It’s our place, our money – have a say W

hen it comes to how a local authority runs its business, they’re more likely to get brickbats than bouquets from ratepayers.

But occasionally they do something that even the most cynical has to admit is more than halfway decent.

And in launching the It’s Our Place campaign, the Ashburton District Council has come up with a winner that’s the ultimate in community consultation.

We’re all quick to criticise the council for ignoring what we want and what we say. Often we’re absolutely right.

Yes, the council must consult its community on big issues, before it makes big decisions, that’s part of the local government game. Consultation can mean many things; often it means lip service.

But this time around, in the lead-up to its long-term community plan discussions, Ashburton’s council is going above and beyond.

Basically, the plan itself is a pretty boring piece of work.

It takes rates money and matches that against the council’s work wishlist.

It locks spending in for the next 10 years and often ratepayers are left wondering where the cash is actually going.

The infrastructural stuff is boring but important.

We know it has to be done and we’re not experts when it comes to deciding how much is spent and where.

But when it comes to the exciting stuff – the new projects, the

community projects, we most definitely want to have our say.

And this year we’ve been given that opportunity.

It’s a hearts and minds exercise that doesn’t ask very much of any of us – other than a few minutes of our time.

The council wants to know what we think should happen in the district over the next 10 years.

There are no rules, no restrictions, the options are only limited by our imaginations.

We can list the three things we think are most important for our future. It’s that simple. Do it online or on paper, the council doesn’t care.

It just wants those ideas, it wants to know it’s spending our money where we want it.

Once the ideas are in they’ll be collated and we’ll have another chance to say what we think about all of the ideas – not just our own.

Finally we’ll be able to see each of those ideas with costs against them. That will be the reality check.

The council has done something unprecedented here.

It’s opened the door for people to say exactly how they want the place we call home to grow and develop over the next 10 years.

Its success is in our hands.

We’ve been given a wonderful opportunity; we’re fools if we don’t take it.

If councillors choose to turn their back on the community’s wishes, then they could well pay the price at the ballot box in 2019.

Huge crowds anticipated

If you put a toll gate at either end of Ashburton on Monday you’d probably be an overnight millionaire.

With two major events on in town that day, locals and visitors by the thousand will be on the streets, snapping up bargains.

Monday signals the opening of the annual bookfest, Bookarama, that sees many thousands of books sold at bargain basement prices as part of the Rotary Club of Ashburton’s annual fundraiser. All money raised during the week-long event goes to charity.

The event attracts book collectors from around the South Island and while its doors open at 8am, crowds are usually queuing well down Tancred Street as bibliophiles vie to be first through the Sports Hall doors when business starts.

After months of sorting books, Rotarians moved stocks into the Sports Hall last week and began

the long job of setting up trestle tables according to book categories.

That’s always made a little more difficult because books continue to be dropped off at the venue adding to the volume.

Yesterday, with a full weekend of work ahead of them, convener Bob Engelbrecht said the sorting team was finally winning – just.

This year is Ashburton’s 38th Bookarama and Rotarians hope when the takings are counted when doors close on Saturday they’ll have topped a million dollars raised over those years.

While Bookarama runs for a week, Monday’s Boulevard Day is a one-day event with a 40-year plus history.

It has variously been run by the Ashburton Retailers’ Association, the Ashburton Business Association and then by Carol Johns for the association. Today it’s run by Sue Cooper and Bob McDonald.

The event turns a small profit each year and that’s tucked away

as seed funding for the next year, McDonald said.

Stallholders are charged for their space, with locals paying a reduced rate, service clubs a nominal rate, while community groups are given space for free.

McDonald and Cooper take a nominal amount to cover their own costs and time, but that’s a rate they’d never get rich on – it would work out to around $5 an hour, he said.

“We don’t do it for nothing, but you certainly wouldn’t do it as a commercial venture.”

The day is too valuable for the district to let it drop off the calendar, McDonald said, and while there’s a fair amount of work involved in pulling it all together, the benefits for the district are huge.

With just two days until the street day opens for business, 98 per cent of stalls had been taken but calls were still coming from people wanting to be part of the event, he said.

2017 dubbed ‘year it didn’t stop raining’

By LiSa BeNoit Rainfall records have been smashed right across the country, with Hamilton, Ruakura, Rotorua and Taupo topping the list.

Hamilton has already had its quota of rain for the year, with 1271mm falling since January, while its normal annual rainfall is 1202mm.

“For many of us, 2017 may well be remembered as the year it didn’t stop raining,” MetService meteorologist Georgina Griffiths said.

Te Puke has seen its second wettest January-September period with 2020mm, the most rain on record since 1958.

It is the same story for the South Island, with Canterbury already receiving well over its annual rainfall, with three months still to go.

Dial the number, listen to the answerphone message, it’s a moment in history … “Hello, this is Jo Goodhew, MP for Rangitata …”

That’s the message that’s greeted constituents for 12 years, but come Sunday morning, the phone will ring and the message will be very different.

Yesterday Goodhew performed her final duties as the electorate’s member of parliament and she couldn’t be happier. In January she made the decision to retire at this year’s election and it’s a decision she’s never regretted.

“I can’t believe that I’ve done what I always wanted to do, love this job until I left and I have.

I’m loving this right up until the last day – and then I’ll leave,” she said.

Her last official duties were attending a building completion ceremony at the Fineboon plant in the Ashburton Business Estate, unveiling a plaque and planting two trees at her old school, Timaru Girls’ High.

She wrapped up the day as a human placard for the National Party on the streets of Timaru before winding down over a glass of wine and toasting the end of the election campaign.

Today she might not have her future hanging on the outcome of the election, but that doesn’t make the event any less stressful.

She plans to be in Ashburton tonight at National Party headquarters. And she’ll be watching the numbers as anxiously as anyone.

“I’ll be on the edge of my seat.

I’ve got 12 years of work invested in the result so hopefully I’ll be congratulating Andrew (Falloon),” she said.

Over the past few days Goodhew has been clearing out her electorate offices in Ashburton and Timaru, sending off final emails, packing up 12 years of memories and handing over door keys to her electorate secretaries.

And over the past few days there have been no regrets, no wondering whether she’d made the right decision in retiring.

“It feels right, it feels like I’ve made the right decision for me and I honestly feel I’ve separated myself from this.”

Whatever the outcome of the election, Goodhew will wake up tomorrow morning for the first time in 12 years as just plain Jo Goodhew, no title, no tags, no public responsibilities.

She’ll have a final caucus meeting on Tuesday that all retiring MPs are invited to and she’ll be available to her successor if needed, but otherwise her life is a blank canvas.

“This time next week we’ll (with husband Mark) be winging our way to somewhere nice and warm on holiday.

“I’ll have two weeks relaxing and then I’ll come back and look at options.”

Coming home will kickstart a new stage in her life and Goodhew says she couldn’t be more excited about the challenges and opportunities that will present.

The man who set himself alight on parliament grounds has died in hospital.

The man suffered critical burns after setting himself on fire in what appeared to be a protest on Thursday afternoon.

Police confirmed he died in Wellington Hospital overnight.

No further details were available.

One of the man’s placards carried an unclear message about taking children away from mothers and stopping the murder of fathers.

Ceremony marks facility completion

About 30 new jobs will be created once the new goat milk infant formula canning facility in Ashburton is up and running in mid November, after validation and commissioning processes were completed.

An official ceremony was held yesterday to celebrate the completion of the facility, which is located in North Park.

Built by the New Zealand Dairy Collaborative, the factory and warehouse build took about 12 months, NZDCL general manager Brad Harden said.

The canning facility would take goat milk powder dried in Hamilton and blend it with vitamins and minerals needed in infant formula, before it was put into 900gm cans for export to China and Australia.

Harden said it was capable of producing about 16,500 cans of formula per day, with room for a second chain to be installed at a later date, which, if that was to happen, would double the capacity.

It was hoped that the plant would employ up to 80 people in the future.

The main shareholder in NZDCL is Fineboon Foods, China’s

major infant formula goat milk powder brand owner. New Zealand investors are also involved in the co-operative.

The factory completion ceremony was attended by a number of dignitaries who flew from China especially for the event.

They included vice-governor of Shaanxi province, Feng Jiang and founder and current chief executive of Fineboon Foods John Zhang.

The ceremony began with a welcome by Borough School’s kapa haka group, before an official ribbon cutting by Jiang, Ashburton District Mayor Donna Favel and Jo Goodhew, in one of her last jobs as Rangitata MP. Goodhew later told the gathering that the last time she had an official role in a ceremony at a goat milk facility, a goat bit her on the nose.

She congratulated everyone involved in the project, both local and Chinese investors, for working together to produce a product she was sure would be much sought after.

It was particularly pleasing, she said, that the region was adding to the number and type of primary producers operating in the area.

“This is a great example of investment growing in our region, offering opportunities for our farmers to diversify how they farm.”

Longbeach students fundraise to save pool

Longbeach School became an underwater wonderland yesterday, when students donned sea-inspired dress-ups to give their community pool a brighter future.

Members of the student council organised a sausage sizzle, gold coin collection, hot chocolates and a lolly jar to raise funds for the Willowby Pool, while students dressed up in sea and ocean themed costumes.

committee member Jayne McLaren said the rain “just swept right through into where the pool is”, depositing silt into the water and making for a long, messy clean-up process.

She said Willowby Pool was a big part of the community.

“It’s a really important part of summer and the kids love it.”

Though they had struggled to get insurance for the damage, McLaren also discovered yesterday that they would qualify for cover. The $610 raised would cover the excess and then give the student council extra funds to put towards school activities of their choice.

“We’re really pleased,” McLaren said.

Livestreaming council meetings trialled locally

Many local authorities now offer live streaming or delayed video coverage of their meetings, but until this week Ashburton was not one of those.

At Thursday’s meeting of the Ashburton District Council, teacher Kate White broke new ground when she recorded councillors at work.

That recording was a trial, but once it’s been tested and any bugs ironed out, White said viewing recorded meetings is likely to be an option for people unable to attend meetings in person.

“I’m a concerned citizen who’d like to see more participation in local government; I believe it’s important people see what’s going on around the council table,” she said.

Many people were interested in local government but were unable to attend meetings. Recorded meetings gave them that option, she said.

While she has no affiliation to the Ashburton Citizens’ Association, White said

she had arranged to utilise their website as her broadcast medium.

For the live feed to be activated, White needs 100 subscribers, but she’s confident that will be achieved.

Council chief executive Andrew Dalziel has previously said that the council did not have the facilities to record meetings itself, but that he was open to members of the public recording open sessions.

“There’s nothing stopping anyone approaching the chairperson of a committee if they want to live stream a meeting.

We’re not set up to do it and there’s a cost; we’d rather an outside party did it. It’s just a courtesy that they ask, but I don’t think there’s any valid reason to object.”

Currently the council did not have the budget to record and download meetings on to its website, but any member of the public could set up a tripod and, using a smart phone, could record and replay meetings, he said.

With a new civic centre in the pipeline, making provision for livestreaming meetings could be up for discussion.

In just three weeks Ashburton’s one-stop information package, the Ashburton App, has been downloaded by more than 2500 people.

The app was launched by the Ashburton Guardian and while the goal is to hit 23,000 downloads, company general manager Desme Daniels said that reaching the 11 per cent mark in just three weeks was a huge achievement.

The app now contains a comprehensive package of information about people, places and events in the Ashburton District and is well on the way to becoming the goto information source for both locals and visitors, she said.

Additional information is regularly added and in the lead-in to today’s election an election button was added that provided information on candidates, voting stations and other electoral news.

That was a good example of buttons that could be added in response to specific events as the app was designed to grow and to provide a constantly-changing information and news feed for the community, Daniels said.

New features are planned for release on October 1.

“Our aim is 23,115 downloads, every mobile user in the Ashburton District, by September 2018. We’re well on our way to achieving this,” she said.

On October 13 the Ashburton A&P button will be launched and, as official show sponsors, the Guardian would bring live updates through the app for the duration of the show.

“It’s been a whirlwind start with businesses clambering to be included on the app and community events coming through to us daily to be included. We’re delighted with the way the community has claimed this as their own,” Daniels said.

As part of the Guardian’s commitment to ensuring every mobile phone user downloaded the app, staff will be sizzling sausages at Mega Mitre 10 on Sunday from 10am.

“We’d love to see you there to have a chat about the app, what you can find on it and to answer questions. We’ll also provide assistance if you need any help downloading,” she said.

Sausages will be free, but donations can be made towards the Prostate Cancer – Blue September appeal.

Mt Somers water given all-clear The Ashburton District Council has lifted a precautionary boil water notice from the Mt Somers water supply.

The quality of the village’s water has returned to normal and no contamination has been detected.

The notice was imposed on Tuesday when monitoring equipment at the facility detected high turbidity – or cloudiness in the water.

High turbidity lowers the effectiveness of the equipment used to

treat water and as a precaution, the council issued a boil water notice.

The Montalto water supply was also issued with a precautionary boil water notice and it is still in place. Montalto residents should continue boiling their water for at least three minutes before consumption, for use in food preparation or hygiene purposes.

High rainfall is likely to have caused the turbidity levels to increase.

Classics trip for college students

Facts from the classroom are about to come alive for a group of Ashburton College classics students who left for Europe on Friday.

Twelve Year 12 and 13 students, along with two teachers , are jetting to Greece and Italy on the

college’s first-ever classics trip.

The trip was first dreamed up by teacher Greta Hampton and is the sum of more than a years planning. Students have been working hard to fundraise by selling pies, peastraw and raffle tickets.

“They’re all very excited,” Hampton said.

“It’s an amazing opportunity to see what they’ve learnt in the classroom in the flesh. I think they’ll come away with some amazing memories.”

The group will spend 19 days away, visiting sites including Athens, Olympia, Pompeii and the Coliseum. Their last two days will be spent enjoying Venice.

Bowling club concerned by tree

If a large redwood tree at the entrance to the Ashburton Bowling Club is not removed, the club might be forced to close its doors, president Murray Anderson said.

The tree towers over the clubrooms and members fear high winds could see it topple onto their building.

It’s a health and safety issue Anderson says and one members are taking seriously.

This week he made a plea to Ashburton District councillors to have the tree removed. He’s spoken to council staff and been told the tree is safe, but says members are far from convinced.

“I sincerely believe we have a safety issue with this tree. The ground and shallow roots move visibly during strong winds and we cannot blatantly disregard people’s safety,” Anderson said.

The redwood has several trunks, one of which is leaning at a 45 degree angle. It is just over three metres from the clubhouse and its branches spread over the clubhouse roof.

Members are forced to clear the roof weekly to keep fallen branches and needles out of the gutters.

“I ask councillors, would you live with a tree such as this up against your home?

It’s not about if the tree will blow over, it’s

when. I sincerely believe we have a safety issue with this tree.”

Anderson said he wrote to the council in July and had met with mayor Donna Favel and councillor Leen Braam onsite but had struggled to convince anyone that there was a significant health and safety issue involved.

The bowling club was established in the Ashburton Domain in 1894 and a clubhouse was built on the current site about 80 years ago.

Anderson suggests the redwood is a similar age, and was possibly planted as part of the clubrooms’ opening.

“If it comes down it’d make matchsticks of the clubrooms and if the trunk that’s on a lean falls it’d smash anything in its way in the car park,” he said.

“It’ll be a sad day if council doesn’t do something. We take health and safety very seriously. The option, the last resort really, would be for the club to close down because of health and safety issues.”

It was ironic, Anderson said, that the council had chosen to fell two trees on the road leading to the club because those trees were too close to where council vehicles travelled in and out from their base.

“I can only assume that was for health and safety reasons but those oregons were only pups in comparison to the large tree that’s 3.6 metres from our clubhouse,” he said.

‘Deranged Trump will pay’ Kim Jong Un has described Donald Trump as “deranged” and Pyongyang’s foreign minister said North Korea may test a hydrogen bomb in the Pacific as the recalcitrant nation hit back at the US president’s latest threats and sanctions.

Trump signed an executive order yesterday boosting the United States’ ability to sanction foreign banks, individuals and companies that facilitate trade with North Korea.

The move “will cut off sources of revenue that fund (North Korea’s) efforts to develop the deadliest weapons known to humankind,” Trump said on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Responding to Trump’s maiden address at the UN in which he threatened to “totally destroy” North Korea if it attacked the US or its allies, Kim Jong Un issued a rare statement describing the speech as “unprecedented rude nonsense”.

Man charged over headbutt on former PM A man has been charged over the alleged assault of former prime minister Tony Abbott in Hobart on Thursday.

Tasmania Police issued a statement saying a 38-year-old man had been charged with one count of common assault following a police investigation into a complaint made by the former Liberal Leader.

Police said the man was granted conditional bail, and is due to appear in court over the incident next month.

Earlier, a staff member who witnessed the alleged assault on the Hobart waterfront revealed the attacker said nothing about same-sex marriage.

The staff member, Sam Jackson Hope, told Sky News at no stage did the attacker ever mention same-sex marriage, although he was wearing a “Yes” campaign badge.

Jackson Hope’s account of the incident supports the public statements of the former Liberal leader, who has said the only words spoken between the two men came when the attacker asked for a handshake and then swore at him after the headbutt.

Abbott told Macquarie Radio Jackson Hope briefly grappled with the man, before he “scarpered off, swearing”.

Prior to the arrest, police described their suspect as a man with short, spiky, sandy-coloured hair and facial piercings, who had been wearing a leather jacket with a “Yes” badge at the time of the incident.

Appearance goes viral A man’s appearance on Police Ten 7 last week has gone viral. The minutelong clip uploaded to the Police Ten 7 Facebook page has now been viewed more than 625,000 times. Daniel McIvor was out getting food in the evening when he spotted the law enforcement team.

“What do you reckon? Shall I pull a bag of meth out?” he asks as he approaches the policeman. I don’t have any meth on me but if I pull a bag of sugar out will you put me on TV?” “Hiiiiiiiiiiii,” he says, waving at the camera, before asking the policeman to arrest him. Search for survivors continues Survivors are still being pulled from rubble in Mexico City as rescue operations stretched into a fourth day, spurring hope among desperate relatives gathered at the sites of buildings collapsed by a magnitude 7.1 earthquake.

Mexico’s federal police said several people were lifted out of the debris of two buildings. Rescuers removed or broke through slabs until they found cracks that allowed workers to wiggle through to reach the victims, then lift them to safety. The city government said 60 people in all had been rescued since the quake hit at midday Tuesday.

Still, with the hours passing, fewer of the living were being found, and the official death toll rose to 273 in Mexico City and several nearby states, with 137 in the capital.

The time was nearing when rescuers would be replaced by bulldozers to clear rubble, but officials went to great pains to say it was still a rescue operation.

The federal civil defence director, Luis Felipe Puente, acknowledged that backhoes and bulldozers were starting to clear away some wrecked buildings where no one had been detected

In brief Maria regains strength Hurricane Maria is continuing to regain strength as it moves towards Grand Turk Island, while the death toll is rising as islands attempt to recover from the storm’s rampage through the southern Caribbean. Maria’s maximum sustained wind speeds had increased to 205 kilometres per hour, with the storm’s eye moving north-west at 15km/h, the US National Hurricane Centre said.

The hurricane has been upgraded to a Category 3. Already-drenched US territory Puerto Rico could see an additional 10 to 20 centimetres of rain, while some locations could see maximum storm total amounts reaching up to 100 centimetres.

buildings collapse said the tragedy could have been much worse. Some buildings didn’t fall immediately, giving people time to escape, and some shattered but left airspaces where occupants survived.

In other cases, the salvation seemed almost miraculous.

Security guard Felix Giral Barron said that after the quake started, he had time to run and tell people to evacuate his building. Then an entire apartment building across the street crumbled and a big tank of heating gas on its roof slid off, but didn’t explode.

Two window cleaners are back on solid ground after a hair-raising plummet down a high-rise building in Melbourne where their platform malfunctioned. The windowcleaning gantry fell several floors and smashed windows before coming to a stop above busy Bourke Street in Melbourne’s CBD yesterday afternoon, the Metropolitan Fire Brigade says.

Firefighters performed a delicate high-angle rescue to reach the men and both were brought to the ground about 4pm. An ambulance spokeswoman said the men were assessed by paramedics.

Serves 4 6-8 Quality Mark lamb shoulder or neck chops Salt and freshly ground pepper for seasoning 1/4 C plain flour 1T butter 2T tomato paste 1/2 C white wine (optional – or use extra stock) 2C Campbell’s Real Stock – Salt Reduced Chicken 3 fresh thyme sprigs or 1t dried thyme 1 stick rosemary 3 bay leaves 4 cloves garlic, chopped 400g can chopped tomatoes 250g baby carrots, peeled and topped 2 spring onions, cut into thirds 200g round green beans, trimmed 1C peas 300g baby potatoes, halved

■ Preheat the oven to 150°C. ■ Lamb: Season the lamb with a little salt and pepper. Place the flour in a bag with the chops and toss to coat. Heat the butter over a high heat in a large ovenproof saucepan (or a regular pan then transfer to a casserole dish later). Sear the chops a few at a time to brown them on both sides. Set the chops aside. Add the tomato paste to the pan and cook for a few minutes on a high heat. Add the wine, if using and let it bubble up for 30 seconds. Add the stock, thyme,

rosemary stick, bay leaves, garlic and the tomatoes. Transfer to an ovenproof dish, cover and cook in the oven for 2 1/2 hours (or transfer to a slow cooker and cook on low for 6-8 hours).

■ Vegetables: Steam the vegetables until tender. Add a little oil, salt and pepper then toss to coat.

■ To serve: Serve the lamb stew in large bowls, topped with freshly steamed vegetables.

Retail petrol supplies in Auckland were “secure”, although Collins said some stations had run out of 95 octane petrol given deliveries of 91 octane and diesel had priority. Z Energy shares were unchanged at $7.39.

Air New Zealand on Thursday said its schedule would return to normal yesterday with the situation stabilising. The shares increased 0.2 per cent to $3.25.

Coca-Cola confirm can size to shrink Coca-Cola has confirmed plans to shrink the size of its cans – but says the price will also be coming down accordingly.

The can size has been reduced by seven per cent, from 355ml to 330ml.

Coca-Cola Oceania spokesman Keith Mason said the move was made following research showing people preferred a smaller size.

Research and consumption trends showed that 330ml was a more convenient and enjoyable amount for individual consumption while at home, Mason said.

“We know from consumer research and consumption trends that the new 330ml can is a more enjoyable amount for personal consumption when at home

compared to the existing 355ml can,” Mason said.

The 355ml multi-pack can size will no longer be available.

“This move is the result of ongoing work to incrementally review our packaging as part of our commitment to help people manage their intake of sugar and consume the right amount for them.”

Mason’s comments followed a refusal to comment by Coca-Cola Amatil (CCA) spokesman Neil Waka on Thursday.

CCA is the bottling partner for Coca-Cola in New Zealand and a separately listed company.

Yesterday another CCA spokesman, Steve Inch, said they had lowered their recommended onshelf price for the 330ml multi

pack cans.

“We don’t set the retail pricing therefore you might see some variation from store to store,” he said.

CCA couldn’t say specifically how much they had recommended the price drop by due to commercial sensitivity.

The new size cans were on sale in multi-packs at New World and Countdown, and both supermarkets were selling the old size cans at a discount online.

A Countdown spokesman said they did not influence can size and the supermarket was “currently in discussions to ensure we have the best prices we can for customers”.

Airlines’ jet fuel allocations at Auckland International Airport increased yesterday, with fewer cancelled flights and Wynyard Wharf set to receive drop-offs this weekend, Energy Minister Judith Collins said.

Carriers’ fuel allocations have been raised to 50 per cent normal from 30 per cent rationing and the country’s main air hub had started returning to business as usual, Collins said in a statement.

Restrictions were imposed earlier this week after damage to the pipeline between the Marsden Point refinery and the Auckland depot disrupted fuel supply, prompting a joint industry and government response.

Warehouse shares fell 0.5 per cent to $2.01 and have dropped 29 per cent this year.

Warehouse Group, known for its flagship ‘red shed’ discount department stores, beat its annual profit forecast after a better-thanexpected second half, and kept its full-year dividend payout unchanged for a third straight year.

Adjusted profit fell 7.7 per cent to $59.2 million in the year ended July 30, from $64.1 million a year earlier.

Net profit slumped 74 per cent to $20.4 million as it wrote down the financial services unit it sold on September 9 by $40.1 million and booked $12.4 million in restructuring costs, about half of which was due to redundancies. Those costs were offset by an $11.5 million gain from property divestments.

The Warehouse has embarked on a three-year strategy to lift profitability by removing the complexity and cost of an inefficient operating model and reshaping the company’s physical footprint to support the digital business.

“The sale of financial services and the Newmarket property has improved our balance sheet and ability to fund our strategy over the next two to three years,” chair Joan Withers said in a statement.

arning. This is a political editorial, but not one about politics. If that makes sense?

Today is about politics of course, but not the kind of politics I want to write about.

New Zealand will for 24 hours be all-encompassed by what the polling booth has to say – but for a handful of people around the country the day will come with some bittersweet emotions.

Because today, for those people, marks the end of their political careers.

And for our own representative, Jo Goodhew, it’s the end of a 12-year run at the forefront of this electorate.

Although she’s not from the Ashburton District, Jo has embraced this place like her own – she’s laughed when we have laughed and she has cried when we have cried, but she’s always been an ever-present figure during her time in the political hot-seat.

But how do we measure Jo’s success best?

Is it by things she’s helped implement? Or events she’s attended and spoken at?

They are all important, but surely it’s the length of time that she’s been in the mix that gives a true indication of just how big a role she’s played.

She’s come up against some more-than-worthy opponents during her time at the helm, but has fended each off with the grace and elegance of the calm and nurturing mother she is as opposed to the usual political misconception.

But above all else, what makes Jo Goodhew a wonderful MP is that she’s leaving on her own terms.

Irrespective of the result today, or the party she stands for, Goodhew’s the one who has called time on her political career.

She could have stood again.

But she chose not to, instead she’s handed on the baton and offered her best wishes.

If that’s not a sign of someone going out on top, then what is?

So, as she watches everything unfold today – naturally with some strong mixed emotions – we hope that Jo feels proud of what she’s achieved and what she’s done for the people of this district.

Because we should be definitely proud of her.

elcome to National Democracy Day, otherwise known as Election Day. The beauty about an election is it gives everyone a chance to believe they have had a say in the shaping of the country.

Winston Churchill said: “The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.”

So average voter, it’s time to get out your red or blue or green or even yellow undies, shave your nose hair and put on your corduroys and head to the polling booth.

I love the feeling that my two little ticks could end or begin someone’s career.

I have the power to award someone lifetime perks while I am old and cuddle my one-bar heater, eating cat food and writing letters to the paper under the pseudonym of ‘Mother of Five’.

Our election is a popularity contest with none of the glamourous contestants.

The current system is bizarre when you think about it. The winner is not those who got the most votes, it is the one who can form a ruling government.

How strange it must be for a list MP to be sitting there knowing they were not the most popular, but that they got there because the team they joined got a percentage of seats and votes, and they are placed on a list.

List MPs are like the wedding guests you have to invite because your parents want them there.

You see if you take the current polls of the two major parties, they capture the vast majority of votes. In reality this is just like the first past the post system from years ago.

And on your behalf, I have read all of their policies, and found out that they are exactly the same!

That’s right, the two major parties have identical policies! They both use letters you can find in the alphabet.

So my cunning plan consists of those two teams joining forces, thus meaning most voters got what they wanted – their team in parliament.

I reckon the two leaders could sort of be Prom King and Queen.

Popular for a short while, then live out the rest of their perk-filled retirement singing Glory Days by

Bruce Springsteen.

Admit it my little Ashburtonian – it’s a brilliant plan. Then we would have no need for a Kingmaker because we have a popular duet instead.

The happy couple could be a shining example of C.R.A.P. (Couple Responsible for All the People) leadership. They could write books about how to be friends and sell them to the North Koreans and the US. Just like a marriage they could come to an arrangement about who gets what policy in action. If he does the lawn on the weekend, then she will let him pass his little bill on affordable housing. If she makes his lunch for work, then he will let have her way about immigration.

Oh then their offspring could be a joint decision on education – what a winner for the 1.12 million under 18-year-olds who

Yip – I know my plan sounds crazy, but when you listen to the bickering and posturing and endless policy announcements that are the national anthem of an election campaign, I think there is merit in it.

Remember, there are 50 cities around the world that have more than our entire population in them and they are ruled by one mayor. So make sure you get out and vote for what you want, especially if you think the other party’s policies are wrong or stupid, because you can’t fix stupid, but you can sure vote it out.

Arch-rivals face off again

If Mid Canterbury are going to keep their Meads Cup aspirations alive, they will have no choice but to put Wanganui on the chopping block today.

The Butcher Boys are coming off having their 18 match winning streak broken by South Canterbury, and Hammers cocoach Craig Dunlea is expecting them to be hurting.

“They will be up for it, no doubt, and that is the whole challenge of footy,” he said.

“It is a must-win game for

us, and it really is a bit of a test match.

“They are a pretty big pack and have some big midfielders that will run hard, so it will be a very combative game.”

Injury forced rotations have continued to disrupt the Hammers’ front three, with Tom Heywood returning for the injured Adam Stewart.

“Adam was really good last week but he came off injured and hasn’t recovered for this week,” he said.

After making it through the full 80 minutes last week, Seta

Koroitamana retains his place at openside flanker. For the first time this season first-five Jason Kjestrup drops to the bench after battling illness during the week.

“He has been crook all week and was getting the early symptoms of pneumonia so he has been on antibiotics but was feeling a lot better today (yesterday),” Dunlea said.

Fullback Jarred Percival fills his place at first-five, and having played there for the majority of the 2016 season, Dunlea has no concerns about how he will perform.

“He is a good player and a very attacking player, so it will be good to see how he goes,” he said.

This opens space for Maleli Sau to move to fullback, the position from which he scored a hat-trick against Southern in this year’s Watters Cup. “He is a dangerous asset and one of those x-factor players and I think he is quite excited to get out there and express himself,” Dunlea said.

After getting back in the winning column last week, Dunlea said the atmosphere amongst

the team has lifted.

“You could see it on the training pitch this week that the guys were feeling a lot better,” he said.

“This week we have to do everything we can to move on and up the standard from last week.”

In brief Golf champs finals By the end of today, both Tinwald and Methven Golf Club will know who their club champs are. Both winners of last year’s major titles are back to defend their crowns at the Tinwald Golf Club, with Bronwyn Flannery facing off against Jo Peacock in the women’s final, while Nigel Heney will look to see off the challenge of Regan Stills. Eighteen other golfers will contest nine matches over 36 holes, with the earliest tee time at 9am. In Methven, Dayle Lucas and C J Middleton will duke it out in the men’s final, while Gayle O’Duffy and Angela Mowbray will face off in the women’s final. Another 10 golfers will contest the other finals, starting earlier than their Tinwald counterparts, with the first tee time of 8am.

Mental health fears

Beauden Barrett has been called into the All Blacks squad as late cover for Lima Sopoaga.

Barrett called in to All Blacks Beauden Barrett has been called back in to the All Blacks.

Barrett, who was initially rested for the All Blacks’ Rugby Championship trip to Argentina, has now been included as a late call-up.

Barrett will be replacing Lima Sopoaga, whose partner is awaiting the birth of their first child.

Sopoaga was set to start his first test in 799 days, after impressing on his starting debut in a 27-20 win over the Springboks

in 2015.

With Sopoaga now unavailable, Barrett will likely be backed up by Damian McKenzie.

Despite Barrett being called back in, midfielder Ryan Crotty, locks Sam Whitelock and Brodie Retallick and loose forwards Liam Squire and Sam Cane have all been rested for next weekend’s clash.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen says it is an important time of year to keep players fresh, with

the world champions keen to retain their standards through to late November at the end of another travel-heavy programme.

“This is the hardest time of the year for us, so we are just trying to think outside the box and think of ways to keep the players fresh,” he said.

“This also gives us a chance to build player depth and experience.”

‘Lions would have swept ABs’ if Eddie was coach England loose forward Billy Vunipola says the British and Irish Lions would have swept the All Blacks in the drawn June series if England coach Eddie Jones was in charge of the side.

Vunipola, who pulled out of the New Zealand tour due to a shoulder injury, made the comments after Lions loosie Sean O’Brien criticised Warren Gatland and the Lions coaching staff.

On Thursday, Irish flanker O’Brien told Irish radio station Newstalk that the Lions would have won the series ‘comfortably’ if it wasn’t for overtraining.

Vunipola told BBC radio show Radio Four Today that Jones, the current England coach, would have done a better job than Gatland.

“I wasn’t there on tour but I guess if he (O’Brien) is saying it and the authority he said it with, he’s probably right.

“For me to sit here and say the Lions would have probably won is wrong. But personally my opinion is that if Eddie Jones went as coach they would have

Since Jones took over as England coach the side have lost just one of their 20 tests. They haven’t, however, faced the All Blacks – a team they have beaten just once in their last 15 tests.

“I don’t know how he would have done it, but Eddie would have found a way. Eddie has changed our mindset at England from always accepting we can’t always be too outspoken and confident and he’s really helped us as a team to kick on.”

O’Brien started in all three tests of the drawn series which

ended with a controversial 15-15 draw at Eden Park.

The 30-year-old, who has played 49 tests for Ireland and five for the Lions, said Gatland and the Lions coaching staff mismanaged the training schedule during the five week tour.

“To be honest, I’d be pretty critical of it because I think we should have won the tour and we probably should have won it comfortably,” O’Brien said in an interview with Irish radio station Newstalk.

“There’s the best players in the world on a Lions tour. I know you are playing the best team in the world but with the quality and strength in depth we had, we probably should have won the tour. It wasn’t down to fatigue. It was probably management a bit, in terms of how our weeks went.

“The first week, we definitely over-trained on the Thursday and maybe the coaches were panicking a little bit about getting the information into us. On the first week [of the first Test], we had a triple [session] day,

[the] lads’ legs were heavy on the Thursday and we were playing the All Blacks on Saturday.

The Lions lost the opening test 30-15 at Eden Park before bouncing back to take the second test 24-21, handing the All Blacks their first home loss since 2009.

A victory in the third and final test would have secured the Lions their first series win in New Zealand since 1971. O’Brien says the squad were again overtrained on the eve of the final game.

“We did nearly a similar thing in the last week. So maybe it’s more [from] a coaching point of view, in terms of taking lessons.

Less is more sometimes on a tour like that, rather than trying to pick things up at the end of the week.

“There was probably no need for that but it’s just the way it was managed. We had said it, at the time, and they pulled back a bit. But it’s just about getting that fine balance between players and coaches and making sure the group is ready to rock.”

Western Force stalwart Pek Cowan has spoken of his concern for his teammates’ mental health and lack of support since the club’s Super Rugby axing. One of two inaugural players remaining at the club, the Wallabies prop says the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) is oblivious to how the decision has impacted the Force playing group. Tossing up his next move, the 31-yearold admits part of him wants to say “stuff you” to the ARU by staying in Perth and having the final year of his contract paid out.

But he is more concerned for his teammates, who he says “aren’t themselves”. “I can’t believe the ARU have not come to see us, much less put structures in place to help players in moments of hardship.”

Origin coach full-time The next NSW State of Origin coach won’t have an affiliation with an NRL club. The NSW Rugby League (NSWRL) board resolved yesterday to adhere to its policy of a full-time coach when they employ Laurie Daley’s replacement. NSWRL chief executive David Trodden said the board would now identify candidates over the next two months. “The overriding consideration is to avoid, for both the coach’s benefit and players’ benefit, perceptions of conflict of interest, also the reality of conflicts of interest in selecting players,” Trodden said.

Korczyk dropped Queensland Reds flanker Adam Korczyk has been dropped from the Wallabies squad that will tour South Africa and Argentina for the next round of Rugby Championship matches. Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has chosen not to replace him, meaning the touring squad will reduce from 33 to 32 members. The Wallabies depart for Johannesburg today as they aim to go one better against the Springboks following the 23-all draw in Perth two weeks ago. They then head to Buenos Aires to face Argentina on October 8. That is a rematch of last week’s clash in Canberra, when the Wallabies beat the Pumas 45-20. Three uncapped players in Lukhan Tui, Billy Meakes and Izaia Perese are vying for their Wallabies debut over the next fortnight.

Apart, and each thinks the other will be knocked out, with Parker saying in an interview with the New Zealand media that he could see fear in Fury’s eyes in the traditional post-conference stare-down held at Old Trafford yesterday, and Fury telling IFL TV he would knock out the Kiwi in the fourth round. “I’m going to make easy work of it,” the Englishman said.

If the build-up to this fight at Manchester Arena has seemed interminable, that’s because it has.

It was first scheduled for May in Auckland, only for Fury to pull out late with a back injury, but spare a thought too for the protagonists, who have been asked the same questions for more than a week now and are perhaps looking to up the ante as the night finally draws near.

“He’s a good fighter but I do believe he’s scared deep down because he knows that belt is coming home with me,” Fury said in an interview once the main press conference was over.

“He’s coming here as a champion but he’s leaving empty-handed.”

Not according to Parker he’s not. “I could see fear in his eyes,” he said. “There’s no fear in my eyes – I’m ready.”

Asked what gave him that impression, Parker said: “He took a big gulp ... I thought, ‘mate, you’re scared’.

“He should have fought me back then when I was 50 or 60 per cent [in May]. I’m 100 per cent now so he’s in for it.”

If more tickets are sold and more tune into the fight on the back of the tough talk then so much the better for all involved.

Pressed on the lacklustre sales, he doubled down on his earlier assertion that Parker, 25, and Fury, 23, are at the start of their professional careers and are yet to make names for themselves, ignoring perhaps the fact that Parker is the WBO world champion with probably the quickest hands in the division and a genuine heavyweight force.

“That’s the way boxing is now – there’s so many events, the titles are splintered,” Hennessy said by way of mitigation. “This is a great fight, I agree with you, it’s better than other fights around at the moment but there are a lot of fights on sale and in the same area.”

Both camps agree there will be no excuses should their fighter lose. Parker has come off one of his best ever camps and looks sharp in training – his movement, flow and timing perhaps at career-best level.

“The training camp is where you do all the hard work,” Parker said “The fight is the reward and I’m looking to get my reward.”

Fury has fully recovered from a debilitating skin condition which has put a handbrake on his career to this point, although, it must be said, he has never fought a boxer of Parker’s quality.

Significantly, this fight will be one of the first events held at the Manchester Arena since the suicide bombing of Ariana Grande’s concert in May which killed 22, including children.

Evans gets new Jaguar deal Kiwi Mitch Evans and Brazilian Nelson Piquet Jr have been confirmed as Panasonic Jaguar Racing’s two drivers for the 2017-18 Formula E championship.

Evans returns for his second season with the team after impressing in his rookie season despite a lessthan-competitive car.

He has agreed to a new, longerterm deal which is understood to make him the second highest paid Kiwi driver behind Indycar star Scott Dixon.

“After such a great season it’s fantastic to be continuing with Panasonic Jaguar Racing in season four,” the 23-year-old said.

“As a team, we are moving in the right direction, and I can’t wait for the kick-off in Hong Kong.”

The British team is expecting to be

far more competitive in what is season four of the all-electric category having played catch-up last season – their first in the sport.

“We are hugely excited to have Nelson on board for season four,” team director James Barclay said.

“Mitch was one of the outstanding rookies of the season with some great qualifying and race performances.

“With our new driver line-up we are aiming to be a strong challenger on the grid, regularly competing for points. We have taken a lot of learnings from season three and the team have been working extremely hard throughout the off-season, focusing on the design and development of the new Jaguar I-TYPE 2.”

The season begins in Hong Kong in December.

Locals face southern onslaught

Both of Mid Canterbury’s rugby league sides will be back in action this weekend as they take on opposition teams from down south.

The Chertsey Oilers will get

their second crack at a first home game of the season this week after their match last week was moved to Collegiate due to a goalpost issue.

After going down narrowly to the Ashburton Barbarians 38-26 last week, they will be hopeful

of their chances up against the Timaru Outlaws, who were on the receiving end of a trashing from the Country Cowboys 7014.

The Barbarians will be looking to make it two from two for the season when they face the Cow-

boys, but will know it will be a tough challenge after seeing how they accounted for the Outlaws.

The Oilers will get things under way at 2pm at the Chertsey Domain, while the Barbarians and Cowboys kick-off at 3pm at Ashbury Park.

Is Mannering still wanted by the Kiwis?

By DaviD SKiPwith Former Kiwis captain Simon Mannering is one of three senior players under pressure to retain or reclaim their spots with national selectors divided over whether to include him in their World Cup squad.

Most Kiwis fans would have Mannering among the first players picked, however the Warriors’ stalwart’s inclusion is not guaranteed and his potential role remains the topic of great debate among the Kiwis’ brains trust.

Kiwis coach David Kidwell is understood to be a strong advocate of Mannering and eager to have him among his 24-man squad.

But Kidwell and fellow selectors Tawera Nikau, Hugh McGahan and Tony Iro are yet to determine how or where the 42-test veteran fits into plans to drastically revamp the side’s style of play.

Incumbent hooker Issac Luke is another who could pay the price for the Warriors poor NRL season, while Sydney Roosters frontrower Jared Waerea-Hargreaves

Simon Mannering needs to produce a block-buster performance in tonight’s grand final qualifier against North Queensland, to prove he’s deserving of a test recall.

“Those are the things that we have to deliberate over as selectors, but Simon’s one of those players that you know what you’re going to get out of him week-in and week-out,” Nikau explained.

“But is that going to be good enough to play the brand of football that we need? Those are the discussions and the debates that

we are currently having at the moment.

“Everyone will say that he’s the heart and soul of the Warriors, but at the end of the day, we’ve going to pick a squad that’s going to play a style of football that David wants to play, but also be able to challenge the Aussies, the English, Samoans and Tongans.

“Those are the tough conversations and debates that we need to have.”

A Kiwis squad without Mannering is almost unthinkable. But even if he does make the cut for the end of season tournament, he may find himself relegated to a spot on the interchange bench.

“There is some discussion and debate about that,” said Nikau.

“Is he starting or coming off the bench? There’s a whole lot of those different conversations (happening).

“But it’s (about) what does he actually bring to the team. You know what you’re going to get out of him.

“There are those debates. We’re having those conversations.”

Kidwell, together with recently

appointed technical analyst and veteran NRL coach, Brian Smith, have formulated a plan to improve the Kiwis struggling attack.

A change in tactics is desperately needed. The Kiwis have lost their last four tests against the Kangaroos and managed just one win from six starts since Kidwell replaced former coach Stephen Kearney last September.

“David’s got a game plan to change that and has had a look at trying to exploit how we want to play in the World Cup,” said Nikau.

“Coming up with a plan to be able to do that and deliver is quite exciting. There’s a really great opportunity for us to expand and develop and bring something different to the table.

“Picking a team that fits that is a key job for us as selectors.”

The Kiwis forwards will be given greater licence to use the ball, with halves Shaun Johnson and Kieran Foran and fullback Roger Tuivasa-Sheck instructed to play at the line and provide constant support through the middle of the ruck.

Sydney Roosters prop Dylan Napa has waved a red rag in front of Jason Taumalolo by describing him as the key to beating the Cowboys.

Heading into Saturday’s NRL grand final qualifier, Napa’s assessment of the Roosters’ opposition was simple – stop Taumalolo and stop the Cowboys.

However that’s been easier said than done this year.

After making 230-plus metres in back-to-back finals matches, the Cowboys talisman leads the league for running metres with a daunting 4707m.

Before last week’s semi-final, Parramatta publicly challenged Taumalolo to step up to the mark and the reigning Dally M medallist responded with a game-changing 230m effort.

It led Cowboys coach Paul Green to warn rival sides not to poke the bear but regardless, Napa has laid down the gauntlet.

While he said the Cowboys weren’t a one-man band, he said so much of their creativity came off the back of Taumalolo’s work through the middle.

“I think he’s the key, he’s their go-forward,” Napa told AAP. “Jake Granville is quick out of dummy-half and Michael Morgan plays off the back of it.

“We definitely won’t be solely concentrating on one player but it’s been pretty clear all year he’s a star and he’s a beast.”

So how do you stop an irresistible force such as Taumalolo?

According to Napa, you can’t, you just limit the damage.

Last time they met, the Roosters targeted him however he still carved out 206m in the Roosters’ 22-16 round 21 win.

“He won the Dally M last year and he’s probably improved,” Napa said.

“I think Jason’s one of those players you can’t really stop, you can only contain.”

Meanwhile, the Sydney Roosters are wishing North Queensland good luck if the Cowboys believe coach Paul Green is armed with inside information on Trent Robinson’s men.

Green worked as Robinson’s assistant coach during the Roosters’ run to premiership glory in 2013, but the pair will go head-to-head in tonight’s preliminary final at Allianz Stadium.

“When you go on a ride like that, you get quite close,” Robinson said on Fox Sports’ League Life.

“We have remained friends.

We were texting each other during the Manly-Penrith game (in week one of the finals), about the score there and who he was going for.

“It’s good to see what he has done over the last few weeks. It’s a credit to him.”

In brief Dagg’s season over Israel Dagg’s season is over.

An injury to Dagg’s troublesome knee ruled him out of last weekend’s 57-0 mauling of the Springboks in Albany and yesterday the All Blacks confirmed he is out for the season. “Israel Dagg will rest and rehab his knee for the rest of the year and return to rugby in 2018. No need for surgery,” the All Blacks tweeted.

The 66 test veteran missed the first two Bledisloe Cup victories over the Wallabies due to this complaint. He then returned against the Pumas in New Plymouth last week, only for the knee to flare up again. All Blacks coach Steve Hansen admitted last week the prospect of Dagg returning to the field anytime soon look grim. “Doc is pretty confident if he gets the rest he’ll be fine so it probably means he’ll be out for the rest of the year.”

Fast and Furious Racing – T20 style races for NZ Many sports have tried it but now motorsport is the latest to have a crack at a T20 version of their code.

Hampton Downs owner Tony Quinn will introduce Kiwi fans to Fast and Furious Racing this summer – his high action version of motor racing where spectators get all the energy and action of the opening laps mixed with a safety car intervention and a mad dash to the finish.

Strategy, fuel conservation and tyre preservation are terms that are irrelevant in Fast and Furious Racing and it has the potential to keep an audience on the edge of their seats like no other form of the sport.

It would see an entire grid of cars start in the usual manner, race for three laps before a safety car intervenes and bunches the field up again. The safety car pulls into the pits after one

lap and the cars begin a second three-lap battle off a rolling start.

“It’s like sex – it is over and done with before you know it,” Quinn said. “We would award 50 per cent of the points for the first three laps and then the remaining 50 per cent for the second three laps.”

Quinn was a spectator at the New Zealand Grand Prix a couple of years ago when he first came up with the concept. He was sitting on the grass embankment at Manfeild as a regular paying spectator watching a NZ V8 race. While the opening couple of laps were exciting as cars jostled for position, once the order had been established the race became a bit of a procession and he started losing interest.

Then came a safety car and the field bunched up and racing got exciting again.

“It probably appeals more to the beginner level really but it could go all the way up through the classes,” Quinn said.

“If you look at a V8 race the start is always exciting – the first couple of the laps with guys like Shane van Gisbergen coming through – it is always exciting but then it settles down. This will be all-action the whole way.”

And Quinn knows if the idea works – pretty soon every category will be doing it.

“If it is a success everyone else will be doing it and claiming it as their idea and if it doesn’t people will say knew it wasn’t going to work.”

Fast and Furious Racing will make its debut at the Laser Plumbing & Electrical Hampton Downs 500 in the last weekend of October before a second round will take place at Mad Mike’s Summer Bash in December.

How it works: Cars qualify like normal and start the race off the grid as per usual.

■ After three laps a safety car is deployed and cars bunch up for one lap before the safety car pulls away ■ A rolling start begins another three-lap dash to the finish ■ Points are split 50-50 between the two segments of the race ■ Each category partakes in four races in a round ■ Race one grid determined by qualifying positons. Race two reverse grid. Race three is determined by combined times from race 1 and 2 and race four will again be reverse grid ■ Competitors will score points based on where they finish in each of the four races.

The 2018 World Rally Championship calendar has been confirmed and New Zealand has missed out. The 13-round calendar marks the return of Turkey after a seven-year absence. It replaces Poland in the fixture list, which was approved by the FIA World Motor Sport Council in Paris. Just three of the 13 rallies take place outside Europe begging the question about it being far from a world championship. New Zealand seemed certain for a return in 2018 over the past year but once Turkey came into the picture it began to look less likely. Cost was thrown up as an excuse but it seems more likely the financial package offered

Mexican GP to go ahead The Mexican Grand Prix is set to go ahead as planned despite widespread devastation caused by the country’s deadliest earthquake in more than three decades. More than 230 people have been killed, while buildings in Mexico City have been reduced to rubble, following Wednesday’s disaster. Mexico City’s Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit is due to host the 18th round of this year’s 20-race calendar on October 29. Track officials are confident that the race has not been affected. “It’s been inspected twice already, from the track surface and also the buildings, and it’s OK,” Mexican Grand Prix director of marketing Rodrigo Sanchez said.

The Cowan family have a lot riding on Signify at Riccarton today.

Cowan family chase ideal win Kate Cowan gets an opportunity to fulfil a special ambition at Riccarton today.

The Rangitikei jockey is booked to ride Group One winner Signify in the Canterbury Westland Racing Owners’ Association Sprint (1200m), her first ride for her father, Ashburton trainer Snookie Cowan.

Telegraph winner Signify is raced by Cowan’s mum Tracey and the jockey fondly remembers the Perfectly Ready six-year-old gelding joining the stable when she was still living in Ashburton.

“I won’t believe it’s happening till I’m actually legged up on him on Saturday,” Cowan said.

“I’m really excited and actually a bit nervous, but mainly excited.

When I wrote down my goals at apprentice school, one of my goals was to win a race on Signify.

It’s something that would be really special and important to me.

“It might not happen on Saturday but it will happen. My parents don’t have many horses and for me to win on him would mean so much to us all.”

Cowan will claim a 3kg allowance from Signify’s 61.5kg book weight and goes into the race buoyed by an Ashburton trial win

in which her mount was kept under a strong hold throughout by Chris Johnson.

“He’s quite strong and likes to get on with it. It’s important I get him cover and settle him and hold on to him as he can be quite keen, especially fresh,” Cowan said.

“He trialled well, did it easy.

Dad hasn’t said too much yet because he was still undecided if he was going to run him if the track was going to be heavy. But I was talking to Mr [David] Walsh yesterday and he was confident the track would get back to slow.”

Cowan, apprenticed to Hunterville trainer Adrian Bull, has won 14 races, including last month’s Gr.3 Winter Cup at Riccarton aboard Nashville for Bull and his son, training partner and Cowan’s boyfriend, Harry.

“Even if Signify won this weekend, it wouldn’t compare to Nashville’s Winter Cup. That’s my favourite but this would be a close second,” Cowan said.

Cowan will look to add to her four wins at her favourite track on Saturday, suggesting that outside Signify her best chances were Disruption and Standrews Masonic.
