Homicide victim named

Police say they are committed to holding those responsible for the death of 29-yearold dairy farm worker Tony Grant Waldron to account as inquiries remain ongoing in to the homicide that occurred near Rakaia last week.

Police officially named the deceased man as Tony Grant Waldron in a media release on Saturday night.

Waldron was found at home with fatal injuries at a Gardiners Road property Wednesday morning.

Despite initial reports suggesting he had received a gunshot wound, Detective Senior Sergeant Richard Quested said this is now not believed to be the case.

“Police are committed to establishing what has happened to Mr Waldron, and holding those responsible to account,” Quested said.

“We would like to reassure the community that we believe this was not a random incident, and there is not thought to be any risk to the public.”

Scene examinations continued at two properties on Gardiners Road over the weekend.

The first was where Waldron was found, and the second was where police executed a search warrant, believed to have been on Thursday afternoon.

One arrest has been made in the process of the homicide investigation, but Quested said that while the arrest came during the course of inquiries, and was not charged in relation to the homicide.

When water guru Dr Terry Heiler first laid eyes on the Rangitata Diversion Race (RDR), he was in awe of the extraordinary vision behind the project.

The retired consulting engineer, considered one of the country’s foremost experts in irrigation, was representing Engineering New Zealand at the unveiling of a new visitor information panel at the RDR intake at Klondyke on Friday.

“This particular piece of land produced nothing during the 1920s, except rabbits and nor’westers, so the RDR was a pretty special thing,” he told the 30 or so gathered on a sunny spring afternoon.

Moving to New Zealand from Australia in the 1960s, Heiler said after his talk that the first thing which struck him about the RDR was how it managed to harness the Rangitata River.

“I thought ‘No dam, what?

No dam?” he said.

The Kiwi solution to the dilemma of accessing water from the gorge at the time had been in the form of a gravel weir, built up from boulders and gravel. Brilliant in its simplicity, it capitalised on the mighty glacier-fed river’s dynamic of variable flows.

In flood events, which can be anything from once per year to once every four years, a hydraulic 30-tonne digger is deployed to the site to once again re-establish the weir.

That was just the start of the amazing engineering feats encompassed within construction of the RDR, as it took water across the Mid Canterbury Plains, supplying farms and even including the feature of power generation.

The engineers of the time had to be admired, Heiler said, with the hydrology of such rivers perhaps poorly understood in those days.

“But these guys got it right,

as proven by 75 years of operation.”

Heiler and RDR Management Limited (RDRML) chairman Richard Wilson officially unveiled the new panel, which accompanies a plaque shifted to the site after initially being installed by Engineering New Zealand nearby in 1990.

Among guest speakers was Environment Canterbury outgoing councillor David Caygill, who was Minister of Finance in 1990.

In his ministerial role he had signed off on the ownership of the RDR, which had been a central government-funded project, transferring it to the user-owned limited liability company RDRML. The company retains ownership today and has the four shareholders of Trustpower, the Ashburton District Council, Ashburton Lyndhurst Irrigation Limited and MHV (Mayfield, Hinds, Valetta) Water.

Engineering New Zealand’s heritage advisor Cindy Jemmett talked about the process behind establishing the new information panel and bringing the plaque to the same site. She added that the RDR was now under consideration for inclusion on Engineering New Zealand’s heritage register, the organisation’s highest level of recognition.

Barrett’s association with the RDR goes back to its foundation years. As a child he lived in public works department camps at Ealing and Winchmore as his father Jim was among workers building the race and preparing land for irrigation. Jim later became the RDR’s first head raceman, in the 1940s.

“It’s just one of the best schemes that was ever invented in New Zealand,” Barrett said.

The best paperhanger in NZ Rodney Eden can quite rightly claim to be the best paperhanger in New Zealand.

It’s not a claim he’s comfortable making, but it’s one he’s now entitled to make after winning the title of New Zealand’s Master Painter of the Year for residential wall coverings.

The McIntosh Commercial Construction painting foreman is still reeling from the win. Entering the master painters awards is not something the company has done previously, but with a job they were all proud of on a new Allenton home, they decided this year might be the year, said busi-

ness manager Tesh McIntosh.

They entered three categories in the awards and came home with three trophies – a highly commended in the commercial section, a gold in painter of the year section, a gold in the wall covering section and the top award, painter of the year in the wall covering category.

There were hundreds of entries in the awards, and the company’s entries were up against the best of New Zealand, McIntosh said.

They knew they were in line for an award, but had no idea at what level, but that was enough

to entice a team from the company to attend the award ceremony, she said.

When they received the highly commended award, Eden said he was rapt and thought that was his lot for the night. He was stunned to find the company’s name called again and again.

“I’ve been on a high all week.

The biggest thing for me is to know that our standard is up there with the best in New Zealand,” Eden said.

As the sole wallpaper hanger in the team of four, he’s taking special pride in knowing that the hours spent matching and hang-

ing five different papers in the property paid off in the form of his award as the country’s number one.

The rest of his team – Jesse Maher, Mike Kelleher and apprentice Harry Jackson, all contributed to the gold for the paint work, he said.

With the big win under their belts, Eden said his team would be inspired to enter the awards again next year.

The painting team spreads its net wide, undertaking private work as well as on the company’s own builds as well as contracts outside Ashburton.

From P1 A man appeared in the Christchurch District Court on Friday morning charged with threatening to kill, possession of ammunition and having possession of a drug utensil relating to cannabis use.

He was granted interim name suppression and was remanded in custody to reappear at the Ashburton District Court on October 14.

Emergency services were called to a Gardiners Road address, east of Rakaia, shortly after 9am on Wednesday morning where they found a 29-year-old man, believed to have been shot, who had died at the scene.

There was a large presence of police in the Rakaia area on Thursday as the Police Forensics Team carried out their investigations, and the Armed Offenders Squad were also present and executed a search warrant.

The property where the 29-year-old man was found is owned by Dairy Holdings Limited who were also his employers.

Dairy Holdings Limited Central Canterbury Farm operations manager Gary McGregor said they were offering all the support they could to those involved.

“We are just trying to support the guys on the farm,” he said on Thursday.

He added that the man had made a valuable input into the farm and was well liked by his colleagues.

“That is a pretty shocking thing if you have never seen a dead body before,” McGregor added.

“He was a good worker, he was fairly new to us, everyone is pretty upset and there is no real obvious reason for why this should have happened.”

“He was well liked by his mates and had two young kids and a partner who he had recently separated from.

“It is pretty worrying with young kids involved.”

Allenton School Fair a success

Great weather and good crowds have left organisers thrilled with this year’s edition of the Allenton School Fair on Saturday.

The fair, which is held on the school grounds by the school’s PTA, is a major fundraiser for the year and this year’s funds will be used to enhance the school grounds around a classroom rebuild scheduled for early 2020.

Co-ordinator Pam Carr said the fair had once again been a success.

“It was amazing, the weather was

nice and hot and the crowds were good,” she said. “A big highlight for the kids was getting to dunk the principal and the MPs (in the dunk tank).”

The fair was opened by skydivers from Skydiving Kiwis, which was a hit with the children, said Carr.

The final numbers are yet to be determined, but Carr said currently they anticipated the event had raised just under $20,000.

“It is a bit down on last year but it is still really good and it was again really well supported by parents, kids and families who had a good time.”

Ashburton firefighters were kept on their toes at the weekend attending a number of small fires in the town.

On Saturday morning at 9.35am they were called to a fire in a brazier that had gotten out of control, and 12 hours later were called to a fire in a rubbish bin in the Ashburton Domain.

Hand freed A person was freed by emergency services yesterday afternoon after they got their hand stuck in a machine at a Burger King in West Auckland. Two fire engines attended the fast-food restaurant at Westgate Shopping Centre, a spokeswoman for Fire and Emergency New Zealand said.

Emergency services were called to the location around 2pm, however, a short time afterwards the person’s hand was freed. The type of machine the person trapped their hand inside was not known.

On top of the Google pile Businesses advertising on the internet are negotiating their way through a virtual wild west, says Chris Mole of Chris Mole Media.

Mole has recently moved back to Ashburton with wife Angela from Christchurch, shifting his successful web marketing business to Somerset House.

The former Ashburton Guardian chief reporter started a web design business in 2004, soon discovering Google Ads as a way to keep at the top of the search-engine giant’s page one.

“It worked so well for the web design business, it pretty much doubled the business in the first six months,” Mole said.

“I realised how effective it was.”

He soon found some of his web design customers were asking him if he could do the same for them.

“It just grew and grew, to the point I realised there was a lot of opportunity there,” he said.

In 2016 he sold his web design business, and today his main focus is helping businesses with Google Ads. He has about 50 clients based in Canterbury and throughout New Zealand.

“It’s a bit of a wild west,” he said of the internet advertising business in general, giving the example of agencies charging small

A bomb squad was called in to the scene of a car crash in Wellington yesterday afternoon, after a driver fled the scene, leaving an “item of concern” in his abandoned car. A New Zealand Defence Force spokeswoman confirmed the explosive ordnance disposal team was called in by police to the scene in Newtown, where an object was secured without incident. The person who fled the area after the two-vehicle crash on Hutchison Road was seen leaving in a third vehicle, thought to be a white truck or ute. The crash happened about 12.15pm, leaving the remaining driver with minor injuries.

Station inferno A witness has described hearing a “popping” sound at the Hastings Railway Station moments before she watched it go up in flames early on Saturday. First reported to Fire Emergency NZ at 2.02am, the fire gutted the old railway station.

Chelsea Barham, who works across the road from the station, said she was leaving work around 2am when she heard the popping sound and saw smoke. She said she called 111 and watched the fire until it was almost put out, around 3-3.30am.

Peters takes Spark to task NZME Acting Prime Minister Winston Peters says Spark’s streaming of Saturday night’s World Cup match between the All Blacks and South Africa was an “abject disaster”.

And he has vowed that the Government will get to the bottom of the issue.

“I can assure you we will find out as fast as possible as to what on earth is not going on,” he said yesterday.

His comments come after Spark announced it would simulcast yesterday’s Rugby World Cup games free to air on TVNZ after

glitches with its streaming service during Saturday night’s key All Blacks game.

They also said customers unhappy with Saturday’s service can request refunds.

Spark’s video streaming service cut out for some fans during the match, with images of the game flickering, pixelating, blurring and buffering, or losing signal altogether.

Peters – who was forced to watch much of the game on his phone as the stream on his TV was interrupted – said Spark should have been better prepared for the event.

“They [Spark] were told to get ready and we hoped that they would be ready and they promised us that they would be and they’re not.

“It’s not satisfactory.”

Asked if the Government was in contact with Spark over the issue, Peters said Spark was probably “beleaguered with all sorts of phone calls at the moment”.

“I didn’t want to wait around for a couple of hours like everyone else.”

He said the Government was doing all it could to figure out what did, or did not, happen on Saturday night.

But earlier yesterday, Broadcasting Minister Kris Faafoi said the Government would “leave it to Spark to answer the concerns”.

“We are happy there was the contingency with TVNZ’s Duke channel and that it kicked in for viewers when Spark Sport identified issues.

“We will let Spark go through their technical process before we make any further comment but it is obvious that with an event like this, Kiwis expect better delivery than last night.”

As this stage, he said Spark Sport had confirmed it was a problem from the US-based com-

pany which was providing the livestream into New Zealand and not any issue with Spark Sport’s platform.

Peters also told Newstalk there should be, what he called, a “happy balance” where the state steps in and makes major sporting events free to air as is the case in other countries like the UK and Australia.

He said when it comes to the key games – such as the quarter, semi and the final stages – all those games would be free to air.

“For the first time, you’re going to see them without cost, live in New Zealand.”

■■RIVER QUALITY

Why NZ’s rivers are still in a worrying state NZME New Zealand’s rivers remain in a worrying state, with new data showing how levels of harmful E. Coli and nitrogen have been worsening over the past decade.

Multi-agency monitoring programme Land, Air, Water Aotearoa, or LAWA, yesterday released updated water quality results for more than 1400 sites across the country, under nine different indicators, from between 2009 and 2018.

When measuring E.coli – the notorious bacteria linked to animal or human faeces that can leave swimmers suffering vomiting, cramping, nausea and diarrhoea – around 45 per cent of sites had been either “likely” or “very likely” degrading, while at another 21 per cent of sites, results weren’t clear.

The picture for total nitrogen (TN) – a key nutrient linked to fertiliser, farm run-off and industrial waste that can fuel algae growth in rivers, leading to lowered light and oxygen that hurts species – were also dismal.

New water quality results show the country’s rivers remain in a worrying state.

About half of river sites showed worsening trends, while there wasn’t enough data at 17 per cent of sites to say either way.

Under another critical measure of a river’s ecological health, called the Macroinvertebrate Community Index or MCI, only a quarter of sites were improving.

Freshwater ecologist Dr Roger Young, of the collaborative programme’s lead agency, the Cawthron Institute, said while there were more encouraging signs for other indicators like water clarity, ammonia, and phosphorus, the results for E. Coli, TN and MCI were “concerning”.

“The mixed national picture suggests New Zealand has some way to go before meeting our aspirations to maintain or improve river water quality.”

LAWA’s river water quality lead Dr Tim Davie said while the national picture provided some interesting signals of changes, more could be learned by looking at the state of rivers at a catchment level.

“Site level information on LAWA is now richer than ever, because with today’s update we’ve widened our offering to show 15-year trends where enough data are available,” Davie said.

“This gives a longer-term view of changes to local water quality and for some locations represents up to 180 monthly sampling visits by a water quality technician.”

Previous reports have shown how levels of E. Coli were 22 times higher in waterways in towns and cities than in the relatively unspoiled waterways that flow through our native wilderness.

river length. The latest Government stocktake also showed that between 1994 and 2013 – a period that saw an explosion in cow numbers amid dairy’s white gold rush – levels of nitrate-nitrogen in monitored rivers were getting worse (55 per cent) at more sites than were improving (28 per cent).

This month, the Government unveiled a package of proposed reforms to help turn the picture around.

They include new environmental standards that would effectively put the brakes on further intensification of dairy farms; a requirement for farmers to have “farm plans” by 2025 and more stringent rules around fencing and nitrogen loss, with some catchments facing having to cut rates by as much as 80 per cent over the next few years.

Local councils would have to put the health and wellbeing of water first in decision-making, adopt tougher rules for wastewater discharges, use more monitoring indicators, and ensure swimming spots were at higher standards over summer.

Four die in bus crash AP Four people have died after a tour bus carrying them and other visitors from China crashed, rolling onto a guard rail and leaving carnage and debris in its wake on a highway running through the red-rock landscape of southern Utah.

To Robert Driedonks, who heard the crash from the wildlife museum he owns nearby, it sounded like “a bomb going off”. He ran to the scene at the weekend, rushing to check pulses and help the terrified people as best he could, though they couldn’t understand his words.

“All I could do is see which people needed helped help the most,” he said yesterday. One devastated man was cradling his dead wife, and Driedonks wrapped his arms around them both, trying to bring him a little comfort until paramedics arrived.

All 31 people on board were hurt, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Nick Street said.

Twelve remained hospitalised yesterday, five of them critical.

Most were in St George, where local Mandarin speakers were gathering to translate as well as find clothes and shoes for the people left with nothing when the crash threw their suitcases into the desert, said De He, a school district administrator co-ordinating the effort.

Oktoberfest under way

As is common in tour buses, not everyone was wearing a seatbelt when the bus from a tour company based in Southern California rolled, crushing its roof and ramming the guard rail’s vertical posts into the cab, Street said.

Five passengers remained in critical condition, and the death toll could rise, he said.

The crash happened near a highway rest stop a few miles from southern Utah’s Bryce Canyon National Park, an other-

worldly landscape of narrow red-rock spires. The top of the white bus could be seen smashed inward and one side was peeling away as the vehicle came to rest mostly off the side of the road against a sign for restrooms.

Authorities believe the driver swerved on the way to the park, but when he yanked the steering wheel to put the bus back onto the road the momentum sent the bus into a rollover crash.

The driver, an American citizen, survived and was talking with investigators, Street said.

Greek police make arrest in 1985 hijacking AP Greek police said yesterday they have arrested a suspect in the 1985 hijacking of a flight from Athens that became a multi-day ordeal and included the slaying of an American.

Police said a 65-year-old suspect in the hijacking was arrested on the island of Mykonos in response to a warrant from Germany.

Lt. Col. Theodoros Chronopoulos, a police spokesman, said the hijacking case involved TWA Flight 847. The flight was commandeered by hijackers shortly after taking off from Athens on June 14, 1985. It

originated in Cairo and had San Diego set as a final destination, with stops scheduled in Athens, Rome, Boston and Los Angeles.

The hijackers shot and killed US Navy diver Robert Stethem, 23, after beating him unconscious. They released the other 146 passengers and crew members on the plane during an ordeal that included stops in Beirut and Algiers. The last hostage was freed after 17 days.

The suspect was in custody yesterday on the Greek island of Syros but was set to be transferred to the Korydallos high security prison in Athens for extradition proceedings, a police spokeswoman said. She said the suspect was a Lebanese citizen. The

spokeswoman spoke on condition of anonymity because the case was ongoing. Police refused to release the suspect’s name.

In Beirut, the Foreign Ministry said the man detained in Greece is a Lebanese journalist called Mohammed Saleh, and that a Lebanese embassy official planned to try to visit him.

However, several Greek media outlets identified the detainee as Mohammed Ali Hammadi, who was arrested in Frankfurt in 1987 and convicted in Germany for the plane hijacking and Stethem’s slaying.

Hammadi, an alleged Hezbollah member, was sentenced to life in prison but was paroled in 2005 and returned to Lebanon.

Miley and Kaitlynn split Miley Cyrus and Kaitlynn Carter have reportedly broken up, just weeks after going public with their relationship. But the Wrecking Ball singer, 26, will remain friends with her 31-year-old reality TV star ex, a source told People. “Miley and Kaitlynn broke up,” the source said.

“They’re still friends.” The source said the couple connected after Cyrus split with Liam Hemsworth after one year of marriage, and Carter broke up with her partner of six years, Brody Jenner. Cyrus and Carter first went public with their relationship in August, when pictures emerged online showing them kissing on a trip in Lake Como, Italy — one day after the Wrecking Ball singer announced her shock split with Hemsworth.

Art awards beckon for painter

Hakatere painter Rhonye McIlroy is thrilled to have been selected recently as a finalist in two prestigious art awards.

Living by the seaside with husband Simon and the three youngest of their four children, McIlroy spends many hours each day in her studio.

“It’s been really, really busy, but I’m lucky, I just love doing what I’m doing,” she said.

She said she had been “absolutely thrilled” with the latest development in her career, of having a painting selected for the Arts Gold Awards in Alexandra and three selected for the Tasman National Art Awards.

It was McIlroy’s background in fashion design in Europe and travelling the world for 10 years which led to a passion for painting.

Leaving her home town Greymouth in 1987 at the age of 16, McIlroy arrived in Scotland where she stayed for a year before moving to London, from where her extensive travels began.

She gained diplomas in fashion design and fashion merchandising while based in Europe and Asia, but also found herself spending a lot of her time in art galleries and museums.

Inspired by the great works in and around these institutions, her first paintings were

based on Roman-Greek structures and statues, later evolving into erotica and surrealism.

Primarily acrylic on board, much of her recent work is focused on early contact between Maori and European peoples. A love of fashion, especially the top hat, has become her trademark in many paintings since 2011, which detail aspects of early New Zealand colonial history.

It began with a series of finely detailed work of Captain James Cook and his voyages from 1768 to 1779, following through to Pakeha who lived as Maori, intermarrying and adopting many of their ways.

Current works explore McIlroy’s ancestors of the Guard family, John and Elizabeth Guard. They were themselves identities in early settler history, in 1834 surviving being shipwrecked and captured by Maori in what is historically referred to as The Harriet Affair.

Meanwhile, making the art awards’ finals comes hot on the heels of planning for the Adam Portraiture Award next year.

McIlroy is painting All Black legend Sir Michael Jones for the award in February. McIlroy was able to ask Jones if he would be her subject following being commissioned to do a painting of Sir Michael for a Mid Canterbury Rugby Union auction evening at Hotel Ashburton last year.

Spark’s risk doesn’t pay off R

isks are a part of everyday life, sometimes they work out, sometimes they don’t, and in this case for Spark, the risk they took on delivering New Zealand’s favourite sporting event to the public was a risk that never should have been taken.

Spark were forced to simulcast the All Blacks v South Africa Rugby World Cup game on Duke on Saturday evening due to streaming issues, and have done the same for all of Sunday’s games and will offer refunds for those who want them.

Unfortunately for Spark they promised to deliver the Rugby World Cup to kiwi homes without any issues, but it now appears their confidence and trust in their

systems was incredibly misplaced. There is an element of respect that could be given to Spark for willing to take the plunge in to the sports streaming market, but it never should have been done with such a significant event.

Many people are happy to gripe about Sky Sport and their overpriced packages, but they are the

masters of delivering sporting events to New Zealand and have taken a slow measured approach to streaming here, knowing full well the country is not ready.

They will be sitting back, lapping up the schadenfreude from Spark’s failure, knowing people will be crying out (just like in this piece) saying the games should just be shown on regular old television.

I don’t sit down to watch regular television myself, doing most of my viewing through a computer or iPad, and I haven’t had too many issues with Spark Sport, but realise how much easier it is to just have the games shown on television.

either decided they weren’t going to bother with Spark Sport as it was going to be too difficult and much easier to watch the games down at the pub, or they had to spend an afternoon on the phone seeking technical support to allow them to access the service.

There are also a huge number of people who do not currently have the internet speeds to support watching the streams either.

One day we will live in a world where everything is streamed to our phones, but New Zealand is still a wee way off that point.

Spark has gambled massively on this working, and at the moment it looks like it will be a losing bet.

They may be able to get the

streams improved from the All Blacks vs South Africa game as it was apparently an issue with their international streaming partners, but that still doesn’t solve a lot of the problems.

The have picked the highest point to start from when it comes to streaming sports in New Zealand, and unfortunately that means they have the longest distance to fall to the bottom.

Should they have started out by trying to get the rights to a competition like the Mitre 10 Cup so they could prove they can do it first?

Hindsight might make that the obvious choice, but we are here now and just have to deal with what we have got in front of us.

Two years of ups and downs T

oday marks two years since the last general election.

With a comparatively short electoral term of three years, in just a few short months you can expect politicians of all political persuasions ramping up their efforts to gain your support.

The past two years as your local MP have been truly humbling.

It’s a great privilege to serve you in Parliament, and a responsibility I will never take lightly.

I’ve seen Ashburton at its best.

A welcoming and open district, always willing to offer a helping hand to long-time locals and newcomers alike. But we have had our challenges.

Soon after the election our district had its first confirmed case of Mycoplasma bovis. Since then we’ve had dozens more, with Mid Canterbury bearing the brunt of the disease.

One in five of the more than 100,000 cattle culled nationally have been in the Ashburton district.

I’ve had countless tear-filled conversations with farmers working to get them the compensation they’re owed by the

Fully grown blokes, the most stoic you’d ever imagine, breaking down over the loss of their animals through no fault of their own.

If there’s any positive, it’s that it has shone a light on another problem that is all too often not spoken about.

Despite that romanticised “Southern Man” persona, many blokes in areas like ours do have challenges with mental health.

Left unchecked, it contributes to rural communities having a higher suicide rate than urban centres.

In 2016/17 606 New Zealanders took their own lives. Just two years later, in 2018/19, that number has increased to 685.

The previous National Government invested an additional

$100 million to look at new ways of combatting suicide, and I’m pleased that the current Government have added to that with more funding for frontline mental health services.

I’ve always said that I’ll acknowledge the Government when they get something right, and suicide prevention is something that should be far beyond politics.

But in other areas they’re not helping.

The road between Ashburton and Christchurch is the second most dangerous stretch of highway in the country for fatalities and serious injuries, and yet they’ve scrapped plans to upgrade it to four lanes to make it safer as has been done in Tauranga and the Waikato (now two of the safest roads in New Zealand).

On top of that, $5 billion has been taken from the state highway budget to spend on Auckland rail and cycle projects.

It means there’s less money available in regions like ours for other important upgrades and maintenance.

And now we have water re-

forms, with proposals from Government which some scientists have labelled as unattainable.

I’m open to the debate, but in releasing their plans the Government have refused to release any economic modelling of the impact of the proposed nitrogen limits on our primary sector and towns like Ashburton.

At one of the public meetings recently I asked Environment Ministry officials why they won’t release the details as part of the 8 week public consultation so we can have an informed debate.

Their response is that they don’t have time to do it within the consultation process, dictated by Ministers who want it done this year.

Ministers, presumably, who are conscious they’ll be asking for your vote in just a few short months.

YOUR VIEW Chertsey Hall Re Sue Newman’s report on a council meeting in last Mondays Guardian.

I was surprised to read that the council was considering raising a red flag over the Chertsey Hall claiming it had little income over the past year.

I have been involved on the Chertsey Hall committee for

more years than I can remember, and like many halls they are not used near as much as they were 20 or 30 years ago, but our hall income has always exceed general expenditure.

Maintenance we have to fundraise for, and have also received a grant from the council to help with this.

In the past three years over $14,000 has been spent keeping

the hall to its present standard.

Outside woodwork has been stripped and painted, inside woodwork around the windows and front of the stage also has been stripped and painted. Seating has been stripped and re-varnished.

Curtains have been replaced with blinds thanks to a fundraising effort by an interested party and the generosity of the commu-

nity. Our committee is a small one and is a mixture of ones who have been there for many years, and of newcomers to the district and this is working well.

Hall hire over the past three years has been over $5000 and is used regularly, so I fail to understand why the council is considering raising a red flag over this venue.

This central square is bordered by the incredibly refined Cusco Cathedral, completed in 1654 in an attempt at eradicating Incan religious beliefs, as well as the exquisitely complex Church de La Compania de Jesus.

This is the preparatory hub for the hike you’re about to embark on, and a day of relaxation is in order. Sip on freshly roasted coffee at the free Museo del Cafe, visit local markets or merely appreciate the vibrant culture of the Imperial City.

By day three, you’ll be meandering on country roads through the thriving native wilderness of the Sacred Valley. Running from Pisac to the small town of Ollantaytambo, this vital stretch of land is blessed by Pachamama (mother nature) with bountiful soils and an abundance of water from the Urubamba River. One of the Andes’ largest reserves of agricultural diversity, the Sacred Valley provides staple crops including over 4000 varieties of potato, quinoa and maize.

It’s now day four, and you’re about to commence what is arguably the highlight of the trip — an epic multi-day hike through the Andes. Hiking across the world’s most extended continental mountain range is already a triumph in itself. But regardless of whether you choose the iconic Inca trail or the equally as rewarding Lares trek, staying hydrated is essential if you want to make it to the summit.

Knowledgeable and friendly native guides guarantee an authentic and enlightening occasion, while exceptional chefs prepare wholesome three-course meals every day. Where camping is concerned, you’ll be pampered head-to-toe. Staff members and mules carry your belongings, so be polite and pack lightly, and tents are set up for you. Arise to a hot cup of coca-leaf tea — the perfect start to a chilly morning in the Andes. Both hikes offer incredible yet contrasting landscapes.

The Inca trail is 39km across high Andean plains wending through a web of ancient In-

can settlements. To walk in the footsteps of the Incas should be on the bucket list for any history buff. Encounter ruins such as the Runkuraqay — thought to be a place of rest and worship — as well as remnants of the enchanting Sayagmarka complex, perched on a mountain edge.

With a multitude of ascents and descents, the Inca Trail is a leg-burner. The dreaded stair climb up to the summit of the Dead Woman’s Pass, 4200m above sea level, is not for the faint-hearted. But the second you walk through the Sun Gate and catch your first glimpse of the heart-stopping Machu Picchu, it’ll be worth every rigorous moment. Planning is essential for this trip. Ensure you book at least six months in advance as there are limited daily trekking permits.

In contrast, the Lares Trek takes the road less travelled and is more a living experience of Peru. The trek passes through farms and villages of the Quechuan natives.

As they generally only speak their mother tongue, your Spanish skills won’t help you here, but smiles and gifts always go a long way. As you ascend on a much more mild incline than the Inca trail, the beauty of this place only intensifies. But the high altitude means it’s still no walk in the park.

While the Lares trek has few Inca ruins, you’ll be blown away by the calming balance of isolation and civilisation. Children play on the hillside and llamas and alpacas graze by glacial streams. At the 4800m summit, bask in your success and enjoy extraordinary views of turquoise lagoons and deep valleys. After the 36km hike you’ll spend a cosy night in Aguas Calientes, before receiving the ultimate reward of

watching sunrise over one of the Seven Wonders of the World — Machu Picchu.

With a day to unwind in Cusco, opt for a hike up Rainbow Mountain or rest and restore for the coming days’ adventures. My suggestion is to play it by ear — don’t pre-book, you’ll likely be too shattered from the previous days’ slog.

Conclude your trip with a two-night immersion in Peruvian Amazonia. Cruise along the Tambopata river and admire red-andgreen macaw soaring in the skies above, while the black caiman sunbathes, camouflaged, along the riverbank. In the luxury ecolodge, spend your day relaxing in a hammock with your favourite book or relish bonding time with your tour group.

With zero cellphone service, no Wi-Fi and limited electricity, take time to slow down because by nightfall, rush-hour in the jungle begins. That is when you can locate the lurking creatures, from bird-eating tarantulas, to owls, to deadly snakes and frogs awaiting their prey. You’ll learn about the area’s diverse flora and fauna and the extensive use of materials for infrastructure, medicinal and hunting purposes.

At daybreak, you’ll journey deep into the rainforest on a guided excursion. A tribe of squirrel monkeys migrate through the canopy overhead, and leaf-cutter ants use their impressive carrying ability on the forest floor below.

Finally, with luck, a cunning anaconda or a giant otter will make an appearance in the Oxbow Lake.

Home to over one-third of the Earth’s documented animal species, the Amazon rainforest is a tropical utopia sure to bring out your wild side.

Vianna returns to the top

After a year’s absence, Flavio Vianna and Julia Grant returned to the Peak to Pub multisport race on Saturday and made their presence well and truly known.

Vianna was the first man to cross the finish line in the 20th installment of the epic race which takes competitors from the top of Mt Hutt Ski Area to the Methven township, while Grant won the women’s event.

Both went into the 2019 event as past champions, with their last titles having come in 2017, but both were unable to race last year as they were on their way home after competing in China.

That threw the 2018 event wide open, with Ben Oliver claiming the men’s title and Freyja Atkinson the women’s title, and while Oliver was back for another shot this year, Atkinson wasn’t.

The race was made up of a 2km ski, an 18km mountain bike ride down the access road, and a 12km run into Methven, and for the second year running Oliver – a Rangiora-based New Zealand mountain biking representative – produced another lightning quick mountain bike leg down the Mt Hutt access road to be in contention early.

He was the only entrant to make it to the bottom of the access road in less than 20 minutes, but he had to settle for fourth place overall this time around though, with his finish time more than five minutes slower than his winning time last year, and three minutes back on winner Vianna.

Vianna finished in the slick time of 1.15.26 hours, crossing the finish line a full minute and a half clear of his nearest rival.

For the second year running, Steve Melton had to settle for second, while Luca Killick was another 30 seconds behind in third.

Grant also ran away with the title on what was a bluebird day

on the mountain, and an ideal day for racing, winning in 1.28.08 hours.

She finished more than two minutes clear of the second placed woman, Caroline Higgins, while Katherine Reardon was third.

Teams also tackled the race, and the team dubbed Lads of Further Faster took out the men’s team title in a time of 1.13.50 hours, with

Cool Runnings third and Could Be On Here finishing third.

The top women’s team was On Your Left, with a time of 1.39.14

hours, while the mixed team title went the way of the Big River Builders team in a time of 1.25.41 hours.

Duncan overcomes the odds to be world champion NZME After three years of anguish, Courtney Duncan arrived back in New Zealand this week as the 2019 women’s motocross world champion.

It has taken some incredible inner fortitude to keep heading back to Europe year after year to compete for the title after coming

close at least twice before.

Over this season, Duncan clinched her first world title with a race to spare at the Grand Prix of Turkey.

So dominant was Duncan that she won nine of the 10 races in the championship.

The Kiwi, 23, had been hit with dramas since she joined the world championship series in 2016. In

each of the past three seasons, she had been the dominant rider, frequently leading the championship before being beset by crashes and/or injury.

In her first year, the Otago rider was leading the championship when a photographer taking pictures in a landing zone was hit by her in a season-ending crash.

In 2017, while well on track to

win the title, Duncan swerved to miss a bunch of fallen riders only to smash into a fence and could finish only sixth, thus missing the title by a mere handful of points.

Last year, a foot injury ended her tilt at the world title, causing her to miss the final two rounds while holding a 21-point advantage.

“It is so good to be returning

to New Zealand for a change as world champion and being healthy, which is a really big accomplishment for me,” Duncan said.

“The expectations [of winning the world title] have been there for so long and for sure it’s great to finally get it done in my fourth season and getting that weight off my shoulders.”

Full steam ahead for the Oilers

A week after winning their first ever game, the Chertsey Oilers have beaten the Ashburton Barbarians to become the first team to get their name on the new Mid Canterbury Shield.

Their 36-20 win in the second round of Aoraki Rugby League’s Duncan McGregor Memorial Trophy competition on Saturday capped off a big day of rugby league at the Rakaia Domain, and ensured that heading into the final round the Oilers are one of the competition favourites.

It was a big day for the Oilers all around.

It was their turn to host one of the competition’s double-headers, and they did so at the Rakaia Domain – the first time compe-

tition league had been played in Rakaia for 70 years.

The Country Cowboys kicked things off with a massive 78-24 win over the Timaru Outlaws, to win the newly established South Canterbury Shield, before the new Mid Canterbury Shield went on the line in the game between the competition’s two Mid Canterbury teams.

Formed just three years ago, the Oilers were the competition’s newest side, and after a couple of building years they look to have finally found their feet.

Their win over the Timaru Outlaws in round one’s double-header in Geraldine was their first ever win as a club, and they followed that up with their first ever win against the Barbarians.

And they did it reasonably con-

vincingly, scoring the opening try early before a Leps Seitava double put them out to an 18-0 lead.

At half-time the Oilers were up 24-4, and while the Barbarians came back at them in the second half, the Oilers seemed to have an answer for everything.

Oilers coach Reuben Browne said his side’s attitude was the difference.

They were focused on the job at hand, and got it done.

“Everyone was running as part of a machine. Everyone played their role, but it was the attitude that the boys had that counted,” Browne said.

“We are capable of taking this competition out, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we did it.”

Past Barbarian, now Oiler, Marvin Brown played a huge role

in his side’s win.

“He was running our lines perfectly. Our back line was on point and our forwards were on point,” Browne said.

Ashburton Barbarians coach Steve Gamble said the Oilers were just too slick.

“I don’t think we had any answers,” Gamble said.

But, his side was still growing.

The Barbarians side for the Aoraki competition was very different from the one that took to the field in the Canterbury Rugby League division one competition this year, and they’d had little time together.

“Once again we had four, maybe five of our original Barbarians team and for the rest it was their first time playing together,” Gamble said.

“I think our boys played alright.

“They played with a bit more confidence and I think, by next week, they will come right.”

If the Barbarians beat the Timaru Outlaws in this weekend’s next double header in Timaru, they’ll make the semi-finals, and play whoever finishes second out of the Chertsey Oilers and the Country Cowboys.

If the Oilers go on to win, who finishes on top and goes straight through to the competition final is likely to come down to for and against, as they are behind the Cowboys on the leaderboard, despite both having won their first two games.

The Oilers were deducted their competition points from round one due to fielding an ineligible player.

Smith sin-binning can’t stop rampant Melbourne Storm NZME The Melbourne Storm have absolutely schooled the Parramatta Eels with a crushing 32-0 win at AAMI Park to book yet another preliminary final berth against the Sydney Roosters.

It was an unlikely match-up and the Storm proved they were a class above to run away with a

dominant victory over the overawed Eels.

The Eels, the 2018 wooden spooners, went from 58 points to zero in the finals as they never got into the match, outplayed from the opening kickoff.

A huge moment came when Cameron Smith was sin-binned just before half-time, the second time in his 412-game career he’s

been sent from the field.

While it could have been a turning point, the Eels couldn’t make the Storm pay without their leader.

It came after he was held down

by Eels hooker Reed Mahoney and reacted, lashing out and connecting with two slaps.

Smith spoke on Channel 9 after the game and said it was the right

call “as long as it’s consistent”.

“He just wouldn’t let me go and I was just trying get his grip off my jersey and I couldn’t so that was unfortunate,” Smith said.

“I spoke to him a halftime, a little exchange in the tunnel and he had a little wry smile and said ‘got you there’, so 1-nil to Reedy but just happy with coming back on and how the boys responded

for that 10 minutes, it was a really crucial 10 minutes. I was really disappointed with myself and that I reacted that way and left the side vulnerable with 12 men.”

There was plenty of debate over the sin bin.

Andrew Voss said “an absolute brain explosion here in the semi final with a referee not metres away, centimetres away”.

ABs stamp their authority AP New Zealand straightened the world champion crown on their head and removed any doubt about their status as Rugby World Cup favourite as it overcame South Africa 23-13 on Saturday night in the tournament’s most anticipated pool game.

A resurgent South Africa drew with the All Blacks on their home turf in July and stripped them of the Rugby Championship to make many think the New Zealanders had been finally brought back to the field.

They also lost the No. 1 ranking they’d held for a decade, but that’s coming back to them after this win that showed off their ruthlessness and depth of skills.

After a cagey start, the All Blacks unlocked the scoreboard by exploiting Springboks errors for 17 points in six minutes to lead 17-3 at halftime.

They then let South Africa back in with a soft try, and the Springboks closed within four points with a quarter to go.

But the All Blacks re-imposed control up front, if not on South Africa wisp Cheslin Kolbe, and two late penalties secured the victory to open their account in a bid

for a third successive World Cup title.

“The defence of both sides was very staunch and you just had to take what you were given,” New Zealand coach Steve Hansen said.

His side was stifled by South Africa’s blitz defence for more than a quarter, but pounced on the Springboks’ errors in possession.

A loose pass by scrumhalf Faf de Klerk was hacked on by New Zealand flyhalf Richie Mo’unga, who regathered and was caught in front of the posts by South Africa wing Makazole Mpimpi.

South Africa was penalised and Mo’unga kicked the first points for New Zealand, which appeared to energise the side.

A Duane Vermuelen knock on led to a Mo’unga cross-chip to unmarked wing Sevu Reece.

He led a surge down the right touch line with support from Aaron Smith and Ardie Savea.

Winger George Bridge then directed Beauden Barrett to take a half gap and Bridge was beside the fullback to take the offload and score.

Springboks flyhalf Handre Pollard then spilled another up-andunder and referee Jerome Garces played advantage.

received the ball squeezed in beside the left touch, turned inside, and cut past three defenders and slipped a fourth.

He drew the last man and lock Scott Barrett loped to the posts.

Mo’unga converted both tries and the double strike in three minutes took the sting out of South Africa.

Even Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus was impressed.

“Sometimes when you play New Zealand you don’t lose turnovers because you don’t have as much ball,” Erasmus said.

“The few times we played with the ball they scored two tries from our turnovers and we weren’t organized in defence.

“They were potent, that shows their class. New Zealand deserved to win even with tries from turnovers.”

The All Blacks were paying the Springboks in kind by making more than 90 per cent of their tackles until seven minutes into the new half.

A routine ruck set up by lock Eben Etzebeth wasn’t covered, amazingly, at its most exposed point – the middle. Flanker Pieter-Steph du Toit accepted the gap, stepped over Etzebeth, and ran untouched for a dive beside the posts.

Pollard’s conversion closed the gap to seven points, and then four with a sweet dropped goal.

Kolbe, the smallest starter on the field, was just barely contained as he made three searing breaks on the right wing before cramp slowed him.

But the effort to play catchup, and take risks that conceded nine penalties, played into the All Blacks’ hands.

Also, fresh legs helped New Zealand regain momentum, giving Mo’unga and Beauden Barrett late penalty kicks to put the score out of reach, and retain their perfect record in pool play, now 29-0 over the tournament’s 32-year history.

“People forget that as well as New Zealand attack, they defend as well,” Erasmus said.

“The moment they get scoreboard pressure on you, they really make it tough.

“They pile pressure on you. But enough about them, we’ve got a hell of a lot of work to do.”

New Zealand next plays in 11 days against Canada in Oita.

Meanwhile, the heated debate in New Zealand rugby about playing Richie Mo’unga at flyhalf instead of Beauden Barrett, and Barrett at fullback instead of Ben Smith, might cool down now.

The dual playmakers model, making a fourth appearance, was a hit for the All Blacks in Yokohama.

Barrett was even named man of the match.

Barrett and Mo’unga played together for the first time in July against South Africa. The error-filled game didn’t allow each other’s skills to flourish and the result was a draw.

The experiment continued through the Bledisloe Cup – a loss and a win – without being convincing.

But coach Steve Hansen saw enough to persist, and rolled them out against South Africa again on Saturday. Both were brilliant.

Their positioning was expert, seeming to know what the Springboks were going to do next.

They swapped at times, as Barrett played first receiver and Mo’unga covered the backfield.

Mo’unga had to make some key tackles.

“I love playing with Richie, he’s a super talent,” Barrett said.

“Hopefully for this team we can figure out how to get the best out of each other and do what’s best for this team. We’ve got a lot more potential in us. It’s only going to get better.”

Hammers’ hopes take a hit

Mid Canterbury’s finals hopes took a massive hit in Gisborne on Saturday, with their 52-38 loss to Poverty Bay dropping them to second-to-last on rugby’s Heartland Championship leaderboard.

It means that with just three rounds to go, Mid Canterbury now face a daunting uphill battle if they’re to make either the Meads Cup (top four) or Lochore Cup (fifth to eighth) finals.

They’d headed to Gisborne full of hope and confidence in their ability, and once again the Dale Palmer and Jason Rickard coached side showed that they were more than capable of scoring points.

But they were also found wanting on defence again, letting a first-half lead slip, not for the first time this season.

Mid Canterbury led Poverty Bay 24-19 at half time, but there were some worrying signs already there, and Poverty Bay eventually ran away with it in the second half.

Palmer said some stern words were said at half-time, because although they were dominating at the set piece, Mid Canterbury had gone away from their structures.

“It’s pretty tough to be honest.

“We wanted to come up here and have a different result, and it’s pretty hard to swallow not having that result,” Palmer said.

Mid Canterbury had been their own worst enemy at times this season, letting sides back into encounters.

“This was probably our worst game.

“At least with the West Coast game we were within two.

“With this one it was 52 points, and it’s not good enough. We just leaked too many points,” Palmer said.

Three of Poverty Bay’s tries were opportunistic, including two intercept tries to Poverty Bay fullback Andrew Tauatevalu, but Palmer said Mid Canterbury put themselves in those positions.

Mid Canterbury scored tries to Josh McAtamney, Jon Dampney, Will Mackenzie and replacement prop Matt Groom, to ensure they at least got a bonus point out of the game, and in such a tight competition that could come in handy at the business end.

But Palmer and his team were under no illusions whatsoever, with three tough teams awaiting them – Thames Valley, North Otago and Wairarapa Bush – in the final three rounds, but he said his side would continue to fight and play with pride.

After five rounds just eight points separated all bar one team in this year’s competition, and there are no unbeaten teams remaining, following West Coast’s 18-17 win over North Otago on Saturday.

Those two teams, and South Canterbury, are now joint in a three-way tie for the lead at the top of the leaderboard on 18 points, with South Canterbury picking up a 38-27 win over Buller on Saturday.

Mid Canterbury’s next opposition, Thames Valley, moved to fourth after their 29-23 win over Wairarapa Bush, with Buller in fifth followed by Wairarapa Bush and Wanganui, who romped home against East Coast 67-24 on Saturday.

Poverty Bay occupy eighth spot, while King Country are ninth despite their 35-19 loss to 10th placed Horowhenua-Kapiti on Saturday.

That leaves Mid Canterbury 11th on 10 points, with only East Coast below them, with just a solitary bonus point to their name.

Meanwhile, the celebrations would have been long and loud in Invercargill as Southland snapped a 27-game losing run, lasting nearly three years.

The Stags notched up their first Mitre 10 Cup win since October 8, 2016, and they did it in style, crushing Counties Manukau 4214 on Saturday in Invercargill.

Southland coach Dave Hewett said it was particularly pleasing for a number of players in the group who had never won in the maroon and gold jersey.

It had been 1078 days since Southland last celebrated a win and for many in the Stags’ squad it was their first win in top-level provincial rugby.

Southland had very nearly ended their losing streak seven days previously, having led Manawatu 26-7 at halftime, but getting run down in the second half and losing 3126.

Hewett said the players were determined to avoid any repeat of the Manawatu disaster.

Three minutes into the second half, hooker Greg Pleasants-Tate crashed over from a driving maul, and from that moment on, the second half was all Southland.

“I guess the main [feeling] is pride really in that the boys executed the game plan we were asking and we did it for 80 minutes, Hewett said.

Kyrgios put off by ‘hot chick’ NZME

First bowls rolled Sending the first bowl of the season rolling down the green at the Hampstead Bowling Club on Saturday was Gladys McCosker. The Hampstead Bowling Club was one of four local bowling clubs to hold their opening days on Saturday, along with the Rakaia, Ashburton and Ashburton MSA clubs. All bar one local bowling club was now open for business this season, with the Hinds Bowling Club set to be the last to open, on October 5.

Nick Kyrgios has been caught blaming his loss at the Laver Cup yesterday on a female fan that caught his eye in the crowd.

Throughout the year the mercurial Aussie has gone to the crowd for advice on serves as well as enjoying banter with the paying fans.

On more than one occasion his interactions with the crowd have seen the Aussie blow up, but his latest run in was one never seen before – and one which has received a mixed reaction.

Going up against Roger Federer on day two in Switzerland, Kyrgios was on top after claiming the opening set 7-6 before the two men were on serve to start the second set at 1-1.

Unfortunately it was in the third game of the set when Kyrgios lost his way and as he made his way back to the bench he explained to his team-mates what caused the spiral.

“I lost concentration, I saw a really hot chick in the crowd.

“Like, I’m being jarringly honest – I’d marry her right now. Right now,” Kyrgios said as he returned to the bench.

Federer took control thanks to Kyrgios’ mental lapse as the female fan clearly threw the Aussie off as the Swiss Master went on to claim the 6-7, 7-6, 10-7 victory.

All Blacks dish up a lesson in running the ball

ight talking points from the All Blacks’ win over the Springboks in their Rugby World Cup opener.

As Corporal Jones might have said, “Mr Hansen knows what he’s doing” We’re a long, long way from the final, but as a statement of intent in the 23-13 win for the All Blacks over South Africa was a great start. The aura of invincibility, which had apparently, according to our media friends in the north, been shredded, was always a bit of a journalistic construct anyway.

But if there is such a beast, then, in dry conditions, that will hopefully last for the rest of the tournament, playing against these All Blacks will loom as a scary prospect.

Yes, the 2019 team looks more experimental than the side that won four years ago, but Messrs Hansen, Ian Foster, and Grant Fox have selected a squad that has a fresh, fearless look about it, epitomised by the stunning interchange of passing, spatial awareness, and courage to, as they’ve said so many times in the

Hansen era, to play what’s in front of them, that led to the Scott Barrett try in the 26th minute. As he plunged over between the posts the game was basically won.

Walking (actually running, but that’s not how the song goes) in light, we’re walking in light One of the reasons even a non-New Zealander might have enjoyed the 2015 World Cup was that the All Blacks played a game that involved running the ball.

halfback, but he had a nightmare display.

With the Springbok game plan revolving around kicking, it was essential he got enough hang time on his box kicks. Most of the South African forwards look like they have night jobs as bouncers at a bucket of blood night club, so if you give that ravaging horde a chance to get some speed on, catching the ball in front of them is going to be dangerous and painful.

But de Klerk’s kicking was weak and short, sometimes putting as much pressure on his own players as on the All Blacks.

Yes, it was gutless Calling a decision by a referee “pretty gutless” probably isn’t the most diplomatic phrase.

But Kieran Read was dead right when he summed up the 21st minute ruling by referee Jerome Garces to not, at the least, give a yellow card, or, at the most, award a penalty try, when Boks’ wing Makazole Mapimpi lay over the ball with the All Blacks on hot attack near the South African line.

If Garces had to penalise Mapimpi for breaking the rules to stop what was an almost certain try, how on earth could a penalty

be the only punishment?

Is he our new Michael Jones?

Ardie Savea has been a sensation all season, and the way he played in Yokohama his form is far from flagging.

Back in 1987 Jones was one who lit up the World Cup. Savea, a runner who usually requires two, if not three, men to halt him, should do the same in Japan.

Bless Kevin and Robyn Barrett If ever a quote deserved to be true, it’s a line attributed to Kevin Barrett when he retired after 167 games for Taranaki: “I’m gonna go breed some All Blacks.”

Beauden produced his usual quicksilver magic in Yokohama, but just as impressive was the display from bother Scott. Barrett taking over from Brodie Retallick offered, according to many critics in the lead-up to the test, a weak point in the All Blacks.

In response Scott Barrett tackled like a demon, and made the world a happy place for locks everywhere when he galloped in for his try.

World in harmony?

Having been accustomed to beautiful renditions of the national anthem, from 1999 when

Hinewehi Mohi bravely sang in te reo at Twickenham before a pool game with England, to this year when we enjoyed the stunning baritone voice of Moses Mackay, from Sole3Mio, it was very strange before the Yokohama game when the only voices we heard were the All Blacks themselves.

As singers they make very good footy players, although, if it was any consolation the Springbok captain, Siya Kolisi, was so stunningly flat he made some of our players sound like Roy Orbison.

And then there was Spark When I signed up months ago at a Spark shop for a World Cup package the very pleasant assistant I dealt with said, “I don’t think this will work, and if it doesn’t I hope I’ve got enough sick days stored up to keep out of the shop when angry people come in.

“You know the worst part? The guy (managing director Simon Moutter) who set it up has buggered off and will be long out of the country if it hits the fan.”

In hindsight I wish I’d asked him if he had any more startlingly accurate World Cup predictions to offer.

Less than 24 hours after being crowned champion South Island Two-Year-old for her deeds last season, Miss Federer gave notice she will be a force to be reckoned with in her three-year-old campaign when she captured the Listed New Zealand Bloodstock Canterbury Belle Stakes (1200m) against her age group rivals at Riccarton.

The Gr.3 Woburn Farm 2YO Classic (1200m) winner had resumed with a tidy effort for second at Riccarton a fortnight ago and had been expected to improve with that outing.

Expectations were tempered slightly when she drew barrier 13 in the 15-horse field which saw her installed second favourite for the contest behind her fresh-up conqueror Woodcote Lass.

Rider Kylie Williams used the Swiss Ace Filly’s brilliant gate speed to negate the outside gate as she made a beeline to the inside rail and the pace-making role.

Williams kicked the Swiss Ace filly clear at the top of the long Riccarton straight where she bravely kept up a strong gallop to hold out the late charge of All About Magic, with Woodcote Lass running on well to take third.

Trainer Andrew Carston knew he had his charge up to the mark for the race, but made special mention of the ride by Williams to secure the win.

“She had come on nicely from her first run where she hit the wall at the 100m,” Carston said.

“I hadn’t been able to give her a trial before that race so I knew she would take plenty of benefit from it.

Resident Waikato Stud stallion Ocean Park was to the forefront of the trans-Tasman racing action on Saturday where he was represented by four individual winners on the day, including a Group Three success at Royal Randwick.

The Chris Waller-trained Kolding booked himself a start in the Gr.1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) in a fortnight when he displayed all the toughness of his five-time Group One winning sire after fighting back to win the Gr.3 Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m) after being headed by eventual runner-up Fierce Impact.

That followed wins by Fabric over 1400m at Caulfield, Ocean Addict over 2200m at Eagle Farm while Seductress was successful over 2100m in the first race of the day at Hastings.

Hong Kong-based galloper King Opie provided the icing on the cake by making it a fabulous five for Ocean Park when he took out the main race at Sha Tin, the Class 2 Pok Oi Centenary Cup Handicap.

Waikato Stud principal Mark Chittick was rapt with the results, particularly by the victory of Fabric who the Stud retains an ownership interest in and is trained by good mate, Danny O’Brien.

“I was talking with Danny on Saturday morning and he thought Fabric was ready to run a bold race although he was concerned by the wide draw,” Chittick said.

“Craig (Williams) did a great job in getting her into a good position and she really let down well in the home straight. It was the sort of win that suggests she is capable of getting some black type so that is what the plan for her will be. It’s so good to see her win for Danny as he is a great mate of mine.”

“Kylie did a super job as she had a plan before the race and she executed it perfectly.

“She (Miss Federer) did start to get a little tired at the end but she had done a bit to get to the front so that was to be expected.”

Carston will now monitor the recovery of his charge before setting her for her next assignment although plans for a start in the Gr.1 Gavelhouse.com New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) in November are still up in the air.

“People have asked me if she will get the 1600m of the 1000 Guineas and the simple answer is I just don’t know,” he said.

“She has a nomination for the race and that is our target but whether she gets there or not will be up to her recovery from today and how she goes when we step her up over more ground.

“As long as she comes through this well, I will give her a month between runs and have a crack at the Barnswood Farm Stakes

(Gr.3, 1400m) at Ashburton in mid-October.

“If she is going to get that sort of trip then Ashburton is a good place to do it. Once we see how she goes there then we can make plans for the Guineas or not.”

A daughter of dual stakes winning mare, Halobelle, Miss Federer was a $10,000 purchase from the Bradbury Park draft at the 2018 National Yearling Sale. She has now won four of her seven career starts and over $120,000.

Smalling kicks off a new life NZME Why is it important a footballer learns the language of the country in which he plays?

The sunshine is pouring into the room at Roma’s training ground and Chris Smalling is considering all the famous team-mates at Manchester United who came from overseas and were quickly fluent and also that old trope of the English footballer who speaks English and only English.

“You do see very few English players going abroad, and those who do are largely good players, otherwise they wouldn’t have gone,” he says.

“But I feel a lot of their downfall is in the language. On the pitch, you can learn the different basics of ‘left’, ‘right’ and ‘behind you’, but off the pitch, you want to have that influence around the team.

“We’ll be travelling together as a team, so it’s important to communicate as much as I can.

“That helps me be more comfortable around my teammates. It makes the experience a lot better. Maybe where some English players are not fully committed to the language, off the pitch, it is a big divide.”

How soon before he starts?

He points across at a member of Roma’s staff, who looks trim enough to be the fitness coach. “That’s the club’s language teacher – I already have. A little and often is the plan.”

It was a whirlwind last two weeks of the transfer window, one in which he made a major decision for his career and family.

Cane incident brings rule change NZME All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has revealed World Rugby have changed the process around head injury assessments at halftime to avoid another incident like the one in which Sam Cane was denied the right to play the second half against the Springboks.

During the All Blacks’ Rugby World Cup opener against the Springboks at Yokohama, Cane was told to undergo an HIA at half

time by the independent match doctor after taking a knock in the first half.

Cane passed the test but could not then return to the field, as half time lasted for 15 minutes, five more than the maximum time any player is allocated to undergo testing.

Hansen was understandably miffed at this situation after his side’s 23-13 victory and yesterday revealed it would not be repeated after World Rugby assured him the

process would be amended.

“We’ve had a notification that they’re going to modify the time-keeping so instead of it happening when they say there’s going to be a test the clock doesn’t start until you get to the actual room itself,” Hansen said.

“Last night was an exception to the rule.

“Normally an HIA will happen during the course of the game and they’ll take the player off and normally that’s when it starts.

“Last night Sam was back in our changing shed and they decided they were going to do one so he then had to go to the other side of the stadium basically and then do the test so it wasn’t any fault of his.

“It was the actual test that took longer than it should’ve.

“It wasn’t anything we could control so I think they’ve now worked out that’s not common sense is it?

“We’re here to look after the

athlete so they’ve modified it which is great, a really good response.

“They’ve shown good leadership and changed it.

“I’m glad they’ve sorted it out.

“I wasn’t overly happy about it last night, one of your best players missing 40 minutes of the game but it is what it is.

“They’ve acknowledged they haven’t got that part of it right and they’ve changed it so you can’t ask for more.”
