Lake Hood’s trial boat registration programme is set to become compulsory in the New Year.

The initiative was put in place by Lake Hood Aquatic Park management in partnership with Environment Canterbury in December 2013 to monitor boaties’ behaviour.

It was the first trial of its kind in the

South Island and about 1400 boaties have registered, however, it had no teeth and unregistered boats could still legally use the lake, Lake Hood manager Gilbert Murdoch said.

That is about to change. With the new regulations soon to come into play, unregistered craft will not be able to launch and lake officials will have the authority to suspend or ban vessels not displaying the correct information.

It will become mandatory for lake users with vessels over 10-horsepower to register before launching.

A sticker will then be issued with the owner’s trailer registration number printed on it, to be displayed on either the side of the boat.

Harry picks veteran for card Prince Harry has chosen a picture of himself with a Battle of Britain veteran as the image for his Christmas card.

The picture shows Harry clasping the hand of 95-yearold Tom Neil, an ex-wing commander and Hurricane and Spitfire pilot, who fought in the famous aerial battle. The photograph was taken on the day a Battle of Britain flypast was held to mark the 75th anniversary of the conflict. The prince celebrated his 31st birthday that day – September 15 – and was due to fly in one of four two-seater Spitfires taking part. However, when one of the vintage aircraft developed mechanical problems, he stepped aside to give Neil his place. A Kensington Palace spokesman said: “Prince Harry has chosen this photograph with Battle of Britain veteran Tom Neil for his Christmas card. He considered it a great honour to meet Tom during the Battle of Britain flypast in September. It was one of his most memorable moments of 2015.”

Groceries and a baby A Hamilton woman has received an early Christmas present – her baby delivered during a morning trip to the supermarket.

The woman was in the carpark of Countdown when she went into labour and gave birth Tuesday morning. Store manager Pete Lawrence said the first he knew of it was when an ambulance pulled up. He understood the woman had just done a bit of shopping in store when she went into labour. “Lots of the customers were assisting to make sure she had some privacy.” Mr Lawrence said despite the unconventional birthing place it all seemed to go smoothly. “It was real quick, 20 or 25 minutes and she was taken to hospital.” He said it was the first time he’d seen a baby born in a supermarket carpark. Mr Lawrence said Countdown wanted to give the new parents a special Christmas baby package if the parents wanted to make themselves known.

Make sure your friends get home

Ashburton police are reminding festive season revellers to ensure their friends get home safely after a drunk man was found lying on the road.

Police were called to the incident at 9.30pm on Monday, at Tinwald. The man was lying partially on the road and footpath.

Mid Canterbury has had three fatalities in recent years, where people have been socialising and then decided to walk home or to a friend’s place, but never made it.

In December 2008 23-year-old Stewart Howell of Ashburton was walking home from end-of-year celebrations and run over on Albert Street at about 1am.

He was intoxicated and it was believed he was lying on the road when he was hit.

In April 2012 a Hinds 19-yearold was intoxicated and probably asleep when he was hit by a train after leaving the Hinds Tavern.

In April 2014 18-year-old Danny Hendriks of Rakaia was struck by a car while lying on the road just outside the township late on

a Saturday night.

Ashburton senior sergeant Scott Banfield said Ashburton was not unique in having such fatalities, and reports came in from around the country.

He urged people celebrating over Christmas and New Year to make sure their friends got home safely.

“You go out for a great night,

and drink, so be it, but make sure your friends get home. Make sure they don’t become a victim,” Mr Banfield said.

Mr Banfield’s warning follows Auckland police reminding revellers not to stagger home along the city’s motorways.

It was particularly dangerous at night, when pedestrians could be difficult to see.

Good company and plenty of Christmas cheer will fill the hearts of more than 130 people at the Ashburton District Christmas Community Lunch tomorrow.

Among them will be Ashburton great grandmother Betty Weastell, who has been attending the event ever since it was first held by the Ashburton New Life Church over 10 years ago.

Today it is a community initiative, and one Mrs Weastell, a widow and last surviving sibling, is grateful for.

“After all is said and done you don’t really want to be on your own at Christmas,” the 90-yearold said.

Mrs Weastell’s Christmases of old were spent with her parents and three older siblings as she grew up on a two-acre property at Little River.

It was the days of travel by horse and cart, or bicycle, and not all the extended family could get together on the day.

“You still got as many of your relatives as you could, but now they just fly off in all directions,” Mrs Weastell said.

She and her late husband Neale had three sons, one of whom passed away about 20 years ago.

She stays in touch and has a good relationship with her two remaining sons, one at Waiouru and one in Christchurch, however, their plans do not match for Christmas Day.

And that’s fine by Mrs Weastell, who enjoys catching up with old friends, and making new friends, at the community lunch.

“And it’s a beautiful meal they put on, and those that help are fantastic.”

One of those people is Mrs Weastell’s friend, Ann Gourdie, who began helping at the Christ-

mas lunch about seven years ago after her husband passed away.

The 78-year-old great grandmother has three adult children living in Ashburton, who make sure she knows she is welcome at their Christmas celebrations.

“And the day I won’t be able to help (at the lunch) may arrive one day, but in the meantime I

want to give,” Mrs Gourdie said.

Organiser Ann Allott said 135 people would be dining, and that included helpers.

There was room for more and anyone wishing to come along could phone her on 308-0333 or turn up on the day.

It begins midday at the Sinclair Centre.

From P1 “We were looking for a way to have some control over who was using the lake – knowing whose boat is whose – putting an owner to a boat is a big part in managing behaviour,” Mr Murdoch said.

Mr Murdoch said 99.9 per cent of lake users were now abiding by the rules, with just the occasional renegade pulled up by the jet ski patrollers who monitor behaviour.

He flagged the directional rule which applies to all users, as the most important in terms of safety, but other requirements, such as the five knot rule would also be enforced.

Correctly fitted life jackets are compulsory for all lake users, and it is the responsibility of the skipper to ensure compliance.

With the lake getting busier by the year, Mr Murdoch said it was in everyone’s interest comply with the rules and to look after each other.

Five new classrooms on the horizon

Five new classrooms are in the pipeline for Mid Canterbury schools next year.

The Ministry of Education has approved funding for three additional classrooms at Methven Primary School and two at Hampstead Primary School.

Planning is already under way

for the two new Methven classrooms and work has started on Hampstead’s new classrooms, Ministry of Education’s acting head of education infrastructure Gary Anaru said.

Ashburton Borough School has received approval for another four classrooms which are currently in the planning stage, while Rakaia School gained approval

for two more classrooms last year.

These are now under construction, along with work on two replacement classrooms.

Mt Somers Springburn School also has a building project on the go, with the new multi-purpose room, including a kitchen, scheduled for completion in March.

An upgrade on classrooms at

Dorie School is under way.

Mid Canterbury school rolls have been escalating for several years and show no sign of levelling off in the near future, putting pressure on classroom space.

Ashburton Collage principal Grant McMillan highlighted the need for at least two new classrooms earlier this week, but said this would only tide the school

over in the interim.

Long-term provisions needed to be put in place for more teaching space to accommodate a population bulge currently working its way through the district’s primary schools.

Allenton Primary School has also flagged a need for new classrooms to meet projected roll growth in the future.

Union here to support staff

Ashburton residents can expect to see the Tertiary Education Union’s presence in the district from next year.

It was announced in November that Aoraki Polytechnic would be disestablished and merged with Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT) to form a new institution, CPIT Aoraki, on December 31.

Tertiary Education Union (TEU) organiser Kris Smith said they held a rally with students, staff and union delegates in Timaru in November and hoped to do the same in Ashburton next year.

“In the New Year we are hoping to have a presence in Ashburton.”

Ashburton has a growing population and they wanted to have a presence in Ashburton to support staff and make sure there was a retention of face-toface delivery of education in the area.

There had been some concerns that while government had promised there would be more opportunities available for students in Ashburton a lot of it might be online teaching, she said.

“We believe there should be more [face-to-face education] happening in the area.”

With just over a week until the merge there had already been two courses cut in Timaru and at least four people made redundant, Ms Smith said.

While she could not discuss

Ashburton directly because it was a small group of staff, she could say that the closure of an animal care and sport and fitness course had led to redundancies and some senior staff would not have a job due to replications of positions.

There were also 16 people, some TEU members and some not, who had chosen not to transfer to the new institution, she said.

For some it was an opportunity to pursue different careers and for others the whole period before the merge had been so stressful they decided to leave.

“This year has been very unclear for lots of people, I think the morale has been very low.”

People who were moving over to the new institution also

had no idea how their positions would fit with the new structure.

“There will be ongoing changes.”

Staff members in Ashburton had not only been concerned about their own future but also about ensuring good quality education was continued in the area, Ms Smith said.

Aoraki Polytechnic chief executive Alex Cabrera said staff had all been consulted during the transition period and it was anticipated most Aoraki employees would be transferred to the new entity.

In regards to courses being cut, whether or not a particular programme ran was dependent on a variety of factors including student demand and the needs of employers, he said.

Christmas just another day for firefighters

While most will be relaxing with backyard cricket, turkey and carols on Christmas Day, members of the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade know they may get called out to a fire, a car crash or other mishap.

Chief fire officer Alan Burgess will be among those few whose celebrations with family could be interrupted while presents are unwrapped, Christmas pudding is being eaten or the Queen’s message is on TV. However, when those callouts happen, Mr Burgess is never frustrated or upset.

“It’s just part of the job. There’s not much you can do about it.

“Things can go wrong regardless of whether it’s a holiday or not.

“It’s the nature of the game, unfortunately.”

For the past few years the brigade has had at least one callout at Christmas.

In 2013, they attended an incident in which someone got stuck in the springs of a trampoline they had received as a Christmas present and last year was a smoke-filled house.

“It really is business as usual.”

Not every firefighter has to stay in town over Christmas, but the ones who do know they need to be available to respond to a callout at any time.

Vehicle fire Police are investigating a vehicle fire that occurred on Beach Road at 11.16pm on Tuesday. Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Alan Burgess said one appliance was sent to the blaze, which was being treated as suspicious. The car was derelict with pieces missing and had been sitting on the side of the road for a few days. Fire crews spent 30 minutes at the scene and the incident was referred to police.

Council on call The doors might be closed, but the Ashburton District Council will still be dealing with service requests during the ChristmasNew Year period. The council will lock the doors of its civic offices from 12.30pm today and unlock them again for normal business at 8.30am on January 5. Any requests for service during this period can be phoned through to the council on 307-7700 as its 24-hour answering service will be operating. All calls will be answered and urgent requrests for service will be attended to by on-call staff. Non-urgent requests will be attended to from January 5. The opening hours of council owned facilities can be found on the council’s website www.adc. govt.nz

Death on Mt Cook The woman who died after falling 300m on Mt Cook was a 29-year-old Australian, police said yesterday. Canterbury Police were notified after a personal locator beacon activation on the Eugenie Glacier, in the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park shortly after 8am yesterday. “When the rescue teams responded they found a 29-year-old Australian woman had fallen approximately 300m from near the top of the peak on to the glacier,” said Inspector Dave Gaskin.

“She was airlifted to the Aoraki Mount Cook Search and Rescue Base where she received medical treatment. Unfortunately she passed away a short time later.”

“Anyone who is in town is on call.”

That’s not to say they can’t enjoy themselves, they just need

to make sure they stay within the drink-driving limit and are able to leave festivities at a moment’s notice.

Each crew member belongs to the brigade knowing that there is a possibility they will get called out at any time of the day or night regardless of

whether it is Christmas Day or a regular working day, Mr Burgess said.

Most years Mr Burgess opens his home for a few hours on Christmas morning to members of the brigade to pop in for a chat before having his usual meal with family.

A drunk driver whose keys were confiscated yesterday morning in the Waikato after he was caught four times over the legal limit was stopped by police a second time, just an hour and a half later, behind the wheel of the same vehicle.

Police caught the 37-year-old male after being alerted by members of the public in Morrinsville at about 8.30am. He was stopped in his utility vehicle on Studholme St and when breathalysed by police, returned a test result of 1020mgs.

The legal alcohol limit for an adult driver is 250mgs.

Dotcom loses extradition A New Zealand judge has ruled that colourful Internet entrepreneur Kim Dotcom and three of his colleagues can be extradited to the United States to face criminal copyright charges. Dotcom’s lawyers said they will appeal the decision.

Judge Nevin Dawson’s ruling yesterday comes nearly four years after US authorities shut down Dotcom’s Megaupload website, which some visitors had used to illegally download songs and movies. The US has charged the men with conspiracy to commit copyright infringement, racketeering and money laundering. If found guilty, they could face decades in jail. The case could have broader implications for Internet copyright rules. Dotcom’s lawyer Ron Mansfield said earlier that if the US side prevails, websites from YouTube to Facebook would need to more carefully police their content.

Man alive after 60 hours A migrant worker was pulled out alive yesterday after he was buried for more than 60 hours in a massive landslide that swept through part of a major manufacturing city in southern China. Rao Liangzhong of the Shenzhen Emergency Response Office said that man, Tian Zeming, was rescued around dawn. More than 70 people are still missing from the landslide that happened Sunday when a mountain of construction waste material and mud collapsed and flowed into an industrial park in Shenzhen.

UN demands aid drop in Syria Facing a worsening humanitarian crisis in Syria, the United Nations Security Council unanimously approved a resolution demanding that all combatants but especially the Syrian government allow the urgent delivery of desperately needed food and medicine to more than 13.5 million people.

The council expressed “outrage” at the escalating violence in Syria, grave distress at “the devastating humanitarian situation” and growing concern at the increasing impediments to the delivery of aid, especially across front lines in the conflict.

The resolution extends the authorisation for cross-border aid deliveries until Jan. 10, 2017.

It previously authorised deliveries through four crossings — two in Turkey, one in Iraq that has not been used, and one in Jordan.

Of the more than 13.5 million people in need of food and medical assistance inside the country, the council said 6.5 million have fled their homes, 4.5 million including Palestinian refugees are living in hardto-reach areas, and 393,700 are trapped in besieged areas.

It expressed “grave alarm” especially for those in besieged areas where the UN was only able to reach 3.5 per cent with health assistance and just 0.7 per cent with food monthly in 2015.

Terror accused in court Sydney’s Woolloomooloo naval base was listed as a potential target in documents linked to two men arrested in counter-terrorism raids in the city’s west.

The pair is set to face terrorism charges after Australian Federal Police and NSW Police Force officers raided homes in Bankstown and Merrylands yesterday.

Both men are expected to appear in Sydney courts later. Their arrests follow the seizure of documents and other material in raids carried out last year.

The raids took place under Operation Appleby, which started in September last year and has been focusing on a group of about 20 young men who police believe are committed to carrying out a terrorist attack in Australia.

“We will allege that the Woolloomooloo navy base was one of those locations,” NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Catherine Burn told reporters in Sydney.

Ms Burn said it had been a complex, long-standing investigation into alleged terrorism plots to carry out an attack in NSW. “Since that time we have conducted a number of investigative strategies and this has resulted in us arresting and charging 11 people with terrorism offences and related offences in regards to this alleged terrorist attack,” she said.

The latest arrests take the total of people charged under Operation Appleby to 13.

A 24-year-old man is expected to be charged with making a document likely to facilitate a terrorist attack, which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

A 20-year-old is set to be charged with conspiracy to do an act in preparation to commit a terrorist act, an offence that carries a penalty of life imprisonment.

Police say a truck crash stranded thousands of piglets and drivers on a highway in North Carolina. Authorities say the tractortrailer carrying more than 2000 piglets overturned yesterday on Interstate 40 south of downtown Raleigh, causing damage that triggered traffic problems for hours.

Drone guides icebreaker Australian expeditioners have for the first time used a drone to help guide their ship through sea ice en route to Antarctica.

Fitted with a camera, the unmanned aerial vehicle was sent into the sky five times above the icebreaker Aurora Australis as it navigated its way to Casey Station last week. On deck at the controls was James Rennie who said technicians overcame many challenges including that the drone’s batteries struggled at times in the cold conditions. But the benefits of quick, realtime imagery outweighed any hurdles.

Christmas a time for giving thanks Sue Newman

C

hristmas means different things to different people.

For some it’s a day of high celebration where the traditions of Christmas past are observed – music, food, family and gift giving. For others it’s a low-key affair, perhaps a barbecue in the backyard.

However it’s celebrated, Christmas is still one of the few times in the year when most people’s thoughts turn to family. For some that might be family they’re geographically separated from, for others it could be family that lives in the same town.

Not everyone, however, has family with whom they can share this special time – death, estrangement or simply distance mean there are many in our community for whom Christmas is a time that also brings sadness.

In most families there are gaps around the table, missing faces and, while that’s a time of sadness, it can also be a time of looking back and remembering that person, reminiscing about the joy they brought to Christmas.

The missing faces that are the saddest, however, are those brought about by family estrangements, rifts that have torn families apart where brothers, sisters, parents no longer communicate with one another.

Minor grievance becomes major issues, resolutions aren’t found and rifts that seem too hard to heal open up.

Time makes those rifts seem insurmountable no matter how much one party may want to bridge the gap. Life sometimes simply gets in the way.

Whether or not your family circle is complete, Christmas is a time to look back and to give thanks for all the good things in life.

Yes, most of us will never have everything we think we want or need, but for most, if we put our heads above the horizon and check out what many others do not have, we’ll see that our lot is not too bad. Unlike millions around the world, we live in a country where just about anything is possible.

However you celebrate your Christmas, whatever the day means to you and yours, the best of wishes from the Guardian family to yours.

May the day be everything you want it to be.

PM makes fool of himself, again W

ith his latest ill-judged escapade, John Key seems more to have disgraced than simply made a fool of himself, though, certainly, that too.

He apparently allowed himself to be “entrapped” by a couple of radio “jocks” who doubtless, could not believe their luck when the Prime Minister of Aotearoa, New Zealand – a title he often forgets he bears – agreed to take part in what can only be described as a sordid interview involving the highly controversial topic of rape, accompanied by “suitable” but objectionable “props”.

His inevitable “explanation” for this latest lapse – that he was simply trying to get into the “spirit of the occasion”, Christmas, presumably – was every bit as feeble as it sounded.

He also attempted to “sing” a funny song, the words of which seemed to be his and equally unappealing. How anyone could be as flint-headed as to make facetious comments about rape and take part in some kind of virtual exploitation of that vile practice defies belief, least of all by a current “western” prime minister.

Mr Key must somehow be under the impression he has established such a degree of popularity he simply can do no wrong, however outlandish and

offensive. What with the now infamous “ponytail gate” one might have expected our revered leader to steer clear of further embarrassing gaffes, but then he doesn’t see them as such so presumably we can expect more of them in the New Year.

Can it really be so difficult for the Opposition to make stick some of the mud stirred up by these demeaning antics? No PM in the history of politics, anywhere, I would guess, can have behaved so incomprehensively yet, apparently, also with complete impunity to the votecatching scorn of his opposition.

Surely, next year, Mr Key will have to pull in his horns and, as well, his minders get a real grip on his “playful” japes.

Eventually, one of these said japes really will cost him and he will, at last, discover what creeping unpopularity does to one’s hopes, chances and dreams of a fourth consecutive term in office.

Meanwhile, as I write, the last touches are being put by Bishop

Victoria Matthews, Anglican Bishop of Christchurch, to her statement regarding the future of “her” cathedral, that benighted, law-ravaged building and the cause of so much long-drawnout angst and uncertainty.

The city is agog to know her thoughts. However, it hardly requires a degree in ecclesiastical engineering to anticipate Bishop Victoria offering her dwindling flock a compromise whereby the beyond-repair damaged parts of the “iconic” centre of Christchurch are replaced by something modern and the thought-provoking, while the other affected areas repaired using the money offered by former Cabinet Minister Philip Burdon and sundry other members of the Canterbury aristocracy, some of whom reside in London and elsewhere.

All of which will probably mean that no-one is happy with the outcome of the bishop’s master plan and the wrangling will thus continue in the law courts, at the well-heeled dinner tables of Fendalton and even where “two or three are gathered together”.

I am on the edge of my pew in eager anticipation and will bring you the news just has soon as Bishop Victoria has spoken.

Should time and deadline allow, I will add an instant, “white hot” comment and try to capture the mood of the citizens

in the immediate aftermath of the bishop’s historic theological pronouncement.

In the meantime, all of us are doing our best to keep the lid on our potentially explosive feelings of expectancy in which I, too, am caught up.

However, I have not lost the plot to the point of failing to wish all the wise readers of The Guardian the merriest and most peaceful of Christmases, which I do most sincerely, here and now.

H– – LATE NEWSFLAS CHRISTCHURCH CATHEDRAL “REPRIEVED”. “PREPARED TO CONSIDER ITS REINSTATEMENT,” says Bishop Victoria, “BUT THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT FINANCIAL SHORTFALL.” Thus, open slather for squabbling to recommence.

Some will argue for immediate repair, to hell (if you’ll pardon the expression) with the expense; others will point out the long list of recovery projects which are just as important although the individual cost of many will be far less than the vast bill for the re-invented cathedral.

So, it looks like “business as usual” as it has been for the past five years.

New face on committee has long ties to district

Longbeach Station owner Bill Thomas has been appointed to the Ashburton Zone Committee.

The committee represents community aspirations for delivering sustainable water management.

Mr Thomas replaces Sheryl Stivens who resigned recently having sat on the committee since its inception in 2010, as part of the Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS).

He had considered nominating himself for a seat on the committee for a while, but decided now was the time.

“I think farmers need to be well represented on the committee and because we’ve been farming all our lives here we have a good understanding of the issues for farmers, but also for the community,” he said.

However, Mr Thomas’ association with the property goes much deeper than his and his wife Penny’s involvement.

He is the great great grandson of one of the district’s most prominent pioneers John Grigg, who founded Longbeach 150 years ago.

“I would like to see the relationship between farmers and the community as harmonious as possible.

“The farm is used for public events, such as the Longbeach Coastal Challenge, so hopefully we are in touch with both the ru-

“The zone committee is a link between the two councils (Ashburton District Council and Environment Canterbury) so we are looking for a good consensus.

Obviously water is a huge issue for Mid Canterbury and everyone has a vested interest in it, in all sorts of ways. I would like to have an input into that.”

Recently the committee has focused on working with the community to develop recom-

mendations around the Hinds catchment.

To date Mr Thomas has remained independent from groups such as the Hinds Drains Working Party in the discussions surrounding the Hinds Drains, but acknowledged the work they had done towards Variation II to the proposed Canterbury Land and Water Plan.

“There’s a lot of people with knowledge and we need to listen to them to make sure there’s a good link between all those various groups when the message gets back to the commissioners.

“Hopefully we can act in good common-sense – it comes down to that,” he said.

Mr Thomas is a member of the Eiffelton Irrigation Scheme and has 17 years’ experience as a commercial director, including directorship of PGG Wrightson.

Te Runanga o Arowhenua chairman John Henry recently replaced Karl Russell as the Arowhenua representative on the committee. Mr Henry also returned to sit on the Timaru District Council in October, having resigned six years earlier.

Donna Field was reappointed to chair the committee, a position she has occupied for the past two years.

The other community representatives on the Ashburton Zone Committee are Ben Curry, Jackie Wright, Chris Allen, Gordon Guthrie and Craig Fowles.

Christina Robb said the selection process focused on finding people who can see others’ points of views and work collaboratively to find solutions for water issues.

“The CWMS is an innovative approach to managing fresh water – it’s about finding the best ways to restore our environment and provide for viable farming and communities throughout the region,” she said.

“We were pleased with the quality of the applicants and we’re sure the committee has a good balance of community representatives who are passionate about making a positive difference to local water management.

“By reappointing Donna the selection panel recognised her contribution and commitment to the committee over many years.

They also appreciated the knowledge and expertise in the irrigation sector that bill will bring.”

The zone committee, one of 10 operating throughout Canterbury, is focused on local actions to deliver the goals of the CWMS by encouraging good management practices from all land users and improving natural values while allowing for a reliable and safe water supply, she said.

Next year the committee will continue its work with is neighbouring zones on delivering CWMS goals in alpine and braided rivers and begin community discussions on environmental limits for the area between the Ashburton and Rakaia rivers.

China cements top position

BY TINA MORRISON China cemented its position as New Zealand’s top export destination in November, as increased shipments of milk powder, butter and beef to Asia’s largest economy contrasted with a decline in crude oil sales to Australia.

Goods exported to China soared 17 per cent to $803 million in November from the year earlier month, taking annual exports to the country to $8.53 billion, Statistics New Zealand said. Exports to Australia slipped 4.1 per cent to $726 million in the month, for an annual total of $8.33 million, the agency said.

China had fallen behind Australia as New Zealand’s top export destination from March through September this year as dairy exports to the world’s second-largest economy waned, however it returned to the top spot in October, taking $52 million more in annual exports than Australia, and that gap widened to $200 million in the latest November fig-

In the month of November, New Zealand exports rose 1 per cent to $4.08 billion from the year earlier month, ahead of expectations for $3.9 billion. The increase was led by exports of meat and edible offal, the country’s second-largest export commodity, which gained 23 per cent to $502 million, helped by exports of beef and lamb. Fruit exports jumped 65 per cent to $59 million, led by kiwifruit.

In contrast, exports of dairy products, the country’s largest commodity export, declined 3.3 per cent to $1.2 billion as prices fell while quantities increased 15 per cent.

Meanwhile, imports slid 12 per cent to $4.86 billion from November last year, ahead of expectations of $4.75 billion. The gain was led by a 42 per cent increase in capital goods, amid increased shipments of transport equipment and machinery and plant.

Imports of consumption goods rose 19 per cent, while imports of fuels, lubricants and crude oil declined.

The New Zealand dollar was little changed as the looming Christmas holiday thinned out trading activity, while US and local data kept the economic outlook largely intact.

The kiwi edged up to 68.14 US cents at 5pm yesterday in Wellington from 68.06 cents at 8am and 68.05 cents on Tuesday. The tradeweighted index was unchanged at 74.02.

Trading activity in the local session remained light ahead of the Christmas and New Year holi-

days. New Zealand’s November trade deficit was slightly smaller than expectations, while US data showed slightly faster economic growth through the third quarter than anticipated, though American house sales were slowed by new regulations.

“People are just squaring up their long (US) dollar positions as they look to take a holiday and come back in the new year,” said Mark Johnson, senior dealer foreign exchange at OMF in Wellington, referring to the practice of investors betting an asset will appreciate.

“The kiwi has been trading in a pretty small range.”

New Zealand’s two-year swap rate increased one basis point to 2.85 per cent at 5pm in Wellington, while 10-year swaps increased three basis points to 3.73 per cent.

The local currency was little changed at 94.17 Australian cents from 94.28 cents yesterday, and rose to 4.4124 Chinese yuan from 4.4076 yuan. It was little changed at 82.44 yen from 82.52 yen on Tuesday, and traded at 62.24 euro cents from 62.32 cents. It increased to 45.93 British pence from 45.71 pence.

Seeka Kiwifruit Industries, the largest kiwifruit grower in Australia and New Zealand, says profit for 2015 will be at the upper end of its guidance as insurance claims related to a fire at its Oakside plant are settled.

In August the company said it expected profit to rise between 30 and 40 per cent in calendar 2015, with shares hitting an eight-year high of $3.75 off the back of the announcement. However in October it warned investors that profit could be lower due to uncertainty about whether some of the fruit lost in the fire in the Bay of Plenty was insured, and

said profit could be anywhere between 10 and 40 per cent above 2014 levels.

The company today said net profit would be between 25 and 35 per cent above 2014 levels, driven by improved results from its Glassfields divison, which provides ripening and delivery services to retailers. Profit from New Zealand operations is expected to be between $3.96 million and $4.27 million.

Seeka also paid just over $4 million to its pool of growers to maintain payments and minimise the risk of loss from the fruit that was destroyed or damaged in the fire. This money will be recovered from any further insurance proceeds should the claim be ac-

cepted by the insurer, it said.

The cost of this payment to growers is built into its profit forecast, and Seeka said there is potential for further upside in the event of an insurance payout.

However, Seeka warned its new Australian business will deliver an after tax loss in the first year of its operation of between $750,000 to $1 million due to transaction costs and stamp duty.

It bought Bunbartha Fruit Packers for $A22 million in August, and the company says the business is proceeding well. It’s expected to be profitable in 2016.

Shares in Seeka rose 0.3 percent, or 10 cents, to $3.37 and have risen by 7 percent since the start of the year.

Rallying around E

arly in the New Year I’m planning to visit Diane and Tony Adams and I’m looking forward to that.

I mention this for two reasons.

Firstly because although we have been lifelong friends we don’t catch up as often as we would like.

Well at least as often as I would like, hopefully they feel the same.

Consequently if I arrive at their door unannounced it could be a bit of a shock, so if they read this they will have some advance warning.

The other reason for mentioning this is twofold.

Obviously it will be good to catch up and I have something to deliver to Tony.

Now if you are reading this Tony don’t get too excited, sorry to disappoint you but it’s not a Christmas present meant for you but inadvertently left down our chimney by the nice old fella in red.

Well it wouldn’t be would it – after all we haven’t got a chimney!

Ah ha, maybe that’s why some of the requested prezzies haven’t arrived.

Memo to self - make sure Santa knows we haven’t got a chimney, let him know parked in the drive will be fine.

Whoops, got a bit sidetracked, getting back to taking something to Tony, the item being delivered relates to his role as Cup Custodian for the local branch of the Vintage Car Club.

The Ashburton Vintage Car Club’s annual rally is always rated one of the most popular events on the calendar.

Just between us and please don’t let it go any further it was the Hard Luck Trophy.

The circumstances relating to us winning it have been documented, suffice to say it was well deserved.

Roger kept it for six months and then kindly passed it on to me.

So with the Vintage Car Club Annual Rally, which is one of the major events on their calendar now less than

a month away our tenure is coming to an end and it’s time to give the trophy back.

Roger and I plan to go on the rally again this year.

Apparently there is nothing in the rules to say competitors can’t win the cup more than once, but we won’t mind if someone else gets it next year.

Not that we wish anyone misfortune nor are we ungrateful that our dilemma of getting a flat tyre did not go

For my part I accept all of the blame because the tyre that went down was on my side of the car!

And I also accept that I obviously disappointed many people who felt there would be enough “hot air” on the side where I was sitting to perhaps prevent it happening or at least remedy the situation.

For my part I’m still not convinced the Reserve Bank did not somehow conjure the whole thing up as an indication that the rate of inflation is low.

The trophy has been a reminder of a fun day’s motoring, one of many similar events which it’s been great to be involved with during the year.

Those occasions have all been reminders that enthusiasm for motoring is truly alive and well in our part of the country, thanks of course to the people who organise events and those who support them.

And it’s really great to know that so many great things are planned for next year.

It’s been good having the trophy and it will be fun returning it and catching up with Diane and Tony.

Maybe, actually almost certainly, we’ll recall some great memories like that time we . . .

s you know, I travel all around the world.

Everywhere I go is nice but I’ll let you in on a little secret, I think Mid Canterbury is one of the best places on the planet.

I‘ve always thought it’s got everything going for it - great folk, wonderful facilities and lovely scenery.

Last week when I was reading the Ashburton Guardian (which is my favourite newspaper) I was delighted to see Bruce Moffatt’s column last week reminding people that there is a lot to see and do so close to home.

Bruce who is general manager of Experience Mid Canterbury encouraged readers to visit these delightful places over the holiday period and I do too.

But whether it be close to home or further afield please take care on the roads.

Of course coming from the North Pole, a summer Christmas takes a bit of getting used to and usually I’m only in your part of the world when it’s warm, although I have been told it’s sometimes cold and even snows.

So when it snowed this year I though it would be good to take a break and see what Mid Canterbury is like in the winter.

It was magnificent!

And now I know first-hand Mid Canterbury is a wonderful place all year round.

So please enjoy it.

My sleigh is great but I also like cars and during my trip I was able visit Colin and Cathy Sweetman’s magnificent collection.

That was fun!

Age Concern Ashburton More than 60 members attended the Age Concern annual Christmas function held at the Senior Centre on December 4. The programme included entertainment, games, carol singing and concluded with afternoon tea refreshments. A certificate of recognition was presented to Milner Jacob, who is retiring from our Courtesy Driving service after 16 years of contribution.

We are pleased to advise of a very enthusiastic response from participating services to join our Positive Ageing Expo to be held at the Ashburton Racecourse on Thursday March 3 2016. Mark this date on your new calendar! You will not want to miss such a great opportunity to learn what is on offer for our more mature citizens.

ConAid have ended 2015 in style by taking out the latest round of the Terrace Downs Fast Fours tennis competition, despite the action being called off on Tuesday evening due to the dismal weather.

Connor Brosnahan and Aiden Mitchell make up the victorious ConAid team, but it was far from an easy path to the section one triumph for the young pair.

Brosnahan and Mitchell saw off ALSB’s Ash-

leigh Leonard and Edwin Dargue in week one, but fell to losses against eventual fourth placegetters Scruff & Co and runners-up Heineken Openers in weeks two and three respectively.

In week four, ConAid were awarded their second win after Feutz Brothers defaulted, to set up a mouth-watering week five.

Scruff & Co, Heineken Openers and KBT were all in the running for the division spoils before the decision was made to cancel Tuesday’s fixtures, and award the round to ConAid. Fast Fours will return on January 19.

Ashburton Club & MSA Golf Section Our final outing for 2015 was our Xmas match at the Tinwald Golf Club December 6. Lindsay organised a team stableford President v Captain match with best individual stableford only counting on each hole. We then had a short talk from Shirley Noon about her interesting life which was followed by a recital from The Variety Group, musicians and singers of Christmas cheer after which we went to the Masonic Lodge for our Christmas Lunch which was very good.

January is going to be a busy month for local sprint car driver Matt Honeywell.

The 39-year-old will compete in the latest round of the War of the Wings South Island Series in Cromwell on December 30, where he will hope to defend his place at the top of the points table.

Honeywell will then return to Cromwell for the New Zealand Sprint Car Grand Prix on January

9, before competing at the Salute to Goodie and the Sprint Car Gold Cup in Ruapuna on January 13 and 16 respectively.

Despite being at the top of the ladder in the War of the Wings, Honeywell has experienced some problems behind the wheel of his Maxim sprint car this season.

“I haven’t won, I’ve just been consistent, things haven’t exactly gone to plan but we’ve been thereabouts,” he said.

“We’ve had a couple of teeth-

ing issues so far this season, just minor things, but we’re still going reasonable, we’re leading the points in the series at the moment, but we’ve only had two rounds.”

Honeywell is the defending War of the Wings champion, and has also finished in the top three of the Salute to Goodie and the Sprint Car Gold Cup in previous years, but what makes those placings all the more special is that he only took up the sport seven years ago.

The former Methven rugby player said he felt the time was right to swap the paddock for the racetrack as a 32-year-old, after being passionate about motorsport all his life.

“I always had a bit of a craving for motorsport. I thought if I don’t do it now, I probably won’t do it,” he said.

“It’s everything about motor racing, the adrenaline you get and the challenge of setting up a race car for different tracks and getting

the results, if all the ducks line up and you do well, it’s a big old buzz.”

With a packed schedule ahead, Honeywell will hope his car behaves itself, but insisted there’s still plenty of preparation to be done.

“We want to get in the top three in those bigger ones, in the top handful,” he said.

“So now we’ve just got to get our car set up right and drive it spot on.”

Coaches alter tactics for law changes Provincial rugby coaches are already reworking selection ideas and plans for next year’s series after alterations to the breakdown laws and the value of tries and penalties.

Harbour coach Steve Jackson expects there will be more emphasis on attack after it was announced yesterday that tries will be worth six points and penalties reduced to match the value of conversions.

He expects teams will try to hold onto

possession for even longer periods and information from trials in South Africa and Australia pointed to high scores and teams going for all out attack inside the 40m zone instead of kicking for goal.

Changes around breakdown laws 15 and 16 would eliminate the tackle and possession-pinching work from such experts as Richie McCaw and David Pocock.

The law changes would encourage attack and get players in better positions at the breakdown rather than absorbing heavy blows

around their neck and head.

“I suppose the guys who were good jacklers and stealers around the ruck will have to change their games as well,” Jackson said.

If World Rugby ratify the law variations, tacklers will have to roll away and their teammates will have to take up space and drive over the ball.

Jackson thought mauls might become more prevalent with an even greater emphasis on strong scrums.

One of the difficulties would

be getting Super rugby players to alter the way they have played throughout that series before making the transition to the provincial series.

There were also plans to use twin referees but until sides got used to that at training, Jackson was unsure about that effect.

“I hope they won’t slow the game down and will make more decisions rather than having to go to the TMO. “I understand one will try and look at the breakdown and the

defensive line and there has been talk about a metre back from the breakdowns so there are going to be a lot of learnings for a lot of players.

“I’m not too sure if the game needs two refs but we don’t know until we try. Who has more influence, the attacking ref or defensive one?”

Jackson was sure he would need to use different types of loose-forwards who were ball carriers, link players and tacklers.
