A gang-related attack in Mona Square on Saturday led to police arresting nine people in Ashburton yesterday.

‘Savage’ attack: Nine arrests Nine people were arrested in Ashburton yesterday in relation to a gang-related attack which police described as savage and cowardly.

Police said the attack – the third serious disorder incident of its kind in Ashburton in recent months – happened in Mona Square on Saturday, at about 3.30pm, and the victims required medical attention for what were described as moderate injuries.

“They certainly took a beating and were struck about the body and the head with a blunt weapon,” Ashburton police Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said.

Among the weapons used was a wheel

brace. Mr Banfield said had it not been for members of the public intervening in the attack, the outcome could have been fatal.

“They did a good job. They certainly slowed down the frenzied attack, otherwise we could have been looking at a far more serious result,” he said.

The offenders fled the scene on Saturday and police tactical teams from Christchurch – including the armed offenders squad – executed warrants at two Ashburton addresses yesterday morning which resulted in the nine arrests.

Eight of those arrested were to appear in the Christchurch District Court today,

where police would be opposing bail, while the ninth has already been bailed to appear in the Ashburton District Court at a later date.

Mr Banfield said police would not tolerate incidents of serious disorder like Saturday’s and two earlier incidents – one at a park on Davis Crescent in August last year, and the other outside the Ashburton District Court in March, on a day where some of those involved in the earlier incident were appearing.

NZ Blood Service happy with turnout

The NZ Blood Service was able to make a full collection yesterday when 86 people came to the MSA to donate.

Clinical nurse leader Lisa Scott said she was really happy with the turnout.

“We come to Ashburton every month and we always have a full collect, they’re awesome,” she said.

Mrs Scott says NZ Blood needs 3000 donations per week to meet demands and 42,000 patients receive blood product treatments each year.

However, only 4 per cent of the total population donates, which is about 110,000 people.

“It’s not loads when you’ve got a population of four million,” Mrs Scott said.

She encouraged people who are looking to donate to download the new NZ Blood Service Donor App. She said the app is the easiest way to register and it allows people to check their eligibility, when and where they can next donate and look up their do-

nation history.

The app also issues users with an electronic donor card which removes the risk of the card being lost.

Mrs Scott said the Ashburton locals who volunteer to run the refreshment station for the donors are fantastic.

“The group of volunteers are awesome, we couldn’t do it without them,” she said.

The volunteers serve tea, coffee and biscuits to donors while they wait, but recently they have been struggling with numbers.

Lynette Lovett of the Red Cross has been working with NZ Blood for around 10 years and said they desperately needed more volunteers.

She said they used to be organised through the Red Cross but due to people ageing or moving on, numbers have fallen and now multiple groups, including the Lions, work together.

Wandering stock prompts warning

A high number of reports of wandering stock on roads has prompted a warning to Mid Canterbury farmers.

The New Zealand Transport Agency is reminding rural property owners – particularly in South and Mid Canterbury – to ensure their fences are in the best condition to contain their livestock and prevent them from wandering on to the region’s roads

and highways.

According to the NZTA, there has been 56 reports of wandering stock – both sheep and cattle – on state highways around Mid and South Canterbury in the past six months. That’s the highest in Canterbury, although similar to the previous year, NZTA journey manager Lee Wright said.

South Canterbury was the worst, with State Highway 82 between Waimate and Kurow

accounting for 35 of the 56 animals found on highways or roadsides. Of particular concern was the junction of State Highways 1 and 82, south of Makikihi.

“Winter driving conditions add to the difficulty of seeing farm stock with fewer daylight hours and increased chances of fog in the mornings,” Ms Wright said.

“Rural property owners are required to ensure their land is securely fenced to prevent

animals from straying on to the highway.

“The owners of livestock are liable for any damage caused if their stock are wandering and they can be prosecuted if animals cause a crash and negligence is proven.”

Where NZTA contractors have to secure stock, owners can also expect to receive a bill for that work.

Motorists are asked to report any wandering stock by phoning 0800 4 HIGHWAYS.

He said those involved were associated with gangs.

“This is two rival groups and they associate themselves with the wearing of blue, the colour of the Black Power gang, and the wearing of red, the colour of the Mongrel Mob,” Mr Banfield said.

He said every community had gang members or associates living in it, but behaviour like Saturday’s would not be tolerated.

“Police continue to work with all government agencies to make Ashburton a safer community.”

Bobby kill loss leaves workers in limbo

Meat workers have come back swinging at Silver Fern Farms’ decision to process the entire bobby calf kill through its Pareora plant this season, at the expense of hundreds of Fairton employees.

The co-operative announced the decision yesterday afternoon. It will be the second season the kill has gone south.

“The key factor in the decision was that our Pareora team agreed to the later 2pm start time which allows us to process calves the same day they are collected, seven days a week in the peak season,” SFF spokesperson Justin Courtney said.

“Given we reached agreement with Pareora we will not be processing calves at Fairton this season. Fairton will resume processing when the lamb season commences in the region.”

New Zealand Meat Workers Union Canterbury secretary Bill Watt called the decision “somewhat devious”, and one that would result in a delayed start for up to 240 of the 480 union members employed at the plant.

He said the 2pm start was never offered to Fairton workers.

“Fairton and Pareora are in the same collective – Fairton workers would have done the job for the same pay and under the same conditions as Pareora,”

Mr Watt said.

That scenario was put to the vote and agreed upon by the collective.

“In my view the company never had any intention of killing bobby calves at Fairton.”

About two weeks ago the union proposed splitting the bobby calf kill between the two plants in order to keep both number one chains operating from next month. However the company rejected the offer, Mr Watt said.

He called the decision a “cruel hoax on Fairton” and questioned Silver Fern refuting claims it planned to close the Fairton plant, as was recently disclosed in papers attached to the proposed deal to sell a 50 per cent shareholding to Shanghai Maling.

“There’s no doubt there’s over capacity in meatworks, due to the shrinking lamb kill,” Mr Watt said.

Last year the first chain worked 26 weeks, and the second just 14 weeks, Mr Watt said.

This was in contrast to the 42 weeks the number one chain had operated in past years.

Mr Watt said there were many examples of people who are really struggling in the face of reduced hours and called on Silver Fern management to communicate with increased transparency to enable workers to plan their futures.

South Pacific brought to life by artists and their works

The Kermadec region in the South Pacific was brought to life in the Ashburton Art Gallery yesterday.

The Gallery currently has an exhibition Keremadec-Lines of the Ocean on display and yesterday hosted a talk with three of the featured artists .

Bruce Foster, Gregory O’Brien and Elizabeth Thomson shared their experiences and what they encountered on the week-long voyage to Raoul

Island with the Ashburton community.

One of the works by Elizabeth Thomas is made from a “stretchy vinyl” copy of one of her photographs of the Pacific Ocean around Raoul Island and MDF wood crafted into hills and valleys.

“I wanted the work to show the beauty and purity of the sea,” she said.

Gregory O’Brien said he wanted the work to show the experience of the land and said the island became a kind of

motif for the group.

Mr O’Brien also said the creation of the Keremadec Ocean Sanctuary is an extension of the work which has been done to clean up Raoul Island.

“The island is a sanctuary.

Let’s treat the water like we treat the island,” he said.

Also in attendance was the Director of the Pew Charitable Trust Globa; Ocean Legacy, Bronwen Golder.

The exhibition is being supported by the Pew Environment Group.

New property manager for council

The Ashburton District Council’s new property manager Colin Windleborn is trying to adjust to Mid Canterbury’s variable winter weather.

Beanie on, beanie off, it’s still colder than Sydney, where he was a property manager for the Northern Beaches Council. He’s been three weeks in his new role and has already bought a house and is thinking about taking up fishing again.

He is a Chiefs supporter at heart though, with his wife and family in Hamilton.

Mr Windleborn has been able to combine passions for property and business over the years with work for local authorities, including the Waipa District Council where he was a planner and environmental

health officer. He has been running his own businesses and was part of the Health 2000 business group; he also has an MBA from Waikato University.

He said managing property interests for a local authority was a balancing act between council and community expectations. “A prudent investor always looks around for opportunities.”

The Ashburton District Council’s property portfolio is sizeable and includes elderly people’s housing, Glasgow leases, commercial and residential property. Council also manages reserve land for the Crown.

Mr Windleborn said the town seemed vibrant with a number of interesting developments and he hoped to see most of the district Colin Windleborn is getting to know Ashburton in his new eventually. “It is a really nice place, role as property manager for the Ashburton District Couna bit of a hidden jewel.” cil.

ECan to scrutinise water take data Environment Canterbury says it will be taking a hard look at water abstraction data provided this irrigation season.

Most consent-holders will submit their water data for the 2015-16 irrigation season by the end of June and ECan staff will scrutinise it for compliance and take enforcement action against those who continue to flaunt metering regulations and water limits.

There are about 5900 water takes across Canterbury that are required to be measured and reported, and about 1700 in the Ashburton water management zone. In the 2014-15 irrigation season, ECan issued one abatement notice for taking too much water and two in-

fringement notices for the same offence.

Priorities for monitoring consents this season include ensuring all water takes greater than 10 litres per second have meters in accordance with national regulations.

ECan has said non-compliances will be a high priority this season, whether the breaches related to taking water on restriction or over limits or having faulty water meters and not providing data.

A new data management system was in place this season where consent-holders could provide real-time data which allowed for early intervention.

ECan has been under fire this week for failing to take a hard-

er line against water crimes, which have included farmers taking more than their seasonal allocation.

The regional authority has been working with consentholders and irrigators since 2012 to achieve compliance and improve on-farm water efficiency.

“Our experience is that that once consent-holders know what is expected of them, they want to comply and take action.

As a council we are implementing the most comprehensive package of measures in the country to improve water use efficiency and reduce nutrient leaching,” ECan chief executive Bill Bayfield said.

“The aim is to deliver a sig-

nificant improvement in land use management in Canterbury. More than 90 per cent of water takes that require metres in Canterbury are now being measured and reported.

“In May we began a very active programme with consentholders to ensure all comply with the rules. All those who have yet to install meters, around 9 per cent or 500 consent-holders, have been contacted and warned they face enforcement action if they don’t take urgent action.”

The Ashburton water management zone was told earlier this year that Ashburton, along with Hurunui and parts of South Canterbury were problem areas for irrigation non-compliance.

In brief Accident victim dies A man critically injured in a car crash on Seafield Road on June 7 has died as a result of his injuries.

Ashburton police Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said he received word on Monday that the man – the sole occupant of the car which left the road and hit a pole - had unfortunately passed away. The death would be referred to the coroner. The crash – at 10.45pm on the Tuesday night – was blamed on black ice on the road. It was one of a number of crashes put down to the treacherous, icy conditions that night and the following morning.

Skifield closed Mt Hutt has decided to save its snow pack for the weekend and will be closed again today. The skifield has taken a hammering from unseasonably warm weather that has combined with rain to strip the snow-base. It rained on the mountain yesterday and more was due today. Management decided to close today to let the snow pack recover and say the weather looks better for tomorrow and Saturday. Cooler temperatures are forecast next week, with snow possible. Long range more normal winter weather is expected from July 4.

Fairton house fire A member of the public called emergency services on Tuesday night after spotting what they thought was a house fire near Fairton. The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade responded but it turned out to be a controlled burn.

The call-out was at about 7.10pm.

Man escapes unscathed A man was lucky to escape relatively unscathed after his vehicle left the road and rolled near Mayfield yesterday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the scene at about 1.30pm and the man – the sole occupant of the car – was taken to hospital to be checked over. Ashburton police Sergeant Bryan Ennis said the man had turned on to Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road where his car left the road and rolled. Mr Ennis said the road was wet at the time and initial indications were there was no real driver fault.

Ashburton College continues mufti tradition By: eMMa Moody

Ashburton College is keeping up the long held tradition of sponsoring a child with the money they raise from their mufti day.

Yesterday was the school’s second mufti day of the year and most of the gold coin donations will go to the MakeA-Wish Foundation, however $300 will be set aside to sponsor a child through WorldVision.

Head girl Gemma Duncan said it is a tradition for the student executive to do this.

“It’s something that has been happening for a long time and

something we wanted to carry on,” she said.

The college has three mufti days a year and at the start of each school year, the student executive meet to decide which charities they will fundraise for.

This year, the students decided to focus on charities for children, including this terms charity of choice, the Make-AWish Foundation.

Charities will send letters to the executive and there is a decision on which charities they will fundraise for.

However in term one, the executive decided to send the money to Fiji, following Cy-

clone Winston.

This term, Miss Duncan and head boy Kerry Claydon-Wade encouraged teachers to dress up in their house colours for mufti day.

“The teachers wear mufti every day, so we thought this would be a good way to get them involved as well,” Miss Duncan said.

The student executive are also holding a quiz night in term three to raise money, which will go back into the school.

“The quiz night raises funds for the exec to improve something in the school,” Miss Duncan said.

Ashburton StandUP Police arrest man on run for 2 weeks for Moko rally

Ashburton will stand shoulderto-shoulder with the rest of the country on Monday, June 27 to make a stand against child abuse.

The StandUP NZ Ashburton Justice for Moko rally will begin in Baring Square West, opposite the courthouse, at 9am in memory of three-year-old Moko Rangitoheriri and other victims of child abuse.

David William Haerewa, 43, and Tania Shailer, 26 were originally charged with murder of the Taupo boy, but entered the guilty plea to the lesser charge of manslaughter at the High Court at Rotorua last month.

Moko died on August 10 last year after being admitted to Taupo Hospital in a critical condition.

By aNNa leask Police have arrested a man on the run for two weeks after an alleged family violence incident on the North Shore where a woman was seriously assaulted.

Karl Brown allegedly assaulted a woman at an Albany address on June 7.

Brown went on the run and until yesterday afternoon had been actively avoiding arrest, said Detective Inspector Bruce Scott.

Shortly before Brown was located by police, Mr Scott issued a public appeal for information.

“Karl Brown has an extensive history of family violence and we are very concerned for the safety of a woman known to him whilst he remains at large,”

Mr Scott said.

“We believe he has actively been looking for her and police are working with other agencies to keep her safe.”

Brown is currently facing 17 charges including male assaults female, assault with intent to injure, threatening to kill, contravening a protection order, robbery, driving while disqualified and operating a vehicle carelessly.

Mr Scott alleged Brown’s friends had helped him evade police.

“We have received information that he has mates helping him to hide. Let me be clear, if we find evidence that anyone has helped Karl Brown to avoid being arrested, we will look to charge those people.”

Massed choir delights attendees A vibrant blend of young voices welcomed patrons to the opening of the Heartland Bank Primary Schools Music Festival on Tuesday.

Fight Song led by Anna Lischner, packed a punch and readied the audience for the concert ahead.

Rakaia School presented two lively songs and, even though their choir was small, they sang their hearts out on stage.

The next massed choir items, conducted by Anna Walsh, showed a range of vocal techniques including scat. Both I Must Take More Photos and Sing left the audience with powerful messages to think about.

Dorie School choir had marvellous discipline and were tuneful while singing Forever Young and The Cup of Life.

Following Dorie, Hinds School blew the audience away using sock puppets and lights to animate their bracket of songs. Both

of their items featured talented soloists.

Conductor Kerrin Lester chose an interesting variety of songs for the third massed choir item. There were lovely dynamics during Lego House and we had a throwback to the 80s with the song Flashdance.

It was awesome to hear a live band accompanying the Wakanui School choir. Rhythm of Love was performed with passion, while Always Look On The Bright Side of Life showcased the comedic talent of the group.

Ashburton Intermediate School choir 2 performed Skye Boat Song and Africa which featured two mature soloists who both impressively nailed the intonation. The choir sang in tight harmony and performed with conviction. Body percussion in their second song created the sounds of a thunderstorm leaving the audience amazed.

It is always a treat to hear Ashburton College’s Phoenix Rising

choir. Younger students watched in awe as they performed two items which showcased their impressive harmonies and controlled sound.

Representative Choir took to the stage along with two outstanding soloists. All of their items showed a polished and high standard of choral singing.

To finish the night, the students all joined together for the final massed choir items conducted by Anna Lischner. I Wan’na Be Like You was performed by many smiling faces and there was even a visit from two grooving primates!

The final song You Raise Me Up left the audience spellbound by the children’s angelic voices.

It was definitely a good way to conclude a wonderful evening of song.

Look out Mid Canterbury … we have some very talented students making their mark! Well done to everyone involved.

Avalanche claims life of New Zealand mountain guide

Bird survey in its 10th year

A 60-year-old mountain guide described as one of New Zealand’s best, has lost his life in the Swiss alps after he was swept away by an avalanche.

The alpine community is mourning the loss of Russell Braddock, one of the country’s most experienced and well-regarded mountaineers, after he died in an avalanche on Mont Blanc du Tacul on Monday.

Tributes are being posted online in disbelief that the climber had unexpectedly lost his life on the slopes so tragically.

Uilleam Lendrum posted: “Merde! It was smiles all round only a few days ago. Sympathy to family, AC [Adventure Consultants] and his climbing mates. One of NZ’s best. Raise

one for me Paul.”

The New Zealand Alpine Club posted their condolences on their Facebook page.

“Saddest news from Mont Blanc du Tacul today, our thoughts to all affected.”

Details were starting to emerge on how the popular European-based mountaineer was caught in a slab avalanche.

The Chaminox News said the avalanche may have been triggered close to the summit by gendarmes from the Chamonix PGHM performing routine training.

It is believed they were also carried some distance down the north face of the mountain but survived the ordeal.

The newspaper said a rescue

helicopter reached the victim shortly after the avalanche but he could not be resuscitated.

Mr Braddock was described as an experienced mountaineer and a qualified high mountain guide who had lived in Chamonix for many years, working regularly with the Company des Guides.

Wrote Bill King: “A good mate and climbing partner died living the dream.”

“Sad news. He was a top bloke,” wrote Dave Chowdhury.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said consular staff at the New Zealand Embassy in Paris and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were providing advice to the family.

By AngelA Woods Landcare Research is urging members of the public to participate in this year’s New Zealand Garden Bird Survey.

The project is now in its 10th year and participation has doubled since the survey began in 2007.

“I’m hoping the survey will act as an early warning system to alert us if [bird] numbers are declining,” survey founder and organiser Eric Spurr said.

Some 3500 people took part last year and 138,000 birds were counted nationwide, 38,000 more than in 2014.

“I would love for the number [of participants] to be a lot higher this year,” Mr Spurr said.

Last year’s bird count was one of the highest on record, probably because of the harsh winter weather conditions.

Adverse weather forces birds into gardens in search of food, Mr Spurr says. The warm weather this year may also affect bird numbers.

Ecologist Catriona McLeod uses the annual survey in her environmental research.

“Birds not only bring enjoyment to our everyday lives, they also tell us about the health of the environment we live in,” she said.

Ms McLeod sait it was easy to participate. “All you need is an hour, a comfy seat, record what you see and then submit the results online.”

The survey begins on this Saturday, June 25, and runs until Sunday, July 3.

North fires two missiles In a remarkable show of persistence, North Korea yesterday fired two suspected powerful new Musudan midrange ballistic missiles, US and South Korean military officials said, its fifth and sixth such attempts since April.

Five of those launches failed, many exploding in midair or crashing, and the sixth flew only about 400 kilometres, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

It was an improvement but still well short of the missile’s potential 3500-kilometre range and not long enough to be classified as intermediate.

Despite the repeated failures, the North’s determination in testing the Musudan worries Washington and its allies, Tokyo and Seoul, because the missile’s range puts much of Asia and the Pacific, including US military bases there, within reach.

Each new test – apparently linked to a command from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un – also likely provides valuable insights to the North’s scientists and military officials as they push toward their goal of a nuclear and missile programme that can threaten the US mainland.

A statement from South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said a suspected first Musudan launch from the east coast city of Wonsan failed early yesterday.

It didn’t elaborate. But Japan’s Defence Ministry said the missile fragmented and pieces fell into waters off the Korean Peninsula’s east coast.

Later, the JCS said the North fired another suspected Mu-

sudan, which flew about 400 kilometres. Seoul didn’t immediately classify this launch as either a success or failure, but the reported distance is well short of past tests of other midrange missiles.

A US official also said the first launch appeared to be another failure, adding that the U.S. was assessing exactly what had happened.

The US Strategic Command in Hawaii said its systems detected and tracked two sus-

pected North Korean Musudan missiles that fell into the Sea of Japan. It said in a statement that they didn’t pose a threat to North America.

South Korea’s Unification Ministry called the launches a “clear provocation” that violated UN Security Council resolutions banning any ballistic activities by North Korea.

In Tokyo, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was also critical, saying “We find it utterly unforgivable.”

Cameron appeals: ‘Brits don’t quit’ British Prime Minister David Cameron has made a dramatic last-minute appeal to voters to back staying in the European Union two days before a referendum that will shape the future of the West, as polls indicate the outcome is too close to call.

Britons vote on whether to quit the 28-nation bloc amid warnings from world leaders, investors and companies that a decision to leave would diminish the former imperial power’s influence, unleash turmoil on markets and send shock waves around the Western world.

In a rare televised address outside his Downing Street office, Cameron repeated his message that leaving the EU would jeopardise Britain’s economy and its national security, with fewer jobs, fewer allies and higher prices.

“Brits don’t quit,” he said, using the official backdrop to make a direct pitch to older voters considered more eurosceptic and more likely to vote.

“It will just be you in that polling booth. Just you, taking a decision that will affect your future, your children’s future, your grandchildren’s future.”

The Survation poll put the “In” camp just one percentage point ahead of the campaign for a so-called Brexit, well within the margin of error.

Commentators said the hastily arranged appearance suggested Cameron, who promised the referendum in 2013 under pressure from MPs in his Conservative Party, and the “In” campaign were very worried about the outcome.

The EU – already shaken by differences over migration and

the future of the euro zone – would lose its second-largest economy, one of its top two military powers and by far its richest financial centre.

An earlier ORB survey for the Daily Telegraph put support for Remain at 53 per cent, up 5 percentage points on the previous one, with support for Leave on 46 per cent, down three points.

“All the signs of ORB’s latest and final poll point to a referendum that will truly come down to the wire,” said Lynton Crosby, an Australian political strategist who advised the ruling Conservative Party at the last national election in 2015.

Campaigning was suspended for three days after the murder of pro-EU lawmaker Jo Cox, who was shot and stabbed to death in her constituency in northern England last Thursday.

Some Leave campaigners accuse the Remain camp of exploiting her death as part of what they portray as a campaign of scaremongering by the establishment at home and abroad.

Turnout is likely to be key to the result, and the ORB poll found that Remain supporters, who had been regarded as being more apathetic, were increasingly motivated to vote.

GPS device on wrong leg When Dana Hamilton was fatally shot in southeast Washington on May 19, the suspected shooter had what would seem an iron-clad alibi. A tracking bracelet secured to his leg after a previous gun arrest showed him in his apartment, 1.5km away from the crime scene. But District of Columbia police thought Quincy Green had tampered with the GPS device. Instead of cutting off or removing the bracelet, however, which would have alerted authorities, police said Green found another way to dupe the tracker: He took off his leg. Court documents show that the GPS device was attached to the 44-year-old man’s prosthetic limb.

Lawless laments ending The Kiwi star of Xena: Warrior Princess has lamented the show’s controversial ending and says she now tells fans: “Let’s pretend that didn’t happen”. Lucy Lawless played the horse-riding hero of the epic cult fantasy for six seasons between 1995 and 2001 in a role that made her famous, but Xena’s death in the show’s last episode riled fans. Trump train slowing down

onald Trump. Everyone’s got an opinion on him and most probably aren’t that flattering.

The thought that he could one day be the president of the United States of America sends a shiver down your spine and the more time goes on, the more unlikely that prospect seems. Thank goodness.

His poll numbers now seem to be trending well and truly downward and his energetic campaign has hit a few bumps in the road.

But for a while there, Americans seemed to love him, and the question has to be asked – what were they thinking? To many of us, looking in from the outside, it seemed like a no-brainer. Hillary Clinton wins hands down.

But ask an American that question and you’d probably find that many would reply, yeah, Trump’s not great, but he’s a lot better than the out-of-touch alternative in Clinton.

That might be true. Hillary Clinton hasn’t exactly led a normal life.

Her husband once had the job she’s now aiming for, one of the toughest jobs in the world. What does she really know about the everyday struggles and needs of your average American citizen?

But when you think about it, does Trump know any better? His life hasn’t exactly been your average American life either has it?

His campaign at the moment has been described by some as turning into a slow-motion train wreck.

He’s sacked his campaign manager – who he earlier stood by through an assault allegation against a female journalist – and it’s hard to see him making a comeback.

Every time he opens his mouth, it’s news. He comes out with something that makes headlines and, for a large chunk of his campaign, those headlines haven’t been great – well, at least they haven’t in New Zealand.

He may have money and power, but at the end of the day, you can’t buy the White House.

You need a lot more than money and Trump’s kind of power to lead one of the world’s most influential countries, and Trump just doesn’t seem to have what it takes.

YOUR VIEW Free parking The stance of the [Ashburton District] Council in denying free parking to Ashburton motorists defies logic.

This issue continues to cause irritation for many in the community, with overwhelming public support for free parking in the Ashburton CBD being expressed via social media, petition and local comment.

The reduction in the per hour cost of parking, from $1 to 50 cents, misses the point; it is not the cost of the transaction but the inconvenience it entails.

The installed parking machines have been a costly mistake.

Anyone failing to negotiate the nightmare of CBD parking correctly is hammered with a fine.

The current parking situation in Ashburton is a hindrance to the prosperity of the district, at a time when our economy is already under pressure.

Not only locals, but visitors travelling the South Island will have no reason to call here.

I am increasingly concerned at the lack of transparency of the Ashburton District Council.

They appear to have lost sight of an important function of local government stated on their own website, namely to “represent the interests of the district”.

Local retailers have invited all council staff and councillors to discuss CBD parking issues but disappointingly the invitation has not been accepted.

I call on the council to acknowledge the groundswell of opinion against their parking policy and take urgent action.

New Zealand’s booming tourism and migration were extended in May as the economy’s two biggest support planks continued to set annual records.

Annual net migration reached a new record of 68,400 in May, rising from 68,100 in the year through April, and up from 57,800 a year earlier, Statistics New Zealand said. At the same time, overseas short-term visitor arrivals reached 3.29 million in the year ended May 31, up from 3.27 million in the year through April and 11 per cent higher than a year earlier.

A swelling population stoking more activity and record inflows of tourists have helped offset the impact of a rural sector reeling from weak dairy prices.

Yesterday’s data showed the inflow of net migration is slow-

ing with the seasonally adjusted monthly gain at 5500, down from a peak of 6200 in November last year.

Visitors on work visas accounted for the bulk of new arrivals, up 11 per cent for the year ended May 31, while those on student visas were up an annual 8.3 per cent. The number of New Zealand and Australian citizens arriving rose 4.8 per cent for the year.

The Treasury expects annual net migration will peak in June at 70,700, before returning to the long-run average of 12,000 by June 2019.

“We expect annual net migration to fall rapidly over the coming year or two, as foreigners who arrived on temporary work or student visas begin to depart, and as the recovering Australian labour market begins to attract New Zealanders,” Westpac Banking Corp’s New Zealand chief economist

Dominick Stephens said. “However, even if net migration drops away from its peak, it will still be very high by historical standards for some time.”

The figures also showed there were more Chinese holidaymakers in May at 22,200 than the 20,200 Australians who came for a break, just the second time China had trumped New Zealand’s closest neighbour. On an annual basis, Australians made up 534,500 of the 1.68 million holidaymakers, while China was the second biggest pool at 305,400. Business visitors were up 13 per cent in May from a year earlier, and 4.7 per cent on an annual basis.

Indian holidaymakers, a market Tourism New Zealand wants to grow in an effort to bridge the nation’s shoulder season, rose 14 per cent in May and were up 15 per cent for the year.

Spark New Zealand’s mobile revenue will rise at least 7.9 percent in the 2016 financial year, which it says will make it the biggest player in the market.

The Auckland-based company expects revenue from its mobile business will exceed $1.1 billion in the 12 months ending June 30, up from $1.02 billion a year earlier, it said in a statement. The country’s biggest telecommunications group had 2.21 million mobile customers as at December 31, adding 34,000 customers in the final six months of last year. Full details will be released when the country’s biggest telecommunications company reports earnings in August.

Spark claims it has now toppled Vodafone New Zealand as the biggest player in the mobile market by revenue, with merger documents for the proposed tie-up between Vodafone and Sky Network Television showing

Spark’s rival will likely generate $1.07 billion of revenue in the year ending June 30. Both revenue forecasts exclude wholesale customers.

“We’ve rapidly closed the gap to Vodafone in terms of mobile customer numbers over the past few years,” chief executive Simon Moutter said. “Vodafone operates in many countries around the world and we think this is the first time that one of its operating companies has lost its market leadership position to a local competitor.”

Investors are wary that a combined Sky TV/Vodafone entity would provide a formidable rival to Spark with an integrated content/telecommunications provider offering a quad play bundle of fixed-line voice, fixedline broadband, pay-television services, and mobile.

While Sky TV has been grappling with increased competition from over-the-top content providers such as Netflix, Vodafone

Air New Zealand is willing to begin charter flight operations to Port Vila in Vanuatu following temporary repairs to the runway at Bauerfield.

In a statement, it repeated that it would only resume a scheduled service once a permanent solution to issues with the runway was found. In January, Air New Zealand announced its was cancelling flights to Port Vila. Temporary work to restore the runway is only expected to hold for between a year and eighteen months. Air New Zealand added that it was encouraged by the progress being made towards securing a permanent solution.

Don’t cut the training budget The key to New Zealand dairy farmers surviving and even prospering in the milk price downturn is information and the knowledge of how to use that information to make better decisions.

Director of primary sector consultants Scarlatti, Dr Adam Barker, said that farm businesses have to cut costs in a downturn, but it takes training and knowledge to make the right cost-cutting decisions.

“There is a growing body of evidence that the difference between farms that just get by and those that thrive irrespective of conditions comes down to the quality of farm management,” he said.

Studies done in both New Zealand and Australia show that skills make a significant difference to the bottom line.

A study in Tasmania found skill levels explained the difference between the top 10 per cent of dairy farmers (making over 10 per cent return on capital) relative to the average farmer (making a little over 2 per cent return on capital).

Dr Barker said that work done

by Scarlatti demonstrated vocational skill level training for farm staff would return two or three dollars for every dollar invested, while management training yielded between 10 and 20 times that.

“Taking an average-sized farm as an example, profitability can vary by up to $200,000 – and most of that difference is down to the skills of management running that farm.

Dr Mark Paine “It’s not just soil and rainfall, but the people.

“Many factors determine profitability, but training is a very large part of it,” he said.

Dr Barker said that it takes a combination of three things to make a good manager; experience, innate ability and training.

“Anybody can be a better manager with more training. Even for experienced managers that already have lots of skills, the prize is so huge that the returns to training are vast compared to the investment,” Mr Barker said.

DairyNZ strategy and investment leader Dr Mark Paine agreed that reducing the right kinds of costs is important in a downturn.

The strategy and investment leader said that training is critical not only for helping farmers identify what costs to reduce, but also other areas for gain, such as lean management systems, reducing wastage and building effective teams.

“Each one is important to sur-

viving a downturn in good shape,” he said. “But the ability to observe what is happening in the market right now, and to use those observations to anticipate what the impact will be six, nine or 12 months down the track is critical to success – and the ability to do that comes with study and training.”

In short, it is increasingly important that dairy farms in New Zealand recognise the value of people with the skills to plan appropriately for the risk and volatility that the business and industry is confronting.

“A lot of people are good at adopting farm technologies, but it takes skills training to properly utilise those technologies and innovations and ensure they perform to their best for your business.”

“Top performing businesses are regularly setting targets based on factors such as previous years’ performance, and comparing with others in the district and comparing by physical and financial parameters.

“For example, total pasture grown, total pasture utilisation and keeping farm expenses under $3.50 per kilogram of milksolids.”

Mental wellness initia A mental wellness initiative targeting younger members of the farming community has received the tick of approval from New Zealand Young Farmers CEO Terry Copeland.

He said the development of a Government-funded framework to improve mental health and addiction programmes in rural New Zealand, along with the continuation of the emergency response to support rural mental health, was vital – particularly for younger sharemilkers and contract milkers in the face of the dairy downturn.

“We know it’s tough out there at the moment and we know some of our members are suffering significant financial stress,” Mr Copeland said.

“The Government’s Rural Mental Wellness Initiatives is recognition that we need to offer a wide range of support and ensure that all arms of the primary sector are catered for.”

Mr Copeland said while there had been comprehensive support offered to the farming community, it was important to not forget about the younger members of the

Stricter rules for quarantine facilities Stricter new rules for approved quarantine facilities will reduce the chance of unwanted pests or diseases arriving in New Zealand from imported goods, according to the Ministry for Primary Industries.

MPI released new rules earlier this month for New Zealandbased transitional facilities, which are used by importers to hold goods before they are checked for contaminants such as hitchhiking bugs or reptiles.

“The changes will see a major

biosecurity shake-up for these facilities, particularly in the areas of training and auditing requirements,” MPI biosecurity and environment manager Paul Hallett said.

“Such facilities are an important part of New Zealand’s biosecurity system. The changes will give MPI greater assurance that facilities meet the high biosecurity standards we expect of them.

“We have substantially increased the amount and structure of training required by facility

operators and accredited staff – for example, they will now have to undergo retraining every two years. In addition, there is a new requirement for specialist training in checking containers that arrive by air for biosecurity contaminants and pests.

“MPI will also ramp auditing requirements to ensure facilities are running properly, including ensuring that all internal audits are lodged with MPI so we know that they been done.”

The new rules will come into

force in December, leaving noncompliant facilities have six months to get their house in order, after which the new rules will be enforced.

“That could ultimately see the deregistration of some facilities,” Mr Hallett.

There are currently some 5800 transitional facilities operating in New Zealand. They range from large commercial operations near major ports, to small businesses that import one or two containers a year.

All-rounder has it all

L

et’s get straight to the point, Toyota’s new Fortuner is not a look-alike SUV pretender.

For while it has a welcoming and comfortable feel about it, it’s the real thing in the mould of the many 4Runners and Surfs of previous decades that are still doing all sorts of stuff throughout NZ. While they were made to, and still excel in the rough, their on road ride manners, handling, ride and general demeanour are now, oh-so yesterday.

So what exactly does this Fortuner need to come up with?

In a nutshell a contemporary combination of comfort, performance, handling, touring capability, practicality and true off-road ability.

While it is closely related to the Hilux, and inherits its full frame chassis it benefits from a decidedly more supple multi-link rear suspension set-up with coil springs and anti-roll bars instead of leaf springs.

Looks wise, from the front there’s also a definite Hilux connection, although it only shares the front doors and bonnet.

The stylistically interesting uplift, from the rear doors curtails the infantry’s view out from the third row.

There’s GX, GXL and Limiteds, all with the same 2.8-litre turbodiesel as used in the Prado and Hilux.

The GX has manual air-con, roof rails, rear privacy glass and 17” alloys while the GXL gets auto air-con, a 220V power point, great LED headlights and daytime running lights.

The Limited adds leather furnishings, 18” alloys, and more.

Comfort-wise, there’s seats for seven in the well laid out, nicely finished cabin.

The excellent, well-shaped and placed front seats (although you do climb quite high to get in) certainly proved themselves during three-hour plus, non-stop drives.

Zero to 100km/h happens in less than 13 seconds, while at open road cruise, the claimed overall fuel consumption of 8.6L/100kms is well within reason.

For its size the 11.6 metre turning circle is rather good.

This, together with the nice consistent weight and directness of the steering and the way the suspension is set-up, gives the Fortuner a pleasantly agile feel.

It turns in nicely, with expected and predictable under-steer and has a great sure-footed feel about it, both its road-holding and handling, when pressing on through quicker, challenging bends.

While the on-road ride is on the firmer side, it is both settled and touring comfortable, with only the worst corrugations being noticed.

That is also pretty much the case off-road, where selecting 4WD for a constant 50/50 drive split is easily done.

Then, with the combination of very good approach/departure angles, selectable low range, the rear diff-lock, hill-start-descent controls means it apparently comes pretty close (for those more courageous than yours truly) to matching the Hilux’s very creditable off-road abilities.

Ashburton Bridge Club On Sunday members of the Ashburton Bridge Club participated in the Annual Conlands Trophy, always a most enjoyable day.

The heart Q in the South hand gives the pitch of the losing 3rd diamond from declarer’s hand. All in all, a very pleasing result.

Allenton Outdoor Bowling Club: Last Thursday the club held a very successful Mid-Winter Ladies Triples Tournament with a full green of 16 teams which included entries from Lincoln, Temuka and local clubs. Ashburton Golf Club Semi final time for the Presidents Trophy and Plate, and 4 great games look in store. Lefty May takes on Noel Sutton, now I have backed against Sooty in both games so far therefore he is begging me to do it again. He will get a bucket load of shots off Paul so it will be a tight game, but go on then Lefty to win on the last. Don Houghton will fight out with Tufuga Sa, now both these boys are playing well, it should be a wonderful match, I reckon Don will sneak a tight one. In the plate Brendy Davidson will have to give George Brown a lot of shots, this will be the tie of the day, a certainty for extra holes and I reckon the shots will eventually be too much for Brendy and George will go through.

Final game is a one sided affair Paul Greer will be too big and too strong for a poor frail pomme, I can’t seeing the game pass 14 holes, all Paddy can bring to the game is stunning good looks and a wicked sense of humour.

Ashburton Writers’ Group President Julie presided over the June meeting of the Ashburton Writers’ Group held recently. Gordon read a quotation – “The candle that burns very bright burns twice as fast and you have burnt very brightly.”

Rae gave a report on the Short Story and Poetry Competition. The cheque from Creative Communities had been received, Julie, Rae and John had attended the presentation. Advertisements had been placed in local newspapers and posters around town, also entry forms sent to schools. The book voucher prizes were confirmed, and the Mayor will be attending the prize giving on July 20. The judging of the stories is to be on July 12.

The assignment for the meeting was the first two pages of a historical novel. Members wrote of grim grey gown, dreary autumn day, Russian Imperial Court, emotional farewell, salt spray and long ago voyage.

The instant exercise was to start with the words “And the leaves fell, the trees were bare” Members wrote of spreading lawn seed, snow covered earth, wishing, struggling lives, expanding family, a steep bank, painting from times past and howling nor-wester.

The meeting concluded at 2.50pm with the serving of afternoon tea.

Ashburton Photographic Society Our attendance at Meetings through May remained very good and we started the month with a visit from Hazel and Lauren from The Photo Shop. Giving us details of all the wonderful products and services they offer. Our fieldtrip for May was off to Peel Forest where ten members visited the Church and then off to the Big Tree Walk. Although I have to say it took us a lot longer than the 15 minutes on the sign to walk to the tree!

We had fauna and fungi to photograph Our Set Subject for this year was Triangles and this was judged by Shirin Khosraviani, the Curator at the Ashburton Art Gallery.

Grey Power Ashburton Inc. On Monday June 20 Vice President Colin Cameron welcomed 60 plus members to the Monthly General Meeting at the Seniors Centre. Apologies were accepted from Elizabeth Davies, Apologies were received from; Mary & Ken Smith; Shirley & Blair Stringer; Peter Thomas; and Joy Jaine. Betty King moved that they be accepted, carried.

Colin advised members that information leaflets were available regarding the rates rebate and rates postponement schemes were available, also that there was going to be a Senior Chef cooking class to be held in Ashburton in August.

A petition regarding free transport for Goldcard members was available to sign.

Colin then introduced the speaker for the afternoon, Ken Stevens from MSD. Ken originally from Southland has been with the MSD for 25 years and is an adviser on superannuation and does many presentations to different groups. Ken advised of the various entitlements that are available to those on superannuation, such as accommodation supplements; hardship grants; residential care subsidy and funeral grants. Many of those present were not aware of these additional benefits that are available. Questions asked were about 0800 number waiting time; leaving the country while on super; and a local problem with access to advisers. Trevor Gamblin passed a vote of thanks and presented Ken with a fruit tray.

The raffle was drawn and prizes distributed.

Rose and Bernard entertained while afternoon tea was served.

Next meeting July 18 where the speaker will be Helen Wilson from BUPA Care services.

In it he confirmed the club had enjoyed a worthwhile year having given $42,000 in grants and donations to 46 local individuals, schools, clubs, groups and organisations.

Croatia ends Spain’s 12-year run Spain’s 12-year unbeaten run at the European Championship ended when Croatia rallied for a stunning 2-1 win yesterday, sending the two-time champions into an intense, high-profile knockout match against Italy in the round of 16.

Ivan Perisic’s 87th-minute winner for Croatia not only ended Spain’s unbeaten run at the tournament that stretched back to 2004, it also relegated the defending champions into second place in Group D. A draw would have been enough for Spain to secure first place in the group and a potentially easier second-round game.

Spain will face the Italians at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis on Monday – a repeat of the 2012 final that Spain won 4-0. Croatia will play one of the third-place teams in the northern French city of Lens on Saturday.

“It’s not the best path for us, but you never know where the danger will be,” Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque said. “We wanted to advance in first place but we are prepared to overcome this.”

It had all started so well for Spain, when striker Alvaro Morata put his side ahead in the seventh minute, redirecting the ball into the net after a shot by midfielder Cesc Fabregas.

“It’s better to lose now than on Monday (against Italy),” Spain striker Manuel “Nolito” Agudo said. “It will be harder now, but you have to beat everybody to be the champion.

“We still depend on ourselves.

We will be ready to play Italy.”

Italy has been somewhat of a surprise package at Euro 2016.

The team arrived in France with few predicting it would go far but it qualified top of its group with a game to spare, after winning both of its matches without conceding a goal.

“Italy is playing well of late,” Spain midfielder Andres Iniesta said. “They also like to keep the ball as part of their defensive tactics.”

Croatia’s surprise victory came despite playing without star midfielder Luka Modric and forward Mario Mandzukic, both out with muscle injuries.

“The team spirit helped us and we were fighting until the last minute,” Perisic said through a translator. “I think we can go far now. If we play like this we can go to the very end.”

Croatia hadn’t beaten Spain since a 2-0 result in friendly in Valencia in 1994. The teams had also met in the final group game at Euro 2012, when Spain won 1-0.

Teams set for trophy round

The business end of the premier grade netball season is upon us with the trophy round beginning this evening at the EA Networks Centre Stadium.

United managed to retain their premier grade status following a win over Hampstead under-18 in a promotion/relegation play-off clash on Tuesday evening.

Anne Gilbert’s ladies led throughout, but a sterling third quarter – in which they outscored Hampstead under-18

14-1 – saw United through to a 35-16 victory. United will now turn their attention to Ashburton College this evening and will be determined to put a disappointing second round behind them.

Meanwhile, College will be out to continue the fine form they displayed in their convincing 41-21 victory over Burnside during Tuesday’s sports exchange, but three games in as many days may cause fatigue following last night’s SuperNet match against St Andrew’s.

In the opposite 6.30pm fixture

on the ACL Court, Hampstead will lock horns with Southern.

Southern, who had just been promoted to the premier grade, downed Hampstead 29-23 when the sides last met on the opening night of round two.

But Hampstead have shown plenty of grit in recent weeks to see off United in convincing fashion a fortnight ago and offered a stern challenge to Methven last week.

The evening’s late fixture will garner plenty of attention as this season’s two best teams, Celtic and Methven, face-off in what

Locke shifts to rugby Rugby league star Kevin Locke is making the switch to rugby union.

The former Warrior and Kiwis player has signed to play for the Greater Sydney Rams in Australia’s National Rugby Championship (NRC), which is the Australian equivalent of New Zealand’s NPC. In the build-up to his debut with the Rams, Locke will play the remainder of New South Wales’ premier grade rugby union competition, the Shute Shield with Southern Districts.

Locke is currently recovering from a shoulder reconstruction,

and Southern Districts coach Matt Barr told Rugby News he was “hopeful” Locke would be fully fit for the Shute Shield finals next month, before making his NRC debut for the Rams in late August.

Former Crusaders coach Daryl Gibson is currently coaching the New South Wales Waratahs, and there’s speculation that Locke could join his team in the future.

Locke played 88 games for the Warriors up until 2014, scoring 26 tries.

He represented New Zealand eight times, before spending two seasons in the UK Super League.

Rugby league star Kevin Locke is switching to rugby union.

A free-wheeling Glenn Maxwell left Mitch Marsh in awe as the pair pushed Australia into the ODI triseries final with a tense win over West Indies. Steve Smith’s side needed a victory in Barbados to advance to the series decider, also at Kensington Oval on Monday.

Marsh produced a mature international knock, top-scoring with 79 not out as Australia hauled in their target of 283 with eight balls remaining and six wickets in hand. The 24-year-old noted it was “right up there” among his best digs.

Her captain, Kayla Whitelock, has been around a long time but reckoned this was the best goal she’d seen Michelsen score.

“Rose [Keddell] and I looked at each other and couldn’t believe it,” Whitelock said yesterday. “It was an awesome goal. She’s a very skilful player and it got us on a roll.”

“Pace is what our game is based on, having speed through the midfield and attackers and whenever possible once we win the ball we want to counter-attack with speed,” assistant coach Sean

Dancer said. “We’re an attackingstyle team, so when we get the ball we want to go, go, go.”

Whitelock got through her first game back from a quad strain, suffered in a warm-up game against Belgium a week ago, in good shape. Her influence on the team is significant.

“We had a scan and there wasn’t too much damage but we wanted to make sure it was 100 per cent,” she said.

The Dutch are clear of the field on nine points, but a win over Argentina, who are second on seven, would have New Zealand well-positioned to challenge for the gold on the final day of the tournament early on Monday.

Injury has forced the early departure of three members of the Wales rugby squad. Veteran prop Gethin Jenkins, who’s started both tests, picked up a calf injury in Wellington, while second forward Bradley Davies injured his knee in the same game.

Loose forward Josh Turnbull suffered a shoulder injury in his only game on tour against the Chiefs last week in Hamilton and had also headed home. Forwards coach Robin McBryde insists the trio’s absence won’t make this weekend’s third and final test against the All Blacks tougher. He says the remainder of the squad is fit and well and the departures won’t affect them too much.

Fastest pit stop Pit stops are often nothing but a frenzy of to the naked eye, a couple of seconds and the vehicle is off again. In what is one of the greatest pieces of choreography in sport, Williams took things to another level at the weekend changing four tyres in under two seconds. The pit stop at the Grand Prix of Europe in Azerbaijan clocked in at just 1.92 seconds from start to finish, tying their own previously set record mark.

The top time was previously a stop by Red Bull driver Mark Webber in the 2013 United States Grand Prix, also in the record time of 1.92 seconds. Williams has produced the fastest pit stop time at all eight Grand Prix events so far in 2016.

Sport Messi sets goal record Argentina striker Lionel Messi became his country’s all-time top goalscorer yesterday when he scored in the Copa America semi-final against the United States to take his international tally to 55 goals. The five-time world player of the year scored in the 32nd minute of the match in Houston to give Argentina a 2-0 lead. Maumalo staying The Warriors have fended off approaches from rival clubs and are set to announce the re-signing of rookie wing Ken Maumalo through until the end of 2018. The club has taken up an option on the 21-year-old for next season and will keep him for a further year after he turned down an offer to join St George Illawarra mid-season. It was a medal laden day for Isla Russell at the recent Canterbury Westland Karate Championships in Christchurch.

The 11-year-old karate starlet, who will compete at the NZ National Championships in Wellington next month, was in

superb form and managed to take out her age-group division with two gold medals in Kumite events and a bronze medal in Kata.

The hat-trick of medals were a just reward for Russell’s dedication to her craft – traveling to Christchurch up to three times each week to train.

The Ashburton Borough student’s recent success backed up her gold and bronze medal wins at the New Zealand Karate Open in April.

Russell will now turn her attention to the Oceania Karate Championships, where she will represent New Zealand in New Caledonia in September.

Goromaru at Toulon Japan World Cup star Ayumu Goromaru began training for the first time with his new French club Toulon.

Toulon, France’s wealthiest club, have signed Goromaru on a one-year deal with a one-year extension on option.

“There was no reason to refuse an offer to play here,” the 30-year-old fullback said as he was officially presented to the press. “There isn’t a club like Toulon anywhere else in the world. It’s a big challenge but one which will be worth it.” Toulon president Mourad Boudjellal said the decision to sign Goromaru was purely sporting and not a bid to break into the Japanese and Asian market.
