Labour Party police spokesman Stuart Nash will investigate how the justice system is dealing with youth crime in Ashburton. Nash was commenting following public meetings in the town where residents aired concerns around offences such as burglary and assault. Hundreds turned out to a meeting on Thursday convened by Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew at Hotel Ashburton to address the youth crime wave. Labour Party Rangitata candidate Jo Luxton also held a public meeting, although this was organised prior and was a political meeting, not aimed solely at
youth crime. It was on Thursday night, held at the Ashburton MSA, and Nash addressed the about 60 people who attended on policing and regional development. Luxton said some who attended the night time meeting had thought it had been organised as a follow-on from the youth crime meeting, however this had not been the case. Nevertheless, it had been good to hear the many concerns of residents. “People are feeling frustrated and rightly so,” Luxton said. She said the take-home message for herself and Nash had been that police, security firms and the community were working hard and doing all the right
things when it came to getting on top of youth crime, but the perception was that it was falling down at the level of the judiciary. This message would be taken back to the party’s spokesperson for justice, Jacinda Ardern. Conversations which arose at such meetings could help guide policy going forward. Nash said following the meeting he would be putting written questions to the Minister of Justice to find out how the youth court in Ashburton was dealing with juvenile offending, in terms of placement in youth facilities, curfews and other interventions. He would be investigating the matter on behalf of the community.
