Forecast cut; but profit up

Fonterra has cut its forecast for full-year earnings per share while maintaining its projected milk payout.

At the same time Fonterra downgraded its forecast it released its first-half results yesterday, which showed revenue climbed 9 per cent to $9.2 billion.

The dairy exporter cited volatility in returns from ingredients, tightening margins and a projected increased milk supply in the autumn as reason for the downgrade in its forecast share earnings.

Per-share earnings are forecast at 45 cents to 55 cents while the farmgate milk price payout was affirmed at $6 per kilogram of milk solids, giving a forecast available for payout of $6.45 to $6.55 before retentions for a fully shared-up farmer.

It had previously projected per-share earnings of 50 to 60 cents for a payout of $6.50 to $6.60 before retentions.

“The impact of more volatility in product stream returns in our Ingredients business, some tightening of margins in the coming months, and the potential for extra milk in the autumn could result in some pressure on our earnings in the second half,” chairman John Wilson said, in a statement.

“The board considered these factors and, while continuing to have confidence in achieving a target dividend of 40 cents per share, has revised the forecast earnings per share range to 4555 cents to reflect the additional volatility.”

“We remain positive but cautious, and this is reflected in our interim dividend of 20 cents per share and our February decision to increase the advance cash rate paid to farmers earlier in the season.”

The interim dividend will be paid in April.

New-entrants teacher farewelled

Allenton School farewelled longserving teacher Marie Batty in a special assembly yesterday morning.

Students from the junior school, parents and former teachers attended to farewell the new-entrant teacher who had served at the school for 28 years.

“I won’t miss the alarm clock going off at 6am, the meetings at 8am and having to write reports on the weekend,” she said.

“What I will miss, however, is the children, as they are the reason we teach; working with the parents, as well as my colleagues, the creative and inven-

tive spelling we often see and, of course, the school holidays.”

Deputy-principal Fiona Maw had a few words to say about Batty.

“Thank you Marie for the exceptional teaching you do every day and the wonderful relationships you form with everyone in our community,” she said.

“You have had a wonderful career and so many children have benefited from your expertise.”

Batty started her teaching career in Hokitika in 1972, before moving to Porirua for two years.

She returned to Ashburton and worked at Hampstead School, and as a part-time teacher, reading tutor and bus driver at Hinds

School. She then started at Allenton School in 1989 working in the senior school.

She took over her first newentrant class after returning from a year spent teaching in England in 1999, and was a newentrant teacher from that point onwards.

“The biggest change I have seen is probably the transition from pen and paper to electronics,” she said. “The students no longer need books as everything they need is just saved away.

“I am going to do some travel and probably a fair bit of work in the garden, but I certainly hope to be back at the school relieving.”

Members of the Crusaders’ team will be in town at the A&P Showgrounds as part of the

Running for an hour, beginning at 4pm, kids will have the chance to take part in drills and learn some skills from players.

There will also be opportunity for signings and giveaways, and

for fans who have written letters, designed posters or gotten all dressed up in their red and black gear to show off their designs to the players.

Jayden Butler is one of those fans who has the signs of his support ready to go.

Having fallen and broken both his arms, he took the misfortune as an opportunity to show his love for his favourite team.

After breaking his arms, red and black casts were a must, said his mother, Margaret.

“He has been playing rugby

for seven years and has been a Crusaders’ fan forever,” she said.

“He attends every home game and goes to every fan meet-ups whenever he can, with one of the highlights of the meet-ups getting his casts signed by the players.”

Watch out for the backflow

Sue Nicholson drew plenty of laughter and tears from the audience at her Ashburton show last night.

The New Zealand psychic medium and television personality is used to this reaction though, it happens every time she gets on stage during the current Answers From The Other Side tour.

Speaking at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre yesterday afternoon, before the show, Nicholson was looking forward to helping local people.

“I ask everyone to come with an open mind,” she said.

“My shows are really about teaching them as well and (explaining) how the spirit wants to communicate and bringing spirits through and bringing confirmation.”

She has been working fulltime as a psychic medium for more than 30 years and published her biography, A Call From The Other Side in 2007.

Nicholson has been a regular psychic on the television show Sensing Murder since it began, and features in the current series playing on TVNZ 2.

“I do enjoy it,” she said. “There are critics, but it’s called ‘sensing’ murder; I just do my job and

As the Ashburton District Council checks the condition of waste water pipes in several streets in both areas of town, council assets manager Andrew Guthrie said homeowners need to take a simple precaution that could prevent a nasty accident.

While inspection will not involve pipes into individual homes, clearing work carried out ahead of the main pipe inspections could result in possible backflow of wastewater down side lines.

“Council routinely checks our infrastructure to ensure it is in proper working order. It also allows us to determine our forward working programme, should parts of the infrastructure require maintenance,” he said.

Inspections are taking place in various streets in Allenton and Netherby, before starting in Methven. Property occupiers in the affected streets will be notified directly prior to the works in their street.

The pipes will be inspected using CCTV with work starting yesterday. The project is expected to be wrapped up by April 13.

Restorative justice – results positive

Most victims who participate in restorative justice report positive benefits, according to the results of a survey released by the Ministry of Justice yesterday.

Restorative justice conferences are face-to-face meetings between victims and offenders which provide an opportunity for both parties to discuss the crime and harm caused.

The 2016 Victim Satisfaction Survey found 75 per cent of vic-

tims who participated found the process beneficial. That figure jumped to 86 per cent when applied to the victims of family violence.

The Ashburton Restorative Justice service, managed by Safer Ashburton, was one of the first in the country and has been recognised as highly successful. It participated in the recent survey.

Co-ordinator Toni Sowman said the process was beneficial to both the victim and the offender.

“They both share their own

story and the opportunity is there for the offender to apologise to the victim, which would not usually take place in the courtroom,” she said.

“The offender is able to see the impact of his or her offending through the eyes of the victim – which is also something they would not normally be aware off, let alone consider.”

Sowman said victims were often relieved to learn they were not specifically targeted, but rather fell prey to opportunistic offend-

ing. “The majority of victims who participate are grateful for the opportunity to participate and find it very helpful,” she said.

“The same can be said for the offenders – they will say they were initially nervous about meeting their victims but embraced the process and allowed them to see their offending through different lenses.”

Last month Sowman received more than 30 referrals through the district court, double the usual number. Of those, about 65 per

cent would proceed to a conference.

Other findings of the survey showed 84 per cent of respondents were satisfied with the restorative justice conference they took part in, up from 82 per cent in 2011.

Recent findings demonstrated restorative justice reduced reoffending. From 2008 to 2013 reoffending rates for those who participated in the service within 12 months was 15 per cent lower than comparable offenders who did not participate.

ANZ workers do good for the community

Ashburton ANZ staff took a day off work on Tuesday to get stuck into voluntary work in their local community.

Each year, staff across the

country donate one work day to help in their community, providing more than 15,000 work hours.

In Ashburton, 23 staff, from personal banking, business banking, commercial and agri-

division and private banking, were all involved on Tuesday.

They were hard at work with the Ashburton District Council at Argyle Park, planting along Mill Creek, levelling soil and regrassing along the newly paved

walkways. Ashburton ANZ staff were also working with CanBead to help sort beads and wires.

And, in July, it will be donating lunch hours to deliver Meals on Wheels for one week.

Key delivers farewell speech John Key has delivered his final speech to Parliament – declaring himself a pragmatist whose principles were shaped by his mother Ruth, and paying special tribute to his family.

“This place is like no other. It is all consuming, life changing,” Key told a packed chamber that included his wife Bronagh and children Max and Stephie.

Key’s speech was often humorous but also covered serious subjects – the loss of New Zealand troops overseas, and being told of people in body bags soon after the Christchurch earthquakes.

Key also directly addressed the families of the Pike River miners, saying his government had been fully committed to re-entering the mine but that had proven impossible.

He said he was proud of his Government’s achievements,

which he said included economic reforms, the support of the film industry – “without which the Hobbit would have been filmed in London” – lifting benefits, cycleways, and the completion of Treaty settlements.

Disappointments in politics were “inevitable”, Key said, and he still held the view that a new flag for the country would have been a significant step in the country’s history.

“I regret that TPP did not get over the line ... trade has helped millions of people get out of poverty ... I hope that one day the Kermadecs will be an ocean sanctuary.”

Key said Parliament could be a tough place that took MPs away from their families.

However, he recalled one trip to China when Max and Stephie were able to accompany him for some sightseeing.

When they got to Tiananmen Square Max asked where everyone was.

“I realised the entire square had been emptied for my benefit.”

Key said he came to Parliament on a different path to most other MPs – from Wall Street and not via previous involvement with the party.

His political views were shaped by mother Ruth – “a no nonsense woman who refused to take no for an answer”. He recalled coming home as a teenager to say he was leaving school to become a horse trainer. His mum told him no, and that was that.

“I don’t think she would last long in a coalition government.”

Key said he was by nature a pragmatist and not an ideologue. Some people had said that showed a lack of clear principles,

Key said, but that wasn’t true. He got his from his upbringing and not a “politics 101 text book”.

His basic belief was that most New Zealanders shared the same aspirations – wanting the best for their children and family.

Key ended his speech by paying special tribute to his family, telling his children he knew the “harsh spotlight” his career had at times put on them, and telling Bronagh she had been his main support.

He had few regrets in life, but one was that his mother had not lived to “see how it all turned out”.

“It has been a privilege, an honour and a blast. Goodbye and good luck,” Key told the chamber who rose to their feet in applause. MPs from all political parties lined up to shake his hand.

New Zealand Post is increasing the price to send letters and parcels as the amount of mail being sent continues to fall. The company said letter volumes were declining significantly with around 60 million fewer sent a year. Because of this, the cost of sending a medium-sized letter within New Zealand by FastPost would be increasing by 50 cents from $1.80 to $2.30 from July 1. Prices for all FastPost letters, along with some courier, international and business products, international air parcels and bulk mail would also increase.

Standard Post prices would remain unchanged in 2017. Saturday delivery surcharges would increase 20c, and the rural delivery surcharge will increase 50c. NZME

Gunman arrested Police have arrested a 30-yearold Otara man who allegedly threatened police officers with a firearm following a pursuit on Monday morning. The man was allegedly driving a vehicle which failed to stop for a routine police check on Bairds Road in Otara at about 4.40am. The man is now facing charges of using a firearm against law enforcement officers, two counts of aggravated burglary, possession of methamphetamine for supply, reckless driving and failure to stop for police. Not all the charges relate to Monday’s incident. The man will appear in the Manukau District Court today.

Tinwald School is preparing a day to raise awareness for child cancer, and have a bit of fun in the process.

The main event of the day will be an extra assembly at the end of the school day on April 13.

Student, Courtney Ross, will be having her hair shaved off, her first major haircut having had only small trims in the past.

The eight years’ worth of hair will be donated to Freedom Hair, a Dunedin based organisation with the purpose of creating wigs for children and adults

who have suffered hair loss due to medical reasons such as cancer treatment or alopecia.

Also taking a seat in the barber’s chair will be the school’s principal, Peter Livingstone.

Livingstone will also be having his head completely shaved, with his wife doing the honours.

All students will take part in mufti-day following the theme of crazy hair/crazy wigs and the best dressed will be awarded prizes by the student council.

Students will be allowed to colour their hair, make crazy hats or coloured headbands as part of their looks.

Changing to meet a new car world

The country of origin might change, even the name on the vehicle might change, but there’s one thing that won’t change and that’s the brand on the vehicle, says Holden’s managing director Kristian Aquilina.

In Ashburton yesterday he talked about the changing world of motoring, a world where the Holden king, the V8 was making way for smaller, more efficient cars and where manufacturing was moving from niche to global.

And that change was inevitably coming with accompanied collateral damage, in this case the closure of car assembly plants across Australia. Those plants, once a critical player in Australia’s manufacturing scene are transferring their business to Asia, Europe and America.

“We’re going through a very

large transition at the moment.

Our brand is one Kiwis associate strongly with Commodore, V8s and racing at Bathurst, but the large car market, the one we’ve been traditionally successful in, continues to shrink and we’re now at an interesting pivotal point,” Aquilina said.

That pivotal point involved both smaller cars and the growing SUV market, he said.

With its large car market dwindling, it made sense for GM to close Holden’s Australian plants, but it would retain a large team of engineers and vehicle testers to ensure vehicles coming out of other markets were adapted to Australian and New Zealand driving conditions.

“They’ll be the same vehicles in Australia and Asia but with a different set up for our roads. It’ll be more than just slapping the Holden badge on.”

GM as a corporation was in bankruptcy not long ago and now it’s into a time of revision, Aquilina said.

“We’ve started investing in the future. Our new production will define our future; we’re going through a product renaissance.

Our racing car image that we were rusted onto was getting in the way of us moving forward.”

New Zealand’s car buying public would see the first of the new V6 Commodores next year and it would be accompanied by a V4 model.

“The Holden brand will continue to work and to grow, but in other directions and in very unexpected ways.”

Some of those ways would include self-drive vehicles, electric vehicles and car and ride sharing models, he said.

“But it might be a little while before Ashburton gets into this.”

Ready for King Charles?

King Charles III and Queen Camilla. Are you ready?

Last week a detailed report revealed exactly what will happen when the Queen dies, the Guardian reported, including the use of a secret code to prevent news leaking out before officials have been notified.

From there a plan will kick off to alert the world that the longest-serving head of state has died.

But when the time comes, is the world ready for Charles to take the throne, and for Camilla to be by his side as Queen?

Contrary to popular opinion, Charles – the world’s most patient trainee with the hardest act on the planet to follow – will be king.

Just as Queen Elizabeth became the new monarch upon the death of her father, King George VI – on February 6, 1952, while she was on tour in Kenya – Charles will be King from the moment

his popular son Prince William was fanciful.

“It’s not a popularity contest,” Ellis said. “The heir to the throne does not renounce their right to succession.

“Charles will be king.”

Ellis said the idea of Charles renouncing his right to the throne may have its roots in the abdication of the Queen’s uncle Edward VIII, which left his brother – the Queen’s father – to be king.

The event took place in 1936, and was a “constitutional crisis” for the monarchy.

But Ellis said Edward VIII was a “reluctant” vacated of his rightful inheritance and that times had changed since an English king had to abdicate before marrying a twice divorced woman such as Wallis Simpson.

“It was an issue then because the king is also the head of the Church of England,” he said.

A police spokesman said the man was arrested in Bishopdale after police were called at 2.11pm yesterday to an incident

Man’s hand cut off at meatworks A man who had just started work at a meat processing plant has had his hand cut off.

Worksafe is investigating Friday morning’s accident at the Alliance Smithfield Plant in Timaru.

NZ Meat Workers Union Canterbury secretary Bill Watt said senior management at Alliance Smithfield confirmed one of their employees had “severed his hand below the wrist”.

Watt said the man had just started working at the plant, and it appeared he was working with “some kind of auger” at the time.

“It may have been his fourth day there. He was working by himself.

“Any injury like this is life-changing and horrific, you cringe just thinking about it.”

Watt said senior management at Alliance Smithfield had called him on Monday, and said they would be launching an independent investigation.

A St John spokesman said the man, in his 40s, was taken to Timaru Hospital.

A WorkSafe spokeswoman said they are investigating so were unable to provide any further information.

We should be pushing for transparency

hat mistakes are made and innocent people die in warzones is an established, somewhat acccepted and tragic fact.

But that the New Zealand Defence Force would cover up its role in a horrific attack on civilians in two Afghan villages in 2010 is not acceptable.

The allegations broke on Tuesday evening with the launch of an explosive new book co-authored by investigative journalists Nicky Hager and Jon Stephenson.

In Hit and Run, they claim New Zealand SAS troops instigated a botched raid in which six civilians died, then bolted leaving15 injured, in retribution for the death of Lieutenant Tim O’Donnell at the hands of insurgents.

To put it in context, O’Donnell was the first Kiwi to die in combat in Afghanistan and emotions were running high.

At the time the Government of the day claimed insurgents were the only casualties. Leader John Key emphatically denied knowledge of any civilian deaths at the hands of Kiwi soldiers; as well he might – given he “green-lighted” the attack in the first place.

Whether Key knew or not, something smells very fishy here.

Hager is not a man to shoot from the lip. He and Stephenson spent a lot of time gathering and cross referencing facts. They claim their sources had close ties to military and government.

Of critical significance is a quote attributed to former defence minister Wayne Mapp, who supposedly spoke of the raid in question as “our biggest and most disastrous operation, a fiasco”.

Yesterday, the Defence Force responded by scuttling behind its 2011 statement, reiterating the claim of civilian causalities had been investigated and dismissed as unfounded.

Hager was dumbfounded by this disclaimer. He wants a wider investigation.

As the debate raged yesterday, the face of three-year-old Fatima – an innocent victim at the heart of the allegations caught our attention.

For Fatima, and the other victims, we can’t wash our hands of the allegations of a war crime.

We must back Hager in demanding transparency. After all if it happened once, it could happen again.

Felicity What about a roadside flag system. Like a bright yellow flag for a controlled burn, so the public driving past would know it is a controlled burn. No flag and they can call 111. Then an education campaign to educate the public on the meaning of the flag. Also for 111 staff, training should include a standard set of questions if a wildfire is reported. Are you near the fire, is it in the distance, what direction...then they can check it against a national database of authorized burns, call the nearest authorized burn and ask them if there is other smoke in the area...? That’s a harder one.

Families sue Saudi Arabia Hundreds of relatives of those killed on September 11 have sued Saudi Arabia, joining many others who have tried to hold the kingdom responsible for the attacks.

Like other recent actions, the lawsuit filed on Monday capitalises on last year’s decision by Congress to let victims of such attacks on US soil to sue state sponsors. It seeks unspecified damages.

The personal injury and wrongful death suit, filed in US District Court in Manhattan, portrays Saudi Arabia as an essential player in funding al-Qaeda from start to finish in the attacks on September 11, 2001 that killed nearly 3000 people in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.

Through several Saudi government-controlled nonprofits – ostensibly raising money for charity – senior Saudi officials and al-Qaeda operatives instead sent millions of dollars through a tangled web of transfer offices and private businesses with al-Qaeda terrorists as final recipients, the lawsuit said according to News Day. Saudi Arabia used “staterun” groups to funnel money to the terrorist organisation and directed government employees, including diplomats, to help the 19 hijackers once they landed in the United

Relatives of those killed in the Twin Towers disaster are holding Saudi Arabia liable for the deaths.

States, according to the complaint.

Saudi Arabia funded safe houses for the hijackers, supplied them with bogus travel documents, weapons, cash and equipment – “all of which enabled al-Qaeda to conduct the September 11th attacks,” the complaint stated.

“We’re finally going to get our day in court,” said retired FDNY fire chief James Riches of Brooklyn, who is among the plaintiffs in the lawsuit.

Riches responded to ground zero on the day of the attacks and six months later carried out the body of his oldest son, Jimmy, an FDNY firefighter, from the Twin Towers wreckage.

they have nothing to worry about.”

Earlier attempts to hold Saudi Arabia responsible over the past 15 years have failed.

US law granting foreign nations broad immunity from lawsuits prevented attempts

by September 11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia in New York.

But last year, Congress overwhelmingly passed the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act permitting such lawsuits to proceed.

‘No new threat led to airline laptop limits’ US and British officials said yesterday the decision to bar laptops and tablets from the cabins of some international flights wasn’t based on any specific threat but on longstanding concerns about terrorists targeting jetliners.

Unimpressed, some travelers and civil liberties groups denounced the ban, raising concerns that included lost worktime on long flights and worries that checking laptops in baggage will make them more vulnerable to theft.

Under the new bans, electronic devices larger than smartphones, such as laptops, tablets and gaming devices, will have to be checked on some international flights.

American officials announced the US ban early yesterday, and the British followed later in the day after discussions between the countries.

The US ban affects flights from Amman, Jordan; Kuwait City, Kuwait; Cairo; Istanbul; Jeddah and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Casablanca, Morocco; Doha, Qatar, and Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. About 50 flights a day, all on foreign carriers, will be affected. Senior Trump

Bennet Waters, principal at the Chertoff Group, a Washington consulting firm, and a former senior official at the Homeland Security Department, said yesterday that threats to commercial aircraft have been evolving since before the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

He said when he was in the government, the threat to aircraft was “very clear, very consistent and it was very persistent”.

The new US and British rules for electronics appear to address an evolving threat.

The targeted airports are in a region where the terror threat has been elevated for several years.

The 10 airports singled out by the US may have been selected because screening equipment and procedures for carry-on luggage may not be effective enough to detect certain types of non-metallic explosive devices.

IRA leader, peacemaker, dies Martin McGuinness took up arms to fight British soldiers in the streets but ended up shaking hands with Queen Elizabeth II. A militant who long sought to unify Ireland through violence, he became a peacemaking politician who earned the respect, and even the friendship, of his former enemies.

McGuinness, who died on Tuesday at 66, was an Irish Republican Army commander who led the paramilitary movement toward reconciliation with Britain and went on to serve as Northern Ireland’s deputy first minister for a decade in a Catholic-Protestant power-sharing unity government.

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who worked with McGuinness to forge Northern Ireland’s 1998 peace accord, said “there will be some who cannot forget the bitter legacy of the war. And for those who lost loved ones in it, that is completely understandable”.

Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams said McGuinness was “a passionate republican who worked tirelessly for peace and reconciliation and for the re-unification of his country”.

Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny said McGuinness “will always be remembered for the remarkable political journey that he undertook in his lifetime. Not only did Martin come to believe that peace must prevail, he committed himself to working tirelessly to that end.”

But some who suffered at the hands of the IRA could not forgive.

Former British government minister Norman Tebbit, whose wife was paralyzed by an IRA bombing of a Brighton hotel in 1984, said he hoped that McGuinness was “parked in a particularly hot and unpleasant corner of hell for the rest of eternity.”

In brief Isolation ‘a violation’ US prosecutors and lawyers for infamous drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman are sparring over his tough jail conditions.

The defence has asked a judge to order Guzman released from solitary confinement at a highsecurity Manhattan jail where he’s been held since being brought to the United States in January.

His lawyers claim the isolation is violating his constitutional rights and causing his health to decline.

Smugglers sentenced Two men from India have been sentenced in federal court in New Jersey to prison time for their roles in a conspiracy to smuggle people into the United States. Authorities say 42-year-old Nileshkumar Patel and 67-year-old Harsad Mehta were each sentenced yestersday in Newark to 17 months in prison.

They both had previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to smuggle foreign nationals into the US for commercial advantage and private financial gain.

Lewis says investigators are examining whether to bring additional charges against the boy’s parents.

She was accused of child abuse for allegedly endangering her children.

Lewis said Lavarnia told police she placed her loaded gun on a bed within reach of her 2-year-old and 4-year-old sons while she turned to get a holster and that the 2-year-old shot her 9-year-old son.

Court records filed by police said the 9-year-old “was playing video games a few feet away”.

The father, 31-year-old Kansas Lavarnia, arrived home as police investigated the shooting and was arrested on suspicion of misconduct with a weapon for being a prohibited possessor with a gun in the family home, Lewis said.

He was barred from possessing guns because he had previously been convicted of theft and possessing burglary tools and completed a three-year prison sentence in 2012.

Authorities say he knew there was a gun in his home.

The only comments made by Kansas Lavarnia during his first court hearing were when he stated his full name and date of birth in response to a question.

He was ordered released on

his own recognisance because he isn’t accused of directly causing harm in the shooting of the 2-year-old, said Maricopa County Court Commissioner Paula Williams.

A review conducted by The Associated Press and the USA Today Network found that minors died from accidental shootings at their own hands, or at the hands of other children or adults, at a pace of one every other day during the first six months of 2016.

“It’s gun safety,” Jason Burns, a neighbour of the Lavarnias, told KPHO-KTVK-TV. “You need to keep it locked up and you need to educate your kids that this is not a toy.”

NZ companies linked to $21b rort Companies based in New Zealand were part of a criminal scheme to move large sums of money, including the transfer of $US21 billion out of Russia, according to a group of anti-corruption reporters.

The Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project said that reporters from the group and the Novaya Gazeta newspaper in Moscow obtained bank records showing that funds were transferred worldwide via 112 bank accounts in Eastern Europe. They shared the details of the scheme, dubbed Laundromat, with investigative reporters in 32 countries.

Members of the group say in a report published late Monday that they now know where the funds ended up and that banks allegedly refused to shut it down, despite warnings.

Organisers of the scheme created a core of 21 companies based in New Zealand, Cyprus and Britain, run by hidden owners and used by several Russian companies to move their money abroad.

All of the core companies appeared to be owned by proxies standing in for hidden owners, with fake directors and shareholders, though the reporters provided

no evidence to back the claims.

“Law enforcement agencies in Moldova, Latvia, Britain and Russia continue to investigate Laundromat, but attempts to bring those responsible to justice and to recover the money have been hampered in part by the reluctance of Russian officials to co-operate,” the group said on its website.

Energy Minister Judith Collins expects oil and gas exploration activity will return as margins start to improve.

She was launching the Government’s 2017 block offer for five offshore, two onshore, and one mix of on and offshore areas spanning 481,735 square kilometres, with bidders having until September 6 to lodge their applications. The tender follows a particularly weak year in 2016 when there was just one successful bid, by Todd Corp, for a permit in the Taranaki Basin.

That year there were four offshore and one onshore areas covering 525,515 sq km available in the tender.

“The global exploration and production industry is cyclical – the low number of permits granted in last year’s block offer reflects a significant downturn in the sector,” Collins said in a speech to a petroleum sector conference in New Plymouth. “However, activity in New Zealand and globally is expected to pick up as operator margins improve.”

Domestic exploration has dwindled after last year’s slump in global oil prices below $US30 a barrel made forays into remote parts of the world, such as New Zealand, less appealing for major international players.

Some $US1.2 billion was allegedly funneled through the Estonian branch of Denmark’s largest bank, Danske Bank, which acknowledged a “case of possible international money laundering” with illegitimate transactions at its Estonian branch in 2011-2014.

Danske Bank spokesman Flemming Pristed said security procedures had been “insufficient” but now had been improved.

Other banks, including Deutsche Bank, have since been fined for lax controls on money laundering schemes.

Reacting to the news, Danish Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen yesterday called the money laundering a disgrace.

“It makes me sad and angry,” he told Denmark’s TV2.

Velvetleaf reports worry Fed Farmers

Unconfirmed reports of sacksful of velvetleaf plants being removed from a Mid Canterbury farm has Federated Farmers worried.

Described as the “worst cropping weed in the world”, velvetleaf was first identified in the South Island in a North Canterbury fodderbeet crop in February last year.

By the end of summer 2016 it had been found in more than 123 Canterbury crops.

Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury arable spokesperson Joanne Burke said the weed had the potential to impact on crop yields up to 90 per cent and to decimate seed export industries.

She is critical of the response of the importer who brought the contaminated seed into the district in the first place and the Ministry of Primary Industry’s decision to cap funding surveillance operations at the end of last summer.

Instead the ministry opted to assist with the roll-out of personalised management plans, which put the onus back on individ-

ual farmers to identify the noxious plants, each capable of generating 17,000 seeds able to survive in the soil for 60 years.

While the reports of large-scale rogueing operations were not confirmed, Burke said it would not be surprising if velvetleaf had established as a result of shoddy management early in the incursion.

Despite an extensive education programme, media reports and public meetings the message did not get through to everyone, she said. Dairy cattle were moved from contaminated fodderbeet crops back on to dairy platforms and farmgate biosecurity measures did not kick in soon enough to prevent the spread of the weed.

MPI officials refused to disclose the whereabouts of infested crops, claiming they were bound by confidentiality constraints, preventing Federated Farmers from mounting an extensive autumn rogueing campaign.

All of which conspired to create the perfect storm for velvetleaf to establish and leaving farmers to pick up the tab, Burke said.

Dairy price rise surprises analysts MICHELLE NELSON AND NZME Dairy product prices lifted at the Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction, on the back of two straight declines, surprising agribusiness analysts who on Tuesday had predicted a further falloff.

The GDT price index rose 1.7 per cent to $US3101, in the fortnightly auction in which some 22,498 tonnes of product was sold, up from 22,328 at the previ-

ous auction. Whole milk powder gained 2.9 per cent to $US2855 a tonne.

“For the market to absorb the extra volume available and to pay a higher price for it is an outstanding result and a complete turnaround from a fortnight ago,” AgriHQ dairy analyst Susan Kilsby said in a note.

“Market fundamentals do support the higher [whole milk powder] prices but so often the dairy

markets are driven by sentiment.

“There has been a lot of negative sentiment in the market recently so this result marks a real turnaround in attitude.”

Butter prices rose 4.9 per cent, on the last auction a fortnight ago, to $US4910 a tonne.

Rennet casein increased 3.6 per cent to $US5927 a tonne.

Anhydrous milk fat gained 3 per cent to $US5799 a tonne.

Meanwhile, skim milk powder

sank 10.1 per cent to $US1948 a tonne.

“SMP remains a challenge to sell due to the large global stocks of this product,” Kilsby said. “All of the SMP offered last night by Arla Foods and Amul either didn’t sell or didn’t move off its starting price. Fonterra product fared a little better with its product generally selling but at low prices.

Ashburton Rose Group The Ashburton Rose Group held their monthly meeting at the Catholic Community Rooms on Wednesday March 8 at 7pm.

Kathy welcomed 11 members and we had apologies from 6 members.

Instead of having a speaker we had a Floral Art evening where members brought flowers and greenery to make flower arrangements.

At the end of the evening members had lovely ones to take home.

Next month we are going to the movies instead of having a meeting. This will be on Tuesday April 11.

Our evening finished with supper.

Ashburton Writers’ Group The March meeting of the Ashburton Writers’ Group was held recently.

Members wrote of wheat, peony, lilacs, lilies, roses and freesias.

The meeting concluded at 2.45pm with a word exercise about punctuation.

This caused some excellent debate, especially about the correct use of apostrophes.

The assignment for the April meeting is “I can hear you”.

Peter welcomed new committee member Elaine Busby.

He then asked for a show of hands to “accept” or “oppose” the proposed change of age of entitlement for NZ superannuation from 65 to 67 by 2037.

There was an overwhelming vote to oppose any change.

Peter then welcomed our speaker for the afternoon, Sharnie Warren – General Manager Marketing and Communications from Pulse and Grey Power Electricity.

40% of Grey Power households are members of Grey Power Electricity and the number is growing each day.

Sharnie outlined the many advantages of having a GPE plan, with its long term price protection and with the freedom to choose options that best suit the customer.

Her PowerPoint presentation was well received by members.

There were several interesting questions fielded.

Trevor Gamblin presented Sharnie with a tray of fruit and thanked her for the presentation.

The raffle was drawn and prizes distributed.

Bernard entertained on the organ while afternoon tea was served.

Mid Canterbury Men’s Friendship Club Annual Meeting which was held on Tuesday March 21 President Doug Anderson after inducting two new members presented his report for 2016-17 year with the membership loss of 16 members.

He said the year had been very successful with excellent speakers and very good bus trips.

Attendance had averaged around the 86 mark.

He thanked his committee for their contribution to a successful year.

Treasurer Carl gave the financial report stating as the finances were in a sound condition subs would remain the same for the coming year.

The election of officers was carried out with Ian Dent being elected as a new member, previous members being elected.

President Doug thanked Malcolm Tarbotton and Allan Tween who retired from the committee after many years contribution to our club.

Following morning tea our main speaker Jock Ross gave us a highy entertaining talk on his life as an All Black, Masters All Black, rugby tour conductor and story teller.

He was introduced by Malcolm Tarbotton and thanked by Roger Scammell.

President Roger closed the meeting with the singing of the national anthem.

Taumalolo signs $10m deal Free-to-air

By Warren Barnsley Jason Taumalolo has signed one of the longest contract deals in NRL history, keeping him at North Queensland until the end of the 2027 season.

The reigning Dally M medallist’s 10-year contract is believed to be worth $10 million, putting the 23-year-old lock forward among the game’s highest-paid players.

Cowboys football boss Peter Parr said the club expected Taumalolo to maintain his status among the game’s elite for a “considerable period of time”.

sport not happening A proposal to make All Black tests and other national sporting events free-to-air is set to fail.

A bill in the name of New Zealand First MP Clayton Mitchell, which was expected to come before Parliament last night, would ensure that any game of “national significance” was freely available to all New Zealanders.

But Mitchell said he had failed to gain enough support to get it over the first hurdle.

Mitchell singled out Labour for not agreeing to back it, saying the party was “forsaking working Kiwis and seniors” who could not afford pay TV. Supporting New Zealand teams and other taxpayer-supported events could involve costs of $1000 a year per household, he said.

Labour’s broadcasting spokeswoman, Clare Curran, said her party was aware of the public’s increasingly dissatisfaction with their access to live sport.

But she said Mitchell’s bill was “unworkable and impractical” because it required too many sporting events to be broadcast for free.

Labour’s priority was improving public broadcasting, she said.

The bill would have covered all international rugby, rugby league, netball, cricket, and football games either played in New Zealand or in a major event such as a world cup, the Summer and Winter Olympics and the Commonwealth Games, and National Rugby League (NRL) grand finals or Super 15 rugby finals featuring a New Zealand team.

Punching above her weight

Hayley Whiting is well and truly punching above her weight.

The 24-year-old former Ashburton College student impressed in her first international weightlifting competition, held in Melbourne last weekend.

Competing in the under-75kg category, Whiting lifted 81kg in the snatch and 93kg in the clean and jerk, for a total of 174kg.

Whiting, who only took up the sport 18 months ago, described competing for New Zealand in the Australian International

Weightlifting Competition as “a big step up” in her career.

“I’ve got a lot to work on but I really enjoyed myself,” she said.

“It was really exciting just being part of the New Zealand team and also to see athletes at the top of their game performing during the competition.”

A natural athlete, Whiting left her mark on a number of sporting codes during her time at Ashburton College, excelling on the track and the court.

“I used to play netball and do athletics but when I went to university I couldn’t really do that

any more, so I picked up Crossfit – and through that I found my interest in weightlifting.”

Whiting studied physiotherapy in Dunedin, graduating in 2014.

She has since worked in Christchurch in a profession she says benefits her weightlifting aspirations.

“I can patch myself back together,” she said. “But weightlifting is not as dangerous as it might appear, there’s a lot of technique involved – if you didn’t have that right it might be risky.

“I think you’d find injury rates in rugby or even netball would

be higher that weighlifting.”

Whiting currently trains at a weightlifting gym in Christchurch under the direction of more experienced lifters, who are also part of the New Zealand team.

From here her focus will be on a competition in the North Island in June, as one in a series in the build-up to Commonwealth Games selection.

“There’s two other females in my weight class who currently rank above me, one who went to the last Commonwealths.

“It will be a lot of hard work, but I may as well give it a shot.”

NZ ‘still in the hunt’

By DaviD Leggat New Zealand’s third-day capitulation against South Africa at the Basin Reserve last weekend was “not a calamity”, according to wicketkeeper BJ Watling.

Starting their second innings 91 runs behind the tourists, and with the pitch in its best batting condition, New Zealand folded for 171, failing miserably to cope with the left arm spin of Keshav Maharaj.

South Africa won the test by eight wickets and need only draw the final match of the New Zealand summer in Hamilton next week to win the series.

New Zealand had won their first four home tests this season, against Pakistan and Bangladesh, and drew creditably with the South Africans in the first test in Dunedin.

But Watling, while acknowledging New Zealand’s performance hadn’t been good enough at the Basin, played down the size of the failure.

“We’ve played some really good test cricket at home this summer.

“We’re won four tests and drawn one.

“It’s not a calamity.

“These things happen,” Watling said yesterday.

“We need to make sure we are fighting in the next test.

“I know the boys are 100 per cent up for it.”

Watling also suggested there is some way for key fast bowler Trent Boult to travel before being confirmed fit for the decider.

Left arm swing man Boult, who has taken 22 wickets in four tests this summer at 22.5 each, suffered an upper leg injury before the second test and there are hopes he will be ready to return at Seddon Park.

“He had a bowl yesterday, the physios are monitoring him over the next few days. ‘’I’m not sure if he’s a hundy (100 percent fit) but it would be great to have him back.

“He’s a world class bowler who’s done a hell of a job for us over the last few years,” Watling added.

He urged his team-mates to be better as a whole unit at Hamilton, than they were in Wellington.

“We’ve got to build partnerships and take these guys (South Africa) deep. ‘’We saw that at Dunedin (in the first test).

“We had them in positions we were pretty happy with.

“That’s what we missed in Wellington and we’re definitely looking to rectify that.”

Savvy Dreams taking it easy A decision has yet to be made as to whether Savvy Dreams will race again this season.

The Group One performer is currently taking it easy in the wake of her third placing in the New Zealand Oaks at Trentham in just her fifth race day appearance.

“We’re very happy with her and she’ll be back at the track next week,” said Guy Lowry, who trains the daughter of Savabeel with Grant Cullen.

While it is a longshot, they have considered a trip to Australia for Savvy Dreams.

“It’s a wild thought, but we may look at Adelaide,” Lowry said.

“There’s the Auraria Stakes, the Australasian Oaks and the SA Oaks.

“She is only a lightly-framed filly and if she shows any signs of tiredness when we get her back next week then she will go out for a good spell.”

Savvy Dreams won on debut

on New Year’s Day before she finished fifth at Trentham and fourth at Hastings.

She then booked her Oaks berth with a runner-up finish behind the subsequent classic winner Bonneval in the Gr.3 Lowland Stakes.

In the meantime, Lowry has tipped Lamborghini in the Bets Travel Waipukurau Cup as the stable’s best chance today.

The Shinko King six-year-old won at Wairoa two starts back before he finished a fair third on his home track at Hastings earlier this month.

“He didn’t back up as well as I had hoped,” Lowry said.

“I expect him to be very competitive this time.”

By contrast, he is not entirely sure what to expect of stablemate and race rival Wait A Sec, who isn’t the easiest horse to follow.

“He’s well enough, but he’s just been disappointing,” Lowry said.

Trainer Chris Waller has changed tack and prefers Saturday week’s feature to his original plan of the $A2m Sydney Cup for the Kiwi-bred son of Shocking. Antonio Giuseppe has finished in the money over 2000 metres at his last two starts, but Waller said the four-year-old was better off over a mile.

La Bella Diosa will be out to resurrect her Sydney campaign on Saturday.

Connections of the leading New Zealand filly were on a high after her debut Australian victory in the Gr.2 Surround Stakes at Randwick a few weeks ago, but they were brought down to earth with a thud by her next performance at Rosehill.

The daughter of So You Think failed to beat a runner home in the Gr.1 Coolmore Classic, after which a scope revealed a small amount of mucus.

She was also suffering from some mild lower airway inflammation.

“They were pretty minor issues to be fair and she’s good now,” said Matt Brown, whose wife and training partner Mandy is in Sydney with their Gr.1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas winner.

Derby in the balance

“I spoke to Mandy yesterday and she was pretty happy,” Brown said.

“The filly was allowed to gallop on the course proper at Randwick, but Mandy couldn’t find a mate for her so she went on her own and she got a bit lost.

“Jason Collett came over to ride her and he was more than happy for us to be pressing forward.”

The expatriate New Zealand jockey will now be reunited with La Bella Diosa in this weekend’s feature having guided her to a superb first-up success in the Surround.

A suspension resulted in Jay Ford gaining the ride in the Coolmore.

Provided La Bella Diosa shows her true form, she will then be heading toward the $A1 million Gr.1 Australian Oaks to be run at Randwick on April 8.

The Vinery Stud Stakes has attracted a top field of 13 threeyear-old fillies to run over 2000m.

Adventador happy Group One-winning sprinter Adventador is enjoying life in retirement.

shburton teenager Kate Lloyd has been called into the Mainland Tactix squad for the start of the ANZ Premiership, New Zealand’s new elite netball league.

The 1.92m defender has been named to cover the absence of injured captain Jess Moulds when the new season gets under way in Hamilton this weekend.

Moulds continues her rehabilitation from a knee injury – having ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament last year while captaining NZA in a practice match against England.

Tactix coach Sue Hawkins said it was an exciting opportunity for Lloyd, 19, who was part of the squad which competed at a pre-season tournament at Otaki last weekend.

Her former Ashburton College coach Angela Mitchell said the experience at Tactix level would be invaluable.

“I always thought her talent was exciting.

“She has great height, an amazing vertical jump and really good timing on people’s shots.

“She was a dangerous defender at secondary school level and this will be a big step up and a really exciting opportunity.”

Mitchell said training pre-season with the squad would ease the transition to game time this weekend.

“She will be thriving and really excited to be part of it.

“She needs to soak up that experience and take every opportunity given to her.”

Mitchell, who is coaching this year’s top school side, said Lloyd’s performance was great for those coming through the grades in Mid Canterbury.

“I think it is really inspirational for our students to see there is a pathway from Ashburton into higher honours.”

Lloyd was part of the Mainland side which competed in the Beko Netball League last season.

She has moved through the Netball Mainland development programmes and is currently studying at Lincoln University.

She was part of the Lincoln University premier club side last season.
