Pre-enrol children to prevent overcrowding BY RUBY HARFIELD

Allenton School needs parents to preenrol their children early to prevent overcrowding in the next three years. The school will need more classrooms due to high roll growth but the Ministry of Education requires proof of these projections before they can provide funding. Principal Graham Smith said with a roll of 389, 10 more than this time last year, the school was near capacity. In the next few years they would need another two classrooms but the Ministry of Education would only provide funding for the additional space if the roll
was projected for the next three years. However, the current pre-enrolment list did not reflect the growth of students coming to the school each year, he said. The school’s Year 1 and 2 students made up nearly half the school and families tended to only enrol their children just before they turned five, Mr Smith said. The Ministry of Education would not provide funding based on estimations, they needed proof of pre-enrolments for the next three years, he said. Next year the school would survive with an increase but they would have to have a class based in the library by term three.
There is a junior class currently in the old dental clinic but that is not big enough for any more students. The school had been asking parents whose children turned five around the end of this year to wait until next year before their child started school, Mr Smith said. “That’s helped us.” The increase in growth might be to do with the growing economy and more families moving in the area and this was expected to continue, he said.
