Christchurch’s new multi-million dollar, multi-use stadium, could be built and supported with funds from the pockets of Ashburton District ratepayers. That option has been proposed by the Committee for Canterbury think tank, and it’s one that
several Canterbury mayors have given tentative support. But while her counterparts, Selwyn’s Sam Broughton and Hurunui’s Winton Daley might be keen, Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel is not sure the funding option would find support from her ratepayers. The idea has been around for a while, initially discussed at a Can-
terbury mayoral forum, but it’s an idea Ashburton’s councillors were less than enthusiastic about when she raised it at a council meeting in May. At the time Favel said she didn’t think there was an appetite for the district to support the idea as the council had invested heavily in its own stadium.
The issue had not been an agenda item and had not been fully debated, she said. “However, when I’ve talked around the community and asked people’s feelings, I’ve been surprised to find a few were in support.” While she stopped well short of committing the council to a
