Union probes rugby brawl Investigations are continuing into an incident during a senior B rugby match on Saturday where it has been alleged a player was kicked in the head. A feisty encounter between Hampstead and Collegiate came to a head late in the game when the two sides broke into a fight resulting in the match being called off with 15 minutes left to play. The incident drew large comment and speculation on social media on Sunday night and throughout yesterday and Mid Canterbury Rugby Union boss, Ian Patterson said the union was working hard to get an outcome from their investiga-

tions which were continuing yesterday. “As you can imagine, there’s a lot to be worked through and without the access to video footage it’s even more difficult,” he said. Meanwhile, in a statement to The Guardian, the Hampstead Rugby Club said they were keen to focus on the positive aspects of the club while assisting the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union. “The club is co-operating with the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union to gather the facts and deal with them in an appropriate manner,” the statement said. “Our club does not endorse aggressive

behaviour by anyone and will deal with the facts once made available. “We would like to focus on the JAB seven a side tournament that kicks off our JAB season on Saturday and the other 100 plus members that are positively involved in our club and wanting to play rugby in Mid Canterbury.” The match was originally scheduled for 1pm on Saturday, but the MCRFU shifted the match to 3.30pm due to a number of Hampstead players not being unavailable until that time due to work commitments as a direct result of the current mycoplasma bovis outbreak.
