THE INDEPENDENT VOICE OF MID CANTERBURY
Sri Lanka blast scary for family By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

A trip that was meant to be the experience of a lifetime has been tinged with sadness for one Mid Canterbury teen after the tragic events of the Easter Sunday bombings in Sri Lanka. Christchurch Boys’ High School student Archie Redfern is currently on tour in the island nation with the Willows Club’s youth cricket tour squad. The group had been in the country for nearly a week after previously visiting Malaysia before the attack happened in Colombo, including three days in the capital city, but had fortunately moved to another city, Archie’s father, Hamish Redfern, said. “They arrived in Colombo on Monday (April 15) and stayed there for three days and played two matches and luckily they shifted on to Kandy after that,” he said. “They were just leaving to go to Galle when it happened.” Fortunately, the Redferns in New Zealand received an email from the organisers of the trip letting them know what had happened and that the group was safe before they saw the news for themselves. “It was definitely a good thing we heard from them first, it was all quite scary,” he said. All social media was blocked in Sri Lanka following the attack, giving the family an anxious period of time as they waited for further news. “We didn’t hear from them for quite a few hours after that so it was quite a relief to hear from them again,” he said. The attack targeted churches and luxury hotels, just like the ones the tour group had been staying in throughout the
trip. “That did make things a bit more scary, it turned out that the hotel that we had stayed at in Colombo was next door to one of the ones that was attacked,” he said. “It is horrible to think how it easily could’ve been them sitting down for breakfast.”
