It is Methven’s biggest event of the year, and went off without a hitch. The Methven Rodeo attracted a crowd of around 5000, and brought hundreds of thousands of dollars into town. Spokesperson Dave Harper said the 47th annual event had been bigger than last year’s, with yesterday’s warm and sunny weather to thank for attracting extra crowds. In addition there had been a bigger emphasis on side shows, stalls and rides for children. “We are trying to orientate it more towards families,” he said. The approximate 300 cowboys and cowgirls competing had come from throughout New Zealand. They had been a fit and healthy bunch, with lots of training under their leather belts.
Consequently, injuries had been few. He was aware of just one dislocated shoulder, as well as the usual bumps and bruises. “There was no helicopter rides, that was a bonus,” Harper said. There had also been no ambulance rides. Secretary Rosa Harper said the bulls had proved too tough and none of the dozen or so cowboys in the event lasted the eight seconds required. “The bulls won the day,” she said. The Methven community was another big winner, with 10 per cent of entry fees going to Methven Lions Club which looked after the gate, and much of the annual proceeds also donated back to the community. In the past two years alone the club had donated $10,000 to local groups including most recently Methven Care Trust.

Dave said the shift several years ago to not allowing BYO alcohol and just having an onsite bar was continuing to work well and prevent intoxication issues. A bar operated on the premises, and there was to be an after party at Mount Hutt Memorial Hall with live performers last night. Father and son duo Pat McCarthy and Patrick McCarthy took out the team roping, while Rakaia cowboy Adam Williams won the open bareback. For the saddle bronc Lane Whitelock was the champ, and other winners were Klay Lanigan in steer wrestling, Jenny Atkinson in the barrel race, and Corey Church in rope and tie.
