Speed networking coming to town

Lack of info concerns firearms owners

That the district’s gun owners do not want to break the law, but are frustrated and concerned about a lack of information following changes to firearms laws this year, was the biggest take-away from a meeting of more than 100 firearms owners in Ashburton on Thursday night.

The first tranche of law changes were moved through Parliament earlier this year, and with a second set of changes proposed, owners are concerned that things are being rushed, said the Council of Licensed Firearms Owners secretary Nicole McKee, who hosted the meeting.

Held at the Ashburton RSA, the meeting ran for around five hours, with attendees voicing

plenty of concerns.

“I ended up speaking for about two hours and then there were three hours of questions.

Bob (McDonald), who organised the meeting, had to end it, not because the questions were getting out of hand, it had just gone on for so long,” she said.

“There are a lot of people that don’t understand what is going on.”

McKee said due to the speed with which the legislation has been put through Parliament, and a lack of information available from police, there is a lot of confusion for owners.

Many firearms owners were confused about what modifications were available to them, if their firearms were now considered prohibited, or if they were

even prohibited, due to the confusing pricing lists available online.

McKee said there was also a glaring lack of understanding around the amnesty put in place following the law changes, with many thinking they had until the end of December to register their firearms.

In fact they have until the end of September to register, and until the end of December to hand them over to police.

There were also concerns around the second tranche of law changes that were proposed

by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern earlier this year, which included creating a firearms register and stricter licensing criteria and testing.

“The big thing I would say is to

take part in the select committee process,” she said.

“Go and talk to your local MP, tell them about what concerns you have, tell them how it has affected you.

“Say these are my concerns, these are what I think is good, so they can understand the impact.”

McKee said the best course of action would be for the timeframe of the amnesty to be extended, and for there to be more education and information available for owners.

“These are people that are willing to comply, they know it is the law, they just don’t know what is illegal and what isn’t,” she said.

“These are law abiding owners, the info just isn’t there for them.”

People might be familiar with the concept of speed dating, trying to prove yourself to a potential partner in a short timeframe, but S.E.E.D.S are hoping to adapt the concept to networking.

The organisation, which is part of Safer Ashburton, is hosting a speed networking session next month to allow community workers to meet and discuss their work.

“We are inviting people who work across a wide range of services within our district, so this is a fantastic opportunity for them to find out about your organisation and individual workers and their particular service area,” S.E.E.D.S co-ordinator Marie McAnulty said.

“This is an opportunity to make a large number of individuals aware of your particular programme or services that are available in our district.

“Ultimately, we know this will result in improved services and supports within our district for the very people we exist to support, helping make our community an even better place to live for individuals and families.”

The format of the event is that participants will spend 40 seconds introducing themselves, their service and what it offers and how to access it, before hearing about the other person in return and then moving on to the next person.

The event is limited to the first 60 people, and is open to all community workers in the community, and anyone wishing to take part can contact Marie on 308 1395 ext 225 to book their spot.

Hinds School opens two new classrooms

Two Hinds School alumni inspired pupils this week when they attended an official opening for two new classrooms.

Olympic cyclist Lauren Ellis and mountain climber Michael Read talked about their days attending the small country school.

Read, who has conquered Mt Everest, told students, parents, board of trustee and community members gathered at the school on Friday that he was a student there from 1990 to 1997.

“There was just one computer for the whole school, and it sat in the back of the classroom,” Read said.

“Students did not use it because they did not really know how, but they ended up working out how to play Solitaire on it.

“Learning technology has come a fair way since that time, it’s very cool to see,” Read said.

Ellis – who is a Commonwealth Games medallist, former Olympic cyclist and finance degree graduate – talked about giving one’s absolute best and making the most of one’s education.

While she had not returned with a medal from the Olympics,

she knew she had given it absolutely everything she could, and was proud of this.

A tree was planted outside the new classrooms, by Ellis, with the help of pupils Jessica Sim, James Sheppard, Igor Barboza and JM Taroy.

Long serving teacher Elaine King cut the ribbon with pupils Morgan Harbutt and Mia Hyde.

Ministry of Education delivery manager Corey Krysman said the two new classrooms were part of a stock of more than 70 emergency accommodation buildings constructed by the University of Canterbury following the earthquakes that the ministry had purchased.

Two had been joined together to make up the new classroom block, which offered a modern learning environment, with ducted air conditioning and heating, insulation, and autex wall coverings.

Principal Vicki McIntyre said the roll was growing and she welcomed having the two new learning spaces for the school’s more than 140 pupils.

“It gives us capacity to grow further rather than be short of room,” she said.

Hinds School alumni Michael Read and Lauren Ellis were impressed with the school’s two new classrooms when they attended for the classrooms’ official opening on Friday.

Mayor laments canned nomination

Tossing out a local body candidate’s nomination because of a simple human error was not what good democracy should look like, Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel said.

Since Ashburton urban ward councillor Russell Ellis’ nomination for this year’s local body election was declared invalid because an error was not picked up by council staff when the nomination was lodged, Favel said she had made dozens of phone calls in an attempt to have that decision overturned.

“It’s absolutely heart wrenching for him but it appears to be a grey area where there doesn’t seem to be an adjudicator; it seems the electoral officers are filling that role,” Favel said.

Ellis might be looking at a local body political career in tatters but he has not given up the fight to have his nomination reinstated.

He lodged his nomination more than 24 hours ahead of deadline to ensure there was time for it to be checked and any changes made. In spite of it having been checked off by council staff and marked as correct, hours after nominations closed

it was discovered the checking process was flawed and an error was found – one of his nominators did not live within the urban ward boundary.

As soon as he was alerted, Ellis found another nominator and was told by council staff that would solve the problem. However, electoral officer Andrew Morton stepped in and said the change could not be made post deadline. No discussion, no higher court of appeal. Ellis was out.

The official candidate list was published yesterday, without Ellis’ name, but he said he had still not given up hope of making it

onto ballot papers.

“What’s particularly galling is that I’ve always campaigned for common sense and this is not. I have become a victim of a lack of commonsense,” Ellis said.

It’s all about good faith – an application lodged in good faith, an application checked off as correct in good faith, felled by human error in a very manual system that involved cross-checking of maps and electoral rolls, he said.

“Everyone says what has happened is wrong but no one knows how we can get stuck in and do something about it.”

were minor changes in boundaries for the district’s three wards but it was proving impossible to obtain detailed copies of those boundaries, he said.

If his nomination cannot be reinstated, Ellis said he will make it his mission to fight for a change in legislation to allow a grace period in which errors can be found and for an appeal system to be established.

While re-election was never guaranteed, Ellis said he had made some life changing decisions to stand for a third term.

“Now my life plans may have to change.”

A stitch or two on display orry for Mid Canty

Stitching threads of all colours into works of art is a passion for Ashburton Embroiderers’ Guild members.

Their biennial exhibition opens at the Ashburton Art Gallery today.

Gathering of Threads will feature work from the majority of the guild’s more than 30 members.

President Sue Quinn is among them and she hopes the exhibition will help raise the profile of a craft that is often forgotten by the young.

“There is not many people taking it up, a lot of the young ones they are just too busy,” Quinn said.

But it was an art that was worth taking up. While it was time consuming and required concentration, the end result could give joy and pleasure for generations to come.

Guild members generally did not sell their work, she said.

“It’s more handed down through the family because there’s a lot of work that goes into these pieces,” she said.

In the exhibition there are a wide range of items from cushion covers and framed pictures,

In brief Crash victim named Police have named the man killed in a car accident on Thursday morning near Mayfield. He was 50-year-old local man Valentine Theodore Matiu Samuel. Police are enquiries into the circumstances of the crash which emergency services were notified of at around 7.15am. The crash involved a car, with only Samuel in it, and a power pole.

Ashburton Embroiderers’ Guild president Sue Quinn is looking forward to the opening of the guild’s biennial exhibition at the Ashburton Art Gallery today.

She said getting into the art of embroidery was not too difficult, as it began with the very simple cross stitch.

“And then you progress into other stitches, people in our guild are very friendly at teaching other people.

“There’s always somebody

willing to lend a hand and teach you whatever you need to know.”

Quinn began embroidery in 1994 and the Ashburton grandmother will generally spend up to 15 hours per week on it.

“I enjoy sitting down in the sun in the afternoon and stitching,” she said.

A baby boy has died after an alleged assault in Northland on Thursday night. Police were called to a Whangarei address by ambulance staff at 8.30pm.

A 5-month-old boy had suffered severe injuries. He died at the scene. Police arrested a 28-yearold man at the address and he has been charged with assault on a child.

The wild child of the council table bows out W

hen Peter Reveley hands in his councillor name tag on October 12, the Ashburton District Council will farewell a man who has never been afraid to speak out and stand up for what he believes to be right.

The wild child around the council table, Peter would often be the lone voice or a lone vote on an issue, refusing to be cowed by majority opinion, fearlessly standing alone if needed.

But after five terms he reckons he’s done his bit. His farm and his huge commitment to the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust are consuming his time.

Opting not to seek re-election was a tough decision, but as ever, if he wanted to remain true to his own beliefs, retirement was his only option.

“I stood for council because when I looked at the councillors who were there they were too old and too rich to understand the average person in the district.

Now that’s me. I’m not rich, but I’ve gotten to the point where I’m too old,” he said.

There was a fair bit of emotion

Come election day, Peter Reveley won’t be rushing to check the results. For the first time in many years his name won’t be in the hat as a candidate for the Ashburton District Council. He talks to reporter Sue Newman about life around the council table and his life after council. around the decision, but his rural support trust commitment in the wake of the M. bovis outbreak, has become all-consuming, he said.

“It’s almost a fulltime job on top of the council job and the farm.”

And doing triple duty most days sees Peter up at 5am, and out on the farm, wrapping up a few hours’ work, before showering and heading into town – a 30-minute drive – for a morning council meeting. Often he’d repeat that cycle at night.

“You get pretty fed up with shifting break fences at night with a headlight on,” he said.

When you’ve been on council for 15 years and you’ve worked

with three mayors, there’s not much you haven’t seen. And Peter admits he’s upset all three at times, often been a thorn in their sides and he hopes, on occasion, provided them with some wise advice.

He and former mayor Bede O’Malley came to council at the same election and their’s was to be a relationship that would never be easy. They fell out over the need for a stopbank below Mt Somers. Both dug stakes in the ground and Peter said he refused to back off. With the benefit of local knowledge he knew he was right.

“I was out of favour for the rest of that term. I was pretty

aggressive about that stopbank and I went through many council meetings without being allowed to speak,” he said.

Two terms down, Angus McKay was the new mayor and while he and Peter may have shared a rural background, they didn’t always see eye-to-eye.

The district’s art gallery and museum project was one of those issues.

“Angus and I got pretty serious over that and the legacy that’s now left us with is diabolically poor. I wasn’t opposed to the project, but we asked for $3.5 million to do up the old county building and then we moved on to the new one,” he said.

That was in 2010 and while it had no bearing on his decision, Peter decided to resign from council mid-term. His farm needed him and he was drowning under the dual commitment of council and farm work.

“When you looked at the numbers, you could see it wouldn’t work. The air-conditioning, for example, was doomed to fail from the outset.”

The legacy of that cut corner build will hang around for a long time, but at least the council had fronted up, owned the problem and was working to right the deficiencies, he said.

With the EA Networks Centre, the council absolutely got it right, Peter said.

“It’s been a big winner, but I am pretty disappointed we didn’t go a bit further and put the sports hub in there as it would have created a great headquarters for all sports.

That still needs to be done.”

He’s not a fan of the council’s North East Business Park and he reckons there’s still some miles to run with the second Ashburton River Bridge project. continued next page

News www.guardianonline.co.nz “I like things to be affordable and right and I’ve often voted against lots of things, many times even if I was on my own. I’m pretty fearless if I think I’m right and I won’t back down.”

There have been disappointments, mostly around water issues – stopbanks, stockwater.

And perhaps the council – or more likely ECan – won’t have heard the last of him on things water related, he said.

“I’ve already signalled they’ve got a few things wrong.”

Councillors were elected to do the right thing by the district and it was important around the council table that they did not simply agree, that they voiced opinions and were prepared to stand up on an issue if they thought something was not right, Peter said.

“If you spot something you believe is not right, you can’t just walk away, you need to get it resolved and get it right.”

It was a job where you learned as you went, but where it was important to read and understand all issues if you wanted to do the job properly, Peter said.

For him, one of the hardest things was learning the protocols and behaviours that were expected around the council table.

“In the early days I got told off a lot of time for swearing, but I also had senior councillors I learned a lot from.”

And learning was something every councillor had to be prepared to do, he said.

There’s still a little doubt in Peter’s mind that he’s doing the right thing in stepping down. He knows the time is right, but like any long-serving councillor, there are always projects you’d love to see through to the end.

His include seeing the entire district served with piped water

and he’d love to be there for the completion of the new library and civic centre. But there’s no ideal time, there will always be projects.

You just have to do what your gut tells you is right, he said.

Decision made, he’s looking ahead. There is a huge amount of work to do on the welfare side of

the rural support trust. His phone goes day and night with people needing support, needing advice.

It’s an organisation dear to Peter’s heart.

He became involved as a client when the team turned up to help clear his farm of dead stock after the 1991 snowfall. Since 2004 he’s

been part of the team, helping other farmers in need.

Yes, there are things he will miss, people he hopes he’ll still stay in contact with, but he says he’s leaving the council when it has some great staff on board.

But come Monday, October 14, councillor Peter Reveley will just be Peter Reveley, farmer, husband of Rhonda, father of four and grand-dad of nine. He’ll be continuing the family’s farming legacy, devoting more time to the rural support trust and enjoying working with his new passion, building up a flock of milking sheep.

Come election day he’ll still be interested in the results, his heart is still very much in local body politics. All you can hope for, he said, is that voters think about what they’re doing and elect a strong team to take the district forward.

“The foundations are laid for the next three years so I think it’ll tick along nicely.”

$200,000 track in the making

Bush bashing, rock hopping and stream wading were all part of getting to Sharplin Falls this week for Guardian reporter Susan Sandys. But if all goes according to plan, it won’t be such a difficult task in future.

Mt Somers Walkway Society members are seeking approval from the Department of Conservation for a new $200,000-plus track, with two bridges.

E

ver since the Canterbury Earthquakes closed down the Sharplin Falls Track about four years ago, Mid Cantabrians have been grieving.

The one-kilometre trek into the iconic falls on Bowyers Stream was a pilgrimage every family in the district just had to do.

The walk has sadly become a distant memory, but Mid Cantabrians have not given up hope that one day they will be able to access the area once again.

Mt Somers Walkway Society new president Charles Ross has been carrying those dreams on his shoulders for some time.

He recalls that when the Department of Conservation (DOC) closed the falls due to earthquake-triggered rockfalls, Mid Cantabrians never really accepted they may not be able to return.

“I think we just had such a lot of enquiry from people around the area, and Ashburton, asking when are the Sharplin Falls going to be opening again,” Ross said.

He and fellow members are determined not to give up until they have a track that is safe, family friendly and DOC approved. Members have this month submitted concept plans for a $200,000-plus project to DOC, after working in conjunction with Drummond and Etheridge track and trail expert Cam Bisset, and being assisted by

EDC’s Sam Polson on bridge concept designs.

On Thursday, Ross led in this reporter, along with his fellow

walkway society members Lew Shaw, Robert Schikker and Bryan Humm, to reveal the proposed new route.

stream crossings, and Schikker had a set of garden clippers which could be needed to get through thick bush.

So off we went. We began on the old track – over the Bowyers Stream bridge at the carpark, along a path above the stream, climbing upwards. At the top, the old track continues, but there is no point taking this as the former gantry has been dismantled, and there is the danger of rock fall.

Instead we climbed down to the riverbed and walked upstream.

Here Ross pointed out where a bridge would be built as part of the proposed new one-kilometre route.

It would begin, he explained, on the same side of the stream as the carpark. It would wind its way through the mountain beech forest and ferny scrub, and then cross to the other side of the stream via the bridge. The bridge would be one of two new bridges, so there would ultimately be three bridges over Bowyers Stream below the falls – the two new ones as well as the current bridge at the carpark. The bridge continues to access tracks remaining in high usage today,

up to Duke’s Knob and through to Pinnacles Hut. We walked upstream further, using that rope to be able to pull ourselves up a particularly cumbersome boulder, and had to carefully wade to the other side through knee-deep flowing water. This was the area that the second bridge would be built, Ross explained.

Here people would cross from the side of the river that the old track is on, back to the other side they had started on. This bridge would cross the stream diagonally, exiting out to a walkway feature of a cave-like structure.

The walkway would then lead further alongside the stream, to its end, which would be a lookout point.

We walked on to this point, a naturally raised area above the stream, and from here the falls can be seen in all their glory.

There is a series of four falls, the second one has its bottom two to three metres obscured, and this was the one that could be seen in

its entirety close-up at the end of the former track.

The new proposed lookout is not as close to the falls as the end point of the former track, but it is nevertheless sure to be a winner with Mid Cantabrians.

Ross and his walkway colleagues said the walk would be about getting to the lookout, as well as the journey itself, featuring natural swimming areas, picnic spots, geological features, and the area’s native flora and fauna.

They believed the Sharplin Falls walk, measuring about two kilometres return, is the perfect walk to get children out into the forest.

“If you have an appreciation for nature you have something special,” Humm said.

“This track does whet the appetite of young ones to go into the huts,” Ross said.

He was talking about the Woolshed Creek and Pinnacles Hut, landmarks of the Staveley and Mt Somers areas, accommodating thousands of trampers each year.

On the homeward journey, Ross and colleagues decided that because I was doing so well keeping up with them, instead of going back on to the old track at the start, we would exit via the unformed newly-proposed track.

This was bush bashing in the true sense of the word. Following blue markers left by Bissett, we clambered through ferny undergrowth, climbed over huge logs, and clung on to trees to keep our balance while negotiating steep, boggy and slippery areas.

My wet and partly frozen feet began to warm up, but I was attacked by a hidden log which dealt to my shin, leaving a small bruise. My water bottle fell out of my inside jacket pocket somewhere along the way, never to be found again.

It was fun to be in the Sharplin Falls area again though. I can definitely count myself among the Mid Cantabrians who are eagerly anticipating the opening of a new track and can not wait to be able to walk to the falls again.

Amazon fire concerns

Amid global concern about raging fires in the Amazon, Brazil’s government complained that it is being targeted in a smear campaign by critics who contend President Jair Bolsonaro is not doing enough to curb widespread deforestation.

The threat to what some call “the lungs of the planet” has ignited a bitter dispute about who is to blame during the tenure of a leader who has described Brazil’s rainforest protections as an obstacle to economic development.

French President Emmanuel Macron called the wildfires an international crisis and said the leaders of the Group of 7 nations should hold urgent discussions about them at their summit in France this weekend.

“Our house is burning. Literally. The Amazon rain forest – the lungs which produces 20 per cent of our planet’s oxygen – is on fire,” Macron tweeted.

Bolsonaro fired back with his own tweet: “I regret that Macron seeks to make personal political gains in an internal matter for Brazil and other Amazonian countries. The sensationalist tone he used does nothing to solve the problem.”

Onyx Lorenzoni, the president’s chief of staff, earlier in the day accused European countries of exaggerating environmental problems in Brazil in order to disrupt its commercial interests.

His allegation came after Germany and Norway, citing Brazil’s apparent lack of commitment to fighting deforestation, decided to withhold more than $60 million in funds earmarked for sustainability projects in Brazilian forests.

a “very strong” indication that some non-governmental groups could be setting blazes in retaliation for losing state funds under his administration. He did not provide any evidence.

Bolsonaro, who won election last year, also accused media organisations of exploiting the fires to undermine his government.

London-based Amnesty International blamed the Brazilian government for the fires, which have escalated international concern over the vast rainforest that is a major absorber of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

The rights group this year documented illegal land invasions and arson attacks near indigenous territories in the Amazon, including Rondonia state, where many fires are raging, said Kumi Naidoo, Amnesty’s secretary general.

Possibility of malaria eradication AP The World Health Organisation says it’s theoretically possible to wipe out malaria, but probably not with the flawed vaccine and other control methods being used at the moment.

Dr. Pedro Alonso, the UN health agency’s global malaria director, said WHO is “unequivocally in favour” of eradication, but that major questions about its feasibility remain.

Alonso was presenting the results of a WHO-commissioned report evaluating if eradicating malaria should be pursued. He said the experts concluded lingering uncertainties meant they were unable to formulate a clear strategy and thus, couldn’t propose a definitive timeline or cost estimate for eradication.

WHO has long grappled with the idea of erasing ma-

laria from the planet. An eradication campaign was first attempted in 1955 before being abandoned more than a dozen years later.

Smallpox is the only human disease to ever have been eradicated. In 1988, WHO and partners began a global campaign that aimed to wipe out polio by 2000. Despite numerous effective vaccines and billions of invested dollars, efforts have stalled in recent years and officials have repeatedly missed eradication targets.

Although several African countries began immunising children against malaria in national programs this year, the shot only protects about one third of children who get it. The parasitic disease kills about 435,000 people every year, mostly children in Africa.

“An effective vaccine is something we desperately need if we’re ever going to get malaria under control and

we just don’t have it,” said Alister Lister, dean of biological sciences at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.

Lister also raised concerns about whether malaria programmes would be able to raise the billions needed given other competing eradication campaigns, like those for polio, guinea worm and lymphatic filariasis.

Other experts agreed that eradicating malaria in the coming years seems aspirational.

“It’s a long game and there will be many bumps on the road,” said Sian Clarke, co-director of the malaria centre at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Still, Clarke said that eradication might only be achieved if there is a sense of urgency, given how malaria spreads; the parasitic disease is transmitted to people by mosquitoes.

The WWF conservation group also challenged Bolsonaro’s allegations about NGOs, saying they divert “the focus of attention from what really matters: the well-being of nature and the people of the Amazon”.

Brazil contains about 60 per cent of the Amazon rainforest, whose degradation could have severe consequences for global climate and rainfall.

Filipe Martins, an adviser to Bolsonaro, said that the Brazilian government is committed to fighting illegal deforestation and that many other countries are causing environmental damage.

Sergio Bergman, Argentina’s environment minister, appealed for people to overcome political or ideological divisions to protect the environment.

“We all, in a way, understand that it is not possible to keep using natural resources without limits,” Bergman said.

NZME Six senior citizens have been arrested in Connecticut US, after they were allegedly caught having sex in a woodland.

Police caught the amorous seniors last week during a crackdown on public hookups in the area.

The six people were arrested and charged with breach of peace.

Two were also charged with public indecency.

Authorities were in the area responding to reports of “lewd and sexual activity”.

The area, Grace Richardson Conservation, is reportedly a popular spot for public sex.

The six seniors have been released and will appear in court at a later date.

New owner for Peppa Pig The maker of Monopoly and GI Joe will pay about $4 billion to buy Entertainment One Ltd, a British entertainment company that produces Peppa Pig, PJ Masks and other animated shows for preschoolers. Peppa Pig, which stars a pink cartoon pig with a British accent, airs worldwide and is translated into over 40 languages. Hasbro Inc, based in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, said the deal will help it turn more of its toy brands into shows or movies. Many of its brands, including My Little Pony and Transformers, already appear in TV shows and movies. The deal is expected to close before the end of the year.

Libra backers spooked by backlash

Democratic representative Rashida Tlaib asked whether Facebook was forming a “crypto mafia” with other companies to boost each other’s businesses, citing the “close relationships” between executives at some of the partners and Facebook’s directors.

During the hearings, Marcus said that the members had “joined because they can add value on the network and provide services that are relevant to the people we serve”.

Kiwibank’s annual net profit fell $7 million, reflecting both lower fee income and one-off gains in the previous year.

Net profit fell to $108 million for the year ended June despite net interest income rising 8.3 per cent to $445 million.

Gross fee and other income fell to $185 million in the year from $211 million.

“We had a record year for lending and deposit growth, margins generally remained firm, but profits were down slightly. A contributing factor was a reduction in fee income which is great for our customers,”

says chief executive Steve Jurkovich in the results announcement.

Kiwibank’s customer lending and deposits both grew by $2.1 billion for the year, up 12 per cent and 13 per cent respectively at $20.4 billion and $18.24 billion. Net interest margin fell to 2.11 per cent from 2.20 per cent.

Jurkovich says the rise in net interest income reflects more customers joining Kiwibank while the bank cut banking fees by $12 million and revenue from bill paying for New Zealand Post fell by $7 million.

Income from insurance payments also fell $12 million.

bank and its other two shareholders are the New Zealand Superannuation Fund with 25 per cent and ACC with 22 per cent.

“Kiwibank is adjusting its business strategy to meet the changing preferences of customers. We are investing in our own branches where customers wish to interact with us face-to-face as well as developing our technology capabilities,” Jurkovich says.

“Kiwibank and NZ Post businesses are responding to different customer demands. Although sometimes challenging, this move to increased independence for Kiwibank brings opportunity,” he says.

Investment to continue for Delegats

Delegat Group, New Zealand’s biggest listed winemaker, lifted operating net profit by 14 per cent in the June 2019 year, but indicated it was unlikely to make further gains next year.

The winemaker, whose stable includes the Oyster Bay brand, posted a record operating net profit of $51.4 million for the 12 months to June 30. The earnings measure strips out movements in the fair value of its grape inventory and derivatives.

Delegat posted operating earnings before interest, tax depreciation and amortisation at $99.3 million from $89.6 million, an 11 per cent boost.

The company sold more than 3 million cases globally, up 10 per cent on a year earlier. Revenue rose 9 per cent to $278 million.

In a presentation filed to the NZX, group chairman Jim Delegat said the record results were a testament to the strength of its business model.

“Delegat is investing to support its strategic goal building a leading global Super Premium wine company,” he added.

Delegat saw a 30 per cent gain in case sales in its second-biggest market, the UK, Ireland and Europe.

Sales in its largest market of North America were up 7 per cent while Pacific sales dropped by 2 per cent to 780,000 cases.

During the period, $32.9 million was invested in growth assets, while another $43.3 million is earmarked for 2020.

“This capital investment supports the group’s plan to grow sales to 3,651,000 cases by 2022 and will provide for further growth beyond

that period,” Delegat said.

The company is forecasting an 8 per cent rise to 3.24 million cases next year. It said based on prevailing exchange rates its operating profit would be in line with this year’s performance.

Net profit, which including the fair value adjustments, increased to $47.4 million from $46.8 million. Delegat reported a $4 million fair value write-down in the latest period, compared to a $1.9 million write-up.

Drivers of growth will be Oyster Bay sales in North America, and Barossa Valley Estate wines around the world, managing director John Freeman said.

The board declared a 17 cent final dividend, payable October 19 with a September 27 record date.

The shares last traded at $11.72 and have gained 19 per cent so far this year.

The 28 members of the Libra Association, which include Visa, Mastercard, Uber, Spotify and the Facebook subsidiary Calibra, made a non-binding pledge to invest at least $US10 million ($15.6m) in the project, which Facebook unveiled in June, with the aim of shaking up the global payments market.

ews this week of the demise of Saturday afternoon cricket at a senior level here in Mid Canterbury is a massive blow for the already struggling senior scene.

The writing has been on the wall for quite some time now.

The continual demise of clubs and teams has meant that it was only ever a matter of time until the pin was pulled and something different was done, but it won’t make the battle any easier for the purists out there in the community.

Much like rugby and netball and so many other rapidly growing sports within our community there is a following when it comes to cricket.

But chances of that happening in the near future are slim given this week’s news.

Of course, not all hope is lost.

We will still have two senior teams on offer on Saturdays, but

every second week they’ll likely be playing on the other side of the Rakaia River, taking part in a Canterbury Country competition with sides from Ellesmere and potentially North Canterbury.

The big question now is, how did we get to this point?

What has made cricket so unappealing to potential players that we are now faced with a player drought and some of our proud clubs having to literally pull stumps?

Time, perhaps.

Cricket is a big commitment considering it can eat up all of a Saturday afternoon and then one or two nights a week with training.

You certainly can’t blame it on popularity as the efforts of our

New Zealand cricket side over recent years has been better than ever and it’s been said that the success of a national team is a good way to encourage numbers to get involved in a sport.

Mid Canterbury has a proud cricketing history, especially when it comes to club level and some of our clubs, whether currently still in existence or long gone from the game, have quite remarkable stories to tell History buffs and longstanding cricketing fans will speak of days where the senior competition was strong, but it was equally as well backed up by an impressive line up of second grade sides which, at one point in time, is believed to have numbers in the high teens.

That was back in the days when

names like Eddington, Sampson, Isherwood and many others dominated the local scene, the game was strong and clubs were prospering.

How good it would be to return to those glory days again.

A Wednesday night shortened version of the game will provide that outlet for those who still wish to come in off the long run up, or swing the willow about for a couple of hours.

But it’s never quite going to be the same. We’ve lost a piece of the Mid Canterbury sporting landscape and our only hope can be that it’s just a temporary rain delay and we’re back on the pitches on Saturday afternoons, playing senior cricket in our own competitions, once again very soon.

Today’s highlight in history: On August 24, 1814, during the War of 1812, British forces invaded Washington, DC, setting fire to the Capitol (which was still under construction) and the White House, as well as other public buildings.

On this date: In AD 79, long-dormant Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in volcanic ash; an estimated 20,000 people died.

In 1857, the New York branch of the Ohio Life Insurance and Trust Company failed, sparking the Panic of 1857.

The right to vote T

he recent Guardian editorial asking should prisoners have the right to vote was absolutely pointless for anyone but the prisoners themselves.

There is no debate needed, there is no righteous anger non-prisoners should feel, no “they did the crime so they deserve every right stripped off them” argument.

The only purpose a debate would serve is to inflate the superiority egos non-prisoners have when it comes to playing the “I am right because I’m not a law breaker” card.

Just because you are not inside does not make you a good person and therefore worthy of all the freedoms a democratic society affords.

There are far bigger ‘crimes’ committed in this country that deserve debate long before turning the blowtorch on those who are already beaten by society.

The entire prison population, including women, is now 9969 as of June 30, 2019, according to Department of Corrections statistics.

There are currently 295,000 children living in families under the 60 per cent income

poverty line according to the Child Poverty Action Group (independent NZ charity).

Now even if their statistics are out by a few thousand, that is still at least 25 more times the number of children living in at risk conditions compared to prisoners.

Tell me which is the bigger crime?

Ten thousand prisoners or almost 300,000 children at risk?

Tell me where the debate about rights in society should be?

Tell me that we have the right to kick a beaten dog harder, when we allow the continuation of conditions that chain our future generations to suffering.

giving voting rights to prisoners, were the prisoners themselves, and I bet none of them would have read it.

The debate should not be about voting rights for prisoners, it should address the purpose of prisons.

Is a prison to punish or rehabilitate?

Is a prison the best way to respond to crime?

Just because we inherited an English law and justice system from those who came here, does not mean we need to continue with it.

Was not the entire point of those early immigrants to establish a better society from which they had come from?

So, how well did we do?

Schools have been changing continuously to prepare our children for being adults.

Has our justice system changed continuously to prepare our society to deal with those who disregard our rules?

Statistically, if every single prisoner voted, they would account for exactly 0.38 per cent of all votes cast in the last election.

That is probably similar to what the Act Party is likely to get in the next election.

Seriously, there would have to be a more than doubling of the prison population to even get them to be 1 per cent of all votes.

There were 692,155 enrolled voters who did not vote in the last election, and people want to keep prisoners from voting.

That’s like asking a greenie to not use oil on the chain of their bike, in order to preserve fossil fuels, while a Formula 1 race takes place.

Giving prisoners voting rights is a decision that says – while we do not agree with your behaviour that resulted in you being imprisoned, we recognise you still have rights in a democratic society.

So, to answer the editor’s question – do they deserve the right to vote?

Perhaps it could be answered with another question – do we deserve the right to play God with people’s rights?

Mid Canterbury cricket’s proud history in adult cricket is set to come to a grinding halt this season with no local senior Saturday cricket competition on the cards, the first time it is believed to have happened in the sport’s local history.

Declining numbers and flailing involvement over recent years has brought the situation about with last season’s competition seeing just the four teams taking to the wicket each weekend for the Studholme and Pritchard Shields.

And with the situation labelled both dire, and urgent – something

needed to happen. And it needed to happen fast so, after extensive work over the off-season, an opportunity was presented for the remaining local teams to take up the option to play on the other side of the Rakaia River in a Canterbury Country competition.

Two clubs have taken up that proposal and this season both Tech Sharks and Allenton will have a team in the competition.

Allenton’s inclusion will come as a surprise to many following their withdrawal from the local competition for the first time in the club’s history last season, but the team which will take to the field this season will be unlike any Allenton side seen before.

They, at this stage, will field an all-Indian side with a large squad of around 20 players declaring their availability, following the same direction of other regions which have also seen an influx of Indian players to the game.

The Sharks have been one of the powerhouse sides in the senior scene for a number of years and will field a strong 11 each week to enter the new phase of their existence.

Mid Canterbury’s other existing senior cricket sides, Methven, Lauriston and Coldstream are understood to have not been able to commit to fielding a team in the competition.

It is understood that the Can-

terbury Country cricket scene will be split into two divisions, south and north, with the possibility that the longest journey for Mid Canterbury sides will be to Tai Tapu – although there may be a crossover match between the two divisions.

Should that fall between a Mid Canterbury side and the Cheviot based team, the match would be likely to be played at a neutral location such as Rangiora.

Cricket manager for both Mid and South Canterbury Cricket, Mark Medlicott said it was unfortunate but they had worked hard to try and ensure that Mid Canterbury’s senior cricket scene wasn’t completely lost.

“We will be playing a T18 competition on Wednesday nights which will start at 6pm,” he said.

“At this stage we have six confirmed teams and we are just working through the process of sorting out the finer details of it all.

“The competition will start in November for the first round and then we’ll return to play again in the New Year under the same format.”

It is hoped that the Wednesday night cricket option might appeal to a number of new or former players and bring them back into the game, which in turn could help strengthen the senior game for the future.

Excitement building for College A

On paper, results and form, College A have to go into today’s Mid Canterbury Netball premier one final as the favourites.

But, coach Kaye Kennedy knows her young charges will have to produce their best effort of the season if they’re to get the job done and claim College’s first premier crown in since 2010.

Their opposition in today’s final is a Celtic A side that they know will fight to the bitter end, but College A plan on doing exactly the same.

“I think some people think we’ve got the advantage, but I don’t actually think we do. It comes down to what happens on the day,” Kennedy said.

“Although they haven’t beaten us this season, they have got a huge amount of experience on that court, and a huge amount of finals experience, and we are aware of that.

“We just have to use our skills and the maturity and composure, that we saw, particularly last week against United.”

In that game, a semi-final, United A led most of the way but College A never went away and managed to get their noses in front when it mattered.

As the season has progressed, College A have gone from strengthto-strength, to the point that they were the only unbeaten team in the season’s third and final championship round.

Kennedy put their success so far down to a few factors. She said they’re a cohesive crew, both on and off the court, and they have all important self-belief and patience.

“We wanted to win the 50/50 ball, but when it came to our possession, we didn’t want to be that team that threw the 50/50 pass,” Kennedy said.

College A’s shooting stats have

“I don’t think there would be a game in Ashburton where our shooters have shot less than 80 per cent, and that’s great for the defence, because when they turn the ball over they know that the shooters at the other end are actually going to get it through the hoop,” Kennedy said.

College A are a side that’s played a lot of netball this season, also playing in the Christchurch SuperNet competition on a Wednesday night every week, as they have for many years.

And they’ve benefited from all that time on court.

Although their SuperNet game this week didn’t go to plan – losing by one to Cashmere – they’ve already put that behind them.

They’ve trained well and their attention is well and truly all on today’s game.

“We have achieved our goal. Our goal was to get into the final and for us now it’s about enjoying the occasion,” Kennedy said.

“They have never played finals netball before in this sort of league, so it’s very exciting for them and there’s certainly some nerves but as long as we can keep them in

check, we should be alright.

“I just hope that it’s a spectacle for people to really get excited about, and just for it to be a great end to the season.”

While the Mid Canterbury Netball premier one final was the end of the local club season, College A’s season doesn’t finish here, with the South Island secondary schools’ tournament awaiting them in Nelson in a week’s time.

Celtic drawing on experience

When it comes to finals netball experience, Celtic A have it in bucket loads.

And their coach knows they’ll need to draw on every ounce of that experience if they’re to come out on top in their latest appearance in Mid Canterbury Netball’s premier one grade final this afternoon.

Because in front of them will be a team that, while light on finals experience, has proven tough for any team to beat this season – Celtic A included.

The two teams have met three times so far this season and after drawing in round one, College A have taken the wins in rounds two and three.

“The results of the past, while they play on your mind, you learn some things from every game so we are hoping that we will take all those learnings into (today’s game) and put them into play,” Celtic A coach Ange Leadley said.

“We have a plan and we want to stick to that plan, because we haven’t done that against College this year.”

Last year, Celtic A went through the entire season unbeaten and finished the perfect season off with a win over Methven A in the final.

So they began the season as the team to beat in many people’s eyes, and started off strong once again.

But, in round two, they hit a bit of a speed bump.

A bad run of injuries and sickness meant that Celtic A struggled, at times, to put the same team on the court week in, week out. But now,

Liv Hutchinson has been a key figure in the Celtic A defence this season. at the point of the season where it really counts, they’re ready for what lies ahead.

And they hope that what lies ahead will be a rare third title on the trot. Over the years a few teams – Celtic included – have managed to win two titles in a row, but hattricks have proven hard to come by.

To achieve that rare feat today, Leadley knows her players will need

to be on top of their game, because anything can happen on finals day.

“I have seen many, many good players not perform on that day, because it’s a different kettle of fish.

But I’ve also seen some players, and teams, really rise to the occasion,” Leadley said.

“The key will be playing together as a team because that’s when we do well. We really lift each other,

we are a real unit and that’s how we have structured our game,” Leadley said.

“We have got lots of individual talent that I know could get the better of anyone, but where we have absolute strength is when we play together as a unit.”

Leadley knows what she’s talking about. While she’s spent the past few seasons leading the Celtic As

from the sideline as coach, she’s also won her fair share of premier titles as captain. In fact, this year it’s 20 years since she first won a premier title, as a player, with Celtic.

To win it again, 20 years later, and to complete that rare hat-trick would be an awesome end to what has been a bit of a rollercoaster season for Celtic A.

MC eager to start with a win Your starting line up . . .

After a couple of muddy weeks, Mid Canterbury look set to start the 2019 Heartland Championship on a dry track today, much to the delight of the side’s backline.

Mid Canterbury will host Horowhenua-Kapiti at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds’ main oval and the side’s coaches Dale Palmer and Jason Rickard are looking forward to seeing what the team they’ve brought together is truly capable of.

Two weeks ago Mid Canterbury took on Canterbury B on that same ground and atrocious weather meant it was a mud-fest, and a week ago they played South Canterbury in Timaru, where although the rain stayed away, the ground was still sodden from rain in the lead-up.

“The guys are looking forward to a dry track, and it will give the likes of Nete (Caucau) and Josh (McAtamney) the opportunity to get the ball and not be slipping over,” Palmer said.

Caucau has been given the nod to start at second-five today and Palmer is looking forward to seeing whether he can produce on a dry wicket, while McAtamney will again start at centre, but unlike the past couple of weeks won’t have his brother Matt McAtamney behind him.

Matt McAtamney was originally named to start at fullback but has been moved to the bench in a late change, with a new – or old, depending on how you look at it – face set to take his place.

Richard Catherwood, who has played for both Methven and Mid Canterbury in the past but now plays his club rugby for Darfield, has joined the side and will start in the 15 jersey.

“He’s a good Mid Canterbury man in the sense that, although he plays in Darfield, he’s spent a lot of time in Methven and Mid Canterbury, and he just brings a lot of experience and great communication, and he will really complement what we have already got,” Palmer said.

“Richie is a great team man and he’s there to help us bring some of

the younger guys on, so we are very lucky to have him as part of the crew and he will add value both on and off the field.”

Catherwood is one of two potential loan players who has come into the fold this week. Corey McKay, a 19-year-old who plays premier rugby for Taieri in the Dunedin competition, is the other and he’s been named to start today at first-five.

Palmer said McKay was a player who had been brought to their attention. He said Mid Canterbury needed someone who could kick them around the park, and McKay looked to have that skill-set.

Rakaia’s Inoke Tonga – who started at first-five in last week’s loss to South Canterbury – has moved to the bench for today’s clash and Palmer said it’s great to have depth and options in that pivotal position.

In another change to the starting 15 from last weekend, Seta Koroitamana is back at openside flanker, after being rested for the South Canterbury game.

Koroitamana is a key player in the

squad going forward, as illustrated by his inclusion in a New Zealand Heartland XV side to play Samoa next weekend. It means he’ll miss next weekend’s game against East Coast, but Palmer said the opportunity to play Samoa is huge and the team wishes him well.

Next weekend is a story for another day though, with the Horowhenua-Kapiti challenge the main thing on Mid Canterbury minds today. Mid Canterbury beat them on the road to start what ended up being a disappointing 2018 campaign, and starting with a win again will be vital to the side’s success going forward.

A win in round one means starting at the top, while a loss meant you were chasing, and in a short competition you couldn’t afford to drop games early if you wanted to be there for the business end.

Just what Horowhenua-Kapiti has to offer this season, Palmer doesn’t really know. He’s just focused on what his side has to do, and said this week has been about

focusing on their running systems and game structure.

He said the biggest challenge they’ve faced has been picking their starting 15, but competition for spots is a good problem to have.

“One to 15 doesn’t win a game, it’s one to 22, and it’s even more than that for us because we’ve got a bigger squad, so it’s one to 28,” Palmer said. “Some people might not quite get that start one week, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t contributing the next.”

Mid Canterbury will this season be captained by Jon Dampney, one of three players returning to Mid Canterbury duty after two years away, alongside Tevita Ula who will start at six today, and Kody Nordqvist who will start off the bench.

But the man of the moment today will be hooker Jackson Donlan, who will run out onto the field for his 50th cap for Mid Canterbury.

The Heartland Championship round one match between Mid Canterbury and Horowhenua-Kapiti will kick off today at 2.30pm.

How ABs can get the real Rieko back

T

here’s no formula for players to follow when they are out of form. No best known method to quickly and easily remedy the underperforming.

Which is a great shame, because it would be nice if someone could just click their fingers and bring Rieko Ioane back to the boil.

The World Cup is precisely the stage for which a player such as Ioane was made. Ioane at his best on the hard grounds of Japan would give the All Blacks another dimension.

But right now no one can be sure Ioane is going to be at his best in Japan. No one knows if or when he will return to being the player he was in 2017 and while it’s almost certain that the All Blacks coaches know the outside backs they are going to take to the World Cup, which of them will start in the tournament-defining game against South Africa is a much harder question to answer.

Even a month ago, no one foresaw that Ioane’s starting place would be under threat. For the last 18 months he and Ben Smith have been the non-negotiable selections and yet now, with the tournament less than a month from kicking off, it’s not clear where Ioane sits in the pecking order and how the coaches plan to use him in Japan.

New boy Sevu Reece is in that rare place where everything he does comes off and when someone is running that hot, it’s often best just to keep picking them until the magic inevitably dries up.

But for most of Ioane’s test career, he too has been able to make almost anything happen and he can’t be the forgotten man. Not yet, not so easily and readily because while Reece has been quite brilliant, Ioane, for all that it is easy to forget given his lack of form in recent tests,

Ioane can pose more questions, he has the greater array of weapons to strip a defence and the All Blacks will pose more of a threat with Ioane than they will Reece.

It’s all Reece at the moment, so the question that Ioane must now answer, with so little time in which to do it, is whether he can snap out of his malaise.

At 22, he can hardly be deemed a spent force. He’s been robbed of nothing physically. His pace is still there. His agility is good.

His power and acceleration still obvious.

That he has struggled to impose himself in the last two tests is surely attributable to some kind of mental fragility that wasn’t previously in his make-up.

This isn’t a case of a once explosive wing suddenly finding that his natural gifts have expired. This is a young man who has temporarily lost his way and needs all the help he can get to find a way through it as what we know about

Ioane is that when he’s confident and hungry to be involved, he is the most destructive outside back in world rugby.

In 2017 he invoked a sense of foreboding in Australia when, with his first touch in the opening Bledisloe Cup fixture in Sydney, he stood up Israel Folau with barely a metre of space in which to work and scored in the corner.

That was enough for most Australians to fear that the All Blacks, having inflicted Jonah Lomu and Christian Cullen on them, had found a new way to torment the Wallabies.

Ioane was just 21 when he made Folau look so ponderous and in Australian minds, a decade of pain stretched in front of them, with the All Blacks wing central in this dystopic vision, twisting and turning them in all sorts of cruel and unforeseen ways.

Later that same year the rest of the world felt the power of Ioane as he single-handedly turned the tests at Murrayfield and in Cardiff

by finding ways to beat defenders and open holes.

He was the best finisher in the world in 2017 and probably was until the end of last year when his test performances strangely became a little erratic and less dynamic.

At Twickenham he was animated during the haka, making a point of eye-balling his opposite man, England wing Chris Ashton.

But while it was intended as a statement of intent, it clearly just over-aroused Ioane who was caught horribly out of position three minutes into the game, allowing Owen Farrell to float a pass over his head so Ashton could score in the corner.

A week later in Dublin and Ioane made a searing break but with the Irish line at the All Blacks’ mercy, he threw a wild pass to no one and the moment was gone and with it the test.

Looking back, those two games at the end of last year were probably the first indications that Ioane, for whatever reason, was no longer turning up to test matches with his head clear and his decision-making governed by instinct.

In his first full year of test rugby Ioane was uninhibited, fearless even. He had no reputation to live up to and no expectations placed upon him other than to get his hands on the ball and run.

In 2019 he’s played like a man who is second guessing himself for 80 minutes. He’s played as if he has doubts, as if he sees the 2017 version of himself as a different being entirely – paralysis by analysis is the jargon.

How he reconnects with his true rugby self is for him to work out, but he might be advised that he won’t find anything useful in that regard by looking at his phone.

Clearly there will be more involved in project ‘Ioane Revival’ than simply ditching social media

but it would certainly be a good start.

He’s in the midst of his first career set-back and Ioane, speaking before he returned to Auckland colours this weekend, admitted to being frustrated at what he has been reading about himself on social media.

“Sometimes social media takes its toll on the team, the boys,” he said. “Not so much on me but some of the boys get talking, and then you get messages from other boys, asking ‘what’s going on?’

“But I’m good. I’m happy being me. I’m happy with the way I’m playing and that’s just the way rugby goes sometimes. There’s no big dramatic feeling.”

He might say it’s not affecting him, but wallowing in the lunacy of the Twitter-sphere is not a good idea at any time, but especially not when he’s searching for mental clarity and confidence.

He’s too good a player, too great a talent to let the ugliness and spitefulness of ill-informed trolls get inside his head and lessen his impact.

Instagram will not lead him back to the promised land and the only thing he should let inside his head at the moment are the comments made by All Blacks coach Steve Hansen after Ioane had saved the day with two tries against Wales in 2017.

“He’s phenomenal,” Hansen said. “He’s got something a lot of other people don’t have, namely myself, and that’s pace. Every time he gets the ball you think ‘wow, what’s going to happen?’ He only needs half a yard because he is so quick and he’s strong with it.

“If we can keep his feet on the floor he could go anywhere that kid.”

If he holds on to that, who knows, it could prove to be the quick-fix that returns him to his best form and enables Ioane and not Reece to be the hottest property at the World Cup.

Title-time for MCUFC Both of the Mid Canterbury United Football Club’s senior men’s football teams have secured division titles, with the Division 1 team securing the title in a rare mid-week game on Thursday night.

The side travelled to Foster Park to take on Nomads United under the lights, and came away with a big 9-0 victory.

They controlled the game from the start and led early through striker Luke Martin, who pounced with less than five minutes on the clock.

Despite some swift counter-attacking from Nomads, goalkeeper Martin Fitzgerald was only called in to action on a handful of occasions.

Mid Canterbury turned in four more goals before the halftime whistle.

The second half carried on much the same as the first, with Mid Canterbury turning the screws, putting four more goals on.

In total Martin scored three, Gareth Tolley and Jamie Smitheram score two goals each and Millar McLauchlan and Luciano Drudi picked up one each.

The side will be on a quick back-up today, taking on the Cashmere Technical FC Turtles at the Ashburton Domain.

After securing their league title last week, the Mid Canterbury second team will take their place in the Division 5 cup today as well, hosting the Nomads United AFC Pressies at the Ashburton Domain.

Both games begin at 2.30pm.

The Methven FC seniors were set to play Burwood AFC in their Division 3 Cup clash this weekend, but owing to Burwood defaulting, they will have the weekend off and will progress straight to the final.

The Methven FC reserves still have two league games to play, and will travel to Avondale Park today to play Parklands United.

Kearney shuts down Warriors CEO A big day of league in Timaru

A big day of rugby league will get under way in Timaru this morning, starting with the future stars of the game.

The first games of the Aoraki junior rugby league competition will take place at Timaru’s Ashbury Park today, and they’ll be followed by the big boys, when the Aoraki Eels take on the Otago Whalers in the Eels’ second match of the South Island premiership.

Junior league teams from the Ashburton Barbarians, Timaru Outlaws and Country Cowboys teams will get the day started.

The Barbarians under-8s will play the two under-8 Outlaws teams – Outlaw Blues at 10.45am and Outlaw Reds at 11.25am – while the Barbarians’ under-10 teams will play the Outlaws at

11.15am and the Cowboys at midday.

In under-12s action, the Barbarians will play the Outlaws at 11am and the Cowboys at 11.45am.

The day’s main game, between senior match between the Aoraki Eels and the Otago Whalers will then get under way at 1pm.

It will be the Eels’ second game of the South Island premiership, which they began with a loss to Southland in Invercargill last weekend, and next weekend both the Eels and the junior teams will make their way to Ashburton for their next rounds.

Today’s Eels’ squad will feature Seamus Smyth from the Chertsey Oilers in the starting line-up, while Leps Seitava from the Ashburton Barbarians is in the reserves.

Warriors’ coach Stephen Kearney has instructed his CEO Cameron George to refrain from speaking out on football matters, in response to George’s recent comments on the lack of effort among some members of the playing group.

In the wake of the Warriors dismal 42-6 defeat to the Roosters last Sunday, which effectively ended their finals hopes for 2019, George told Radio Sport that the output of some players across the season had been well below par.

The CEO also said several players were under the microscope, but the fact they were already on contract for next season was a mitigating fact.

It was an unusual admission from a CEO, and Kearney sent a not-so-subtle message yesterday.

“I don’t think it is a good idea for us to be to-ing and fro-ing and playing that out in the media,” said Kearney.

“My personal opinion is that that’s my job to do that. He’s the CEO of the footy club but when we are talking about the footy team and the effort of individuals that is my responsibility to make individuals aware of that.”

“I’ve seen the headline and I didn’t bother reading the rest of it,” said Kearney of the article espousing George’s views. “I just thought that’s my position in terms of the coach to be making comments about the players.

Kearney, who has been based in Australia with his team this week, as they stayed on after the Roosters game, confirmed he had spoken to George since his comments were aired and made the demarcation of responsibilities clear.

He also defended the squad, saying their performances over the last two

months had been mostly solid.

“If you look at last weekend, there might have been some occasions during the period of that game where that could have been the case (lack of effort),” said Kearney.

“But over the course of the last nine weeks, we’ve had two occasions where we haven’t taken our best performance to the footy ground … that’s against Canberra and the Roosters.

“Prior to that I thought we had made some really good progress, but again, in this competition, that’s not acceptable. We need to make sure we are putting in the effort this week.”

On one level some of George comments’ could have been interpreted as backing Kearney – shifting the main onus of responsibility from the coach and onto the playing group, but the tension at Mt Smart is understandable.

It’s been a season that has disappointing on several levels.

Few players have improved on their 2018 output and only a handful could be judged as having performed up to their potential.

The Warriors have flopped at home, with only two wins from nine games at their Penrose base, and overall managed just two victories against top eight opposition.

The CanInspire Charitable Trust was founded in 2010 with the intention of providing workshops for those affected by illness, trauma or loss. The CanBead programme is hugely successful and the jewellery making programme is growing throughout New Zealand. The Trust employs workshop tutors and also relies on a large number of dedicated volunteers.

The Trust now wants to focus on duplicating the CanBead success with the CanTackle programme, whereby participants learn fly fishing skills, as a fun distraction, a sense of purpose and accomplishment in a supportive and caring environment.
