Lake Hood’s trial boat registration programme is set to become compulsory in the New Year. The initiative was put in place by Lake Hood Aquatic Park management in partnership with Environment Canterbury in December 2013 to monitor boaties’ behaviour. It was the first trial of its kind in the
South Island and about 1400 boaties have registered, however, it had no teeth and unregistered boats could still legally use the lake, Lake Hood manager Gilbert Murdoch said. That is about to change. With the new regulations soon to come into play, unregistered craft will not be able to launch and lake officials will have the authority to suspend or ban vessels not displaying the correct information.
It will become mandatory for lake users with vessels over 10-horsepower to register before launching. A sticker will then be issued with the owner’s trailer registration number printed on it, to be displayed on either the side of the boat.
