Retailers heard, parking is free BY SUE NEWMAN

FULL STORY
Ashburton’s retailers went head to head with the Ashburton District Council over parking issues in the inner town and won. The retailers believed faulty East Street meters were providing a disincentive to people coming into the town centre to shop and those meters were adding to the already difficult retail climate in Ashburton, they said. A delegation of business owners spoke to councillors in July, presenting a petition calling for the meters to be scrapped
and replaced with a one hour parking limit. The council’s response was to reduce the parking fee, but wouldn’t have solved the problem; the issue wasn’t about money, it was about failing meters and the frustration that caused for shoppers, retailer Caroline Cameron said. The council listened and changed its mind. While the retailers suggested smart parking domes could be installed in each of the 83 parking spaces to alert wardens when a vehicle had been parked for one hour, the council’s option has been to monitor vehicles by chalking the
tyres of over-parkers. How ever parking was monitored, the retailers have achieved their goal and that was cause for celebration, Cameron said. “We’re very pleased they’ve gone with this down the main street because people were really concerned about the pay and display machines. This was never about money, it was about unreliability and inconvenience,” she said.
