More teachers needed BY DAISY HUDSON
DAISY.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
A shortage of relief teachers could cause major headaches for Mid Canterbury schools in the new year. According to a local principal, the pool of relief teachers is getting smaller, which could lead to delays in activities such as professional development. However, another local educator believes there is no issue. Mount Hutt College principal John Schreurs told the Guard-
ian yesterday the school was currently advertising for more relief teachers, after hiring two relievers for permanent positions. Mr Schreurs said the school had also lost another long-term reliever, who was leaving the district. “At this stage, it looks like a smaller pool,” he said. “If we can’t get relievers to cover some of the things we’re doing, then we’ll either not be able to do it, or look at internal
cover, or a mixture of both.” One area that could be affected was professional development. “Obviously if someone’s sick you need to cover that, but if it’s hard to get, there might be professional development or some courses where we might have to say look, we’re going to have to do that later in the year, we can’t do that now,” he said. “We’d rather not do that, so we’d look at ways we can cover what we need to.” Mr Schreurs said the school
also used part-time teachers for cover, but as of next year the school had fewer part-time teachers on staff. Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan agreed the pool of relief teachers has been getting “progressively smaller”. He believed the decline could be down to the changing demographics of the profession, as there were possibly fewer teachers who traditionally made up the relieving pool, such as those
who were either recently retired or had young families. However, Tinwald School principal Peter Livingstone said his school was not suffering from a lack of relief teachers. Mr Livingstone also said he was reducing the amount of teaching cover required by holding professional development sessions during school holidays, rather than taking teacher only days. “It just makes it easier all round,” he said.
