International Brand. The national organisation had come under some social media pressure from the Facebook group, New Zealand Anti-Rodeo Coalition, following the Methven event last month after which they raised concerns about the Methven Lions Club supporting cruelty towards animals by accepting profits from the event through ticket sales. Initially, Lions Club New Zea-
land were staunch and implied they were not responsible for what individual clubs around the country did. “The autonomy of a club allows them to make their own decisions of involvements with events,” they said on the Anti-Rodeo Facebook page. “This is not something that the national organisation is involved with, or governs.” Less than 12 hours following
that statement, however, there was a change in heart and the press release stating that they would no longer support clubs to participate in rodeo events. “The concerns were immediately taken to the Lions Clubs New Zealand Council of Governors with the resulting decision to advise Lions Clubs throughout the New Zealand to disassociate nationally from rodeo events,” they said in the release.
