Protest against research farm sale

An Opposition-led protest against the sale of Winchmore Research Station comes after initial approval by a National Government nearly six years ago.

AgResearch’s exit from Winchmore, a research base for 72 years, leaves Mid Canterbury with little crown science in agriculture apart from a fertiliser trial.

Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon said the Government had “absolutely nothing’’ to say about the sale of another AgResearch site after protesting earlier about the restructuring of Invermay services near Dunedin.

“As existing contracts end there’s absolutely no guarantee of any further research in Mid Canterbury. It’s another example of the Government pulling funding and resources from regional areas like ours, to instead focus on the big cities.’’

Falloon said the Labour Party argued strongly two years ago in favour of retaining AgResearch sites when its MP David Clark presented a Save Invermay petition of more than 10,000 signatures.

“Invermay wasn’t even up for sale. Some of the functions were transferred to Lincoln, but the site remains. It’s incredible that politicians who protested so strongly against a restructure when in Opposition, would now say absolutely nothing about the sale of another AgResearch site.’’

However, a Government spokeswoman said the sale of the research station had been approved under a National Government in April 2013.

The spokesperson said the one piece of research being carried out at Winchmore was the longterm fertiliser trial and that would continue.

Falloon said Winchmore has been operating as a research station for more than 70 years and only last year AgResearch had signed a 30-year agreement to

further run fertiliser trials and the year before had invested in a new irrigation system.

“Fertiliser use and the effects of irrigation are two of the biggest environmental issues facing farming in New Zealand. It’s exactly the sort of research that AgResearch, our pre-eminent agricultural research organisation, should be investing in more.’’

AgResearch is selling the research site by private treaty, taking offers to the end of next month.

The farm is being subdivided into two parcels, either side of the Dromore Methven Road, with the larger block of about 247ha to be sold on the open market.

A condition of the sale is that

long-term fertiliser trials are carried on for a further 35 years. Last year the Fertiliser Association of New Zealand (FANZ) signed a 35-year lease with AgResearch to continue the trials at Winchmore.

AgResearch said it was selling the site because projects and priorities had changed in recent years with more research held on commercial farms and the focus moving to small scale intensive research.

The sale would enable it to invest in its wider research facilities and continue “driving prosperity’’ by transforming agriculture.

Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury vice president David Clark said earlier that farmers would

be disappointed by the erosion of more government funded research in farming.

The research station was established in the late 1940s for irrigation and phosphate fertiliser research for pasture and crop production as well as sheep and beef farming.

Over the years the research programme changed to include automated irrigation, crop pest control, nutrient cycling, soil physics, soil organic matter, soil biology and experimental crops.

More latterly, the focus was on the long term fertiliser trials run for more than 60 years and the longest trials of their type under pasture in New Zealand.

“If I was guilty and went out and killed two people, I’d take it, and say, ‘That was me’. But obviously that was not the case and I refute the accusation,” Tully said.

Caravan dispute dismissed A long-running case centred on the ownership of a blue and white caravan came to an end in the Ashburton District Court on Tuesday after police evidence was ruled inadmissible.

Ashburton man Harry James Mitchell, 47, had been charged with dishonestly taking a $6700 caravan, but Judge Joanna Maze dismissed the charge after hearing from three witnesses and reading previously-given evidence of a man police said owned the caravan but who had since passed away.

The police case was that caravan trader Russell Kennelly had bought the caravan then rented it back to Mitchell, but Mitchell said Kennelly had loaned him money and the caravan was his and collateral for the loan.

Mitchell was making regular payments to Kennelly in 2016 but then stopped. The caravan then went missing from a Rakaia campground in 2016 and was eventually found at an Ashburton address.

Mitchell was seen as a person of interest in the inquiry, though there was uncertainty about whether the ownership was a criminal or civil matter. He was stopped by a police officer in Methven in February, 2017, and questioned. He led police to an Eton Street address, where the caravan was located and seized.

But defence counsel Kathy Besire said police had no legal authority to stop Mitchell as he was driving near Methven in February 2017, other than for land transport issues.

Instead, Mitchell had been questioned by Constable Mike Seque about a complaint by Kennelly that the caravan had been stolen. He was not formally cautioned and police did not have a search warrant.

Mitchell was only cautioned after the caravan had been located.

She asked Judge Maze to dismiss the charge saying Seque’s evidence had been improperly obtained and should not be admissable.

The issue of ownership could then be sorted out in the civil jurisdiction between her client and Kennelly’s estate, she said.

Crown prosecutor Helen Bennett conceded there had been some negligence, but there had been a transfer of money between the complainant and defendant and other evidence.

The judge agreed that the officer’s evidence had been improperly obtained and that to allow it would encourage “bad policing methodology”.

The judge said there was still a case to answer though.

Mitchell did not give evidence.

Judge Maze said the essence of

the case was if Mitchell dishonestly and without claim of right, but not so as to be guilty of theft, took the caravan between November 1, 2016, and February 28 the following year – as charged.

And the only evidence that remained admissible or relevant was of Kennelly and a friend of Mitchell’s, who used to visit him when the caravan was parked at Glentunnel.

Judge Maze said she was uneasy about the reliability of Kennelly, given emails he presented to the

court at an earlier hearing appeared to have been manipulated.

There was also no paperwork to support the sale and purchase of the caravan in May, 2016, and he only showed as the registered owner of the caravan some five months later.

“Had it been a genuine aboveboard agreement that a businessman engaged in the exercise of buying caravans to rent out, it would have been recorded and documented.”

She said she had been unable to

conclude there had been an absence of a claim of right on Mitchell’s part and was not satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that he had acted dishonestly.

The charge was dismissed.

Mitchell’s counsel asked the caravan be returned to him; the vehicle is being held in secure storage by an auction firm. Police had released it to Kennelly and it had been advertised for sale at the end of last year.

The judge said it was best left to a civil action.

Riff Raff looking to attract more young clientele Riff Raff the reading assistance dog at Ashburton Public Library has been doing a sterling job since taking up the position about two years ago.

But he needs more children, like four-and-a-half-year-old Grace Vera, to read to him, says his owner and library manager Jill Watson.

Riff Raff is based at the library 3.30pm to 4.30pm each Tuesday, where he takes 15-minute reading appointments.

There has been a noticeable improvement in the reading ability of children who have spent quality time with the ginger norwich terrier, Watson said.

“Riff Raff is totally uncritical, so they can make mistakes, he’s not checking on them, he’s just happy to sit with them and listen.”

Pinnacles Hut upgrade urgent

Upgrading Pinnacles Hut will take place within the next two years if the Mt Somers Walkway Society gets its way.

But the Department of Conservation is not giving a timeframe for the project, saying it will take place “at some stage in the future”.

Senior ranger recreation/historic Murray Thomas said while concept plans had been developed in conjunction with the so-

ciety, the final design had yet to be confirmed.

This summer there is a new warden programme in operation, with a paid warden and team of volunteers, and visitor usage is being recorded at the hut.

“At this stage the hut is coping with the current usage,” Thomas said.

However, society chairman Barry Austin said he would ideally like to see building work begin within the next two years.

Mt Somers Track is served by

two huts – the Pinnacles Hut and Woolshed Creek Hut. Pinnacles Hut was funded and built by the public and later gifted to DOC. A hut upgrade would improve the existing facilities and increase its sleeping capacity from 19 to 26.

“We would like it done as soon as possible because the walk is getting popular,” Austin said.

“I think there’s a lot more people using the track than what they realise.”

He called into the Woolshed Creek carpark on Tuesday and there were 19 cars. Two families of five walked out of the track while he was there after a stay at Woolshed Creek Hut, which was built in 2006, replacing the previous hut built 1987.

Austin expected there would probably be another 20 cars in the carpark yesterday, with perhaps 15 at the other end at Staveley.

Rock formations around Pinnacles made it an attractive over-

night spot for climbing groups, which could stay two to three nights and leave little room for trampers.

Meanwhile, Thomas said in addition to the hut upgrade, the department was planning to upgrade the toilet at Pinnacles Hut and install a helicopter pad.

“The helicopter pad will provide additional spaces for campers near the hut. We do not have a timeframe for this work at present but hope to have approval for it later this year.”

US vote on shutdown close The US Senate has shifted slightly closer to resolving a month-long partial government shutdown, but there’s no sign of relief anytime soon for 800,000 federal workers who are furloughed or working without pay.

Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell laid the groundwork for a vote on a Democratic proposal to fund the government for three weeks, without attaching the $US5.7 billion in US-Mexico border wall funding demanded

by President Donald Trump.

The president has opposed similar legislation in the House of Representatives.

McConnell had said previously he would not consider a funding bill that Trump would refuse to sign.

The Senate leader said he would also bring up for a Thursday vote a proposal by Trump to end the shutdown that includes border wall funding and relief for “Dreamers,” people brought illegally to the United States as children.

The plan is unlikely to pass in the Senate and had even less chance in the Democratic-led House of Representatives.

PHOTO AP would not trade a temporary restoration of the immigrants’ protections from deportation in return for a permanent border wall they view as ineffective. In 2017, Trump moved to end the Dreamers’ protections, triggering a court battle.

But the Senate action could set the stage for the type of bipartisan negotiating that will be necessary to end a shutdown that began on December 22. Americans have largely blamed Trump for the shutdown, now the longest in US history.

As the Senate debates Trump’s proposal, House Democrats this week are pushing legislation that would end the partial shutdown of agencies including the departments of Justice, Homeland Security, Agriculture, Commerce, Labor and Interior.

While their legislation would contain new border security money, there would be nothing for a wall, ensuring Trump’s opposition.

Once the government reopens, Democrats said, they would negotiate with Trump

on further border security ideas.

The shutdown’s impact was being felt at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with the FBI Agents Association saying probes of possible financial crimes, drugs and terrorism were being hindered by a lack of funds.

Many federal employees and contractors were turning to unemployment assistance, food banks and other support as the shutdown entered its second month. Others began seeking new jobs.

Racially motivated violence hits Portugal Unidentified attackers have thrown petrol bombs at a police station in the Portuguese city of Setubal and torched cars in the capital Lisbon, hours after a protest against alleged racially-motivated police violence ended in clashes.

Police said in a statement that three petrol bombs caused damage to the station in the early hours of the morning but nobody was hurt. They reinforced patrols to guarantee residents’ safety.

The fire blackened the stairs and a wall of the station, but no other damage could be seen from the outside.

Police said their investigation could not establish any links to a rally held earlier in central Lisbon, which followed a police raid on a predomi-

nantly black neighbourhood in Seixal, on the outskirts of the capital south of the Tagus River.

Setubal is about 50 kilometres south of Lisbon.

Police responded to a call about a brawl between two women and entered the Jamaica neighbourhood in Seixal, where mostly young local residents greeted them with a hail of stones.

A video published on the internet showed police officers beating up several black people.

Four local residents and one police officer suffered minor injuries and were treated in hospital. One person was arrested and later released.

A young woman, who asked not to be named, told Reuters

she had filmed the incident and denied stones were thrown.

“We want justice and we hope they are charged,” she said.

Lisbon’s public prosecutor’s office said it would investigate the incident.

Julieta Luvunga, 53, who is originally from Angola and lives in the neighbourhood, said police hit her, she lost consciousness and had to be taken to hospital.

“I never thought police would hit me. We see this happening in other countries, like the United States, but I never thought it would happen here,” she told Reuters.

Rights group SOS Racismo said the police response was unjustified.

black protesters blocked Lisbon’s Avenida da Liberdade thoroughfare night, chanting “Down with racism!”

Stones were thrown at police officers who dispersed the rally.

Police said that one person was arrested on suspicion of torching four vehicles and a dozen garbage cans in greater Lisbon’s Odivelas district.

There are several poor neighbourhoods on the outskirts of Lisbon where immigrants mostly from Portugal’s African ex-colonies live.

Race-related violence is rare in Portugal but in one incident in Lisbon in 2015, 18 police officers were accused of crimes motivated by racism. Seventeen of them are now on trial.

Rodriguez cancels NZ tour Acclaimed singer/songwriter Rodriguez has been forced to cancel his upcoming tour to New Zealand due to medical restrictions. The star, who is the subject of the hit documentary Searching for Sugarman, had planned shows in Australia and New Zealand in February and March. A statement released says Rodriguez is “very upset at having to let anyone down” and apologises to everyone affected “for the inconvenience caused”. It also says Rodriguez is “looking forward to being able to return” once he is recovered and details of a new tour will be announced in due course.

Chelsea Clinton has announced her family is expanding. The 38-year-old former first daughter tweeted that she and her husband Marc are expecting another child in the summer. The couple have a daughter Charlotte born in 2014 and a son Aidan born in 2016. In a reply to congratulations on Twitter, Clinton said Hillary and Bill are thrilled. Clinton and 41-year-old investment banker Marc Mezvinsky have been married since 2010.

They live in New York. Clinton is writing another children’s book to accompany the two she’s already published. The picture book about endangered animals is slated for an April release.

OUR VIEW

The time to be careful and cautious A

s I write this on Wednesday afternoon, the rain is pouring down – so the subject matter is a bit of a moot point.

But with the weather set to rampage on at a ridiculously warm rate in the next week, it will be pertinent for days to come as the mercury rises to almost unbearable heights early into next week.

But there’s no hiding from the fact that the warmer weather which has been beating down up on us and looks set to continue to do so well into February, comes as a bit of a double-edged sword for the Ashburton District.

Warm weather at this time of

the year means the harvesters are out in force, memories of a wet lead-in to the festive season now only recognised by the damage it has done to crops, as farmers and contractors can but hope the damage isn’t too bad.

Up in rural Methven, it’s easy to tell when things are at full peak.

Stand outside on a clear and still night and you can hear the

gentle whir of machines kilometres away from in the middle of the township.

The district is alive. And it’s open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

It also brings about a return of a favourite pastime for many New Zealand families and that’s an evening swim down at the local swimming pool, or swimming hole.

A great opportunity to wash away the working day – escaping the heat and just generally unwinding, there really is nothing better than a dip to refresh the body and the mind.

There’s plenty to be positive about when the temperatures are sitting in the low-to-mid-

thirties, but it’s not without its dangers as well.

Already this week we’ve had warnings from our firefighters about the dangers of the warmer days making everything that little bit drier and the risk that it can pose when lighting fires.

Our district is usually traditionally busy around this time with fire call-outs to many, largely unavoidable, fire related incidents.

A good work out for us as summer comes to a close.

But it’s not just the fire risk that will have emergency services a little concerned.

The peak of harvest sees an ever-increasing presence of large vehicles on our rural roads

and the chance of getting impatient if stuck behind is significantly increased.

Driving around the district requires that extra level of caution from everyone.

Gateways that remain shut for months on end are now often found to be open with traffic flowing through them so the need to be aware of our surroundings when driving is critical.

So, it’s a case of being a bit more cautious and careful out there at this time of the year but it is also about making sure we get out and enjoy everything this district has to offer as well.

That’s if you can handle the heat, of course.

That’s how I have come to think about the town of my birth in recent years, good bones but a bit of a diamond in the rough, although oozing untapped potential.

Sue Newman’s recent Guardian evaluation of the mayor and councillors’ performance gave a very good insight into the current state of play. If you haven’t read it yet, you should.

Like any group of local body representatives, there are drivers and there are passengers. Mayor Favel’s description, by Newman, as being firmly in control was spot-on, along with her penchant for detail. Yes she’s a listener and a leader and as referenced, a tireless attender of anything and everything. I have to give her full marks for that. Credit where it is due. She’s big on diversity, inclusiveness and . . . various other stuff.

We run into each other from time-to-time, like the annual bowls clash between the council and media and, as happens in a small town, occasionally just “on the street”.

Our encounters are always cordial and I think she must have a jar of Jacinda’s ‘relentlessly positive’ pills stashed away at home and takes one daily. And, as Sue Newman also astutely observed, she “likes to be liked”.

Don’t we all?

or whoever else may cast their hat into the ring this year, is a fresh look at the big picture for Ashburton.

First impressions count.

How our town looks and feels.

The image that is immediately apparent to our locals and visitors as they drive through our central commercial and transit areas. The vibe of the thing. The hub. The nerve centre. The spinal cord.

Is it as good, is it as healthy and vibrant as it could or should be?

My own view is there is plenty of room for improvement.

Although Donna was quick to point out to me, the town apparently figured highly in a survey about how we feel about our parks and open spaces.

Perplexing.

Which is where I committed either a cardinal sin or an intrepid act of impulsive community caring over the holiday break.

I placed a little thing up on social media of a spontaneous clean-up I did of a long-neglected and overgrown traffic island out on the Bridge Street-Seafield Road corner and became a little overwhelmed when the thing blew up.

It touched a lot of nerves.

The Facebook page went nuts.

In fact people are still chiming in about it and it has become a little embarrassing frankly.

But it reinforced to me that many others feel the same way and I don’t think our wet highgrowth activity over the holiday break covers all the deficiencies

by any stretch. Some of this stuff is historic.

We have a thinly-stretched maintenance resource coping with an ever-expanding agenda.

The mayor, when she spoke to me by phone very congenially after the Facebook thing, was quick to point out the jeopardy in which I had placed myself by carrying out my clean-up on a busy intersection.

And pointed out how I could have inadvertently placed the council in a very difficult position if perhaps a passing sheep truck had wiped out my arseular region whilst committing my well-intentioned deed.

Okay – not her exact words granted, but you get the drift.

And that’s the sad thing now.

She is absolutely right.

They days of rolling up your sleeves and just doing a good deed in a public space are seemingly all but over. There’s potentially a myriad of compliance and paperwork and consequences to consider. It just sucks the will.

I kinda knew it might draw a bit of official stick, and comments from a multitude of passing motorists who knew exactly what I was doing and why I was doing, it backed that up.

One very pleasant woman said, “good on you, I have thought about doing that for ages but didn’t want to get into any trouble”.

My pleasure ma’am. I did it and took the heat for you.

To be fair, it wasn’t an inferno, just a reflection of the wider world we live in today. It is what it is. Times have changed. It’s not 1960 anymore. Nearly impossible to breathe now without an orange vest and a bit of signed paper.

So, I did some sums. Pride comes at a price. The pride and presentation of a town’s civic area acts as a benchmark to which its citizen can aspire. With a scrappy

town, what would you expect the overall aspiration to be?

The example needs to be set at a civic level.

So, if my ratepayer numbers are correct, fifty cents per ratepayer per week would give us in excess of $360,000 a year to up our game and give Parks and Open Spaces a fair crack at doing the job, realistically and properly.

The situation where a dude using his own mower for a huge public space at Mayfield, and others like it, could be dealt with professionally.

A solid squad of mower riders could continually trim and manicure our green areas from the southern approach to the northern approach.

Our public gardens and plantings could look vastly improved.

Some look great, but clearly the resources are not there to cover it all adequately.

But you can’t have it both ways.

You can’t boast one of the lowest-costs-per-ratepayer comparatively in the country without having the results we have lived with now for sometime.

So my hope for this year is – that this big picture, feel-good, front door stuff will suddenly get the attention it deserves and that we ratepayers will be prepared to stump up for the cost.

It could happen under a new term with our present mayor, or it could be under a whole new council comprised of Snow White and the nine dwarves.

I really don’t care who does it, as long as it is done.

You really do get what you pay for.

Dunsandel plant’s registration renewed Synlait’s registration of its Dunsandel plant has been renewed by Chinese authorities for another four years.

The registration allows the milk company to continue to export canned infant formula to China.

Paperwork was issued by the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (GACC) which took over the responsibility from a certification and accreditation body after a government restructure in March last year.

Re-registration is required every four years and included an in-depth assessment with Synlait having to prove it had robust

systems for change, pathogen and food incident management.

A three-day audit was performed at the Dunsandel site by the Ministry for Primary Industries on behalf of GACC and included a traceability exercise from raw materials to exported product.

“GACC has strict criteria overseas manufacturers must meet to maintain registration, and I’m pleased to say Synlait Dunsandel continues to meet these high standards,” said Synlait chief executive Leon Clement.

Synlait first obtained certification for canned infant formula for its Dunsandel site in 2014.

Kiwi farmers are in a strong enough position debt-wise to weather a financial storm.

Lincoln University research has found they are well-placed to survive potential financial uncertainty from major setbacks such as global warming.

University academics Bruce Greig, Peter Nuthall and Kevin Old surveyed more than 400 farmers to reach the decision that most farmers are financially strong.

Their research shows that average farm equity is nearly 82 per cent among the surveyed farmers.

Just over 60 per cent of fruit and viticulture operations have 100 per cent equity, but only 10 per cent of dairy farmers have 100 per cent equity.

Among the farms 12.8 per cent of them had at least $8 million debt and on the other side of the ledger, 12.2 per cent had an asset total of greater than $20 million.

Associate Professor Nuthall said it was “highly likely” farmers would survive most price downturns and the impacts of global warming.

He said an assessment of the financial resilience of New Zealand farms was im-

portant because changing weather patterns stemming from global warming may aggravate supply shifts. The opening of world markets through trade agreements could lead to fluctuating supply and demand and also increase price volatility.

Research results, however, showed that most farmers and their farms were in a zone of “stable functioning’’ and “could operate and absorb financial shocks at least in the short term”.

“Profit levels are not high relative to the investment, but this has been the case for decades and has not caused problems due to farmer and farm family resilience,” Nuthall said.

“This does not mean some farmers have not struggled financially, particularly over periods of low payouts, including low wool prices and periods of severe drought.

He said new farmers with high initial debt would have found it difficult to meet their commitments during these periods.

“The majority, however, have had the equity to cope, especially the significant numbers with 100 per cent equity.”

Farmers would need to continue maintaining their financial levels through prudent production system selection and good financial management, he said.

PAY LATER Wool industry takes action First Union representatives have been working with wool industry stakeholders, workers and employers for the past six months to develop a formal agreement to represent its shearers, woolhandlers and other industry employees.

Transport, Logistics and Manufacturing Division secretary Jared Abbott said union representation was needed as the industry was losing skilled workers.

“The wages had not kept up with overseas [wage] increases.

“Some employers are undercutting other employers. There is a lack of co-ordinated training, which has left huge gaps in skills and productivity, and many practices have fallen out of touch with current employment laws due to a lack of independent, pro-worker scrutiny.

“We have already signed up a number of workers and are now in talks with the first groups of employers to establish collective agreements,’’ Abbott said.

Alexandra shearing contractor Peter Lyon said union representation would be beneficial to the industry.

“It is time wool harvesting industry workers had a voice,’’ he said.

“From my point of view it is a positive move, but I worry that the people who should be members won’t be proactive enough to support it.’’

He recalled the New Zealand Workers’ Union represented industry workers in the early 1990s prior to the introduction of the Employment Contracts Act, which changed the union’s power.

“It made it easy for us as businesses as we had a multi-employer collective agreement, but after that they became individual [agreements],’’ he said.

He said a union would give contractors some direction as to what rates of pay were fair and reasonable.

One of the key industry issues was attracting young people as many preferred working in towns and there was a perception wages were lower in rural areas.

In addition, the industry needed training programmes and he would also like to see something like a national body, much like the disbanded wool board and levy reintroduced to look after the industry.

Alexandra contractor Dion Morrell said the industry needed “a voice to be part of the conversation and we need some representation around the table’’ to attract young people and retain skilled workers.

“Since there’s been no union and no voice for employees, it has been up to contractors and farmers to provide reasonable wages and a good place to work in.

“We are being outbid by Australia and [other industries] within New Zealand.

“Creating a new bottom line will encourage more people back into the industry,’’ he said.

He said he usually employed about 100 workers during the busy times and could easily do with another 30 or 40 workers or more if they were available.

New Zealand Shearing Association president Mark Barrowcliffe said the association and the union would “push forward’’ for improved work conditions and remuneration.

“It is important to look after employees as they are the industry’s tools.’’

The association had recommended a 25 per cent increase in pay and entitlements last year to gain parity with rates paid in Australia.

Inflation rate stuck in neutral New Zealand’s inflation remained stuck in neutral in the fourth quarter but economists say the data does point to some emerging cost pressure.

The Consumers Price Index rose 0.1 per cent in the three months ended December 31, taking annual inflation to 1.9 per cent, Stats NZ said.

Economists had been expecting the index would increase zero to 0.1 per cent in the three months, for an annual increase of 1.8 to 1.9.

The Reserve Bank had tipped a quarterly rise of 0.2 per cent and an annual increase of 2 per cent.

The tradables CPI, which includes goods and services that compete with international rivals, fell 0.4 per cent in the quarter and was up 0.9 per cent in the year.

Non-tradables inflation, which focuses on domestic goods and services, rose a quarterly 0.7 per cent for a 2.7 per cent annual increase. The central bank had expected the non-tradables figure to be 0.4 per cent.

“The details of the release were surprisingly strong, with non-tradable and measures of underlying inflation all lifting.

Further, price pressure looks to be spreading through the economy with price increases evident in more sectors than the usual housing-related areas,” said ASB Bank chief economist Nick Tuffley.

Tuffley said, however, “given the recent slowdown in economic growth and ongoing downside risks to the outlook, we think the RBNZ will remain patient for now.

We continue to expect the RBNZ to leave the OCR on hold until August 2020.”

Westpac Bank senior economist Michael Gordon also said “the details were actually on the hawkish side.”

However, while he expects a gradual pick up in domestic inflation pressures as the labour market tightens, “there is still some way to go before inflation tests the upper end of the target range. We expect the RBNZ to keep the OCR unchanged until late 2020.”

The central bank is mandated with keeping annual inflation between 1 and 3 per cent over the medium term, focusing on the mid-point.

ANZ senior economist Liz Kendall said the central bank will “take comfort” from the non-tradable inflation holding up “but will be vigilant that weakness in tradable inflation might flow through to inflation expectations.”

She also noted that it is “becoming increasingly apparent that economic momentum is now

Stats NZ said petrol prices fell 0.6 per cent in the quarter and were up 11.1 per cent in the year.

“The price of petrol fell continually throughout the quarter, down from highs in October,” prices senior manager Paul Pascoe said.

“By the last week of December, the pump price was 8.3 per cent below the December quarter average.”

Stats NZ said the overall 0.1 per cent quarterly lift was led by seasonal rises in international airfares, but these were largely offset by seasonal falls in the prices for vegetables.

International air transport lifted 7.6 per cent on the quarter but was down 4 per cent on the year.

Vegetables meanwhile tumbled 20.7 per cent from the prior quarter and were down 8.4 per cent on the year.

PGG Wrightson says current chair Joo Hai Lee will step down before June 28 but that the board will continue its governance review in the meantime.

Lee represents Wrightson’s former majority shareholder, Singapore-registered Agria, and took over as chair in early November after Agria principal Alan Lai abruptly resigned the day before the scheduled annual shareholders’ meeting.

Wrightson says in a statement that the board “will provide an update in the near future regarding the outcomes of the review and the chair’s appointment”.

Agria now owns 46.6 per cent of Wrightson after it was forced to sell down its previous 50.2 per cent stake by the Overseas Investment Office.

That was achieved by unwinding Ngai Tahu’s stake in a joint venture

with Agria, with the iwi now owning 3.6 per cent of Wrightson in its own right.

In January last year, the OIO confirmed it had started an investigation into Agria and Lai’s “good character” status, a condition of its Wrightson ownership. It forced the share sell-down in December after Agria and Lai reached a settlement with US regulators relating to fraudulent accounting and market manipulation.

Agria was fined $US3 million and Lai $US400,000, as well as accepting a five-year management ban, by the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

Wrightson’s statement didn’t mention the $434 million sale of the company’s seeds business to Danish co-operative DLF Seeds, which is expected to deliver Wrightson a $120 million capital gain, but

Wrightson has confirmed there has been no change to the sale’s status.

The Commerce Commission has expressed concerns about the potential concentration of power in the ryegrass seeds market which it said may allow DLF to raise prices or reduce the quality to customers.

The New Zealand Shareholders’ Association has said that the seeds sale was clearly driven by Agria’s need to reduce debt rather than by what is in shareholders’ best interests.

Last month, Wrightson said its seeds business will make a loss after tax in the six months ended December and that it has had to bail out its joint venture partner in Uruguay.

This won’t affect the seeds sale because DLF has assumed all the seeds business risks and rewards since June 30 last year, assuming the sale proceeds.

The country’s biggest fuel retailer said falling crude prices and resulting reduction in pressure on margins will enable it to deliver operating earnings of between $420 million and $450 million for the year ending March 31.

In November the firm had cut its guidance to $400-to-$435 million, citing pricing pressures.

The firm yesterday also increased its dividend forecast, citing increased December quarter earnings and a more stable outlook for crude oil prices.

Z shares have risen strongly this month and last traded at $5.81.

They are down almost 23 per cent during the past year.

Brent crude oil prices dropped more than 40 per cent late last year, from about $US86 a barrel in early October to $US51 in late December. March Brent was recently at $US61.36.

Wellington-based Z Energy said its retail and commercial fuel trading improves in a falling crude market.

Lower prices encourage retail customers to buy more fuel, with average fill volumes recently rising to the more typical 28 litres, from a low of 26 litres in the September quarter.

A one-month pricing lag on some commercial fuel sales also advantages the firm when product prices are falling.

The $10 million negative impact of rising crude prices on fuel margins that Z disclosed in its first-half earnings “has more than fully reversed” to be a positive $8 million “price lead” in the December accounts, the company said.

Z Energy said total industry fuel volumes of 2.51 billion litres in the December quarter were 5.2 per cent higher than a year earlier.

Z group sales, excluding exports and other sales to industry, increased 0.7 per cent.

Industry retail segment volumes fell 3.1 per cent in the quarter, but Z Energy said its volumes were unchanged.

The company said its commercial volumes grew in the quarter, but it lost market share in diesel and jet fuel sales.

Baked lamb shoulder chops

Serves 4 Lamb 4 Quality Mark lamb shoulder chops Vegetables 1 onion, finely chopped 1t ground ginger 1t turmeric 1/2 cinnamon stick 1 green chilli, deseeded and finely chopped 2 medium-sized carrots, peeled, halved and cut into 7cm lengths 1 1/2 C butternut pumpkin, peeled and cubed 400g can chopped tomatoes in juice 250ml beef stock 2T fresh coriander leaves, roughly chopped 2T fresh parsley leaves, roughly chopped To serve 1T fresh coriander leaves 400g steamed couscous

■ Preheat the oven to 170°C. ■ Lamb: Heat a dash of oil in a large frying pan (or use a casserole dish that can be used on the stove top), and brown lamb shoulder chops on both sides.

Transfer to a casserole dish.

■ Lower the heat, add another dash of oil to the frying pan and cook the onion until soft, at least 5 minutes, then add the ginger, turmeric, cinnamon stick and chilli. Stir and cook for 1 minute until aromatic. Add the carrots and butternut pumpkin and stir well to coat with the spice mix-

ture. Pour in the chopped tomatoes with juice and stock and bring to the boil. Stir through chopped herbs and pour over the lamb shoulder chops. Place in the oven for 1 1/2 hours until the lamb is meltingly tender.

■ To serve: Remove lamb shoulder chops from the oven, stir through the chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed couscous. Use the broth to moisten the couscous.

Club news 14 Ashburton Guardian Allenton Croquet Club Our first monthly meeting for 2019 was held on Wednesday January 16 and Club President, Ann Sunbeam, welcomed 12 members. A happy New Year was wished to everybody.

Our own Christmas lunch, held in December, was well attended and with having caterers it meant a lot less work for everybody. The Christmas cake, made by Jill McCormick, was had at afternoon tea time, very very tasty. The sports club Christmas tea was attended by quite a few of our Croquet members and was very enjoyable.

The engravers tournament was attended by eight pairs and the winners being Logan McCorkindale and Josie Tallents.

Golf croquet have completed all their champion games and assn. are nearly finished theirs.

A vote of thanks was given to Maurice Sunbeam for all the garden work he has done to have everything looking so good.

Our annual quizco has been set down tenatively for the 3rd of May 2019, at the same cost of $5 per person and tables of four, this includes supper. There will be good raffles and many prizes for participants. We will again hold our annual Easter raffle.

The next meeting is Wednesday February 13 at 3:15pm.

Ashburton Bowling Club Another busy week on the greens the weather is starting to be a bit more kind to us. Recent results from around the county for Ashburton members were at Methven in the Edna Lowe tournament Margaret Eder, Diana King, Rosemarie O’Sullivan & Heather Gray were third.

At Rakaia Diane Gutberlet, Diana King, Alison Gibbs & Shirley Maw were 4th.

In the Saturday rollovers Collin Cross & Anne Gibson were 1st.

It is not often that the opportunity to bid the maximum contract of 7 No Trumps arises, but this hand from summer Bridge offers just that.

A number of East/West partnerships bid the 7 N.T., getting there using different bidding systems.

Those using Gerbor or Blackwood to determine the Aces and Kings, did so, while those using cue bids and controls in the various suits employed that technique.

West, the dealer, will open and depending on the system being played could choose a number of options – the Precision 1 Club, showing 16 plus points and any distribution, or if playing strong 2 openings, open 2 Spades, or perhaps, a passive 1 Spade.

Whatever the system used, the 34 points between the 2 hands, coupled with the long suits, creates a real powerhouse.

East is possibly the most likely Declarer in No Trumps, West having shown both the Hearts and Spades however, either player would be equally justified in calling the No Trumps, depending on the bidding.

The two vital factors in the play of the actual cards are the communication avenues between the two hands, and the position of the Spade Q. As it happens, the Spade Q drops on the second lead of At Hinds on Saturday Alistair & Noeline Mackenzie, Leonie Spargo & Doug Kinvig were 4th in the Maddison 4’s.

Ashburton Creative Fibre Club members had an enjoyable Christmas lunch just before Christmas with finger food.

The craft market stall will resume again in March when the weather cools down.

Suggestions on ideas for the annual bus trip coming up in May would be appreciated.

It has been decided that the theme for the coming year will be flowers in wool and the challenge will be the processing a raw fleece into garments by either individuals or groups to be finished by next February. Photos of the process would be appreciated.

There is a knitting flowers and spinning troubleshooting workshop coming up February 20/21, sign up if interested.

Ashburton Golf Club Wendy and Eric Parr both set down good markers before the shootout fi-

nal by combining well together to pick up the AC Browne Trophy with a great Canadian foursome score of 64.5. Well when I say combined well, I actually mean Eric just did as he was told, well done and well deserved.

The men’s pair winners for the Smith salver were Chris Ralston and Greg Fleming who obviously played in masks and striped jumpers as they burgled their way to a 61.

It seems the morning golfers had the best of it again with the top four men’s scores coming in before noon, while the rest of us honest afternoon golfers struggled and sweated in the blistering conditions, talk about mad dogs and Englishmen.

This Saturday we have the Men’s Opening day playing pairs best ball for the Jim McKenzie Trophy, normal start times, come along and join in the fun.

On Sunday we have the big race with the ninth running of the Property Brokers Shootout Final. Runners are asked to report to the parade ring at 9.30am well groomed, so they can strut their stuff and try to intimidate the other runners.

The flag will go up at 10am with the race, this year being MC’d by Nutts ably assisted by Terry K and Paul Greer.

The greens will be run by Perry and Arkwright, and any other help to count shots would be greatly appreciated.

The day is always a spectacle and great fun, all the horses have been sold, but some of us did have to buy ourselves to avoid the embarrassment of being left on the shelf.

Wander along anytime Sunday we normally get to the final four stage around 3.45 and finish about 4.30.

We will have a drinks cart with a couple of lovely ladies selling beverages and sammies to keep everyone moving, should be a great day.

Osaka lines up for second grand slam Just a few months ago Japan’s Naomi Osaka would have happily settled for being a grand slam semi-finalist.

But after her breakthrough US Open title and sweeping past Elina Svitolina to reach the final four at Melbourne Park on esterday, Osaka says only the Australian Open crown will do.

The 21-year-old will next take on Karolina Pliskova today after the Czech saved four match points to oust seven-times champion Serena Williams 6-4 4-6 7-5 in a quarter-final cliffhanger.

That result mean there’s no repeat of an Osaka-Williams US Open final, when the American had a fiery meltdown at the chair umpire.

Osaka had a far easier ride against sixth-seeded SvitoliNaomi na, blasting her way through 6-4 6-1 in just over an hour on Rod Laver Arena.

Both players faltered on serve in the first set before Osaka settled into the match and stormed ahead.

The Ukrainian, who the WTA Finals title late last year, sought treatment for a neck injury midway through the second set but Osaka was already well on top.

Osaka said winning her US Open title had given her hunger for more success.

“I’m not really satisfied – like, I am happy that I’m here but at the same time I want to keep going,” Osaka said.

“I know that a few months ago I would have given anything to be in the semi-finals of a slam but it’s like this weird feeling that you want to do the next big thing.

“And especially now that I won a grand slam, and I feel like I want to win another one and I’m so close and I just want to keep going.”

Osaka said she tried to work on keeping her focus after been taken to three sets in her last two matches because she played better when she was calm.

She only lost her cool once during the Svitolina match when she led the first set Osaka 5-4, 0-40 but needed four set points to break her opponent to wrap it up.

“I feel like I play better when I’m calm – when I’m not calm, it just makes my life harder,” said Osaka.

“There is an inner peace I can tap into sometimes during my matches, and it’s kind of hard to get to, but once I’m there, it’s really easy.

“Not easy, but nothing can really bother me. So that’s just something that I’m trying to learn how to do consistently.”

Methven duo taste success

Warner out for a month David Warner will likely be fit to return to Australian duties when his 12-month ban is lifted at the end of March, despite elbow surgery. Warner went under the knife in Melbourne on Tuesday to remove a bone spur and loose piece of bone in his right elbow that were causing inflammation in the joint while playing in the Bangladesh Premier League. It’s expected he will be able to begin moving his arm by the end of the week and resume batting within a month before returning to the middle.

Warner’s elbow injury was not considered as serious as suspended ex-captain Steve Smith’s, who underwent surgery last week and will be in a brace until the end of February.

An important piece of croquet silverware went on the line in Methven on Monday, and after a competitive day of play it remained in Methven with a local duo tasting success.

Seven teams took to the lawn for the Rawlinson Tray – an annual fixture featuring players from across the three croquet clubs in the Mid Canterbury district.

Fourteen players entered the competition with a junior player and a senior player matched together with one pairing sitting out in each round to accommodate the extra team.

Lorraine Pluck and Joey Gerard were the pair who emerged victorious at the end of the day’s play – much to their surprise.

“We had the bye in the first game, so we sat it out,” Pluck said.

“When it came to it, we didn’t actually realise that we were in the final but it was very nice to win it.

“It’s a tournament everyone wants to win.”

Croquet took a bit of a hit in the Methven township recently with issues with the playing surface at the Methven domain and numbers dwindled for a period but they have since been steadily on the rise in recent times.

There’s now eight people playing association croquet regularly and another eight who play golf croquet so the sport is starting to gain a prominence back in the township.

Raptors continue roll Fred VanVleet and Kyle Lowry both scored 19 points as the Toronto Raptors defeated the Sacramento Kings 120-105 without their NBA All-Star Kawhi Leonard. Lowry also had nine assists for the Raptors, who won their season-best 10th-straight home game, are 9-2 in January and have the second-best record (36-13) in the NBA. Kerevi Reds skipper Wallabies midfield back Samu Kerevi will captain the Reds during the upcoming Super Rugby season. Women’s pay row heats up One of the country’s leading women’s players has come to the defence of Peter McGlashan, after the Black Cap turned radio commentator was allegedly silenced following his criticism of New Zealand Cricket’s treatment of female players.

McGlashan, 39, caused a stir when revealing on Monday he was paid almost seven times as much for commentating on the T20 double-header over the weekend as any of the women playing at Eden Park’s Outer Oval. On Sunday, the Auckland Aces hosted the Otago Volts in the men’s Super Smash competition, followed by the women’s final between the Wellington Blaze and Canterbury Magicians.

McGlashan, who commentated on both matches for Radio Sport, said on Twitter he was paid $350, while players

from the Blaze and Magicians were each given a daily allowance of $55 and no match payments.

Auckland Aces fast bowler Mitch McClenaghan is believed to have earned $575 for his performance.

The Herald understands that McGlashan was asked to stop his public critique of NZC’s treatment of female players shortly after the tweet.

The former wicketkeeper, who played four ODIs and 11 T20s for the Black Caps, declined to comment when approached by the Herald.

An NZC spokesperson insisted the organisation had not muzzled McGlashan.

New Zealand Cricket Players Association boss Heath Mills earlier told Radio Sport they will be discussing the issue of pay equity with NZC when the Memorandum of Understand-

ing expires in July.

“Some of the questions we will be asking are: What does the future look like? What will be the ongoing investment?

And how do they see the domestic women’s game being structured in the future?”

Mills concedes, though, that it’s a complex matter.

“We think we need to preserve the opportunity for players to play in the two big Twenty20 leagues in England and Australia. It’s quite unique, as we’ve negotiated a position where our best women can go play in that [Women’s Big Bash] competition and not be available for our domestic competition,” Mills said.

“And that’s because those two competitions, and hopefully one out of India, will mean that those three could end up being the pinnacle of the sport, alongside ICC [In-

ternational Cricket Council] events. It’s a bit more complex how things may look going forward.”

The Herald reported in October that Northern Districts Cricket was set to announce it would give its women cricketers equal pay during domestic T20 double-headers.

It had gone as far as preparing a press release about it, before NZC stepped in.

It is believed some associations recoiled when faced with the prospect of trying to match ND. Rachel Priest, a veteran of 83 ODIs and 68 T20s, welcomed McGlashan’s comments.

“Pete’s a good guy. He’s not going to come out and be totally negative, but he likes to start conversations, and that’s what we need in this world,” Priest said.

Team NZ begin construction on boat For the first time in the history of Emirates Team New Zealand, the team has begun construction of its own America’s Cup boat in their own purpose-built boatyard on Auckland’s North Shore.

Led by Team New Zealand Build Operations Manager Sean Regan, the facility which has been a long-term vision of the team, starting from the ground up and turning a clean factory floor into one of the most up-to-date, purpose-built composite boat building facilities in the country.

“As with everything in the America’s Cup, time is of the essence and in setting up the build facility we basically gave ourselves two months from the day we took over the lease of the premises to be ready to start building our first boat,” explained Regan.

The layout of the vast 1800 sqm building has been extensively considered with the view to putting together the most effective and comfortable workspace possible. The team has sought feedback from some of the industry’s best boatbuilders as well as many of our valued team suppliers.

“We really approached this set up with an open mind along with our typical number 8 wire thinking,” said Regan. “We looked at the clean floor plan and thought about everything in terms of the production of the most technically advanced composite race yacht. From the layout of the three ovens, the heating, extrac-

Just as important as bringing all of the necessary equipment together was the task of bringing the new 40 strong team onboard.

All 40 people are now working as a team with enthusiasm and a mix of experience that will need to perform exceptionally as a group when the pressure is on.

“We have been able to assemble a mixed group of specialist boat building veterans – a number of whom were the key core

people from Cookson’s Boats, existing Emirates Team New Zealand shore crew and a bunch of hungry young apprentices. These guys are really working well together and growing the wider experience in the industry by the day which is very satisfying for everyone.

“The beauty of winning the America’s Cup and bringing it back to New Zealand is it gives us the ability to try to restimulate what has been a stagnant or declining industry over the past

few years.” The real performance benefits of bringing the boat building ‘in-house’ for Team New Zealand is the ability to shift resources and schedules to suit the team’s operations which enables a more efficient link between the designers at the team base in the Viaduct and the production team on the North Shore.

“As we saw in the last America’s Cup, we need to be really dynamic in our overall design approach and our production priorities day-to-day so now we are more in

charge of our own build destiny than we ever have been before.

“Typically, in with the objective of extracting every last detail of performance gain, the designers leave handing their final designs over to the production until the very last opportunity.

Not only that, they continue to refine designs beyond specific deadlines so now we can make changes as the priorities shift which allows us to make design decisions a lot later but more advanced than we ever have been able to.”

Integral to the set-up of the base as always with Team New Zealand has been a number of key suppliers of the team.

“We really couldn’t have achieved what we have in setting this base up without our official suppliers.

“A huge amount of the cost in setting up has been met by suppliers with products, services and expertise – which never ceases to amaze us how valuable the support of everyday Kiwi companies and their generosity is to us working towards defending the America’s Cup in 2021.

“Call me biased but I think we have put together one of the best composite boat building facilities in New Zealand, and hope that it will serve the team well for AC36, but also the wider marine industry on projects outside of the America’s Cup.” - NZME

This should be the end of Steve Tew

By Chris rattue School reports don’t get much worse than this.

It was like “class clown” was scrawled over every page. Statistics showed playing numbers are plummeting in Auckland, and the same is happening elsewhere.

New Zealand Rugby commissioned an independent review into schools rugby, even before the Auckland first XV revolt against St Kentigern College came to light.

Rugby deserves a C-minus for its school work, judging by the review findings released this week. And even then, the review fell woefully short by failing to include incredibly significant wider influences.

It’s time to sack the principal, in my opinion. In other words, it is time for Steve Tew to depart as head of New Zealand Rugby.

Tew will go down as one of the great administrators in our sports history. He is the iron man.

But the school report, released this week, reflects a game in serious trouble.

What the review was really saying, in a way, is that rugby is out

Steve Tew has been at the helm of New Zealand Rugby since 2007. of touch.

The only positive area in schools was girls rugby. But this simply mirrors what is happening in other sports traditionally dominated by males.

Super Rugby is a dud. Provincial rugby has lost its glow.

Schools rugby is a mess. League

is winning the war in significant parts of Auckland, even though the NRL is hardly in great health itself.

Auckland, the biggest market, is a rugby dead zone compared to what it should be. New Zealand players are flooding overseas.

Crowds are sparse. Kids (and oth-

ers) increasingly love American sport, fantasy leagues, e-sport.

Rugby is rushing an ambulance to the bottom of a cliff after the release of this week’s review.

It is like a doctor dealing with an injured body part without understanding the whole picture and considering an holistic solution.

Rugby was handed the national schools system on a plate many years ago, thanks to influential principals and teachers who were rugby diehards.

Yet with all the advantages, the national sport is making a pig’s ear of this silk purse.

For those of us who can’t stand the rugby arrogance, it’s a laugh to witness boys quitting the game in droves. But from a pro-rugby point of view, the heat should now be on the game’s top administrators.

Tew – for all of his strengths – has left the domestic game in a shaky state.

Fifteen-a-side rugby may well become more of a spectator than participation sport. But the drastic drop in school numbers still reflects that rugby lacks the glamour and accessibility which rising generations expect from professional sport.

In other words, American basketball superstar LeBron James is dunking all over rugby.

The All Blacks are magnificent.

But the real state of the New Zealand game is masked by Super Rugby success, which relies heavily on an inept Australian administration, and the lingering horrors of apartheid in South Africa.

Rugby needs to get real, get in the modern age.

Tew has been in the top job since 2007, and a national administrator for 18 years.

The game’s image has remained dour. Apart from the odd exception like the enlightened Chiefs halfback Brad Weber, it is still an archaic sport of remote stars and administrators ill-prepared for what lies ahead.

These problems stem from the very top, and obsessive central control.

No sport is beyond a crash.

West Indian cricket and Australian tennis are prime examples of dominant forces which have collapsed.

History will judge Steve Tew fairly well, but only if he gets out in time. And the time is now.

Pliskovia ousts Williams Serena Williams was one point – just one – from quite a comeback victory in the Australian Open quarter-finals when she turned her left ankle.

Everything unravelled from there.

In a startling reversal and result, Williams wasted four match points along the way to dropping the last six games of a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 loss to No. 7 seed Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic at Melbourne Park yesterday.

“I was almost in the locker room,” Pliskova told the Rod Laver Arena crowd, “but now I’m standing here as the winner”.

So instead of Williams moving closer to an eighth championship at the Australian Open and record-tying 24th Grand Slam title overall, it is Pliskova who will continue her pursuit of her first major trophy.

In the semi-finals, Pliskova will face No. 4-seeded Naomi Osaka, who advanced by beating No. 6 Elina Svitolina 6-4, 6-1 earlier esterday. The other women’s semi-final will be two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova against unseeded American Danielle Collins.

Williams’ surprising departure scuttled what would have been a much-anticipated rematch against Osaka, who beat her in the chaotic US Open final last September.

This defeat is the earliest in Australia for Williams since a fourthround loss to Ana Ivanovic in 2014. Since then, she had won the tournament in 2015, lost in the final in 2016, and won again in 2017 while pregnant, before missing last year’s edition a few months after the birth of her daughter.

The 37-year-old American’s match against Pliskova was played under a stifling sun, with the temperature around 25 degrees Celsius, and Williams – coming off an intense three-set victory over No. 1 Simona Halep in the fourth round – often stepped into the patches of shade behind each baseline.

In the first set alone, Williams made more than twice as many unforced errors as her opponent, 11-5, a pattern that would continue throughout. By the end, the margin was 37-15.

Looking increasingly frustrated, Williams would yell at herself after mistakes or gesture as if to say, “That’s NOT how I should be hitting the ball!” Add it all up, and Pliskova led by a set and a break at 3-2 in the second.

Only then did Williams seem to get going. From there, she immediately earned her first break

point of the match and converted it to get to 3-all, beginning a run in which she claimed nine of 11 games.

“I was a little bit too passive,” Pliskova said about that section of the match. “Obviously mentally down.”

And then it all changed. Serving for the victory at 5-1, 40-30, Williams was called for a foot fault – reminiscent of an infamous such ruling at the US Open a decade ago. During the ensuing point esterday, Williams twisted her left ankle and dumped a forehand into the net.

She grabbed at her foot after-

ward, and would go on to cede that game.

Not a big deal, right? She still had a sizable lead.

Except three more match points would follow, and Pliskova staved off each one.

Williams would again serve for the match at 5-3 – and again get broken. The owner of the most feared and respected serve in women’s tennis was broken for a third time in a row at 5-all, and Pliskova was on her way.

“She got a little bit shaky in the end,” Pliskova said.

“So I took my chances. And I won.”

Osaka will carry a 12-match Grand Slam winning streak into the semi-finals.

The 21-year-old from Japan moved closer to a second consecutive major championship by parlaying her aggressive and powerful style into a 31-11 edge in winners against Svitolina.

“For me, right now, I just try to keep looking forward. So I’m not really satisfied. Like, I am happy that I’m here, but at the same time, I want to keep going,” said Osaka, who never had been past the fourth round at the Australian Open. “There is more matches to win.”

■ KARAKA MILLION

Blackie buzzed for big night Tauranga trainer Mark Blackie could be in for his biggest day in racing when he takes a third of his team north for the Karaka Million meeting at Ellerslie on Saturday night.

The Bay of Plenty horseman only has six horses in work and he is excited to have a good representation at one of the biggest meetings on the New Zealand racing calendar.

“I haven’t been back training long and to have two running on Karaka Million night, one with a real genuine chance and the other with a bit of a chance, where you are on the big stage is a bit of a buzz,” Blackie said.

“It’s nice to be up there so quickly again.”

Blackie will line-up Joy Anna in the Gr.3 Preferment @ Brighthill Farm Concorde Handicap (1200m), while Le Castille will contest the Gr.2 Westbury Classic (1400m).

Le Castille has been in great form of late, winning her last two races and Blackie believes she is a big chance of adding blacktype to her record on Saturday.

“I think she can get some black-type in that field depending on luck in the running. It all comes down to the race on the day,” he said.

“She has done very well since her last run at Tauranga and thrived since. I can’t fault her, she has improved since her last run.

“I know she has only had nine starts but I think she warrants a start in that sort of field. We all need a win and if we didn’t think we could win we wouldn’t be going.”

Le Castille will jump from barrier six under jockey Vinnie Colgan and Blackie is confident he has her spot-on ahead of Saturday, but is hoping for a bit of improvement in the track.

“I do really rate her because she has improved so much out of her last run, she will be peaking for Saturday,” he said.

“She can really ping on a hard track so I prefer her on a Good3, she can go through the wet but she doesn’t ping as fast as she does on a Dead4 or Dead5.”

Paddock beckons The Lance Noble-trained Sistabeel added a third win to her record when taking out the NZB Insurance Pearl Series Race (1200m) at Avondale yesterday.

Sistabeel jumped away well from the ace barrier and settled in the trail behind pacemaker Cin Cin for jockey Leith Innes. Innes was able to find some clear racing room down the straight where Sistabeel was able to lengthen and win by 1-1/4 lengths over Cin Cin, with a further three-quarters of a length back to Witchery in third. “It was very good and panned out really well,” Noble said. “Leith rode her perfectly and got a nice split at the right time and it was very pleasing.

“It’s great to see the Cambridge Stud colours have been to the fore lately and hopefully that goes into the sales for them.” Progeny of Sistabeel may appear in future sales drafts for the stud, with the Savabeel mare set to join the broodmare band of the Cambridge farm in the coming months. “She is in-foal to Tavistock and doesn’t have too many runs left,” Noble said. “I think we’ll get another race out of her, but she has done a great job and she’ll join the broodmare band at Cambridge Stud and I am sure she will do a great job.”

A whitewash at Moe

The daughter of Iffraaj was unplaced in both of her starts this preparation, but showed a glimpse of her ability when taking out her 935m trial heat at Cambridge earlier this month.

“She has been a little bit out of form since she has come back, we have had a few leg problems with her,” he said.

“She went okay her first start back. We thought maybe she didn’t want to be racing anymore so we went to the Cambridge trials to see where she was at and she seems to be back on her game now.

“Her fitness has improved out of sight. The trial has restored

her confidence a bit, mine as well.”

Blackie said his charge should run a solid race on Saturday, but he expects there is still plenty of improvement left in the mare.

A win on Saturday would be a career highlight for Blackie, who returned to the industry after a brief hiatus.

“This is my third season back,” he said. “I only have six in work at the moment but I have a class A licence so it gives me room to expand.

“About 2002 I gave it away, my partner and I were quite far away in Matangi, out the back of Hamilton, and it was quite a distance from Cambridge where I trained and I realised you pretty much have to be on the track to save

costs. It was taking time and time is money.

“I did a lot of rural fencing and I did a lot of work as a courier in that time but it was family reasons that I gave it away. It just wasn’t working and I needed a bit of a freshen-up.

“It was a bit hard and harsh there for a while and I thought the best thing for the horses was to get out and come back into it when I was ready and three years ago I started to get that buzz back when I started riding work at the track.”

Blackie’s buzz has returned with the help of his two mares and he is hoping that will continue on the big stage at Ellerslie on Saturday.

The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Grand Bernini scored his maiden victory at Moe yesterday, which was nearly as eye-catching as his colour.

The white son of Shamexpress disappointed on debut when tailing the field home at Bairnsdale last month. However, he more than made up for that performance at Moe on Wednesday, winning his 1014m maiden contest by five lengths. “Being a small field we got away well and it was important to get him into a good rhythm.

He had a few gear changes today, which also helped him,” jockey Jye McNeil said. “Hopefully he can mature and go on through the grades.” Stable representative Mark Larker was happy with the run and said Grand Bernini’s trainers have taken a patient approach with their showy runner.

“The horse has got ability, he has put together some really nice gallops at Sandown. He’s still learning his craft and when he does gallop properly at Sandown he gallops beautifully,” Larker said.

Hampstead Bowling Club’s Scott Hyndman sends a bowl up the green at Hinds at the weekend.

Hyndman joined a full rink of players in the Maddison Trophy at the Hinds Bowling Club.

The annual tournament is held as an open fours competition and it was Cecil Tubb’s side which emerged victorious at the end of the day’s play ahead of the team skipped by Brent Mayson.

Meanwhile, up the road in Christchurch at the Burnside Bowling Club it was a case of close, but no cigar for local players competing in the prestigious Burnside invitational pairs.

Former New Zealand representative, Sandra Keith finished the best of the local hopes – she and her playing partner, Serena Matthews finished on top of their section with four wins and

a draw from their five matches in the section play stage of the competition.

That qualified them for the top division of the competition alongside other section winners – and gave them a shot at the lion’s share of the prize money.

Things started promisingly in the post-section stage for the pair with a strong win in their opening match but two further losses

in their remaining two games resulted in the duo finishing fifth equal – picking up $450 worth of prize money for their efforts.

Rodney Greaney ended up making his way through to the division two group of the post-section play but one win from their three matches in that stage saw them finish in seventh equal in the division.

Matt Bassett also finished seventh equal in their division three.

This weekend will see the first of the sub-centre events for the new year held with the pairs in action over two days.

Qualifying will be held on Saturday at both Methven and Rakaia before post-section play is held on Sunday at the MSA green where the champions will be found.
