Ashburton support services are dealing with a steady trickle of homeless people, including a growing number of women.

Figures obtained for the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) showed 11 names on the waiting list for social housing, however each registration could represent a family.

While that number accounts for just 0.2 per cent of the national MSD count, many people appear to be sidestepping government agencies in their search for affordable housing.

Ashburton Salvation Army Major Ken Smith is dealing with one or two people

each week, as is Presbyterian Support manager Jackie Girvan.

“The most difficult group to find homes for are men aged between 20 and 60 years because women and children are prioritised by government agencies,” Major Smith said.

Last week he assisted a man who had been living in his car for “quite some time”.

In a community the size of Mid Canterbury word of mouth was the most effective way to find solutions for homelessness – but there’s always a shortfall between supply of affordable housing and demand. In emergency situations the charities help fund short-term stays

in motels or camping grounds.

Mrs Girvan also said there was a severe shortage in the local housing market for homes for single people.

“There are rentals out there but they are usually upward of $300 a week and most of the people we see are on a benefit, they don’t have the wherewithal to pay that,” she said.

While the numbers have remained relatively constant over recent years, the demographic of those seeking assistance has altered.

Schools call for speed limits to be reduced

Mid Canterbury needs a slower and consistent speed limit outside all schools for the safety of children, a local principal says.

A few months ago the Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association (MCPA) sent a request to council to enforce a 40km/h speed limit outside all schools.

Council have had initial discussions with the association and are looking into the possibility but roading manager Brian Fauth previously said a lower speed limit would be nearly impossible to enforce outside rural schools.

MCPA president Hilary Boyce, who is also the principal of Wakanui School, said many rural schools had 100km/h speed limits on their boundary roads and this was too fast.

At their monthly MCPA meeting on Thursday, all principals unanimously agreed that schools in the area should have a consistent and

slow speed limit and they would be discussing this further with council this week.

“We would strongly urge the council to consider the safety of all children.”

They had asked for 40km/h but would be open to a discussion about what a feasible limit could be. All agree that 100km/h and 80km/h are far too fast and even when a child is hit at 50km/h their chances of surviving are slim, she said.

If a consistent limit was put in place 24 hours a day outside all schools in the district then people would get the message quite quickly.

It is far less confusing than having different limits at different times of day such as before and after school, Ms Boyce said.

Council has been in discussions with other districts who have already enforced limits outside their schools about how well the project had worked.

Ashburton RSA set to turn 100 Ashburton’s RSA turns 100 at the end of the month.

The local association for returned servicemen and women was founded in May 1916 and a weekend of celebrations, including a dinner, dance and church service, will mark the milestone.

Chairman of the centennial committee John Nolan said the Ashburton RSA remained strong, with over 1000 members and associate members and while other RSAs around the country were closing through lack of numbers, Ashburton was maintaining its base of members and supporters.

The centennial celebrations will kick off on Friday with an in-

formal get-together, followed by a dinner with guest speakers and dance on Saturday. A church service at St Andrew’s would follow on the Sunday.

Mr Nolan said guest speakers at the dinner included Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew and Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay, as well as RSA representatives from the local and national association.

He said a special centennial project the Ashburton branch had been working on would sadly not be happening in time for the weekend. Ashburton is taking possession of a 7.5 tonne cannon, which is to be relocated from Sumner.

Mr Nolan said the cannon

would be set on a concrete pad at the Ashburton RSA; and be one way of keeping alive connections to the now-defunct Sumner RSA. Since 1980, the Ashburton RSA has been accepting associate members as a way of boosting its membership and the plan is working, with a new junior section for the grandchildren of members.

“It’s also a great way of exposing the younger ones to all things military.”

RSA members have been selling pens, coasters, mugs and glasses, all emblazoned with a centennial logo, to help fund the celebrations.

More people looking for affordable housing in Ashburton From P1 “We are seeing an increase in the number of woman requiring help, whereas before it was mainly men,” she said.

“Now we are seeing older women, aged between 55 and 70, often because of ill health and who haven’t a house of their own.”

Mrs Girvan expects this trend to inten-

sify in the future. “I think we will see more women because there’s a whole group coming through who don’t own their homes and when the chips are down they are in trouble,” she said.

Boarding is one solution, but that doesn’t suit everyone.

“A lot of older people are set in their ways and find it difficult to accommodate living with other people,” Mrs Girvan said.

Sports groups to have say

At least four sporting groups will call on the Ashburton District Council next week to extend or further develop the EA Networks sports stadium.

The stadium and pool facility was opened a year ago and is already struggling with huge demand for its spaces.

Adding courts, break-out rooms and turning surround land into sports fields is among submissions sports groups will make to council during the annual plan process tomorrow.

Council received 59 submissions on its draft annual plan, which sets out how it will spend its money over the next 12 months.

Income from rates is expected to be around $31.7 million.

Hearing the submissions is expected to take most of tomorrow morning, with councillors debating their merits later in the day.

Mid Canterbury Netball wants council to extend the stadium to include two more courts and breakout rooms that could be used for event or tournament management. They also want more storage space.

“Netball have committed to the stadium by moving all of its competition indoors, we have over 1000 participants currently involved in netball,” said spokesperson Karla Newlands.

“To allow for growth within the competitions and to offer further competitions, more courts would be required. To run quality events, more space is required for teams/ event management.”

Hockey Mid Canterbury also wanted more breakout rooms for sports running their administration from the facility and the Ashburton Swim Team sought space

for catering when it ran large swim meets.

Mid Canterbury Rugby chief executive Ian Patterson asked for the land around the stadium to be developed into sports fields under council’s proposed open spaces strategy.

The sports fields were proposed earlier as a stage 2 development of the EA Networks Centre plan.

“Rather than entertain further expansion of the existing indoor facilities, our view is that council needs to turn its attention to beginning the preparatory work to develop spaces and facilities for

field sports of a standard suitable for community sports and other recreational activities in the sports centre precinct”.

Federated Farmers will also be among those making submissions, urging caution over spending because of the rural recession and its flow-on effects.

“In view of the deepening rural recession, council long-term planning must be reviewed and capital projects delayed until the ability of rural ratepayers to pay rates, let alone rate increases is restored.”

Ryan Dynes and seven mates from the Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade are building up a healthy dislike of the stairclimber at the EA Networks Centre gymnasium.

They have been thrashing the machine in full firefighter kit as training for this year’s Sky Tower stair challenge in Auckland at the end of the month. The challenge, in its 12th year, raises money for the Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand – last year Rakaia firefighters raised $11,000 towards a national tally of $1 million.

Ryan said all seven had friends or family members affected by leukaemia or blood cancer so it was a challenge close to their hearts.

In preparation they have been on marathon stairclimber sessions at the gym and climbing the fire escape at Synlait’s Dunsandel milk processing plant; 10 times up the factory’s 110 steps will be close to the 1103 steps they will climb at the Sky Tower on May 28.

The Rakaia crew, like more than 800 other firefighters who have

signed up for the challenge, will be wearing their full 26kg kit, which includes breathing apparatus with cylinder and mask.

Ryan said it was hot, uncomfortable and lung-busting work but nothing compared to the real-life experiences of cancer sufferers.

He took part in the challenge last year and is keen to better his time, though he admits to a shorter training period this time around. Good leg strength is key, along with good aerobic fitness, and some upper body strength to use the handrails and the ability to wear full firefighter kit throughout the event.

The event is short but punishing, with the fastest last year Josh Harrison from Otara Fire Station, who sped up the 51 flights in 8 minutes 34 seconds.

The Rakaia crew also includes Stuart Wiseman, Ben Kirk, Luke Rushton, Logan Jackson, Craig Austin, Chris Peat and Adam Williams.

Fund to help dairy children

Mid Canterbury’s dairy children will soon benefit from a fund set up for schools in the district.

Dairy NZ has set up a fund, which will be available from June 1, to help schools in Mid Canterbury, Clutha and Southland provide extra assistance for children with parents working in the dairy industry.

Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president and Wakanui School principal Hilary Boyce said the fund has been provided

to Southland schools for more than a year but has only recently been approved for Mid Canterbury and Clutha.

It has been set up because dairy children often move schools regularly, usually on June 1 for Gypsy Day. “As a result there’s often issues that arise from isolation and change,” she said.

Many children struggle to settle into a new school and require extra assistance so this fund will be able to help with this.

There have been studies that

show that every time a child moves schools it takes them about six months to catch up again, Ms Boyce said.

“I think it will be useful, especially for children who move schools. Often we need a little bit of time to find out what their strengths and weaknesses are.”

Mid Canterbury and Clutha were chosen because both areas expressed an interest in and a need for the fund, Ms Boyce said.

“It’s a brand new initiative for Mid Canterbury. I think it’s really great that Dairy NZ have recog-

nised this as a real effect and are prepared to help out.”

Ms Boyce, Methven Primary School principal Chris Murphy and Carew Peel Forest principal Kay Ward spent two days in Invercargill earlier this month to learn more about the fund and visit schools who had already used it.

The fund will be administered by a sub-committee of the Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association who will be able to receive applications from schools from June 1.

Celebrating Ashburton’s migrant community

More than 90 people attended the opening of an exhibition celebrating Ashburton’s migrant community at Baring Square on Friday evening.

The Crossing the Bridge photography and film exhibition is being held to coincide with UNESCO’s World Day for Cultural Diversity which occurred on Saturday.

The project, led by Mauritian anthropologist Sophie-Claire Violette and Belgian photographer Petra Mingneau, showcases biographies of 22 migrants who now live in Ashburton.

Ms Violette said the opening was a wonderful success with most of the participants attending with their families and friends. “We had a really great turnout in spite of the rain.”

Marquees were set up to shelter people from the rain, which actually provided a lovely atmosphere, she said.

“It gave the whole exhibition a romantic feel which was nice.”

A film was shown alongside the portraits and photographs that migrants have taken with disposable cameras to capture moments, people, places which tell their stories. “The movie was

Petrol spill Members of the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade spent half an hour cleaning up a petrol spill from a car parked at the Countdown car park at 9.42am yesterday. A fire brigade spokesperson said the owner of the car had filled up with petrol but due to a mechanical fault petrol had spilled out of the vehicle while the owner was grocery shopping.

Car written off A 20-year-old man was uninjured after his vehicle crashed into a power pole on Line Road, Lauriston, at 12.16am yesterday.

Senior Constable Mike Seque, of Methven, said the power pole had to be replaced and the vehicle was written off but the man escaped without injury. Fatigue and alcohol factors are being investigated.

Ambulance crash One person is injured after a car crashed into an ambulance in Paeroa. The ambulance was parked on the side of the road and a car smashed into it just before 9am yesterday. St John staff had been attending a medical call-out when the crash happened. A St John spokeswoman said one person has moderate injuries and was transported to Thames Hospital in a different ambulance. Fire and police also attended.

Passenger dies The passenger in a vehicle involved in a police chase and crash in Porirua on Saturday night has died. Police said officers signalled for the vehicle to pull over for a routine check. The driver did not stop and instead fled in the vehicle. Police followed and the pursuit lasted for less than two minutes. The fleeing vehicle lost control on a right-hand bend and crashed through a fence.

The passenger died as a result of injuries.

Lifelong penpals reconnect

Mary Renner, 80, and her English penpal John Milne, 82, have shared the major moments in their lives from across the world for 70 years.

Their enduring friendship has survived puberty, marriage, the birth of children, divorce and death.

The pair met, possibly for the last time, when Mary travelled from her Ashburton home to spend five weeks with John and his family in Leeds this month.

In an age when most correspondence is by email, text or cellphone, their story was newspaper and radio news in John’s home town and Mary was a minor celebrity.

The pair began exchanging letters in the 1940s, when Mary was 10 and a pupil at Eiffelton School.

She and John exchanged letters every six weeks, as the pair progressed through school and then into separate marriages.

Letters were often accompanied by presents for babies or birthdays.

The years rolled by and when the letters became less frequent,

Ashburton’s Mary Renner is home again after travelling to the UK to visit her penpal of 70 years.

the pair began to exchange telephone calls.

There was always something

to discuss, and the pair traversed family, working life and sport.

It was sport that took Mary to

the UK in 1993 when she was part of an All Blacks supporters group. She and John, a football

fan, shared a beer and watched a game of rugby.

Mary, who has travelled widely, said she wanted to visit the UK once again before poor health put paid to her wandering.

She stayed with John and his wife Heather in their Leeds bungalow for five weeks, helping in the garden and enjoying a slice of her penpal’s life.

The friends played cards, enjoyed the local pubs and sights; their conversation covered everything from World War Two to the local women’s institute.

Mary said the pair had been exchanging calendars in lieu of letters in recent years and it was great to visit the moors and dales that featured in John’s seasonal offerings.

John says having a penpal on the other side of the world was fantastic, though the former chartered accountant can’t recall what he wrote in the early days.

Chances are high it was about football.

Mary still has all his letters, tucked away in her wardrobe, and said their friendship was all the more special because it was in paper form.

‘Blatant’ copyright breach Media lawyers say streaming the Joseph Parker v Carlos Takam fight on social media was a “blatant” copyright breach and those who uploaded it could face a fine in the millions.

Saturday night’s boxing clash between Joseph Parker and Carlos Takam attracted more than 100,000 views from Facebook users watching live-streams that had been re-broadcast unlawfully by people filming Sky TV’s $49.99 pay-per-view of the match.

Promoter Dean Lonergan has threatened to sue those who live-

streamed for thousands of dollars. Media law experts weighed in yesterday.

“It’s a pretty blatant obvious copyright breach,” said Rick Shera, of Auckland firm Lowndes Jordan.

“The breach is in copying it from the TV screen and then as a separate breach in communicating it again.”

Mr Shera said the losses suffered by the copyright holder would be the basis of any damages claim and on the face of it, this could be 100,000 times $49.99 – nearly $5 million.

But it was unclear what level of proof was required to show an actual loss.

“Had it not been for the infringement, would 100,000 people have paid $50 to view it? The answer is probably no. The court would hear evidence on what the likely viewership would have been and how would that have played out.”

Another lawyer, Kevin Glover, said the end viewers of the unlawful live-stream might also have broken the law, but it would be unlikely for a copyright holder to sue them.

Earlier, Lonergan came out swinging against the “complete lowlifes” who live-streamed the fight on social media, threatening to sue for thousands of dollars.

“If we can find who those people are we’ll be looking to bill them, probably in the tens of thousands of dollars.

“There will be two choices when we find out who they are, we’ll send them an invoice for tens of thousands of dollars and they can pay that or they’ll find themselves in court. It’s theft and they’re lowlifes.”

Mount Hutt students take to the stage Mount Hutt College’s performance about gardens took out the coveted Spirit of Stage Challenge Award and an Award of Excellence for Drama and Soundtrack during the Christchurch Stage Challenge on Tuesday.

A team of 54 students captivated the audience with their act ‘Border Control’ which portrayed gardens and gardeners as a metaphor for conflicts of ideas in troubling times and the fight for freedom.

The school’s stage challenge co-ordinator Lisa Ponweiser said the students used their composition to pose the question, who is in control? The gardeners or the garden?

The group, along with four teachers, had been rehearsing for weeks and went up to Christchurch on Thursday for the competition.

“We had an incredible time and we were really inspired by the calibre of all the other performances,” she said.

“We saw lots of wow and incredibly clever effects, props and movements on stage.”

Mount Hutt College has entered Stage Challenge every second year since 2012 (when they placed third). The students also won the Spirit of Stage Challenge Award in 2014.

Review into death Donations to help fund a review into the death of Blessie Gotingco have topped $71,000. The 56-yearold was raped and murdered in Auckland two years ago by Tony Robertson, who’d been released from prison just five months earlier.

Her husband Antonio Gotingco says the family is considering filing a civil case against the Department of Corrections, which he says has blood on its hands. He says the department facilitated the actions of Robertson when it put him in their neighbourhood and gave him the opportunity to kill somebody.

College break-in Blood has been found in a number of rooms that were broken into at a Queenstown tertiary education centre on Saturday night. Significant damage was caused to the rooms and property inside the Queenstown Resort College, police said. Blood was also discovered in some of the damaged rooms, with investigating officers suggesting the intruders may have injured themselves during the incident. Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to contact Dunedin Police on 03 471 4800, or anonymously contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Crash victims named Police have released the names of the two young men who died in a crash in the Bay of Plenty on Saturday. They were Chance Whittaker-Ngaropo, 16, of Auckland and Te Hira WhittakerNgaropo, 12, of Auckland.

The pair died after a crash on State Highway 2 in Pikowai. It is understood that 16-year-old Chance was driving the vehicle which was travelling towards Whakatane when it left the road on a straight, and hit trees. - NZME

Spectator killed A man died – understood to be a spectator – and two people were injured after a collision at a motocross event in Cambridge yesterday.

Police said the man died and a man and woman were treated for minor injuries at the event at the Cambridge MX Track in Rowling Place, Leamington, just before 12.20pm.

Firefighters performed CPR. A rescue helicopter was sent and the injured were flown to hospital.

The NZ Motorcycling website said round two of the Cambridge Motorcycle Club MX competition was scheduled to take place yesterday.

The Cambridge Motocross website posted about the incident.

A troubled overhaul of a payroll and HR system for police has a “burn rate” of $2 million for each month it is delayed, documents reveal. Police had aimed to have a new Human Resources Management Information System running last month, but that date has been pushed out until September. Its whole-of-life budget has blown out by about $8 million and will now be up to $64 million. Stuart Nash, Labour’s police spokesman, said police had a history of delayed IT projects, with close to half of current projects late in 2014/15.

NZ a leader in fertility New Zealand has been named a world leader in fertility treatment.

A global report on reproductive technologies, such as IVF, has positioned New Zealand and Australia as having the second highest rate of access to assisted reproductive technologies (ART) in the world. The report includes data from nearly 2500 ART clinics from between 58 and 61 countries in the years 2008, 2009 and 2010, and it is the first time all regions of the world have been included, with the first submissions of data from some sub-Saharan African countries.

Challenge for young writers The Ashburton Writers’ Group is hoping to uncover the next Lee Childs or Ernest Hemingway during its annual short story and poetry competition for young people.

Writers’ spokesperson Rae Magson said stories and poems in past years had shown plenty of creativity and she expected no change this year.

“I advise them to use their imaginations and be creative.

“Last year we had a lot of stories about World War One, because that was relevant, and dragons are a recurring theme.

“The judging panel will read them all and it’s a really enjoyable job.

“There are some very mature young minds out there.”

Children’s safety should be a priority

call made by local principals for lower speed limits outside schools needs to be listened to.

A few months ago the Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association wrote to the Ashburton District Council asking them to consider reducing speed limits outside schools to 40km/h.

The possibility of this is being considered by council but they have said that it might not be an effective safety measure due to the difficulty of enforcing the restriction.

However, that shouldn’t stop a new limit from being created.

Even if it is difficult to monitor and enforce having a limit of 40km/h would mean it is against the law to drive faster than this outside schools and most law-abiding citizens would obey this.

The majority of people in our community stick to the speed limit and if it was changed they would most likely stick to a new one too.

Having a blanket limit outside all schools would be much easier to remember than 50km/h outside one and 100km/h outside another.

It would also be much safer.

Children don’t have fully developed brains and many are not as road smart as they would be once they have reached adulthood, so having higher speed limits is very risky and dangerous.

Because Mid Canterbury is a rural district many schools are on highways and driving past a school at 100km/h is far too fast.

It’s scary that this is the law and that we allow that risk.

What if your child, grandchild, niece or nephew made a mistake one day and darted across the road as a car was coming?

It would be devastating. Your whole life would be shattered.

Accidents do happen and a car travelling at 40km/h would do far less damage than one driving at 100km/h.

Children’s safety should be a priority and most people in the district would not have a problem with slowing down to pass a school if it saved a life.

We do it for school buses with legislation making it illegal to drive more than 20km/h past a stationary school bus in either direction.

Other districts have school zones where lower speed limit signs are turned on before and after school or operate all day.

Surely we could do something like this here and make our roads a little safer.

Early announcements for Budget 2016 T

his Thursday afternoon the Minister of Finance Hon Bill English will deliver his 8th Budget in the Parliament.

I am looking forward to hearing him discuss the wide range of initiatives that will build on the good progress we’ve made over the previous seven Budgets.

Ahead of the main Budget announcements to be made on Thursday have been a number of early announcements, in justice and social development, health, business and sport which I thought I would highlight in this column.

Budget 2016 will invest $46 million of operating funding over four years to better support victims and prevent sexual violence.

The $46 million in total funding, of which $6.4 million is reprioritised funding, will be used to design and implement new sexual violence services and maintain existing services.

The additional funding will support a new frontline crisis response for victims, harmful

sexual behaviour services to reduce offending and reoffending, assessment and treatment programmes and services for male survivors of sexual abuse.

The Government will also increase funding for health research by $97 million over the next four years.

The annual amount available for health research through the Health Research Council (HRC) will increase by 56 per cent over four years – from $77 million in 2015/16 to $120 million in 2019/20.

This increased investment in the HRC in Budget 2016 shows our commitment to ensuring that health research remains

strong in New Zealand. $15 million of additional funding will be made available over four years for two schemes that speed up the commercialisation of new clever technologies developed by scientists and entrepreneurs around New Zealand.

Encouraging the development of new export-oriented high-tech businesses is a key part of the innovation stream of the Government’s Business Growth Agenda.

We are seeing hundreds of very savvy hi-tech companies from New Zealand now competing and succeeding on the world stage.

These programmes are all about filling the pipeline with the next generation of quality kiwi start-ups.

Funding for the Pre-Seed Accelerator Fund will increase by $12 million over four years, taking the Government’s total investment through the scheme to $8.3 million per year.

IS ‘calls for attacks’ A new message purporting to come from the spokesman of Islamic State calls on followers to launch attacks on the United States and Europe during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which begins in early June.

“Ramadan, the month of conquest and jihad. Get prepared, be ready ... to make it a month of calamity everywhere for the non-believers ... especially for the fighters and supporters of the caliphate in Europe and America,” said the message, suggesting attacks on military and civilian targets.

The authenticity of the audio clip, pur-

porting to be from Abu Muhammad al-Adnani and distributed by Twitter accounts that usually publish Islamic State statements, could not be verified.

“The smallest action you do in their heartland is better and more enduring to us than what you would if you were with us. If one of you hoped to reach the Islamic State, we wish we were in your place to punish the Crusaders day and night,” Adnani said.

The militant group, which seeks to establish a caliphate across the Middle East and beyond, has claimed deadly attacks

over the past year on civilians in France, Belgium and the United States. But the message made no mention of the EgyptAir flight that crashed into the Mediterranean on Thursday in unexplained circumstances, amid speculation by Egyptian, French and American officials that a jihadist attack was the most likely cause.

A US-led coalition, which also includes European and Arab countries, launched a campaign of air strikes against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria in 2014 after the militants seized vast swathes of territory in those countries.

Melbourne lecturer dies descending Everest A Melbourne university lecturer has died of altitude sickness while descending Mount Everest and there are concerns for her husband trekking with her.

Dr Maria Strydom, a finance lecturer at Monash University, fell ill and died on Saturday afternoon.

“After reaching the summit yesterday she said she was feeling very weak and suffering from a loss of energy ... signs of altitude sickness,” Seven Summit Treks board director Pasang Phurba Sherpa said.

An experienced climber, Dr Strydom, 34, was travelling with her husband Robert Gropel on a seven-week expedition.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says it is providing consular assistance to her family and “to an injured Australian man accompanying the woman”.

Dr Strydom’s mother Maritha Strydom confirmed her death on Facebook.

Monash University said in a statement it was “deeply saddened by the tragic news”, which broke as confirmation came through that Queensland teenager Alyssa Azar had become the youngest Australian to conquer Everest on her third attempt.

“We are liaising with authorities and our heartfelt thoughts and support are extended to Maria’s family, her friends, colleagues and students,” a university spokesman said.

Monash is offering counselling support for students and staff.

In the past eight years, the couple had climbed summits in Alaska, Argentina, Turkey and Mt Kilimanjaro.

Dr Strydom’s death came a day after altitude sickness also claimed the life of Dutch climber Eric Arnold.

They were the first fatalities on Everest since expeditions resumed this year.

Hologram ruled out

A much-anticipated performance by Whitney Houston in hologram form won’t air on NBC’s The Voice next week after all. The performance, which would have paired the late singer with Christina Aguilera, a Voice celebrity coach, had been expected to air on the season finale.

But the high-tech duet has been shelved for technical reasons. Pat Houston, the late superstar’s sister-in-law and head of her estate, explained that “holograms are new technology that takes time to perfect”. After reviewing the hologram performance, she said the decision was made that it fell short of the perfection “Whitney’s legacy and her devoted fans deserve”, and shouldn’t air.

Jet sent smoke warnings The EgyptAir jet which crashed in the Mediterranean last week sent a series of warnings indicating that smoke had been detected on board, shortly before it disappeared off radar screens, French investigators say.

A spokesman for France’s BEA air accident investigation agency said the signals did not indicate what caused the smoke or fire on board the plane, which plunged into the sea with 66 people on board as it was heading from Paris to Cairo.

But they offered the first clues as to what unfolded in the moments before the crash.

One aviation source said that a fire on board would likely have generated multiple warning signals, while a sudden explosion may not have generated any - though officials stress that no scenario, including explosion, is being ruled out.

Egypt said its navy had found human remains, wreckage and the personal belongings of passengers floating in the Mediterranean about 290km north of Alexandria.

The army published pictures at the weekend on its official Facebook page of the recovered items, which included blue and white debris with EgyptAir markings, seat fabric with designs in the airline’s colours, and a

yellow lifejacket. Analysis of the debris and recovery of the plane’s twin flight recorders are likely to be key to determining the cause of the crash - the third blow since October to Egypt’s travel industry, still reeling from political unrest following the 2011 uprising that ousted Hosni Mubarak.

A suspected Islamic State bombing brought down a Russian airliner after it took off from Sharm el-Sheikh airport in late October, killing all 224 people on board, and an EgyptAir plane was hijacked in March by a man wearing a fake suicide belt.

It made no claim of responsibility for the Egyptair crash.

The signals from the plane “do not allow in any way to say what may have caused smoke or fire on board the aircraft”, said a spokesman for the French BEA agency, which is assisting an official Egyptian investigation.

He added that the priority now was to find the two flight recorders, known as black boxes, containing cockpit voice recordings and data readings, from the Airbus A320.

Egyptian said it was too soon to reach any conclusions about the cause of the crash.

Craig rejects Bond deal UK actor Daniel Craig has rejected a £68 million ($NZ145.9 million) deal to star in the next two new James Bond films, as he said he is “done” playing the 007 role, the Daily Mail has reported. The Daily Mail explained that the actor, 48, told directors at MGM Studios company that he would not repeat the Bond role, despite the “huge amounts of money” offered to him. Spectre (2015) was the fourth and last film starring Craig as Bond. The Mail pointed out that Craig informed the producers that Spectre would be his last film of the series, but the company believed the British actor could return if he “was offered a money deal”. The company said Craig wanted to stop playing the spy due to a knee injury during filming Spectre.

■ Preheat the oven to 180°C.

QUICK MEAL Tegel Size 16 whole bagged chicken, fresh or frozen, thawed Fresh basil leaves 1 lemon, cut into wedges Salt and pepper 1 T butter ¾ C chicken stock Tapenade 1 tbsp olive oil 2 rashers Tegel Smoked Chicken Rashers chopped 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 small red pepper, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 2 t chopped fresh thyme ½ C pitted black olives, finely chopped 1 anchovy fillet, chopped (optional) 2 T chopped parsley 2 T capers, drained and chopped Black pepper to taste

■ Place the basil leaves and lemon inside the cavity of the chicken.

■ Place the chicken into a roasting dish. Season with salt and pepper and place the butter on top of the breast. Place 1/2 cup chicken stock in the dish.

■ Roast the chicken until the juices run clear when pierced through the thickest part of the thigh.

■ Baste occasionally and add extra chicken stock as necessary.

■ To prepare the tapenade, heat the olive oil in a frying pan. Add the chicken rashers and cook

until it is crisp and golden.

■ Add the onion, red pepper, garlic and thyme and continue to cook over medium heat for a further 2 to 3 minutes.

■ Add the black olives, chopped anchovy fillet (if used), parsley and capers and cook for a further 3 minutes. Season with black pepper.

■ Serve the chicken with the tapenade, roast vegetables and green vegetables.

More to Philly than political history

Spruce Street Harbor Park, or SSHB as it is known, started as an experimental pop-up park on the Delaware River, but has become so popular it’s back for a third summer season.

W

ith classic rowhouse architecture, brick sidewalks and narrow streets, some charming neighbourhoods in Philadelphia can almost make you forget about cheesesteaks, Rocky and that whole American Revolution thing ... almost.

It will be hard to escape the Cradle of Liberty references this July as the city hosts the Democratic National Convention.

But Philly has plenty to offer even the most non-political visitor.

Things have been really hoppy, er hoppin’, during the warm months thanks to an influx of beer gardens and revamped civic spaces where you can socialise, people watch and Instagram your heart out.

New vantage points from up high and at the water’s edge will give you a whole new way to look at The City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection.

WHAT’S NEW What started as an experimental pop-up park on the Delaware River has become so popular it’s back for a third summer season.

With food, beer, hammocks and boardwalk games, Spruce Street Harbor Park has revived a faded area known as Penn’s Landing.

The vibrant destination includes a waterfront roller rink and seaport museum complete with

The city’s other river boasts a scenic recreational trail that recently received an eye-catching extension. The Schuylkill (pronounced SKOO’-kul) Banks Boardwalk offers postcard views of the skyline from its start at the South Street Bridge. Bikers, joggers and walkers can take the path up to the Art Museum and beyond.

For a bird’s-eye view of both rivers, try the new One Liberty Observation Deck, which occupies the 57th floor of one of the city’s tallest skyscrapers. The space offers 360 degree views, day and night.

At street level, it’s hard not to smile at Dilworth Park. Visitors of all ages delight in running – or watching people run – through the in-ground fountains on this renovated plaza outside City Hall.

Amenities include a small cafe and occasional programming like live music and outdoor movies.

Dilworth Park is also temporarily hosting Robert Indiana’s LOVE sculpture, as its regular home undergoes a complete overhaul across the street.

dependence Hall and the Liberty Bell. Timed tickets for the hall where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were signed are free, but plan ahead. A limited number are released each morning at the Independence Visitors Center, or they can be reserved in advance online ($1.50 fee per ticket).

Seeing the Liberty Bell is also free but does not require tickets.

However, the line can get long.

The back of the bell is visible through the pavilion windows without going inside, but you won’t be able to see the famous crack.

The other famous bronze in town – the Rocky statue – was actually a prop from the movie Rocky III. Fans usually have to wait in a quick-moving line at the foot of the Art Museum steps to take their picture with the fictional hometown fighter. Cynics, please note real Philly heavyweight champ Joe Frazier now has his own impressive statue at the sports complex.

Need a cheesesteak after all that sightseeing? Pat’s and Geno’s – those duelling South Philly landmarks – are open 24/7. You can also try Reading Terminal

Market, Jim’s on South Street and Tony Luke’s, which is somewhat off the beaten path. Note that many locals prefer roast pork sandwiches with sharp provolone and broccoli raab.

TIPS A pair of comfortable shoes will get you pretty much anywhere in Philadelphia’s extremely walkable downtown, known as Center City.

The Indego bike share program is popular and convenient, and there’s a good network of bike lanes.

The Philly Phlash shuttles visitors around for $2 per ride or $5 for an all-day pass. The Big Bus offers a more expensive tour with narration, and tickets allow you to hop on and off all day.

Quirkier options: Take a trolley tour to see some of the 4000 murals in the city. Or hop on a Segway for a novel way to travel to some hidden neighbourhood gems like the Magic Gardens, a breathtaking artistic creation.

Public transit in Philly, known as SEPTA, can be convenient, but its arcane payment system frustrates even city residents.

Plan ahead by either buying tokens or a one-day Independence Pass. Beware, though: tokens and

passes are not sold at every station, and machines don’t accept credit cards.

HANGING OUT Venture into the buzzing East Passyunk and Fishtown neighbourhoods for lively bars, BYOBs, gastro-pubs and unpretentious but world-class dining. The coffeehouse culture is strong, too, with many indie storefronts.

The phenomenon of beer gardens, which began popping up a couple of years ago, continues unabated.

The immensely popular openair spaces range from rooftops and restaurant patios to office building breezeways and reclaimed vacant lots landscaped by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.

But for the simplest respite, try one of the city’s original green spaces as laid out by founder William Penn.

Logan Circle has the beautiful Swann fountain with a gorgeous view of City Hall; Rittenhouse and Washington squares offer green lawns and park benches; and Franklin Square offers family fun with a carousel and minigolf.

Through June 12, Franklin Square hosts a Chinese lantern festival, featuring huge illuminated displays of a dragon, threestorey pagoda and more.

Hampstead on winning roll

Wakanui Blue, Hampstead and Hampstead-Collegians were in action in the men’s and women’s senior hockey divisions on Saturday, producing a mixed set of results.

While Wakanui Black had the bye after last Thursday’s Mid Canterbury derby, Wakanui Blue returned to action against Northern Hearts in Timaru.

It was always going to be a tough ask for Sam Moore’s Wakanui Blue against a solid Hearts side that took a 3-1 victory when the two sides last met in April, and, unfortunately for Blue, there was to be no upset in a 4-1 loss.

The defeat is Wakanui Blue’s sixth of the season, having recorded just one win over Tainui, and keeps them firmly at the foot

of the men’s division one points table.

In contrast, Hampstead boosted their lead at the top of the women’s division one ladder with a comfortable win over second placed Timaru Girls’ High School in a 4-1 victory.

Hampstead have won all but one of their six fixtures so far, the only blemish on an almost perfect record came in a 3-3 stalemate against fellow Mid Canterbury side Hampstead-Collegians, who had an afternoon to forget on Saturday.

Hampstead-Collegians were out to continue the fine form they showed against TGHS 1st XI last week, but Craighead proved too strong on the day and took a convincing 8-2 win to condemn the visitors to their third loss of the season.

Karen McAuley has helped Hampstead to a five from six record for the season.

Seemingly unstoppable, the Queensland Firebirds remain the only undefeated team in the transTasman netball championship after dispatching Adelaide Thunderbirds 62-51 in Brisbane. Yesterday’s win stretched the defending champion Firebirds’ winning streak to 21 games, with eight games played and five remaining in the 2016 regular season. Romelda Aiken led the way for the home team with 45 goals to pass 350 for the season.

Another loss for Tactix

Warriors test prop Ben Matulino and centre Blake Ayshford are set to be dropped and halfback Shaun Johnson is also under pressure in the wake of yet another spiritless team performance in Saturday night’s 38-12 NRL defeat to Canberra.

The seven-try shellacking to the Raiders was reminiscent of the limp 42-0 Anzac Day defeat to Melbourne, with the Warriors forwards unable to match the physicality of the bigger Raiders pack, and little desire or determination evident on defence up front and out wide.

Matulino – a two-time Warriors Player of the Year award winner – and Ayshford are likely to pay the price with a stint in reserve grade.

Other players may join them, but Johnson is likely to be given a chance to redeem himself following this week’s bye, when the Warriors take on the Brisbane Broncos at Mt Smart Stadium on June 4.

“There’s going to be a lot (of selection changes),” Warriors assistant coach Justin Morgan said yesterday.

“Nobody’s position is really safe.

“I know Shaun’s very frustrated with his lack of consistency. The coaching staff’s frustrated with it.

“I imagine his peers are frustrated with it too.

Firebirds ‘unstoppable’

pills and energy drinks scandal, Matulino was largely ineffective in a 51 minute stint that saw him make just 10 runs for 79 metres.

He was also caught out defensively close to the line as Joseph Leilua and Josh Hodgson snuck over for easy tries.

Johnson has struggled for form all season and despite scoring the Warriors’ first try, looked a

figure of frustration as he failed to stamp his mark on attack and struggled behind a beaten pack.

After impressing on debut in the round nine win over St George Illawarra, young prop Toafofoa Sipley is a leading contender to replace Matulino, but McFadden faces a bigger conundrum in solving the side’s playmaking problems and issues out wide.

The likes of in-form wing Ken Maumalo and five-eighth Ata Hingano are showing great promise in reserve grade, but the coaching staff are wary of throwing them into a side low on confidence with just four wins from 11 outings.

McFadden’s precarious position at the helm will also temper his desire to cull influential and senior players, and he is likely to back Johnson to rediscover his best form and hope he can lead the side’s resurgence.

“You’re backed into a corner a little bit in terms of who you can and can’t bring in,” Morgan said.

“We’ve got some younger guys in the squad, but at the same time in terms of their full NRL career, it might be career suicide throwing them to the lions so early.

“So sometimes you’ve got to drip-feed them. (But) we don’t want to crucify them.

“It’s a tough call to make in a fortnight but I imagine we’ll see some changes.”

Turnovers and a lack of defensive ball plagued the Mainland Tactix as they lost 73-52 to the New South Wales Swifts in Christchurch yesterday. Mwai Kumwenda netted 19 from 22 attempts at goal for a losing Tactix side. The Tactix were very good in the first quarter, but couldn’t sustain it with the Swifts, who have only lost once in this season’s trans-Tasman competition.

Maloney driving Sharks James Maloney’s NRL form has made him a shoo-in for NSW State of Origin selection, according to Cronulla and Blues skipper Paul Gallen. Maloney has been a key figure in Cronulla’s rise to the top of the NRL ladder midway through round 11 and is on the verge of forcing his way back into the Blues line-up for the first time since 2013. Gallen, who will play in his final Origin series this season, says Maloney’s form for the Sharks has made him an irresistible selection for coach Laurie Daley.

In brief Chiefs bounce back After stumbling into their bye on the back of defeat, the Chiefs found a much firmer footing to return to the top of the Super Rugby table on Saturday. Dave Rennie’s men rode an explosive first half to a bonus-point victory over the Rebels in Hamilton, offering enough evidence that their once-fearsome attack was almost back to its lethal best.

Blues scrape home Somehow the Blues managed to hang on to beat the Force and keep their faintest playoff hopes alive. And because their luck held out, their season isn’t over quite yet.

They can’t be considered a good bet to win any more games, but on the points table at least, they look like a contender.

Rakaia, Celtic into quarters

The business end of the Luisetti Seeds Combined Competition is upon us after the senior teams played their last round-robin fixtures on Saturday.

Two Mid Canterbury teams have progressed to the quarterfinals – both from section two.

After downing Ashley 24-15 on Saturday, Rakaia claimed second place on the section two ladder and booked a quarter-final showdown with section one’s third place finishers Lincoln.

Celtic also ended their roundrobin campaign on a high with a 21-0 thumping of Darfield, who have now missed out on a top four berth due to an inferior point’s differential to Ashley.

On their club day Celtic didn’t

disappoint a good crowd, and nullified everything that Darfield could throw at them, while taking their own chances when they arose.

First-five Nathan McCloy had a good day with the boot, despite having his conversion of Christian Vainerere’s first half try charged down; he opened the scoring with a penalty and added two more plus a conversion in the second half as the pressure told on the visiting side.

Shane Enright’s greens will now head to Cheviot where they will lock horns with Glenmark, who downed Saracens 27-6 in section one on Saturday.

The other quarter-final fixtures will pit unbeaten section one winners Southbridge against Ashley and section two winners

Waihora against Burn/Duns/Irwell.

This year’s trophy competition will see Saracens, Darfield, Kaiapoi and Oxford play for second tier honours.

Meanwhile, Mid Canterbury’s other three senior teams had a mixed set of results.

Hampstead produced a brave effort to push Kaiapoi to the end in a 24-22 loss.

The bonus point defeat brought Regan Broker’s team’s season tally to six losses and three wins.

They now head into the plate competition with Southern, who hammered Prebbleton 24-0, West Melton and Ohoka.

Methven’s dismal defence of their combined competition title continued with a 54-5 ham-

mering from top-of-the-table Southbridge.

It seemed somewhat cruel that Methven’s only hope of a win in the round-robin section rested on an away visit to the section’s dominant team.

Andy Pearce’s team will now contest for the bowl with Rolleston, Prebbleton and Hornby.

Hayne helps Fijians seal world series title Fiji won successive rugby sevens world series titles when it beat Australia 26-0 in its last pool match to reach the London quarter-finals at Twickenham yesterday.

Fiji needed only to make the playoffs, which it hasn’t missed this season, but put it in doubt

after losing a nervy opening pool match to England 31-10.

The Fijians took out their frustration on Wales, 42-5, then swatted aside Australia, fourth overall in the standings.

That ensured they finished second to unbeaten England in their pool, and couldn’t be caught by

second-place South Africa in the season standings.

Fiji clinched its third crown in the series’ 17-year history.

Code-hopper Jarryd Hayne, less than a week after retiring from the NFL, was substituted into all three pool matches.

France in the quarter-finals.

Lions hunt down Jaguares A strong second-half showing allowed the Lions to roar to a bonus-point 52-24 victory over the Jaguares and confirm their status as South Africa’s most likely contenders in Super Rugby this season. Wings Ruan Combrinck and Courtnall Skosan bagged two tries each as the Lions ran in eight at Ellis Park having led 19-9 at halftime. The Argentine side battled in the set-pieces and were starved of possession, but did get late tries through flyhalf Nicolas Sanchez, who also kicked four penalties, and scrumhalf Gonzalo Bertranou.

Trophy win hard-earned

Southern B have retained the Michael Duff Memorial Trophy after coming from behind to see off Celtic 29-19 at the Celtic grounds on Saturday.

In a battle of the Senior B competition’s top two teams, Celtic needed a bonus point win while denying Southern of a bonus point to go top of the ladder.

After a tightly contested first

half, Celtic headed in to the sheds with a 19-17 lead, but a resilient Southern dominated possession in the second stanza to keep their unbeaten record intact with seven wins from as many outings.

Southern B coach Andrew Carr said he expected a tough test against a strong Celtic team, but credited his players for a consistent opening round.

“We’re very proud of how the

boys played,” he said.

“Celtic played well, they’ve got some very fast backs that caused problems but we had a lot of possession.

“Our forwards really fronted up and our backs played well too.

“Our second five (Gideon Lambrechts) had a really good day and prop Jarrod Fowler delivered too.”

In the division’s other fixtures, Mt Somers snuck past a deter-

mined Allenton 20-17, while Collegiate won their mid-table battle with Hampstead 20-10 and Rakaia thumped basement team Methven 29-7.

The Senior B teams will now turn their attention to the Centennial Mug competition which kicks off next weekend with Hampstead hosting Celtic, Allenton travelling to Methven, Rakaia entertaining Mt Somers and Southern welcoming Collegiate.

Global Super Rugby not the best option

I

t seems inevitable Super Rugby will expand again but I wonder where the extra teams will come from and what it will do to the game in New Zealand at provincial level.

The All Blacks will always be strong and the desire to wear the black jersey will always be there.

But I can see a swathe of young twentysomethings below current Super Rugby level being picked up to help fill these new sides, wherever they will be.

That’s not necessarily a good thing for the game here.

I understand what New Zealand Rugby boss Steve Tew is saying about the need to expand.

After all, money makes the

world go round and New Zealand is a small market. If they were somehow able to crack into America, that would be huge because there’s no bigger market.

But we already have 18 teams and some of the games this season have been pretty average.

What would a Super 24 or a Super 30 look like? Could it even one day include sides from Europe?

The Chiefs had a pretty arduous travel schedule earlier this season, when they went from South Africa to Argentina to New Zealand and then Australia in four weeks.

Somehow they won all four but they have since had a series of injuries, many to key players, and are scrapping to keep their position on the table.

Player welfare needs to be a consideration.

If the competition adds more new teams, how long will it take for people to understand whatever new format they come up with?

It has taken a while for people to get their head around it this year, given you could have the second-highest number of points but sit fifth on the table.

There has been talk for many years about a global rugby season and I remember the idea of the best Super Rugby side taking on the European champions when I was playing. They have never been able to make it work.

There is merit in a global calendar, which would see internationals played on dates that work for

both hemispheres. It would make more sense for the Northern Hemisphere to switch to playing in summer because the winters up there can be pretty ordinary.

Much as it’s a cool story, I can’t see Jarryd Hayne making it to the Rio Olympics with the Fiji sevens team.

It’s just too hard to go from league to American football then sevens in a short space of time.

It’s a different skill-set and a totally different type of fitness – just ask Sonny Bill Williams and Liam Messam.

You could probably find several club players in Fiji who would be better options. It would also be a kick in the teeth for the Fijian player who missed out to accommodate Hayne.

From initially being reluctant to stay beyond 2017, Steve Hansen may soon be given a contract offer to stay as All Blacks coach until the next World Cup. No offer has yet been made but New Zealand Rugby chief executive Steve Tew says discussions have reached the stage where they are getting into the fine detail.

When Hansen said immediately after the last World Cup that he wasn’t sure about staying beyond his current contract, his biggest concern was that it might not be the right for the team.

Since he went public with that view, leading players and the NZR have been clear that they want Hansen to take the team through to the 2019 World Cup in Japan.

Hansen was also unsure about whether it would be the right thing for him and his family but, again, having given it ample thought, it would seem he is ready to make the commitment.

“We are talking to Steve as we speak and the sooner [we get it sorted] the better, but these things always take a bit of time and we need to make sure it’s right for both parties,” Tew said.

“We are working through that carefully but I think the time frame is relatively short.

“Steve has indicated that staying on to 2019 is something he would seriously consider.

“It seems that it’s right for him and his family and I think he’s getting the vibes from our side and the players that they would like him to be around.

“In the end, that is probably the most important thing. Is it right for the team for Steve to be here for a further two years and what does that mean for the rest of the management team and other coaches who are aspiring?”

While Tew says the time frame to conclude a deal will most likely be relatively short, the devil may yet be in the detail.

Having been at the helm since 2012, Hansen is the most successful coach currently employed in test football.

His record and the standing of the All Blacks are such that he should, in theory, be the highest paid coach in the world.

But NZR have been reluctant in the past to push their coaching salaries in line with other markets where the likes of England coach Eddie Jones and Wales coach Warren Gatland are believed to be paid around $800,000 a season.

“We want him to stay,” said Tew. “Now it’s just a matter of getting the agreement in place.

“We don’t have an urgency around this. It’s something we can work through carefully.

“We are keen to keep Steve. He’s the best in the world.

“It’s just a matter of getting the terms right.”

Bad day for senior teams

Mid Canterbury United were held to a 1-1 draw by lowly Selwyn FC at Foster Park on Saturday, which cost them their place at the top of the Robbies men’s division two ladder.

Mid Canterbury were heavy favourites to take three points heading in to the clash against a Selwyn outfit that have failed to win this season.

put United ahead in the first half but Selwyn levelled proceedings in the second.

The draw has sent United down to fourth on 16 points, one point adrift of Coastal Spirit, Halswell and FC Twenty Bombers, who are all on 17 points.

Meanwhile, Saturday did not get any better for Mid Canterbury United Masters.

In a second against third place battle, United were sunk 3-0 by Western.

The depleted United team, who could only muster 11 players on the day, trailed 1-0 at half time before conceding twice more in the game’s second stanza due to two dismal defensive errors.

The defeat sees the Mid Canterbury side fall from second place to third on the masters ladder.

Mid Canterbury’s senior ladies team also had a forgettable outing yesterday with a 2-1 loss

to Western Boom at McFarlane Park in their women’s division one tie.

The win propelled Boom into fourth place while United fell to fifth.

Some solace will be taken by local football fans from Mid Canterbury’s social ladies team, who posted the club’s only senior win of the weekend in a hard fought 3-2 victory over Ferrymead at Barnett Park in Christchurch.

Slade goes back to back After waiting eight years for his maiden Supercars win, Holden’s Tim Slade has made it two victories in as many days at Winton Motor Raceway. The Brad Jones Racing driver claimed the win after a thrilling 200km race yesterday, finishing more than six seconds clear of defending series champion Mark Winterbottom.

Slade used strategy and some luck to get to the front of the race after qualifying fourth, but wasn’t headed once he came out in front after the final round of pit stops. Shane Van Gisbergen never threatened for the lead but did enough to finish a creditable fourth.

Mourinho set for Man United gig By steve tongue Jose Mourinho will be appointed Manchester United manager next week to replace Louis van Gaal, British media have reported.

The 53-year-old Portuguese will take over at United, according to the reports, even though van Gaal, who steered United to a 2-1 extra-time win over Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final at Wembley yesterday, has a year left on his contract.

Mourinho, sacked by Chelsea in December after his second spell in charge of the west London club, has also managed Porto, Inter Milan and Real Madrid.

The UK’s Daily Telegraph reported that the deal to bring Mourinho to Old Trafford was reached at the end of last week with an official announcement due in the next few days.

The BBC added that some senior figures at United were known to have serious reservations about the prospect of appointing Mourinho, with some preferring van Gaal’s assistant, Ryan Giggs, as an alternative.

Asked about his future at a news conference after the final, the Dutchman pointed at the FA Cup in front of him.

“I show you the Cup,” he said.

“And I don’t discuss it with my friends of the media, who already sacked me for six months.

“Which manager can do what I have done? I don’t want to talk about leaving the club.”

Van Gaal preferred to dwell on the positives from a season in which United won their first trophy since 2013 and brought in some promising young players but came one place lower in the Premier League, finishing fifth behind Manchester City on goal difference and missing out on the Champions League.

There has also been regular criticism from the club’s supporters about a style of play that brought only 49 goals in the Premier League – their lowest total since 1989-90.

“I said when I started that we were in transition,” van Gaal added.

The defiant Dutchman suggested he was already planning new signings for next season.

“Every year we want to improve. It is not so easy when United come for a player,” he said.

“When United come the price is double or much more.”

Raptors halt Cavs’ run The Cleveland Cavaliers’ barnstorming run through the NBA Playoffs has finally hit a speed bump with the Toronto Raptors scoring a big win yesterday. The Raptors triumphed 99-84 on their home court to cut Cleveland’s lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference Finals series to 2-1. It was the Cavaliers’ first loss of the playoffs.

New Zealand had a double presence in the final, with promising 21-yearold Hawkes Bay paddler Aimee Fisher finishing eighth.

Estreich key part of success

By Matt MarkhaM Greg Hope paid tribute to an often unheard of factor in the success of many of New Zealand’s best horses after the win of Enghien at Addington on Saturday.

Kerry Estreich isn’t a name that many people would instantly recognise, but the Mid Canterbury horseman is an integral part of many stables around the Canterbury region.

Estreich is the farrier for the Greg and Nina Hope stable, and also does the shoeing work for Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen as well as a number of others and plenty of trainers speak highly of his talents.

“Kerry does a fantastic job, and he’s constantly looking at ways to improve horses through shoeing.

“The work he’s done with Enghien has been a massive part of the reason he’s been going so well.

“His gait wasn’t perfect but Kerry’s worked on him and got him trotting great at the moment.

“He still reckons he can get more speed out of him too, but we won’t be changing the way he’s been shod at the moment.”

The son of Love You announced himself as the best trotter in the land with his victory in the Lone Star Riccarton Sires’ Stakes 2YO Trot.

He overcame a tricky inside of the second line barrier draw which left him spotting rival, and race favourite, Habibi Inta up to 15 lengths at the one mile, but Ricky May never panicked and cautiously moved forward to find parked heading into the back straight the last time.

“He trotted a lot better once I got him out and rolling,” May said.

good effort to get around them and still win like he did.”

After drawing level with Habibi Inta at the 400 metre mark, Enghien cleared out at the top of the straight and waltzed his way

“His staying ability is quite impressive,” Hope said.

“He just loves to keep on rolling, Ricky summed him up perfectly.”

In winning, the Hope and Richard Dellaca, who own the gelding, not only picked up the $29,000 winning prize but also claimed the right to wear the Harness Jewels colours at Cambridge on June 4 – giving the stable their second Jewels leader with Monbet also donning the canary yellow.

Custodian, who will join the stable of Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen after being sold, was the best of the beaten brigade in second while Heavyweight Hero continued his turnaround in form with a strong third.

Habibi Inta faded late to finish in fourth position.

Richardson keen for Riccarton revenge Trainer Graham Richardson has his eye on a major road trip for promising sprinter Los Vargas following the mare’s gritty winning performance at Te Rapa on the weekend.

The dominant display by the lightly raced four-year-old made it an early double for the popular Matamata conditioner after Eprouvez had scored at outside odds in the first race on the card.

Richardson had felt confident about the chances of Los Vargas leading into the Nabby’s Boxing Gym sponsored 1200 metre contest until the rain arrived on Friday which saw the Te Rapa track come up a Slow9 on race morning.

“I thought she looked the main winning chance on paper when the fields first came out as I knew I had her in good shape but when the rain came it did dent my confidence a little,” he admitted.

“I said to her owners before the race that it would only be the track that would beat her but thankfully she handled it okay and proved too good for them.”

Handled to perfection by apprentice Shaun McKay, Los Vargas bounced straight to the lead from the barriers and led her pursuers a merry chase throughout the contest.

Angled to the middle of the track the mare found a good kick in the run home and dashed

away to win untouched by five lengths in a comfortable 1.12.16 for the 1200 metre journey.

“I had said to Shaun to try and steer her into the better going in the straight but he had already walked the track and knew exactly where he wanted to be,” said Richardson.

“She definitely doesn’t like it wet but being at Te Rapa the surface is so good when it rains that she got through it okay.”

Richardson is undecided about the mare’s immediate future however he does have plans for a trip south in the spring.

“We had her all ready to go down to Riccarton during Cup Week last year but she wouldn’t

get on the plane,” he said.

“She went off and managed to injure herself so we had to put her away for a few months.

“Thankfully it wasn’t anything too serious but it did have some benefit as she really grew up during the break and is a lot better these days.

“She still is a very tough customer but she has matured to the point where she is a lot more manageable now.

“I’m dead keen to take her back to Christchurch in the spring, however this time she will be going by road. Getting her black type is our main aim and those sprint features in Cup Week will definitely be to her liking.” - NZME

Top jumper returns Classy steeplechaser Wells is ready for a return to the big jumps after an absence of almost two years.

Parker’s toughest test

BY PATRICK MCKENDRY In the aftermath of his unanimous decision victory over Carlos Takam, a fight which took him to new depths in almost every way, Joseph Parker announced he was ready to take on Anthony Joshua for the IBF world heavyweight title.

Now that Parker is mandatory challenger, the fight will happen in London and probably early next year – providing Joshua retains his title, as expected – and this hardearned victory over Takam in Manukau on Saturday night will have proved to most that Parker is up to it.

Takam was easily the toughest man he has ever fought, with only two losses in a 36-fight professional career.

In fact, Joshua has never fought anyone of Takam’s ability.

Parker has also never gone beyond 10 rounds before.

But, most significantly of all, he has never had to soak up the punishment he did during this 12-round war, and particularly in the fifth round, when he was wobbled but recovered superbly.

“I back myself against any fighter that I fight in the ring with ... Joshua is the IBF champion of the world,” Parker said, sweat still rolling down his face in the dressing room. “When the opportunity comes we’ll take it and I feel like it’s our time.”

To get to this point, Parker was put through the toughest of tests by the 35-year-old Cameroon fighter.

However, he said he felt he wasn’t in as much trouble in the fifth as many thought.

“I didn’t feel I was in trouble. A lot of the punches that he threw missed. There were stages that he caught me ... but I refocused.”

Parker regrouped and launched an incredible assault in the eighth round, one that Takam somehow withstood.

Asked what it felt like hitting Takam, Parker said: “It felt like he had a very solid head.

“He’s been in the ring with some big names. It was 12 rounds of war, really. I learned a lot from this fight.

“I felt like I had him in the eighth round, I hit him with some good shots to the head.

“But the only thing I forgot to do was go to the body ... when I got excited I went to the head.”

Trainer Kevin Barry, sitting alongside Parker, said: “We’ve been taking little steps over the last three years but I’ve got to say, this was not a little step.

“This was a real guy.

“I tried to prepare everybody and tell you that Joe was going to have to dig deeper than he ever had before – he dug deeper than he ever has before.

“Joe would learn more from this fight than in his previous 18 fights.

“I’m very proud of him because he had to weather some storms, some very vicious rounds for him.

“The great thing for me was hearing that all three judges voted for Joe. “There was no controversy, even the French judge ... we sort of thought he would vote for Takam,

but even he had Joe winning by four points.”

Like many of his supporters at the seething Vodafone Events Centre, Barry was worried at times.

“I said at the end of the ninth round that ‘this is real heavyweight boxing’,” Barry told Parker.

“I said ‘you belong here, I need these next three rounds. You’re going to win these next three rounds and you’re going to start by winning round 10’, which I thought he won.

“It showed me that Joseph Parker does belong with the top heavyweights in the world.”

Asked about Parker weathering Takam’s storm, Barry replied: “That was another of the questions that was answered today.

“Everybody was asking what’s Joe going to be like when he’s hit on the chin – not once or twice, but plenty of times.

“I think you can see there’s nothing wrong with the chin of Joseph Parker.”

Lethargic start again costly

Week five of Ashburton College’s Crusaders region UC Championship campaign bore plenty of resemblance to its predecessors – a frustratingly lethargic start, which left a gap too wide to bridge.

College played host to a Waimea side that they had beaten in preseason, but found themselves 14-0 behind after little more than ten minutes.

Waimea prop Josh Moorehouse crossed over first to mark his 25th

appearance in style and wing Culainn Stringer duly converted from an awkward angle before touching down for a try of his own moments later and adding the extras.

If College were to create anything in the opening quarter, number eight Elama Touli would have been the catalyst, but the well-drilled Waimea kept him well under control.

Waimea left wing Logan Lawson then limped off the field after suffering a twisted ankle to be replaced by Justin Barr,

who would later add to College’s woes.

Things went from bad to worse for College with 15 minutes played as centre Michael Stringer crossed over unchallenged in the corner to push out Waimea’s lead to 19-0.

Stringer failed to convert but the damage had already been done.

College returned to the fray with more aggression in the second half, but conceded again as replacement left wing Barr dotted down for the visitors’ fourth try of

the afternoon to secure the bonus point.

Stringer then added three more points to Waimea’s haul from a penalty to give his team an unassailable 27-0 lead, but with 20 minutes left to play, the College team finally came to life.

Fullback Weston Bartlett crossed over for College’s first try of the encounter and converted, before Touli’s solid work throughout the tie was rewarded with a try.

Bartlett was on target from the conversion to bring the scoreline

to 27-14, and College weren’t finished yet, as Ricus Van Zeyl added a third.

Bartlett’s third conversion of the match brought College within seven points of Waimea at 27-21 to secure a bonus point, but that will be of little consolation after another frustrating day for the 1st XV’s connections.

The College faithful will hope being away from home comforts will ignite their season when they visit St Thomas and Burnside respectively in their next two outings.
