The Ashburton District Council has confirmed that a site in the Ashburton Business Estate could become the base for a new water-bottling plant.

It is in the process of selling 10 hectares of commercial land in the business park to a buyer who has indicated an interest in establishing the plant. It has not confirmed whether the prospective buyer is an overseas interest.

In a statement, the council said that the site under negotiation includes an existing consent for water abstraction

from local aquifers. This consent was granted to the council by Environment Canterbury in September 2011, after it had considered the effects on other water users and the aquifers. Details of the consent are available on the ECan website.

In spite of the deal being an incommittee council item because of “commercial sensitivity”, details of the deal slipped through the council’s security net and were made public last week in a Facebook post.

The issue was discussed at Thursday’s Ashburton Citizens’ Association meet-

ing, with a number of Fairton residents concerned the plant would affect their own wells.

In the statement, the council made it clear that the consent included a recharge consent that would mean more water was returned to the aquifers than was taken out.

Negotiations on the deal are still under way and the sale will be subject to agreement on terms and conditions with confirmation anticipated by June 30.

No details are available on the company negotiating the land deal.

Schools are learning environments so it is just common sense to not have sugary drinks, he said.

Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan said while the college also does not have this policy he thinks that schools will start to reflect a society-wide change in this issue.

There is the argument that it will infringe on the right of the individual to make their own choices, but society, in particular a school, has a responsibility to protect its young people.

It is not fair for something to be made available and then have minors choose whether to have it or not, they cannot always make informed decisions, he said.

“I think that health is going to prevail in the end. I think society will step in and schools will reflect that.”

There has been overwhelming support from Mid Canterbury schools for a ban on sugary drinks at school.

A letter was sent by Ministry of Education head Peter Hughes to schools around the country this week, asking them to consider having a water-only drink policy by the end of the year, due to the health risks of sugary drinks.

A number of schools around Mid Canterbury support this idea and some already have a no sugary drink policy in place, including Hampstead School which has been water-only for 10 years.

Principal Peter Melrose said they made the decision a decade ago after reflecting on the detrimental effect sugary drinks have on teeth and general health.

A 27-year-old man who allegedly took a man hostage at gunpoint and participated in a high-speed police pursuit on Monday night, has been charged.

The man has been charged with two counts of aggravated burglary, two counts of failing to stop, possession of methamphetamine, two counts of threatening to kill or do grievous bodily harm, using a firearm against a law enforcement officer, kidnapping, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and dangerous driving.

He is due to appear North Shore District Court today. The alleged gunman was involved in a highspeed pursuit with police after they attempted to pull him over in a stolen white ute.

Severed fibre cables cause major disruption

Methven was brought to a standstill yesterday as the internet went down for the day after contractors cut through fibre cables.

The town’s BNZ bank closed for the day, but most businesses remained open as their operators struggled on, regardless.

Chorus technicians remained at the scene of the cut cables at 5pm yesterday, working as fast as they could to repair them.

Beaumont said he expected it would be restored last night.

Contractors in Methven not associated with the company had cut through some fibre on the Chorus network.

“On behalf of Chorus, I would like to apologise for any inconvenience this outage has caused consumers,” Mr Beaumont said.

“We obviously don’t like having faults on our network but it is particularly frustrating when a fault happens that is not our fault.”

He understood the contractors were undertaking drilling to install a power duct.

Methven Supervalue owner operator Don McDonald said all communication on pricing and orders was now internet based.

He was hoping the repairs would be made by today when weekly orders needed to be placed.

It would be “massively disruptive” if this did not occur.

“It’s absolutely brought the town to a stop, basically,” Mr

McDonald said.

While many eftpos facilities in town had gone down, at Supervalue it had switched to off-line mode and continued to work.

The BNZ was closed from 11.15am, due to the outage.

Methven i-SITE consultant Liz Cornwall said the business had lost eftpos, as well as all its internet communications, limiting service to customers.

“It’s fairly frustrating, you just start to think ‘I will do that’, and you can’t,” she said.

Sexual assault Police are continuing their investigations into an alleged attempted sexual assault at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds last month. A 16-year-old girl was attacked as she walked through the showgrounds at 9.50pm on February 16. Police said she was dragged to the ground and an offender tried to remove her jersey, but she fought the person off and escaped. Police said the case remained open, but no charges had yet been laid. A man was arrested that night on another matter.

Anorexia linked with genetics

Police are investigating a possible arson link between a torched car, and a nearby house fire, which a sleeping family managed to flee, and another attempted blaze at a house in the same Christchurch suburb on Monday night. A family woke in time to escape the large inferno which engulfed their two-storey house in Parklands at about 2.30am on Tuesday.

The Cottonwood St house was consumed by flames when four fire crews arrived at 2.45am.There were no injuries. Seventeen minutes earlier, 100m around the corner, fire crews were called to extinguish a car on fire in a driveway.

A fear of eating introduced Mid Canterbury resident Tamati Wairepo to the painful world of anorexia nervosa.

His condition was caused by the pain he felt after eating, resulting in the teen avoiding all sorts of foods.

Exercise and a liquid meal supplement saw Tamati eventually begin a journey of recovery.

These days, Tamati is acutely aware of the effect anorexia can have on people and the talk of research into the links between genetics and the disorder has sparked his interest, as another

family member was also diagnosed with anorexia nervosa.

Tamati said he was interested in looking into the international Anorexia Nervosa Genetics Initiative (ANGI) and even participating in the research if he was able.

Visiting researcher Professor Cynthia Bulik is leading the initiative which is calling for 400 Kiwi volunteers who are living with, or who have recovered from anorexia to give blood before July, in order to help the institute further their research.

Professor Bulik said four centres were participating in the experiment – Australia/New Zealand, Sweden, Denmark and the

United States – in the hopes of involving 13,000 people from all over the world.

Other studies had already found anorexia nervosa was 60 per cent heritable and this new research aims to find the exact genes involved, Professor Bulik said.

In New Zealand more than 21,000 people are estimated to have had anorexia nervosa at some point in their lives and already more than 180 have signed up to the study.

A woman was shocked to see sticky tape used to keep an engine panel together on the Air New Zealand plane she was flying in.

Jessica Baker was flying from Nelson to Christchurch with her 11-month-old son, Fairfax reported.

A passenger pointed out the tape on the engine of the plane, which made her feel “quite terrified”. An Air New Zealand spokeswoman said the tape was not ordinary duct tape. Rather, it was specialised aviation speed tape made of aluminium, which is approved by manufacturers and the Civil Aviation Authority.

Fonterra profit must be re-invested

Fonterra is expected to up its 2015 first half-year net profit of $183 million significantly, due to increased margins on added value products due to low milk prices.

Chairman John Wilson has signalled that another modest way of helping farmers through turbulent times would be announced today, with many predicting Fonterra will extend the voluntary loan scheme of $0.50 cents per kilogram for the first seven months of farmers’ milk production to the entire season’s production.

When Dean Watson of Ashburton is not fixing motorbikes, he is riding them.

The 23-year-old motorcycle mechanic is among riders gearing up for The Dubliner Mountain Thunder in Methven this Easter Saturday.

Mr Watson said he got into racing bikes through friends at the age of 18. Today he owns seven of the machines, and generally rides at least one of them, usually his 2014 Yamaha YZF-R15, to work each day at Spring Lynne Motorcycles.

At the Mountain Thunder, he will be racing his 1989 Honda VFR-400 in the pre-1989 Formula 3, where motorcyclists will reach speeds of up to 140 kilometres per hour.

In the Junior Clubman’s event, Mr Watson will be racing his 2011 Kawasaki 250 Ninja, while in the buckets he will be racing his 1988 Honda GL-145.

He had raced his 2015 Yamaha YZF-R3 in the nationals this racing season which was now drawing to a close, and had placed ninth.

“It could’ve been better if I hadn’t crashed out of the first round, but we will never know,” Mr Watson said.

Despite the usual crashes, Mr Watson has never sustained any

major injuries throughout his motorcycle racing career, always coming away with just a few bruises.

And while he considered that motorcycle racing was obviously dangerous, he believed it was no more so than motorcycling generally, or playing rugby.

And what he liked about riding bikes, was the adrenaline rush, and the feeling of freedom which came with it.

Methven’s annual Mountain Thunder street race annually attracts top riders from around New Zealand.

They reach speeds of up to 200 kilometres per hour around a tight track in the town centre.

For the first time side-car riders are on their way from the North Island to put on a demonstration.

“This is a first for Mountain Thunder, so pretty exciting,” event co-ordinator Sue van den Heuvel said.

This year the Dubliner is sponsoring the event, run by the Methven Lions Club since its inception.

The event is run in conjunction with Classic Action Motorcycle Sport (CAMS) from Christchurch and all profits go back into the Methven community.

A major weather system heading across New Zealand in the next few days is set to deliver some useful rain to Mid Canterbury.

A tropical low pressure just to the south of New Caledonia is directing a moist, northerly flow of air into the central Tasman Sea – which is packed with showers and thunderstorms.

The storm was tagged to strengthen last night before sending heavy downpours and gusty winds expected to last through most of tomorrow.

The first effects were forecast to be felt last night with locally heavy, but brief, showers stretching from the Coromandel Peninsula to Northland. A soaking rainfall will push onshore to the western and northern South Island today with rainfalls of between 25 and 75mm for many between the central West Coast and Tasman.

The worst of the storm is tonight in those regions, with an additional 50 to 150mm anticipated, leading to the risk of flooding and slips. Rain will wind down in intensity tomorrow in those regions, but not before more than 250mm has fallen in isolated locales. The rain will also spill over the divide from this evening through to Thursday. Mid Canterbury through to Marlborough forecast to receive between 25 and 75mm.

Helping special needs children

Mount Hutt College is nearly topping the country in its effort to help students with learning difficulties, recent data released by the Dyslexia Foundation has shown.

Last week the Dyslexia Foundation released data from NZQA showing that Mount Hutt College had the second highest percentage of students approved for Special Assessment Conditions (SAC) nationally for 2015.

If approved, Special Assessment Conditions help students with learning difficulties by supplying assistance such as a reader/writer, computer use or extra time in NCEA assessments.

Mount Hutt College had 21.9 per cent of its students approved for SAC last year which was just below King’s College on 23.3 per cent.

Principal John Schreurs said his school has been working hard to support all students with learning difficulties in any way they could.

“Nationally we’re a school that’s doing a lot of work in that area.”

Having extra time in exams or a reader/writer has been shown to make a difference in a student’s

confidence and abilities, he said.

“At the end of the day what we want is students coming out of school so they can better fit into the workplace.”

More than 20 per cent of the school’s students were approved for SAC last year and while he did not have the data on how they did, having special assistance would have helped, Mr Schreurs said.

“We’re doing a lot of work to assist those students.”

The majority of schools in the top 50 for percentage of SAC results were high decile schools because there was often a cost in assessing whether a student was eligible for assistance, he said.

However, NZQA did work with low decile schools to help them apply for funding.

Mount Hutt College recently bought a computer programme which helped do some of the screening for the criteria which has lowered the cost for some families, Mr Schreurs said.

Total SAC applications increased by 27 per cent in 2015, up from 5544 students to 7039 but there were still 23 per cent of schools that did not make any SAC applications.

Key accused of bad timing

NZ First leader Winston Peters has lashed out at yesterday’s announcement, saying it had been made to divert attention from the flag referendum. “The PM has finally absorbed the fact he is going to lose the flag referendum so has used the media to downplay the impending result before he shoots offshore to escape any further embarrassment,” Mr Peters said.

However, Mr Key said the confirmation yesterday that Dame Patsy Reddy would take the role, was done according to standard timelines.

“He probably doesn’t understand the way the timetable works ... the announcement was always going to be around this time. I think if you actually go and trace back to when Sir Jerry was announced, it was almost perfectly to the day that we are doing here.”

Dame Patsy will replace Sir Jerry Mateparae, whose five-year term ends on August 31. She will be the third woman to hold the post.

Car rolls after crash at intersection A vehicle ended up on its side yesterday, after what was the second crash at a suburban Ashburton intersection in the space of a month.

The crash occurred shortly after midday at the intersection

of Wills and Winter streets after the driver of a Honda car failed to give way and collided with the driver of a Mazda which was east bound on Wills Street.

The Mazda was rolled on to its side on impact – as was the car

hit in a similar crash at the same intersection on February 23.

Ashburton Police constable Michael Keen said no injuries were sustained and police were investigating what action to take.

Commemorating Neighbours Day Commemorating Neighbours Day at Ashburton Borough School is St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church ministry assistant Dellwyn Moylan with staff from the school yesterday.

Miss Moylan distributed a multitude of hot cross buns to neighbours of the church, as Easter approaches this coming weekend.

It was an act of kindness made possible after the Presbyterian Church nationally had allocated grants to parishes around the country.

Other parishes which had received the funding would also be distributing hot cross buns to their neighbours.

“It’s about getting out amongst neighbours, supporting them and getting to know who they all

Ashburton Borough staff enjoyed the hot cross buns for their morning tea yesterday.

“I think it’s wonderful, and neighbours are so important,” school secretary Virginia Gould said.

Cycling on for KidsCan A group of Wellington-based cyclists made their way through the district over the weekend, raising money and awareness as they went.

The FFC Racing Team is helping out Kiwi kids living in hardship, determined to raise over $150,000 for the KidsCan Charitable Trust.

KidsCan supports more than 500 low-decile schools all over the country, helping out with raincoats, shoes and basic health products. However, the charity is seeing the need for its support increasing, with around two in five children living in hardship.

Cycling the 700km from Christchurch to Queenstown the team stopped at Mayfield on Saturday for a quick rest.

No Wicked Campers van ban in Ashburton

Ashburton camping grounds are not planning to ban Wicked Campers in the wake of national outrage on the campers’ offensive slogans.

Kaiteriteri Beach Motor Camp has banned the vans from its popular campground.

“Those signs go against the grain of how we see ourselves as a family campground with high standards,” camp office administrator Grada Anderson told media.

Wicked Campers is an Australian-based tourist rental van company, known for its colourful

spray-painted vehicles. Many of the slogans have been criticised as misogynistic, homophobic or racist.

Ashburton Holiday Park manager Carolyn Bartlett said she found the slogans offensive.

However, there were not a lot of the Wicked vans through the grounds and she had never received a complaint from fellow campers about any of them.

“Because we are council owned as well, if we banned anything we would need to run it through them,” Mrs Bartlett said.

Vincie Billante at the Ashburton District Council said the council had no record of the campers be-

ing an issue in Ashburton. At any rate, the park was operated under a contractual arrangement so the camping ground itself was the one to comment on the issue.

Coronation Park manager Jamie Dalzell said he also had no intention of banning Wicked Campers.

They were rarely in the grounds anyway, as most of those renting them were freedom campers.

His camping ground had not received any complaints from fellow campers when they were in the grounds and he said he never took any notice of the slogans on them.

He believed the company

would be enjoying the publicity it was receiving from the banning debate and Kaiteriteri campground had piggy-backed on that publicity.

“You don’t take any notice,” Mr Dalzell said.

Vets use pot to beat PTSD A growing number of states are weighing whether to legalise marijuana to treat post-traumatic stress disorder. But for many veterans, the debate is already over.

They’re increasingly using cannabis even though it remains illegal in most states and is unapproved by the Department of Veterans Affairs because major studies have yet to show it is effective against PTSD. While the research has been contradictory and limited, some former members of the military say pot helps them manage their anxiety, insomnia and nightmares. Prescription drugs such as Klonopin and Zoloft weren’t effective or left them feeling like zombies, some say.

“I went from being an anxious mess to numbing myself with the pills they were giving me,” said Mike Whiter, a 39-yearold former Marine who lives in Philadelphia, where marijuana is illegal. “Cannabis helped me get out of the hole I was in. I started to talk to people and get over my social anxiety.”

Others, though, have seen little benefit from the drug.

And the VA has documented a troubling rise in the number of PTSD-afflicted veterans who have been diagnosed with marijuana dependence, which

The agency later diagnosed him with marijuana dependence as well as depression and bipolar disorder, she said.

Schindel said her son was using marijuana not for recreation but as self-medication, particularly to help him sleep.

He killed himself at age 31 in

2014, writing in his suicide note that “marijuana killed my soul & ruined my brain.”

“He told me he found it much harder to quit than he thought it would be,” Schindel said.

“He’d buy it and smoke it and then flush the rest of it. The next day he bought it again.”

Starting with New Mexico in 2009, 10 states have listed PTSD among the ailments for which medical marijuana can be prescribed, according to the Marijuana Policy Project, which seeks to end criminalisation of the drug. A few more states give doctors broad enough discretion to recommend pot to PTSD sufferers.

Similar measures have been introduced in Georgia, Illinois, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Utah. In November, the US Senate passed an amendment that would allow VA doctors to recommend medical marijuana to vets in states where it’s legal.

The proposal failed to pass the House.

Federal law requires randomised, controlled trials to prove that a drug is effective before VA doctors can recommend it.

FBI might have way to unlock iPhone A much-anticipated court hearing on the federal government’s effort to force Apple Inc. to unlock the iPhone used by one of the shooters in the San Bernardino terror attack was abruptly vacated yesterday after the FBI revealed it may have a way to access data without the company’s help.

Federal prosecutors made the surprising announcement on the eve of a hearing in the US. In court papers they said the FBI has been researching methods to access the data on Syed Ri-

zwan Farook’s encrypted phone since obtaining it on December 3, the day after the attack.

“An outside party” came forward over the weekend and showed the FBI a possible method, the government said in court papers requesting the hearing be postponed. Authorities need time to determine “whether it is a viable method that will not compromise data” on the phone.

If viable, “it should eliminate the need for the assistance from Apple,” according to the filing.

The government did not identify the third party or explain what the proposed method entailed.

Magistrate Judge Sheri Pym granted that request and ordered the government to file a status report by April 5.

Pym also stayed her order compelling Apple to create software that would disable security features on the phone, including one that erases all information if a passcode is incorrectly entered more than 10 times.

The negotiator tells Ms Win “they’re getting looked at but they’re council lights”.

Win pleads again: “Matt, my life is going to be gone in 15 minutes if you don’t have someone else helping us.”

At 2.14am - an hour later the siege ended when police stormed the cafe after a shot was fired inside.

The inquest continues.

New Zealand farmers need to step up their investment on science and innovation to combat the impact of methane and nitrates from agriculture on climate change, Prime Minister John Key said.

Key told the Platinum Primary Producers annual conference in Wellington that the focus would return to climate change as the economy recovers from the global financial crisis and the pressure would come more and more on the agricultural industry, which is responsible for half of New Zealand’s emissions.

Methane gas emissions alone from ruminant livestock such as sheep and cattle account for a third of total emissions and government and industry are already spending around $7 million a year seeking scientific solutions to reduce them.

Director fined $177,000 for death ilton High Court yesterday to four months’ home detention for failing to take practicable steps that its employee Mr Haines was not exposed to the hazard of a trench collapse at work.

Steelcon Construction, which is no longer operating, had earlier pleaded guilty to three breaches of the Health and Safety in Employment Act and was ordered to pay a $97,000 to Haines’ widow Krystle and four children, $14,320 to his parents Kevin and Beatrice and $10,000 to his daughter Heaven who he had from a previous relationship. The company was also

fined $56,000.

At the sentencing, Justice Murray Gilbert said more steps should have been taken to help prevent Mr Haines’ death and told Bishop it was his responsibility to ensure Mr Haines did not enter the site.

He had worked for the company as a labourer for three years prior to his death.

Justice Gilbert said Mr Haines was “much-loved” and acknowledged the on-going suffering his death had caused his wife and his five children which were aged between five months and 16 years when he died.

The director of a Matamata construction company whose worker was buried alive has been ordered to four months’ home detention and his company is to pay $177,320 in fines and reparation.

Universal income universally appealing?

I

n dollar terms the cost would be immense, but in terms of equality Labour could be on to a winner with its idea of a universal income for every adult New Zealander.

At its most basic it would ensure every adult received $200 a week as of right, regardless of individual wealth and willingness to work – or not. It would see a massive restructure of the benefit system, but it would clearly need to have a top-up element for people who were genuinely in need of support and for those beyond working years.

We’re not the first country to have considered this, it’s been trialled with positive results. The rationale behind the proposal is about recognising contributions to society that may not be made through paid work alone.

A universal income would recognise the value that stay-athome mums, people caring for elderly parents or disabled children make. It would recognise those who contribute through creative pursuits or volunteer work that does not necessarily generate an income without any of these people having to justify what they do.

And most of all it would provide a tremendous quality-oflife boost to people whose work generates only a basic income.

It would go a long way towards breaking the cycle of poverty in which many live but cannot escape.

On its own $200 a week is not enough to live on, but if that amount was unaffected by income earned through paid work, it would provide a greater incentive to beneficiaries who claimed working eroded their benefit, to get out there and get a job.

Some will say it is unfair that the universal element means everyone gets paid – high, middle and low income earner alike.

But why not? In the interests of treating every New Zealander as one, it’s fair.

What is patently unfair is the current disincentive to work that comes for honest jobseekers who watch their benefit being eroded by tax when they move into work.

Or for people who want to continue working past 65 whose super becomes change when it’s treated as secondary income.

There’s a long way to go with the idea if it’s to gain any traction, but it’s an idea that needs consideration rather than immediate dismissal.

HE IS RISEN! But because this church is going to celebrate this on Sunday, March 27.

Sadly all the churches that I know of are doing the same.

Inside the leaflet page two it explains where Easter came from, an Anglo-Saxon goddess.

Jesus died and rose again at Passover, which is at the end of April and the churches are going to give this celebration to Easter what Jesus did for mankind at Passover, so very sad.

Water bottling plant Your Saturday, March 19, Guardian makes interesting reading in reporting that the elected councillors’ only employee evaded genuine enquiry as “commercially sensitive” in not explaining a water extraction and bottling plant for Ashburton.

His boss (well back into 2015) announced such a development at a 206 Club gathering of senior citizens and that the project is planned for the new industrial park area.

Given the CEO’s indicator of land purchase for such a project coming behind the mayor’s previous statement, will the mayor now please explain the truths of this venture to our community.

Is the land purchase inclusive of access to a commercially-

developed deep water well and its ECan approvals in the North East Industrial Park (currently owned by ratepayers).

What quantity of daily water extraction is to be taken and what is the consented flow rate?

Will daily extraction/transporting of water containers have a seriously detrimental impact on infrastructure, in a known “red zone” water supply area and on our district’s roading?

Is this scheme being undertaken by a Chinese development and exporting company who will take the water for its own commercial gain?

Finally, has this arrangement been in the making longer than the current term of council and what is the district’s long-term gain in all of this?

With the government’s passing of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, the regulations designed to prevent another Pike River mining incident have had wide-reaching implications for all employers and community agencies, including council.

Although people such as Minister for Workplace Relations Michael Woodhouse or WorkSafe communications manager John Tulloch give assurances that facilities such as community or school swimming pools are not going to be greatly affected, the reality is there will be resourcing implications for us as we navigate our way through the new regulations when they come into effect on April 4.

ming pools. When these pools were built, many by community groups and volunteers, they were placed on the best land available to everyone, usually public reserves or domains.

Council has supported these pools over the years by providing funds to help with ongoing maintenance and to ensure volunteers had adequate water quality monitoring training to keep the pools operational.

Often these and school pools use a key system where families pay a small deposit for a key to the gate that allows unlimited access when they want it.

The pools meet the legislative requirements for fencing, and

safety rules are posted where people can see them, but by and large the pools have operated without active supervision with great success.

In all the years these pools throughout the district have been open, we have not had the misfortune of any people drowning.

This is not to say it can’t happen, but we have been very lucky.

Council now has to look at the best way to comply with the new legislation whilst keeping its support for local communities.

We know how important community swimming pools are in helping to provide a core facility for families in rural areas in the district.

Hence we are not looking at taking any drastic actions such as immediately closing pools like some have thought.

What we need to do is look at ways we can work with the community to find the best solutions on a case-by-case basis.

to make our community swimming pools as safe as we can, so the challenge for us is to define what “reasonably practicable” means as it has yet to be tested.

What I can promise is that council will do the best job it can to work with the communities in Rakaia, Mt Somers, Hinds, Tinwald, Mayfield and Ruapuna on the longterm plans for their pools.

Luckily we have some time up our sleeve before the next swimming season but we need to start planning for that now.

At the moment we are making plans for our annual plan consultation where we come out to the community to hear what you have to say.

I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity and come and see us when we are in your township.

Big thumbs up for Thai cuisine night I’m a big fan of the Hotel Ashburton’s cuisine nights.

Loads of little portions, full of flavour and you certainly don’t leave unsatisfied.

Recently a workmate and I were invited to try the hotel’s Clearwater Restaurant’s Thai Cuisine Night.

I was worried … Thai is probably my favourite cuisine and if it wasn’t done right disppointment would’ve reigned.

It was gorgeous – fragrant, fresh and authentic.

From the kai yad sai poo (omelette Thai-style with crab meat) and tom yam goong gai (hot chicken soup seasoned with lemon and chilli), right to the end with loy keaw (fruit in season with syrup), it delighted the senses.

I was cautious about the aniseed syrup combined with the banana, melon and grapes, but it was actually a refreshing, light dessert to finish the night off.

There were three mains – gaeng keaw wahn moo (green chilli paste pork curry), kao ob saparod (pineapple fried rice) and nuea kam wahn (sliced grilled beef served with chili sauce and fresh broccoli). The latter was my favourite with its flavour hit and tenderness.

The green curry was creamy with just the right amount of bite and if I had any criticism at all, it would be that the rice in the kao ob saparod was overdone, but it was a minor in a night filled with delicious flavours and variety.

Noodle heaven

The Hotel Ashburton’s Clearwater Restaurant is putting on a Night of Noodles! I’m a noodle freak, something to do with the texture.

An all-you-can eat buffet, I heard a sneaky wee rumour that there may be phad thai, some steamed wontons, and ramon noodles.

If you do decide to go, take a picnic blanket because it will be held in the hotel’s gardens if the weather is agreeable. It’s still on if it’s raining, it will just be held inside.

So, to get your noodle juices flowing, Clearwater Restaurant chef Martin Spring has given us a noodle recipe for you to try at home, with ingredients readily available in Ashburton.

■ Season 100g beef sirloin or 100g pork loin with Japanese pepper.

■ Grill meat 90 seconds each side and wrap in foil, refrigerate.

■ After a half an hour cut into thin slices. Do not worry if rare, it will finish cooking in the broth. To give it a smoky flavour you can cook on BBQ. ■ Soften your egg noodles as per instructions on packet, you can use udon or soba noodles if you want.

■ Place noodles in bowl, with thinly sliced meat on top.

■ Pour stock over meat and noodles.

■ Garnish with mung beans and the rest of the spring onions.

■ Optional: Add soft boiled egg, in half ■ Soya sauce and Japanese pepper as additives like salt and pepper.

Merging his passion for art and racing cars

Painting racing cars has represented a merging of two passions for Dennis Brown.

The Methven grandad has painted in oils since the 1960s, and in the 1990s he decided to focus on his fascination with motor racing after years of following the sport and building model cars. His love of painting and his love of cars resulted in a whole new career for him in automotive art.

The 75-year-old retired school teacher said it was the aesthetic quality of the vehicles which drew him in, more so than the concept of racing.

He particularly liked classic vehicles and one of his favourite painting subjects was around the golden years of New Zealand motor racing in the 1960s and 1970s, featuring the top trio of Bruce McLaren, Chris Amon and Denny Hulme.

Mr Brown has received commissions from motoring enthusiasts and has work in private collections and automotive museums throughout New Zealand and overseas.

It is a job which has seen him travel the South Island visiting automotive shows to sell prints of his works and he has come into contact with many interesting cars and their owners.

“I have met fascinating people and their equally fascinating cars,” Mr Brown said.

And some of those cars were worth millions. One which was worth hundreds of thousands, a Lola T70, was being sold by its Dunedin owner who wanted it painted before the car was shipped off overseas.

Mr Brown and wife Fran had to rush to Dunedin to photograph the vehicle and owner, so it could later be painted in all its shining glory.

Skiers revel in perfect water Perfect water conditions created an ideal environment for this year’s Clearwater Aquatic Club annual club championships.

Stand out performer at the event was Marty Green, who took out the Champions of Champions trophy for best all round skier. He also claimed the senior men’s title for slalom and tricks.

Hamish Hunter-Letham came in first in the boys’ under 16 slalom and tricks with Ben Schikker in second. In the girls’ under 16 divisions it was very close between Megan White and Kristy Hunter-Letham who tied for first place in the tricks and slalom.

Penny Coleman claimed the women’s one division title for slalom and tricks with Kellie Forrester in second, while Helen Young won the senior women’s slalom.

Bradley Shearer also had an impressive day taking out first place in the junior boys’ slalom and tricks as did Alia Forrester in the junior girls’ section.

The wakeboarding competition proved very popular with a high number of entries. Kaden Forrester had an outstanding run claiming first in the junior section with Monty Hodge in second and Bradley Shearer third.

Penny Coleman took the senior division with a very high scoring run. Andy Shearer finished second and Hamish Hunter-Letham, third.

In brief Burgess released Sam Burgess has been released from hospital. The South Sydney star Burgess was cleared of a serious neck and spinal damage after being rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital on Sunday during the Rabbitohs’ clash with St George Illawarra at the SCG. No time frame has yet been set for Burgess’ return to the NRL, but he’s not expected to play in the Good Friday clash with Canterbury. The hospital has said dual international Burgess was expected to make a full recovery. He will continue to monitored for any muscle or neurological issues.

Abercrombie off to Turkey Breakers swingman Tom Abercrombie has confirmed he is heading to play for Karsiyaka in the Turkish city of Izmir for the remainder of the Turkish Championship.

Karsiyaka are the defending Champions in the Turkish League and are again contending for a place in the post-season, with Abercrombie being recruited to help that drive to a repeat Championship.

Abercrombie is raring to go after a strong season with the Breakers, including being one of the stand out players in the Grand Final Series defeat to Perth.

“This is an amazing opportunity to once again test myself in one of the best competitions in Europe,” said Abercrombie.

“The last time I was in Izmir was for

the 2010 FIBA World Championships and I have always held great memories of the place. I’m looking forward to joining a team fighting for a great playoff position and looking to defend their championship.

“This was an opportunity too good to turn down and I am excited I will get to continue to play at a very high level and hopefully have a big impact on the team.

Despite some recent events in Turkey I feel confident I am in a good place and have people and resources around me to ensure me and my family are as safe as possible.”

Khawaja continues form Usman Khawaja has all but ended Aaron Finch’s hopes of taking part in the World Twenty20, top-scoring for Australia again.

Khawaja and Finch, the former captain and No.1 batsman on the International Cricket Council’s T20 rankings, were locked in a tight selection struggle in the lead-up to the tournament.

But Khawaja is now the form batsman in Australia’s 15-man squad and has very much nailed down his spot at the top of the order.

Shane Watson is yet to deliver a big score at the event but impressed with the ball in both matches, suggesting Finch will find it hard to break into the XI against Pakistan or India.

Usain Bolt has confirmed the Rio Olympics will be his last.

The 29-year-old Jamaican sprint champion, who has won six gold medals in 100-metre, 200-metre and relays in the past two Olympics, says he doesn’t have the desire to compete at Tokyo in 2020. “It’ll definitely be my last Olympics,” Bolt told German news agency SID. “It’s going to be hard to go four more years for me, to keep the motivation that I want, especially if I accomplish what I want to in Rio.” Bolt also said he aimed to break the 19-second barrier in the 200-metres before his retirement in the next four years, while he plans to claim another treble in Rio. - AAP

Trainer keeping the faith in Selfie Richard Collett is upbeat about Selfie’s future, despite a short-term setback.

The Pukekohe trainer has had his share of frustrations with the multiple stakes placegetter and remains confident the best is yet to come from the three-year-old.

“He’s in the paddock now after he had a chip on his knee removed,” Collett said.

“It was picked up after he ran on Karaka Million night and he was operated on six weeks ago.”

Runner-up in New Zealand’s richest race last season, Selfie has been below par in his two most recent appearances following an unlucky third at Ellerslie behind Sofia Rosa before Christmas.

“He wasn’t himself and was getting on one rein and laying in under pressure so at least we know what was troubling him,” Collett said.

Local fighters win on debut

SBW’s leading ladies Sonny Bill Williams has been keeping in high spirits despite a knee injury ruling him out of of the All Blacks Sevens team who were crowned champions in Vancouver.

Williams, who switched to sevens in the hope of going to the Rio Olympics, should be available for the Hong Kong tournament which starts on April 8. Despite being disappointed about not being able to play in Vancouver, Williams is making the most of his time off by keeping busy with his leading ladies. Sonny Bill’s wife Alana was there to welcome him home and made sure he was still smiling despite not being able to play. He has also been spending time with his nana. `- NZH

Mid Canterbury boxers were in fine form at the South Island Novice Championships at Woolston Boxing Club on Saturday.

Lance Caffell and Coenraad Venter made their ring debuts and both had to step up a weight class.

Caffell fought at middle weight and won one of his two fights while Venter took to the ring in the light heavyweight division and won both of his bouts in convincing fashion.

Mel McGlynn was also in action in the ladies under-64kg division and added another win to her tally.

Australia’s Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne has pleaded ignorance as he faces being stripped of his world heavyweight boxing title because of a positive drug test.

The World Boxing Association (WBA) has notified Browne that his urine sample tested positive to clenbuterol following his upset victory over Uzbekistan’s Ruslan Chagaev in Chechnya earlier this month. Clenbuterol, which boosts the metabolism and burns fat, was used by Tour de France-winning cyclist Alberto Contador in 2010.

Jones stood down Brumbies chief executive Michael Jones has been stood down by the board of the Super Rugby side following a radio interview in which he was critical of the club’s finances. Jones’ standing down followed a surprise visit to Canberra by Australian rugby boss Bill Pulver on Monday, with Brumbies chairman Rob Kennedy informing the CEO of his decision hours later. “It was with great regret that I informed Michael of the board’s decision,” Kennedy said. “However, I believe this decision is in the best long term interest of the Brumbies.”

Logan Smart has returned to where his rugby career began, and will make his first senior Combined Country Competition appearance for Hampstead against Lincoln tomorrow evening.

Hampstead has played a crucial role in Smart’s rugby development and his passion for the game.

The openside flanker first donned the yellow and blue jersey as a 5-year-old, while his father, Michael, played for the Senior B side as a prop.

In 2007, Smart was tea boy during Hampstead’s Watters Cup final loss to Southern, cheering on players that he will now rub shoulders with in the 2016 campaign.

“I’ve always wanted to come back to Hampstead,” he said.

“There’s a few guys playing now that I used to look up to, being able to play beside them and learn from them is great.”

The 22-year-old was unavailable for his side’s abandoned clash against Temuka on Saturday due to an ankle complaint, but did play in the narrow 21-19 pre-season loss to Maheno, and is now counting down the minutes until his first competitive outing.

“My dad lives in Blenheim now, and when we went and played in Maheno he drove all the way down to come and watch me play,” he said.

“It’s my childhood team, so I wanted to come back and I can’t wait to get started.”

Smart, who has played in England for Southend and a number of other local clubs, cited the family feel at Hampstead as what makes the club special.

“It’s a great spirit in the team, we’re all family, they just brought me back in the team like I’d never left,” he said.

“It’s the supporters as well, everyone is always cheering and laughing, it’s just a great atmosphere to play here.”

Parker in talks for richest fight in NZ Joseph Parker’s promoters are negotiating a deal which will see their Kiwi heavyweight’s world title eliminator in Auckland in May set a record as the richest held in New Zealand.

The combined purse alone for Parker’s clash against Francebased Cameroon boxer Carlos Takam will be more than $1 million which will smash the previous record set by the so-called “Fight of the Century” between David Tua and Shane Cameron in 2009 in which both fought for

a guaranteed purse of $500,000 each.

The Herald has seen an email sent by the International Boxing Federation to all promoters affiliated with the New Jerseybased organisation which says both Parker’s promoters Duco Events and Takam’s advisers have reached an agreement for the May 21 fight and that a purse bid – which would have been triggered had the parties been unable to agree terms – has been cancelled.

Duco’s David Higgins said he didn’t want to talk about the IBF email, saying “we’re in a really delicate stage of negotiations for the fight”, but confirmed the bout would be in Auckland and that it would be an expensive one for his organisation.

“There are no contracts signed yet but some terms have been agreed in principle,” he said.

“We do know that the fight here is going to take a bucket-load of money [to put on]. We are going to have

to part with more than $1 million just for the combined purse and that would make it the biggest purse ever for a fight in New Zealand, bigger than the David Tua v Shane Cameron fight in 2009 which was record breaking.”

As Parker, who is based in Las Vegas, has increased his profile significantly in the US and the UK over the past 12 months, his fight against Takam is also likely to be a hit with international viewers.

An Auckland venue for the big fight will likely disappoint Christchurch supporters, but Duco has gone with the biggets market.
