land were staunch and implied they were not responsible for what individual clubs around the country did. “The autonomy of a club allows them to make their own decisions of involvements with events,” they said on the Anti-Rodeo Facebook page. “This is not something that the national organisation is involved with, or governs.” Less than 12 hours following

that statement, however, there was a change in heart and the press release stating that they would no longer support clubs to participate in rodeo events. “The concerns were immediately taken to the Lions Clubs New Zealand Council of Governors with the resulting decision to advise Lions Clubs throughout the New Zealand to disassociate nationally from rodeo events,” they said in the release.

After a building bordering Rakaia School went up in smoke overnight on Tuesday, students saw first-hand the importance of fire safety. Flames obliterated the outside shed on a Normanby Street property during a fire which sparked late on Tuesday night, and left debris strewn on the

Rakaia School field on Wednesday morning. A passing motorist spotted the fire at around 11.30pm and dialed 111. Teams from Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade and Ashburton Fire and Emergency rushed to the scene, where they found the fire “fully involved”. Rakaia Fire Chief Tyrone Burrowes said the teams worked for

three hours through the night to contain and extinguish the flames, but the shed was ultimately “totalled”. Fire crews taped off an area around the shed – including a section of Rakaia School field – and investigators were working yesterday to determine the cause of the fire. Burrowes said it did not appear to be suspicious. Rakaia School Principal Mark

Ellis said the incident was an ironic example of what students had just been learning that week – the importance of fire safety. “The owners were happy for us to look through in the morning, so we’ve all been over there,” Ellis said. While it was very sad for the owners, he said it was a good opportunity to see first-hand the damage fire can do.

Methven High Country Fete visitors blended wine, shopping and sophistication when they turned out in their droves yesterday. Held annually at Mt Harding Racecourse in Methven, the fete attracted more than 600 people from throughout Canterbury and

even as far away as the West Coast. Organised by Methven women Julie Sergeant and Denise Dixey for the second year in a row, the fete aims to attract people who like to do their shopping in style. “You can sit down and have a glass of wine, listen to live music, and you can have some beautiful food, it’s a grown-ups day out,”

Sergeant said as the fete was drawing to a close. There were about 120 stalls representing businesses and artists from throughout New Zealand, with many handmade products. Stalls sold “pretty much everything” from good wine and food, to plants, lawn mowers and homewares.

Models walked around the fete to show some of the quality fashion items for sale. Entry was $15 per person, but there were group discounts, and coach tours came from as far away as Timaru and Christchurch. A donation from proceeds would go to Methven Care Trust.

Clubs were ordered by Lions Club New Zealand to not speak to media in the wake of this week’s announcement and to direct all questions back to head office. Methven Rodeo president, Steve Sauer, hadn’t had the chance to gain a full understanding of the decision but said it would impact the Methven Lions more than it would the rodeo itself. “It’s a good money earner for them and it all goes back into the Methven community,” he said. It is understood the New Zealand Rodeo Cowboys’ Association is considering defamation action against online group New Zealand Anti-Rodeo Coalition. Association president Lyal Cocks, of Wanaka, believed the decision by the Lions Clubs was a result of online pressure from anti-rodeo groups, who he said had accused the Lions organisation of animal cruelty. “This anti-rodeo group is a sham, designed only to spread hate and lies, and it’s a pity that the Lions organisation has bowed down to this totally unacceptable harassment.’’ Cocks believed the Lions Clubs’ decision to disassociate from rodeos would have major effects on small towns where rodeos were the major event of the summer. “In places like Methven, the rodeo is the biggest event of the year. “Many of these communities rely on the funds raised at these events and without the Lions support, these communities will suffer.’’ The association was seeking legal advice, he said. i-SITE fight not going away By Sue NewmaN

The signs might be down, the doors locked and the lights out, but the fight to reopen Ashburton’s i-SITE will continue, says Ashburton retailer Tony Todd. He’s been the driving force behind a public campaign to keep the i-SITE open, but says the community’s appeals to the Ashburton District Council have been falling on deaf ears. Todd called a public rally supporting the centre and this was attended by about 400 people, and a 1000-strong signature petition was also presented to the council. Neither raised a flutter of interest around the council table. The council might think by ignoring the community’s call to reopen the centre the issue would eventually go away. It won’t, Todd said. He likens the issue to the community outrage of the proposed closure of Ashburton Hospital. “Yes, it’s in a different league, but people are still pretty incensed about it.” Every day, many times each day, there are visitors standing outside the closed East Street building looking bewildered, he said. And those were just the people the community was seeing. How many more stopped, walked away and travelled on through Ashburton because they couldn’t find the information they needed.

Dog tags returned to family By LiNda CLarke Tony Todd Todd will meet next week with a number of like-minded people to look at where to from here. The closure came on the back of a council-commissioned report that suggested Experience Mid Canterbury would be better diverting the money it used to run the i-SITE into other areas of tourism promotion. The organisation is given an annual grant of $386,000 each year from the council but this is reducing by $10,000 per year. In the last financial year EMC made a $10,000 loss and the i-SITE closure was part of its drive to meet budget. To replace the i-SITE the council has set up an information booth in the Ashburton Library.

A dog tag belonging to a New Zealand soldier who died on active service 100 years ago has finally made its way to the soldier’s Ashburton family. Perth man Chris Slade found the dog tag belonging to William Protheroe among his late father’s possessions many years ago and has been keen to return it. Protheroe died in England in July, 1917, during World War One. He had enlisted two years before, naming his father Alexander Protheroe of Elgin as his next of kin. After a story about Slade’s quest to return the dog tag in the Guardian in 2016, Ashburton’s Warwick Protheroe identified the soldier as his great uncle. Slade met with Protheroe last week in Christchurch to hand the dog tag over.

He said he was pleased to return it during the year which marked the 100th anniversary of the soldier’s death. He still has no idea how his father came to be in possession of the dog tag; the two families are not related. Slade also gave the Ashburton man a folder of information about his late uncle which includes a photograph of the war grave in England where Protheroe was laid to rest. Both men were pleased the dog tag has been returned, though the mystery of how it came back via the Slade family remains unsolved. According to military records William Protheroe died in the New Zealand General Hospital in Codford, England, in July 1917, following an illness. He is buried in the Codford War Graves Cemetery.

Protheroe was born in Rangiora about 1878 to Alexander and Mary Protheroe. He enlisted with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in June 1915, stating he was a 36-yearold widower. Driver Protheroe’s service number was 6/3133 – the same as that on the dog tag – and records show he embarked with the 7th Reinforcements Canterbury Infantry Battalion in October 1915. In February, 1916, he was transferred to New Zealand Army Service Corps in Egypt. He was serving in France when he became unwell and was transferred back to England for treatment in December 1916. His name appears on the Ashburton War Memorial, along with that of his brother Ernest, who survived to return home from the war along with another brother, Edwin.

For months after Kaikoura was hit by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake, cash donations for quake aid continued to flow in the Ashburton District. And this week, with $1200 in the bank, the organising team of the district’s relief project decided to wrap the appeal up and donate the remaining cash to Kaikoura’s Takahanga marae. The aid project became a new role for Trev’s Barbecue, an aid project set up after the 2011 Canterbury earthquake, but this time it involved airborne food deliveries. In those early days, Trev’s Barbecue founder Trevor Hurley said, access was only available by air and Ashburton’s pilots were some of the first on the ground. “The idea of flying in food came from Terry Hewitt. He contacted me because we’d had that experience with Christchurch,” he said. Three aircraft flew the first food relief mission and over the following week 18 return flights were made delivering food and grocery items. Over a two week period the flights continued and the Ashburton community donated money and goods. New World and Allenton Meats were two big commercial players in the relief project, Hurley said. Kaikoura’s Takahanga Marae became the central base for aid and for several days provided meals for Ashburton pilot Terrry Hewitt played a lead roll in last year’s Kaikoura’s earthquake relief project. up to 1200 people each day. Hakatere Cultural Festival being held today By Katie todd

Over 500 school children will fill the Ashburton Trust Event Centre with music and movement during the biggest ever Hakatere Cultural Festival being held today. Fourteen cultural groups from 12 local schools will take tenminute turns in the spotlight, showing audiences what they have rehearsed for weeks. “The students are looking forward to being able to perform at the Event Centre this year,” organiser Amy Huggins said. “It’s great to see the centre being used for such a fantastic local schools event.”

She said this year’s entries included 12 kapa haka groups, a Pasifika group and a multicultural choir. The day will kick off with a performance from St Joseph’s Kapa Haka group at 10am, and conclude with a 1.15pm performance from Ashburton College Kapa Haka. The Hakatere Festival was rebooted in 2015 and is run by the Te Huka Tai Trust, who aim to help young people explore and experience their cultural background. Other cultural initiatives backed by the trust include kapa haka and carving workshops.

Irrigators hear of need to tell story By ColiN williSCroft

IrrigationNZ is aware of the need to better engage the public about irrigation, and accepts it needs to recognise the impact it has had in terms of modifying rivers and river health, INZ chairwoman Nicky Hyslop said. Hyslop, who addressed the INZ annual meeting at the Hotel Ashburton yesterday, said it was important for the organisation to continue to listen to the community but also to work hard to get information out in a form that was easy for people to pick up and understand. Those involved in irrigation now recognise they need to tell their story, she said. “There’s a realisation now that if that doesn’t happen there will be a vacuum, and if we don’t fill

We need to make sure we’re part of the conversation. “We need to talk not just about the economic and social benefits of irrigation but also about the ability of modern irrigation to address the issues of land intensification,” Hyslop said.

“Multi-purpose water infrastructure can address both environmental issues and community needs and provide resilience in the face of climate change.” She said the second stage of the Central Plains Water scheme that was now under way will significantly reduce demand for groundwater in Selwyn – a winwin for both the community and the environment over the longer term.” It was probably not well enough understood that INZ was just as much about best practice as it was about being an advocate, Hyslop said. “It’s about excellence in irrigation. About making sure our members have access to the tools and the new technology, and that they are aware of how they can impact on the environment.”

Winchmore Methodist Church for sale By Linda CLarke

The Winchmore Church is for sale and the 106-year-old building is attracting plenty of interest. Property Brokers agent Greg Jopson said at least 20 people attended an open day at the church last weekend and the building will be open again this Sunday for interested buyers. The last service in the church was at the end of July 2011. Not long after that, owners of the Methodist church said it would need an expensive seismic survey and closed it down. The final service had been a celebration of 100 years and church stalwart Brian Reesby said the pews were full on that occasion. But only a handful of families had been attending regular Sunday services, so closure and the cost of a survey could not be argued. He has many family memories there, including the baptism of his children Alister and Jilly and grandson Cameron just a week before the closure. He also remembers the baptism of his sister when he was just six years old. “I had to sit down the back with an uncle and aunt and be quiet.” Reesby still lives about a kilometre from the church and now worships in town at the Baring Square Methodist Church. While he was sad about the Winchmore closure at the time, he now hopes a new owner will breathe life into the church and quarter-acre section on the corner of Winchmore School Road and the Methven highway. The building does not have stained glass windows, but contains wooden pews that will be sold separately. It is officially listed as having one bedroom and one bathroom, with a rateable value of $107,000. It is to be sold by deadline sale with offers by December 14. Jopson said there was potential for the section to be absorbed by neighbouring land owners or for the building to be used for a new purpose. Seen a lot of that familiar red and yellow chopper in the skies? You wouldn’t be wrong. It’s been a busy 2017 for the Canterbury Westpac Rescue Helicopter – averaging two call-outs per day, and visiting Mid Canterbury about once every three days. One hundred missions were tallied in the Mid Canterbury region between the start of this year and the end of October, and 571 across Canterbury in total. Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust CEO Christine Prince said mission numbers have been constantly trending upwards since the rescue helicopter was first introduced to the region. “It is now the norm for the air rescue crews to average 60 missions per month, and this number is often significantly higher,” she said. “This is something we are constantly having to monitor and plan for in order to keep meeting service delivery costs.” Nearly half of the call-outs last month were trauma incidents, including motor vehicle accidents, falls, farm accidents

and leisure-related accidents for mountain biking, tramping, horse riding, rugby and skiing. Throughout Canterbury last month the helicopter also un-

dertook nine medical retrievals, predominately for cardiac issues, and four search and rescue missions, including a beacon activation at Pudding Hill.

According to Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue general manager Rachael McNutt, 90 of the 100 Mid Canterbury missions undertaken this year saw patients

transferred to hospital. Two patients were flown to Ashburton Hospital, one to Timaru Hospital and all others to Christchurch Public or Christchurch Women’s. The Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Service are now fundraising to replace old and “failing” night vision goggle (NVG) equipment carried on board the helicopter and putting out the call for donations. “We are encouraging businesses, individuals and community organisations to dig deep and help us,” Prince said. She encouraged anyone able to help to get in contact and said purchasing five new sets of NVGs would ensure crews are properly equipped to save lives “no matter the time of day or night”.

Putin, Assad embrace Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has praised Vladimir Putin for “saving Syria”, as the two leaders met ahead of a summit between Russia, Turkey and Iran to discuss the peace process. Putin greeted Assad with a warm embrace as he arrived at his residence at the Black Sea resort of Sochi yesterday. Assad then thanked Moscow military leaders “on behalf of the Syrian people”, despite allegations that that Russian airstrikes are said to have killed thousands of civilians, according to the Daily Mail. Russian television showed footage of Putin and Assad entering a meeting with the top brass of Russia’s defence ministry and the General Staff. “I asked the Syrian president to stop by,” Putin can be seen turning to Assad and saying: “I would like to introduce you to people who played a key role in saving Syria.” “On behalf of the entire Syrian people, I express my gratitude for what you have done,” Assad told generals. “We will not forget it.” Assad’s opponents, and Western governments, have accused Russia of killing significant numbers of Syrian civilians with its air strikes, alle-

Partridge Family lead singer passes away David Cassidy, the TV star, singer and 1970s heartthrob, has died aged 67. Cassidy was recently rushed to a Florida hospital after suffering organ failure. He was placed in an induced coma and was being cared for in the intensive care unit. Earlier this year Cassidy had revealed that he was in the early stages of dementia. Hiding behind the keyboard Matt Markham

o one likes a bully, especially a bully who hides behind the safety of a keyboard. Online bullies are like those pesky little moths in the summer time who just keep coming back for more, blinded by their own senselessness and desire to be in the light. We’ve seen a classic case of online bullying this week with the Lions Clubs New Zealand decision to advise Lions clubs throughout the country to disassociate themselves with rodeo events in the future. All stemmed from some criticism from an activist group who operate from a Facebook page. It can be sugar-coated all they like, but the basic fact of this tale is that Lions Club New Zealand were getting some bad reviews on their Facebook page and they didn’t like it. They asked for it to stop. It didn’t. So they reacted, badly. They bowed down to online pressure and blatant bullying from those who tend to try and use mob mentality force to get their message across. What a shame. What made it worse though was, that in the first instance, when they were pleading for people to remove their bad reviews from their Facebook page, they acknowledged that they had no control over what events Lions Clubs around the country are involved in, and nor was it something that they governed. But nine hours after they publicly stated that, they reneged and changed their minds. If that doesn’t scream of bowing to some online pressure and bullying, then what does? The Methven Lions, who had no part in the decision, have lost a major fundraising opportunity in all of this. That money was pumped back into the community at any number of levels – so, although some other fundraising organisation will probably pick up the role – it is potentially money lost to the Methven community. I can imagine they will be frustrated. Many of the people who serve in that Lions group are locals who have been attending the rodeo for a number of years and have seen first-hand the respect and care that is given to the animals who take part. It would appear they aren’t going to get the same chance to have their say that those who forced the decision to be made did either, which is probably the biggest shame of all.

YOUR VIEW Florence Nightingale Your recent articles on the old Ashburton Hospital have made extremely interesting reading, and it made me remember about ten years ago I was in the Christchurch Public Hospital, and feeling sorry for myself, and then thought of an article I had to research for an exercise while I was a member of the Ashburton writer’s group. My subject was Florence Nightingale and it made disturbing reading for those early times in medicine, and the stigma that

went with it. I picked up pen and paper and wrote this little verse while I looked out the door of my hospital room and thought how lucky we all are to be living in this age of advanced medicine and medical care. When I was discharged from the hospital, I pinned it to the wall in my ward. Thought you might like to read it. A city hospital here at best. To those who put her to the test. Changing up or down a gear I

did it ! I threw in the stable career. And four years later I’m chuffed to be able to report I haven’t recorded one single moment of regret. Not one. Like most of us, I had a job, mine was a pretty good job and it had served me well and provided plenty of experiences over 33 years, but for some time I’d had the urge to refresh my life and get off the mouse-wheel. Round and round and round and round . . . decade in, decade out. Of those years, I suppose a good 30-ish were spent on breakfast radio shows up and down the country from Auckland to Dunedin and parts in between. Funny really, ‘cos I never set out to do breakfast shows, but somehow always ended up anchoring them. I became a slave to the 4am alarm but was constantly reminded not to complain as I had the afternoons free to myself. Except a lot of it was spent on the couch as the will to accomplish great things mid-arvo seemed to dry up after years and years of earlies. After a particularly long stint in Dunedin, I resigned and went to work for the rival company in Christchurch doing afternoons. Half the money and twice as happy. Until the offer of breakfast was waved under my nose again and after a few months, there began another episode of 12 years of 4ams and commute drives to Christchurch from Ashburton every weekday. Back in Dunedin at various points I saw colleagues made redundant through restructuring

and receive handsome payouts then often find re-employment back on the radio again a short time later. “Bastards,” I thought. “Why can’t that be me?” Take a break, skive off somewhere interesting for awhile then pick up another gig. It never happened. Finally, in 2013, I found myself up against a wall. I had an excellent employer but the pressure to deliver what they wanted just didn’t feel like me anymore. Multiple industry consultants were delivering often conflicting, simultaneous messages about what I should be delivering on air. And none of it felt honest to who I am. When I found myself in what felt like an untenable situation, I knew something had to give. After talking it through at home we hatched plan B. And I sat down to write my resignation letter, offering with it a nine-month lead-in to allow for succession planning. And a chance to save enough to get me through for a bit, dayto-day, affording the break I’d always dreamed of. The day I handed that letter over, an unbelievable thing happened. I felt a huge weight lift immediately.

Instantly all the pressure disappeared. I really enjoyed working out the nine months and the day I finally left the building, I had absolutely no regrets. I turned the radio off, I did a kind of media cold turkey and started smelling the roses. We bought a tent, went camping, set off on long drives on roads around the district we’d never been on before. Headed to the hills whenever the urge took us, for a coffee and sausage roll at Staveley, the curio shop at Mayfield, a drive up to the headwaters, anywhere. And all without the knowledge that there was work on Monday. It was just pure and simple, the best feeling ever. Liberty is such a sweet sensation. When I’d previously dreamed of doing such a thing, I imagined stocking up before hand-over time with toilet paper, soap, Weetbix, frozen mixed vegetables and fresh underpants so that no matter what happened, as long as I could afford fresh milk and bread, I’d eat, wipe my bum, be clean and have good undies. Nothing else seemed to matter. Strip life right back to the simple stuff. It felt sooooo good. After 18 months of doing nothing for work other than our function venue business, I was offered the chance to work on the radio again, weekday afternoons, in my home town. Boom! It felt right and I took it. And I fell in love with the radio all over again. I had had what I needed, a break, that’s all it took to reawaken the passion and do what I’ve

always done. These days my role has been extended to provide shows into the Southland, Otago and Taranaki markets, all from Ashburton. It’s the best thing I could have hoped for. I took a risk and a pay-cut, and trusted my gut and I don’t think it could have worked out better from my perspective. It can be such an incredibly daunting thing changing up what you’ve always done, my co-host used to call it the golden handcuffs and I think she thought I’d never do it. But it’s now coming up four years, life goes on, the balance between work and the rest of life is near perfect. Waking up and thinking, “it’s Tuesday, no it’s Friday . . . hold on, is it Sunday, no . . . it’s Wednesday, that’s right, it’s Wednesday! I’ll make a cup of tea and go back to bed for half an hour.” Luxury! Just delicious! I’m not suggesting it’s that easy for everyone, but nothing changes if nothing changes. Sometimes you just have to follow your gut. Life’s too short to be stuck in the wrong groove. And usually, there is another path, if you’re just brave enough to set off on it. And, if consultation had taken place, Mayor Donna and councillors wouldn’t be receiving so much negative commentary on this issue as they are now. I said to Donna, “people have been in your ear” on this issue. Donna says because she didn’t receive a large number of emails from my challenge to the 400/500 people at the rally, she chose to do nothing. Donna you should take note of the 1000-plus petition organised by Karen McIntyre in a short space of time. You should take note of the 400/500 people who turned up at the rally on the checker board. You should take note of the 50/60 people at the EMC AGM. You should take note of the numerous letters and comments appearing in the media. Word is Donna you were very defensive at the Newcomers’ Network meeting when challenged on this issue. Donna, you and the council need to start heeding the feedback you are getting from our community and remind you once again there hasn’t been one letter of support in the media for coun-

cil’s decision to close the i-SITE. Mayor Donna believes housing information brochures at the library is a good compromise. She maintains it has better visibility and wi-fi. Donna who goes to a library for travel information? Plus, the i-SITE had wi-fi before it was taken out. Let us remember, that EMC acted to close the i-SITE not by choice, but because of underfunding by council. And this funding issue will get worse with council cutting funding by $10,000 a year until it fails. Mayor Donna states she has had “discussions with a number of charity groups” interested in locating to this “high profile“ premise (but not high profile enough for an i-SITE). Donna you need to talk with Jane Donaldson, the council environment services manager. She is on the money when she states “a resource consent was granted for an information centre. Any change would mean a new resource consent would be needed”. If council go for a new resource consent Donna, council can expect a large number of objections and, once again, at more cost to

the ratepayer. Can I also make comment on a statement made by Bruce Moffatt at the EMC AGM. Bruce stated that he had to deal “face to face” with the Chinese market up in Asia, as they only use i-Phones when travelling in New Zealand. If this is the case Bruce, why do most i-SITEs have multi-lingual staff, in some cases over half the staff are multi-lingual. Just as an aside it would be interesting to ask about the legality of Bruce Moffatt from EMC working out of the i-SITE building. As I have already said, this building is consented for information services. As Bruce isn’t “dispensing information” maybe he shouldn’t be there. Finally, I can’t believe the total silence on this issue from all councillors. Are you really all on the same page with this issue? You all want to see this i-SITE closed? Maybe those councillors that have pushed for reduced funding for EMC could also explain their reasoning. Our community deserves that explanation Tony Todd

YOUR VIEW i-SITE closure Well Mayor Donna and councillors, another letter in the media (Tuesday, November 21) with a disappointed couple looking for an i-SITE. Just as well Ashburton retailers are being true-spirited people and pointing visitors in the right direction. Donna – you still have the big “I” sign in the carpark and designated carparks for i-SITE staff, so maybe all is not lost yet! However, on a more serious note, at the EMC [Experience Mid Canterbury] AGM Mayor Donna maintained she hadn’t replied to my letters addressed to the media because they hadn’t been addressed to her. So, after the AGM I did email her directly, which she did reply to, endeavouring to justify council’s decision to close the i-SITE. I was keen for the i-SITE to be re-opened till July 1, 2018, to allow for public consultation, however, Donna’s reply covered being exposed to legal action if redundant staff were re-employed and that council didn’t need to consult the public on this issue. My reply to that would be, if council had acted before the re-

Pressure on farmgate prices Dairy prices fell for the fourth time in a row at yesterday’s GlobalDairyTrade auction, putting more downward pressure on Fonterra’s farmgate milk price forecast. The forecast, which under law has to be reviewed every three months, stands at $6.75/kg of milksolids, compared with DairyNZ’s most recent estimate of break-even of $5.20 to $5.25/kg. Some banks have already revised their forecasts for the season down to around $6.25/kg to $6.50/kg. At yesterday’s auction, the GDT price index fell by 3.4 per cent and the average winning price came to $US2970 a tonne. Prices overall have now fallen by 10 per cent since early October. Weakness was broad-based, with the largest falls in casein, down 12.6 per cent, skim milk powder, down 6.5 per cent and butter, down 5.9 per cent. Whole milk powder prices – which have the greatest bearing on Fonterra’s farmgate milk price – fell 2.7 per cent to $US2778

Boomers are less consumer-focused They are often seen as the asset rich generation who are off “spending the kids inheritance” but new research points to baby boomers being less self-indulgent than some might believe. A New Zealand study comparing the lives and attitudes of baby boomers (aged 55 to 70) with millennials (aged 18 to 30) found boomers were more concerned about the environment and were less consumer-focused than the younger generation. Of those surveyed 70 per cent of boomers said they cared passionately about the environment compared with 59 per cent of millennials. While 65 per cent of the boomers said they did not want or need possessions compared to 45 per cent of millennials. The biggest concern for boomers was the plight of the youngest adult generation – and in particular their mental health and financial situation. Boomers were particularly worried about the inability of the younger generation to get on the property ladder. More than half of the boomers surveyed felt they needed to help their children out financially now – rather than leaving an inheritance or forcing them to be self-sufficient. But the research also revealed some boomers are still struggling to get on top of their own financial situation. More than a quarter of the survey respondents still had a

mortgage and of those, a quarter would not pay it off until they were between 70 and 80 years old. More than a third also said they were not confident about having a comfortable lifestyle once they retire. The research revealed the changing attitudes towards retirement with the term being seen as outdated and people more attracted to descriptions such as “the freedom years” or the “age of choice”. Of those surveyed threequarters of baby-boomers said they would like to work as long as they could while 41 per cent wanted to work flexibly – although only half felt they could talk to their employer about it. Scott outbid foreigner Scott Technology outbid an overseas buyer when it bought Dunedin-based engineering firm DC Ross out of receivership, a sixmonthly report from the receivers shows. DC Ross, which supplies precision metal formed parts, was tipped into receivership in September 2016 and in June this year Scott Technology said it had entered an unconditional agreement to purchase all the assets of the company for a total purchase price expected to be less than $500,000. - NZME

Brewer in demand Renaissance Brewing has attracted 10 parties interested enough to undertake due diligence on buying the craft beer maker with bids due at the end of the week. The Blenheim-based boutique brewer was put up for sale by voluntary administrators Iain Shephard and Jessica Kellow of Shephard Dunphy, who were appointed last month when Renaissance was caught short by cash flow difficulties while operating too many product lines. That attracted 37 expressions of interest in either investing in or buying the business, and 10 parties taking a deeper look at the business. - NZME

Migration on the rise New Zealand annual net migration rose in October and remains high by historical standards although it’s lower than the record reached in July this year. Annual net migration rose to 70,700 in the year to October, from 70,300 in the same period a year earlier, Statistics New Zealand said. The figures show 72,100 non-citizens arrived in the year, while 1400 New Zealanders left. New Zealand has been experiencing record levels of net migration in recent years, which made rising immigration a key election issue. - NZME

Serko back in black Serko generated a first-half profit as the online travel booking software developer boosted trading revenue 30 per cent and reined in spending, and is stepping up plans to launch in new international markets. The Auckland-based company reported a net profit of $1.1 million, or 1 cent per share, in the six months ended September 30, turning around a loss of $2.1 million, or 3 cents, a year earlier. Trading revenue climbed to $9.1 million from $7 million a year earlier. - NZME

Wall Street runs hot Wall Street climbed to fresh record highs as better-than-expected corporate earnings such as from Medtronic bolstered optimism about the outlook for profits. In 1.29pm trading in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 0.8 per cent, while the Nasdaq Composite Index rallied 1 per cent. In 1.14pm trading, the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index gained 0.7 per cent. The S&P 500 reached a record high 2,600.11 earlier in the day, while the Nasdaq touched a new peak of 6861.07. Goldman Sachs raised its 2018 target for the S&P 500 to 2850 from 2500, citing an expansion in profits and valuations. Shares of Medtronic jumped, trading 5.3 per cent higher. - PA

Improve your home’s security There are some 80,000 reported burglaries in New Zealand each year, and Mid Canterbury is not immune. Many prospective home buyers are looking for a home that is secure, so good locks on both doors and windows, and good outdoor lighting will make your house more attractive to potential buyers. Although there is no absolute way to protect your home from break-ins, there are some simple things you can do to improve your security and deter would-be thieves. Good lighting is a great deterrent to crime. Floodlights or spotlights on the corner of your house are relatively inexpensive and easy to mount, and also improve the look of your home. Windows and doors are the would-be burglar’s main points of entry, and offer the most protection when they are visible, so good quality locks will discourage the amateur thief looking for an easy opportunity. Most older windows do not have locks, but are fitted with central latches which offer little protection. Locking versions of these catches, often described as sash window security locks, are available, and it is recommended these are fitted in pairs. An even better choice are sash stops. Tilting and sliding type slash windows are best fitted with both central locking catches and sash stops. The glass in louvre windows can be slid out in seconds, but if you don’t want to replace them, they can be secured in place using glue or silicone. Deadlock accessible windows and doors to ensure they cannot be opened easily even after the glass is broken and always remove keys from the locks. There are a couple of plants our customers regularly report that they find a little tricky to grow. Coriander is one. Watermelon is another. And the one that always surprises me is basil. Basil is such a great plant to have on hand. And there are so many different varieites available to try, I thought this month I’d share my advice on how to get the best out of your basil and move it off that tricky-to-grow list.

Basil loves the heat. So my first piece of advice, is look for the sunniest spot in your garden and that’s where you should put your basil. If the sunniest spot at your place is in your home (for example by a kitchen window), then try growing your basil there. Basil grows really well in pots and can easily be kept inside. When you’ve found the right spot to grow it just dig a little hole and plant. If you’re growing it in a pot I recommend using a good, general potting mix (available at your local garden centre). My second tip for successful basil is, pick it regularly. If you don’t pick it quick enough it might start to go to seed. If it

does, just pick off any developing flower heads to encourage it to stick to leaf growing. Next, basil needs water but it’s very important you don’t over-water it. Water it when you plant it and then water it regularly to encourage lots of leaf growth. But, and here’s the important advice, let it dry out between waterings – don’t let it stay wet. And my last piece of advice is, don’t just stick to sweet basil – try growing cinnamon, Thai, lemon, or one of the many other varieties. If you do all of the above, basil will quickly move to your list of favourite, lowmaintenance, easy-care plants.

Let stand for about 10 minutes until soft then drain. ■ Gently combine the beef, noodles and salad ingredients with the remaining dressing, season with salt and pepper and arrange in bowls. Arable farmers are returning to feed barley, with areas sown this season returning to historical levels. The latest Arable Industry Marketing Initiative (AIMI) survey, which was released earlier this week, showed the area sown in feed barley was likely to be up around 60 per cent on last season. Federated Farmers grain vice chairman Brian Leadley, who farms near Ashburton, said there had been a wariness among farmers in recent seasons towards the barley market. “But this present wet spring has actually prompted many to plant barley, as they’ve been unable to plant other vegetable crops in sodden conditions.” He said the drop-off in the area sown in feed barley in previous seasons may also have had something to do with reduced numbers in the dairy industry, which meant arable farmers may not have seen it as a strong contract option. The increase in barley sown this season had seen small drops

in areas sown in other crops, he said, rather than an increase in the overall arable area. Unsold stocks of cereal grain, which also included milling

wheat, feed wheat, malting barley, milling oats and feed oats, had reduced 53 per cent between July 1 and October 10, the AIMI survey showed.

Leadley said this was a positive sign as it showed grain consumption was moving forward, with the marketplace taking it up. “Farmers and the market are

meeting,” he said, adding that the signs for the industry as a whole were better this season than the previous two, which were indifferent. But it had still been a challenging season so far for Mid Canterbury arable farmers, Leadley said. “Coming out of the wet winter, the pressure was on,” he said. However, the ground had dried out, the winds of a few weeks ago had dropped off and irrigation water seemed to be holding well. “I think most (arable) farmers will be feeling fairly comfortable with where they’re at,” he said. However, the yields to come in April could still be compromised. Leadley said it would depend how late planting has occurred and whether spring crops had been firmly established – assuming they were resilient enough to get through the warm, dry spells to come.

Cervena brand gets update Twenty-four years after it was launched, the imagery and wording used to promote Cervena venison has been updated. P2P manager Innes Moffat said the logo has been refreshed and the tagline Natural, Tender, Venison has been replaced with Pure Freedom. The Cervena diamond shape and the stripes are still prominent on the packaging guidelines (gold for chilled, silver for frozen), but are now optional. “It’s an evolution, not a rebrand – the new look will be immediately recognised by anyone familiar with the original.” Duncan NZ marketing manager Glenn Tyrrell said the change is timely and follows a thorough review of how Cervena is marketed in the United States and Europe. In all markets, he said the primary outlets for Cervena for the marketing companies are foodservice and the primary targets are chefs. The new positioning reflects this. “Pure Freedom has a double meaning. It implies that the meat in the package comes from animals that are raised in a natural environment. “But most importantly it ties in with our messaging to chefs, particularly in Europe, that this is a versatile product that gives you the freedom to express your creativity and culinary expertise,” Tyrrell said. “It’s also why we didn’t include the word ‘venison’ in the tagline. Some of the feedback from the market was that Cervena should be in its own category and have no association with the strong traditions and cooking styles associated with game meats. “It allows us as marketers to build a story that aligns with where we are going in Europe. At the same time we have tested the new look with our established customers in the United States and they say it works perfectly for them.” Moffat said the five venison market-

ing companies agreed to review the imagery, messages and packaging guidelines that are used for Cervena as part of a push to use Cervena in a wider array of markets. “The companies now produce a much wider range of cuts and they market them to much more diverse and sophisticated markets than they did when the appellation was launched.” He said the packaging guidelines now require that the Cervena logo takes up at least 10 per cent of the face of the package – less than it did previously. “This allows the marketing company to make their branding and imagery more prominent, allowing Cervena to be used as an appellation – an endorsement of the company brand, much as Champagne is an endorsement of brands like Moet, Veuve Clicquot and Mumm.” The refreshed Cervena look is being rolled out progressively as the marketing companies update their promotional materials and packaging.

Passionate NZ dairy leader mourned

Michael Spaans, a huge loss to the NZ dairy industry.

t’s been a big couple of days for the New Zealand dairy industry, tinged with sadness as it deals with a great loss, but also with hope as it looks to the future. The sadness came from the death of Michael Spaans after he lost his battle with cancer on Monday evening. He served as a DairyNZ board member from 2008 and was chairman of the industry good organisation from November 2015. The Te Aroha dairy farmer, who was also a director of Fonterra from 2013 until ill-health forced him to step down from that role in January this year, was widely respected within the industry for his passion for farming and the leadership he brought to the industry. Fonterra chairman John Wilson, who knew the 54-year-old for many years, said Spaans, who also had farming interests in Canterbury, approached his illness in the same way he approached everything else – he was resolute, determined and did his utmost to continue on as normal. In fact, despite his illness, he remained as an ambassador for Fonterra and the dairy industry both in Wellington and on the international stage, only recently speaking on behalf of the Global Dairy Platform and all farmers at the United Nations in New York. It’s fair to say dairy farming was in Spaans’ blood, having grown up on his parents’ farm near Morrinsville before getting into the industry as a sharemilker and going on to assume a variety of leadership roles. He dedicated his life to improving farming in New Zealand, and, despite not knowing him personally, I’m sure he would have been proud of the Dairy Industry Strategy, aimed at setting the industry’s direction for the next decade, which was released only days after his death. It probably has his fingerprints all over it. A key plank of the strategy, which also looks at reducing carbon emissions, continued improvements in the area of animal welfare and attracting more young people into the industry, is addressing freshwater quality.

The later goal, among all the others, was one close to Spaans’ heart. As chairman of the Waikato Dairy Leaders Group, he was a great supporter of the group’s desire to improve the state of the Waikato River, and was right behind the region’s healthy rivers plan. However, he was also a firm believer in the good the industry brought to the country overall, and was just as dedicated to improving dairy farming profitability as he was to making gains in sustainability. By the sound of the reactions to come out following his death, the only things Spaans loved more than farming and New Zealand were his wife Kristina and his three children, aged between 16 and 22, who are utmost in the minds of all who knew him. Ashburton Bowling Club

Perhaps a minor matter, but the town is struggling at the moment to present a cared-for image, with many empty shops in the CBD and the changes in the management and planting of the Baring Square gardens for instance being a detrimental factor, so this strikes another untidy note. There will be no scheduled meetings of the Association in December and January but members of the public who are interested in matters affecting our town are invited to join us and have their say, at 7pm on the third Thursday of each month in the MSA meeting room nearest to Burnett Street. With good weather, bowling has been good in the last few weeks. Playing at Rakaia in the Murton Cup members Noeline MacKenzie, Noeline Woods, Leonie Spargo and Wendy Herriott gained 2nd place. Sat roll overs have had reasonable numbers and organized by Alison Gibbs and her team of helpers. Please be prompt to put your names in by 1 pm. Ladies played Bowman Cup Nov 6. 24 teams competed with 16 local club teams playimg. This was won by a Halswell team and Ashburton players took 2nd with N MacKenzie, Heather Goodall, L Spargo and W Herriott, 3rd place W Suttie, S Taylor, N Woods and M Watson, 4th D Gutberlet, D King, L Osborne and A Gibbs, 6th M Eder, R O’Sullivan, B Beck and J Knudson. Ashburton Electronic Organ and Keyboard Club November club night Bev French was our final player in for the year. We have had such a variety of music from the various members who have played before we start our musical programme for the evening, a tribute to the range of talents we have in our club. Janet welcomed our visitors, and I don’t think they would have been disappointed with the evening. Alan mentioned a bus trip to Oamaru, as he drives a bus. Put it on the table for next year. Barbara organised the programme and it rollicked along to mark the finish of a very successful and entertaining year of music. It is amazing that we rarely double up on our selection of music we choose to play, and do they dig them up. Gee there’s some nice songs around though. Lorraine was first up with her usual humorous recitation, this time on the shepherds that didn’t get around to watching their flocks by night, and about all the alternatives the M.A.F. could steady the ship by choosing to raise a range of other beasties. (I think I have it right, but it was good stuff) The men’s singing group came up twice to sing. They are always well received as they sing some really nice songs. (where does Audrey pick ‘em up). One that comes to mind “Where the praties grow” Janet plays a nice bracket I loved “Delta Dawn”. She was then joined by Shirley, Barbara, and Rose and played some super dance medleys. These guys are good. How can it not be when you add “Who threw the overalls in Mrs Murphy’s chowder”. Peter Brophy made his first solo up there on his lovely Yamaha PSR 970. Peter is one of the many ear players in the club, and he rattled out some beauties, “Downtown strutter’s ball” “Hey Mr Banjo” to name two. Shirley then on accordion. “The fields of Anthenry” is always lovely. The dance group came back and finished off a delightful evening. Thank you to the lovely hostesses out

Ashburton Garden Club The Ashburton Garden Club held their last meeting for the year on November 16 at the Senior Centre. We had a Rose Show in Conjunction with the regular monthly Competitions. A brief meeting was held before welcoming Carol Gunn who was the Guest Speaker. She gave an inspirational and enlightening hour of the ventures into growing Daffodils first, followed by Paeonies, and ultimately growing Saffron which is very labour intensive. One couldn’t do anything other than admire the Paeonies which she brought along with her. She also had a sample of Saffron for us to see and smell, which has a distinctive smell of its own. Many questions followed. As it was the last meeting for 2017, we had a special Afternoon Tea with a Christmas Theme. Next Year will begin on January 18th 2018 with Garden Walk to a few Gardens in Ashburton. Central Friendship Club President Roger presided over a good attendance of members and 3 visitors, apologies from 18 nembers. Two new members were inducted. An afternoon for members over 90 is to be held at the Sinclair Centre on December 7 at 2pm. Mini speaker Lance Innes brought up on a farm at Sheffield educated at St Andrews and worked on the family farm eventually buying a farm at Rokeby which he developed into a top cropping farm through irrigation. Now retired to Loc Lea.

Main Speaker Neil Allen introduced by Derek Prebble gave us an interesting talk on his life being brought up on the family farm on Beach Road educated at Ashburton schools eventually farming at Pendarves. He outlined the trials and tribulations of farming through droughts, storms, high interest rates (25%) etc all very challenging. He was a leading farmer with the development of irrigation in the area transforming the area into top cropping country. A vote of thanks was accorded him by John Kinvig. The meeting concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.

Grey Power Ashburton Inc. On Monday November 20 President Peter Thomas welcomed 60+ members to the annual Christmas meeting of Grey Power Ashburton. Apologies were received from; Trevor & Ann Gamblin; Greer Ricketts; Sheila moved their acceptance; seconded by Margaret – carried. Peter advised members that the shingles vaccine would be available free from general practices for those aged over 65 from April 1, 2018. The afternoon’s entertainment commenced with the singing of some of the old favourite Christmas carols accompanied by Margaret on the piano. Colin and Sheila then conducted the drawing of the raffle prizes, meat packs, and Coupland’s gift boxes. Peter then introduced the main entertainment for the afternoon, Lanae and Bruce Hill. This talented couple performed three original songs; the lyrics with a West Coast theme had been written by Lanae’s mother and were very well received. Natalie then announced the 10 winners in the free lucky draw, and Sheila handed out the envelopes containing grocery vouchers. Another round of Christmas carols followed, this time with Bernard on the organ. Lanae and Bruce returned to the stage and entertained with four more songs, concluding with Danny Boy and Jackson. Presentations of gift bags were made to Lanae, Bruce, Bernard and Margaret. Peter closed the meeting with a big thank you to those present for their donations to the local food banks and afternoon tea was served. Our next meeting will be held on Monday February 19, 2018.

England’s dynamic duo By RoB FoRsaith By the end of this summer, England are likely to boast the most prolific new-ball combination in the history of test cricket. It is a remarkable statistic that outlines the long-term dominance of Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad, but also the tourists’ reliance on them. Anderson and Broad have featured alongside each other in 97 tests, claiming a combined 748 wickets in those clashes. Some 15 more scalps together and they will surpass the iconic pace pairing of Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh. Both men will have a huge say in who wins the Ashes. Together they have created plenty of Australian collapses and bowled their side to Ashes victories, while both have also experienced crushing defeats in Australia. It’s not quite a case of ‘if Stuey don’t get you, Ando must’ but if England win the series opener then the two veterans will almost certainly have played leading roles. Former England bowling coach David Saker, now working in the same capacity for Australia, is full of praise for pair. “They’re the best two bowlers England have produced, stats wise anyway,” Saker told AAP, having caught up for a beer with them earlier this month. “Bloody good blokes.” Anderson and Broad’s partnership started in Wellington almost 10 years ago with a combined 10-wicket haul. There are plenty of similarities. Glenn Maxwell has been summoned as cover for David Warner but the vice-captain remains “very confident” he will be fully fit for the Ashes opener which begins in Brisbane on Thursday. Warner recovered from a stiff neck to bat in the nets yesterday during Australia’s final session before the first test. The aggressive opener twinged his neck while taking a high catch at the Gabba on Tuesday morning. He was in obvious discomfort when he attempted to bat on Tuesday, lasting only two throwdowns before trudging off to the rooms for treatment. “He’s very confident and he says he’ll be right to go,” cap-

tain Steve Smith said. “There’s a good chance someone will be in as cover but I’m not sure who at this stage ... they’re thinking about it at the moment. “He’ll be OK. It’s part and parcel of playing cricket. Inter Dominions locked in The worst-kept secret in harness racing was officially confirmed this week when Harness Racing Australia announced the future of the Inter Dominion Series. A nine-year rotation from 2018 through until 2026 was locked in place, with New Zealand to host the series three times in that period. Alexandra Park in Auckland will be the location for the 2019 and 2025 series’, while Addington in Christchurch will do the honours in 2022. In the remaining years it will rotate between Victoria and Sydney, starting with a Melbourne series next year. The current series, which kicks off in Perth on Friday night, is the third of a three-year block hosted by Racing and Wagering West Australia. Harness Racing New Zealand Chairman Ken Spicer is also the Chairman of the Inter Dominion Event Committee and he is thrilled that the future of the series was confirmed. “The co-hosts have developed a unique proposal which delivers certainty for this iconic event for at least the next nine years, and

Addington will host the Inter Dominions in 2022. beyond if other eligible bodies join the cycle in the second and third rotation phases,” Mr Spicer said. “The confidence that long term certainty of location, format and prizemoney levels provides the industry cannot be overstated,

and for that the co-hosts should be applauded”. Harness Racing New Zealand CEO Edward Rennell says the aim is to make New Zealand the place to be for good Australian horses in November and December. “We are really looking forward

to successful carnivals and to working with the two clubs to promote it as best we can. “Obviously lining the series up with the New Zealand Cup is a key focus and our aim will be to have the best horses from both countries here for eight weeks, right through until the Auckland Cup on New Year’s Eve. Speaking on behalf of the cohosts, HRNSW chief executive Mr John Dumesny said all parties were keen to ensure the Inter Dominion maintained its status as the flagship event for harness racing in Australasia. “The Inter Dominion has been part of the very fabric of harness racing in Australia and New Zealand for more than 80 years. The carnival’s history is littered with the feats of many of the greatest pacers to have graced our tracks,” Mr Dumesny said. “It is important this tradition continues and I am grateful to the co-hosts for working collaboratively to frame the proposal. “Further, I graciously thank the IDEC members for accepting the proposal which retains the traditional aspects of the Inter Dominion.” - NZHN

SMITH, Kenneth John (Ken) – On November 21, 2017. Passed away peacefully at Tuarangi Home, surrounded by his family. In his 93rd year. Dearly loved and devoted husband of Mary. Much loved father and father-in-law of Jillian and Peter George, Christine and Dougal Moore, Richard Smith and Louise Green. Postecoglou stands down An emotional Ange Postecoglou has turned down the opportunity to become the first man to coach the Socceroos at two World Cup finals. The 52-year-old announced yesterday that he was standing down as national team coach, a week after ensuring Australia would qualify for a fourth successive World Cup with a 3-1 victory over Honduras. It comes after weeks of speculation over Postecoglou’s future reached a crescendo with a crunch meeting with Football Federation chief executive David Gallop and chairman Steven Lowy.

Australia expected to whitewash the women’s Ashes Twenty20 series but a 2-1 loss has instead raised questions about their credentials ahead of next year’s World T20. Coach Matthew Mott has blamed missed opportunities for ending their successful Ashes campaign on a sour note. Tuesday’s finale was punctuated by four dropped catches to undo a blistering 117 not out by Beth Mooney. The final preparations are being put in place for this year’s edition of the Ruralco Longbeach Costal Challenge. The iconic event is entering its 11th year, with entries expected to reach 1200 by Sunday’s start time. Committee member Anna Jemmett said that after the debrief from last year’s event, the committee first met in March to start putting things in to place for this year’s event. “From there we met monthly until closer to the event where

we have been meeting weekly,” she said. Eight different events are on offer, including both cycling and walking/running events. The first event in 2007 was exclusively for mountain bikers, and attracted 259 competitors. Jemmett said that while the process of organising the event can be very stressful, it can also be a fun experience. “It probably sounds a bit corny but for me the best bit about doing it is seeing the kids smiling when they cross the finish line and when the competitive riders are out there to win

that is always pretty awesome,” she said. Once again the Challenge has attracted big names, including Kristine Marriott, who is an avid mountain biker and huge supporter of the local mountain biking scene and Anton Cooper, currently ranked number six in the world and a Commonwealth Games gold medallist in 2014. This year a new trophy will be introduced for a male and female up-and-comer in the mountain biking category. For the mountain bikers out there, three different events are on offer, 12km and 23km recrea-

tional rides, and a 35km crosscountry race, which has a prize of $500 for the quickest man and the quickest woman, with the event also offering NZ MTB Crown points. There are also two team cycling events on offer, being raced over 23km and 35km. The Challenge also incorporates an off-road half marathon, a 12km recreational run or scenic walk and 5km fun run/walk, with buggies permitted. The walks begin in a staggered fashion from 9am on Sunday, with the cycling events starting from 10am onwards.

Mumps hits All Blacks The All Blacks have defended their medical processes after a third player in their squad contracted the mumps. Flanker Ardie Savea has been in isolation since the team arrived in Cardiff ahead of Saturday’s test against Wales, having been diagnosed with a “mild” case of the viral disease. Assistant coach Ian Foster agreed the 24-year-old must have caught the mumps off team-mate Rieko Ioane. The third victim was Jack Goodhue, whose departure for the tour was delayed by a week to reduce any prospect of exposure to team-mates.
