Police get tough on disorder Police took a tough line on disorder in Ashburton’s CBD last weekend. Canterbury police helped break up fights and dispersed a crowd of about 50 people in a special operation, Ashburton police senior sergeant Scott Banfield said in a prepared statement released to media yesterday. Police were in town as part of a prevention operation over-
night on Saturday to help prevent disorder and to support door staff and local security. Local officers and prevention staff carried out high visibility patrols and visited licensed premises. A 28-year-old Ashburton man and two Ashburton women, aged 46 and 24, were arrested and received pre-charge warnings for obstruction and disorderly behaviour.

In the statement, Mr Banfield said local police and security staff also intervened in a smaller disorder incident at a nearby fast food restaurant. “The disorder occurred between 3am-4.30am, and indications are that all involved were affected by alcohol,” Mr Banfield said. “We urge everyone to drink responsibly and look out for your mates. ating your drinking, eating and drinking water or soft drinks are the two most effective ways of controlling the effects of alcohol,” he said. The operation follows a large brawl in the CBD in the early hours of February 1. At the time, police said up to 150 people were involved in the largescale fight, which broke out on East Street at around 3am. A police constable required
stitches to his face after being king hit when he tried to approach an offender. Two members of the public were also knocked unconscious during the incident, while several other people were treated for minor injuries. In the statement, Mr Banfield said police wanted to thank the local security and door staff for their help in preventing serious disorder at the weekend. Ph 03 307 7900 to subscribe!
