Thieves rip off ratepayers BY SUE NEWMAN

IN TODAY’S GUARDIAN
Thieves smashed their way into an Ashburton District Council storage facility on Wednesday night and made off with about $20,000 worth of goods bought with ratepayers’ money. Among the items taken were three cast-iron and wood picnic table sets and three park benches. The offenders appeared to have arrived at the site with wrecking tools to break into crates and with a trailer to cart the stolen goods away, said coun-
cil open spaces acting manager Rhonda Gallagher. There were two crates of park benches in the yard and while one was smashed and its contents stolen, attempts to break open the second crate appear to have been abandoned, she said. “The picnic table sets were very, very heavy and they’d certainly be difficult to take away.” The tables and benches were stored in an area secured by locks and chains in the cemetery because other council storage facilities were full and the theft
appeared to have been well planned, Gallagher said. “This is ratepayer money that we try to do the best we can with that’s been lost in the theft.” She’s hoping the very distinctive style of the picnic sets and park benches means they will be easily spotted if they’re set up in anyone’s backyard. They are similar in style to park furniture in the Ashburton Domain. Police are investigating the theft and anyone with information on the stolen goods can contact either police or the council.
