All I want for Christmas is . . .

The Guardian dropped in to find out the Christmas wishes of pre-schoolers from The Phoenix Preschool.

Lucas Raukete is hoping to help out around the house by getting a Mouse Trapper from Santa this Christmas.

Spencer Hampton is keeping his fingers crossed that Santa will bring him a motorbike this Christmas.

Ruby Ross is waiting patiently to see if Santa will bring her a much awaited scooter.

Declan Leslie is hoping Santa will help this budding firefighter by bringing him a fire truck this Christmas.

Liam Nolan is hoping that Santa might bring him some dinosaurs this Christmas, but not ones that are alive of course.

Body elected ATS chairman Methven farmer Alister Body is the new ATS board chairman.

Body, who replaces retiring chairman Phil McKendry, has been on the ATS board of directors since 2001; he is also a current director of DairyNZ and Pastoral Genomics, as well as chairman of the Dairy Environment Leadership Group and the New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards Trust.

Body and his wife Janine Peters farm off the Methven highway, where they milk 550 cows, with the help of a farm manager and two permanent staff.

The farm was bought by his grandfather in 1925 and was a typical cropping farm until 1969

when they built a six-a-side herringbone shed to milk a small herd of about 50 jerseys. In 1981 they were among the first wave of dairy pioneers, converting the property completely to dairy and building a 28-bale rotary milking shed.

Body said the past 30 years had seen huge changes to the way dairy farmers made a living, from the size of herds to how they grew and irrigated their pasture.

Trying to borrow money for the conversion back then, he was told Methven was simply too cold for dairy farming.

He said Mid Canterbury was a successful farming area with

based farmers in years to come.

ATS reflected that versatility with shareholders from diverse farming backgrounds and suppliers now nationwide through its Ruralco network.

“The diverse nature of the district helps ATS. Our eggs are not in one basket and the dairy downturn has affected us, but we do have more than dairy farmer clients.”

Body said the farming supplies business was nimble enough to react to changes, like the reduced milk payout, to make sure it got the best deals for its members.

ty, it will be largely business as usual though the Ruralco brand will become the public face of the business with new signs and branding on cars and buildings early next year, and management would move from Kermode Street to Burnett Street, to the building opposite its retail store that Gabites will vacate in March.

Body said the co-operative would always face strong competition and its strength was being able to have the best price as well as the best customer service.

“It is about adding value for our members and our card suppliers, and if we do that we will have a great future.”

Boxing Day races under threat

Falling on-course betting and low gate takings could see Ashburton’s Boxing Day races canned.

The race meeting has been a highlight on the district’s Christmas event calendar for decades but Harness Racing New Zealand has signalled its days could be numbered.

The best indicator that change was in the wind was when the draft meeting calendar was drawn up for 2017, and the race day was missing, said Ashburton Racecourse manager Fiona Stuart.

In some ways, that wasn’t a surprise, she said.

“With the amount of racing that’s on that day, we just don’t stack up any longer; we’ve lost a lot of support. If we’re not doing the turnover they look at us.”

On-course betting was down every year and at the same time the big crowds that traditionally packed the course as part of their Christmas ritual, were also dwindling, Stuart said.

She believes this year’s meeting will be the ultimate test of the meeting’s future – if the numbers are big, then there might be an opportunity to fight for its survival; if not, the Ashburton Trotting Club won’t have any ammunition with which to prepare a case.

“Surely there are enough people, enough locals who will support us? I believe they’re holding off on making a decision, they’re waiting to see what happens this year, but if we slump again, the club may not even fight to save it.”

While falling on-course betting is the major factor that’s put the meeting’s future in doubt, there is also the issue of TAB meeting vans. One is due to be retired and if it’s not replaced then there would be more Boxing Day meet-

If you’re wanting to set up for the day at this year’s Boxing Day races you’ll be able to set up in the Ashburton Racecourse car park at 9am.

As it has been for the past few years, taking alcohol into the course proper is banned, but both food and alcohol can be purchased in this area, defined as between the turnstiles. BYO is alive and well in the car park and barbecue food will be available in this area.

The race day is designed as a family day out, with entertainment on course for both children and adults.

The biggest single collect competition will run again this year and this could as easily be won with a $1 bet as a big investment, Stuart said.

The first race is 12.30pm and the last at 5.48pm. Gates to the car park close at 7pm but the area will be monitored by security teams overnight. Anyone leaving a vehicle at the racecourse overnight will be able to collect this from 5am the next morning.

No snow, so no skiing Despite a bit of snow earlier this month, Mt Hutt skifield won’t be open for Christmas Eve skiing.

The skifield had promised to open today if there was enough snow, to celebrate winning a big ski area award this year and while there was snow in the forecast earlier this week, there was not enough for skiing or riding.

The skifield will be open for a fundraiser rides day on March 4.

Ashburton-born artist Jack McDonald has won Fonterra’s #431AM Rural Art Competition.

The contest attracted 188 entries and almost 3000 votes.

McDonald painted a quiet intersection at Kurow using acrylics after taking a trip with his dad Mark, who also paints. The McDonalds run a dairy farm in Mid Canterbury. Dianne Clayton and Henrietta Willis took out second and third spots.

When Santa comes calling tomorrow, the Cudmore children will have earned their presents.

With grandma Judy Skevington, Brontson, Claudia and Paige spent yesterday decorating Ashburton’s Sinclair Centre to create the perfect festive atmosphere for Ashburton’s community Christmas dinner, blowing up balloons and decorating the Christmas tree.

While grandma will be spending Christmas Day as a volunteer during the community meal, the Cudmore children will be at home unwrapping presents.

Paige said she’d made a phone call to Santa to ensure her wishes were heard.

“I’ve asked him for a surprise and a unicorn toy,” she said.

Brontson and Claudia are not sure what will be under the family Christmas tree with their name on it.

The three said they were happy to play a part in helping with the Christmas lunch preparations.

“It’s nice to do something for someone else,” Claudia said.

And as a regular volunteer on Christmas Day, Judy said it was important to her that her grandchildren understood the importance of helping others.

Ashburton could be one of 50 centres around New Zealand to have a new skin and appearance treatment company set up in business. The Caci franchise is aiming to open a string of new businesses across New Zealand next year and Ashburton is on the list. It’s looking for franchisees keen to take up the business challenge. Caci is owned by the FAB Group and intends to hold a series of discovery days from January 24 to provide potential franchisees with an opportunity to find out more about the business.

Recycler ‘can handle extra flow’

The Ashburton District Council says its solid waste contractor EnviroWaste will not be overwhelmed with recycling now that Wastebusters has closed its public recycling area.

Projects and operations manager Viv Eyberg said the council and EnviroWaste typically prepared for the seasonal peak in recycling and rubbish collection this time of year.

And any additional recycling following the closure of Wastebusters’ recycling area this week would be taken into account.

“We do not know what volumes to expect, but Envirowaste Services will be provid-

ing additional resources over this period to meet the demand,” Eyberg said.

“Any additional recycling means additional income to the contractor, which can fund additional resources when required, so there will be no extra cost to our ratepayers.”

The council would monitor its rural drop-off sites and if there was any substantial increase, more bins would be rolled out.

Wastebusters manager Sharon Breakwell was also confident EnviroWaste would manage the extra volumes.

She said volumes taken daily by the non-profit organisation over the years had been significant, however, no records had been kept as to actual figures.

Cooking their way to the top

When a carefully engraved gold plate arrived in the mail, Vanetia Bingham and her staff at the Lake House Restaurant were popping champagne corks.

That plate acknowledged the restaurant as one of New Zealand’s best when it came to serving beef and lamb dishes of a consistently high quality.

When head chef Brent Lilley created two dishes he wanted to enter in the NZ Beef and Lamb excellence awards, owner Vanetia Bingham was delighted.

She knew that winning an award would be an absolute guarantee for customers that the Lake House produced food that was among the best in New Zealand.

And she had every confidence in her head chef that his culinary skills were up to the task.

While two dishes were put forward for the award, the ultimate test came in the experiences of the mystery diners, who came, ate and left without revealing their identity, Bingham said.

“It could have been any time over a three-month period. We didn’t even know they’d been in, in fact we thought they’d forgotten about us. And then we received a letter and a plate in the mail,” she said.

With beef and lamb dishes a strong component of the Lake House menu, receiving an excellence award was a great reward for the team, Bingham said.

“Brent has a real ability to be able to put lots of fantastic flavours together. One of his dishes was a fillet steak with a sticky date pudding. It was an amazing dish.”

Another on the judges’ list was Cardrona merino lamb with parsnip puree, baked figs and coffee jus.

“We wanted to show locals how much we focus on really good quality food. With this award, people will realise we’re producing plates that are recognised nationally,” she said.

The 2017 award is the first the Lake House has received, but other local winner, Stronechrubie at Mt Somers has been a regular awardee.

We are family . . .

W

hen you think about Christmas most people’s thoughts include family.

Families come together at Christmas or you miss a family member who isn’t sitting around the Christmas dinner table because of distance, death or a disagreement. Often Christmas is the only time all the family gather in one place at the one time.

Something about Christmas means people make an effort to be with family, they reunite.

People can travel a huge distance to reconnect with family at Christmas. In fact the story behind the reason we have and celebrate Christmas is about a family going home.

Mary and Joseph went to Bethlehem because that was Joseph’s home town. The census that was taking place required them to go to their family home.

As families gather for Christmas often differences have to be put aside. It can be small differences like whether it should be turkey or chicken for dinner, or a bit more serious, whose place Christmas dinner should be held

at or how much to spend on presents.

This year our “family” – that is the church family of St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church is putting aside its differences as a Protestant Church to have their Christmas Eve service at 11pm in Holy Name Catholic Church. And of course vice versa, Holy Name are

opening their doors and welcoming us in.

Once our differences would have stopped us having any connection, but thankfully that is not the case these days.

Following their 6pm and 9pm Mass, Holy Name, a house of God will welcome another family in. This year St Andrew’s can’t

worship in their church due to pending earthquake repairs.

With the community lunch in our hall, it was a bit like no room at the inn, so just as Jesus was born in an unusual place, we are worshipping in an unusual place for a Presbyterian congregation.

Christmas Day our 9.30am service to will be different, it’s in

the Sinclair Centre which is St Andrew’s Church Hall. And right next door to our service another ‘family’ is gathering.

The ‘family’ that each year unites for Christmas to put on the Community Christmas Lunch for people who in some cases have no family to share Christmas lunch with, if you are someone like that go and join this ‘family’.

Not all families that come together are blood related, many are friends, who after all are the family we choose for ourselves.

As families come together memories are created, history is kept alive and stories are told.

So this Christmas, may you and your family connect, if it is possible?

This Christmas, I encourage you to join a church family for Christmas Eve and/or Christmas Day services.

Just as there are a variety of families, so there are a variety of Christmas services, different styles, different locations and different times.

On behalf of Rev David Brown, myself, the parishioners of St Andrew’s and the Ashburton Christian Ministers’ Association, we wish you and your family a very Happy Christmas and best wishes for 2017.

Trevor Cochrane leaves P

E teacher Trevor Cochrane leaves big shoes to fill at Ashburton College. More correctly, big running shoes.

As a student he was a star athlete and later as a teacher he has encouraged and coached many into the track and field scene.

Cochrane retires this year after 41 years as a teacher at Ashcoll – three of the many records he set as a student in the 1960s still stand.

One of those is the 100 metres senior boys’ record of 11.1 seconds – which he shares with Keith Plunket, who set it in 1943, and Ian Watson (his brother-in-law) who equalled the mark again in 1979.

He also holds the senior boys’ 200 metres (22.4 seconds) record and the long jump (6.66m) record.

Holding such long-standing records is special, but the highlight of his sporting life was representing New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games in Christchurch in 1974. Cochrane, who was training as a teacher in Christchurch at the time, competed in four events.

A 100 metres specialist, his best time was 10.5 seconds and at the time he ran that, the New Zealand record was just 10.4 seconds. To compare, the world record today is held by Jamaica’s Usain Bolt with 9.58 seconds.

So Cochrane was well-qualified for the job when he started as an assistant teacher of physical education in February 1976. It was the start of what was to become a long and quality input into the life and work of the school.

He taught, coached, managed, and loaned gear; he and wife Jan gave up weekends and time after school to help students who wanted to be better at their chosen discipline. He was appointed head of department in 1986 and head of the health and PE faculty in 1998, in 2003 he became head of recreation and sport. It was his job to evaluate and explore how to increase engagement and positive outcomes for all students in the classes under his health and sport umbrella.

He was known as careful, meticulous, thorough and knowledgeable – whether it was in the classroom, for college sports events or training of individual athletes.

Cochrane is proud of his association with the school, which began as a first day pupil in 1965 when Hakatere College and Ashburton High School combined to become Ashburton College. For seven years, the school operated on two sites – the juniors at Hakatere (where the Ashburton Police Station is now) and the seniors at the high school (now the Ashburton Intermediate School). Teachers used to drive between the two sites for classes. The two groups combined on Walnut Avenue, the present site of Ashburton College, in 1972.

By then Cochrane was training as a teacher in Christchurch. In those days student teachers were paid a wage and guaranteed a job on graduation. So when the Education Gazette in October 1975 advertised six jobs for PE teachers, Cochrane applied for the one in Ashburton.

Ashburton College’s sports boss Trevor Cochrane has hung up his stopwatch. Guardian reporters find his name lives on in the record books.

“I promised myself I would come back for two years . . . and that was 41 years ago,” he said.

“Ashburton College was a great place to be educated and it has been a great place to teach.

Ashburton is also a great place to bring up children and that is really what kept me here.”

Cochrane’s wife Jan and children Charlotte (now 32) and James (29) have all shared a passion for sports over the years.

“Jan has contributed a lot to Ashburton College over the years too through netball,” he said. And she was the obvious choice as athletic team manager.

Hundreds of students have benefited from his advice over the years and he has coached nine college athletes and eight college relay teams to national honours. Amongst those youngsters was Steve Hollings, who used Cochrane’s shoes and shorts to set a college high jump record 26 years ago that still stands today.

Hollings jumped 2.09m in the borrowed gear and went on to set a national record later that year and go on to the world junior championships.

The last of Cochrane’s records at the school was broken in 2014 when Gareth Hunt eclipsed his 48year record in the under 15 boys’ triple jump.

Cochrane had set the record in 1966 at 11.89 and Hunt leapt 11.93 at the college athletic finals, having sought the veteran track star out several days earlier to pick his brains about technique.

Records were made to be broken, he said at the time.

Cochrane thoroughly enjoyed working with students over the decades on and off the sports fields and says 99 per cent strive to do their best. “The remaining 1 per cent can make life difficult and take a lot of your attention, but the majority of them turn out to be good citizens too.”

Acting principal Andrea Pearce paid tribute to Cochrane’s contribution saying major sports events, particularly swimming and athletics sports, have run smoothly thanks to his organisation and hours behind the scenes. He was

also on the Ashburton Community Pool Board, chairperson of the 2011 New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Cross Country Championships in Ashburton and on many in-school committees.

Cochrane was also honoured by the Aoraki Sports Awards in recent years with a secondary schools’ staff contribution longevity award, testament to his pro-active approach in promoting all sports and encouraging student participation at the school.

In 1987 he was coach of the New Zealand Secondary Schools athletics team to compete in Australia and in 1988 he was selected to attend a high performance coaches’ course at the Australian Institute of Sport.

He was the Ashburton College delegate to the Aoraki Secondary Schools’ Athletic Association for more than 30 years and was a member of the committee since its inception, and is the Aoraki selector for the South Island Secondary Schools’ Athletics Championships. Ashburton has hosted the South Island champs twice, in 1981 and 1989.

Cochrane has also managed the school’s netball and rugby teams to Australia three times, and managed the netball team to national secondary schools championships.

Cochrane has no firm plans as he steps back from a busy life on campus. “I used to play golf and I might get back into that.”

No doubt, the former sprint star will be tearing up the fairways.

Harriers take up the challenge A group of members from the Ashburton Harrier Club recently took part in and completed the annual Kepler Challenge.

Consisting of a 60km run through the heart of Te Anau, the

event is known widely as the jewel in New Zealand’s mountain running calendar and is on the bucket list for many people.

Some of the group took part in the slightly less taxing Luxmore

Grunt and all of the group were happy to say they completed their challenges.

Merv Gilbert, who is a longstanding member of the harrier club, took part in the challenge

for the 23rd time this year.

His grand-daughter, Anna, completed the race with him by running alongside for the final 100 metres.

Christmas offerings come early for Carlos Tevez The English Premier League is hardly short of cash.

But football’s phenomenal giant is coming up against an even bigger money monster – China.

And the China factor has just seen player wages reach a new level of staggering, with Argentinian Carlos Tevez about to earn more than $1m a week.

Staggering is the appropriate word in this case.

The EPL is backed by a $9b domestic deal for 2016 to 2019, with the overseas rights sold for almost the same amount again.

This money goes straight to the clubs.

And yet the EPL is under threat from China, whose lowly league is

waving riches at players which is making even the likes of Chelsea tremble.

China’s national team is ranked in the 80s and its Super League is rated well outside the world’s top 10 leagues by pundits. But it punches well above its weight in purchasing players, although each club is restricted to five imports.

Most of the aggressive Chinese football revolution is put down to one man, President Xi Jinping, who is obsessed with football and wants China to qualify, host and win the World Cup. The game is now compulsory in the national schools, and the grand plan included an aim of luring 35 international stars to

the Chinese league this year.

Former Manchester United and City forward Tevez will leave his boyhood club Boca Juniors to earn $1.1m per week to play for Shanghai Shenhua.

Others like Wayne Rooney have received massive offers, and not everyone is turning the money down.

Hansen right on track The re-signing of prop Owen Franks is step one on All Blacks boss Steve Hansen’s quest to keep the band together through to 2019.

Franks (29) is likely to become the most-capped Kiwi prop in history, after penning a new deal on Thursday to stay on the Shaky Isles until the 2019 World Cup. But New Zealand Rugby’s work doesn’t end there, with several stalwarts coming off contract during 2017, including skipper Kieran Read.

Read (31) was reported to have become Kiwi rugby’s first million-dollar man last week, as a benefactor of the union’s new collective agreement.

NZ Rugby has put aside almost $25 million in additional funding between 2016 and 2018 to prevent players such as Read chasing the big bucks offshore.

Yet despite the new funding and increased wages, the union remains unable to compete with the mega-dollars on offer in places like Ireland and France.

A trio of senior All Blacks – Ben Smith, Israel Dagg and Aaron Cruden – have all fielded lucrative offers from Europe and may depart for greener pastures next year.

Nevertheless, Hansen anticipated that Read and Crusaders lock Sam Whitelock would soon sign on the dotted line as senior All Blacks and leaders.

They would be keen to secure an unprecedented third consecutive World Cup crown.

“I guess you’d want your captain to re-sign.

“Reading the paper the other day, I can’t see why he wouldn’t, you’ve all said he’s the million-dollar man,” Hansen said. “Those types of challenges inspire players to want to stay, so hopefully, we have everyone sign up.”

Hansen also echoed the sentiments of NZ Rugby boss Steve Tew last week, throwing his support behind the

idea of a sabbatical for Read in 2018.

The breaks enjoyed by former stars Richie McCaw and Dan Carter had kept the pair fresh to wreak havoc in key moments.

“You go back and the word ‘sabbatical’ was a nasty one,” Hansen said. “If it keeps them in New Zealand and makes them available to play these big test matches and tournaments to the standard they did, why wouldn’t you?”

The All Blacks will reconvene in New Zealand in January for a pre-Lions conditioning and wellness camp. The players will be put through their paces physically and told where to improve, before the Lions come to town in June.

“It’s so we can turn around to the franchises and say, ‘this is the nick they’re in and this is where we need them to get to’,” Hansen said.

Drug cheat still collecting ill-gotten gains his week I wanted to write about the Big Bash, one of my favourite sporting tournaments, with the likes of Brendon McCullum and Brad Hogg already lighting up the stage with their outrageous skills.

But I can’t let the spectre of a known drug cheat and criminal visiting our shores, and no doubt getting paid handsomely for his efforts, and being lauded by many as a champion who should be forgiven for ‘one or two minor indiscretions’ pass without some comment.

Anti-doping expert Dave Gerard says that Lance Armstrong “epitomises all that is bad about drug use in sport”, and yet he’s still somehow putting himself out there as some sort of role model, because he’s said ‘sorry’ for his misdemeanours.

When a two-time Olympic champion knows exactly who you are, you’re obviously making all the right moves and Mid Canterbury’s Jaidyn Busch is certainly doing that. MATT MARKHAM caught up with her to look back on a stellar year.

Jaidyn Bush has caught the eye of some influential people in the athletics world.

Jaidyn heading for the top Shot put, discus, rugby, basketball and hockey – you name it and Jaidyn Busch will more than likely play it.

And the chances are too that the young athletics star will be good at it as well.

Breaking into the national athletics scene at such a young age can be a tough gig, unless you’ve got that little bit of x-factor it can be easy to get missed in the hooplah.

Luckily though, Jaidyn appears to have that x-factor, in spades.

The Christchurch Girls’ High School student has endured, and enjoyed, a hectic 12 months of sporting endeavours but she’s consistently produced the results.

And in a varying number of sports too.

It’s shot put where she’s really making her mark though.

And there’s a few murmurs about the traps that there’s the potential there for the 15-year-old to go right to the top, if she choses to make a real go of it.

That was underlined earlier this month when she trounced her opposition in the Under 16 girls’ shot put at the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Athletics Championships in Waitakere.

With a winning throw of 13.87 metres – coming on her fourth throw of the competition – Busch was well clear of her rivals with second place going to a throw of 13 metres.

Five of Busch’s six throws exceeded that mark.

“Standing on that podium and getting a gold medal put around my neck in front of some of my family and friends was a really special moment for me,” she said.

“It doesn’t get much better.

“Despite winning I was initially a bit disappointed because I hadn’t thrown a PB but that all disappeared pretty quickly when the ceremony began.”

After picking up the sport around three years ago, Busch felt that in the past six months while training under Stevenson, her ability to throw has improved remarkably.

“It’s just the little things, I’ve learnt so much that I didn’t know.

“All things that make a difference when you put them all together.

Valerie Adams was on hand to watch the 30 competitors in the competition and Busch said the chance to meet her after the event was something very special because Adams has been her sporting hero for quite a while now.

“It was pretty surreal because when my coach introduced me to her, she said she knew who I was.

“So that was pretty cool.”

The progress made this year has, in part, come from a decision to come under the tutelage of

“I can feel the improvement in myself from when I started with Dale.

“At the moment I train twice a week with him, it would be three times but I also have rugby trainings and other things to attend so two is all I can do at the moment.”

Stevenson, who has mixed it with some of the biggest names in shot put around the world sees a bright future ahead for Busch if she decides to continue to pursue the sport.

“She’s got all the makings of going a long way if she choses to,” he said.

“Jaidyn is an absolute pleasure to coach and while she still has a long way to go, it’s all there.

“The National Secondary Schools’ title is a pretty big one, Valerie won that title so there’s a bit of prestige around it.

“At the moment our focus is on making sure she just enjoys competing and is learning as much as she can. Next year when she steps up an age bracket it will be harder again.

“It’s obviously a big year for her with her schooling and also rugby as well so it will be just as much about balancing everything and making sure she is happy.”

Talking to the Guardian from her Hinds home this week, Busch had the chance to reflect on what has been an incredible year where results and records have fallen her way frequently.

In shot put alone during the past 12 months she’s won her national gold medal, broken the Christchurch Girls’ High School records in both shot put and discus and also claimed success in the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ shot put final, as well as recording a new personal best mark of 14.59 metres along the way.

Then there’s the rugby exploits – which are quite incredible considering she’s only been playing for just over a year.

She’s been in the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ team and the South Island Secondary Schools’ team and competed in the National 7s tournament.

“When you look at it all, it’s been a pretty busy time, but I love my sport and enjoy competing.”

After starting out as a prop, Busch quickly found her niche in the front row, but does mix her roles depending on the situation.

While it’s something she never really envisaged herself doing, she’s quite pleased she took the chance to give it a go.

“I went along with a friend and really loved it, it’s good because it’s with different people and I’ve just kept going back.”

With NCEA kicking in next year as well as all the sport to pick back up, Busch knows she’s in for a busy time in 2017.

But the competitive streak that has clearly made her so successful kicks in as well and she can’t wait to tackle it head-on.

“There will be some juggling to make sure I stay on top of it all, but it will be a good challenge, and one I am really looking forward to.”

And who knows, by this time next year we might be staring down the barrel of this incredible young talent not only having Valerie Adams know who she is, but also getting close to competing against her on some of the biggest stages.

Punters’ chance to recover

A pair of group one performers who burned punters last week get the perfect chance to redeem themselves at Cambridge tonight.

The club’s Christmas Eve meeting hosts two group two events, the first for the sprinting trotters, the other mixing the four and five-year-old pacers, with some of those racing for more than just stake money.

Both have favourites – Marcoola (trot) and Chase The Dream (Futurity) – who gave punters a blood nose at Alexandra Park last Friday.

Chase The Dream was heavily backed in the Franklin Cup but blew his first standing start so should relish the return to a mobile 2700m tonight.

“It was a shame he galloped last week but he has come up well and has been working well so back to the mobile he is going to be very hard to beat,” said trainer-driver Mark Purdon.

While the race brings together

a mixture four and five-yearolds, the four four-year-olds are all competing for an automatic invite to the $A200,000 Chariots Of Fire in Sydney on February 11, a race Purdon says Chase The Dream would be set for should he win tonight.

The same would probably apply for second favourite Franco Cristiano if he won tonight and while he has the ability to do that his lack of gate speed could see him settle behind key rivals like Chase The Dream and Rocker Band, making his task more difficult than his draw suggests.

Rocker Band returns to the track where she won the Jewels and will find this marginally easier than chasing Dream About Me at Alexandra Park the last two Fridays so looks a good quinella hope.

Marcoola will be red hot for the $50,000 Trotters Mile but also goes into the race owing punters plenty, albeit through no fault of his own.

But Lyell Creek winner Sunny Ruby has high gate speed and new trainer David Butcher says he will be using it, even though the Cambridge mile start makes it hard to cross to the lead from wide draws.

“A lot depends on how fast the mobile gate is going, if it is really humming it will be hard to get across them,” said Butcher.

“But she has to go forward and the way she won last week if she gets to the markers she is going to be hard again.”

It is brutally hard to come from back in the field in Cambridge mile races so those on the speed should dominate the race, with Idle Bones having had enough sprint racing to suggest she too could be blazing forward from out wide and have an upset hope.

McDonald to appeal ban Champion jockey James McDonald will appeal an 18-month disqualification over a betting charge and has vowed to return to racing.

McDonald pleaded guilty at a stewards’ inquiry on Thursday to having an interest in a bet on Astern when he won on debut at Randwick on December 5 last year.

The 24-year-old netted $4000 from a $1000 bet placed on his behalf by punter Anthony Gardiner.

Following the disqualification, Godolphin terminated McDonald’s contract as the global racing giant’s No. 1 Australian rider.

In a statement, McDonald said he accepted full responsibility for breaking the rules of racing.

“I made an error of judgment betting on Astern when I rode it and broke a rule of racing,” McDonald said.

“But I am extremely disappointed with the penalty and I will be appealing.”

after stewards determined there were special circumstances including the guilty plea, his remorse and his record.

“I will be back riding, and hopefully sooner rather than later,” McDonald said.

“It is not appropriate that I say anything else until the appeal is over.”

The ban is backdated to when McDonald stood himself down on November 15 after being charged and expires on May 15, 2018.

During the inquiry McDonald’s lawyer Matthew Stirling pushed for a two to three month ban, arguing McDonald had co-operated fully and that the offence was at the low end of the scale because he had ridden Astern.

“In New Zealand where James grew up, a jockey can bet on his mount and it regularly happens,” Stirling said.

Stirling said it was inevitable young jockeys would be befriended by players in the industry including punters.

Gardiner, who has been warned off NSW racetracks after not responding to stewards’ requests to be interviewed over the matter, profited in excess of $125,000 from bets on Astern from the race.

The inquiry heard Gardiner stood to win more than $400,000 from a combination of pre-post and multi bets on Astern to win the Golden Slipper which were placed before the colt’s debut.

Stewards had previously warned McDonald about his association with Gardiner before the Tramway Stakes on September 3.

The inquiry heard Gardiner had backed Dibayani who was competing against McDonald’s mount Hauraki in the Group Two race at Randwick.

Stewards saw McDonald and Gardiner acknowledging each other in the mounting yard and as the horses went on to the track.

Chief steward Marc Van Gestel spoke to McDonald behind the barriers, warning him he would be watched closely during the race which was won by Hauraki.

McDonald has won 34 Group One races and two Sydney jockeys’ premierships and is widely considered to be one of the best jockeys in Australia.

Fire Jet was rated a $10 chance for the Railway Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day, but co-trainer Peter Williams said the four-year-old gelding would be sent for a spell after the Boxing Day sprint. “He’s not going to the Railway. He’s poorly weighted under the conditions of the race. He had 55, Natuzzi had 56, so it didn’t make a lot of sense,” said Williams, who trains in partnership with his wife Dawn and Paul Richards.

Steel ‘dumped’ in NZ

steel coil from China had been undercutting NZ steel prices, and the imports had caused price depression.

The Chinese Government was informed of the application from NZ Steel on October 20.

In its submission, it suggested that NZ Steel had failed to provide sufficient and accurate evidence to prove the alleged subsidies, injury and causal link.

The Chinese Government submitted that “remarks from media and law firms had been used as a basis for a wild guess that China was subsidising its steel industry”.

The complaint about alleged steel dumping to MBIE was cited in media reports earlier this year as a reason China could retaliate against New Zealand dairy and kiwifruit exporters in a “trade war”.

US equities delivered the strongest returns over the three months to November 30, as the market focused on the Trump growth dividend.

while the already positive economic growth occurring in the US and low unemployment also increases inflationary pressures.

New Zealand longer-term bonds are highly correlated to US interest rates, so higher longerterm rates should be expected.

Shorter-term rates are also expected to rise despite the outlook for no change in the Official Cash Rate (OCR).

This is likely to be driven by higher bank deposit rates, as banks attempt to maintain core funding ratios.

Deposit growth has been lagging lending growth and this has already led to tighter credit conditions.

With more than $40b needed to maintain lending growth, we believe banks are likely to continue to increase mortgage rates and raise deposit rates to restore a better balance between offshore wholesale funding and domestic deposits.

Investors have benefited from falling and low interest rates for many years.

Fixed interest portfolios have been deemed low risk in this environment.

Looking forward, pressure on governments to invest more in their economies, larger fiscal deficits and higher inflation in a still heavily indebted world mean investors will need to look for more than income from their investment portfolios.

Fixed income assets will carry higher risk while growth assets will be back in fashion.

Change is the new normal he changing global political backdrop is now ushering in greater fiscal stimulus.

Monetary policy alone has failed to resolve financial, social and economic imbalances and this has led to political change.

Brexit and the election of Trump as the US President are perhaps the most visible signs of the changes, but Europe is about to enter its election cycle with more populist change expected.

While the uncertainty of political change increases risks, growth may well benefit.

Even the starting point is an improvement from the past few years, with the third quarter of 2016 US GDP growth a healthy +3.2 per cent, unemployment dropping to 4.6 per cent and wage inflation picking up.

Trump’s fiscal policies are progrowth, but with the economy already nearing full employment, higher inflation should be anticipated.

Looking to Europe, real growth there is also above trend.

In the shorter-term we expect quantitative easing (QE) measures to be extended, to counter any threats posed by uncertainty impacting the current levels of economic growth.

However, QE is expected to be tapered from the middle of 2017, adding to upward pressure on bond markets.

Longer-term, European breakup risks need to be balanced against the potential benefits of fiscal stimulus.

Political populism is set to bring back inflationary pressures and higher longer term interest rates.

Reviewing equity market returns over the three months to 30 November 2016, returns were mixed, but the fear that accompanied the election of Trump as the US President has subsided, as the markets have focused on the positives that lower taxes and

New Zealand has launched an anti-dumping investigation into Chinese steel – despite the Chinese Government saying the allegations were a “wild guess” with no merit.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) has confirmed the investigation.

Dumping is the exporting of goods cheaper than the products are sold for in a country’s own domestic market, and is illegal under most trade agreements.

MBIE said it had this week started a goods dumping or subsidisation investigation into galvanised steel coil from China.

The investigation application

was from New Zealand Steel, which claimed that imports of Chinese steel coil are being subsidised by the Chinese Government, which has caused “material injury” to the New Zealand industry.

The company is seeking the imposition of provisional countervailing duties.

NZ Steel has publicly warned that a “tremendous surge” in Chinese steel production in the past few years had resulted in more steel that there is world demand, causing job losses around the world.

The season of giving from the heart Sue Newman

T

here are plenty of things in life you can hide from, things you can refuse to take part in, but when it comes to Christmas – not a chance.

From late November the leadup begins. Retailers start counting down the days and no matter how much we might try to ignore the hype, we can’t, and we shouldn’t.

Christmas is now a very different celebration for many families than it was in the past. Gone are the days when the day started with families attending church before heading home or to someone else’s home for a huge roast meal. Now the numbers at Christmas Day services are smaller and for most the origins of the day are all but forgotten. For many, Christmas is about gifts and feasting, but the one thing that hasn’t changed is family.

Whether the festive season has a religious meaning or not, the coming together of families large and small is still very much at the heart of Christmas. For most, making it home or to a family member’s home to celebrate is very much their focus.

The commercialisation of the day, however, is inescapable. We’re bombarded at every turn with messages to spend up large, to buy the ultimate Christmas gift. Fine if money is plentiful, but for growing numbers of Kiwis Christmas is a time of huge stress.

Every week they struggle to make income match essential expenditure and there’s no ability to cope with anything extra. And Christmas is an extra.

We’re fortunate in the Ashburton District there are so many organisations and volunteers who are willing to put their hands up to help people in need. As a community we give and we continue to give and at Christmas that giving is often what makes the difference for some families between having a Christmas and not.

In many ways Christmas has become a season of unrealistic expectations, but what hasn’t changed is that it remains a season where giving is still from the heart.

However you celebrate, wherever you celebrate, may the festive season be one of joy and a time to build happy memories.

Christmas wish Thank you does not even start to convey my appreciation for my “wish” being granted in the lead-up to Christmas My plea for a tidy-up of my garden turned into a full day of work by volunteer Rod Green who not only tidied the garden, but also cut back some overgrown trees, mowed the lawns, and even took the rubbish away.

My garden looks fantastic now, I could never have done this on my own.

The last week, for me, has not been a good one, with illness and a sudden death in my extended family, but this gesture by your paper has lifted my spirits and helped restore my faith in human nature.

We are indeed so very fortunate to live in Ashburton, where people still care about their community, and so generous with their time for others.

I would like to wish all the staff, and their families, a very happy, safe, and blessed Christmas.

Melbourne attack foiled Terrorists planned a Christmas Day bomb attack targeting Melbourne landmarks including Federation Square and Flinders Street Station, police claim.

A major operation between Victoria Police, the Australian Federal Police and Asio foiled the alleged plot.

Five male suspects aged between 20 and 25 were expected to appear in court yesterday charged with acts in preparation of a terrorist event.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said yesterday: “We believe that there was an intention to conduct what we call a multimode attack, possibly on Christmas Day, the possible locations that we have been working on have been Federation Square, Flinders Street Station and St Paul’s Cathedral.”

Police raided a number of properties overnight Thursday in Flemington, Meadow Heights, Dallas, Campbellfield and Gladstone Park, in Melbourne’s northwest.

Ashton said police had been watching the alleged plotters for some time.

“Over that last fortnight that has accelerated,” Ashton said yesterday.

Ashton said police had gathered evidence in the raids that

Melbourne has been targeted by terrorists. the plotters were planning to use explosives in their attack.

“We gathered the makings of an improvised explosive device,” Ashton said.

“A substantial number of

people could have been injured or killed in the attack.”

A man named Ahmed, 31, told the Herald Sun that about 30 officers in riot gear stormed his home in Gladstone Park

about 9pm and took one of his brothers into custody.

About 400 police officers were involved in the raids.

“We think we’ve got everyone involved,” Ashton said.

Four of the five arrested are Australian-born; one has a Lebanese ethnic background and one is an Australian citizen born in Egypt.

“These are self-radicalised, inspired by Isis and Isis propaganda,” Ashton said.

“If this had got under our guard this would have been a significant attack.”

Premier Daniel Andrews said extra police will be on the streets on Christmas Day to ensure the public feel safe. “[The alleged planned attacks] were not acts of faith – they were acts of evil,” Andrews said.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says police and security agencies have disrupted a “very substantial” terrorist plot.

“This news will be of great concern to all Australians,” he said. “We congregate in public places for Christmas, for New Year’s Eve. “It is a time of happiness and joy.

“These terrorists sought to disrupt it. They have been thwarted.”

Amri’s fingerprints found in truck’s cab Tunisian suspect Anis Amri’s fingerprints have been found in the cab of the truck that ploughed into a Christmas market in Berlin, indicating that he was driving the vehicle, German officials said yesterday.

Authorities across Europe were scrambling to find the 24-year-old suspect, a day after Germany issued a wanted no-

tice for him and warned that he may be “violent and armed”.

In Berlin, the Christmas market that was ripped apart by the truck attack reopened, with increased security measures, in a signal of the city’s resilience.

German authorities have offered a reward of up to 100,000 euros ($151,000) for information leading to Amri’s arrest.

Twelve people were killed and 56 wounded in Monday evening’s rampage, which was claimed by the Islamic State group.

“We can tell you today that there are additional indications that this suspect is with high probability really the perpetrator,” Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said after

visiting the Federal Criminal Police Office along with Chancellor Angela Merkel.

“Fingerprints were found in the cab, and there are other, additional indications that suggest this,” he told reporters.

“It is all the more important that the search is successful as soon as possible”.

Indicted in Argentina A court in Argentina has indicted Justin Bieber for allegedly sending his bodyguards to beat up a photographer and take his camera equipment outside a Buenos Aires nightclub three years ago. Court clerk Soledad Nieto confirmed the decision yesterday. She said Judge Alberto Banos did not issue an arrest warrant and the Canadian pop idol can appeal the court decision.

Argentine photographer Diego Pesoa alleges he was chased down and beaten on November 9, 2013, by Bieber’s bodyguards outside the INK nightclub, where the singer and his entourage partied during his South American tour.

Evacuation of Aleppo completed The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) says the week-long operation to evacuate tens of thousands of people from east Aleppo as well as two Shi’ite villages in Syria’s Idlib province is complete.

“All civilians who wished to be evacuated have been, as well as wounded and fighters,” ICRC spokeswoman Krista Armstrong said.

The aid agency led the complex operation in snowy winter conditions with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent.

The Syrian army said it had retaken complete control of Aleppo yesterday after the last rebel fighters were evacuated from the war-battered city, handing President Bashar al-Assad his biggest victory of the nearly six-year-old war.

‘Heard should pay fees’ Johnny Depp wants Amber Heard to pay $144,000 in legal fees. The Danish Girl actress had reached an agreement with the 52-year-old actor in August, that he would pay her $10 million in their divorce settlement, but Johnny has yet to hand over the cash and now he wants Amber to pay part of his attorney fees, Entertainment Tonight reports.

In a new court filing, Johnny’s lawyer Laura Wasser states: “The impact of her relentless pursuit on Johnny – the damage her false allegations have caused his personal and professional reputation, his and his family’s emotional well-being, and his finances – appears to be of no interest to Amber.”

FIRE RESTRICTIONS Notice is hereby given that pursuant to the provisions of Section 22.2 of the Forest and Rural Fires Act 1977 the following fire season is in force from midnight Saturday 24 December 2016 until further notice.

HIGH COUNTRY (Ashburton Lakes / Rakaia Gorge / Rangitata Gorge / Mackenzie Basin /Hakataramea Valley) A restricted fire season in the area of the MidSouth Canterbury Rural Fire Authority west of a line from Rakaia River up Hutt Stream and along the ridge to Mount Hutt thence a line to Mount Alford to Mount Somers to Mount Barrosa and the Rangitata River up Boundary Stream to Coal Hill following the District Council boundary to Mt Musgrove along the top of the Two Thumbs, Rollesby, Dalgety Ranges, Hunter Hills to Mt Blyth, Campbell Hills to Station Peak to the Waitaki River.

FOREST AREAS A restricted fire season is imposed over the area of the Geraldine (Kakahu, Saddle Peak, Raincliff and Pioneer Park), Waimate, Pentland, Athlone Forests and a 1km boundary surrounding same. This area of restriction is in force 365 days per year. All landowners within these forest areas will be notified in writing.

During the Restricted Fire Season it is an offence to light any fires in the open air unless a permit has been obtained with the exception of: 1. Barbecues lit in properly constructed containers and fuelled with gas, solid or liquid fuel; and cooking fires at camping sites lit within a concrete or stone surround no larger than 1 metre in diameter; all with not less than 3 metres of ground surrounding the container cleared of all combustible material.

2. Approved Incinerators used for the disposal of household rubbish with an area of not less than 3 metres cleared of all combustible material.

Provided: that no such fires shall be lit when high or gusty winds are prevailing.

3. A ban on all fires on any day or days of extreme fire hazard as broadcast under Section 20 of the Act takes precedence over this notice.

4. In all cases, a person lighting a fire within these provisions shall remain in attendance at the fire until it is fully extinguished.

5. It is no legal defence against claims for damage caused by the fire that the fire was of type or lit at a time permitted by this notice.

Please note: The above exceptions do not apply to the Te Moana Gorge Area.

For further information or permits within the above area please contact the Mid-South Canterbury Rural Fire Authority at telephone (03) 687 7200.

24 hours notice is required for issue of permits.

Inspections may be carried out to ensure landowner compliance with permit conditions.

Permittee’s are advised that the Mid-South Canterbury Rural Fire Authority has a policy of cost recovery wherever possible. In the permittee’s own interest it is advisable to have public liability and fire suppression insurance suitable for the land conditions.
