisterous indoor crowd.

Few vacant seats though, bit of the flu around.

Lorraine, our new President welcomed all, and left her namesake, Lorraine (Boud) to introduce the evening programme.

Rose and Audrey set the scene with three rollicking piano duets. “Goodbye friend” “Trish trash’ and “Champagne Charlie.” Nice one girls.

Then Wow! There was Yvonne Cherry up there to play for us. Welcome Yvonne.

And she didn’t disappoint. “The little Irish girl’ “Memories” from Cats were two, and finally the score came out for “I dreamed a dream” from La Mis. Lovely.

Irene and Bev (French) on piano and accordion. Nice to see different ones pairing up. We are so busy it’s hard to get together for practices. Irene looked quite at home with her older Maestro 111 button accordion. How versatile is that.

“The donut song” was a blast from the past. Then Bev Winter on her Yamaha 950. A really varied medley of every kind of song. Gee there’s some nice songs around. Well done Bev. I can’t master “Nola” but I’ve tried.

The Grey Lads completed the evening’s line up with a really entertaining set of medleys. We got Jazz, Dixie, and Dance.

John Davis on keyboard, Geordie Robinson on guitar, Alan McQuarters on trombone, and Dowell Peterson on sax. Wow! That took us into supper. Served by: Don and Joy, Judith and Trevor.

Raffles were won by: Michael, Ann Begbie, Bev Winter, Teresa O’Connell, and Bev French.

Ashburton Savage Club Our third korero (concert) for the season was held in the Savage Club Hall on Tuesday evening July 22.

Although Winter’s fangs were out & biting, the hall and atmosphere, were warm and friendly, to the members and visitors attending.

Local basketballers in good form Over the school holidays Basketball Mid Canterbury under 13 teams attended a tournament hosted by North Otago in Oamaru.

Four teams attended, two boys and two girls. There was two sections in each, BBMC having a team in each grade.

The girls’ development team lost their first game to the local team but won the next two pool games convincingly.

This set them up for a final with the local team which was a tough game

Grey Power Ashburton Inc On Monday July 21 Grey Power Ashburton held their monthly general meeting at the Seniors Centre. President Ruth Thomas welcomed approx 50 members.

Rakaia Garden Club Our July meeting was held on the 14th on a very cold afternoon. Special thanks go to Pam Dolan for getting to the room in the morning and putting the heaters on for us. It was very much appreciated.

We had a short meeting and then our speaker for the meeting was Katheryn Millar who spoke about rhododendrons.

BY DAVID LEGGAT New Zealand’s crack team sprint trio aren’t contemplating anything other than victory on the opening night of the track cycling programme early tomorrow (NZ time).

It says something for their strength of purpose that their minds are utterly locked in on one thing. Defeat is damn near inconceivable.

It comes at least partly from winning the world title in Colombia this year but also from a track programme in which the pursuit of excellence is espoused as the only aspiration.

Aucklanders Ethan Mitchell, Sam Webster and burly Southlander Eddie Dawkins – who will ride in that order tomorrow – have been together for the last three world champs, each time moving one step up the rung in crossing the line.

Colombia produced a feeling they don’t want to lose.

“We are going out to win gold, there’s no hiding that at all,” Mitchell said.

“We don’t really think about anything but the gold. Each training session is about striving for that.”

Should what they would call the unthinkable happen – remember the invariably competitive Australians are no slouches – so be it.

“If we get beaten by a better team on the day, that’s sport,” Mitchell said.

“There’s a lot of athletes get beaten on the day and you deal with that however you have to.”

It’s fair to say, however, they haven’t dwelt much on that scenario.

These are big Games for the track riders. High performance coach Mark Elliott has left them in no doubt that they are expected to win medals.

It’s likely many will. New Zealand won nine at New Delhi four years ago and this is a programme which has delivered high quality for some time now.

The days of turning up to compete are gathering dust.

Mitchell was in New Delhi as one of two 18-year-olds in the group, Webster being the other. They have come a long

way. While it would be easy to envisage the Colombian victory giving them a massive jolt of self-belief, Mitchell suggested the previous year, when they qualified top but were pipped by the Germans, as being just as critical.

“That gave us a little bit of a wake up call, that actually we were quite competitive rather than just going along to compete. Now there’s definitely more self-belief going into races.”

Their build-up has been solid; all the boxes have been ticked. There’s nothing left but to do the business tomorrow.

New Zealand’s team pursuit hit the Chris Hoy Velodrome

in the opening day’s other action. The quartet of Dylan Kennett, Pieter Bulling, Marc Ryan and Shane Archbold need a silver to match the New Delhi result. With luckless Aaron Gate’s ambitions undone by untimely injury, Archbold steps in.

A bronze was won at the worlds. They are right in the frame.

So two medals will be expected on the first night of finals at what will be a packed velodrome.

That would also serve the useful purpose of laying the groundwork for what BikeNZ anticipate could be a bumper four days of medal gathering.

Sport National honour for local netballer Ashburton netballer Sophie Worsfold made the New Zealand under 17 netball tournament selection.

Sophie Worsfold had the honour of having her name read out in the New Zealand under 17 netball tournament selection, but wasn’t there to hear it.

“We left straight away after the final and before the prizegiving because we knew our team wasn’t getting anything,” Worsfold said.

“It was very surprising. I had no idea.”

er missed out on hearing her name called out, having to hear the news second hand from her proud mother.

“On the way to the airport mum text me to tell me but I didn’t even know what a tournament team was until she explained it.”

There were 40 teams at the tournament, which equates to around 400 players, and Worsfold was named as one of the top 18. It was quite an honour and although surprised by the

selection, Worsfold felt she had a “good week” on court.

“I think I had a pretty good week but some days could have gone better.”

After six games in three days – in which Mid Canterbury finished 33rd - she had a rest day on Friday before suiting up again for College A in the premier netball competition – where they recorded a solid 33-14 win over Collegiate.

Girls’ High School on Wednesday in the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Supernet competition.

They then meet a resurgent Methven in the third week of the final round of premier netball on Saturday.

Both College and Methven recorded their first up wins of the final round, but for Methven it was only their third win of the season.

their win over defending premiers Celtic in round two, but their form has been inconsistent, but they will be the benefactors of more time on court than the other teams with their mid-week matches that could see them have a shot at the title they last won in 2010.

Celtic are still the team to beat and are the only team with two wins from the two weeks heading into their match with Collegiate while in the other match Hampstead have United.
