Emotional farewells

With six Ashburton District councillors calling time on their local body careers next month, almost 60 years of knowledge and experience will be missing from the meeting table when the new council convenes after October’s local body election. And with six speeches and responses to be made, the traditional farewell ceremony became a marathon of words – and emotion.
When he paid tribute to his deputy mayor Darryl Nelson, Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay choked up as he farewelled a man he described as having been his dependable rock. “You’ve been a councillor extraordinaire and you’ve been my dependable rock with your advice and clear view,” McKay said. “You’re a team player and a pragmatist with a huge degree of common-sense. You’re no nonsense.” In response, Nelson ticked off a very
long list of projects he said had been achieved during his 21-year stint, but each of those had been achieved by councillors and by staff “who got off their tails and got things done”. He added that the council today was “a better council now than it has ever been over 20 years in terms of staff”.
