Police do not believe that two suspicious house fires in Ashburton in less than a week are linked, but will be investigating the possibility.

Senior Sergeant Leigh Jenkins said there were no facts at this stage to support the idea that the Cambridge Street fire and the Peter Street fires were linked, but that they would be investigating the possibility.

“The Ashburton CIB are investigating the two fires to see if there are any potential links or suspects,” he said.

“The attending staff were clearly concerned enough to get the CIB involved, but at the moment it would seem co-incidental, and there are no facts at this stage to support the idea that they are linked.”

Firefighters were called to the empty house on Peter Street at around 8.30pm on Tuesday. Several crews battled the fire

and were there for around two hours.

Ashburton Fire Chief Alan Burgess said the fire was well involved when they began fighting it and that the style of the building made fighting the fire a challenge.

“It had false ceilings so it was a bit of a challenge to get the thing out,” he said.

Cop tackles school cross-country

There was a guarantee there would be no corner-cutting or bending of the rules at the Wakanui and St Joseph’s School cross-country yesterday with a special guest taking to the course.

Ashburton police school communities officer Fran Clark was invited to take part in the cross-country, a slightly different take on her usual work in the classroom with students.

“The Wakanui principal invited me out to do it and I said yes,” she said.

“I’ve done the Hampstead triathlon before and it is good for the kids to see police in a fun situation.”

Around 380 students from across the two schools came together for the cross-country, which returned to a traditional race style. Students raced around a 1km circuit on the Patton family farm on Wakanui School Road that involved a variety of terrain changes and wooden and hay obstacles to navigate.

Burgess said three house fires within a week was somewhat of an anomaly for firefighters.

“We have had nothing for yonks and then it all comes out at once, let’s hope that is the last of it,” he said.

Fire risk management officer Craig Chambers said he was able to determine that the fire had started in a bedroom in the house, but was unable to dis-

close how the fire had started due to the ongoing police investigation.

“I can say that it is suspicious and that there is a total loss of the property,” he said.

“The police are enquiring now so it is over to them, I have given them all my findings.”

Neighbours who were standing by on the street as the firefighters worked said they believed the house had been empty for about a month.

Some had been evacuated from their homes by police over asbestos and smoke concerns, and some also said they believed there had been drugs

used in the house in the past.

The second suspicious house fire in Ashburton occurred last Thursday.

Firefighters were called to the Cambridge Street address at around 10am, with a total of four crews attending the scene.

Police have been appealing for anyone who may have seen any suspicious behaviour in Cambridge Street and the Wellington Street area between 9.30am and 10am on Thursday, May 16 and who may have seen something suspicious or someone acting suspiciously.

Another house fire in Mid Canterbury which occurred last week was deemed to be non-suspicious, and is believed to have been caused by a fireplace.

Firefighters were called to the Hatfield Overdale Road property on Wednesday last week at 2.10pm.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said the house was well ablaze when fire crews arrived.

Crews from Ashburton, Rakaia, Pendarves and Lauriston responded to the fire.

A lucky player who won $500,000 over 10 years is among the Ashburton people to enjoy Instant Kiwi wins over the past 30 years.

Instant Kiwi is celebrating three decades of scratching, playing and winning and the figures show plenty of Mid Canterbury people have been among the winners.

A class of Year 9 Ashburton College students took centre stage in the school’s auditorium this week as they presented sports science projects to their peers, family and staff.

As part of the school’s new innovation programme, the students worked on projects across a range of subjects, including social studies, science and physical education.

This year the college introduced a new approach to learning at Year 9, based on developing students’ resilience, creative problem solving and communication skills. It is designed to prepare students for a workplace that is constantly changing.

About half of the students at that level are working in classes using the new project-based learning model that sees the integration of some subjects, rather than the traditional, standalone subject model.

Students and their parents decided whether they became

part of the integrated learning class.

College staff were also given the option of being part of the pilot programme and acting head of science James Aulsford said it was a choice he was glad he had made.

“This is where we need to head in the future with education and as teachers we need to learn to de-silo ourselves too, I’m a teacher of skills, not just science,” he said.

This week’s presentation of term one work was a good example of students working across several subjects and teachers from several areas working together on one project, Aulsford said.

“This became a multiple stranded, cross curriculum project.”

The students worked individually or in small groups to explore a sport they were familiar with, looking at how it met the needs of a community, how the community supported that sport, how it boosted physical, mental and social well-being.

Two experts in coping with tragedy will be sharing their experience and knowledge in Ashburton next month in an event where they will talk about the importance of resilience and the ability to cope with the speedbumps in life.

Jake Bailey, the Christchurch Boys’ High School student who delivered his end of year speech from a wheelchair while undergoing treatment for Burketts non-Hodgkinson lymphoma, will speak about his experience and the things living with cancer has taught him.

He has written a book, What Cancer Taught Me, and has been in remission since 2016.

Clinical psychologist Julie Zarifeh, who lost her husband to cancer and her son in a rafting accident, is the second speaker. She works with the New Zealand Institute of Wellbeing and Resilience but also knows first hand the resilience needed to cope with tragedy.

The pair will speak about survivorship and the important role resilience plays in helping people cope with life’s tough events.

The event is an Ashburton Cancer Society initiative in response to the growing demand they are seeing for emotional support, counselling and mental health services for their clients, clients’ families and the wider community.

The two speakers will also be giving their time to free events at Ashburton College.

Fire victims overwhelmed by response

Three flatmates have been blownaway with the public response after losing their house and beloved dog in a fire last week.

Anna Haywood, Ashleigh Bell and Tiffany Lineham had left the Hatfield property just after 1pm on Wednesday and were called less than an hour later, to be told the house was in flames.

“The fire was called in at around 2.10pm by the boss’s wife and she called me straight after,” Haywood said.

“I called her straight back to ask if she could get Sam (the dog), out of the laundry but she couldn’t get near it.

“We just had to wait for the firefighters to finish but I knew that Sam was gone.”

“They never got insurance so that is why we set up the page just to help them replace their stuff.”

Haywood said she had been blown away with the support they had received, even from strangers.

“We have received so many messages, there have been so many people that have dropped off household items,” she said.

“We have just had so much support and it has made it a lot easier.”

The majority of the house was destroyed in the fire, with only the garage and a small section of

the house next to it left standing.

A small number of items were able to be salvaged from the remnants of the house.

“Luckily the firefighters were able find his (Sam’s) remains so we got to take him home and bury him,” she said.

“I have had him for seven years, right from when he was a puppy.

“I always said that when he died it would be the most awful thing that could happen but I have just been so busy sorting things I haven’t had time to take it all in, but I think once everything is sorted and I sit down it will hit me.”

Haywood said she was currently staying with a friend until temporary accommodation could be found, which she will stay in until the house can be rebuilt.

The multi dimensional part of my character has been very enjoyable, he goes from being the person who knows the pecking order within the church and plays it right down the middle but is also a little bit stuffy and bored.

He then becomes someone who embraces the changes and

almost becomes a maniac-like Barry White type character who is completely turned around.

Are there any similarities between yourself and this character, and if so, what are they?

I think the way he gets so enthused and almost becomes a born-again Christian through a love of music. It’s actually been a great pleasure to play a character like this.

What have been the highlights and lowlights, challenges and achievements, of rehearsals so far?

I wouldn’t say there are any real lowlights, but it has been tough getting back into for a guy of my age and getting used to all the dancing and changes. In one scene alone I have five changes.

Highlights, there have been plenty.

I’ve enjoyed those little moments where there have been deviations from the actual script and we’ve all fallen over laughing.

In brief Missing tramper Police are searching for overdue tramper 36-year-old Timothy Clements of Rangiora who is missing in the Ashburton Lakes area. Timothy began a walk on Te Araroa Track towards Lake Emily on May 18, dropped off at the start of the track on Double Hill Run Road. He was due to be picked up at Lake Emily on Monday morning, May 20, but did not arrive. Police were notified that Timothy was missing around 4.45pm on Monday. 25 LandSAR volunteers were searching in the area yesterday with two LandSAR dog handlers and a helicopter.

Police would like to hear from anyone who was on the track over the weekend or anyone who may have seen Timothy. Anyone with information should call police on 105, referencing 190522/8605.

Police car rammed A man is due in court after allegedly running a red light and driving into a cop car before crashing into another vehicle in Hamilton yesterday. Police attempted to stop the car but it is alleged to have hit the patrol car before fleeing. It crashed soon after into another vehicle. Neither driver was injured. A 41-yearold was arrested and taken into custody. The man was due to appear in the Hamilton District Court yesterday facing charges of reckless driving, driving while disqualified, unlawfully takes a motor vehicle, failing to stop and assault using a vehicle as a weapon.

Jobseekers given boost

Eight of Ashburton’s young jobseekers have been given a boost towards entering the workforce, thanks to an MSD employment programme that wraps up today.

The Youth Engagement Plan (YEP) takes young people, aged 18-24, who are work ready but who are struggling to enter the workforce and provides them with a toolkit of skills that will get them across the line and into employment.

MSD tutor Pete Vink works with groups of young jobseekers across Canterbury in the YEP programme and said it had a proven track record with people who were applying for positions but just missing out on securing jobs.

The jobseekers are referred to the course by their work brokers. Some have been in employment while others are still looking for their first job.

The course covers CV preparation, writing cover letters, interview skills, site safe certificates, drivers’ licences, and in-

cludes sessions with a number of employers who talk through employment opportunities, workplace culture, interview techniques and recruitment processes.

“I ask a wide range of em-

ployers in so the young people will understand the different employment options and the work cultures and environments,” Vink said.

Students also work on a strength finder programme that helps them identify their key strengths that they can then highlight in a job application.

“If an employer knows this they’ll be able to link them with a job that’s appropriate to those strengths,” he said.

If there are people on the course who do not have a drivers’ licence, YEP will fund this or pay for driving lessons, and students also complete a first aid certificate.

“We pay for everything. It’s a great opportunity and it buoys them up. Saome of these employers are pretty inspiring speakers,” he said.

The course wraps up with a graduation lunch and every student’s progress, from course to workplace, is followed over many weeks post course by their work brokers.

Pets, pies and phones on police radar NZME If you eat, drink or use your phone behind the wheel in Canterbury, chances are you’ll soon see flashing lights.

For the remainder of the year, police in the district will regularly target drivers who are not paying full attention to the road.

The aim of the crackdown is to reduce the number of crashes caused by mobile phone use and other distractions, Sergeant Alex Pickover said.

“There have been tickets issued for using a cellphone while driving, we’ve been doing checkpoints around the Selwyn District in relation to cellphone usage.”

For using a mobile phone while driving, drivers can get an $80 fine and 20 demerit points.

It is not illegal to eat or drink behind the wheel, but if a car

crashes as a result of not paying attention to the road, the driver could be charged with careless driving or careless driving causing injury.

Distractions can also include music devices, food and drink, driving information screens, other passengers or scenery, he said.

“It’s a distraction because you’re not in proper control of the vehicle,” Pickover said.

According to the New Zealand Transport Agency, pets can also cause distraction.

To crack down on distracted drivers, officers will patrol on foot to look for distracted drivers, and then pass on the offending vehicle’s details to a patrol car nearby to pull the driver over.

The latest statistics breakdown on distracted drivers from 2017 was a “big concern”.

“When we see people looking down towards the lap, it’s obviously a sign that they’re on their phone. It’s not rocket science,” Pickover said.

He advised drivers to switch off mobile phones or to turn it on “do not disturb” while driving.

“Make sure the radio is in the right station before pulling off. If you’re unfamiliar with the route you’re going on check on a map before you’re starting the journey,” Pickover said.

“If people are struggling to concentrate because of passengers, ask them to settle down or quiet down.”

Pickover also encouraged businesses to provide employees with Bluetooth devices in fleet cars.

Parliamentary staff member stood down NZME A parliamentary staff member has been stood down following a formal complaint about a historical assault of a sexual nature.

Speaker Trevor Mallard said a complainant came forward voluntarily and laid the complaint yesterday with the general manager of Parliamentary Service.

It followed Mallard’s radio interview yesterday, in which he said it was possible that an alleged rapist was still working in the parliamentary premises.

A Parliamentary Service investigation has started and the alleged offender has been stood down.

“I am satisfied that the Parliamentary Service has removed a threat to the safety of women working the parliamentary complex,” Mallard said.

“I want to thank the staff member [who laid the complaint] who has come forward .... This is obviously a very traumatic time for that individual, and will also be the case for other individuals, other women, who are involved.”

The complaint followed a turbulent morning in which widespread safety concerns prompted Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to call an urgent meeting to seek assurances about the safety of the parliamentary workplace.

Yesterday Mallard and independent reviewer Debbie Francis released a review of bullying and harassment at Parliament, which revealed 14 people who said they had been the victim of a sexual assault in the parliamentary workplace.

“Three of the alleged incidents disclosed to me in interviews were in my view extremely serious and some appeared to be part of a multi-year pattern of predatory behaviour,” Francis said in the report.

Yesterday Mallard characterised the three incidents as rape, adding that he believed the perpetrator still worked in Parliament.

Supporters of an unsuccessful presidential candidate clashed with security forces in the Indonesian capital on yesterday, burning vehicles and throwing rocks at police, which responded with tear gas and rubber bullets.

The protesters tried to force their way into the downtown offices of the election supervisory agency late Tuesday and clashes have continued since then. National Police spokesman Muhammad Iqbal said the majority of protesters had come from outside Jakarta and nearly 60 suspected provocateurs had been arrested.

Local media reported several deaths and dozens of injured among protesters. The governor of Jakarta, Anies Baswedan, who is aligned with losing presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto, said there were six deaths though there has been no official confirmation.

Indonesia’s Election Commission on Tuesday said President Joko Widodo had won a second term with 55.5 per cent of the vote in the April 17 election.

Subianto, an ultra-nationalist former special forces general, has refused to accept the results and declared himself the winner. His campaign plans to challenge the election

in the Constitutional Court.

They allege massive fraud in the world’s third-largest democracy but have provided no credible evidence.

The government had deployed some 50,000 police and soldiers in Jakarta in anticipation of protests, said Jakarta police spokesman Argo Yuwono. Many residents have left the city and parts of the downtown are closed to traffic with the election supervisory agency and Election Commission barricaded with razor wire.

In the past week, authorities have arrested three pro-Sub-

ianto activists on suspicion of treason, said a national police spokesman Dedi Prasety. They included Sunarko, a retired general and former commander of Indonesia’s special forces who uses a single name. Police allege there was a plot to seize crucial government buildings in Jakarta.

Subianto and members of his campaign team had said they would mobilize “people power” during days of street protests. The former general has also called on supporters to refrain from violence.

Subianto, who also lost to Widodo in 2014, ran a fearbased campaign, emphasising what he sees as Indonesia’s weakness and the risk of exploitation by foreign powers or disintegration. He aligned himself with hard-line Muslim groups and won massive majorities in conservative provinces such as Aceh, which follows Shariah law, but was defeated by Widodo in the president’s populous East Java and Central Java strongholds.

Widodo’s campaign highlighted his progress in poverty reduction and improving Indonesia’s inadequate infrastructure with new ports, toll roads, airports and mass rapid transit.

Five die in Honduran plane crash NZME Four Americans and a Canadian pilot were killed when a small plane went down off the coast of Roatan island in Honduras, officials have said.

Armed Forces spokesman Jose Domingo Meza confirmed the nationalities of those who died in the weekend crash.

The Piper Cherokee Six plummeted into the Atlantic shortly after takeoff from the popular tourist destination of

Roatan en route to the port of Trujillo. The military said in a statement that rescue boats with police divers and firemen recovered four bodies within minutes of the crash, and transported another to a hospital, where he died shortly after of internal injuries.

The US State Department also confirmed the deaths of four US citizens and Global Affairs Canada confirmed that a Canadian also had died. They did not release names.

Honduran authorities identified the pilot as Patrick Forseth, a Canadian national who developed tourism projects in the Trujillo Bay area.

The news bureau Global Affairs Canada confirmed the Canadian national was onboard, telling CTV news “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the Canadian citizen who died in a tragic plane crash in Roatán islands, Honduras.

Court allows parents to use dead man’s sperm NZME Months after West Point cadet Peter Zhu died from injuries sustained in a tragic skiing accident – and lost what his parents said was his dream to have children of his own – a US judge has ruled that his parents may use his frozen sperm to create a child.

New York State Supreme Court Justice John Colangelo ruled last week that Zhu’s parents, Yongmin and Monica Zhu, may decide what to do with their son’s sperm, including whether to use it for “procreative purposes”.

The parents filed a court petition in March to retrieve

their only son’s sperm before he was removed from life support, calling it their “one and only chance of fulfilling Peter’s wishes and preserving his incredible legacy” and to carry on the family name.

“At this time, the court will place no restrictions on the use to which Peter’s parents may ultimately put their son’s sperm, including its potential for procreative purposes,” the judge wrote in his ruling.

“As far as the court can discern, no such restrictions are mandated by either New York or federal law.”

Zhu, from Concord, California, had expressed a desire to have a family of his own, his

parents said.

The 21-year-old senior at the US Military Academy at West Point in New York had discussed his dreams with his parents, telling them he wanted to be a father and raise them on a ranch, despite their teasing him that such a brood would be expensive, his parents wrote in their March 1 petition.

For a senior class assignment, Zhu recently wrote that he wanted to get married “before 30,” have kids and “become a career officer in the military,” according to court records.

But Art Caplan, a professor of bioethics and head of the

division of medical ethics at New York University’s school of medicine, said the case is “an ethical quagmire.”

Regarding the Zhu case, Caplan said he disagrees with the judge’s decision because he does not believe parents should have control over their children’s reproduction. He added that he thinks such allowances should be made only for partners or spouses.

In February, Zhu was gravely injured in a skiing accident on the West Point ski slope, fracturing his spinal cord, according to court documents.

Days later, on February 27, the 21-year-old was declared brain dead.

During an appearance on The Talk on Tuesday to promote her new Netflix melodrama What/If, host Sheryl Underwood asked Zellweger if she’d be interested in doing a fourth film in the beloved rom-com franchise, and what her character would hypothetically be up to. “Bridget Jones: The Menopause,” Zellweger joked. “No, I know Helen’s [Fielding] written the book, and I love this character. Volunteer firefighters are legends T

he Ashburton District is blessed with a group of men – and a few women – who go above and beyond for their community.

Those people make up the district’s volunteer fire brigades.

They turn out at all hours of the day and night whenever their pagers signal a fire call. They ask for nothing in return, they do what’s needed and they do it for their community.

Take the Ashburton crews over the past week – house fire after house fire mixed in with the odd false alarm, medical assist and minor call out. That’s just part of their job and largely we all take what they do for granted.

hold down full-time jobs or run their own businesses. Every time there’s a fire call during working hours, they down tools and run or drive to the fire station. They never know when they’ll return and that means having the right staff who will carry on.

The employers who have firefighters on their staff deserve a medal. For them it must be easier to say no, than to agree

to having a staff member who, in some weeks, disappears for several hours most days.

For them, that means extra costs for the staff needed to cover a firefighter’s absence and yet there are plenty of those employers around town who clearly see having a firefighter on staff as doing their bit for the community they do business in.

If the calls come after work hours then family, meals, social occasions and sports events are abandoned and firefighters head to the station to do whatever is needed.

Families of firefighters not only have to deal with a family member who’s likely to disappear at a moment’s notice, but

they also have to live with knowing that family member is walking into a potentially dangerous situation at every call out.

Yes, we all appreciate what our firefighters do, but odds on, we probably also take it for granted. We know if we need them they’ll always be there – won’t they?

The Ashburton District is fortunate.

We’ve rarely faced the problem that occurs in many parts of the country where the first port of call in a fire is a volunteer brigade woefully short on man, or woman, power.

Our district’s rural brigades may struggle during working hours to have enough fire-

fighters on hand but after work hours, the numbers are usually fine.

And in Ashburton, being a volunteer appears to be a sought after position, often one that runs in families. And thank God for that. It means we can all sleep at night knowing our property is in good hands.

The string of house fires our district has experienced over the past few days will have taxed fire fighting resources to the limit. Sleep will be a sought after commodity by some and yet, if the siren sounds, they don’t say “I’m too tired” they just go.

To all our volunteer firefighters a big shout out. You guys are legends.

Eighteen months in I

t’s now been 18 months since our coalition government took office and, halfway through the political term, we’ve achieved a huge amount.

I’ve heard from many people here in Mid Canterbury about how our policies are already making a difference for them and their families, whether that’s through higher wages, extra support with the weekly bills, or help with heating through the winter.

But our government is also committed to tackling the longterm challenges – the big issues like ending child poverty.

One of our government’s goals is to make New Zealand the best place in the world to be a child.

We know a large part of this is making sure every child can get a great education, which is why this month we announced that

we are training and supporting more than 3000 additional teachers over the next four years, to meet demand for a growing number of students.

Addressing the teacher shortage is a vital part of our work to rebuild our education system.

Kids, parents, and teachers will all benefit from having more teachers in classrooms.

We have also funded 600 Learning Support Co-ordinators, so that children with diverse learning needs get the support they need.

You told us students need

modern, fit-for-purpose classrooms that are warm and dry.

Comfortable, healthy spaces are vital to students’ learning.

That’s why we’re building hundreds of new classrooms across New Zealand.

The large investment in Ashburton College is testament to that with 60 new classrooms on the horizon, along with other, much-needed improvements.

No longer will the library need buckets when it rains!

One of my favourite things to do as an MP is to get out and visit our local schools; chatting with the principals about the school’s wonderful achievements, the challenges they are facing, being put through my paces by very on to it young students and sharing a cuppa with the teachers in the staff room.

I am always happy to come and see what is happening in

our school communities.

We’ve lifted wages with the average wage rising $65 a week, 70,000 new jobs, and the minimum wage rising to $17.70 an hour.

We’ve made tax fairer by making multinationals pay their fair share.

And we’ve supported businesses to grow with research and development tax credits to help drive innovation.

There’s plenty more to do, of course. But I’m proud what the government has achieved so far.

Cantabs feature strongly in awards NZME Three Canterbury farmers are among the finalists for this year’s New Zealand Ewe Hogget Competition.

Springston’s Claire Garrett has been selected as a finalist in the coopworth section for the second year running and has been joined by two Hawarden farming couples.

Stuart and Jo Fraser are finalists in the composite breed section, while Iain and Jacelyn Wright are finalists in the fine wools breed section.

Being chosen as a finalist was a big surprise for the Frasers, who took over the family farm at Mt Benger, near Hawarden, only two years ago.

Their ewe hogget flock of 1800 was part of a 14,500-stock unit sheep and beef farm on 2800ha of rolling hill country and flats.

The Frasers’ ewe hoggets were sired by a North Island-bred romney ram and a longdown ram bred nearby at Scargill.

“The longdowns are bred for the lambing weights and percentages, rather than the wool,’’ Fraser said.

“We were lucky enough to inherit the genetics going back four generations.

“We’ve never had to buy in ewes.’’

The main mob of ewes was lambed at the end of August, while

the hoggets lamb in mid-September, with the aim of finishing all the lambs on farm before conditions got too dry over the summer.

Stuart is the fourth generation Fraser to farm at Mt Benger, since his great-grandfather bought the

farm in 1923, and there were already expectations three-monthold son Jock would continue the family tradition.

The winners of the 23rd annual competition will be announced at a dinner at the Chateau on the

Park in Christchurch on June 26.

Garrett is up against Winton farmer Kevin McCallum, while the Frasers are up against Lumsden couple Trevor and Karen Humphries and the Wrights are finalists along with Middlemarch couple

Andrew and Lynnore Templeton.

There are also finalists in the crossbred, perendale and romney sections.

An overall winner and five special awards will also be presented on the night.

All 300 farms identified as urgent priority properties as part of a surge in mycoplasma bovis response activity have now been contacted.

The latest stakeholder update from the Ministry for Primary Industries said 28 farms were working with the response to get information on risky animal movements before a decision could be made if their risk of exposure was high enough to require a notice of direction (NOD).

A NOD aimed to prevent further spread and did not restrict movement of stock or goods on to the farm, but cattle could not move off the property without a permit.

So far, 101 urgent priority NODs had been given out and 115 farms would require active surveillance.

There were still 400 low-medium priority farms that needed to be contacted over the next few weeks. Very few of those properties were expected to be placed under a NOD and most would require active surveillance.

There were risk movements that were now being found from the most recently confirmed properties.

Even though the surge work was complete, the response team would have to continue to contact farmers about newly-found risk movements, as part of its “business as usual’’, the update said.

‘Worst-ever’ SC harvest

Many arable farmers in South Canterbury are saying wet weather over the summer has resulted in their worst-ever harvest.

Jeremy Talbot, South Canterbury Federated Farmers arable chairman, said crop yields for wheat and barley were less than 50 per cent of what was expected for many farmers.

“As far as peas are concerned there’s only one word for it, disaster.

“The crops just failed. Flying over South Canterbury in December I saw 50 per cent of paddocks were written off and what was remaining was of poor quality.’’

He said wet conditions made it more difficult than what would be experienced in a drought.

“Farmers had to keep spraying and, for those relying on contractors, some farmers had to stand in line and some didn’t get done.

“There was a crop of wheat near Arowhenua that could have been a world record crop, with 12 to 14 tonnes per hectare. The farmer is a very good farmer but this has been his worst harvest in his whole career.

“He did under six tonnes and couldn’t make a crop. That was

being repeated all around South Canterbury.’’

Talbot said farmers had also expressed concern about the cereal seed condition used to sow this season’s crops.

“One line of seed only had a 34 per cent emergence and many more were below what should have been.’’

There are around 150 arable

farmers between the Waitaki and Rangitata rivers and while lowland farmers were badly affected, those in upland areas in the Hakataramea Valley and around Albury reported good yields.

“Some there said it was their best ever.’’

Talbot said a lot of arable farmers would struggle to make a profit and it came at a bad time.

When attending the South Island Agricultural Field Days at Kirwee in March he found many farmers felt deeply aggrieved by the government’s Tax Working Group policies which have now been shelved.

“Farmers feel they are being picked on and blamed for everything.

“The average return on capi-

tal for farmers is 2 to 2.5 per cent when making a profit. This year it will be less than 1 per cent.

“No business in town could operate like that. The only thing that keeps farmers going is equity in their land and property.’’

Talbot said he was stepping down as South Canterbury Federated Farmers arable chairman but would remain involved.

Chorus hit by downgrade

Chorus has been hit by a downgrade from outperform to neutral

The move stems from concerns that the Commerce Commission is being over-optimistic about UFB fibre’s prospects and the cost of capital as it mulls how to set regulated pricing and in turn potentially too tough on Chorus as it considers where to set a revenue cap and other criteria under new regulations.

Analysts Matthew Henry and Matt Dunn have also shaved the network operator’s 12-month target price from $6.25 to $5.65.

A major overhaul of the Telecommunications Act, which will kick off on January 1, 2022 (following the ComCom’s successful request for a two-year delay), will see Chorus subject to an annual revenue cap – as, for example, listed lines company Vector is in the power sector.

The wholesale price of Chorus’ “anchor” (or mass market) UFB fibre plan will also be regulated.

It will also have to meet mini-

mum quality standards.

The ComCom has just released an “emerging views paper” – a key step in the once-in-a-generation process of resetting the rules of the telecommunications game.

Telecommunications Commissioner Stephen Gale said the revised legislation is designed to stop Chorus (and smaller regional operators NorthPower Fibre and Enable Networks) “from earning excessive profits at the expense of network quality and consumers”.

Retail workers at department store chain Farmers are preparing to walk off the job for a series of strikes in a bid to increase their wages and working conditions.

The first of a series of planned strikes over the next two weeks kicked off yesterday, with low-wage earners set to picket outside stores in Henderson, St Lukes, NorthWest and LynnMall shopping centres in Auckland, and in Paraparaumu and Dunedin.

Strike action will affect 40 of the retail chain’s 56 stores.

First Union says low-wage workers had voted to take strike action across the country to “demonstrate to customers why their employer deserves an F for performance”.

The F reference links to news of the retail chain last month receiving an F grade in Tearfund’s ethical fashion report which ranks retailers and fashion brands on their efforts to prevent child and forced labour, supply chain transparency and worker rights.

Tali Williams, secretary for retail, finance and commerce at First Union, said Farmer’s pay rates were an embarrassment for a company that positioned itself on “family values”.

“Minimum wages are not enough to live on. Farmers is well behind other major retailers with its pay rates,” Williams said.

“What’s worse is that Farmers is one of the only major retailers with a performance pay system that actively keeps wages down.”

About 80 per cent of Farmers workers were on an hourly rate of less than the prescribed living wage of $20.55, Williams said.

Most staff started on the minimum wage of $17.70 per hour and

Farmers’ “unfair” performance review system made it difficult to progress from that, she said.

“The strike action staff are taking, along with wearing T-shirts and stickers that call for liveable wages, will raise awareness. Farmers needs to listen to their own family values and return to the bargaining table with a Living Wage for workers.”

Farmers chief financial officer, Michael Power, said the retailer was disappointed that First Union was taking action.

“We are currently arranging mediation (to which the union has agreed) to assist us in breaking the current impasse,” Power said.

“We have been in bargaining with First Union, which currently represents approximately 25 per cent of our retail staff, since March 2019.

“We do not agree with what the union has said about Farmers in its media statements.”

First Union said the union represents 40 per cent of Farmers’ work-

force. Farmers workers have been striking for higher wages and better working conditions since last year with little resolve.

Last year hundreds of Farmers workers across the country undertook industrial action and walked off the job to picket. Strike action ranged from one hour to five hours and affected around 55 stores.

First Union said beauty, sales and service assistants typically found it hard to get a pay increase – not even through its performance review system – which workers had branded as unfair.

“It’s disappointing to see Farmers, a company steeped in so much New Zealand history as an iconic Kiwi brand, lagging so far behind when businesses are beginning to acknowledge they need to pay wages that workers can thrive on, not just survive,” Williams said.

Farmers is owned by the James Pascoe Group, which also owns and operates jewellery chains Pascoes and Goldmark, along with homeware chain Stevens.

Serves 4-6 1 Waitoa chicken breast, cooked 4 large potatoes 1t Italian herb mix Olivado Organic extra virgin olive oil 3 bacon rashers, cooked 1C fresh basil leaves 1C mozzarella cheese 1/2 C cheddar cheese 1/2 C cherry tomatoes 1T balsamic vinegar ■■ Preheat oven to 200°C. ■■ Cut the potatoes into wedges then scatter onto a baking tray.

Sprinkle over the herb mix, drizzle with oil and season, then toss to coat the wedges. Place in the oven and cook for 2025 minutes or until the wedges are almost cooked through and crispy.

Ashburton Electronic Organ and Keyboard May club night Vice President Bev (Stevens that is) took over from John and thanked Don for playing in. Nice music Don. We had a minute silence for the passing of Janet Moore, then Colin (Crone that is) who organised the evening’s programme, introduced us to some of his former Geraldine Ukulele club players (who called themselves “Geraldine ukulele jam”) who had agreed to entertain us for the evening.

I must say John (Harris that is) their bass was nothing like our skiffle group bass. The real McCoy. Up there in all its splendour.

They gave us two brackets during the evening, and kept us entertained, with a variety of talent by individual players.

Irene, and Peter Thomas, on accordions, and Veller Smales on piano, gave us a full workout of tunes, which went down well. There was a fair bit of music played there, all in one sitting. Well done guys. New combinations within the club always go down well.

Noel and Sylvia entertained on Piano and guitar.

“Danny boy” always goes down well.

John Waugh showed us what he could do on his two whistles, with the history of the music explained.

Tunes from Ireland and the Shetlands. If you didn’t know it was a whistle it could have passed for a flute (that may be an insult to a flutist, I don’t know).

Bev threw in a couple of jokes which get a real laugh.

Colin then told of a butterfly cake recipe, and just what went in them, which apparently was written in miniature font on the package.

Noel, the Jammers guitarist played for us, the group sure have a variety of talent there, and combine very well. They returned for their second bracket, and among many other songs, played and sang “Waltzing Matilda’ and Klara showed us what she could do with the Wobble board.

She had us in stitches, trying to get the wobbley sound in between the bars. Looked like hard work, and it was only me, which made me laugh even more, but it sounded like they were losing their bathwater. Oh dear it was funny.

Their final song was “The rose” Gosh it was nice.

Well done, Klara, Sylvia, Colin, Lynette, Margaret, Jenny, Val, and Noel.

Noel concluded the evening with a lovely guitar solo.

Thank you Colin, and to the Geraldine Jam crew.

Ashburton Garden Club The Ashburton Garden Club held their monthly meeting on May 16 at the Senior Centre with 28 members in attendance including a new Member who was welcomed into the Club.

After a brief business discussion, Audrey Leath introduced Daryl Nelson as the Guest Speaker for the day. He gave us an overview of his work life beginning in the 1960s at Millichamps with an emphasis on landscaping places such as Queens Drive, Argyle Park Ashburton Hotel, to name just a few. He and his wife Judith, moved to Rakaia where they stayed for 28 years, having established a Nursery of Radiata pines for forestry, etc., growing 3.5 million in that time.

Moving back to Ashburton in 2000, they continued landscaping in and around the Ashburton area and beyond the Mid Canterbury region. Daryl purchased a revolutionary machine manufactured in France, which was able to bury stones in deep trenches yet at the same time tilled the soil. It was called a Rota Dairon and was instrumental in planting 30,000 Daffodils for the Ashburton Parks in the Domain and other areas in the County.

The topic changed to pruning trees, with valuable advice of employing professionals to deal with problematic issues, well worth the expense. We enjoyed the light hearted yet interesting speech, he was thanked for coming and invited to join us for afternoon tea.

Ashburton Golf Club We had four cracking semi-finals last Saturday for the Watson Cup and the Newton Trophy.

Continuing in my expert tipping form I was once again four from four, albeit four from four wrong.

Firstly Dylan and Ryan came out on top in a ding dong battle against John and Eric.

The young Stoddart boys will be full of confidence going into the final against Greig and Brendon, who managed to bamboozle Wilson and John with superior match play cunning and underhand skull duggery to snatch a finals berth off them. This will be a great final with Spud, Davo and Dylan having around two shots between them, I think Ryan holds the key, he should have around 7 shots off Davo.

Too close to call, but whoever wins will be well deserved as they have both beaten some great pairings to get there. Good luck to all.

In the Newton semis Nurse Gladys Emmanuelle kept Arkright tied to the bed, some phony excuse about being sick, so Hamish had to take on Brent and Jason on his own. The boys were in no mood for any shocks and calmly went about their business and finished the game in a very professional manner.

They will now face Paddy and Pat in the final (Yep I know! I’m as shocked as you are).

The boys in green showed no respect at all to club legend and Patron Bill and his left sider Alan. This game went down to the 18th after Alan trumped Paddy’s birdie with an Eagle on the 17th to prolong it. Tough school! This final will be a re match of the qualifying round where these four played together and could not be separated after 18 holes, and I think everything is pointing to the same close game again.

None match players will have a stroke round this Saturday, come on down and join in the fun.

On Sunday we are back in the Pennants groove.

Hamish and the Holmes boys are playing at home against Timaru as are Hoppy and his Redpath gang.

So nothing short of two convincing wins will be allowed there. Shane and the Moyes team are at Methven playing Highfield. I have got to admit, expectations are not high. If they just turn up fully dressed it will be a bonus.

Tom’s Patterson team are at Temuka playing Geraldine, and after their mauling by Mayfield last time out it will be interesting to see how they bounce back. Then finally the other Patterson team are at Tinwald against Timaru and after subduing the latest mutiny attempt Captain Blythe is now back in charge along with first mate Bruce so hopefully we will see the good ship back on the correct course.

Our main speaker was Angus McKay who was introduced by Barry Quantock. Angus came from a crop farming background in Methven district. After selling the farm he followed his interest in setting up new local enterprises. While visiting a sister city in China he won their support as a major shareholder in the newly built Ashburton canned milk powder factory. He then described the various processes involved in canning milk powder.

Angus also has a hand in marketing Beech tree honey and explained the health benefits of this nutritional product. Sourced from the Beech forest between Staveley and Methven, the honey is sold only in Christchurch and China.

We had five club members travel to Waimate on Saturday to take part in the Waimate Harriers Road Race. In the last couple of years the event has been run in a Norwest gale, but this year conditions were calm and very warm. The annual race involves runners and walkers from the Waimate, Timaru and Ashburton Clubs and is run over a 2.5km circuit from the Waimate School, out towards the cemetery with participants completing differing numbers of laps to do the distance for their age grade, this ranges from 5km to 10km. Crusaders will follow discipline process New Zealand Rugby Player Association chief executive Rob Nichol says the truth will reveal itself in the allegations made against Crusaders players.

The Super Rugby franchise have handed over an investigation into two separate incidents in South Africa to independent lawyer Steph Dyhrberg, after accusations of inappropriate and homophobic behaviour were made against some of the team’s players.

Nichol applauded the steps taken by the Crusaders in dealing with the situation.

“If you go back, say, 15 years, a lot of things happened but they never came to light, they were never really followed up and frankly probably never really dealt with.

“All our players are very, very conscious now – you just don’t get away with anything. Even arguably in this situation, you haven’t done anything but you’re still in the firing line.”

The investigation is being made into allegations of homophobic behaviour in a McDonald’s restaurant in Cape Town by a trio of players, including George

Bridge, after their recent draw against the Stormers, and inappropriate behaviour from Richie Mo’unga in a bar after their win over the Bulls a week earlier.

All of the players involved deny the allegations which have set social and mainstream media alight, and they will all be available to play the Blues in

Christchurch on Saturday night.

The Crusaders, New Zealand Rugby and NZRPA have spelled out in clear terms how seriously they are taking what they consider to be allegations of unacceptable behaviour and now the onus is on the accusers to step away from their social media accounts and into a meaningful dialogue

with Dyhrberg.

“If there’s an allegation made against a player then you take it seriously from the start and go through a discipline process,” Nichol said.

“If you knew what had happened you wouldn’t have to go through that process, so you don’t try to pre-empt it.”

Howlett on his way back to NZ All Blacks legend Doug Howlett will return to New Zealand.

In announcing the move, Howlett confirmed that after six years of working with Munster Rugby and the Commercial Advisory Board, that the decision is one of mixed emotions.

Howlett commented, “The privilege of playing for Munster Rugby, completing my MBA in UCC, and having the opportunity to run the province’s commercial and marketing programmes under the guidance of Garrett Fitzgerald, and the commercial board’s Niall FitzGerald and Patrick Coveney, have all been incredible experiences.

“It has been an extraordinary 11 years living in Ireland and I will always treasure my time in this special and unique club, and in Irish sport, academia and business.”

Finals night for intermediate

Mid Canterbury’s top intermediate basketball teams for 2019 were found on an action-packed finals night at the Oxford Street stadium on Monday night.

The girls’ final was a hardfought affair, with the Phat West Ducks coming out on top 29-26 over The Muppets, while the boys’ final went the way of the St Joseph’s Shooters, who beat the Ankle Breakers 52-32.

Awards were also handed out for the most improved teams, with the boys’ award going to Mt Hutt Black and the girls’ award won by the 311 Engravers Magic.

The team sportsmanship awards were taken out by the St Joseph’s Thunder and the Borough Wildcats, while the Lost Boys were named the most enthusiastic team.

Individual awards were also given out, with the most improved year seven players being Sharlotte Russell for the girls and Michael Griffiths for the boys, while for the year eights the most improved girl was Hayley Sparks and the most improved boy was Henry Gray.

The most valuable girl award went to Angel Spooner and the most valuable boy was Murphy Dargue, while Ella Monk was named the most improved referee and Amelia Harris was named the most promising referee.

Brooks Koepka held off a late charge from Dustin Johnson to win the PGA Championship for the second straight year. Koepka took a seven-stroke lead into the final round at Bethpage Black and held on after Johnson cut his deficit to one stroke. Koepka finished with a 4-over 74 to win by 2 strokes and claim his fourth major title.

He joins Tiger Woods as the only golfers to win the PGA in back-toback years since the tournament went to stroke play in 1958.

Koepka has also won back-to-back US Opens. Koepka made bogey on four straight holes on the back nine, and when Johnson birdied No. 15, he had closed the gap to one stroke. But Johnson had back-to-back bogeys to restore Koepka’s cushion.

Warriors forwards shun the spotlight With the addition of Kodi Nikorima and the emergence of Patrick Herbert, the Warriors back line has found itself as the centre of attention in recent weeks.

Since Nikorima joined the side from the Brisbane Broncos, the Warriors have won back to back games for the first time this season. During that time, Herbert has been praised for his play at both ends of the pitch.

While that’s kept their newest assets in the spotlight, the Warriors forwards have thrived working under the radar.

“We don’t really like that kind of spotlight,” forward Bunty Afoa said. “For us it’s simple – do our job well and then the backs and the halves can finish it off.

“We can’t just be happy with two wins, though. We had a pretty poor start to the season so for us it’s about getting that chain effect of winning.”

In the past two games, the forwards have done just that – laying the platform for those in the more glamorous positions to make the most of the opportunities. They’ve improved their tackling efficiency from the mark set in their two most recent loss-

es and have been making their mark in the running game and on the scoreboard.

The recent surge has been led by prop Agnatius Paasi, who has scored two tries and made an average of 89 running metres in his last two outings.

However, Paasi will be unavailable for the Warriors for this weekend’s clash against the Brisbane Broncos as he serves a onegame suspension for a dangerous tackle. Afoa will start at prop in his place.

“Unfortunately we lose one of our alphas,” Afoa said. “He’s a leader in the middle and that’s

Another tough challenge on the way

Schoolboy rugby challenges in Canterbury don’t come much tougher than playing Christ’s College one week followed by Christchurch Boys’ High School (CBHS) the next.

But that’s the reality for Mid Canterbury Combined. On Saturday they played Christ’s College and lost 69-3 and this weekend they’re up against a CBHS side fresh off a shock loss to St Thomas of Canterbury on Saturday.

Mid Canterbury Combined coach Brent Middleton said his players knew they’d be up against it for the second week running when they host CBHS at the Methven Domain this weekend.

“They’re coming off a loss and the other motivation for them will be this game against us is their last game before they play their big college clash against Christ’s College, so they won’t be putting their B team out against us,” Middleton said.

The Christ’s College side that came to Ashburton on Saturday was coached by ex-All Black Rueben Thorne and they were just too big and too slick for the home side.

“We were proud of the way they went. They showed great heart and they didn’t give up and they kept trying,” Middleton said.

“It was a classic case of they were up against a massive forward pack – they were big kids

and they were simply bigger and stronger than us.

“They scored some easy tries through their big, strong ball runners but our guys, they weren’t scared or anything like that, they were up competing with them, but it was just a case of the big guys were better than the little guys, really.”

Mid Canterbury will again be the smaller team on the field on Saturday when they play CBHS. “We are going to be looking down both barrels of the shotgun I reckon,” Middleton said.

“They will be pretty annoyed at getting beaten by St Thomas last Saturday.”

Middleton said Mid Canterbury Combined had a game plan of how to compete with the big boys and were focused on getting the basics right so that when opportunities did arise, they could capitalise on them.

The problem against some of the big sides in the competition was getting your hands on decent ball, so you had opportunities to do something with it, Middleton said.

But, in rugby, the favourite didn’t always win. CBHS were favourites to beat St Thomas last weekend, just as Lincoln Combined would have been before their loss to Timaru’s Roncalli College on Saturday.

Every one out there had two arms, and two legs, and anything was possible, Middleton said.

Phelps honoured for mental health honesty AP While swimming to Olympic glory, Michael Phelps found comfort in the pool and quite a bit of angst out of it.

His bout with depression reached its nadir in 2014 after a second DUI arrest. That’s when the most decorated Olympian of all time checked himself into a rehabilitative centre in a desperate effort to make sense of it all.

“When I was in my room and not wanting to talk to anybody for a number of days and not wanting to be alive, I wanted to see what other roads I could take to see if there was help,” Phelps recalled.

The treatment he received – and continues to receive – charted his post-Olympic course.

“I know it’s something that changed my life and saved my life and allowed me to be able to be where I am today, enjoying the platform of talking about something that’s so important,” Phelps told The Associated Press in an interview yesterday.

Because he is willing to share his story of depression and raise awareness of mental health issues, Phelps was given the fifth annual Morton E. Ruderman Award in Inclusion on Tuesday night in Boston.

After participating in four Olympic Games and collecting 28 medals, including 23 gold, Phelps has dedicated his time and energy to promoting the importance of water safety and advocating for the de-stigmatisation of mental health problems through the Michael Phelps Foundation.

“When I first really opened up about the struggles that I had in ‘15, obviously I dreamed of being able to get more publicity to this and to really share my journey and have other people share their journeys with me as well,” Phelps said.

“Honestly, I never thought it would be as big as this, but it’s been a true dream to be able to watch the growth that mental health has taken, almost being at center stage.”

To say this endeavour has been fulfilling is an understatement.

“Through this, if I can save one life, two lives, five lives, a thousand, a million, to me that’s so much more important than winning a gold medal,” he said.

The 33-year-old Phelps believes his bout with depression is a story that many can share, including CEOs and other retired athletes. After accomplishing every goal he

set for himself, what was left to do?

“Probably my first real depression spell was after 2004, then the next big one was after 2008,” he said. “When you set out to be an Olympian, your whole life is put on hold. All the eggs are in one basket. I would say 2004, 2008, 2012, partly after ‘16 (all Olympic years) I’ve dealt with pretty severe depression spells. I was kind of lost at that point.”

The Baltimore native is in a far better frame of mind now.

“To have my wife (Nicole Johnson), who’s always by my side, two amazing little boys at home and a third one on the way, I’m extremely thankful of the support I’ve had to get me through these times,” Phelps said.

The Ruderman Award is given to individuals who are passionate about providing opportunities for others. Phelps certainly fits that description.

“Michael Phelps is a unique leader who has used his fame and status as the greatest swimmer of all time to challenge our society to remove stigma surrounding mental health,” said Jay Ruderman, president of the Ruderman Family Foundation.

“For me, this award means everything because this is where my passion is and the next chapter of my life is really heading,” Phelps said. “We’re kind of scratching the surface of what can be done, and I’m looking forward to continuing this journey and accomplishing some of the goals that I have — de-stigmatising mental health and just getting the point across that it’s OK to not be OK.”

Marsh aims to live cup dream Trainer Stephen Marsh is Melbourne-bound in search of a golden ticket.

The Cambridge trainer will saddle progressive stayer Felaar in the Listed Andrew Ramsden Stakes (2800m) at Flemington on Saturday, with the winner guaranteed a start in the Gr.1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) at the same course on the first Tuesday in November.

Felaar won the Listed Hawke’s Bay Cup (2200m) last month before his two preparation runs in Melbourne ahead of Saturday’s assignment, finishing a luckless 11th at Flemington before a good run for third at Caulfield last start.

“He is primed and ready for his big attack on Saturday,” Marsh said.

“I think he has improved for the run at Caulfield. The first-up run was a bit of a non-event, he was a victim of circumstances there. Second-up he was a lot better, but I think that run has brought him on.

“Going back to a nice big track like Flemington, I really like it.

The field is nice but similar to what he has met previously. It has got a ticket to the Melbourne Cup, so if we can be winning we will definitely back for it.”

Felaar will sport the royal blue and white hoops carried to victory in the 2001 Melbourne Cup

by Ethereal, with the star mare’s owner Sir Peter Vela sharing ownership of Felaar, alongside restaurateur Leo Molloy, while Marsh also has an interest.

“There are a lot of great races around the world but the Melbourne Cup is really the one race that every trainer wants to win,”

“To have a runner would be great. I even own a share in him myself so it would be even better.

“It is the race that stops the nation, and a lot of the world now, so it would mean everything to get in.”

Felaar will be ridden by ex-pat Michael Dee, who can get down to a light-weight should Felaar book a Melbourne Cup berth.

The five-year-old gelding has drawn perfectly in barrier six, with a capacity field of 18 to run.

“I think he is a good stayer. He is still learning his trade, he is a big raw sort of horse, a staying type and he doesn’t really know how to let down properly yet,” Marsh said.

“He is getting better and better and I think he goes into this race a much more forward horse.

Things are looking pretty good.

“I’d like to see him off the bit travelling just in behind the speed, just ahead of midfield.

Hopefully he drops the bit and I don’t see the 2800m as a prob-

lem.

“Michael Dee was very keen to stick with the ship after riding him at Caulfield. He put his hand straight up for the ride so we booked him straight away. He is more than happy to stick with him and we were more than happy to have him on.”

Run under weight-for-age conditions, the A$400,000 race has drawn a solid field featuring in-form stayers Steel Prince and Surprise Baby.

Vigor Winner vying for back-to-back wins Last start Group Three winner Vigor Winner will be vying for more stakes success when he tackles the Gr.3 Fred Best Classic (1400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

The Lauren Brennan-trained galloper has been consistent in his four career starts, recording three victories and a runner-up performance in the Gr.2 Wellington Guineas (1400m).

“He’s a very smart horse and

very talented. He probably should have won that race (Wellington Guineas), he just got held up at the top of the turn,” Brennan said.

“He has been very consistent and is quite an exciting horse.”

The son of Declaration of War will jump from barrier 15 under jockey Blake Shinn and Brennan is hoping her gelding can overcome his wide gate.

“He’s quite a versatile horse,”

she said. “He usually jumps very well in his races, but his last start, in the Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes, he missed the kick.

“There was a horse playing up beside him and he was concentrating more on that than the gates opening.

“He then came wide in that race, so he is quite versatile.”

2YO Loire shows promise at the Bay Cambridge trainer Tony Pike might be enjoying a purple patch across the Tasman, but yesterday he unearthed a filly on the homefront that looks destined to go to the upper grades.

Two-year-old filly Loire relished the Dead4 track presented at Hawke’s Bay and closed from well-back in the field to win the Nufarm 2YO (1200m) impressively under a hold in the hands of jockey Michael McNab. The daughter of Redoute’s Choice is a half-sister to Group One winner A Touch Of Ruby and finished seventh on debut behind Avadane at Matamata, but showed her gears when successful at second time of asking.

“We thought she’d get away a bit cleaner and we’d ride her positively, but Michael didn’t panic, he elected to stay inside, and she bulldozed her way through. She is pretty classy,” Pike’s racing manager Dean Williams said.

“She is well-bred, and she has got the looks to match and now she is showing she has got the ability.”

Loire was bred by Trelawney Stud and is raced by principals Brent and Cherry Taylor in conjunction with their friend Kate Plaw of Takapoto Farm in Karapiro.

Pike’s good run continued when Sacred Judgment took out the final event at Hawke’s Bay, the Fruitfed Supplies (1300m) when leading throughout.

Wallabies veteran Kurtley Beale says there is no division among players over the sacking of fullback Israel Folau.

Folau is considering legal action after his four-year contract was terminated by Rugby Australia over his anti-gay social media posts.

Some Wallabies players of Pacific Island heritage who share Folau’s religious beliefs have expressed strong support for his views and opposition to his sacking. Others, including Walalbies captain Michael Hooper, have said they would find it difficult to play with Folau because of the homophobic nature of his comments.

Beale said yesterday that players attending a Wallabies training camp had been given the chance to express their views on Folau’s treatment and there was no sign of division which could impact the Wallabies preparation for the World Cup in Japan, now only four months away.

“No, everyone was pretty good,” Beale said. “Obviously there’s a lot of speculation around that stuff, but I think those camps are for individuals to step up to make sure we’re all committing to the cause and making sure they’re getting their own backyard sorted so when selection times come around they’re ready to pounce – and there was no sign of that at all.

“It was all positive and I think just a lot of excitement for what we have to come.”

Beale said Folau retained his “full support” and he regretted he would no longer be part of the Wallabies team.

“I mean, on the field he was just unbelievable,” he said. “The impact he had and the presence he had on the field was immense and it lifted everyone in the group.

He’s an amazing talent and he will be missed.”

Two teams are in the danger zone, while another two have everything to play for when the last round one games of Mid Canterbury Netball’s premier competitions hit the court tonight.

Catch-up games at the EA Networks Centre on Tuesday night added to the promotion and relegation drama.

Mt Somers and Celtic B are fighting to stay in premier one, while United A and Southern A are fighting to take their place.

To add to the tension, Mt Somers play Celtic B in tonight’s final round, and United A play Southern A. Winners will be promoted, losers relegated.

Neither Mt Somers or Celtic B

have won a game so far this season, but Mt Somers put up their best fight of the season on Tuesday night against Hampstead A. Hampstead A eventually ground out a 26-20 win, but for a fair chunk of the game was goalfor-goal. After the first quarter it was 6-all, at half time Hampstead A led 12-11, and by three-quarter time they led 19-17.

Every time either team looked like gaining an edge, the other would fight back, then in the fourth quarter Hampstead capitalised on a couple of Mt Somers errors and didn’t look back.

Celtic B, on the other hand, head into tonight’s big clash off a 47-19 loss to club-mates and defending premier one champions Celtic A.

The win maintained Celtic A’s winning run this season, with the side top of the table on 16 points, followed by both Hampstead A and Methven A on 12 points.

Methven A picked up the other big win on Tuesday night, 31-24 against College A. The game was always going to be a battle, and heading into it many would have picked a margin of just a couple of goals to be the outcome either way, so there were high-fives all round in the Methven A camp after the final whistle sounded on the seven-goal win.

It wasn’t the result College A coach Kaye Kennedy had been hoping for to kick-start a big week for her team and while she was pleased with how they performed

on defence, said they just lost their connectivity on attack.

As well as two premier one games in Ashburton this week, College had a Canterbury secondary school SuperNet game against Villa Maria last night in Christchurch too.

The schoolgirls take on Celtic A tonight.

Methven A and Hampstead A also square off.

After her side’s narrow win against Mt Somers on Tuesday night, Hampstead A coach Janene McDowell is hoping to see improvement.

Although happy with the win, McDowell said her side struggled to find their space and flow against Mt Somers and it had been difficult heading into a game

without a chance to practise and regroup from their last game.

United A has the superior goal difference heading into their must-win premier two match against Southern A, but both sides have hardly been troubled so far this season. It will be a tight match.

On Tuesday night United A beat Celtic C 43-13, while Southern A beat Hampstead B 43-8, and in the other game of the round Ashburton College B beat Methven B 27-20.

Tonight’s other premier two games see Methven B play Hampstead B, while Ashburton College B take on Celtic C, the team at the bottom of the premier two leaderboard heading into the final stage of round one.
